RESUMEN

The North of Jiangsu was a traditional area for leprosy in Chinese history. In the period of the Republic of China, one of the largest leprosy clinics in China was established in Ru Gao (Jugao) with the help of Chinese and foreign charitable organizations, the Chinese central government and some squires. It was the only large clinic for leprosy in the North of Jiangsu. It was officially opened in 1924, attached to the Presbyterian Church hospital, and was closed in 1927 after the breakout of the civil war. It reopened in May 1933, hosted by a leprologist, Lee S. Huizenga. Ru Gao (Jugao) leprosy clinic treated around 1,000 lepers in the North of Jiangsu with medicines and language communication. The establishment of the leprosy clinic made a historical contribution in terms of preventing leprosy from spreading to Shanghai. It closed in the spring of 1938 because of the invasion of the Japanese military.

RESUMEN

1. The purpose of this study was to see how dietary supplementation with phenylpyruvate affected broiler growth, slaughter performance, gut health microbiota and immunity. This information can be used to develop alternative approaches to antibiotic replacement in modern poultry production and health.2. A total of 288, one-day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to one of four groups (six replicates each replicate has 12 chickens). A control basal diet (NC), basal diet plus antibiotic virginiamycin 15ppm (PC), basal diet plus phenylpyruvate 1 kg/t or 2 kg/t, respectively (LCP and HCP).3. Results showed that the birds in the PC group had higher ADFI during the first 21 d, and better FCR than the NC group. The HCP-fed group had a higher all-eviscerated ratio than the NC group and less abdominal fat than the birds fed LCP. The birds fed HCP had increased villus length and crypt depth in the ileum compared to the NC group.4. The bursa index was lower in the HCP group whereas the thymus index was lower in LCP and PC groups. In contrast, birds fed HCP has lower pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1, as well as lower TLR4. Phenylpyruvate improved number in the Selenomonadaceae, genus Megamonas bacteroides spp., which are known for their beneficial effects on the maintenance of the cell surface structure, regulating aromatic amino acids and Clostridia jejuni-suppressive treatment respectively.5. It was concluded that phenylpyruvate can be utilised in feed to improve growth performance and positively modulate gut microbiota. However, this was less efficient than antibiotics in improving growth performance, although more efficient in improving productive performance and gut morphology. Moreover, a high dose of phenylpyruvate is more effective than a low dose.

RESUMEN

Chromium may regulate dairy cow metabolism; a chelated formation of chromium methionine (Cr-Met) is available to the feed industry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Cr-Met supplementation on lactation performance, hepatic respiratory rate and anti-oxidative capacity in early-lactating Holstein dairy cows. 64 multiparous cows were assigned to 16 blocks based on parity and milk yield and then the four cows in a block were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with 0, 4, 8 or 16 g/d of Cr-Met per cow supplemented to a basal diet. Cows were moved from an open dry lot to a naturally ventilated tie stall barn 2 weeks before treatment to adapt to this facility, fed and milked at 0630, 1400, and 1930 h every day. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. Milk yield and composition were recorded weekly. Dry matter intake was measured every 2 weeks for a total of six times throughout the trial. The plasma variables were measured in weeks 4, 8 and 12 of the experiment. Supplementation of Cr-Met did not affect DM intake of cows. As the supplementation of Cr-Met increased, yields of milk, fat, energy corrected milk (P < 0.01) and lactose (P = 0.01) increased in a linear manner. In terms of plasma variables, insulin concentration decreased in a linear manner with Cr-Met supplementation. As for variables relating to hepatic respiration rate, concentrations of pyruvate and NAD in the plasma were increased in quadratic manners, and lactic dehydrogenase activity was linearly increased as Cr-Met feeding levels increased. Moreover, plasma glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity were increased in a linear manner. In conclusion, our study suggested that Cr-Met supplementation improved lactation performance of early-lactating dairy cows through enhancing antioxidant capacity and hepatic cellular respiration.

RESUMEN

Rugao and Haian belonging to First Branch of Su-Wan Liberated Area found fulminant cholera in 1946. The fulminant cholera spread throughout the Su-Wan Liberated Area in a short period of time. Thus, local mass and military led by CPC actively launched the Movement of Epidemic Prevention. They took some actions to clear up the circumstance, eliminate the pathogen, prevent the food contamination and cut off the route of transmission. Vaccination was carried out on a large scale. As a result of these measure, the fulminant cholera was efficiently controlled.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effect of typhaneoside on ventricular remodeling and regulation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR autophagy transduction pathway in rats with heart failure after myocardial infarction. METHODS: The effects of typhaneoside on the general condition of rats were observed in vivo using a rat model of heart failure after myocardial infarction had been established. The expression of serum Nterminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), matrix lysin 2 (ST2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), and MMP-9 was detected via ELISA. A hypoxia/reoxygenation model was established to analyze the number and morphology of autophagosomes in vitro by transmission electron microscopy. Light chain 3 (LC3) variations were detected by immunofluorescence. Western blotting was used to assess LC3-II/LC3-I and p62 expression as well as pAkt/Akt, pmTOR/mTOR ratios. RESULTS: Compared with the sham group, the general condition scores of the rats in the model group decreased significantly, while the expression of serum NT-proBNP, ST2, IL-6, TNF-α, MMP-2, and MMP-9 increased. The number of autophagosomes in the drug-containing serum group was significantly reduced and the ratio of LC3-II/LC3-I was significantly decreased. The expression of P62 protein was increased, and the ratios of pAkt/Akt and pmTOR/mTOR were significantly increased. CONCLUSION: Typhaneoside regulates IL-6 and TNF-α as well as MMP-2 and MMP-9 in rats with heart failure after myocardial infarction. Typhaneoside can improve cardiac morphological structure and myocardial remodeling and enhance heart function. It may mediate autophagy inhibition in the cardiomyocyte anoxia/reoxygenation (A/R) pathway through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR autophagy transduction pathway.

RESUMEN

Pain inhibition by additional somatosensory input is the rationale for the widespread use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to relieve pain. Two main types of TENS produce analgesia in animal models: high-frequency (∼50-100 Hz) and low-intensity 'conventional' TENS, and low-frequency (∼2-4 Hz) and high-intensity 'acupuncture-like' TENS. However, TENS efficacy in human participants is debated, raising the question of whether the analgesic mechanisms identified in animal models are valid in humans. Here, we used a sham-controlled experimental design to clarify the efficacy and the neurobiological effects of 'conventional' and 'acupuncture-like' TENS in 80 human volunteers. To test the analgesic effect of TENS we recorded the perceptual and brain responses elicited by radiant heat laser pulses that activate selectively Aδ and C cutaneous nociceptors. To test whether TENS has a long-lasting effect on brain state we recorded spontaneous electrocortical oscillations. The analgesic effect of 'conventional' TENS was maximal when nociceptive stimuli were delivered homotopically, to the same hand that received the TENS. In contrast, 'acupuncture-like' TENS produced a spatially-diffuse analgesic effect, coupled with long-lasting changes both in the state of the primary sensorimotor cortex (S1/M1) and in the functional connectivity between S1/M1 and the medial prefrontal cortex, a core region in the descending pain inhibitory system. These results demonstrate that 'conventional' and 'acupuncture-like' TENS have different analgesic effects, which are mediated by different neurobiological mechanisms.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly used by those suffering from constipation. This paper reports the first critical integrative review of CAM use for people with constipation focusing upon the prevalence, type and cost of CAM use, as well as CAM users' profile, perception and motivations. METHODS: A comprehensive search of international literature was conducted in MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), and Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED). The search was limited to original research peer-reviewed English language articles concerning CAM use for constipation published with an abstract and full text between 2005 and 2015. RESULTS: A total of 35 papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The review shows approximately one in every three people suffering from constipation use CAM with herbal medicine the most commonly used CAM treatment for constipation and a large proportion of CAM use occurring concurrent with or in addition to conventional medical treatments. While early investigation suggests the cost of herbal medicine use in constipation care may be lower than that associated with the use other CAM modalities and conventional medications, this issue requires further research. CONCLUSIONS: Although a high percentage of people with constipation using CAM consider these treatments effective, there remains a need for further in-depth examination of both patient and provider perspectives as well as communication and decision-making around CAM use for constipation to inform safe, effective and coordinated care for patients with constipation.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and incidence of hypertension in women, and describe their self-care and health-seeking behaviours. This research was conducted as part of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, a study comprising a nationally representative sample of Australian women in three age groups. The focus of this research is 14 099 women born in 1946-1951, who have been surveyed six times (1996-2010). Student t-tests were used to compare women who did or did not have hypertension by their health-care utilization. Longitudinal analyses were conducted using a Poisson generalized estimating equation model. The incidence of hypertension among this cohort during 1996 to 2010 ranged from 400 to 597 participants per survey, resulting in an increase in prevalence of hypertension from 20.9% in 1996 to 41.3% in 2010. For all survey periods, women with hypertension had a significantly higher average number of visits to doctors and allied health practitioners compared with women without hypertension (P<0.005). The use of complementary medicine (practitioners and self-prescribed treatments) by women with hypertension was significantly lower compared to women without hypertension (P<0.005). Over time, conventional health-care utilization was higher for women with hypertension compared with women without hypertension (adjusted RR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.14, 1.22; P<0.0001). Our findings show that women with hypertension are using a range of conventional and complementary and alternative medicine: with hypertensive women using more conventional medicine and less complementary and alternative medicine than non-hypertensive women. As such, health-care providers should communicate with their patients regarding their use of complementary and alternative medicine in their efforts to provide safe, effective and coordinate care.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations between consultations with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners and menopause-related symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of 10 011 women aged 59-64 years from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, conducted in 2010. Women, including those with hysterectomy, oophorectomy and natural menopause, were asked about their consultations with a range of CAM practitioners and menopause-related symptoms experienced. RESULTS: Acupuncturists were more likely to be consulted by women with hysterectomy experiencing night sweats (odds ratio, OR = 2.21), but were less likely to be consulted by those experiencing hot flushes (OR = 0.53). Acupuncturists were also more likely to be consulted by women with oophorectomy (OR = 3.11) and natural menopausal women (OR = 1.57) experiencing back pain. Massage therapists were more likely to be consulted by women with oophorectomy experiencing back pain (OR = 1.98), women with hysterectomy experiencing anxiety (OR = 1.52), and natural menopausal women experiencing back pain (OR = 1.54) and/or anxiety (OR = 1.29). Naturopaths/herbalists were more likely to be consulted by women with oophorectomy experiencing leaking urine (OR = 2.08). Chiropractors/osteopaths were more likely to be consulted by women across all menopausal status experiencing back pain (OR = 2.52, 2.31 and 2.25 for women with oophorectomy, hysterectomy and natural menopause, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: There are substantial levels of CAM practitioners' consultations amongst menopausal women, with a range of menopause-related symptoms associated with the use of specific CAM practitioner modalities. It is important that health-care providers are mindful of CAM practitioner use in order to ensure safe, effective and coordinated treatment and support for menopausal women in their care.

RESUMEN

The dried roots of the plant Acanthopanax senticosus (AS) are used in traditional Oriental medicine and reportedly possess anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. However, whether AS has the same anti-inflammatory effect in vivo and the underlying mechanisms of this action remain unknown. In this study, we pretreated a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury with AS and found that the levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were reduced and that inflammation in lung tissues was attenuated. To determine the mechanisms of these actions, we next assessed the effects of AS on the activation of the nuclear factor (NF)-kB pathway. We found that AS decreased the level of NF-kB and the DNA-binding activity of NF-kB. In summary, we found that AS attenuated the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in the lung tissue of a mouse model of acute lung injury by inhibiting the NF-kB pathway.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To provide the first critical review of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) use amongst symptomatic menopausal women, drawing upon work examining the perspectives of both TCM users and TCM practitioners. METHODS: A search was conducted in three English-language databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL and AMED) and three Chinese-language databases (CNKI, VIP and CBM Disc) for 2002-2013 international peer-reviewed articles reporting empirical findings of TCM use in menopause. RESULTS: A total of 25 journal articles reporting 22 studies were identified as meeting the review inclusion criteria. Chinese herbal medicine appears to be the most common therapy amongst symptomatic menopausal women, and vasomotor symptoms and emotional changes are the most frequent symptoms for which TCM is sought. However, evidence regarding the prevalence of TCM use and users' profile in menopause is limited. Existing studies are of varied methodological quality, often reporting low response rate, extensive recall bias and a lack of syndrome differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: This review provides insights for practitioners and health policy-makers regarding TCM care to symptomatic menopausal women. More nationally representative studies are required to rigorously examine TCM use for the management of menopausal symptoms. Syndrome differentiation of menopausal women is an area which also warrants further attention.

RESUMEN

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are a family of structurally related nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids that are present in medicinal herbs such as Aristolochia species. The organic anion transporters (OATs) of the solute carrier (SLC22) gene family located in the renal proximal tubules play a key role in the excretion of a variety of exogenous and endogenous compounds. However, it is unclear how AAs permeate into renal epithelial cells. In this regard, we investigated the role of rat OAT1 ([rOAT1] SLC22A6) in the cellular uptake of AAI in vitro and in vivo. A concentration- and time-dependent intracellular accumulation of AAI was observed in rOAT1-transfected human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells, which was 2- to 6-fold higher than the control cells. There was a significantly increased rate of cellular apoptosis in rOAT1-transfected HEK293 cells than control cells after AAI treatment. Para-aminohippuric acid (PAH) significantly reduced the intracellular accumulation of AAI in rOAT1-transfected HEK293 cells. Administration of AAI for 35 days in rats caused significantly reduced expression of OAT1 in basolateral membrane and declined renal clearance of PAH as well as renal proximal tubule injuries. These findings indicate that AAI is taken up by OAT1, which then exert its intracellular toxic effects on renal proximal tubule cells, which in turn damage functional OAT1 and may further disturb the transport of its substrates.

RESUMEN

Ginsenosides are the main active ingredients in ginseng and have recently been reported to have beneficial effects on the CNS. Ocotillol is a derivate of pseudoginsenoside-F11, which is an ocotillol-type ginsenoside found in American ginseng. We examined the effects of ocotillol (a) on neuronal activity of projection neurons, mitral cells (MC), in a mouse olfactory bulb brain slice preparation using whole-cell patch-clamp recording, and (b) on animal behavior by measuring locomotor activity of mice in vivo. Ocotillol displayed an excitatory effect on spontaneous action potential firing and depolarized the membrane potential of MCs. The effect was concentration-dependent, with an EC(50) of 4 µM. In the presence of blockers of ionotropic glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic transmission (6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione [CNQX], 10 µM; D-AP5, 50 µM; gabazine, 5 µM), the excitatory effect of ocotillol on firing was abolished. Further experiments showed that the ocotillol-induced neuronal excitation persisted in the presence of GABA(A) receptor antagonist gabazine but was eliminated by applying AMPA/kainate receptor antagonist CNQX and N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist D-AP5, suggesting that ionotropic glutamate transmission was involved in mediating the effects of ocotillol. Bath application of ocotillol evoked an inward current as well as an increased frequency of spontaneous glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs). Both the inward current and sEPSCs could be blocked by ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists CNQX and D-AP5. These results indicate that the excitatory action of ocotillol on MCs was mediated by enhanced glutamate release. Behavioral experiments demonstrated that ocotillol increased locomotor activities of mice. Our results suggest that ocotillol-evoked neuronal excitability was mediated by increased release of glutamate, which may be responsible for the increased spontaneous locomotor activities in vivo.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a widespread condition characterized by acquired global impairment of intellect, memory and personality, but with no impairment of consciousness. There is no definitive medical or surgical treatment for vascular dementia. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method which has been used for both the prevention and treatment of diseases for over three thousand years. Preliminary searches revealed more than 105 studies of acupuncture for treating vascular dementia. Benefit was reported in up to 70-91% of the treatment group. Body acupuncture and electroacupuncture were the most commonly used techniques. A comparison of electroacupuncture and acupuncture therapy alone suggested that the former was more effective in promoting the recovery of cognitive function. OBJECTIVES: The objective is to assess the efficacy and possible adverse effects of acupuncture therapy for treating vascular dementia. SEARCH STRATEGY: The trials were identified from a search of the Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement group's Specialized Register on 2 February 2007 which contains records from all major health care databases and many ongoing trials databases. In addition the Allied and Complementary Medicine Database was searched and the web was searched using the search engine Copernic. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials testing acupuncture therapy in the treatment of vascular dementia were included regardless of language and publication types. The intervention and control group had to receive identical treatment apart from the acupuncture intervention. In view of possible confounding, studies in which acupuncture was combined with other treatments were subjected to subgroup analyses. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Titles and abstracts identified from the searches were checked by two reviewers. If it was clear that the study did not refer to a randomized controlled trial in vascular dementia, it was excluded. If it was not clear from the abstract and title, then the full text of study was obtained for an independent assessment by two reviewers. The outcomes measured in clinical trials of dementia and cognitive impairment often arise from ordinal rating scales. Summary statistics were required for each rating scale at each assessment time for each treatment group in each trial for change from baseline. MAIN RESULTS: In the absence of any suitable randomised placebo-controlled trials in this area, we were unable to perform a meta-analysis. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of acupuncture for vascular dementia is uncertain. More evidence is required to show that vascular dementia can be treated effectively by acupuncture. There are no RCTs and high quality trials are few. Randomised double-blind placebo controlled trials are urgently needed.

RESUMEN

In our previous studies, we have discovered that the extract of glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch (EGUF) can induce obvious apoptosis in gastric cancer cell Line MGC-803. Here, further investigation was carried on about the time-lapse changes of mitochondria transmembrane potential, intracellular free calcium ions, DNA electrophoresis, plasma membrane permeability and chromatin condensation during the apoptotic process of MGC-803 induced by EGUF and the influences of MPT-specific inhibitor Cyclosporin A(CsA) on these changes. Enhancement of plasma membrane permeability with PI staining, increase of intracellular free calcium ion and decrease of mitochondria transmembrane potential are early events in apoptotic cascades, prior to the appearances of apoptotic peak, chromatin condensation and DNA ladder. CsA significantly inhibited enhancement of plasma membrane permeability, change of intracellular free calcium ions and decrease of mitochondria transmembrane potential, also greatly delayed the progress of apoptosis. Thus, our results suggest that calcium and CsA-sensitive MPT is involved in the apoptosis of MGC-803 induced by EGUF.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to investigate the ethanolic extract of Semen Ziziphi jujuba (SZJE) induced anxiolytic effect. The SZJE was orally administered to male ICR mice, at 0.5, 1.0 and 2. 0 g/kg, 30 min before the behavioral evaluation in the black and white test (BWT) and elevated plus maze (EPM). The SZJE at the dosage 0.5-2.0 g/kg increased the first time entry, total changes and times spent in the white chamber of the BWT. The SZJE at the dosage 0.5-1.0 g/kg increased the percentage of time-spent and the percentage of arm entries in the open arms of the EPM and decreased the percentage of time-spent and the percentage of arm entries in the closed arms of the EPM. Furthermore, the SZJE at the dosage of 1. 0 g/kg prolonged the hexobarbital-induced sleeping time in mice and decreased the locomotor activity in rats. These results suggested that SZJE possessed anxiolytic effect at lower dose and sedative effect at higher dose.

RESUMEN

Ameliorating effects were investigated of the cognitive-enhancing Chinese herbs administered orally for 1 week-Panax ginseng (PG), Panax notoginseng (PNG), Dioscorea opposita (DO), Gastrodia elata (GE), Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM), Acorus gramineus (AG), Coptis chinensis (CC), Polygonum multiflorum (PM), Cyperus rotundus (CR) and Psoralea corylifolia (PC)-on the scopolamine (SCOP)-induced amnesia by using a passive avoidance task in rats. Of ten Chinese herbs, only PG, PNG, GE and CC prolonged the SCOP-shortened STL. These results revealed that PG, PNG GE and CC administered orally for 1 week improved the SCOP-induced learning and memory deficit in rats.

RESUMEN

An improved PCR-based subtractive hybridization strategy was used to clone apoptosis-related genes induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) from human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60 cells. The protocol used the cap-finder method, long-distance PCR, streptavidin magnetic bead-mediated subtraction and spin column chromatography. Twenty-seven clones related to apoptosis were identified by reverse dot blot assay. Seventeen were known genes, of which seven have been reported to be apoptosis related. The remaining 10 were unknown genes, five of which were sequenced and named apr-1 to apr-5. apr-1, apr-2, apr-3 and TNF were reidentified by reverse dot blot, and it is suggested that they might be related to apoptosis. The results suggest that this strategy might be efficient for large-scale cloning of differentially expressed genes in target cells.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the apoptosis in human gastric cancer cell MGC-803 induced by the extract of glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. METHODS: Apoptosis was detected by laser scanning confocal microscope, agarose gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry. The p53 gene expression was analyzed by double immunolabelling and immunohistochemistry technique. RESULTS: Chromatin condensation of different phases of apoptotic cells were observed by laser scanning confocal microscope, the percentage of apoptosis determined by flow cytometry was time- and dose-dependent, agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA exhibited obvious "ladder" in the cells treated with higher concentration of the extract of glycyrrhiza uralensis. The p53 gene expression was unchanged after treatment. CONCLUSION: Glycyrrhiza can induce human gastric cancer cell line MGC-803 to apoptosis by p53-independent pathway and can be used as a potential, natural apoptosis-inducing agent for gastric cancer therapy.

RESUMEN

The effects of Fructus Schisandrae (Schizandra Chinensis, (FS) on cycloheximide (CXM)-induced amnesia by using a passive avoidance task were studied in rats. FS at 0.25 and 0.75 g/kg administered for 1 week significantly prolonged the CXM-shortened step-through latency (STL). Of the fractions (n-hexane, chloroform and water), only the water fraction at 25 mg/kg administered for 1 week prolonged the CXM-shortened STL. These results suggest that the water fraction is the main active fraction of FS.
