Since numerous natural components in Eucommia ulmoides belong to phytoestrogen, its effect on hens production deserve more attention. To investigate the potential of E. ulmoides extract used as a feed additive, laying performance, egg quality, yolk cholesterol, yolk fatty acids, yolk fatty, yolk volatile components, albumen amino acids, plasma biochemical parameters, intestinal histology, and gut microbiota of hens (n = 120) were determined between basal diet (A) and dietary supplementation low (B), middle (C), and high (D) level E. ulmoides extract for 11 wk. When compared to A group, 2 percentage points elevation in laying rate was observed of D group. Significant up-regulation of immunoglobulin indexes and down-regulation of lipid related indexes in D group were also found if comparison with A group, suggesting that supplementation E. ulmoides extract at a relative high content benefited in immunity enhancing and blood-fat depressing. Meanwhile, obvious variation in albumen amino acids and yolk volatile compounds were inspected as dietary supplementation E. ulmoides extract, especially in D group, implied that the flavor of egg would change under high-level E. ulmoides extract treatment. Besides, villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio of duodenum, jejunum, and ileum in D group were also significantly higher than that of in A group, indicating high-level E. ulmoides extract contributed to nutrient adsorption via intestinal histology changing. Moreover, the richness, diversity, and composition of gut microbiota in D group also significantly altered with a comparison of A group. These variation caused gut microbiota in D group major enriched in the KEGG pathway of insulin signing pathway, systemic lupus erythematosus, and bacterial invasion of epithelial cells, which were conducive to egg production elevation via facilitating nutrient adsorption, inflammation relieving, blood lipid amelioration, and insulin resistance alleviation. These results indicated that dietary supplementation E. ulmoides extract at high content could serve as a feed additive in the hens industry.

To investigate the potential of Ampelopsis grossedentata extract used as a feed additive, laying performance, egg quality, yolk cholesterol, plasma biochemical parameters, intestinal histology, and gut microbiota of hens (n = 60) were determined between basal diet (CK) and dietary supplementation with A. grossedentata extract (RT) for 11 weeks. The laying rate in RT group was 6.3 percentage points higher than in CK group together with feed conversion rate decreasing. Significant upregulation of immunoglobulin indexes and downregulation of lipid-related indexes in RT group were also found in comparison with CK group, suggesting that dietary supplementation with A. grossedentata extract benefited in immunity enhancing and blood-fat depressing. Meanwhile, the villus height in duodenum and villus height to crypt depth ratio in duodenum and jejunum of RT group were significantly higher than that of CK group, indicating that dietary supplementation with A. grossedentata extract facilitated nutrient adsorption via intestinal histology changing. Moreover, the richness, diversity, and composition of gut microbiota in RT group significantly altered with a comparison of CK group, including beneficial bacterium and pathogenic bacterium, revealing that dietary supplementation with A. grossedentata extract could modify gut microbiota communities to affect intestinal adsorption and pathogen invasion. In addition, the lipid metabolism-related insulin signing pathway was significantly enriched by gut microbiota in RT group, which were conducive to egg production elevation via facilitating blood lipid amelioration and insulin resistance alleviation. These results provided a basis for A. grossedentata extract served as a feed additive in the hen industry.

It is unclear which prognostic factor such as pathological features and gene mutation are majorly relevant for stage III disease and whether they aid in determining patients who will be benefit from postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. The expression of astrocyte-elevated gene-1 (AEG-1), thymidylate synthase (TS), excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was examined to investigate their role in adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with resectable stage III colorectal cancer (CRC). A significant positive correlation was observed between AEG-1, TS, ERCC1, EGFR, and VEGF gene expression levels in CRC cell lines, and low AEG-1 and TS expression were highly sensitive to 5-fluorouracil treatment. Our results showed that AEG-1 expression was high in T4 and caused CRC recurrence or metastasis. Patients with T4, high AEG-1, TS and VEGF expression had a significantly short disease-free survival and overall survival. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, high AEG-1 expression could be an independent prognostic factor indicating poor survival in patients with resectable stage III CRC treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. In conclusion, AEG-1 expression and tumor grade are potential prognostic factors for recurrence and survival in patients with stage III CRC receiving adjuvant fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and complications. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in AF, with the heart regulated by both extrinsic and intrinsic properties. In the extrinsic ANS, the sympathetic fibers are derived from the major paravertebral ganglia, especially the stellate ganglion (SG), which is a source of cardiac sympathetic innervation since it connects with multiple intrathoracic nerves and structures. The major intrinsic ANS is a network of axons and ganglionated plexi that contains a variety of sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons, which communicate with the extrinsic ANS. Simultaneous sympathovagal activation contributes to the development of AF because it increases calcium entry and shortens the atrial action potential duration. In animal and human studies, neuromodulation methods such as electrical stimulation and renal denervation have indicated potential benefits in controlling AF in patients as they cause SG remodeling and reduce sympathetic outflow. This review focuses on the neural mechanisms relevant to AF and the recent developments of neuromodulation methods for AF control.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous nerve stimulation (ScNS) remodels the stellate ganglion and reduces stellate ganglion nerve activity (SGNA) in dogs. Acute myocardial infarction (MI) increases SGNA through nerve sprouting. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that ScNS remodels the stellate ganglion and reduces SGNA in ambulatory dogs with acute MI. METHODS: In the experimental group, a radio transmitter was implanted during the first sterile surgery to record nerve activity and an electrocardiogram, followed by a second sterile surgery to create MI. Dogs then underwent ScNS for 2 months. The average SGNA (aSGNA) was compared with that in a historical control group (n = 9), with acute MI monitored for 2 months without ScNS. RESULTS: In the experimental group, the baseline aSGNA and heart rate were 4.08±0.35 µV and 98±12 beats/min, respectively. They increased within 1 week after MI to 6.91±1.91 µV (P=.007) and 107±10 beats/min (P=.028), respectively. ScNS reduced aSGNA to 3.46±0.44 µV (P<.039) and 2.14±0.50 µV (P<.001) at 4 and 8 weeks, respectively, after MI. In comparison, aSGNA at 4 and 8 weeks in dogs with MI but no ScNS was 8.26±6.31 µV (P=.005) and 10.82±7.86 µV (P=0002), respectively. Immunostaining showed confluent areas of remodeling in bilateral stellate ganglia and a high percentage of tyrosine hydroxylase-negative ganglion cells. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling was positive in 26.61%±11.54% of ganglion cells in the left stellate ganglion and 15.94%±3.62% of ganglion cells in the right stellate ganglion. CONCLUSION: ScNS remodels the stellate ganglion, reduces SGNA, and suppresses cardiac nerve sprouting after acute MI.

Discovering drug candidates for the modulation of metastasis is of great importance in inhibiting oral cancer malignancy. Although most pomegranate extract applications aim at the antiproliferation of cancer cells, its antimetastatic effects remain unclear, especially for oral cancer cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the change of two main metastasis characters, migration and invasion of oral cancer cells. Further, we want to explore the molecular mechanisms of action of pomegranate extract (POMx) at low cytotoxic concentration. We found that POMx ranged from 0 to 50 µg/mL showing low cytotoxicity to oral cancer cells. In the case of oral cancer HSC-3 and Ca9-22 cells, POMx inhibits wound healing migration, transwell migration, and matrix gel invasion. Mechanistically, POMx downregulates matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 activities and expressions as well as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) signaling. POMx upregulates extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2), but not c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 expression. Addition of ERK1/2 inhibitor (PD98059) significantly recovered the POMx-suppressed transwell migration and MMP-2/-9 activities in HSC-3 cells. Taken together, these findings suggest to further test low cytotoxic concentrations of POMx as a potential antimetastatic therapy against oral cancer cells.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of cistanche on sevoflurane-induced aged cognitive dysfunction rat model. Aged (24 months) male SD rats were randomly assigned to four groups: control group, sevoflurane group, control + cistanche and sevoflurane + cistanche group. Subsequently, inflammatory cytokine levels were measured by ELISA, and the cognitive dysfunction of rats was evaluated by water maze test, open-field test and the fear conditioning test. Three days following anaesthesia, the rats were killed and hippocampus was harvested for the analysis of relative biomolecules. The oxidative stress level was indicated as nitrite and MDA concentration, along with the SOD and CAT activity. Finally, PPAR-γ antagonist was used to explore the mechanism of cistanche in vivo. The results showed that after inhaling the sevoflurane, 24- but not 3-month-old male SD rats developed obvious cognitive impairments in the behaviour test 3 days after anaesthesia. Intraperitoneal injection of cistanche at the dose of 50 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days before anaesthesia alleviated the sevoflurane-induced elevation of neuroinflammation levels and significantly attenuated the hippocampus-dependent memory impairments in 24-month-old rats. Cistanche also reduced the oxidative stress by decreasing nitrite and MDA while increasing the SOD and CAT activity. Moreover, such treatment also inhibited the activation of microglia. In addition, we demonstrated that PPAR-γ inhibition conversely alleviated cistanche-induced protective effect. Taken together, we demonstrated that cistanche can exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis and anti-activation of microglia effects on the development of sevoflurane-induced cognitive dysfunction by activating PPAR-γ signalling.

Olive waste was used as a sustainable resource because it contained a variety of valuable compounds. The polyphenols active fraction from enrichment by microporous resin and extraction with ethyl acetate were analysed by different chromatographic methods. A total of 14 polyphenolic compounds were isolated and identified by structure elucidation. Based on the above obtained compounds, tyrosol was selected as a characteristic polyphenol and participated in transesterification reaction to synthesise ß-ketoester using Yb(OTf)3. Then the Biginelli reaction with benzaldehyde, urea and ketoester (1:1.2:1.2) was performed at 90 °C for 3.0 h under the acidic condition. In addition, the ß-ketoester prepared using tyrosol with benzyl had a greater inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase and α-amylase, and the inhibition of enzyme activity for 3, 4-dihydropyrimidinone derivatives prepared using abovementioned ß-ketoester was improved significantly. Meanwhile, fluorine-containing dihydropyrimidinone derivatives were considerable inhibitors for both enzymes.

This study was conducted to compare the effects of Eucommia ulmoides leaves (EL) in different forms (EL extract, fermented EL, and EL powder) with antibiotics on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and the microbiota composition and diversity of weanling piglets. Compared to the control group, the antibiotics and EL extract significantly increased the average daily gain and decreased the feed: gain ratio as well as the diarrhea rate (P < 0.05). The EL extract significantly decreased the crypt depth and increased the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (P < 0.05), while the fermented EL group did the opposite (P < 0.05). The crypt depth in the antibiotics group was of similar value to the EL extract group, and was lower than the fermented EL and EL powder groups (P < 0.05). Compared to the control and antibiotics groups, the jejunul claudin-3 mRNA expression and the concentrations of total VFA, Chao 1, and ACE were significantly augmented in the EL extract group of piglets (P < 0.05). The EL extract groups also showed elevated Shannon (P < 0.05) and Simpson (P = 0.07) values relative to the control and antibiotics groups. At the phylum level, the EL extract group exhibited a reduced abundance of Bacteroidetes and an enhanced abundance of Firmicutes. At the genus level, the abundance of Prevotella was augmented in the EL extract group. Moreover, compared with the antibiotic group, the acetate concentration was enhanced in the EL extract and fermented EL groups. Overall, dietary supplementation with the EL extract, but not the fermented EL or EL powder, improved growth performance, jejunul morphology and function, as well as changed colonic microbial composition and diversity, which might be an alternative to confer protection against weanling stress in weanling piglets.

Introduction: The genus Nepenthes of the pitcher plants contains several natural and hybrid species that are commonly used in herbal medicine in several countries, but its possible use in cancer applications remains unknown as yet. Methods: In this study, we investigated the antioral cancer properties using ethyl acetate extracts of the Nepenthes hybrid (Nepenthes ventricosa x sibuyanensis), namely EANS. The bioactivity was detected by a MTS-based cell proliferation assay and flow cytometric or Western blot analysis for apoptosis, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. Results: Treatment for 24 hrs of EANS inhibited all three types of oral cancer cells that were tested (Ca9-22, CAL 27, and SCC9), with just a small difference to normal oral cells (HGF-1). This antiproliferation was inhibited by pretreatments with the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and the apoptosis inhibitor (Z-VAD). EANS treatment increased the subG1 population and it also dose- and time-dependently induced annexin V- and pancaspase-detected apoptosis as well as cleaved caspases 3 and 9 overexpressions in the oral cancer cells (Ca9-22). After EANS treatment of Ca9-22 cells, intracellular ROS and mitochondrial superoxide (MitoSOX) were overexpressed and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was disrupted. Moreover, DNA damages such as γH2AX and 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) were increased after EANS treatment to Ca9-22 cells. The EANS-induced effects (namely, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and DNA damage) were suppressed by ROS scavenger. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that EANS inhibits ROS-mediated proliferation against oral cancer cells.

Nepenthes plants are regarded as a kind of Traditional Chinese Medicine for several diseases but its anticancer activity remain unclear. The subject of this study is to evaluate the antiproliferation effects on oral cancer cells by Nepenthes plants using ethyl acetate extract of Nepenthes adrianii x clipeata (EANA). Cell viability was detected using MTS assay. Its detailed mechanisms including cell cycle, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and DNA damage were explored by flow cytometry or western blotting. For 24 hours EANA treatment, five kinds of oral cancer cells (CAL 27, Ca9-22, OECM-1, HSC-3, and SCC9) show IC50 values of cell viability ranging from 8 to 17 µg/mL but the viability of normal oral cells (HGF-1) remains over 80%. Subsequently, CAL 27 and Ca9-22 cells with high sensitivity to EANA were chosen to investigate the detailed mechanism. EANA displays the time course and concentration effects for inducing apoptosis based on flow cytometry (subG1 and annexin V analyses) and western blotting [cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (c-PARP)]. Oxidative stress and DNA damage were induced by EANA treatments in oral cancer cells through reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential disruption, mitochondrial superoxide, and γH2AX. All these changes of EANA treatments in oral cancer cells were reverted by the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine pretreatment. Therefore, EANA induces preferential killing, apoptosis, and DNA damage against oral cancer cells through oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous nerve stimulation (ScNS) damages the stellate ganglion and improves rhythm control of atrial fibrillation (AF) in ambulatory dogs. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that thoracic ScNS can improve rate control in persistent AF. METHODS: We created persistent AF in 13 dogs and randomly assigned them to ScNS (n = 6) and sham control (n = 7) groups. 18F-2-Fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging of the brain stem was performed at baseline and at the end of the study. RESULTS: The average stellate ganglion nerve activity reduced from 4.00 ± 1.68 µV after the induction of persistent AF to 1.72 ± 0.42 µV (P = .032) after ScNS. In contrast, the average stellate ganglion nerve activity increased from 3.01 ± 1.26 µV during AF to 5.52 ± 2.69 µV after sham stimulation (P = .023). The mean ventricular rate during persistent AF reduced from 149 ± 36 to 84 ± 16 beats/min (P = .011) in the ScNS group, but no changes were observed in the sham control group. The left ventricular ejection fraction remained unchanged in the ScNS group but reduced significantly in the sham control group. Immunostaining showed damaged ganglion cells in bilateral stellate ganglia and increased brain stem glial cell reaction in the ScNS group but not in the control group. The 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose uptake in the pons and medulla was significantly (P = .011) higher in the ScNS group than the sham control group at the end of the study. CONCLUSION: Thoracic ScNS causes neural remodeling in the brain stem and stellate ganglia, controls the ventricular rate, and preserves the left ventricular ejection fraction in ambulatory dogs with persistent AF.

RESUMEN

A valid diet quality assessment scale has not been investigated in hemodialysis patients. We aimed to adapt and validate the alternative healthy eating index in hemodialysis patients (AHEI-HD), and investigate its associations with all-cause mortality. A prospective study was conducted on 370 hemodialysis patients from seven hospital-based dialysis centers. Dietary data (using three independent 24-hour dietary records), clinical and laboratory parameters were collected. The construct and criterion validity of original AHEI-2010 with 11 items and the AHEI-HD with 16 items were examined. Both scales showed reasonable item-scale correlations and satisfactory discriminant validity. The AHEI-HD demonstrated a weaker correlation with energy intake compared with AHEI-2010. Principle component analysis yielded the plateau scree plot line in AHEI-HD but not in AHEI-2010. In comparison with patients in lowest diet quality (tertile 1), those in highest diet quality (tertile 3) had significantly lower risk for death, with a hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of HR: 0.40; 95%CI: 0.18 - 0.90; p = 0.028, as measured by AHEI-2010, and HR: 0.37; 95%CI: 0.17-0.82; p = 0.014 as measured by AHEI-HD, respectively. In conclusion, AHEI-HD was shown to have greater advantages than AHEI-2010. AHEI-HD was suggested for assessments of diet quality in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: High output subcutaneous nerve stimulation (ScNS) remodels the stellate ganglia and suppresses cardiac arrhythmia. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that long duration low output ScNS causes cardiac nerve sprouting and increases plasma norepinephrine concentration and the duration of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT) in ambulatory dogs. METHODS: We prospectively randomized 22 dogs (11 males and 11 females) into 5 different output groups for 2 months of ScNS: 0 mA (sham) (n = 6), 0.25 mA (n = 4), 1.5 mA (n = 4), 2.5 mA (n = 4), and 3.5 mA (n = 4). RESULTS: As compared with baseline, the changes in the durations of PAT episodes per 48 hours were significantly different among different groups (sham, -5.0 ± 9.5 seconds; 0.25 mA, 95.5 ± 71.0 seconds; 1.5 mA, -99.3 ± 39.6 seconds; 2.5 mA, -155.3 ± 87.8 seconds; and 3.5 mA, -76.3 ± 44.8 seconds; P < .001). The 3.5 mA group had a greater reduction in sinus heart rate than did the sham group (-29.8 ± 15.0 beats/min vs -14.5 ± 3.0 beats/min; P = .038). Immunohistochemical studies showed that the 0.25 mA group had a significantly increased while 2.5 mA and 3.5 mA stimulation had significantly reduced growth-associated protein 43 nerve densities in both atria and ventricles. The plasma norepinephrine concentrations in the 0.25 mA group was 5063.0 ± 4366.0 pg/mL, which was significantly higher than that in the other groups of dogs (739.3 ± 946.3; P = .009). There were no significant differences in the effects of simulation between males and females. CONCLUSION: In ambulatory dogs, low output ScNS causes cardiac nerve sprouting and increases plasma norepinephrine concentration and the duration of PAT episodes while high output ScNS is antiarrhythmic.

We report the clinical characteristics, treatments and outcomes of 4 rare cases of mixed amanita fuliginea and amanita rimosa poisoning with rhabdomyolysis, and review the research progress in the intoxication mechanism and treatment. The latent time of amanita poisoning, defined as the period from the ingestion of poisonous mushroom to the onset of gastrointestinal symptoms, was about 8 days, and the severity of poisoning was associated with the amount of mushroom ingested. All the 4 patients developed multiple organ dysfunctions within 3 to 4 days after mushroom ingestion, predominantly in the liver, kidney and central nervous system accompanied with acute gastrointestinal injury and rhabdomyolysis. The treatment measures included persistent hemofiltration and intermittent hemoperfusion once daily for 5-7 days, and plasma exchange was administered in 2 cases for 1 or 2 times. High-dose vitamin C, glucose and corticosteroid were also given to the patients. After the treatments, two patients were cured and the other two died due to an excess intake of poisonous mushroom and lack of early preemptive therapies. Early emetic, gastric lavage, catharsis, fluid infusion and diuresis are critical to interrupt the enterohepatic circulation of amanita phalloides toxins and prevent the development of multiple organ dysfunction. Enhanced hemofiltration and sequential plasma therapy might effectively eliminate toxin from the blood to protect against further organ damages.

The present work evaluated the feasibility of different pluronics (F127, F87 and P85) utilized as modifiers to improve the stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin liposomes (cur-Lps). Pluronics modified curcumin liposomes (cur-pluronic-Lps) were prepared by thin film evaporation combined with dynamic high pressure microfluidization. The particle size and polydispersity index of cur-pluronic-Lps was significantly lower than cur-Lps. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed that curcumin was loaded in liposomes successfully and X-ray diffraction suggested that curcumin in the liposomes was in an amorphous state. In vitro release studies demonstrated that 73.4%, 63.9%, 66.7% and 58.9% curcumin released from cur-Lps, cur-F127-Lps, cur-F87-Lps and cur-P85-Lps, respectively. Compared with cur-Lps, cur-pluronic-Lps showed a slower release rate and lower cumulative release percentage for curcumin. Non-Fickian transport was the main release mechanism for cur-Lps, cur-F127-Lps and cur-F87-Lps, and typically the first-order model fitted cur-P85-Lps release. Stability studies (exposure to solutions of different pH and heat treatment) indicated that pluronics modification could enhance their pH stability and thermal stability. In vitro simulated gastrointestinal tract studies suggested that pluronics modification could significantly improve the absorption of cur-Lps. Bioaccessibility of curcumin liposomes increased in the following order: cur-Lps < cur-F87-Lps < cur-P85-Lps < cur-F127-Lps. These results may guide the potential application of pluronics modified liposomes as carriers of curcumin in nutraceutical and functional foods.

BACKGROUND: Stellate ganglion nerve activity (SGNA) precedes paroxysmal atrial tachyarrhythmia (PAT) episodes in dogs with intermittent rapid left atrial (LA) pacing. The left dorsal branch of the thoracic nerve (LDTN) contains sympathetic nerves originating from the stellate ganglia. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that high-frequency electrical stimulation of the LDTN can cause stellate ganglia damage and suppress PATs. METHODS: We performed long-term LDTN stimulation in 6 dogs with and 2 dogs without intermittent rapid LA pacing while monitoring SGNA. RESULTS: LDTN stimulation reduced average SGNA from 4.36 µV (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.10-4.62 µV) at baseline to 3.22 µV (95% CI 3.04-3.40 µV) after 2 weeks (P = .028) and completely suppressed all PAT episodes in all dogs studied. Tyrosine hydroxylase staining showed large damaged regions in both stellate ganglia, with increased percentages of tyrosine hydroxylase-negative cells. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay showed that 23.36% (95% CI 18.74%-27.98%) of ganglion cells in the left stellate ganglia and 11.15% (95% CI 9.34%-12.96%) ganglion cells in the right stellate ganglia were positive, indicating extensive cell death. A reduction of both SGNA and heart rate was also observed in dogs with LDTN stimulation but without rapid LA pacing. Histological studies in the 2 dogs without intermittent rapid LA pacing confirmed the presence of extensive stellate ganglia damage, along with a high percentage of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling-positive cells. CONCLUSION: LDTN stimulation damages both left and right stellate ganglia, reduces left SGNA, and is antiarrhythmic in this canine model of PAT.

The alkaline solubilization of excess mixed sludge was investigated and subsequently the released phosphorus was recovered as magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP). Considerable and rapid release of glycogen and protein was encountered after alkaline addition into the sludge. Only 45.0% of sludge cells were destructed after 240 min treatment in R1 while the corresponding ratio was 96.1% in R3 according to the release of DNA. Non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) in the alkaline treated sludge decreased due to the dissolution of Al(OH)3 and AlPO4, which was the dominant reason for phosphorus release. Soluble orthophosphate (SOP) in the supernatant of alkaline treated sludge could be recovered quickly with the recovery efficiency of 84.6% within 5 min and about 53-55% of P participated in MAP reaction, producing large amounts of acicular crystals.

BACKGROUND: Reducing sympathetic efferent outflow from the stellate ganglia (SG) may be antiarrhythmic. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that chronic thoracic subcutaneous nerve stimulation (ScNS) could reduce SG nerve activity (SGNA) and control paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT). METHODS: Thoracic ScNS was performed in 8 dogs while SGNA, vagal nerve activity (VNA), and subcutaneous nerve activity (ScNA) were monitored. An additional 3 dogs were used for sham stimulation as controls. RESULTS: Xinshu ScNS and left lateral thoracic nerve ScNS reduced heart rate (HR). Xinshu ScNS at 3.5 mA for 2 weeks reduced mean average SGNA from 5.32 µV (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.89-6.75) at baseline to 3.24 µV (95% CI 2.16-4.31; P = .015) and mean HR from 89 bpm (95% CI 80-98) at baseline to 83 bpm (95% CI 76-90; P = .007). Bilateral SG showed regions of decreased tyrosine hydroxylase staining with increased terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling-positive nuclei in 18.47% (95% CI 9.68-46.62) of all ganglion cells, indicating cell death. Spontaneous PAT episodes were reduced from 9.83 per day (95% CI 5.77-13.89) in controls to 3.00 per day (95% CI 0.11-5.89) after ScNS (P = .027). Left lateral thoracic nerve ScNS also led to significant bilateral SG neuronal death and significantly reduced average SGNA and HR in dogs. CONCLUSION: ScNS at 2 different sites in the thorax led to SG cell death, reduced SGNA, and suppressed PAT in ambulatory dogs.
