RESUMEN

The effectiveness of herbal medicine in treating diabetes has grown in recent years, but the precise mechanism by which it does so is still unclear to both medical professionals and diabetics. In traditional Chinese medicine, mulberry leaf is used to treat inflammation, colds, and antiviral illnesses. Mulberry leaves are one of the herbs with many medicinal applications, and as mulberry leaf study grows, there is mounting evidence that these leaves also have potent anti-diabetic properties. The direct role of mulberry leaf as a natural remedy in the treatment of diabetes has been proven in several studies and clinical trials. However, because mulberry leaf is a more potent remedy for diabetes, a deeper understanding of how it works is required. The bioactive compounds flavonoids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, polyphenols, volatile oils, sterols, amino acids, and a variety of inorganic trace elements and vitamins, among others, have been found to be abundant in mulberry leaves. Among these compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols have a stronger link to diabetes. Of course, trace minerals and vitamins also contribute to blood sugar regulation. Inhibiting alpha glucosidase activity in the intestine, regulating lipid metabolism in the body, protecting pancreatic -cells, lowering insulin resistance, accelerating glucose uptake by target tissues, and improving oxidative stress levels in the body are some of the main therapeutic properties mentioned above. These mechanisms can effectively regulate blood glucose levels. The therapeutic effects of the bioactive compounds found in mulberry leaves on diabetes mellitus and their associated molecular mechanisms are the main topics of this paper's overview of the state of the art in mulberry leaf research for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

RESUMEN

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important food crops in the world. Drought is currently the most important abiotic factor affecting maize yield. L-arginine has emerged as a nontoxic plant growth regulator that enhances the tolerance of plants to drought. An experiment was conducted to examine the role of L-arginine in alleviating the inhibitory effects of drought on the photosynthetic capacity and activities of antioxidant enzymes when the plants were subjected to drought stress. The results showed that the biomass of maize seedlings decreased significantly under a 20% polyethylene glycol-simulated water deficit compared with the control treatment. However, the exogenous application of L-arginine alleviated the inhibition of maize growth induced by drought stress. Further analysis of the photosynthetic parameters showed that L-arginine partially restored the chloroplasts' structure under drought stress and increased the contents of chlorophyll, the performance index on an adsorption basis, and Fv/Fm by 151.3%, 105.5%, and 37.1%, respectively. Supplementation with L-arginine also reduced the oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and superoxide ions by 27.2%, 10.0%, and 31.9%, respectively. Accordingly, the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase increased by 11.6%, 108.5%, 104.4%, 181.1%, 18.3%, and 46.1%, respectively, under drought. Thus, these findings suggest that L-arginine can improve the drought resistance of maize seedlings by upregulating their rate of photosynthesis and their antioxidant capacity.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a common clinical cardiovascular disease, and its morbidity and mortality rates are increasing, which brings a serious burden to the family and society. Dyslipidemia is one of the most important risk factors for CHD. However, it is difficult to reduce blood lipids to an ideal state with the administration of a statin alone. Tongxinluo capsule (TXLC), as a Chinese patent medicine, has received extensive attention in the treatment of CHD in recent years. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to provide evidence-based medicine for TXLC combined with atorvastatin in the treatment of CHD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate systematically the effectiveness and safety of TXLC combined with atorvastatin in the treatment of CHD. METHODS: Seven English and Chinese electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, VIP, CBM, and Wanfang) were searched from inception to January 2020, to search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on TXLC combined with atorvastatin in the treatment of CHD. Two researchers independently screened the literature according to the literature inclusion and exclusion criteria and performed quality assessment and data extraction on the included RCTs. We performed a systematic review following Cochrane Collaboration Handbook and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and using a measurement tool to assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews (AMSTAR 2). The quality of outcomes was evaluated by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). And meta-analysis was performed by Review Manager 5.2. RESULTS: A total of 15 RCTs with 1,578 participants were included in this review. Compared to atorvastatin treatment, TXLC combined with atorvastatin treatment showed potent efficacy when it came to the effectiveness of clinical treatment (RR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.18, 1.29; P < 0.00001), total cholesterol (TC; MD = -1.21; 95% CI, -1.53, -0.89; P < 0.00001), triacylglycerol (TG; MD = -0.73; 95% CI, -0.81, -0.65; P < 0.00001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; MD = 0.27; 95% CI, 0.23, 0.31; P < 0.00001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; MD = -0.72; 95% CI, -0.80, -0.64; P < 0.00001), C-reactive protein (CRP; SMD = -2.06; 95% CI, -2.56, -1.57; P < 0.00001), frequency of angina pectoris (SMD = -1.41; 95% CI, -1.97, -0.85; P < 0.00001), duration of angina pectoris (MD = -2.30; 95% CI, -3.39, -1.21; P < 0.0001), and adverse reactions (RR = 0.84; 95% CI, 0.51, 1.39; P=0.50). No serious adverse events or reactions were mentioned in these RCTs. According to the PRISMA guidelines, although all studies were not fully reported in accordance with the checklist item, the reported items exceeded 80% of all items. With the AMSTAR 2 standard, the methodological quality assessment found that 9 studies were rated low quality and 6 studies were rated critically low quality. Based on the results of the systematic review, the GRADE system recommended ranking method was used to evaluate the quality of evidence and the recommendation level. The results showed that the level of evidence was low, and the recommendation intensity was a weak recommendation. CONCLUSIONS: TXLC combined with atorvastatin in the treatment of CHD can effectively improve the effectiveness of clinical treatment, significantly reduce the frequency and duration of angina pectoris, decrease blood lipids, and improve inflammatory factors. However, due to the low quality of the literature included in these studies and the variability of the evaluation methods of each study, there is still a need for a more high-quality, large sample, multicenter clinical randomized control for further demonstration.

RESUMEN

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) with different molecular weights (LBP1, LBP2 and LBP3) of 92,441 Da, 7714 Da, and 3188 Da were used as stabilizers and capping agents to prepare uniformly dispersed selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), and determined the storage stability. In addition, the anti-fatigue activity of LBP-decorated SeNPs with the best stability (LBP1-SeNPs) was estimated by using forced swimming test. The results showed that LBP1-SeNPs exhibited smaller particle size and more excellent stability than those of LBP2-SeNPs and LBP3-SeNPs when the storage time was extended to 30 days, and the average particle size was maintained at about 105.4 nm. The exhaustion swimming time of all tested dose groups of LBP1-SeNPs was significantly longer than the control group (p < 0.05), and the high-dose group among them was even obviously longer than the positive group (p < 0.05). The results of glycogen, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood lactic acid (BLA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were further confirmed that LBP1-SeNPs could relieve fatigue by increasing the reserve of glycogen, enhancing antioxidant enzyme levels and regulating metabolic mechanism. These results demonstrated that LBP1-SeNPs could be developed as a potential anti-fatigue nutritional supplement.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of Xueshuantong injection (Panax notoginseng saponins) in preventing deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of lower extremity after orthopedic surgery. METHODS: The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Xueshuantong injection in prevention of lower extremity DVT after orthopedic surgery were retrieved from CNKI, Wanfang database, VIP, PubMed, and Cochrane Library by August 2020. Revman5.2 was used to analyze the results. RESULTS: A total of 20 articles including 2336 patients were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that the incidence of DVT in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group; after operation, the D-dimer (Ddimer), thrombin time (APTT), and prothrombin time (PT) in the experimental group were significantly improved compared with those in the control group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Xueshuantong injection can effectively prevent the formation of lower extremity DVT after orthopedic surgery and antagonize the postoperative hypercoagulable state of blood, which has high clinical value.

RESUMEN

Glioma is one of the most common malignant tumors of the central nervous system with a poor prognosis at present due to lack of effective treatment options. Its initiation, migration, and multipotency are affected by cancer stem cell's transition. Previous studies imply that changes in the cancer stem cells can affect the malignant differentiation of the tumor. We found that the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related regulatory pathway is an important target for tumor therapy. In this review, we discuss the transition factor of EMT and 3 specific pathways that affect the EMT of cancer stem cells during tumor development. We conclude that targeting the EMT process of cancer stem cells can be a feasible approach in the treatment of glioma.

RESUMEN

Processing of dark tea varieties, such as Fu brick tea, Liupao tea, Qianliang tea, and Qing brick tea, includes solid-state fermentation involving microorganisms. In this study, we analyzed the major chemical constituents of dark tea extracts and evaluated their modulatory effect on the gastrointestinal function in normal mice, including the improvement of gastrointestinal transit and intestinal microbial, as well as the attenuation of intestinal microbial dysbiosis and intestinal pathological damage, and the adjustment of immune function in antibiotic-treated mice. Substantial differences in major chemical constituents, including total polyphenols, total organic acids, water extract content, 18 free amino acids, gallic acid, and six tea catechins, were observed among Fu brick tea, Qianliang tea, Qing brick tea, and Liupao tea extracts. Extracts from the four dark tea varieties significantly promoted gastrointestinal transit and colonization of beneficial Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and inhibited the growth of harmful Escherichia coli and Enterococcus in normal mice. In addition, Qianliang tea, Qing brick tea, and Liupao tea extracts significantly accelerated the reversal of the ampicillin sodium-induced pathological damage in the ileum, intestinal bacterial dysbiosis (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, E. coli, and Enterococcus), and low immunity.

RESUMEN

Objective: The aim of this research was to explore the hypothesis that acupuncture at the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), a new a new method of acupuncture, would be more efficacious and safe than traditional acupuncture in the treatment of persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR). Materials and Methods: For this study, 120 patients with PAR were randomly assigned to SPG acupuncture, traditional acupuncture (Yingxiang [LI 20], Hegu [LI 4], and Yintang [Ex-HN 3]), or drug treatment (budesonide nasal spray). Efficacy was assessed by using single symptoms, including sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and nasal itch, a total nasal symptoms score (TNSS), and a Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) before treatment, the day treatment ended, and 4-, 8-, 12-weeks later, respectively. Results: Four weeks after treatment ended, the effectiveness rate in the SPG-acupuncture group was superior to that of the traditional-acupuncture group (P = 0.033) but was still lower than that of the drug-treatment group (P = 0.039), with mean effectiveness rates of 69.70%, 44.44%, and 71.43%, respectively. However, these rates gradually decreased in each group during weeks 8 through 16. Moreover, statistically significant improvements in TNSS', and reductions in nasal congestion and sneezing symptoms were observed in the SPG-acupuncture group, compared with those in the traditional-acupuncture group as early as the day treatment ended and this continued throughout the observation period (P < 0.05). However, the improvement did not continue for sneezing, during weeks 8 through weeks 12 after treatment ended. The RQLQ of the SPG-acupuncture group was lower than that of the traditional-acupuncture group at week 12; however, there were no differences at weeks 8 and 16. Conclusions: The data generated by this study confirmed that acupuncture at the SPG alleviated the symptoms of PAR rapidly and safely, especially nasal obstruction, and improved the patients' life quality. These results were worthy of clinical promotion.

RESUMEN

An examination of the endophytic fungus Trichoderma asperellum A-YMD-9-2 obtained from the marine red alga Gracilaria verrucosa led to the isolation of seven new chromanoid norbisabolane derivatives, trichobisabolins I-L (1-4) and trichaspsides C-E (5-7). Their structures and relative configurations were established on the basis of spectroscopic techniques, mainly including 1D/2D NMR and MS, and the absolute configuration of 1 was assigned by X-ray crystallographic analysis using Cu Kα radiation. All of these isolates feature a 1,9-epoxy ring system, and 5-7 represent the second occurrence of norbisabolane aminoglycosides. Compounds 1-7 exhibited potent inhibition of several marine phytoplankton species.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Germline mutations occur in approximately 25% of patients with epithelial ovarian cancers while somatic BRCA mutations are estimated at 5-7%. The objectives of this study were to determine the rate of germline and somatic testing in women with ovarian cancer and to identify disparities in testing at a comprehensive cancer center (CCC) and a safety net hospital (SNH). METHODS: Patients treated for ovarian cancer from 2011 to 2016 were included. Clinicopathologic data were abstracted from the electronic medical records. Logistic regression modeling were performed to calculate odds ratios (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). RESULTS: Out of 367 women, 55.3% completed germline testing; 27.0% received somatic testing. Women at the CCC were more likely to be tested for germline (60.4% vs 38.1%, p ≤ 0.001) and somatic (34.3% vs 2.4%, p ≤ 0.001) mutations than those at the SNH. Patients with Medicare (aOR = 0.51, 95%CI 0.28-0.94, p = 0.032) or Medicaid (aOR = 0.42, 95%CI 0.18-0.99, p = 0.048) were less likely to receive germline testing than those privately insured. Patients with Medicaid were less likely to receive somatic testing (aOR = 0.15, 95%CI 0.04-0.62, p = 0.009) than those privately insured. Women with disease recurrence had a higher likelihood of being tested for germline (OR = 3.64, 95%CI 1.94-6.83, P < 0.001) and somatic (OR = 7.89, 95%CI 3.41-18.23, p < 0.001) mutations. There was no difference in germline or somatic testing by race/ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS: Disparities in both germline and somatic testing exist. Understanding and overcoming barriers to testing may improve cancer-related mortality by allowing for more tailored treatments as well as for improved cascade testing.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore effects of Yougui recipe (see text) and salmon calcitonin acetate in preventing osteolysis surrounding artificial prosthesis. METHODS: Thirty-two SD male rats with weighted (250 +/- 20) g, aged 8 weeks, were randomly divided into four groups: blank group, model group, salmon calcitonin acetate group and Yougui recipe (see text) group, and 8 rats in each group. Blank group did not undergo any process, other 24 rats underwent anesthesia by chloral hydrate, their knee joints were exposed through medial patellar side, drilling from fermoral condyle nest to marrow cavity, high density of polythlene particles were injected into hole, titanium nail were put into, bone wax closed the window, then suturing step by step. After the molding, saline were used to gavaged in blank group and model group, Yougui recipe (see text) for Yougui recipe (see text) group, salmon calcitonin maximus injection for calcitonin group. After 10 weeks' mediation, rats were executed, and arterial blood and bilateral femoral organization were collected to biochemical, imaging morphology, tissue pathology and molecular biology detection. RESULTS: The key gene expression of activiting osteoclast were inhibited in Yougui recipe (see text) group and calcitonin group. The level of OPG, Ca, ALP in Yougui recipe group were higher than calcitonin group (P<0.01); the content of RANKL were lower (P<0.01). There were no significance meaning in RANK, Trap5b, P between two groups. CONCLUSION: Both of Yougui recipe (see text) and calcitonin can slow and treat surrounding osteolysis of artificial joint prosthesis, and Yougui recipe (see text) has better effect in promoting bone formation. The effect of Yougui recipe (see text) in promoting bone formation, inhibiting osteoclasts to provide a new method to treating surrounding osteolysis of artificial joint prosthesis.
