RESUMEN

Present review emphatically introduces the synthesis, biocompatibility, and applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), including their antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. A comprehensive discussion of various synthesis methods for AgNPs, with a particular focus on green chemistry mediated by plant extracts has been made. Recent research has revealed that the optical properties of AgNPs, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), depend on the particle size, as well as the synthesis methods, preparation synthesis parameters, and used reducing agents. The significant emphasis on the use of synthesized AgNPs as antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal agents in various applications has been reviewed. Furthermore, the application areas have been thoroughly examined, providing a detailed discussion of the underlying mechanisms, which aids in determining the optimal control parameters during the synthesis process of AgNPs. Furthermore, the challenges encountered while utilizing AgNPs and the corresponding advancements to overcome them have also been addressed. This review not only summarizes the achievements and current status of plant-mediated green synthesis of AgNPs but also explores the future prospects of these materials and technology in diverse areas, including bioactive applications.

Osteoporosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that severely affects quality of life. Cornus officinalis is a Chinese herbal medicine with various bioactive ingredients, among which morroniside is its signature ingredient. Although anti-bone resorption drugs are the main treatment for bone loss, promoting bone anabolism is more suitable for increasing bone mass. Therefore, identifying changes in bone formation induced by morroniside may be conducive to developing effective intervention methods. In this study, morroniside was found to promote the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) and inhibit inflammation-induced bone loss in an in vivo mouse model of inflammatory bone loss. Morroniside enhanced bone density and bone microstructure, and inhibited the expression of IL6, IL1ß, and ALP in serum (p < 0.05). Furthermore, in in vitro experiments, BMSCs exposed to 0-256 µM morroniside did not show cytotoxicity. Morroniside inhibited the expression of IL6 and IL1ß and promoted the expression of the osteogenic transcription factors Runx2 and OCN. Furthermore, morroniside promoted osteocalcin and Runx2 expression and inhibited TRAF6-mediated NF-κB and MAPK signaling, as well as osteoblast growth and NF-κB nuclear transposition. Thus, morroniside promoted osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, slowed the occurrence of the inflammatory response, and inhibited bone loss in mice with inflammatory bone loss.

Trace metal elements, such as iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, are essential nutrients for biological processes. Although their intake demand is low, they play a crucial role in cell homeostasis as the cofactors of various enzymes. Symbiotic intestinal microorganisms compete with their host for the use of trace metal elements. Moreover, the metabolic processes of trace metal elements in the host and microorganisms affect the organism's health. Supplementation or the lack of trace metal elements in the host can change the intestinal microbial community structure and function. Functional changes in symbiotic microorganisms can affect the host's metabolism of trace metal elements. In this review, we discuss the absorption and transport processes of trace metal elements in the host and symbiotic microorganisms and the effects of dynamic changes in the levels of trace metal elements on the intestinal microbial community structure. We also highlight the participation of trace metal elements as enzyme cofactors in the host immune process. Our findings indicate that the host uses metal nutrition immunity or metal poisoning to resist pathogens and improve immunity.

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia has brought serious health threats and economic burdens to patients worldwide. There is no sovereign remedy for thalassemia, both conventional and Traditional Medicine (TM) methods have certain effects on this disease. As typical of TM, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been widely used in the treatment of thalassemia. Previous studies mainly focused on conventional treatments for thalassemia and patients' medical burden, but no research has examined the effects of TCM use on the economic burdens for thalassemia inpatients in mainland China. The main objective of this study is to compare the medical cost differences between TCM users and TCM nonusers, furtherly, we will discuss the role of TCM use in the treatment of thalassemia. METHODS: We employed the 2010-2016 Medicare claims database provided by the China Health Insurance Research Association (CHIRA). Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the differences between TCM users and TCM nonusers. Multiple regression analysis was performed using the ordinary least squares method to compare the TCM users' inpatient medical cost with TCM nonusers', and to further examine the correlation between TCM cost, conventional medication cost and nonpharmacy cost for TCM users. RESULTS: A total of 588 urban thalassemia inpatients were identified, including 222 TCM users and 366 TCM nonusers. The inpatient medical cost of TCM users was RMB10,048 (USD1,513), which was significantly higher than TCM nonusers (RMB1,816 (USD273)). Total inpatient cost for TCM users was 67.4% higher than those of TCM nonusers (P < 0.001). With confounding factors fixed, we found that the conventional medication cost and nonpharmacy cost were positively correlated with TCM cost. CONCLUSION: Total hospitalization expenses for TCM users were higher than TCM nonusers. Both the conventional medication cost and nonpharmacy cost of TCM users were all higher than TCM nonusers. We infer TCM plays a complementary role, rather than an alternative, in the treatment of thalassemia due to the lack of cooperative treatment guidelines. It is recommended that a cooperative diagnosis and treatment guidelines should be generated to balance the use of TCM and conventional medicine for treating thalassemia, so as to reduce the economic burdens on patients.

RESUMEN

Inflammatory arthritis, primarily including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, is a group of chronic inflammatory diseases, whose general feature is joint dysfunction with chronic pain and eventually causes disability in older people. To date, both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have developed a variety of therapeutic methods for inflammatory arthritis and achieved excellent results. But there is still a long way to totally cure these diseases. TCM has been used to treat various joint diseases for thousands of years in Asia. In this review, we summarize clinical efficacies of TCM in inflammatory arthritis treatment after reviewing the results demonstrated in meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and clinical trials. We pioneered taking inflammatory arthritis-related cell targets of TCM as the entry point and further elaborated the molecular targets inside the cells of TCM, especially the signaling pathways. In addition, we also briefly discussed the relationship between gut microbiota and TCM and described the role of drug delivery systems for using TCM more accurately and safely. We provide updated and comprehensive insights into the clinical application of TCM for inflammatory arthritis treatment. We hope this review can guide and inspire researchers to further explore mechanisms of the anti-arthritis activity of TCM and make a great leap forward in comprehending the science of TCM.

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterized by decreased bone density and quality, destruction of bone microstructure, and increased bone fragility. Extracellular vesicles are lipid bilayer nanoparticles that participate in intercellular communication. Extracellular vesicles are becoming popular in the study of osteoporosis and the bone cell microenvironment. Extracellular vesicles can transmit cell signals and regulate bone homeostasis. Our previous studies revealed that the Chinese herbal medicine Guilu Erxian Glue promotes type I collagen synthesis and osteoprotegerin secretion by osteoblasts in rats, reverses the imbalance of bone homeostasis, and alleviates osteoporosis. Objective: We investigated how osteoblast-derived extracellular vesicles treated with Guilu Erxian Glue affected osteoclasts in vitro. Methods: We quantified osteoclast differentiation of RAW 264.7 using TRAP staining, cell apoptosis using flow cytometry, extracellular vesicle uptake by fluorescence tracing, bone absorption functions by bone resorption lacuna , and transcription of key genes by quantitative real-time PCR. Results: Fluorescently labeled mouse preosteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells secreted nanoscale substances less than 1 µm in diameter. Mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells adsorbed these nanoparticles and PKH26-labeled extracellular vesicles derived from MC3T3-E1 cells on the cell membrane surface. Extracellular vesicles from MC3T3-E1 cells treated with Guilu Erxian Glue inhibited the differentiation of osteoclasts induced by receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand and macrophage colony-stimulating factor and reduced the number of lacunae formed by osteoclasts in vitro compared with controls. Extracellular vesicles from MC3T3-E1 cells treated with Guilu Erxian Glue downregulated the relative messenger RNA expression of c-Fos, cathepsin K, nuclear factor of activated T cells 1, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase in osteoclasts, which may be part of the mechanism by which they regulate osteoclasts. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that extracellular vesicles are essential for signal exchange between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Although we do not know how Guilu Erxian Glue affects the signaling molecules carried by extracellular vesicles, we have shown for the first time, to our knowledge, that Guilu Erxian Glue can inhibit osteoclast differentiation and function via osteoblast-derived extracellular vesicles. Our findings are conducive to providing a new target for the development of osteoporosis drugs.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long been a widely recognized medical approach and has been covered by China's basic medical insurance schemes to treat lung cancer. But there was a lack of nationwide research to illustrate the impact of the use of TCM on lung cancer patients' economic burden in mainland China. Therefore, we conduct a nationwide study to reveal whether the use of TCM could increase or decrease the medical expenditure of lung cancer inpatients in mainland China. METHODS: This is a 7-year cross-sectional study from 2010 to 2016. The data is a random sample of 5% from lung cancer claims data records of Chinese Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI). Mann-Whitney test was used to compare inpatient cost data with positive skewness. Ordinary least squares regression analysis was performed to compare the total TCM users' hospitalization cost with TCM nonusers', to examine whether TCM use is the key factor inducing relatively high medical expenditure. RESULT: A total of 47,393 lung cancer inpatients were included in this study, with 38,697 (81.7%) of them at least using one kind of TCM approach. The per inpatient medical cost of TCM users was RMB18,798 (USD2,830), which was 65.2% significantly higher than that of TCM nonusers (P < 0.001). The medication cost, conventional medication cost, and nonpharmacy cost of TCM users were all higher than TCM nonusers, illustrating the higher medical cost of TCM users was not induced by TCM only. With confounding factors fixed, there was a positive correlation between TCM cost and conventional medication cost, nonpharmacy cost (Coef. = 0.283 and 0.211, all P < 0.001), indicting synchronous increase of TCM costs and conventional medication cost for TCM users. CONCLUSION: The use of TCM could not offset the utilization of conventional medicine, demonstrating TCM mainly played a complementary role but not an alternative role in the inpatient treatment of lung cancer. A joint Clinical Guideline that could balance the use of TCM and Conventional medicine should be developed for the purpose of reducing economic burden for lung cancer inpatients.

We sought to determine whether machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) applied to electronic medical records could improve performance of automated health-care claims-based algorithms to identify anaphylaxis events using data on 516 patients with outpatient, emergency department, or inpatient anaphylaxis diagnosis codes during 2015-2019 in 2 integrated health-care institutions in the Northwest United States. We used one site's manually reviewed gold-standard outcomes data for model development and the other's for external validation based on cross-validated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), positive predictive value (PPV), and sensitivity. In the development site 154 (64%) of 239 potential events met adjudication criteria for anaphylaxis compared with 180 (65%) of 277 in the validation site. Logistic regression models using only structured claims data achieved a cross-validated AUC of 0.58 (95% CI: 0.54, 0.63). Machine learning improved cross-validated AUC to 0.62 (0.58, 0.66); incorporating NLP-derived covariates further increased cross-validated AUCs to 0.70 (0.66, 0.75) in development and 0.67 (0.63, 0.71) in external validation data. A classification threshold with cross-validated PPV of 79% and cross-validated sensitivity of 66% in development data had cross-validated PPV of 78% and cross-validated sensitivity of 56% in external data. Machine learning and NLP-derived data improved identification of validated anaphylaxis events.

This study aimed to explore the protective effects of L-theanine supplementation on the diquat-challenged weaned piglets. A total of 160 weaned piglets were randomly divided into 4 groups using a 2 × 2 two-factor design, there were 4 replicates per group and 10 pigs per replicate. Piglets were fed diets (with 1000 mg/kg L-theanine addition or not), then challenged with diquat or saline on day 7. 21 days after challenge, two pigs from each replicate were selected for sample collection. Results showed that supplement with 1000 mg/kg L-theanine down-regulated the diarrhea rate, serum D-lactate level, tumor necrosis factor-α, and phosphorylation of extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK1/2), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling in pigs without diquat challenge (p < 0.05). While for diquat-challenged piglets, L-theanine addition increased average daily gain, jejunum villus height, and interferon-γ level (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, L-theanine addition decreased the diarrhea rates and mortality, serum D-lactate level, and phosphorylation of ERK and JNK in diquat-challenged pigs (p < 0.05). These results demonstrate that L-theanine pretreatment could alleviate diquat-induced oxidative stress and improve intestinal barrier function in diquat-challenged weaned piglets, which can be attributed to suppression of MAPK phosphorylation signaling pathways.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC), the CPC and the government have highligh-ted the development of traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and issued a series of policies, such as the Plan for Protection and Deve-lopment of Chinese Medicinal Materials(2015-2020) forwarded by the General Office of the State Council in 2015, the Plan for Healthy Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(2015-2020) released by the General Office of the State Council in the same year, the Healthy China 2030 Plan published by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2016, the Law of the People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine which took effect on July 2017, On the Preservation and Innovative Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine promulgated by CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2019, and Plan for the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period of China released by the General Office of the State Council in March 2022, to promote the development of the TCM industry, which have brought historical opportunities to the TCM industry. However, TCM industry faces various challenges in the development. In terms of drug development in TCM, the current studies mainly focused on the chemical research and technical requests, which neglected TCM characteristics and cased in conformity between new drug transformation of TCM and clinical practice. Therefore, a more considerable and profound authoritative guideline is needed, and innovative thought and research are necessary for academics and the industry. Through the investigation of the development TCM industry in recent years, this study summarized the policies on and trends of Chinese medicinal materials, new drug development in TCM, catalogue of national basic drugs, and national basic health insurance, and proposed suggestions for further development of TCM industry.

The association between socioeconomic status (SES) and bone mineral density (BMD) in men remains controversial. We showed that SES was positively associated with BMD in American men. Confounding factors like race/ethnicity and age could affect the association. INTRODUCTION: Based on the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2011-2020, this article aims to investigate the association of SES (poverty income ratio (PIR) and education level) with the BMD in American men. METHODS: We evaluated the association of SES with BMD in 4446 men aged ≥ 20 years (mean age, 41.0 ± 13.4 years) from the NHANES 2011-2020. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine. We used multivariate linear regression models to examine the relationship between SES and total spine BMD, adjusted for a large range of confounding factors. RESULTS: Compared with other PIR quarters, individuals in the highest quarter of PIR were more likely to be older and white and had fewer smoking or drinking behaviors. After adjusting for race/ethnicity, age, drinking and smoking behavior, body mass index (BMI), total protein, serum calcium, serum uric acid, cholesterol, serum phosphorus, and blood urea nitrogen, PIR was positively correlated with total spine BMD (ß = 0.004 95% CI: 0.001-0.007, P = 0.006). Individuals with the highest degree (college degree or above) had a 0.057 g/cm2 greater BMD than that of the lowest degree (less than 9th grade) (ß = 0.057 95% CI: 0.037-0.077, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that SES was positively associated with the lumbar BMD among American men. Clinicians, healthcare providers, and policymakers should consider the unequal SES of men when implementing osteoporosis prevention and treatment strategies.

An 8-week feeding trial was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary leucine (Leu) and valine (Val) levels on growth performance, glycolipid metabolism and immune response in Oreochromis niloticus. Fish (15.23 ± 0.05 g) were randomly fed four diets containing two Leu levels (1.2% and 2.3%) and two Val levels (0.7% and 1.4%) as a 2 × 2 experimental design (LL-LV, LL-HV, HL-LV and HL-HV). Compared with LL-LV group, the growth parameters (final weight, daily growth coefficient (DGC) and growth rate per metabolic body weight (GRMBW)), feed conversion rate (FCR), the activities of intestinal amylase, lipase, creatine kinase (CK) and Na+, K+-ATPase, liver NAD+/NADH ratio, as well as the expression of SIRT1, GK, PK, FBPase, PPARα, CPT IA, ACO and IL10 all increased significantly in the HL-LV group; however, in the high Val group, final weight, DGC, GRMBW, intestinal enzyme activities, as well as the expression of PEPCK, SREBP1, FAS, IL8 and IL10 of the HL-HV group were significantly lower than those of the LL-HV group, while the opposite was true for the remaining indicators. Significant interactions between dietary Leu and Val were observed in final weight, DGC, GRMBW, plasma IL1ß and IL6 levels, intestinal amylase and CK activities, liver NAD+/NADH ratio, as well as the expression of SIRT1, PK, PEPCK, FBPase, SREBP1, FAS, PPARα, CPT IA, ACO, NF-κB1, IL1ß, IL6 and IL10. The highest values of growth parameters, intestinal enzyme activities and expression of SIRT1, FBPase, PPARα, CPT IA and ACO were observed in the HL-LV group, while the opposite was true for the expression of SREBP1, FAS, PPARα, NF-κB1, IL1ß and IL6. Overall, our findings indicated that dietary Leu and Val can effect interactively, and fish fed with diets containing 2.3% Leu with 0.7% Val had the best growth performance and hepatic health status of O. niloticus.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy-related osteoporosis (DNOP) is the most common comorbid bone metabolic disorder associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). The Liuwei Dihuang Pill (LWD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine widely used to treat diabetic complications, including diabetic nephropathy (DN). This study aimed to identify the biomarkers of the mechanisms of DNOP in LWD with systems biology approaches. METHODS: Herein, we performed an integrated analysis of the GSE51674 and GSE63446 datasets from the GEO database via weighted gene co-expression network and network pharmacology (WGCNA) analysis. In addition, a network pharmacology approach, including bioactive compounds, was used with oral bioavailability (OB) and drug-likeness (DL) evaluation. Next, target prediction, functional enrichment analysis, network analysis, and virtual docking were used to investigate the mechanisms of LWD in DNOP. RESULTS: WGCNA successfully identified 63 DNOP-related miRNAs. Among them, miR-574 was significantly upregulated in DN and OP samples. A total of 117 targets of 22 components associated with LWD in DNOP were obtained. The cellular response to nitrogen compounds, the AGERAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, and the MAPK signaling pathway were related to the main targets. Network analysis showed that kaempferol and quercetin were the most significant components. MAPK1 was identified as a potential target of miR-574 and the hub genes in the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. The docking models demonstrated that kaempferol and quercetin had a strong binding affinity for Asp 167 of MAPK1. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that miR-574 may play important roles in DNOP, and the therapeutic effects of kaempferol and quercetin on LWD in DNOP might be mediated by miR-574 by targeting MAPK1. Our results provide new perspectives for further studies on the anti-DNOP mechanism of LWD.

Malania oleifera (Olacaceae), a tree species endemic to Southwest China, has seed oils enriched with nervonic acid and is therefore good source of this chemical. Because of this, there are promising industrial perspective in the artificial cultivation and use of this species. Understanding the variability in the fruit characters among individuals forms the basis or resource prospection. In the current investigation, fifty-three mature fruiting trees were sampled from two locations with divergent climates (Guangnan and Funing). Morphological characterization of fruits (fruit and stone weight, fruit transverse and longitudinal diameter, stone transverse and longitudinal diameter) was conducted, and the concentration of seed oil and its fatty acid composition were also analyzed in all individuals. Differences in all the morphological characters studied were more significant among individual trees than between different geographic localities, even though these had different climates. Eleven fatty acids were identified contributing between 91.39 and 96.34% of the lipids, and the major components were nervonic acid (38.93-47.24%), octadecenoic acid (26.79-32.08%), docosenoic acid (10.94-17.24%). The seed oil content (proportion of oil in seed kernel) and the proportion of nervonic acid were both higher in Funing, which has a higher average climatic temperature than Guangnan. The concentrations of nervonic acid and octadecenoic acid with the low coefficients of variation in the seed oil of M. oleifera were relatively stable in contrast to the other fatty acids. There were significant positive correlations between fruit morphological characters, but the amount of seed oil and the concentrations of its components were not correlated with any morphological character. This study provides an understanding of morphological variation in wild M. oleifera individuals. Wild individuals with excellent fruit traits could be selected and would make promising candidates for commercial cultivation.

Nanozymes have emerged as a fascinating nanomaterial with enzyme-like characteristics for addressing the limitations of natural enzymes. Nevertheless, how to improve the relatively low catalytic activity still remains challenging. Herein, a facile recrystallizing salt template-assisted chemical vapor deposition method was utilized to synthesize MoSe2/PCN heterostructures. This heterostructure displays remarkably enhanced light boosting peroxidase-like activities. Notably, the maximal reaction velocity of this heterostructure attains 17.81 and 86.89 µM min-1 [for o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), respectively]. Moreover, various characterization means were performed to explore the mechanism deeply. It is worth mentioning that the photoinduced electrons generated by the heterostructure directly react with H2O2 to yield plentiful •OH for the effective oxidation of OPD and TMB. Therefore, this work offers a promising approach for improving peroxidase-like activity by light stimulation and actuating the development of enzyme-based applications.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been widely adopted by the Chinese people and has been covered by China's basic medical insurance schemes to treat ischemic stroke. Previous research has mainly highlighted the therapy effect of TCM on ischemic stroke patients. Some studies have demonstrated that employing TCM can reduce the medical burden on other diseases. But no research has explored whether using TCM could reduce inpatient medical cost for ischemic stroke in mainland China. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the use of TCM on the total inpatient cost of ischemic stroke and to explore whether TCM has played the role of being complementary to, or an alternative for, conventional medicine to treat ischemic stroke. METHODS: We conducted a national cross-sectional analysis based on a 5% random sample from claims data of China Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI) schemes in 2015. Mann-Whitney test was used to compare unadjusted total inpatient cost, conventional medication cost, and nonpharmacy cost estimates. Ordinary least square regression analysis was performed to compare demographics-adjusted total inpatient cost and to examine the association between TCM cost and conventional medication cost. RESULTS: A total of 47321 urban inpatients diagnosed with ischemic stroke were identified in our study, with 92.6% (43843) of the patients using TCM in their inpatient treatment. Total inpatient cost for TCM users was significantly higher than TCM nonusers (USD 1217 versus USD 1036, P < 0.001). Conventional medication cost was significantly lower for TCM users (USD 335 versus USD 436, P < 0.001). The average cost of TCM per patient among TCM users was USD 289. Among TCM users, conventional medication costs were found to be positively associated with TCM cost after adjusting for confounding factors (Coef. = 0.144, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Although the use of TCM reduced the cost of conventional medicine compared with TCM nonusers, TCM imposed an extra financial component on the total inpatient cost on TCM users. Our study suggests that TCM mainly played a complementary role to conventional medicine in ischemic stroke treatment in mainland China.

Zingiber cassumunar is an important plant used in traditional medicine and as a natural mosquito repellent. However, the compounds responsible for the repellent activity of the plant are still unknown. The aim of the study is to identify the components of Z. cassumunar essential oil that show repellent activity against Aedes albopictus. We also evaluated the larvicidal and adulticidal activities of Z. cassumunar essential oil against Ae. albopictus. In-cage mosquito repellent experiments showed that Z. cassumunar essential oil possessed moderate repellent activity with a minimum effective dose (MED) of 0.16 ± 0.01 mg/cm2, compared to reference standard N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET, 0.03 ± 0.01 mg/cm2). Bioassay-guided fractionation identified the major active compound of Z. cassumunar essential oil as (-)-terpinen-4-ol (1) (MED: 0.19 ± 0 mg/cm2). We also found that Z. cassumunar essential oil showed moderate larvicidal activity against first instar larvae of Ae. albopictus with a LC50 (50% lethal concentration) of 44.9 µg/L after 24 h. Fumigation bioassays showed that Z. cassumunar essential oil exhibits moderate adulticidal activity against Ae. albopictus with a LC50 of 5.44%, while (-)-terpinen-4-ol showed significant adulticidal activity with a LC50 of 2.10% after 24 h. This study verifies that the Z. cassumunar essential oil has mosquito repellent activity, and that (-)-terpinen-4-ol is mainly responsible for this activity. Furthermore, this study provides scientific support for the folk usage of Z. cassumunar essential oil as mosquito repellent and indicates that Z. cassumunar essential oil and (-)-terpinen-4-ol can be used as plant-derived repellents and insecticides for mosquito control.

The effect of alfalfa saponins (AS) supplementation on the meat quality especially the color for growing lamb was investigated. Fifty Hu male lambs with body weights (BW, 19.21 ± 0.45 kg) were divided into five groups and supplemented AS with 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 mg/kg of dietary dry matter intake. After 90 days, all lambs were slaughtered. The longissimus thoracis muscle in lamb displayed significant changes in the content of intramuscular fat, especially n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and drip loss within AS treatment (p < .05) between control and treatments groups. Redness (a*) significantly improved in both 0-day and 7-day storage with the AS supplementation coupled with the percentage of met-myoglobin reduction (p < .05). The redness (a*) change may result from improved met-myoglobin reducing activity, antioxidant enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase (p < .05) by AS supplementation in muscle. These enzymes may help to protect mitochondria function and reduce met-myoglobin, which bring a bright and red meat color.

BACKGROUND: Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is one of the main mechanisms of spinal cord injury (SCI) pathology and can affect the physiological state of neurons. Icariin (ICA), the main pharmacological component of Epimedium, can relieve the symptoms of patients with SCI and has obvious protective effects on neurons through ERS. METHODS: PC12 cells were induced to differentiate into neurons by nerve growth factor and identified by flow cytometry. Cell proliferation was detected by CCK8 method, cell viability was detected by SRB assay, apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry and microstructure of ER was observed by transmission electron microscope. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of CHOP and Grp78, and qPCR was used to detect the mRNA expression of CHOP and Grp78. RESULTS: The results of CCK8, SRB and flow cytometry showed that ICA could relieve ERS and reduce apoptosis of PC12 cells. The results of transmission microscope showed that ICA could reduce apoptosis of PC12 cells caused by ERS. The results of Western blot and q-PCR showed that ICA could inhibit ERS by down-regulating the expression of CHOP and Grp78. CONCLUSIONS: ICA can inhibit ERS and promote the repair of PC12 cells by down-regulating the expression of CHOP and Grp78. ICA has the potential to promote the recovery of spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: The present work was undertaken to evaluate the effects of storage time, choline chloride, and high concentrations of Cu and Zn on the kinetic behavior of vitamin degradation during storage in two vitamin premixes and four vitamin-trace mineral (VTM) premixes. METHODS: Two vitamin premixes (with or without 160,000 mg/kg of choline) were stored at 25°C and 60% humidity. Besides, four VTM premixes were used to evaluate the effects of choline (0 vs 40,000 mg/kg) and trace minerals (low CuSO4+ZnO vs high CuSO4+ZnO) on vitamin stability in VTM premixes stored in room, and the VTM premixes were stored in room temperature at 22°C. Subsamples from each vitamin and VTM premix were collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months. The retention of vitamin A (VA), vitamin D3 (VD3), vitamin E (VE), vitamin K3 (VK3), vitamin B1 (VB1), vitamin B2 (VB2), vitamin B3 (VB3), vitamin B5 (VB5), and vitamin B6 (VB6) in vitamin premixes and VTM premixes during storage was determined. The stability of vitamins in vitamin premixes and VTM premixes was determined and reported as the residual vitamin activity (% of initial) at each sampling point. RESULTS: The effect of choline on VK3 retention was significant in vitamin premixes (p<0.05). The negative effect of storage time was significant for the retentions of VD3, VK3, VB1, VB2, VB5, and VB6 in vitamin premix (p<0.05). For VTM premixes, negative effect of storage time was significant (p<0.05) for the losses of vitamin in VTM premixes. Choline and high concentrations of Cu and Zn significantly increased VA, VK3, VB1, and VB2 loss during storage (p<0.05). The supplementation of high concentrations of Cu and Zn significantly decreased the concentrations of VD3 and VB6 (p<0.05) in VTM premixes at extended storage time. CONCLUSION: The maximum vitamin stability was detected in vitamin and VTM premixes containing no choline or excess Cu and Zn. The results indicated that extended storage time increased degradation of vitamin in vitamin or VTM premixes. These results may provide useful information for vitamin and VTM premixes to improve the knowledge of vitamin in terms of its stability.
