INTRODUCTION: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) is the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome and the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. Given that there is no pharmacological treatment for MASLD, it is imperative to understand whether lifestyle modifications may improve biochemical and pathological outcomes. One commonly proposed dietary modification is the Mediterranean diet; however, vegetarianism may also be a promising intervention. Vegetarianism has been shown to be associated with reduced morbidity and mortality in metabolic syndrome outcomes in coronary artery disease and diabetes; however, the relationship between vegetarian diet and MASLD is less clear. In this scoping review, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the current body of evidence related to a vegetarian diet and MASLD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The aim of this scoping review is to describe and summarise the current body of evidence related to MASLD and a vegetarian diet. This review will be conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework. The literature review will be conducted using the following databases: SCOPUS, Web of Science, CINAHL-Plus, Cochrane Library and Medline. No restriction will be made on publication date. Included studies will encompass clinical trials and observational designs that examine effects or association of vegetarian diet in adults (≥16 years) and report on the incidence, prevalence or progression of MASLD. Grey literature, non-human studies and articles focusing on changes in a specific food or nutraceutical will be excluded. Articles must have an English-language abstract available to be considered for inclusion. Screening and data extraction will be conducted by two independent reviewers. The findings will be summarised with descriptive statistics. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Approval from a medical ethics committee is not required for this review. Once the review is complete, the findings will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Introducción La ludificación consiste en emplear el juego en contextos no lúdicos. Su uso en la rehabilitación motora de patologías neurológicas está muy extendido, pero sobre todo en pacientes adultos. El objetivo de esta revisión fue describir el uso de la ludificación en los tratamientos de rehabilitación en niños y adolescentes con afectación neuromotora. Métodos Se realizó una revisión sistemática de ensayos clínicos en diferentes bases de datos: Medline (a través de Pubmed), Scielo, SCOPUS, Dialnet, Cinahl y PEDro de la literatura científica publicada hasta la fecha siguiendo el protocolo PRISMA. La calidad metodológica de los estudios identificados se evaluó a través de la escala PEDro. Resultados De un total de 469 estudios localizados se seleccionaron 10 ensayos clínicos que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Se analizaron los sistemas de ludificación utilizados como parte del tratamiento rehabilitador en distintas afecciones neuromotoras en niños y adolescentes. La parálisis cerebral fue la afección con mayor número de estudios (n = 6), seguida del trastorno del desarrollo de la coordinación (n = 3). También se estudió la alteración del equilibrio y coordinación por causa neurológica (n = 1). Conclusión El uso de la ludificación en rehabilitación aporta beneficios al tratamiento convencional de las alteraciones neuromotoras en niños y adolescentes, siendo el incremento de la motivación y de la adherencia terapéutica los que mayor consenso han alcanzado entre autores. Fuerza, equilibrio, funcionalidad y coordinación son otras variables analizadas que, si bien sugieren mejoras, necesitarían futuras investigaciones para determinar una óptima dosificación. (AU)


Introduction Gamification consists of the use of games in non-playful contexts. It is widely employed in the motor rehabilitation of neurological diseases, but mainly in adult patients. The objective of this review was to describe the use of gamification in the rehabilitation of children and adolescents with neuromotor impairment. Methods We performed a systematic review of clinical trials published to date on the MEDLINE (PubMed), Scielo, SCOPUS, Dialnet, CINAHL, and PEDro databases, following the PRISMA protocol. The methodological quality of the studies identified was assessed using the PEDro scale. Results From a total of 469 studies, 10 clinical trials met the inclusion criteria. We analysed the gamification systems used as part of the rehabilitation treatment of different neuromotor conditions in children and adolescents. Cerebral palsy was the most frequently studied condition (6 studies), followed by developmental coordination disorder (3), and neurological impairment of balance and coordination (1). Conclusion The use of gamification in rehabilitation is helpful in the conventional treatment of neuromotor disorders in children and adolescents, with increased motivation and therapeutic adherence being the benefits with the greatest consensus among authors. While strength, balance, functional status, and coordination also appear to improve, future research should aim to determine an optimal dosage. (AU)

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Hippotherapy (HPOT) and hippotherapy simulators (SHPOT) are used in children with cerebral palsy to achieve their maximum functionality and independence. The aim is to find out if HPOT and SHPOT produce the same effects on balance, gross motor function, and postural control in children under 18 years old with cerebral palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The keywords used were: hippotherapy, equine-assisted therapy and cerebral palsy. The databases used were PeDro, Scopus, LILACS, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CINAHL Complete (Ebsco). Studies were included if they were randomized clinical trials that studied the effect of HPOT and/or SHPOT on the variables mentioned in these patients. RESULTS: Four studies assessed balance, 4 studied gross motor function, and 2 investigated postural control. Both HPOT and SHPOT produced benefits in all of them. CONCLUSIONS: According to the studied variables both interventions produce similar improvements. Although, they increase with HPOT possibly due to greater sensory stimulation.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen that has a high propensity to develop antibiotic resistance, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains is a major concern for global health. The mortality rate associated with infections caused by this microorganism is significant, especially those caused by multidrug-resistant strains. The antibiotics used to treat these infections include quinolones, aminoglycosides, colistin, and ß-lactams. However, novel combinations of ß-lactams-ß-lactamase inhibitors and cefiderocol offer advantages over other members of their family due to their better activity against certain resistance mechanisms. Selecting the appropriate empiric antibiotic treatment requires consideration of the patient's clinical entity, comorbidities, and risk factors for multidrug-resistant pathogen infections, and local epidemiological data. Optimizing antibiotic pharmacokinetics, controlling the source of infection, and appropriate collection of samples are crucial for successful treatment. In the future, the development of alternative treatments and strategies, such as antimicrobial peptides, new antibiotics, phage therapy, vaccines, and colonization control, holds great promise for the management of P. aeruginosa infections.

New natural reducing agents with a lower negative impact on the environment and with a high antimicrobial potential are required for the process of obtaining silver nanoparticles through the chemical reduction method. The use of plant extracts can be a fast track in the formation of nanoparticles. In this case, organic compounds such as terpenes, flavonoids, enzymes, proteins, and cofactors present in plants act as reducing agents for nanomaterials. This research evaluated the antimicrobial property of silver nanoparticles from extracts of Crescentia cujete L. The presence of quercetin (flavonoid) was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was established by green synthesis; the size and morphology of the nanomaterials were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The antimicrobial capacity was studied by two analysis methods: modified culture medium and surface seeding. The presence of quercetin (26.55 mg L-1) in the crude extract of Crescentia cujete L., identified by HPLC, was evidenced. Nanoparticle formation was spherical, with an average size of 250 ± 3 and 460 ± 6 nm. Microbiological cultures with treatment showed 94% microbial inhibition. It was concluded that the Crescentia cujete L., leaves shoed an acceptable concentration of quercetin to be used as a useful adjuvant to enhance the reduction of NPs synthesis. The nanoparticles produced by green synthesis proved to have a positive effect to combat pathogenic microorganisms.

Substances with modulatory capabilities on certain aspects of human cognition have been revered as nootropics from the dawn of time. The plant kingdom provides most of the currently available nootropics of natural origin. Here, in this systematic review, we aim to provide state-of-the-art information regarding proven and unproven effects of plant-derived nootropics (PDNs) on human cognition in conditions of health and disease. Six independent searches, one for each neurocognitive domain (NCD), were performed in parallel using three independent scientific library databases: PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus. Only scientific studies and systematic reviews with humans published between January 2000 and November 2021 were reviewed, and 256 papers were included. Ginkgo biloba was the most relevant nootropic regarding perceptual and motor functions. Bacopa monnieri improves language, learning and memory. Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) modulates anxiety and social-related cognitions. Caffeine enhances attention and executive functions. Together, the results from the compiled studies highlight the nootropic effects and the inconsistencies regarding PDNs that require further research.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/10408398.2021.2021137.

This work explores the electrospinnability of low-sulfonate Kraft lignin (LSL)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and the ability of the different micro- and nano-architectures generated to structure castor oil. LSL/PVP solutions were prepared at different concentrations (8-15 wt%) and LSL:PVP ratios (90:10-0:100) and physico-chemically and rheologically characterized. The morphology of electrospun nanostructures mainly depends on the rheological properties of the solution. Electrosprayed nanoparticles or micro-sized particles connected by thin filaments were obtained from solutions with low LSL/PVP concentrations and/or high LSL:PVP ratios, whereas beaded or bead-free nanofibers were produced by increasing concentration and/or decreasing LSL:PVP ratio, due to enhanced extensional viscoelastic properties and non-Newtonian characteristics. Electrospun LSL/PVP nanofibers are able to form oleogels by simply dispersing them into castor oil at concentrations between 10 and 30 wt%. The rheological properties of the oleogels may be tailored by modifying the LSL:PVP ratio and nanofibers content. The potential application of these oleogels as bio-based lubricants was also explored in a tribological cell. Satisfactory friction and wear results are achieved when using oleogels structured by nanofibers mats with enhanced gel-like properties as lubricants. Overall, electrospinning of lignin/PVP solutions can be proposed as a simple and effective method to produce nanofibers for oil structuring.

Ghrelin (Gr) is an orexigenic peptide that acts via its specific receptor, GHSR-1a distributed throughout the brain, being mainly enriched in pituitary, cortex and hippocampus (Hp) modulating a variety of brain functions. Behavioral, electrophysiological and biochemical evidence indicated that Gr modulates the excitability and the synaptic plasticity in Hp. The present experiments were designed in order to extend the knowledge about the Gr effect upon structural synaptic plasticity since morphological and quantitative changes in spine density after Gr administration were analyzed "in vitro" and "in vivo". The results show that Gr administered to hippocampal cultures or stereotactically injected in vivo to Thy-1 mice increases the density of dendritic spines (DS) being the mushroom type highly increased in secondary and tertiary extensions. Spines classified as thin type were increased particularly in primary extensions. Furthermore, we show that Gr enhances selectively the expression of BDNF-mRNA species.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is especially prevalent in developing countries: incidence and prevalence rates are at least twice as high as in our setting. Epilepsy is also highly stigmatised, and few resources are available for its management. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a descriptive observational study in December 2016, distributing a questionnaire on epilepsy management to healthcare professionals from 3 different hospitals in Cameroon. Data are presented as means or percentages. RESULTS: Thirty-eight healthcare providers participated in the survey; 42.1% were female and mean age was 40.1 years (range, 22-62). Regarding the causes of epilepsy, 68.4% considered it a psychiatric condition, 34.2% a degenerative disease, 28.9% a hereditary condition, and 21.1% secondary to infection. In terms of management, 23.7% considered that thorough clinical history is sufficient to establish a diagnosis. Only 60.5% considered the clinical interview to be important for diagnosis, 52.6% considered EEG to be necessary, and 28.9% considered laboratory analyses to be important. Only 13.2% mentioned neuroimaging. In the treatment of pregnant women, 36.8% recommended folic acid supplementation, 65.8% believed antiepileptic treatment should be maintained, and only 39.5% recommended breastfeeding. Concerning treatment, the participants knew a mean of 2 antiepileptic drugs: phenobarbital was the best known (81.6%), followed by carbamazepine (55.3%) and valproic acid (28.9%). CONCLUSIONS: There is a need among healthcare professionals for education and information on the disease, its diagnosis, and management options, in order to optimise management and consequently improve patients' quality of life.

Cisplatin is an effective chemotherapeutic drug whose clinical use and efficacy are limited by its nephrotoxicity, which affects mainly the renal tubules and vasculature. It accumulates in proximal and distal epithelial tubule cells and causes oxidative stress-mediated cell death and malfunction. Consequently, many antioxidants have been tested for their capacity to prevent cisplatin nephrotoxicity. In this study, we made a systematic review of the literature and meta-analyzed 152 articles, which tested the nephroprotective effect of isolated compounds or mixtures of natural origin on cisplatin nephrotoxicity in preclinical models. This meta-analysis identified the most effective candidates and examined the efficacy obtained by antioxidants administered by the oral and intraperitoneal routes. By comparing with a recent, similar meta-analysis performed on clinical studies, this article identifies a disconnection between preclinical and clinical research, and contextualizes, discusses, and integrates the existing preclinical information toward the optimized selection of candidates to be further explored (clinical level). Despite proved efficacy, this article discusses the barriers limiting the clinical development of natural mixtures, such as those in extracts from Calendula officinalis flowers and Heliotropium eichwaldii roots. On the contrary, isolated compounds are more straightforward candidates, among which arjunolic acid and quercetin stand out in this meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Mexico, 80% women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at locally advanced stages and are treated with concomitant chemoradiotherapy. The treatment modality and catabolic state confer a nutritional risk. The present study aimed to thoroughly evaluate the nutritional status and change in body composition of locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) patients throughout treatment. METHODS: An observational prospective study, carried out at the Mexican National Cancer Institute, included 55 LACC patients. Nutritional status was evaluated before, during and after treatment, using anthropometric, dietary and biochemical measurements. Body composition was analysed using computed tomography images obtained at the time of diagnosis and approximately 4 months after treatment completion. Clinical outcomes were associated with changes in body composition. RESULTS: At the time of diagnosis, no patients were clinically malnourished, although 33.3% presented sarcopenia and most were overweight; by the end of treatment, 69% became clinically malnourished and 58% were sarcopenic. Average weight loss was 7.4 kg (P = 0.001). Adequacy of energy intake was reduced to 54%, obtained predominantly from carbohydrates. By the week 9, 62.8% patients became anemic and 34.5% had low albumin levels. Body composition analysis revealed that patients lost both, muscle and adipose tissues, although 27% patients were muscle depleted by the end of treatment. Patients who lost ≥10% skeletal muscle presented a higher tumour recurrence (hazard ratio = 2.957, P = 0.006) and a tendency towards diminished overall survival (hazard ratio = 2.572, not significant). CONCLUSIONS: The nutritional status of cervical cancer patients deteriorates during treatment with concomitant chemoradiotherapy and, most importantly, muscle loss impacts the clinical outcome of patients.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the immediate effect on dynamic and static balance of a manual protocol of plantar stimulation in healthy subjects. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Of the 144 healthy and physically active volunteers recruited, 98 subjects participated. Subjects were randomly assigned and allocated to the experimental group (EG) (n= 50), in which a 10-min manual protocol of plantar stimulation was applied on the right foot, or to the control group (CG) (n= 48). The change scores of the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and the Unipedal Stance Test (UPST) were used to assess the immediate effect of the protocol on dynamic and static balance, respectively. RESULTS: In the dynamic balance, a group effect was found in the anterior direction, posteromedial direction and composite scores of the mSEBT when groups were compared by limb. Changes in the posteromedial direction of both limbs (right limb: p= 0.002, left limb: p= 0.05) and composite score of the right limb (p= 0.009) were significantly greater in the EG versus the CG. Non-significant results were found in the static balance (UPST time). CONCLUSIONS: The application of a 10-minute manual stimulation protocol without joint mobilization, addressed to stimulate the plantar cutaneous mechanoreceptors, could elicit benefits on dynamic balance. This improvement was observed bilaterally even though only one plantar surface was stimulated. As balance deficits may impair functional movements and regular training in sports, this intervention aims to ameliorate dynamic balancing ability could improve the functional recovery of sport gestures.

The hypothalamus determinates metabolic processes in liver through endocrine and autonomic control. Hypothalamic neuropeptides, such as thyrotropin releasing hormone or vasopressin, have been involved in liver metabolism. The thyroid status influences metabolic processes including liver metabolism in modulating those hypothalamic peptides whose functional status is regulated in part by aminopeptidase activities. In order to obtain data for a possible coordinated interaction between hypothalamus, plasma and liver, of some aminopeptidase activities that may partially reflect the hydrolysis of those peptides, pyroglutamyl- (pGluAP) and cystinyl- (CysAP) beta-naphthylamide hydrolyzing activities were determined fluorimetrically, both in their soluble and membrane-bound forms, in eu- hypo- and hyperthyroid adult male rats. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were induced with daily subcutaneous injections of tetraiodothyronine (300 µg/kg/day) or with 0.03% methimazole in drinking water for 6 weeks. Results demonstrated significant changes depending on the type of enzyme and the thyroid status. The most striking changes were observed for CysAP in liver where it was reduced in hypothyroidism and increased in hyperthyroidism. Significant intra- and inter-tissue correlations were observed. While there were positive inter-tissue correlations between liver, plasma and hypothalamus in eu-and hypothyroid rats, a negative correlation between hypothalamus and liver was observed in hyperthyroidism. These results suggest the influence of thyroid hormones and an interactive role for these activities in the control of liver metabolism. The present data also suggest a role for CysAP and pGluAP activities in liver function linked to their activities in hypothalamus.

Objetivo. Evaluar el efecto a largo plazo de una intervención nutricional en pacientes hospitalizados con insuficiencia cardiaca (IC) y desnutridos. Métodos. Un total de 120 pacientes hospitalizados por IC y desnutridos fueron aleatorizados a recibir o no una intervención nutricional individualizada durante 6 meses. El evento primario fue el combinado de muerte por cualquier causa o reingreso por IC. Se realizó un análisis por intención de tratar y se evaluó el efecto de la intervención a los 24 meses. Resultados. El evento combinado ocurrió en el 47,5% de los pacientes del grupo de intervención y en el 73,8% del grupo control (hazard ratio: 0,45; intervalo de confianza del 95%: 0,28-0,72; p=0,001). Fallecieron el 39% en el grupo de intervención y el 59% en el grupo control (hazard ratio: 0,53; intervalo de confianza del 95%: 0,31-0,89; p=0,017). Conclusión. Una intervención nutricional en pacientes hospitalizados por IC que están desnutridos mantiene su beneficio pronóstico en el seguimiento a largo plazo (AU)


Objective. To assess the long-term effect of nutritional intervention on malnourished, hospitalised patients with heart failure (HF). Methods. A total of 120 malnourished patients hospitalized for HF were randomised to undergo (or not) an individual nutritional intervention for 6 months. The primary event was the combination of all-cause death and readmission for HF. We performed an intent-to-treat analysis and assessed the effect of the intervention at 24 months. Results. The combined event occurred in 47.5% of the intervention group and in 73.8% of the control group (hazard ratio: 0.45; 95% confidence interval: 0.28-0.72; P=.001). Thirty-nine percent of the intervention group and 59% of the control group died (hazard ratio: 0.53; 95% confidence interval: 0.31-0.89; P=.017). Conclusion. A nutritional intervention for malnourished patients hospitalised for HF maintains its prognostic benefit in the long-term follow-up (AU)

CONTEXT: Thoracic manipulation decreases pain and disability. However, when such manipulation is contraindicated, the use of other manual techniques based on the regional interdependence of the thoracic spine, upper ribs, and shoulders is an alternative approach. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to investigate the immediate changes resulting from 3 manual therapy treatments on spinal mobility, flexibility, comfort, and pain perception in patients with persistent, nonspecific back pain as well as changes in their sense of physical well-being and their perception of change after treatment. DESIGN: The study was a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. SETTING: The study took place in the Department of Physiotherapy of the Faculty of Physiotherapy at the University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain). PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 112 individuals from the community-56.6% female, with a mean age of 21.8 ± 0.2 y-who had persistent, nonspecific back pain. INTERVENTION: Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups, receiving (1) neurolymphatic therapy (NL group), (2) articulatory spinal manual therapy (AS group), or (3) articulatory costal manual therapy (AC group). OUTCOME MEASURES: Cervical mobility, lumbar flexibility, comfort, pain perception, and physical well-being were assessed at baseline and immediately postintervention. Perception of change was evaluated postintervention. RESULTS: Between baseline and postintervention, the AC group showed a significant increase in cervical flexion (P = .010), whereas the NL and AS groups improved in lumbar flexibility, P = .047 and P = .012, respectively. For that period, significant changes were found in lumbar comfort for the AS group (P < .001) and the NL group (P < .026) and in thoracic comfort (P < .001) for the AC group. All groups improved in physical well-being and pain perception (P < .05). Changes in thoracic comfort, lumbar comfort, and physical well-being differed among the groups, with some differences being statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: All treatments improved pain perception and increased physical well-being. The NL and AS treatments were more effective in lumbar flexibility, the AC treatment in cervical flexion and thoracic comfort, and the NL treatment in lumbar comfort.

El manejo inefectivo del régimen terapéutico es uno de los diagnósticos que con más frecuencia se le presenta al profesional enfermero durante su desarrollo profesional. Es fundamental que el enfermero desarrolle un plan de cuidados de forma óptima para que el paciente adquiera una correcta adhesión al tratamiento terapéutico y mejore su calidad de vida, así como prevenir las posibles complicaciones ante el no cumplimiento de tal tratamiento. Atendimos en nuestra unidad a un paciente de 56 años con diagnóstico de carcinoma infiltrante de vejiga que iba a ser intervenido de cistectomía. Controla su diabetes sin seguir con el plan terapéutico de su médico de familia, tampoco ha conseguido dejar su hábito tabáquico. Esto nos pone alerta de los posibles problemas posquirúrgicos y al alta


Nursing staff is exposed to ineffective management of therapeutic regimen during their professional development. It is essential for the nursing staff to develop an optimum self-care plan so that the patient can adhere to treatment and improve his quality of life. This will help the patient to anticipate possible complications related to non-compliance for treatment of the disease. A 56 years old patient with an infiltrating bladder cancer was admitted to our unit. The patient poorly controls diabetes, does not follow an appropriate treatment plan and has not stopped smoking. This is putting the patient at great danger due to post-operative complications and problems as a result of discharge from hospital

Paciente de 36 años con esterilidad primaria de 2 años. Tras estudio completo se decide donación de ovocitos. En los controles se observa un grosor endometrial adelgazado. Con el diagnóstico de endometrio refractario, se realiza un tratamiento con estrógenos a altas dosis, vitamina E y pentoxifilina durante 3 meses. Como el grosor endometrial no aumenta, asociamos AAS. Finalmente se administra intraútero plasma autólogo rico en plaquetas. A las 96 horas se observa un endometrio de 7,3 mm, transfiriéndose dos embriones vitrificados, resultando en un aborto bioquímico. Discusión: El tratamiento médico del endometrio refractario constituye un reto. Existen numerosas opciones terapéuticas, hormonales y no hormonales. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estas opciones están escasamente evaluadas por lo que se requieren de estudios mejor diseñados y con mayor tamaño muestral (AU)


36 years old patient with primary sterility of 2 years. An oocyte donation was decided after the study. An endometrial thickness slimmed was observed in different visits. With the diagnosis of refractory endometrium, a treatment was performed with high-dose estrogen, vitamin E and pentoxifylline for 3 months. As the endometrial thickness did not increase, we associated AAS. Finally intrauterine platelet-rich autologous plasma was administered. At 96 hours 7.3 mm of endometrium was observed, two vitrified embryos transferred, resulting in a biochemical abortion. Discussion: The medical treatment of refractory endometrium is a challenge. There are many therapies, hormonal and nonhormonal options. However, most of these options are poorly evaluated so they require better designed studies and larger sample size (AU)

Angiodysplasias are one of the reasons of gastrointestinal bleeding, whose origin is usually due to vascular malformations. There are different types of therapies for angiodysplasia such as endoscopic, angiographic and pharmacological techniques. Among the last ones, there is little variety of effective drugs to treat the disease. We describe the therapeutic failure with thalidomide in a male with recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding due to angiodysplasias. A thorough diagnostic work-up, including gastroscopy, enteroscopy, angiography and capsule endoscopy were performed. Despite treatment with high-dose somatostatin analogues and oral iron, the patient continued bleeding. The patient was administered then thalidomide for three months with no clinical response. Thalidomide had to be withdrawn owing to adverse effects (AU)


Una de las causas de sangrado a nivel gastrointestinal son las angiodisplasias, cuyo origen suele deberse a malformaciones a nivel vascular. Existen distintos tipos de terapias para las angiodisplasias, como son las técnicas endoscópicas, angiográficas y farmacológicas. Dentro de estas últimas existe poca variedad de fármacos efectivos para dicha patología. Se describe el fracaso terapéutico con talidomida en un varón con sangrado gastrointestinal recurrente debido a angiodisplasias. Se le realiza un diagnóstico completo, incluyendo gastroscopia, enteroscopia, angiografía y cápsula endoscópica. A pesar del tratamiento con análogos de la somatostatina a altas dosis y hierro oral, el paciente continuó sangrando. El paciente recibió talidomida durante tres meses sin respuesta clínica. La talidomida tuvo que ser retirada debido a los efectos adversos y a la falta de eficacia (AU)
