There is increasing concern among both healthcare professionals and the general public about the long-term effectiveness and possible adverse effects of medicines used to treat premature ejaculation (PE) and erectile dysfunction (ED). There is also a growing recognition of the advantages of incorporating alternative or traditional approaches into healthcare systems. Yoga is gaining popularity globally and has emerged as a viable adjunct and alternative to add value to patient care and prevention of illnesses, which requires further investigation. This scoping review aimed to explore the effects of yoga as an independent or adjunct intervention in treating ED and PE. In this review study, researchers conducted a systematic literature review from 2000 to 2023 as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Electronic databases of Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed were used for literature searches. Studies published in the English language on male individuals with ED and PE and those with comorbid stress, anxiety, and depression were also included. Studies on these sexual dysfunctions, comorbid with HIV/AIDS, and severe psychiatric conditions, i.e., schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorders, and substance dependence, except alcohol, were excluded. Ten studies out of the 2016 selected articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. The findings of this scoping review revealed that yoga interventions are more effective in managing PE and ED, with a greater emphasis on the former. Yoga is an effective, safe, and affordable approach recommended for managing erectile functions and PE. Men can improve their quality of life and regain confidence in sexual functioning by incorporating yoga into their routines. The study shows the potential benefits of yoga for both conditions, indicating the need for further robust studies in this area. Researchers advocate practising yoga under professional supervision for optimal safety and guidance.

The present study was conducted to ascertain whether the role of kisspeptin in promoting in vitro development of preantral follicles was through the regulation of P450 aromatase gene expression and steroidogenesis in sheep. Accordingly, the cumulus cells and oocytes were collected from different development stages of preantral follicles grown in vivo and cultured in vitro in TCM199B (Group I), TCM199B + KP (10 µg/mL) (Group II) and Standard medium + KP (10 µg/mL). To measure the steroid (Estradiol-17ß; E2 and Progesterone; P4 ) synthesis through ELISA, spent culture medium was collected separately from the same in vitro groups. E2 synthesis in the spent medium collected from all the three groups showed an increasing trend from PFs' exposed to respective culture media for 3 min to 2-day culture stage but decreased thereafter till 6-day culture stage. This is followed by a sharp increase in E2 concentration in the spent medium collected after in vitro maturation. However, P4 synthesis in group III followed increased pattern as the development progressed from PFs' exposed to culture medium for 3 min to in vitro maturation stage. The steroid production was observed at all stages of in vitro development in altered supplemented conditions. The steroid synthesis in the spent medium was highest in the 6 day cultured PFs' in Standard medium + KP matured in vitro for 24 h. Therefore, supplementation of kisspeptin along with other growth factors promoted steroid production in cultured preantral follicles far better than in other media.

Cells that cannot synthesize one of the DNA precursors, dTTP, due to thyA mutation or metabolic poisoning, undergo thymineless death (TLD), a chromosome-based phenomenon of unclear mechanisms. In Escherichia coli, thymineless death is caused either by denying thyA mutants thymidine supplementation or by treating wild-type cells with trimethoprim. Two recent reports promised a potential breakthrough in TLD understanding, suggesting significant oxidative damage during thymine starvation. Oxidative damage in vivo comes from Fenton's reaction when hydrogen peroxide meets ferrous iron to produce hydroxyl radical. Therefore, TLD could kill via irreparable double-strand breaks behind replication forks when starvation-caused single-strand DNA gaps are attacked by hydroxyl radicals. We tested the proposed Fenton-TLD connection in both thyA mutants denied thymidine, as well as in trimethoprim-treated wild-type (WT) cells, under the following three conditions: (i) intracellular iron chelation, (ii) mutational inactivation of hydrogen peroxide (HP) scavenging, and (iii) acute treatment with sublethal HP concentrations. We found that TLD kinetics are affected by neither iron chelation nor HP stabilization in cultures, indicating no induction of oxidative damage during thymine starvation. Moreover, acute exogenous HP treatments completely block TLD, apparently by blocking cell division, which may be a novel TLD prerequisite. Separately, the acute trimethoprim sensitivity of the rffC and recBCD mutants demonstrates how bactericidal power of this antibiotic could be amplified by inhibiting the corresponding enzymes. IMPORTANCE Mysterious thymineless death strikes cells that are starved for thymine and therefore replicating their chromosomal DNA without dTTP. After 67 years of experiments testing various obvious and not so obvious explanations, thymineless death is still without a mechanism. Recently, oxidative damage via in vivo Fenton's reaction was proposed as a critical contributor to the irreparable chromosome damage during thymine starvation. We have tested this idea by either blocking in vivo Fenton's reaction (expecting no thymineless death) or by amplifying oxidative damage (expecting hyperthymineless death). Instead, we found that blocking Fenton's reaction has no influence on thymineless death, while amplifying oxidative damage prevents thymineless death altogether. Thus, oxidative damage does not contribute to thymineless death, while the latter remains enigmatic.

In this study, two biosurfactant producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa sp. were isolated from motor oil contaminated soil for crude oil, alkane and PAH degradation studies. Metagenomics analysis identified as proteobacteria phyla was the dominant. Isolated two bacterial species were well grown in mineral salt medium with 1% of crude oil, alkanes (dotriacontane and tetratetracontane) and PAH (pyrene, benzopyrene and anthracene) as sole carbon sources. Total biodegradation efficiency (BE) of strains PP3 and PP4 in Crude oil degradation evaluated by the analysis of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was 50% and 86% respectively. BE of PP3, PP4 and mixed consortium in alkane biodegradation were 46%, 47% and 36%, respectively. BE of PP3, PP4 and mixed consortium in PAH biodegradation were 22%, 48% and 35%, respectively. Based on the results revealed that strain pp4 was more efficient bacteria to degrade the crude oil, alkane and PAH than pp3. This was due to the higher production of biosurfactant by PP4 than PP3 and also confirmed in the test of emulsification index (E24). FTIR results showed that the produced biosurfactant could partially solubilize the crude oil hydrocarbons, alkanes and PAH and confirmed as glycolipid (rhamnolipid) in nature. Thus, the obtained results from the GCMS showed that all hydrocarbons were utilized by bacteria as carbon source for biosurfactant production and utilize the high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Based on the present study we can suggest that identified potential biosurfactant producing bacteria are used for biodegradation of high molecular weight hydrocarbon (>C40).

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of stress is increasing. Stress adversely affects cognitive ability, sleep quality, and overall psychological well-being. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal), an essential medicine in Ayurveda, is reportedly beneficial in reducing stress and improving memory. This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated the effect of Ashwagandha root extract sustained-release capsule 300 mg (Prolanza™; hereafter Ashwagandha SR) on cognitive functions, stress levels, sleep quality, overall well-being, and safety in stressed subjects. METHODS: Subjects (130 healthy cognitively sound adults [20-55 years, body mass index:18-29 kg/m2]) having a Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) score of 14-24 were randomized to receive either Ashwagandha SR or placebo. Subjects took one capsule of Ashwagandha SR or placebo daily for 90 consecutive days. This study was registered on Clinical Trials Registry-India (CTRI) on 13/11/2019 [number: CTRI/2019/11/021990]. The primary endpoint was the change in cognitive function as measured by CANTAB from baseline to the end of the study period (90 ± 7 days). The secondary outcomes included the change in PSS-10 score, serum cortisol level (9-11 am), the OHQ score, the PSQI, and serum BDNF levels. RESULTS: Only 125 completed the study and were evaluated. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) reported significantly improved recall memory, and the total error rate in recalling patterns significantly decreased at visit 4 in the Ashwagandha SR group vs. the placebo group (first attempt memory score:12.9 ± 6.7 vs. 10.1 ± 6.3; total errors:17.5 ± 23.3 vs. 27.7 ± 23.6). At visit 4, lower PSS-10 score (13.0 ± 5.0 vs. 18.7 ± 4.6; p < .0001), serum cortisol levels (p=0.0443), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score (p < .0001) but higher Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) scores (p < .0001) were seen in Ashwagandha SR vs. the placebo group, suggesting significantly lower stress levels and significantly better psychological well-being and sleep quality in the former. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first clinical study assessing Ashwagandha SR for its safety and efficacy. Treatment with one Ashwagandha SR capsule once daily for 90 days improved memory and focus, psychological well-being, and sleep quality, reduced stress levels, and was safe and well-tolerated.

There have been reports of different types of wound dressings for various functions and purposes. Cotton being one of the most widely used wound dressing material due to its non-toxic, biodegradable, and other properties is used for fabrication as well as in the form of scaffolds for faster and effective wound closure. Our research team has already demonstrated the role of silver nitroprusside nanoparticles (SNPNPs) for wound healing and antibacterial activity. In the current study, we have developed cotton fabric impregnated with SNPNPs (SNPCFs) which remain photo inert and displayed long-term antimicrobial activity due to the surface modification with the silver nitroprusside complex. These SNPCFs were characterized by various analytical techniques (XRD, FTIR, UV spectroscopy, TGA, TEM, FESEM, EDAX, ICP-OES). The fabricated cotton dressings with nanoparticles showed an improved water contact angle (113-130°) than that of bare cotton gauze (60°) and exhibited more antibacterial property in case of both Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella aerogenes and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis) even after several washings. The biocompatible nature of SNPCFs was assessed by in vivo chorioallantoic membrane assay that showed no obstruction in the formation of blood vessels. The SNPCFs exhibited better wound healing activity compared to the bare cotton and AgCFs as observed in the C57BL6/J mouse. The histopathological investigation reveals increase in re-epithelialization and deposition of connective tissue. The macrophage (M2) counts in SNPCF-treated skin tissues were supportive of more wound healing activity than mice treated with cotton fabric impregnated with chemically synthesized silver nanoparticles. Based on biodistribution analysis using ICP-OES, the data illustrated that a significant amount of silver is absorbed in the skin tissues of mice as compared to the blood and kidney. Furthermore, the absence of silver from the vital organs (heart, liver, and kidney) corroborates our hypothesis that the SNPCFs can act excellently in treating wounds when topically applied over skin. Thereafter, all these results highlight a strong possibility that SNPCFs exemplify the potential as a new antimicrobial and wound healing agent in future times.

Childhood psoriasis is recognized as a potential multisystem disorder and hence it is imperative to optimize disease management to arrest progression, minimize psychological burden and evolution of metabolic syndrome. Clinical practice recommendations are necessary to assist practitioners in appropriate decision making based on available evidence. Owing to the lack of Indian recommendations on childhood psoriasis, the SIG Pediatric Dermatology under IADVL Academy undertook an evidence-based approach based on published literature on the topic, between January 2000 and July 2020 to frame the recommendations.

Increasing number of reports on uranium contamination in groundwater bodies is a growing concern. Deinococcus radiodurans biofilm-based U(VI) bioremediation has great potential to provide solution. This study focuses on the kinetic modelling of uranium biosorption by D. radiodurans biofilm biomass and identification of the functional groups involved in the sequestration process. The effect of temperature, pH and amount of biofilm dry mass were studied using two uranyl ion concentrations (100 and 1000 mg/L). D. radiodurans dry biomass showed good affinity for uranyl ion adsorption. The kinetic experiments revealed that the biosorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The modelling of kinetic adsorption data revealed that U(VI) sorption by D. radiodurans biofilm biomass follows a pseudo-second-order reaction. Mechanism of U(VI) sorption was suggested to follow an intra-particle diffusion model, which includes covalent bonding between U(VI) and functional groups present on the surface of biofilm biomass, and diffusional barrier acts as a rate limiting step. External mass transfer was the rate-limiting step as evident from Boyd and Elovich plot. Chemical modifications in surface functional groups of biofilm biomass, confirmed the involvement of carboxyl, phosphate, and hydroxyl groups in uranium binding as a significant loss in U(VI) sorption capacity was recorded in these chemically modified biomasses. XRD data indicated the formation of metal deposits, predominantly as uranyl phosphates.

In this study, Staphylococcus aureus biofilms, which are considered a foe for being pathogenic, were tested for their uranium bioremediation capacity to find out if they can turn out to be a friend. Acid phosphatase activity, which is speculated to aid in bio-precipitation of U(VI) from uranyl nitrate solution, was assayed in biofilms of seven different S. aureus strains. The presence of acid phosphatase enzyme was detected in the biofilms of all S. aureus strains (in the range of 3.1 ± 0.21 to 26.90 ± 2.32 µi.u./g), and found to be higher when compared to that of their planktonic phenotypes. Among all, S. aureus V329 biofilm showed highest biofilm formation ability along with maximum phosphatase activity (26.9 ± 2.32 µi.u./g of biomass). Addition of phosphate enhanced the U(VI) remediation when treated with uranyl nitrate solution. S. aureus V329 biofilm showed significant U tolerance with only a 3-log reduction when exposed to 10 ppm U(VI) for 1 h. When treated in batch mode, V329 biofilm successfully remediated up to 47% of the 10 ppm U(VI). This new approach using the acid phosphatase from the S. aureus V329 biofilm presents an alternative method for the remediation of uranium contamination.

Deinococcus radiodurans is the most radiation-tolerant organism ever known. It has gained importance in recent years as a potential candidate for bioremediation of heavy metals, especially the radioactive type. This study investigates the efficiency of a recombinant D. radiodurans (DR1-bf+) strain with an ability to form biofilm for uranium remediation. The modified Arsenazo III dye method was used to estimate the uranium concentration. Uranyl nitrate aqueous solution was generated during the operation of nuclear fuel reprocessing. The D. radiodurans biofilm (DR1-bf+) grown in the presence of 20 mM Ca2+ showed remarkable ability of uranyl ion removal. DR1-bf+ (Ca2+) biofilm removed ~75+/-2% of 1000 mg/L uranium within 30 min post-treatment from uranyl nitrate aqueous solution. Uranium removal rate was also found to be directly proportional to biofilm age. This study discusses the ability of D. radiodurans biofilm in uranium removal.

Wearable electronics have become the norm over the last few years. Extensive use of wearable wireless devices (WWD) in greater proximity to the body has increased concern about potential biological effects due to the interaction of human tissues with electromagnetic (EM) fields. Human tissues absorb radiofrequency (RF) waves that are capable of affecting energy states at a molecular level, leading to unsafe effects. Remarkably, thermal effect due to the absorption of RF waves is a better biological manifestation than traditional specific absorption rate (SAR) values. In this study, we investigated the application of infrared thermography (IRT) to obtain temperature dynamics and reconstructed average SAR to evaluate the exposure compliance of WWDs. A microstrip-based monopole antenna was used to determine the biological effects of the interaction of EM waves with the body. SAR was obtained using EM field simulations and through reconstruction from thermal measurements with the use of bio-heat equations. The maximum average SAR on the skin was 50 mWkg-1 for the simulations and 54 mWkg-1 from reconstruction after IRT experiments. The maximum temperature change in both cases was observed to be less than 1 °C. The difference between the average SAR obtained through IRT and simulation tools was 8.9% on average. SAR determination from the information acquired using IR temperature dynamics can assess bio-compliance of modern wearable devices for various wireless applications. KEY MESSAGE: Pollen-specific expression. Promoters comprise of various cis-regulatory elements which control development and physiology of plants by regulating gene expression. To understand the promoter specificity and also identification of functional cis-acting elements, progressive 5' deletion analysis of the promoter fragments is widely used. We have evaluated the activity of regulatory elements of 5' promoter deletion sequences of anther-specific gene OSIPP3, viz. OSIPP3-∆1 (1504 bp), OSIPP3-∆2 (968 bp), OSIPP3-∆3 (388 bp) and OSIPP3-∆4 (286 bp) through the expression of transgene GUS in rice. In silico analysis of 1504-bp sequence harboring different copy number of cis-acting regulatory elements such as POLLENLELAT52, GTGANTG10, enhancer element of LAT52 and LAT56 indicated that they were essential for high level of expression in pollen. Histochemical GUS analysis of the transgenic plants revealed that 1504- and 968-bp fragments directed GUS expression in roots and anthers, while the 388- and 286-bp fragments restricted the GUS expression to only pollen, of which 388 bp conferred strong GUS expression. Further, GUS staining analysis of different panicle development stages (P1-P6) confirmed that the GUS gene was preferentially expressed only at P6 stage (late pollen stage). The qRT-PCR analysis of GUS transcript revealed 23-fold higher expression of GUS transcript in OSIPP3-Δ1 followed by OSIPP3-Δ2 (eightfold) and OSIPP3-Δ3 (threefold) when compared to OSIPP3-Δ4. Based on our results, we proposed that among the two smaller fragments, the 388-bp upstream regulatory region could be considered as a promising candidate for pollen-specific expression of agronomically important transgenes in rice.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In the traditional system of medicine in India Ashwagandha powder and Sidh Makardhwaj have been used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. However, safety and efficacy of this treatment have not been evaluated. Therefore, the present study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ayurvedic treatment (Ashwagandha powder and Sidh Makardhwaj) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: One hundred and twenty five patients with joint pain were screened at an Ayurvedic hospital in New Delhi, India. Eighty six patients satisfied inclusion criteria and were included in the study. Detailed medical history and physical examination were recorded. Patients took 5g of Ashwagandha powder twice a day for three weeks with lukewarm water or milk. Sidh Makardhwaj (100 mg) with honey was administered daily for the next four weeks. The follow up of patients was carried out every two weeks. The primary efficacy end point was based on American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 20 response. Secondary end points were ACR50, ACR70 responses, change from baseline in disease activity score (DAS) 28 score and ACR parameters. Safety assessments were hepatic function [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin and ß2 microglobulin], renal function (urea and creatinine and NGAL) tests and urine mercury level. RESULTS: The study was completed by 90.7 per cent (78/86) patients. Patients with moderate and high disease activity were 57.7 per cent (45/78) and 42.3 per cent (33/78), respectively. All patients were tested positive for rheumatoid factor and increased ESR level. Ashwagandha and Sidh Makardhwaj treatment decreased RA factor. A significant change in post-treatment scores of tender joint counts, swollen joint counts, physician global assessment score, patient global assessment score, pain assessment score, patient self assessed disability index score and ESR level were observed as compared to baseline scores. ACR20 response was observed in 56.4 per cent (44/78) patients (American College of Rheumatology criteria) and moderate response in 39.74 per cent (31/78) patients [European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) criteria]. Ayurvedic treatment for seven weeks in rheumatoid arthritis patients showed normal kidney and liver function tests. However, increased urinary mercury levels were was observed after treatment. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study suggest that this Ayurvedic treatment (Ashwagandha powder and Sidh Makardhwaj) has a potential to be used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. However, due to small sample size, short duration, non randomization and lack of a control group as study limitations, further studies need to be done to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hepato protective and antioxidant capacity of Melochia corchorifolia (M. corchorifolia) aerial part extracts. METHODS: Antioxidant activity was evaluated by using three free radicals (Superoxide, Hydroxyl and DPPH) and hepatoprotective activity was assessed against CCl4 induced liver intoxication in rats. RESULTS: The extracts produced concentration dependent percentage protection in decrease of serum enzymes and percentage inhibition on free radicals. Among all extracts methanol extract showed better activity with percentage protection of SGOT (78.98%), SGPT (79.65%), ALP (82.48%) and total bilirubin (80.0%) levels against CCl4 liver intoxication and also methanolic extract showed better activity with IC50 values on superoxide, hydroxyl and DPPH radicals were 127 µ g, 240 µ g and 179 µ g. CONCLUSIONS: From the results obtained during the study it could be concluded that M. corchorifolia aerial part extracts have antioxidant and hepatoprotective components. Further study is necessary for isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules which are responsible for hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity.

RESUMEN

The development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 (DSM-5) has been an exhaustive and elaborate exercise involving the review of DSM-IV categories, identifying new evidence and ideas, field testing, and revising issues in order that it is based on the best available evidence. This report of the Task Force of the Indian Psychiatric Society examines the current draft of the DSM-5 and discusses the implications from an Indian perspective. It highlights the issues related to the use of universal categories applied across diverse cultures. It reiterates the evidence for mental disorders commonly seen in India. It emphasizes the need for caution when clinical categories useful to specialists are employed in the contexts of primary care and in community settings. While the DSM-5 is essentially for the membership of the American Psychiatric Association, its impact will be felt far beyond the boundaries of psychiatry and that of the United States of America. However, its atheoretical approach, despite its pretensions, pushes a purely biomedical agenda to the exclusion of other approaches to mental health and illness. Nevertheless, the DSM-5 should serve a gate-keeping function, which intends to set minimum standards. It is work in progress and will continue to evolve with the generation of new evidence. For the DSM-5 to be relevant and useful across the cultures and countries, it needs to be broad-based and consider social and cultural contexts, issues, and phenomena. The convergence and compatibility with International Classification of Diseases-11 is a worthy goal. While the phenomenal effort of the DSM-5 revision is commendable, psychiatry should continue to strive for a more holistic understanding of mental health, illness, and disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the in-vitro antibacterial activity and anti-inflammatory activity of orally administered different extracts (Hydro-alcoholic, methanolic, ethyl acetate and hexane) of Rauvolfia tetraphylla (R. tetraphylla) root bark in Carrageenan induced acute inflammation in rats. METHODS: In-vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated for extracts against four Gram positive and four Gram negative bacteria by using cylinder plate assay. Hydro-alcoholic extract (70% v/v ethanol) at 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg doses and methanolic, ethyl acetate and hexane extracts at doses 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg were tested for anti-inflammatory activity in Carrageenan induced rat paw oedema model and paw thickness was measured every one hour up to 6 hrs. RESULTS: All extracts of R. tetraphylla root bark showed good zone of inhibition against tested bacterial strains. In Carrageenan induced inflammation model, hydro-alcoholic and methanolic extract of R. tetraphylla root bark at three different doses produced significant (P<0.001) reduction when compared to vehicle treated control group and hexane, ethyl acetate extracts. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study extracts of R. tetraphylla root bark shows good in-vitro antibacterial activity and in-vivo anti-inflammatory activity in rats.

CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) phosphor was prepared at furnace temperatures as low as 550°C by a solution combustion method. The formation of crystalline CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) was confirmed by powder X-Ray diffraction pattern. The prepared phosphor was characterized by SEM, FT-IR and photoluminescence techniques. Photoluminescence measurements indicated that emission spectrum is dominated by the red peak located at 618 nm due to the (5)D(0)-(7)F(2) electric dipole transition of Eu(3+) ions. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the centres responsible for the thermoluminescence (TL) peaks. Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0126 is identified as an O(-) ion while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0060 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons). The F(+) centre appears to correlate with the observed high temperature TL peak in CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) phosphor.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurological disorder resulting from both genetic and environmental factors with the latter being particularly important for the sporadic form of the disease. As such, diets rich in saturated fatty acids and alcohol, and deficient in antioxidants and vitamins appear to promote the onset of the disease, while diets rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants, and wine likely suppress its onset. In addition, evidence suggests that diets rich in polyphenols and some spices suppress the onset of AD by scavenging free radicals and preventing oxidative damage. Metal ions are known to catalyze the production of free radicals and induce mental retardation or dementia, and several studies have also identified metals such as Pb, Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in AD pathogenesis. While specific metal chelators have been tested for therapy, they have not been very successful, probably due to their late administration, i.e., after brain damage has been triggered. Since several dietary polyphenols are known to chelate metals, their routine use may also be protective against the onset of AD. In this review, we summarize beneficial dietary techniques in the fight against AD.
