RESUMEN

This study evaluates the use of engineered biochar as a heterogeneous solid acid catalyst for transesterification of algal oil derived from a native microalgal consortium. Biochar derived from sugarcane bagasse, coconut shell, corncob and peanut shell were evaluated for catalytic activity following surface modification. Peanut shell pyrolyzed at 400 °C with the sulfonic acid density of 0.837 mmol/g having 6.616 m2/g surface area was selected for efficient catalysis. The efficiency of transesterification was evaluated with 1-7 wt% catalyst loading, methanol: oil ratio of 6:1 to 30:1 at 55-85 °C over 2-8 h. Biodiesel yield of 94.91% was obtained with 5 wt% catalyst loading, MeOH: oil ratio of 20:1 at 65 °C after 4 h. Spectral analysis of algal biodiesel showed the presence of functional groups corresponding to esters. GC-MS analysis revealed the prominent presence of palmitic and oleic acids, further advocating the suitability of the technology for commercial application.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A multiple micronutrient-fortified drink could be an effective strategy to combating micronutrient deficiencies in school going children. To assess the efficacy of a multiple micronutrient-fortified drink in reducing iron deficiency (ID), ID anemia (IDA), anemia and improving micronutrient status among schoolchildren with low iron stores. The study employed a school-based, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Schoolchildren with low serum ferritin (SF <20 µg/l) (n=246), aged 6-12 years were randomly assigned to receive either a multi-micronutrient fortified or an unfortified identical control drink. The drinks were provided 6 days/week for 8 weeks. Anthropometric and biochemical assessments were taken at baseline and endline. RESULTS: Study groups at baseline were comparable, and compliance to the intervention was similar. The overall prevalence of ID, IDA and anemia was 64%, 19% and 24%, respectively. The prevalence of ID, IDA, vitamin C and vitamin B12 deficiencies significantly reduced by 42%, 18%, 21% and 5%, respectively, in the intervention arm (P<0.01) as compared with the control arm at the end of the study. Similarly, the concentration of hemoglobin, SF, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin C and body iron stores were significantly higher in the intervention arm in comparison to the control arm (P<0.001). Red cell folate levels also improved significantly in the intervention arm (P=0.04), however, serum zinc status did not change in either of the study arms. Children who had received the fortified drink had significantly lower odds of being ID (0.15; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.09-0.27), IDA (0.14; 95% CI: 0.04-0.52), vitamin B12 deficient (0.36; 95% CI: 0.18-0.73) and vitamin C deficient (0.24; 95% CI: 0.13-0.46), after adjusting for baseline age, gender and weight. CONCLUSIONS: The multi micronutrient-fortified drink was efficacious in reducing the prevalence of ID, IDA, vitamin C and vitamin B12 deficiency and improved micronutrient status in schoolchildren.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To identify the larvicidal activities of silver nano particles synthesised with Rhizophora mucronata (R. mucronata) leaf extract against the larvae of Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Cx. quinquefasciatus). METHODS: In vitro larvicidal activities such as LC(50) and LC(90) were assessed for the Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus larval species. Further, characterisation such as UV, XRD, FTIR and AFM analysis were carried out for the synthesised silver nano particles. RESULTS: The LC(50) value of the synthesised silver nano particle was identified as 0.585 and 0.891 mg/L for Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae respectively. Further, the LC(90) values are also identified as 2.615 and 6.291 mg/L for Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus species respectively. The synthesised silver nanoparticles have maximum absorption at 420 nm with the average size of 60-95 nm. The XRD data showed 2θ intense values with various degrees such as 37.10°, 47.66°, 63.97° and 70.01°. The FTIR data showed prominent peaks in (3 426.89, 2 925.49, 2 869.56, 2 346.95, 1 631.49, 1 031.73, 669.18 and 455.12) different ranges. CONCLUSIONS: The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with leaf aqueous extract of R. mucronata provides potential source for the larvicidal activity against mosquito borne diseases.
