RESUMEN

The distribution of Se in the blood and teeth (in the jaw and femoral bones) was evaluated using a new coefficient of relative radioactivity (RRA), representing the ratio of (75)Se in the teeth (bones) and blood. Changes in all RRA were studied during 1-192 hours after intraperitoneal injection of [(75)Se]selenate in one-month-old rats receiving common fodder; a biphasic pattern of changes was observed, with peaks 6 and 48 h and lowering 24 and 192 h postinjection. The first peak was mainly due to Se adsorption on hydroxyapatite, the second to chemo-adsorption on it and Se binding to protein. In 3-month-old rats receiving common fodder the peak of all RRA was delayed to 12-48 h postinjection, the values decreasing by 192 h. The peak of specific activity (SA) of (75)Se protein in the bones was recorded 24 h and its decrease 192 h postinjection. In one-month-old rats receiving sucrose-casein diet during 2 months all RRA and SA after 6 and 12 h and part of RRA after 24 h were higher than in the control, that is, Se absorption by bones and teeth from the blood decreased.

RESUMEN

The paper presents the results of examining the central part of the rat mandible for a month after its fracture. The rate of free radical oxidation was estimated by the levels of diene conjugates (DC), malonic dialdehyde (MDA) and by the activity of selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase (GPO). The findings suggest that there are profound injury-induced changes in free radical oxidation and antioxidative defense. The levels of DC and MDA showed the maximum upward change as a double-peaked curve and longer restoration to the level seen in control animals. These rats had the minimum enhanced GPO activity. In the animals receiving intragastric selenium methionine or selenium electrophoresis applied to the site of mandible fracture, alterations in DC and MDA were less pronounced and GPO showed a higher activity.

RESUMEN

Effects of the principal mineral and mineralizing components of the saliva, nutrient organic acids (carbohydrate and some others substances' metabolites) on the activity of microflora of soft dental deposit were studied in vitro. The inhibitory effect was assessed visually from the appearance or absence of deposit coating, pH measurement, and by photo- and nephelometry. Concentrations of lactic acid and sucrose were measured. The inactivating effects of the reagents were assessed by double control: qualitative, by comparing the specimen with the optic density of the extract from aqueous suspension of the deposit, and time control, by comparing the specimen with the optic density of extracts from deposit suspensions directly after mixing with the medium. Acid medium was found to block the formation of soft dental deposit and inhibit the production of lactic acid by bacterial deposit. Hence, weakly acid gargle is recommended as an effective and physiological measure preventing cariogenic situation resultant from the intake of easily fermenting carbohydrates.

RESUMEN

Mineral metabolism in the bones of 1- and 3-month rats reacts to a different extent to cutting the lower alveolar nerve. After deafferentation of the lower jaw, the decrease in the intensity of incorporation of the intraperitoneally injected [3-14C]-citrate and [35S]-sulphate in the bones is more significant in 1-month animals as compared to that in older ones. Deafferentation increased utilization of Na2H32PO4 and 45CaCl2 in the bones of younger rats, but decreased incorporation of 32P and remained unchanged incorporation of 45Ca in 3-month animals.

RESUMEN

The activation of lipid peroxidation in ophthalmoherpes may be determined by the reduction in glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity. The activity was less depressed in the contralateral eye. Administration of sodium selenite stimulated glutathione peroxidase activity and normalized superoxide dismutase activity.
