RESUMEN

The effects of postharvest melatonin (MT) treatment on cuticular wax and cell wall metabolism in blueberry fruit (Vaccinium spp.) were evaluated. The results revealed that MT treatment maintained the cuticular wax rod-like structure and delayed wax degradation. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis results revealed that MT application changed the cuticular wax composition in blueberries, and 25 metabolic components were screened. The metabolic regulation of wax quality in blueberry fruit may therefore be influenced by MT. Additionally, MT slowed down pectin and cellulose degradation by reducing the activities of cell wall degrading enzymes like pectin methyl esterase polygalacturonase, ß-galactosidase, and cellulose in the later stages of storage. It also downregulated the transcriptional expression of related genes like VcPE, VcPG, VcBG6, and VcGAL1. Thus, MT prevented softening and senescence by postponing the degradation of the cell wall in postharvest blueberry fruit.

RESUMEN

Fresh mushrooms (Flammulina velutipes) are very perishable and easily brown; also they undergo postharvest loss of nutritive constituents. In this study, cinnamaldehyde (CA) emulsion was prepared by using soybean phospholipids (SP) as emulsifier and pullulan (Pul) as stabilizer. The effect of emulsion on the quality of mushroom during storage was also studied. The experimental results indicated that the emulsion obtained by adding 6 % pullulan was found to the most uniform and stable, which is beneficial to its application. Emulsion coating maintained the storage quality of Flammulina velutipes. The incorporation of CA emulsion into the coating system showed a positive effect on inhibiting the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, resulting from improving the effectiveness of delaying active free radical scavenging enzymes. The shelf life of mushrooms coated with emulsion was significantly prolonged, which indicates its potential application in food preservation.

RESUMEN

Zizania latifolia is an aquatic and medicinal plant with a long history of development in China and the East Asian region. The smut fungus "Ustilago esculenta" parasitizes Z. latifolia and induces culm expansion to form a vegetable named Jiaobai, which has a unique taste and nutritional attributes. However, the postharvest quality of water bamboo shoots is still a big challenge for farmers and merchants. This paper traced the origin, development process, and morphological characteristics of Z. latifolia. Subsequently, the compilation of the primary nutrients and bioactive substances are presented in context to their effects on ecology a postharvest storage and preservation methods. Furthermore, the industrial, environmental, and material science applications of Z. latifolia in the fields of industry were discussed. Finally, the primary objective of the review proposes future directions for research to support the development of Z. latifolia industry and aid in maximizing its value. To sum up, Z. latifolia, aside from its potential as material it can be utilized to make different productions and improve the existing applications. This paper provides an emerging strategy for researchers undertaking Z. latifolia.

RESUMEN

In this research, Pickering emulsion stabilized by taro starch nanoparticles was successfully prepared, and the potential application of encapsulating tea polyphenols was investigated. The nanoparticle size (about 460 nm) and contact angle (81.5°) of taro starch indicate that it is suitable for adsorbing on the oil-water interface and forming a dense interfacial layer. Emulsion stability at different particle concentrations, oil-water ratios, and sodium chloride concentrations has been systematically studied. By considering the particle size, zeta potential, and stability index of Pickering emulsion, it is considered that the emulsion has the best stability when the particle concentration is 7% and the oil fraction is 0.5. Low concentration of salt ions (0.04 mM NaCl) will cause a slight flocculation to improve the stability, but adding high concentration of salt will make emulsion break. In addition, we found that this Pickering emulsion could encapsulate the tea polyphenols greatly with a retention rate of up to 67%. The findings may have great significance for the design and fabrication of native starch particle stabilized emulsion.

RESUMEN

Based on the hydrogen bonding ability of polysaccharides and phospholipids and steric hindrance, nanoliposomes (LPs), pectin-coated resveratrol liposomes (LMP-LPs and HMP-LPs) with different esterification degrees (DE = 30%, 70%) were prepared. The entrapment efficiency was 78 ±â€¯5%. The addition of pectin with different degree of esterification (DE = 0%, 30%, 70%) increased the particle size of liposomes from 102 nm to 122 nm and 140 nm and negative charge change from -13.63 mV to -20.96 mV and -30.11 mV respectively. This is mainly due to the adsorption of pectin on the liposome surface. Some environmental factors such as pH, ionic strength and temperature have a significant effect on the appearance, particle size and leakage rate of liposomes. Experiments have shown that the leakage rate of low-methoxy pectin-coated liposomes resveratrol is lower, and this work provides useful information on the use of low-methoxy pectin for controlling food release.

RESUMEN

Edible packaging films using polymer for food preservation have been developed for a long time. In this study, the effects of different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, w/v) of tea polyphenols incorporated into pullulan-Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (Pul-CMC) solutions on electrospun nanofiber films were evaluated. The fiber size distribution was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The morphological features of nanofibers were modulated through adjusting process parameters (e.g. concentration of polymer solution, applied voltage and feeding rate). Increasing the applied voltage from 19 to 21kV and the feed rate from 0.36 to 0.6mL/h leads to a reduction in mean fiber diameter. Fruit packaging potential was evaluated using strawberry. The pullulan-CMC-TP nanofibers significantly decreased weight loss and maintained the firmness of the strawberries, and improved the quality of the fruit during storage. The findings demonstrate a facile packaging route to improve food sustainability and reduce waste.

RESUMEN

A multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled superiority trial with 18 months of follow-up was conducted to investigate whether oral zinc supplementation could further promote spermatogenesis in males with isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) receiving sequential purified urinary follicular-stimulating hormone/human chorionic gonadotropin (uFSH/hCG) replacement. Sixty-seven Chinese male IHH patients were recruited from the Departments of Endocrinology in eight tertiary hospitals and randomly allocated into the sequential uFSH/hCG group (Group A, n = 34) or the sequential uFSH plus zinc supplementation group (Group B, n = 33). In Group A, patients received sequential uFSH (75 U, three times a week every other 3 months) and hCG (2000 U, twice a week) treatments. In Group B, patients received oral zinc supplementation (40 mg day-1 ) in addition to the sequential uFSH/hCG treatment given to patients in Group A. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with a sperm concentration ≥1.0 × 106 ml-1 during the 18 months. The comparison of efficacy between Groups A and B was analyzed. Nineteen of 34 (55.9%) patients receiving sequential uFSH/hCG and 20 of 33 (60.6%) patients receiving sequential uFSH/hCG plus zinc supplementation achieved sperm concentrations ≥1.0 × 106 ml-1 by intention to treat analyses. No differences between Group A and Group B were observed as far as the efficacy of inducing spermatogenesis (P = 0.69). We concluded that the sequential uFSH/hCG plus zinc supplementation regimen had a similar efficacy to the sequential uFSH/hCG treatment alone. The additional improvement of 40 mg day-1 oral zinc supplementation on spermatogenesis and masculinization in male IHH patients is very subtle.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Corydalis bungeana Turcz. (CB; family: Corydalis DC.) is an anti-inflammatory medicinal herb used widely in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for upper respiratory tract infection, etc., but its anti-inflammatory active molecules are unknown. This study was designed to screen for the anti-inflammatory components from CB based on macrophage binding combined with HPLC. METHODS: Xylene-induced ear edema in mouse and carrageenan-induced hind-paw edema in rats were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of CB. The macrophage binding with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and HPLC-MS were established to screen the potential active compounds. ELISA kits were performed to measure the levels of IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α and NO in RAW 264.7 macrophages culture media. RESULTS: The alkaloid extract of CB could inhibit significantly xylene-induced ear edema in mouse and carrageenan-induced hind-paw edema in rats. Two components binded to RAW 264.7 cell were identified as 12-hydroxycorynoline and corynoline. Bioassays demonstrated that these two compounds significantly inhibited LPS-induced IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α and NO levels. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that corynoline and 12-hydroxycorynoline contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects of the alkaloid extract of CB. Our findings suggest that these two compounds can be used as candidate for anti-inflammatory drugs.

RESUMEN

Abstract: Fertilization is an effective management measure for recovery of degraded grasslands. To better understand the effects of fertilization on community structure and productivity of lightly and severely degraded alpine meadows, we conducted a fertilization experiment in northern Tibet since 2008. The treatments were addition of nitrogen (N) alone (50 kg N x hm(-2) x a(-1), LN; 100 kg N x hm(-2) x a(-1), HN) or addition of both phosphorus (P) and N (50 kg N x hm(-2) x a(-1) +50 kg P x hm(-2) x a(-1), LN+P; 100 kg N x hm(-2) x a(-1) +50 kg P x hm(-2) x a(-1), HN+P) in each of the two types of degraded alpine meadows. N addition alone significantly affected plant community coverage or productivity in neither the slightly nor the severely degraded alpine meadow, while addition of both N and P significantly increased plant community coverage, aboveground and below- ground biomass of the alpine meadows. This suggested that productivity of this alpine meadow is co-limited by N and P. HN and HN+P significantly decreased species richness and evenness in the lightly degraded grassland, indicating that HN was not beneficial for the lightly degraded grassland to maintain species diversity and community stability. N addition significantly reduced the root to shoot ratio in the severely degraded meadow. In the lightly degraded meadow, N addition alone, especially with a high amount (HN) , enhanced the importance values (IV) and biomass of grasses, while fertilization with both N and P increased those of sedges. In the severely degraded meadow, fertilization had little effect on IV of grasses or sedges, but improved biomass of forbs. The results suggested that LN+P could be employed in recovery of lightly degraded alpine meadows, but other management measures such as fencing and reseeding may be needed for recovery of severely degraded alpine meadows.

RESUMEN

A passive optical diode effect would be useful for on-chip optical information processing but has been difficult to achieve. Using a method based on optical nonlinearity, we demonstrate a forward-backward transmission ratio of up to 28 decibels within telecommunication wavelengths. Our device, which uses two silicon rings 5 micrometers in radius, is passive yet maintains optical nonreciprocity for a broad range of input power levels, and it performs equally well even if the backward input power is higher than the forward input. The silicon optical diode is ultracompact and is compatible with current complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processing.
