Antimicrobial resistance has silently turned into one of the biggest threats to global health, marking the fall of the Golden age of antibiotics. In the search for antibiotic replacement or enhancement, plant-derived natural compounds have attracted lots of interest. Even though firmly believed, the low-resistance tendency of pathogenic bacteria against plant extracts has been scarcely demonstrated. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activities of diethyl ether extracts from six medicinal plants grown in Viet Nam against Staphylococcus aureus and its variants, which were in vitro adapted to the same extracts. After 30 passages of S. aureus growing under sub-lethal concentrations of plant extracts or antibiotics, the bacteria slowly adapted to the extracts while rapidly resisting the antibiotics. Most of the resulting strains obtained from the adaptation to plant extracts were collaterally sensitive to antibiotics. In contrast, antibiotic-adapted strains showed cross-resistance to both antibiotics and extracts. The findings provided evidence of the low-resistance tendency of S. aureus to antimicrobial plant extracts. It is the first time a collateral antibiotic sensitivity of S. aureus adapted to natural compounds has been observed, suggesting an alternative approach to fight antibiotic resistance.

Mobilizable colloids from reservoir sediment contain nutrients and contaminants, thus may affect water quality once being released. A major obstacle to evaluate the quantity and quality of mobilizable colloids in natural system is the using of appropriate method for colloid extraction from sediment and their separation from dissolved and particulate phases. This work evaluates the role of different extraction methods (agitation, sonication at sediment pH, and sonication at alkaline pH) on the characteristics (mass, size, shape and composition) of water-mobilizable colloids from sediment of Champsanglard dam reservoir (France). Attention has been paid to phosphorus (P), an important element in controlling eutrophication. Recovered colloids were highly affected on both quantity and quality according to the different applied protocols. The less aggressive agitation liberated low-energy water-dispersible colloids without physical damage and with less modification in colloidal chemical composition and shape, whereas sonication released 10-20 times higher colloid quantity but in lower size, due to physically disruption of fragile sediment structure or aggregated/chained colloids. In contrast, alkaline pH intensified colloid release by fortified repulsive forces between colloids and dissolution of organic coat. Concerning phosphorus, competition with hydroxide ions for sorption site or dissolution of phosphate minerals in alkaline pH caused release of dissolved P to solution and decrease of P content in recovered colloids. A special care should be paid to method selection according to the aim of the study and when comparing data from experiments conducted with different colloid extraction methods.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is performed by placing needles or pressure in specific locations on a patient's skin to achieve a therapeutic effect. Although used to treat a variety of disorders, one of the most common applications of acupuncture is to treat chronic pain, especially headache and migraine pain. Migraines are difficult to treat, and pharmacotherapies are often the first line of treatment, although these options have many unwanted side effects, such as exacerbation of headache pain in those with chronic migraine. Many complimentary and integrative therapies are available to treat migraine (including nutraceuticals, yoga, tai chi, and biofeedback), among which acupuncture as a treatment is gaining increasing attention. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of both acupuncture and migraine and of current research investigating the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating migraine and chronic migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a musculoskeletal pain condition that stems from localized, taut regions of skeletal muscle and fascia, termed trigger points. The purpose of this comprehensive review is to provide updated information on prevalence, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities with a focus on interventional modalities in managing MPS. RECENT FINDINGS: Though MPS can present acutely, it frequently presents as a chronic condition, affecting up to 85% of adults during their lifetime. MPS is an often-overlooked component of pain with overarching effects on society, including patient quality of life, physical and social functioning, emotional well-being, energy, and costs on health care. The prevalence of MPS is generally increased among patients with other chronic pain disorders and has been associated with various other conditions such as bladder pain syndrome, endometriosis, and anxiety. MPS is poorly understood and remains a challenging condition to treat. Non-pharmacologic treatment modalities such as acupuncture, massage, transcutaneous electrical stimulation, and interferential current therapy may offer relief to some patients with MPS. Additional studies are warranted to get a better understanding of managing myofascial pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cannabis is a naturally occurring plant that is composed of over sixty phytocannabinoids, of which cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently identified as having therapeutic potential. RECENT FINDINGS: Although not clearly understood in its mechanism of action, CBD contains potent anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperalgesia, and analgesic qualities now being further analyzed for its use in the treatment of a plethora of diseases. Related to its large safety profile and lack of psychoactive effects typically associated with cannabis and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is being used more frequently for self-treatment of chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. With the help of broad marketing, CBD is being used by numerous people, including pregnant women who use CBD as an anti-emetic. Since marijuana is legalized in many states in the USA, the use of CBD has increased not only in the general population but also in specific groups such as pregnant women with chronic pain. Despite CBD's accessibility, there are limited studies showing its safety during pregnancy. While the use of cannabis has been well explored in terms of the effects on pregnancy, the use of CBD during pregnancy thus far has limited literature. The goal of this investigation is to impart the current understanding of CBD and its effects of pregnancy.

Current conventional endoscopes have restricted the accuracy of treatment delivery and monitoring. Over the past decade, there have been major developments in nanotechnology and light triggered therapy, potentially allowing a better detection of challenging lesions and targeted treatment of malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract. Theranostics is a developing form of personalized medicine because it combines diagnosis and targeted treatment delivered in one step using advances in nanotechnology. This review describes the light-triggered therapies (including photodynamic, photothermal, and photoimmunotherapies), nanotechnological advances with nanopowder, nanostent, nanogels, and nanoparticles, enhancements brought to endoscopic ultrasound, in addition to experimental endoscopic techniques, combining both enhanced diagnoses and therapies, including a developed prototype of a "smart" multifunctional endoscope for localized colorectal cancer, near-infrared laser endoscope targeting the gastrointestinal stromal tumors, the concept of endocapsule for obscure gastrointestinal bleed, and a proof-of-concept therapeutic capsule using ultrasound-mediated targeted drug delivery. Hence, the following term has been proposed encompassing these technologies: "Theranostic gastrointestinal endoscopy." Future efforts for integration of these technologies into clinical practice would be directed toward translational and clinical trials translating into a more personalized and interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, shorter procedural time, higher precision, higher cost-effectiveness, and less need for repetitive procedures.

PURPOSE: The number of patients with depressive disordered globally increased and affects people of all ages and countries and has a significant and negative impact on the quality of life (QoL). Depression if left untreated may lead to severe consequences. However, there are several types of effective treatments, but often patients need support from health staff to find suitable treatments. This study aims to examine the global trend of the publications as well as the development of interventions for depressing treatment. METHODS: We download and analyzed 15,976 scientific research from the Web of Science from 1990 to 2018. A text mining based on Latent Dirichlet and terms' co-occurrence in titles and abstracts to identify hidden research topics and research landscapes. RESULTS: We found that the number of papers related to non-pharmacological treatment (such as cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, or family and social support) to improve the QoL of patients with depression has increased. The number of papers on this serious health issue in low-middle income countries (LMICs) was not as high as in high-income countries (HICs). CONCLUSION: It is necessary to increase support of the treatment of depression in LMICs as well as applied non-pharmacological interventions to patients with depression.

Social media can potentially serve as a platform to coordinate medical care among fragmented health sectors. This paper describes procedures of using social media to enhance antiretroviral therapy (ART) and methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) providers' virtual network for integrated service for HIV-positive people who inject drugs (PWID) in Vietnam. A total of 88 ART and MMT treatment providers participated in person group sessions followed by online virtual support to improve service integration. In-person reunions were held to reinforce Facebook participation and network activities. Content analysis was used to identify keywords and topic categories of the online information exchange. Both MMT and ART providers were actively engaged in online communications. Referral and treatment adherence were the two most frequently discussed topic areas by both the MMT and ART providers. Frequent cross-agency connections were observed. Online provider networks and communities could be built and useful to support treatment providers to improve service integration.

The ability to interrogate and track single cells over time in a high-throughput format would provide critical information for fundamental biological understanding of processes and for various applications, including drug screening and toxicology. We have developed an ultrarapid and simple method to create single-cell wells of controllable diameter and depth with commodity shrink-wrap film and tape. Using a programmable CO(2) laser, we cut hole arrays into the tape. The tape then serves as a shadow mask to selectively etch wells into commodity shrink-wrap film by O(2) plasma. When the shrink-wrap film retracts upon briefly heating, high-aspect plastic microwell arrays with diameters down to 20 µm are readily achieved. We calibrated the loading procedure with fluorescent microbeads. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of the wells by loading fluorescently labeled single human embryonic stem cells into the wells.
