RESUMEN

The concept of multi-target-directed ligands offers fresh perspectives for the creation of brand-new Alzheimer's disease medications. To explore their potential as multi-targeted anti-Alzheimer's drugs, eighteen new bakuchiol derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by IR, NMR, and HRMS. Eighteen compounds were assayed for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) in vitro using Ellman's method. It was shown that most of the compounds inhibited AChE and BuChE to varying degrees, but the inhibitory effect on AChE was relatively strong, with fourteen compounds showing inhibition of >50% at the concentration of 200 µM. Among them, compound 3g (IC50 = 32.07 ± 2.00 µM) and compound 3n (IC50 = 34.78 ± 0.34 µM) showed potent AChE inhibitory activities. Molecular docking studies and molecular dynamics simulation showed that compound 3g interacts with key amino acids at the catalytically active site (CAS) and peripheral anionic site (PAS) of acetylcholinesterase and binds stably to acetylcholinesterase. On the other hand, compounds 3n and 3q significantly reduced the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 released from LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. Compound 3n possessed both anti-acetylcholinesterase activity and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, an in-depth study of compound 3n is expected to be a multi-targeted anti-AD drug.

BACKGROUND: Asperosaponin VI (AVI) is a natural triterpenoid saponin isolated from Dipsacus asper Wall with documented anti-inflammatory and bone protective effects. Our previous work reported that AVI protects the liver of septic mice from acute inflammatory damage. In this paper, we further explored the protective effect and the potential mechanisms of AVI in alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). METHODS: The Lieber-Decarli model was constructed to evaluate the effect of AVI on AFLD in C57BL/6 J mice. Additional in vitro work was performed to investigate HepG2 cells exposed to alcohol, then analyzed the degree of liver injury by detecting the ALT and AST levels both in the liver and serum. H&E staining and Sirius red staining were used to evaluate the histopathology variations in the liver. Further, observe lipid droplets in the cytoplasm by Oil Red O staining. We detected the expression of inflammatory cytokines with qualitative PCR; ROS, MDA, SOD, and GSH-px levels were analyzed to observe oxidative stress. Finally, exploring the activation of AMPK signaling pathway by real-time PCR and Western blotting. RESULTS: Histological examination of liver tissue combined with serum ALT and AST levels showed a significant protective effect of AVI against alcoholic liver injury in AFLD mice. Compared with the model group, AVI evidently improved antioxidant capacity, reduced inflammatory response and lipid accumulation both in vitro and in vivo. For mechanically, it was found that AVI up-regulated phosphorylation level of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and inhibited the endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER) pathway in AFLD. CONCLUSION: AVI protects mice from alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis and liver injury through activating AMPK signaling and repress ER stress, suggesting that it might be a potential therapeutic agent for AFLD.

Organic type-I photosensitizers (PSs) which produce aggressive reactive oxygen species (ROS) with less oxygen-dependent exhibit attractive curative effect for photodynamic therapy (PDT), as they adapt better to hypoxia microenvironment in tumors. However, the reported type-I PSs are limited and its exacted mechanism of oxygen dependence is still unclear. Herein, new selenium-containing type-I PSs of Se6 and Se5 with benzoselenadiazole acceptor has been designed and possessed aggregation-induced emission characteristic. Benefited from double heavy-atom-effect of selenium and bromine, Se6 shows a smaller energy gap (ΔEST ) of 0.03 eV and improves ROS efficiency. Interestingly, type-I radicals of both long-lived superoxide anion (O2 •‾ ) and short-lived hydroxyl (• OH) are generated from them upon irradiation. This may provide a switch-hitter of dual-radical with complementary lifetimes for PDT. More importantly, simultaneous processes to produce • OH are revealed, including disproportionation of O2 •‾ and reaction between excited PS and water. Actually, Se6 displays superior in-vitro PDT performance to commercial chlorin e6 (Ce6), under normoxia or hypoxia. After intravenous injection, a significantly in-vivo PDT performance is demonstrated on Se6, where tumor growth inhibition rates of 99% is higher than Ce6. These findings offer new insights about both molecular design and mechanism study of type-I PSs.

This paper aimed to explore the antidepressant effect of the essential oil from Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq.(EOST) on the treatment of depression and its mechanism by using a combination of network pharmacology and the mouse model of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced depression. The chemical components in EOST were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer(GC-MS), and 12 active components were selected as the study objects. The targets related to EOST were obtained by Traditional Chinese Medicines Systems Pharmacology(TCMSP) and SwissTargetPrediction database. The targets related to depression were screened out through GeneCards, Therapeutic Target Database(TTD), and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man(OMIM) database. The Venny 2.1 was applied to screen out the common targets of EOST and depression. The targets were imported into Cytoscape 3.7.2 to generate "drug-active component-diease-target" network diagram. The protein-protein interaction(PPI) network was constructed using STRING 11.5 database and Cytoscape 3.7.2, and the core targets were screened out. DAVID 6.8 database was used for Gene Ontology(GO) func-tional enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis, and subsequently the enrichment results were visualized through the bioinformatics platform. The mouse model of depression was induced by intraperitoneally injecting with LPS in mice. Before modeling, mice were administrated orally with EOST. The antidepressant effect of EOST was evalua-ted by tail suspension test(TST), forced swimming test(FST), and novelty suppressed feeding test(NSFT) after modeling. The content of interleukin(IL)-1ß was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), and the protein expression levels of IL-1ß and pro IL-1ß in the hippocampus were determined by Western blot. There were 12 main components and 179 targets in EOAT, of which, 116 targets were related to depression, mainly involved in neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, calcium signaling pathway, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP) signaling pathway. Biological processes such as synaptic signal transduction, G-protein coupled receptor signaling pathway, and chemical synaptic transmission were involved. Molecular functions such as neurotransmitter receptor activity, RNA polymerase Ⅱ transcription factor activity, and heme binding were involved. In mice experiments, the results showed that EOST at 100 mg·kg~(-1) and 50 mg·kg~(-1) significantly shortened the immobility time in TST and FST as well as the feeding latency in NSFT compared with the model group, decreased the levels of serum IL-1ß and NO, and reduced the protein expression levels of IL-1ß and pro IL-1ß in the hippocampus. In conclusion, EOST shows a good antidepressant effect in a multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway manner. The mechanism may be attributed to the fact that EOST can down-regulate the protein expression levels of IL-1ß and pro IL-1ß, decrease the release of inflammatory factors, and reduce neuroinflammation response.

Immunoisolation of pancreatic-islets in alginate-microcapsules is applied to treat diabetes. However, long-term islet function is limited, which might be due to damaged and lack of contact with pancreatic extracellular matrix (ECM) components. Herein we investigated the impact of collagen IV combined with laminin sequences, either RGD, LRE, or PDSGR, on graft-survival of microencapsulated bioluminescent islets in vivo. Collagen IV with RGD had the most pronounced effect. It enhanced after 8-week implantation in immune-incompetent mice the bioluminescence of allogeneic islets by 3.2-fold, oxygen consumption rate by 14.3-fold and glucose-induced insulin release by 9.6-fold. Transcriptomics demonstrated that ECM enhanced canonical pathways involving insulin-secretion and that it suppressed pathways related to inflammation and hypoxic stress. Also, 5.8-fold fewer capsules were affected by fibrosis. In a subsequent longevity study in immune-competent mice, microencapsulated allografts containing collagen IV and RGD had a 2.4-fold higher functionality in the first week after implantation and remained at least 2.1-fold higher during the study. Islets in microcapsules containing collagen IV and RGD survived 211 ± 24.1 days while controls survived 125 ± 19.7 days. Our findings provide in vivo evidence for the efficacy of supplementing immunoisolating devices with specific ECM components to enhance functionality and longevity of islet-grafts in vivo. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Limitations in duration of survival of immunoisolated pancreatic islet grafts is a major obstacle for application of the technology to treat diabetes. Accumulating evidence supports that incorporation of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules in the capsules enhances longevity of pancreatic islets. After selection of the most efficacious laminin sequence in vitro, we show in vivo that inclusion of collagen IV and RGD in alginate-based microcapsules enhances survival, insulin secretion function, and mitochondrial function. It also suppresses fibrosis by lowering proinflammatory cytokines secretion. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis shows that ECM-inclusion promotes insulin-secretion related pathways and attenuates inflammation and hypoxic stress related pathways in islets. We show that inclusion of ECM in immunoisolating devices is a promising strategy to promote long-term survival of islet-grafts.

Between November 2021 and January 2022, four patients of community-acquired pneumonia were admitted to the hospitals in Lishui city, Zhejiang province, China. Their main clinical manifestations were fever and dry cough as well as radiographic infiltrate, but the empiric antimicrobial therapy or traditional Chinese medicine was not effective for their illness. Clinical specimens from the patients as well as environmental and poultry specimens were collected for the determination of the causative pathogen. The ompA gene and seven housekeeping genes of Chlamydia psittaci were successfully amplified from all the patients, and the sequences of each gene were identical to one another, suggesting that they were infected by the same strain of C. psittaci. A novel strain of C. psittaci (LS strain) was isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patient 2 and its whole genome was obtained. Phylogenetic analyses based on the whole-genome sequences showed that the isolate is most closely related to the strain (WS/RT/E30) identified as genotype E/B. In addition, The ompA gene and four housekeeping genes of C. psittaci were also amplified from two of four faeces samples of geese at the home of patient 2, and the sequences from geese were 100% identical to those from the patients. Accordingly, these cases could be attributed to a circulating C. psittaci strain of genotype E/B in the local geese. Therefore, there is an urgent need to strengthen the regional surveillance on C. psittaci among poultry and humans for prevention and control of the outbreak of psittacosis in the city.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the novel protective effect of Asperosaponin VI (AVI) on sepsis and its potential mechanism. METHODS: In in vitro experiments, bone marrow mononuclear cells and THP-1-derived cells were used to evaluate the viability of AVI treatment. Besides, the quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot were adopted to explore the protective effect of AVI on LPS-induced inflammation. For in vivo work, the effect of AVI on mice was evaluated by using both CLP-induced and the LPS-induced sepsis mice model. The fluctuation of anal temperature and the behavior of mice were recorded after surgery. Further, the content of bacteria in peritoneal lavage fluid was detected, as well as the levels of ALT, AST, LD and LDH in serum with ELISA. H&E staining and real-time PCR were used to evaluate the histopathology of liver, spleen and lung. Finally, relevant signaling pathways were detected by Western blot, real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: AVI inhibited the expression of inflammatory factors in both CLP-induced and LPS-induced sepsis mice models, and reduced the number of bacteria in abdominal lavage fluid. The preventive treatment with AVI alleviated sepsis-induced organ injuries, reduced inflammatory responses, which was through inhibiting Hippo and Rho signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that AVI effectively protected mice from sepsis by down-regulating the activation of Hippo signaling and Rho family, and reducing inflammation and organ damage. However, conventional treatment was using antibiotics, and its mechanism was different with AVI.

Resin-containing drugs in Dracaena from four different appearances were analyzed by headspace sampling-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(HS-GC-MS) metabolomics technique and hierarchical clustering analysis(HCA) chemometrics method. This study was to analyze differential volatile components in resin-containing drugs in Dracaena from different appearance and metabolic pathways. The results of partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA) and HCA analysis indicated that there was little difference in volatile components between fiber-rich sample and hollow cork cambium sample, however, the volatile components in the two samples compared with whole body resin-containing sample and resin-secreting aggregated sample had a large metabolic difference. Twenty differential metabolites were screened by VIP and P values of PLS-DA. The content of these differential metabolites was significantly higher in whole body resin-containing sample and resin-secreting aggregated sample than in fiber-rich sample and hollow cork cambium sample. Sixteen significant metabolic pathways were obtained through enrichment analysis(P<0.05), mainly involved in terpenoids biosynthesis and phenylpropanoid metabolism. This result provided a reference for further study of resin formation mechanism of resin-containing drugs in Dracaena from different appearances. At the same time, it also provided a reference for establishing a multi-index quality evaluation system.

Nature has generously offered life-saving therapies to mankind by providing evolutionarily optimized drug-like entities in the form of natural products. These splendid gifts of nature have served as most suitable candidates for anti-cancer drug discovery due to their pleiotropic activity on target molecules. This review aims to provide an update on the natural sources and bioactivities of such gifts from nature, salvianolic acid A & B, which are major bioactive constituents of a traditional Chinses medicinal herb, Salvia miltiorrhiza. Salvianolic acid A & B have been reported to owe anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective activities. Currently salvianolic acids have been emerged as potent anti-cancer molecules. Salvianolic acid A & B fight cancer progression by prompting apoptosis, halting cell cycle and adjourning metastasis by targeting multiple deregulated signaling networks of cancer. Moreover, salvianolic acid A & B display potency towards sensitizing cancer cells to chemo-drugs. The review purposes that salvianolic acid A & B supply a novel opportunity for drug discovery but further experimentation is mandatory to embellish the knowledge of their pharmacological usage and to access their toxicological limits in order to establish these compounds as potential multitarget future drugs.

Nature, a vast reservoir of pharmacologically active molecules, has been most promising source of drug leads for the cure of various pathological conditions. Formononetin is one of the bioactive isoflavones isolated from different plants mainly from Trifolium pratense, Glycine max, Sophora flavescens, Pycnanthus angolensis, and Astragalus membranaceus. Formononetin has been well-documented for its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. Recently anticancer activity of formononetin is widely studied. This review aims to highlight the pharmacological potential of formononetin, thus providing an insight of its status in cancer therapeutics. Formononetin fights progression of cancer via inducing apoptosis, arresting cell cycle, and halting metastasis via targeting various pathways which are generally modulated in several cancers. Although reported data acclaims various biological properties of formononetin, further experimentation on mechanism of its action, medicinal chemistry studies, and preclinical investigations are surely needed to figure out full array of its pharmacological and biological potential.

Renal fibrosis is the common feature of chronic kidney disease and mainly mediated by TGFß-associated pro-fibrogenic signaling, which causes excessive extracellular matrix accumulation and successive loss of kidney functions. Sinomenine (SIN), an alkaloid derived from medicinal herb extensively used in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and various inflammatory disorders, displays renal protective properties in experimental animals; however its pharmacological potency against renal fibrosis is not explored. In this study we report that SIN possesses strong anti-renal fibrosis functions in kidney cell and in mouse fibrotic kidney. SIN beneficially modulated the pro-fibrogenic protein expression in TGFß-treated kidney cells and attenuated the renal fibrotic pathogenesis incurred by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), which correlated with its activation of Nrf2 signaling - the key defender against oxidative stress with anti-fibrotic potentials. Further investigation on its regulation of Nrf2 downstream events revealed that SIN significantly balanced oxidative stress via improving the expression and activity of anti-oxidant and detoxifying enzymes, and interrupted the pro-fibrogenic signaling of TGFß/Smad and Wnt/ß-catenin. Even more impressively SIN achieved its anti-fibrotic activities in an Nrf2-dependent manner, suggesting that SIN regulation of Nrf2-associated anti-fibrotic activities constitutes a critical component of SIN's renoprotective functions. Collectively our studies have demonstrated a novel anti-fibrotic property of SIN and its upstream events and provided a molecular basis for SIN's potential applications in treatment of renal fibrosis-associated kidney disorders.

Sinomenine is originally derived from medicinal herb and used preferentially in treatment of rheumatoid diseases in Far East regions. SIN has strong anti-inflammatory and immune-regulatory properties, acting mainly through inhibiting NF-kB signaling. Although the upstream target through which SIN affects NF-kB activity is unknown, evidence suggests that SIN might regulate inflammation through Nrf2 signaling. In this study we explored the role of Nrf2 in mediating SIN's anti-inflammation and kidney protection in a mouse model of obstructive nephropathy. We found that SIN is an activator of Nrf2 signaling. It markedly increased Nrf2 protein level, Nrf2 nuclear translocation, Nef2 transcription capacity, and the downstream protein expression. We further demonstrated that SIN activation of Nrf2 is likely due to its repression of the Nrf2 inhibitor Keap1 since it drastically reduced Keap1 protein through the PKC-sensitive ubiquitination-proteasomal degradation. SIN treatment of nephropathy mice effectively reduced the kidney damage and inflammatory responses, balanced renal oxidative stress, and improved the pathological protein expression in an Nrf2 dependent manner. In addition, SIN also Nrf2-dependently modulated macrophage M1/M2 polarization and inhibited the IkBα phosphorylation and NF-kB nuclear translocation, hence revealing an important upstream event that contributed to its anti-inflammation and tissue protection. Taken together our study has identified a novel pathway through which SIN exerts its anti-inflammation and renal protective functions, and provided a molecular basis for SIN potential applications in the treatment of kidney and other inflammatory disorders.

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of Ruji Recipe (RR) in preventing disease recurrence/metastasis and improving quality of life (QOL) for female breast cancer patients after operation.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Totally 102 female patients with stage I - III breast cancer were retrospectively analyzed. They were assigned to the treatment group (54 cases) and the control group (48 cases) according to whether they would rather accept RR therapy. Estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor (ER/PR) positive patients also accepted endocrine therapy. The overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), recurrence and metastasis, and QOL were compared between the two groups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Totally 100 patients completed the study. The median follow-up was 59 months. The median OS was 60 months in the treatment group and 52.5 months in the control group (chi2 = 3.274, P > 0.05). The median DFS was 55.0 months in the treatment group and 47.5 months in the control group (chi2 = 10.145, P < 0.01). The DFS rate was 75.9% (41/54) in the treatment group and 54.3% (25/46) in the control group (chi2 = -2.259, P < 0.05). There was statistical difference in the 2-, 3-, and 5-year DFS between the two groups (P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in the 2-year DFS 3-year DFS between stage II and III and stage III (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). There was statistical difference in the ER positive patients between 2-year DFS and 3-year DFS (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). There was statistical difference in the 3-and 5-year distant metastasis rate (DMR) in the treatment group, lower than that of the control group (3.7% vs 31.0%, 20.7% vs 60.7%; P < 0.01). By the end of follow-up, disease progression occurred in 13 cases of the treatment group, local recurrence in 3 cases, single organ metastasis in 7 cases, multi-metastasis in 3 cases, while the corresponding numbers were 21, 1, 11, and 9 in the control group (P < 0.05). As for 1 week before study and at 2-year follow-up using Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for Breast Cancer (FACT-B) system, there was statistical difference in the QOL between the two groups (P < 0.05), and better effect was obtained in the treatment group.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>RR, as an assistant therapy, could improve the OS rate, the DFS rate, and the QOL for post-surgical female breast cancer patients in 2 -3 years.</p>

A north-south transect was established in the saline-alkali land of Yellow River old course at Diaokou of northern Yellow River Delta, Shandong Province of East China to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of soil nutrients and salinity and related affecting factors by using geostatistics method. In the study area, the nugget/still of soil organic matter, total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents and soil salinity were 0.38, 0.40, 0.50, 0.32, and 0.34, respectively, which demonstrated that these five parameters were moderately spatial dependence. The soil organic matter and TN contents in this transect had a similar distribution pattern, soil AK content was highly correlated to soil salinity, while soil AP content presented a fluctuated distribution. According to the comprehensive analysis of soil organic matter content and salinity, this transect was classified into three types, i.e., high salinity and low fertility, high salinity and high fertility, and low salinity and high fertility. The spatial distribution pattern of the five soil parameters was closed related to the soil parental material, land use pattern, distance to sea, and road block.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the efficacy of Chinese medicine comprehensive therapeutic project in treating the middle/late stage primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>With prospective randomized controlled design, 97 patients with PHC were assigned to the test group (49 cases) treated with Chinese medicine comprehensive therapy using Oleum fructus bruceas intervention combining oral intake of Ganji Decoction and external application of Ailitong, and the control group (48 cases) treated with chemotherapeutic agents combining iodized oil chemo-embolization and analgesics. The immediate and long-term efficacy, adverse reaction, pain-relieving initial time (PRIT) and pain-relieving sustained time (PRST) of the treatment, as well as the change in relieving patients' quality of life (QOL) were observed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The difference between the two groups in illness control rate was statistically insignificant (P>0.05), but the adverse reaction occurrence rate in the test group was lesser than that in the control group (P<0.05). PRIT was insignificantly different in the two groups (P>0.05), but the PRST was significantly superior in the test group than that in the control group (10.37+/-2.18 h vs 7.78+/-1.95 h, P<0.01). After treatment, the increased Karnofsky scores in the test group indicated that the patients' somatic activity, symptoms and QOL were improved significantly, which were significantly superior to those in the control group (P<0.05). The survival rate in the two groups was similar at the 3rd month after treatment, but the test group did show superiority in terms of half- and 1-year survival rate (65.9% vs 42.5% and 38.6% vs 18.1%, respectively, P<0.05). The median survival time in the test group was 8.9 months and that in the control group was 5.3 months.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Chinese medicine comprehensive therapy is an effective treatment for the middle/late stage patients of PHC, and it could extend the PRST, improve the patients' QOL and long-term survival with less adverse reaction.</p>

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>No-reflow after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is related to the severe prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Tongxinluo, a traditional Chinese medicine, on no-reflow and the infarction area after emergency PCI for STEMI.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 219 patients (female 31, 14%) undergoing emergency PCI for STEMI from nine clinical centers were consecutively enrolled in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trial from January 2007 to May 2009. All patients were randomly divided into Tongxinluo group (n = 108) and control group (n = 111), given Tongxinluo or placebo in loading dose 2.08 g respectively before emergency PCI with aspirin 300 mg and clopidogrel 300 mg together, then 1.04 g three times daily for six months after PCI. The ST segment elevation was recorded by electrocardiogram at hospitalization and 1, 2, 6, 12, 24 hours after coronary balloon dilation to evaluate the myocardial no-flow; myocardial perfusion scores of 17 segments were evaluated on day 7 and day 180 after STEMI with static single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to determine the infarct area.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There was no statistical significance in sex, age, past history, chest pain, onset-to-reperfusion time, Killip classification, TIMI flow grade just before and after PCI, either in the medication treatment during the follow up such as statin, β-blocker, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) between two groups. There was significant ST segment restoration in Tongxinluo group compared to the control group at 6 hours ((-0.22 ± 0.18) mV vs. (-0.18 ± 0.16) mV, P = 0.0394), 12 hours ((-0.24 ± 0.18) mV vs. (-0.18 ± 0.15) mV, P = 0.0158) and 24 hours ((-0.27 ± 0.16) mV vs. (-0.20 ± 0.16) mV, P = 0.0021) reperfusion; and the incidence of myocardial no-reflow was also reduced significantly at 24-hour reperfusion (34.3% vs. 54.1%, P = 0.0031). The myocardial perfusion scores of 17 segments evaluated by static SPECT was improved significantly on day 7 and day 180 after STEMI in Tongxinluo group compared to the control group (0.61 ± 0.40 vs. 0.76 ± 0.42, P = 0.0109 and 0.51 ± 0.42 vs. 0.66 ± 0.43, P = 0.0115, respectively). There was no significant difference in severe adverse events between two groups.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Tongxinluo as a kind of traditional Chinese medicine could reduce myocardial no-reflow and infarction area significantly after emergency PCI for STEMI with conventional medicine therapy.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe and compare the quality of life (QOL) and survival time in patients with advanced primary hepatic cancer (PHC) after they have been treated by the combination of ganji recipe and interventional therapy with Fructus Bruceae Oil Emulsion (FBE) or by the trans-hepatic arterial chemical embolization (TACE) adopting Seldinger's technique.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Seventy-seven patients with advanced PHC were randomly assigned to two groups, 37 patients in the control group treated with TACE alone, and 40 in the treatment group with the combined therapy. One therapeutic course was 4 weeks, and the intervention therapy was repeated generally after an interval of 4-6 weeks according to patients'condition ,the average intervention frequency was 2.3 for one case. The QOL and the survival time in patients were evaluated after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Significant difference was shown in the changes of the Karnofsky score between the two groups (P < 0.05). The scores suggested that the improvements in the treatment group, including patients'physical energy enhancing, symptoms alleviating and overall QOL improving, were superior to those in the control group (P < 0.05). No significant difference of the 3-month survival rate between the two groups was found (P > 0.05), but the 0.5- and 1-year survival rate were significantly superior in the treatment group to those in the control group (67.6% vs. 42.4% and 38.2% vs. 16.1%, respectively). The median survival time in the two groups was 8.9 and 5.3 months respectively.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Combination of ganji recipe and interventional therapy with FBE in treating PHC could improve patients' QOL, raise the 0.5- and 1-year survival rate, and prolong the survival time, suggesting TCM treatment has an affirmative significance for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy and improving the prognosis in patients.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of Fructus Bruceae oil emulsion (FBE) on cellular immune function (CIF) and quality of life (QOF) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after chemotherapy.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>One hundred and fifteen patients with mid-late stage NSCLC were randomly assigned to two groups, the 57 patients in the control group were only treated with chemotherapy of GP regimen, 58 in the treatment group with the chemotherapy of the same regimen and combined with FBE. The clinical efficacy was evaluated after two cycles of chemotherapy.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The effective rate was 51.8% and 47.4% in the treatment group and the control group respectively, the difference between them was insignificant (P > 0.05). CIF and QOF in the treatment group were better than those in the control group after chemotherapy respectively (P < 0.01), in the latter, CIF and QOF were desreased after chemotherapy (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>FBE combined with chemotherapy can improve the cellular immune function and quality of life in patients with mid-late stage NSCLC.</p>
