RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Piglet mortality is a real concern to the pig farmers. The major cause is due to the late maturation of the immune system and dietary changes in postweaned piglets. The potential role of probiotic and zinc in the stimulation of the immune system is well established. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate alterations of T and B cells in the small intestine after dietary inclusion of probiotic and zinc in pre and post-weaned piglets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 18 healthy Large White Yorkshire (LWY) piglets, irrespective of sex obtained from 3 litters at the age-group of 20, 30 and 60 days. They were divided into a control group fed with basal diet and a treatment group fed with probiotic and zinc supplement along with the basal diet, consisting of three animals in each group. The piglets were weaned at 28 days of age. After sacrificing the animals at day 20, 30 and 60 from both the groups, the abdominal cavity was opened and small intestinal tissue samples were collected, processed and stained by indirect immunofluorescence technique. The slides were evaluated under the fluorescent light microscope. The data were statistically analysed. RESULTS: The different T and B cell subsets were recorded in the lining epithelium, core of villus, crypt area of lamina propria and Peyer's patch area. The number of CD4+, CD8+, IgA+ and IgM+ cells was higher in the treated piglets than the control group of animals, irrespective of segments of intestine and age-group. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the dietary supplementation of probiotic and zinc was found to be good additives as they can stimulate the immune response in piglets, especially during the critical early post-weaning period.

RESUMEN

A detailed (31)P (I = 1/2) and (75)As (I = 3/2) NMR study on polycrystalline CeFeAs(1-x)P(x)O alloys is presented. The magnetism of CeFeAsO changes drastically upon P substitution on the As site. CeFePO is a heavy fermion system without long-range order whereas CeFeAsO exhibits an Fe 3d SDW type of ordering accompanied by a structural transition from tetragonal (TT) to orthorhombic (OT) structure. Furthermore, Ce 4f(1) orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) at low temperature. At the critical concentration where the Fe magnetism is diminished the Ce-Ce interaction changes to a ferromagnetic (FM) type of ordering. Three representative samples of the CeFeAs(1-x)P(x)O (x = 0.05, 0.3 and 0.9) series are systematically investigated. (1) For the x = 0.05 alloy a drastic change of the linewidth at 130 K indicates the AFM-SDW type of ordering of Fe and the structural change from the TT to the OT phase. The linewidth roughly measures the internal field in the ordered state and the transition is most likely first order. The small and nearly constant shift from (31)P and (75)As NMR suggests the presence of competing hyperfine interactions between the nuclear spins and the 4f and 3d ions of Ce and Fe. (2) For the x = 0.3 alloy, the evolution of the Fe-SDW type of order takes place at around 70 K corroborating the results of bulk measurement and µSR. Here we found evidence for phase separation of paramagnetic and magnetic SDW phases. (3) In contrast to the heavy fermion CeFePO for the x = 0.9 alloy a phase transition is found at 2 K. The field-dependent NMR shift gives evidence of FM ordering. Above the ordering the spin-lattice relaxation rate (31)(1/T(1)) shows unconventional, non-Korringa-like behaviour which indicates a complex interplay of Kondo and FM fluctuations.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Acute urinary retention (AUR) is one of the commonest causes of admission in urology ward and successful voiding with alpha-blockers has been reported. However, long-term efficacy of Alfuzosin, following an episode of AUR is lacking. This is a continuation of our earlier reported study. We report the results of a 4 year follow-up on patients who were on Alfuzosin SR 5 mg BD, following resumption of voiding after an episode of AUR. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 33 patients voided successfully following AUR in our original study. These patients continued on Alfuzosin SR 5 mg BD and were assessed at 2 and 4 years. Symptomatic assessment was performed with IPSS and QOL symptom score and objective assessment was with urinary flow rate and post void residual volume. Patients who continued to deteriorate symptomatically and objectively or developed further AUR were listed for surgery. RESULTS: Out of 33 patients, 28 patients were followed up at 2 years (three patients died due to various medical reasons and two did not attend for follow-up). Nineteen patients (68%) underwent transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) for severe lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) . The mean peak flow rate at 2 years was 8.4 ml/s and the mean residual volume was 112 ml. Ten patients attended for follow up at 4 years. The mean flow rate was 5.17 ml/s and the mean post-void residual volume was 101 ml. Four patients underwent TURP for severe outflow symptoms. At 4 years follow up 24 out of 30 patients (80%) on Alfuzosin needed TURP. CONCLUSIONS: These data do not support the long term use of alpha-blockers in patients who voided successfully after acute urinary retention.

RESUMEN

The present prospective study was carried out to observe the changing trends in the clinical pattern and multidrug resistance in typhoid fever. Fever was the main presenting feature. Other associated features were headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, altered sensorium and jaundice. Out of 78 patients, one patient died due to enteric encephalopathy and other due to septicaemia with peripheral circulatory failure. 12 patients responded to chloramphenicol and gentamycin. 51 patients responded to ciprofloxacin, while remaining 9 patients responded to combination of cefotaxime and amikacin. Three patients showed in vitro resistance to ciprofloxacin and two out of these also showed no response in vivo. This study re-emphasises the changing pattern, prolonged course and role of quinolones especially ciprofloxacin in the management of drug resistant typhoid fever, but at the same time indicates that ciprofloxacin is not the drug of choice in all cases of typhoid fever and resistance to it may be seen in some cases, where other drugs have to be used.

RESUMEN

Serum levels of calcium and phosphorous were evaluated in patients with carcinoma of the cervix between pre- and post-menopausal women and compared the same with various normal female populations of different physiological status, involving premenopause, postmenopause and third trimester of pregnancy. Hypercalcemia was noted both in premenopausal and postmenopausal cervix cancer patients although this is more marked in the latter. No definite relationship was observed between serum calcium and phosphorous (inorganic) level. The discordance in serum calcium level assumes significance in the light of hormonal status between the pre- and postmenopausal state of cancer patients.
