RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of personalized music therapy in combination with medication as a treatment for tinnitus. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a total of 200 patients who were admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology in our hospital from June 2018 to June 2019, with tinnitus as their primary complaint. Patients were divided into four groups based on their individual treatment methods: medication group (patients received medication only, n=40), tinnitus masking (TM) group (patients received medication plus TM, n=38), tinnitus re-training (TRT) group (patients received medication plus TRT, n=35), and personalized group (patients received medication plus personalized music therapy, n=30). The pure-tone audiometry (PTA), loudness visual analogue scale (VAS), and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) for each patient were analyzed. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in the THI and VAS scores of all groups before and after treatment (p<0.05). Following nine and twelve months of treatment, the THI and VAS scores of the TRT group and the personalized group were significantly lower than those of the other two groups (p<0.05). The THI and VAS scores of the personalized group were significantly lower than those of the TRT group (p<0.05). Additionally, THI and VAS scores were statistically different at various measurement time points in each group (p<0.05). The clinical effective rate (85.37%) of the personalized group was higher than that of the other three groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TM, TRT, or personalized music therapy, when combined with medication, are effective in treating patients with tinnitus. Among these methods, personalized music therapy may be the superior treatment after nine months of treatment.

Objective: To investigate the association of blood lead and blood selenium with serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) among Chinese adults aged 19 to 79 years. Methods: The participants were enrolled from the first wave of China National Human Biomonitoring (CNHBM) conducted from 2017 to 2018. 10 153 participants aged 19 to 79 years were included in this study. Fasting blood samples were obtained from participants. Lead and selenium in whole blood and hs-CRP in serum were measured. Individuals with hs-CRP levels above 3.0 mg/L were defined as elevated hs-CRP. Generalized linear mixed models and restricted cubic spline models were used to analyze the association of blood lead and blood selenium with elevated hs-CRP. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the multiplicative scale and additive scale interaction between blood lead and blood selenium on elevated hs-CRP. Results: The age of participants was (48.91±15.38) years, of which 5 054 (61.47%) were male. 1 181 (11.29%) participants were defined as elevated hs-CRP. After multivariable adjustment, results from generalized linear models showed that compared with participants with the lowest quartile of blood lead, the OR (95%CI) of elevated hs-CRP for participants with the second, third, and highest quartiles were 1.14 (0.94-1.37), 1.25 (1.04-1.52) and 1.38 (1.13-1.68), respectively. When compared with participants with the lowest quartile of blood selenium, the OR (95%CI) of elevated hs-CRP for participants with the second, third and highest quartiles were 0.86 (0.72-1.04), 0.91 (0.76-1.11), and 0.75 (0.61-0.92), respectively. Results from the interaction analysis showed no significant interaction between lead and selenium on elevated hs-CRP. Conclusion: Blood concentration of lead was positively associated with elevated serum hs-CRP, and blood concentration of selenium was inversely related to elevated hs-CRP, while blood lead and selenium did not present interaction on elevated hs-CRP.

RESUMEN

1. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of resveratrol on laying performance, egg quality, egg yolk cholesterol and antioxidant enzyme activities of laying hens. 2. A total of 360 Beijing PINK-1 laying hens (60 weeks old) were randomly distributed among five dietary treatments, each of which included 6 replicates of 12 hens. Dietary treatments were basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg diet resveratrol. The study lasted for 9 weeks including 1 week of adaptation and 8 weeks of the main experimental period. 3. The results indicated that dietary resveratrol significantly improved feed conversion ratios during 5-8 weeks and 1-8 weeks of the trial. Increasing dietary concentrations of the resveratrol linearly improved Haugh unit and albumen height of eggs. 4. The content of total cholesterol (TC), total triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) in serum and cholesterol in yolk was significantly decreased by dietary resveratrol, and there were significant linear correlations between these indexes and resveratrol supplemental levels. 5. Dietary resveratrol supplementation significantly improved serum Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) enzyme activity and decreased serum malondialdehyde (MDA) content in groups with 2.0 and 4.0 g/kg resveratrol as compared to the control, respectively. However, supplementation of resveratrol did not affect the activity of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD). 6. It is concluded that resveratrol supplementation has a positive effect on performance, lipid-related traits and antioxidant activity of laying hens.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to optimize ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from Phyllanthus emblica. METHODS: Extracts obtained by UAE were evaluated for their antioxidant activities. Extraction experiments were carried out with three factors and three levels namely extraction time (varying from 15 to 60 min), ethanol concentration (varying from 50 to 90%) and frequency (varying from 28 to 56 kHz). RESULTS: The results showed that the UAE optimal conditions of extracting total phenol components were as follows: 15 min of extraction time, 60°C of extraction temperature, 70% of ethanol concentration, 56 kHz of ultrasonic frequency and a 1: 50 solid to solvent ratio. Under optimal conditions, the leaching-out rate of phenolic compounds was up to 55.34 mg g(-1) , and the yield of crude extract of P. emblica was up to 56.82%. The results reveal that the yield of phenolic compounds of UAE (56.82%) is higher than that of conventional solvent extraction (16.78%). Furthermore, the antioxidant activities of ethanol extracts obtained by UAE were evaluated in terms of activities of DPPH (1,1'-diphenyl-2-2'-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity, metal chelating activity, and reducing power. P. emblica extracts obtained by UAE showed high antioxidant activity (26.00, 50.11 and 115.91 µg mL(-1) of IC50 values for DPPH radicals, total antioxidant ability and chelating ability of ferrous ion). CONCLUSION: The result of this study showed that UAE was a suitable method for the extraction of total phenolic compounds. Moreover, the author's main finding in this work is the fact that phenolic compounds from P. emblica show excellent antioxidant activity in multi-test systems.

Silymarin, a standardized extract of the milk thistle (Silybum marianum), has a long tradition as a herbal remedy, and was introduced as a hepatoprotective agent a few years ago. However, the therapeutic effects of silymarin remain undefined. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a xenobiotic used extensively to induce oxidative stress and is one of the most widely used hepatic toxins for experimental induction of liver fibrosis in the laboratory. In this study, we investigated the restoration of the CCl4-induced hepatic fibrosis by high dose of silymarin in rats. After treatment with oil (as normal group; n = 6) or CCl4 [as model (n = 7) and therapeutic (n = 7) groups] by intragastric delivery for 8 weeks for the induction of liver fibrosis, the rats in the normal and model group were administered orally normal saline four times a week for 3 weeks whilst the therapeutic group received silymarin (200 mg/kg). The histopathological changes were observed with Masson staining. The results showed that the restoration of the CCl4-induced damage of liver fibrosis in the therapeutic group was significantly increased as compared to that in the model group. Moreover, silymarin significantly decreased the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in serum, and also reversed the altered expressions of alpha-smooth muscle actin in liver tissue. Therefore, these findings indicated that silymarin may have the potential to increase the resolution of the CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in rats.

The goal of these studies was to assess the regulatory roles of the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) in sexual arousal, inferred from noncontact erection (NCE) evoked in male rats by remote cues from estrous females. NCE and copulatory behavior were recorded before and after quinolinic acid or radiofrequency (RF) lesions were made in the MPOA (Experiments 1-3) or RF lesions were made in the BST (Experiment 4). All males with MPOA lesions, particularly in the rostral region, displayed severe deficits in copulation but little or no decrement in NCE. In contrast, BST lesions caused relatively moderate deficits in copulation, but they severely impaired NCE. Animals with larger BST lesions, including rostral and caudal medial regions, had more deficits in both copulatory behavior and NCE than did males with smaller lesions confined to the rostral medial BST. These results suggest that (1) the MPOA is critical for copulatory behavior but not for NCE, (2) males that stop copulating after MPOA lesions are still sexually aroused by estrous females, and (3) the BST plays an important role in mediating NCE.

In order to prevent the ototoxicity of kanamycin (KM), the effects of Poria Cocos (PC) on the ototoxicity induced by KM in guinea-pigs was observed by infusing the PC decoction into the guinea-pigs with comparing the difference in the general intoxicating symptom, prayer's reflex (PR) threshold, brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the absence rate of outer hair cells in the first turn of cochlea. The results suggested that the ototoxicity of KM was retarded by giving the PC decoction. On 7th day after given KM, PR threshold of 4,6,8 kHz in the medicated group and control group were 4.7 +/- 1.5 dB, 5.7 +/- 2.4 dB, 2.7 +/- 1.2 dB and 10.5 +/- 3.2 dB, 12.1 +/- 3.7 dB, 8.5 +/- 2.7 dB respectively. BAEPs threshold on 13th day given KM raised 22.7 +/- 9.7 dB in the medicated group and 51.3 +/- 14.4 dB in control group. The absence rate of outer hair cells in first turn of cochlea were 39.4% and 67.4% respectively. The results suggested that PC might be antagonistic to the ototoxicity of KM in guinea-pigs.

Many mammalian transcription factors, including human and mouse serum response factors (SRFs), are post-translationally modified with O-linked N-acetylglucosamine monosaccharides on multiple serine and/or threonine residues. Nuclear extracts were prepared from 9.5 to 19 days postcoitum mouse embryos and subsequently were fractionated by wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-agarose affinity chromatography. SRF binds WGA-agarose and apparently is O-glycosylated. On the other hand, the low molecular weight serum response element (SRE)-binding proteins, including the previously named band I and band II factors, did not bind WGA-agarose. Furthermore, we showed that the fastest migrating complex contains the Yin-Yang 1 (YY1) factor. YY1 binds to the c-fos SRE and skeletal alpha-actin muscle regulatory element (MRE), but not the cardiac alpha-actin MRE. Nuclear extracts from NIH/3T3 fibroblasts contain similar, if not identical, SRE-binding complexes. Besides these SRE-binding factors, mouse PEA3-binding factor, presumably an ETS domain-containing protein, was found to bind SRF protein. This physical interaction, between SRF and ETS domain proteins, was shown to involve the DNA-binding domain-containing region of SRF and not the carboxyl-terminal transactivation domain.

Coagulation change was studied in 16 adult female patients undergoing radical hysterectomy with BPLND surgery. None had preoperative alterations in coagulation or liver function and was receiving anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. Sixteen ASA class I-II were divided into 2 groups randomly with eight patients in each group. One group accepted autologous plasma transfusion near the end of surgery, the other group did not. Autologous plasma was retrieved by plasma saver post induction of anesthesia. Every patient received induced hypotensive anesthesia during the operation. Whole blood coagulation status was quantitated by using thromboelastography (TEG). Blood samples for TEG were obtained before induction of anesthesia, after closure of peritoneum, and 2 hours post autologous plasma transfusion or 2 hours post peritoneum closure. Most parameters measured by TEG showed improved coagulation status in autologous plasma transfusion group. We concluded that coagulation change was minimal during induced hypotension, and improved coagulation was obtained 2 hours post autologous plasma transfusion during radical hysterectomy with BPLND surgery.

The stem cell factor is a glycoprotein hormone which regulates the proliferation and differentiation of primitive hematopoietic cells through its interaction with a tyrosine kinase transmembrane receptor which is encoded by the c-kit proto-oncogene. To examine whether a murine c-kit receptor can be functional in murine interleukin-3 (mIL-3)-dependent hematopoietic cell line, we introduced the murine c-kit cDNA into mIL-3-dependent pro-B cell line Ba/F3. One of the resulting clones, Ba/F3 clone BF-K96, expressed the 140 kDa protein recognized by anti-c-kit monoclonal antibody and the expressed c-kit receptor protein on the cell surface bound to a radiolabeled soluble form of murine stem cell factor (mSCF) with high affinity. BF-K96 clone expressing the c-kit receptor could proliferate in response to mSCF in the absence of mIL-3. The cell clone could also grow in co-culture with mouse 3T3 cells which are endogeneously expressing a membrane-associated type of mSCF on their cell surfaces. These findings demonstrate that the c-kit receptor expressed on mIL-3-dependent hematopoietic cell line Ba/F3 transduce the mSCF-dependent growth signal, indicating that established cell clone will provide a unique cellular system for the study of SCF/c-kit signal transduction mechanism.
