RESUMEN

A dose titration and reduced duration medication study were performed to evaluate the current enrofloxacin treatment schedule in growing turkeys experimentally infected with avian metapneumovirus and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. Experimental groups of 17 four-week-old turkeys were first infected with avian metapneumovirus and 3 d later with O. rhinotracheale. Enrofloxacin treatment in the drinking water was started 24 h after O. rhinotracheale inoculation. In the dose titration study, enrofloxacin doses of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg of BW were administered for 5 successive days. In the reduced duration medication study, the following enrofloxacin regimens were compared: 25 mg/kg of BW per day on d 0 and 2; 15 mg/kg of BW per day on d 0, 2, and 4; and 10 mg/kg of BW for 5 successive days. In both studies, all enrofloxacin treatments were equally efficacious (i.e., equally capable of shortening the course of clinical disease), eliminating O. rhinotracheale from the respiratory tract and reducing gross lesions. Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale bacteria were not recovered from any of the birds on enrofloxacin-supplemented media, indicating that none of the used treatment regimens promoted the selection of bacterial clones with reduced susceptibility or resistance to this antimicrobial agent. In conclusion, none of the alternative enrofloxacin treatment regimens yielded better results than the current prescribed treatment (i.e., 10 mg/kg of BW for 5 successive days) of O. rhinotracheale infections in turkeys. However, the reduced duration of application would offer a less time-consuming and equally effective alternative.

RESUMEN

We report on the case of an infant who was hospitalized because of failure to thrive, megaloblastic anemia, and delayed psychomotor development. He was 10 months old and had been exclusively breast-fed by his vegan mother. Investigations showed vitamin B(12) deficiency with hematocytopenia and pervasive developmental disorders as well as vitamin K and vitamin D deficiencies. The infant's mother presented the same deficiencies. Introduction of vitamin supplementation normalized the biological disorders, and the infant showed weight gain and neurological improvement. This case highlights that a vegan diet during pregnancy followed by exclusive breast-feeding can induce nutritional deficiencies in the newborn, with clinical consequences. Detecting mother and child vitamin deficiencies and preventing them is essential.

RESUMEN

In the search for genes down-regulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we have identified a cDNA fragment, termed MAST9. Cloning, sequencing, and characterization of the full-length MAST9 cDNA revealed that the entire 2808 nucleotide sequence had an open reading frame of 1992 nucleotides encoding a Mr 75,000 protein. Sequence analysis disclosed a striking homology to SPARC, known to be involved in tumorigenesis. The recently identified "Hevin" cDNA isolated from high endothelial venules is identical to MAST9. Using Northern and Western blot analysis, we showed that MAST9 was down-regulated in the tumor samples of nine non-small cell lung carcinoma patients. Furthermore, we demonstrated that both the bacterially expressed and the endogenous MAST9 proteins form homodimers. The lack of expression in non-small cell lung carcinomas and its homology to SPARC suggest a putative role of MAST9 in lung tumor formation.

RESUMEN

We report the case of a 50-year-old female in whom the connection between hypocalcemia and heart failure was not made until a second hospital admission for left ventricular failure. Under appropriate calcium supplementation the symptoms were relieved within 2 days and the patient remained well thereafter. The hypocalcemia was found to be caused by autoimmune hypoparathyroidism. Heart failure due to hypocalcemia has been rarely reported, and even in textbooks the subject is poorly documented. The physiologic functions of calcium and the implications of deficiency for heart muscle are outlined, with a review of the literature. A treatment regimen for hypocalcemia is recommended.

RESUMEN

Using a magnet-assisted subtraction technique, 17 complementary DNA (cDNA) clones were isolated that were expressed in the normal lung but were decreased or lost in the corresponding tumor tissue of a nonsmall cell lung carcinoma patient. The lack of expression of six magnet-assisted subtraction technique cDNA clones in three additional non-small cell lung carcinoma cases indicates their possible relevance for non-small cell lung carcinoma. Two cDNA clones revealed homology to genes specifically expressed in lung, i.e., pulmonary surfactant-associated protein B and the receptor for advanced glycosylation end products of proteins. Three cDNA clones showed identity to cDNA sequences encoding calmodulin-like protein, glutamine synthetase, and cytoskeletal beta-actin. One cDNA clone is identical to a recently described human expressed sequence tag whose gene is still unknown.

RESUMEN

This study examined the effects of acoustic exposure at different intensities on local oxygenation of the cochlea. The oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of perilymph in the basal scala tympani was measured polarographically in anesthetized guinea pigs exposed to either wide-band noise at 85 dB SPL or a 10 kHz pure tone at 90, 105, or 125 dB SPL for 1 h. Cochlear temperature, heart rate, arterial blood pressure and acid-base status were monitored. The cochlear microphonics (CM) and compound action potentials (CAP) were recorded before and after exposure. There were clear intensity-dependent differences in the effect of acoustic exposure on perilymphatic oxygenation. Moderate exposure intensities (85-90 dB SPL) were found to increase the pO2 by an average of about 20% of the initial level. In contrast, high intensity acoustic exposure (125 dB SPL) resulted in a mean decrease of about 20%. These changes persisted within a subsequent 30-min post-exposure period. There was no significant change in cochlear temperature and cardiorespiratory variables during and after any of the exposures as compared to the controls. CM and CAP amplitudes showed an extensive loss after acoustic overstimulation (125 dB SPL), but no permanent change with lower exposure intensities. These findings suggest that intracochlear oxygenation plays an important role in inner ear physiology during acoustic stimulation.
