RESUMEN

Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, and gastric precancerous lesions (GPLs) are an important stage in the transformation of normal gastric mucosa to gastric cancer. Matched for age and sex, a total of 316 subjects were eventually included from our prospective observation population (including 1007 patients with GPLs and 762 normal controls), and a questionnaire survey was conducted. In total, 10 plasma elements (iron, copper, zinc, selenium, rubidium, strontium, titanium, aluminum, vanadium and arsenic) were measured by applying inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS). A multivariate conditional logistic regression model and Bayesian kernel logistic regression model (BKMR) were used to analyze the association between plasma element concentrations and GPLs. In the multimetal model, plasma titanium concentrations were significantly and positively associated with the prevalence of GPLs, with a fourth-quartile OR of 11.56 ([95% CI]: [2.78-48.13]). Plasma selenium and copper were negatively correlated with GPLs, with the highest quartiles of selenium and copper having an OR of 0.03 ([95% CI]: [0.01-0.15]; P < 0.001) and 0.24 ([95% CI]: [0.07-0.82]), respectively. In the BKMR model, there was a significant negative combined correlation of five metals on GPLs: iron, copper, zinc, selenium, and titanium. The results of this study showed that plasma concentrations of selenium and copper were negatively correlated with GPLs, while plasma concentrations of titanium were positively correlated with GPLs, and the combined action of the five elements was negatively correlated with GPLs.

Theanine is an important quality parameter referring to tea quality. Applying nitrogen fertilizers is one strategy to improve the level of theanine; however, the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on theanine synthesis in tea roots has been less studied. In this study, the bacteria isolated from Qimen County with the maximum potassium (K) solubilization were identified as Bacillus by biochemical and molecular analyses. We show that tartaric and pyruvic acids produced by Bacillus were important components related to K solubilization in vitro. Pot experiments and enzymatic assays in vitro showed that inoculation with Bacillus-secreted organic acids increased the level of available potassium in the soil. The increased K level activated recombinant CsTSI activity (theanine biosynthesis enzyme) and increased ethylamine content (the synthesis precursor of theanine), resulting in promoted theanine synthesis in tea roots. Therefore, our study indicates that Bacillus can be a potential bioinoculant for biofortification of tea.

C60-based magnetic nanospheres were synthesized by coating Fe3O4 nanospheres with silica, then modifying with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a linker and a C60 fullerene stationary phase. The morphologies, magnetic properties, infrared absorption and carbon content of magnetic nanospheres were studied by TEM, VSM, FTIR and carbon and sulfur analyzer. The magnetic nanospheres were employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in nine Chinese herbal medicines. The analyses were conducted by isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main parameters influencing the extraction, including extraction solvent, adsorbent amount, and extraction time were optimized. Method validation showed that the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.02-0.11 µg/kg, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.07-0.36 µg/kg. The spiked recoveries rates for 16 PAHs in white peony root were 84.7-107.2%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was 1.7-8.4%. The established method was further used for the determination 16 PAHs in nine Chinese herbal medicines. Total content of 16 PAHs varied from 73.6 µg/kg (fructus lycii) to 2172.6 µg/kg (astragalus root). The results indicate that the pollution of PAHs in Chinese herbal medicines is serious. The established method can effective detect PAHs contamination in Chinese herbal medicines.

BACKGROUND: Confirmation of food labeling that claims production in a small geographic region is critical to traceability, quality control and brand protection. In the current study, isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) was used to generate profiles of δ13 C and δ15 N to determine if the stable isotope signatures of Keemun black tea differ within the three counties that claim production. Other factors (cultivar type, leaf maturity and manufacturing process) were considered for their potential effects. RESULTS: Both cultivar type and leaf maturity have remarkable impact on the δ15 N values of tea leaves, and that the cultivar influenced the δ13 C values. Keemun black tea from Qimen county could be easily discriminated from samples from Dongzhi and Guichi counties based on δ15 N signatures. The k-NN model was cross-validated with an accuracy of 91.6%. Environmental factors and/or genotype seem to be the major reasons for δ15 N differences in Keemun black tea from the selected regions. CONCLUSION: This article provides a potential effective method to delineate the geographic point-of-origin of Keemun black tea based on δ15 N signatures. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Rinsing dried tea leaves before brewing is a traditional way of preparing rolled oolong tea in China. This study analyzes how rinsing green, black, and oolong tea before brewing affects the levels of pesticide residues in the tea infusion. Eight representative insecticides of different polarities were tracked, namely, three neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam), two organophosphates (dimethoate and malathion), and three pyrethroids (bifenthrin, ß-cypermethrin, and fenvalerate). The results showed that the eight pesticides transferred into the rinse water at rates between 0.2 and 24% after 5, 10, 20, or 30 s. Rinsing tea before brewing reduced the pesticide risk levels by 5-59% in the tea infusion. Five functional components, such as epigallocatechin gallate and caffeine, were reduced by 0-11% in the tea infusion. The results can be used to develop an effective method of rinsing tea before brewing that reduces pesticide exposure risks.
