Antibacterial nanoagents with well-controlled structures are greatly desired to address the challenges of bacterial infections. In this study, a featherlike tellurium-selenium heterostructural nanoadjuvant (TeSe HNDs) was created. TeSe HNDs produced 1O2 and had high photothermal conversion efficiency when stimulated with 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light. To create a synergistic treatment system (TeSe-ICG) with better photothermal and photodynamic capabilities, the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) was then added. With a bactericidal rate of more than 99%, the NIR-mediated TeSe-ICG demonstrated an efficient bactericidal action against both Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). In addition, TeSe-ICG was also effective in treating wound infections and could effectively promote wound healing without obvious toxic side effects. In conclusion, TeSe-ICG is expected to be a good candidate for the treatment of bacterial infections.

Demographic aging is a worldwide phenomenon, cognitive and behavioral impairment is becoming global burden of nerve damage. However, the effect of pharmacological treatment is not satisfying. Therefore, we analyzed the efficacy of music therapy in elderly dementia patients, and if so, whether music therapy can be used as first-line non-pharmacological treatment. A comprehensive literature search was performed on PubMed, EMbase and the Cochrane Library from inception to September 2016. A total of 34 studies (42 analyses, 1757 subjects) were included; all of them had an acceptable quality based on the PEDro and CASP scale scores. Studies based on any type of dementia patient were combined and analyzed by subgroup. The standardized mean difference was -0.42 (-0.74 to -0.11) for disruptive behavior and 0.20 (-0.09 to 0.49) for cognitive function as primary outcomes in random effect models using controls as the comparator; the secondary outcomes were depressive score, anxiety and quality of life. No evidence of publication bias was found based on Begg's and Egger's test. The meta-analysis confirmed that the baseline differences between the two groups were balanced. Subgroup analyses showed that disease sub-type, intervention method, comparator, subject location, trial design, trial period and outcome measure instrument made little difference in outcomes. The meta-regression may have identified the causes of heterogeneity as the intervention method, comparator and trial design. Music therapy was effective when patients received interactive therapy with a compared group. There was positive evidence to support the use of music therapy to treat disruptive behavior and anxiety; there were positive trends supporting the use of music therapy for the treatment of cognitive function, depression and quality of life. Eriocaulon sieboldianum (Sieb. & Zucc. ex Steud.), a genus of Eriocaulon in the Eriocaulaceae family, is an edible and medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. It was processed into healthcare beverages for expelling wind-heat, protecting eyes, and reducing blood fat. Also, it has been used with other herbs as Traditional Chinese herbal compound to treat cancer as adjuvants in tumor therapy in China. However, the active fractions and precise cellular mechanisms of E. sieboldianum extract remain to be illustrated. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of the active fraction of E. sieboldianum on the growth of K562 cells and understand the possible mechanisms of its action. Our findings suggested that the fraction E3 of E. sieboldianum could effectively inhibit the activity of Aurora kinase and induce apoptosis via blocking cell cycle, up-regulating the expression of proapoptotic proteins including p53 and Bax and reducing the expression of Bcl-2. The levels of Cytochrome C, cleaved caspase-9, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP were also found to be increased after treatment with fraction E3 of E. sieboldianum. This study could improve the development of E. sieboldianum and raise its application value in cancer adjuvant therapy. Considering it is both a dietary supplement and a traditional Chinese herbal medicine which exhibits anticancer activities, it can be developed into functional food.

Eriocaulon sieboldianum (Sieb. & Zucc. ex Steud.) is an edible and medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. Often in combination with other herbs, it is processed into healthcare beverages for expelling wind-heat, protecting eyes, and reducing blood lipids. Besides, its water decoction together with other herbs has been utilized to treat cancer in China. However, the active ingredients and the precise cellular mechanisms of E. sieboldianum remain to be elucidated. The Aurora kinase family plays critical roles in the regulation of cell division and has attracted great attention to the identification of small-molecule Aurora kinase inhibitors for potential treatment of cancer. A molecular docking study was employed for docking of the most bioactive compounds. Hispidulin (HPDL) and quercetin-3-O-(6''-O-galloyl)-ß-D-galactopyranoside (QGGP) were singled out as potent inhibitors of Aurora kinase. Their inhibitory activity towards Aurora kinase was further confirmed by the obvious decrease in autophosphorylation of Aurora-A (Thr288) and Aurora-B (Thr232). Moreover, the induction of cell cycle arrest in HepG2 cells and the suppressed phosphorylation of histone H3 were also consistent with the inhibition of Aurora kinase. The data indicate that the E. sieboldianum extract and its two active compounds, HPDL and QGGP, could effectively induce apoptosis via p53, MAPKs and the mitochondrial apoptotic pathways. These findings could improve the understanding and enhance the development of drugs based on E. sieboldianum and raise its application value in anticancer therapy or prevention. In addition, our results indicated that Aurora kinase might be a novel target of HPDL and QGGP.

To improve the dissolution and oral absorption of Rhizoma corydalis decumbentis extracts (RCDE), a famous traditional Chinese herbal medicine which contains poorly water-soluble active components, self-emulsifying drug-delivery systems (SEDDS) were designed and evaluated in vitro and in vivo for the first time. Six formulations were prepared, and pseudoternary phase diagrams were constructed to identify the efficient self-emulsication region through the modified visual test. The optimized formulation consisted of 45% Solutol, 40% ethyl oleate, and 15% Transcutol P. The mean droplet size distribution of the optimized SEDDS was less than 100 nm. The release of the active components (protopine and tetrahydropalmatine) in RCDE from SEDDS hard gelatin capsules showed a faster rate in comparison with the commercial tablets. After oral administration of RCDE SEDDS capsules or the commercial tablets to fasted rats, the relative bioavailability of SEDDS capsules for protopine and tetrahydropalmatine was 209.7% and 133.2% compared with commercial tablets, respectively. Our study indicated that SEDDS has the potential to improve the bioavailability of traditional Chinese medicines, in which many active components are hydrophobic, such as RCDE.

A sensitive and specific liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of tetrahydropalmatine, protopine and palmatine in rat plasma using phenacetin as the internal standard (IS). Two hundred microliters plasma samples were extracted by dichloromethane under a strong basic condition. The analytes were separated by a C18 column and detected with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer. The used mobile phase was acetonitrile-water (40:60, v/v) containing 5mM ammonium acetate and 0.2% glacial acetic acid. Detection was carried out by positive electrospray ionization in selected ion reaction (SIR) mode at m/z 356.6 for tetrahydropalmatine, 354.6 for protopine, 352.6 for palmatine and 180.4 for the IS, respectively. The method was validated over the concentration range of 1.00-500ngmL(-1) and the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 1.00ngmL(-1) for all three analytes. The intra- and inter-day precision values were less than 9% relative standard deviation (R.S.D.), and the relative error ranged from -7.4 to 4.8%. The extraction recoveries were on average 91.42% for tetrahydropalmatine, 84.75% for protopine, 57.26% for palmatine, and 83.18% for IS. The validated method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of tetrahydropalmatine, protopine and palmatine in rats after oral administration of Rhizoma Corydalis Decumbentis extract.
