O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o potencial organogenético de entrenós, discos foliares, e raízes de Brosimum gaudichaudii utilizando 12 diferentes combinações dos fitorreguladores 6-benzilaminopurina e ácido naftaleno acético, em meio MS (diluído à metade), sólido (6,5 g de ágar), e com 20 g.L-1 de sacarose. Independentemente das combinações hormonais testadas verificou-se a formação de calos friáveis (2 a 20 mm de diâmetro) em 90% dos entrenós usados como explantes. No entanto, os tratamentos testados não foram capazes induzir calos ou gemas em raízes e em discos foliares. O estudo anatômico revelou a formação de meristemóides nas regiões mais externa e mais interna dos calos. Os resultados obtidos poderão servir de base para novos testes de indução de calos na espécie.


The objective of this research was to evaluate the organogenic potential of internodes, leaf discs and roots of Brosimum gaudichaudii using 12 different combinations of the plant growth regulators 6-benzylaminopurine and naphthalene acetic acid in MS medium (half strength), solid medium (6.5 g agar) and sucrose medium (20 g.L-1). Regardless the hormonal combination tested, we observed the formation of friable calluses (2 - 20 mm wide) in 90% of the internode explants. However, the treatments were not able to induce callus or buds on roots and leaf discs. The anatomical analysis revealed meristemoid formation in the outer and inner regions of the calluses. The results may serve as the basis for further testing of callus induction in this species.

OBJECTIVE: Conflicting reports of P200 amplitude and latency in schizophrenia have suggested that this component is increased, reduced or does not differ from healthy subjects. A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to accurately describe P200 deficits in auditory oddball tasks in schizophrenia. METHODS: A systematic search identified 20 studies which were meta-analyzed. Effect size (ES) estimates were obtained: P200 amplitude and latency for target and standard tones at midline electrodes. RESULTS: The ES obtained for amplitude (Cz) for standard and target stimuli indicate significant effects in opposite directions: standard stimuli elicit smaller P200 in patients (d = -0.36; 95% CI [-0.26, -0.08]); target stimuli elicit larger P200 in patients (d = 0.48; 95% CI [0.16, 0.82]). A similar effect occurs for latency at Cz, which is shorter for standards (d = -0.32; 95% CI [-0.54, -0.10]) and longer for targets (d = 0.42; 95% CI [0.23, 0.62]). Meta-regression analyses revealed that samples with more males show larger ES for amplitude of target stimuli, while the amount of medication was negatively associated with the ES for the latency of standards. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained suggest that claims of reduced or augmented P200 in schizophrenia based on the sole examination of standard or target stimuli fail to consider the stimulus effect. SIGNIFICANCE: Quantification of effects for standard and target stimuli is a required first step to understand the nature of P200 deficits in schizophrenia.

Thirty secondary plant substances were detected in various extracts of the leaves, fruits, stem and bark of Caraipadensifolia Mart. Phenolic compounds were preliminarily identified and quantitated by HPLC-ESI-MS and the structures of the compounds, purified by semi-preparative HPLC, were further characterized by nano-ESI-MS-MS. The presence of gallic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, methyl gallate, p-coumaric acid quinate, epicatechin, procaynidin dimer B(2), procyanidin trimer C(1), syringic acid, 1,2,3,6-tetragallate glucoside, 1,3,4,6-tetragallate glucoside, corilagin, ellagic acid, methyl ellagic acid rhamnoside, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside, two apigenin-C-glycosides (vitexin and isovitexin) and two luteolin-C-glycosides (orientin and isoorientin) are reported in this species for the first time. In addition, the previously reported following terpenoids, lupeol, lupenone, betulinic acid, betulin, friedelin and a previously non-characterized terpenoid in this species, friedelinol were identified and quantitated by GC-MS. A previously identified sterol was beta-sitosterol along with stigmasterol in this species for the first time. The vitamins alpha-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol were also identified in extracts of the leaves of Caraipa species for the first time. The data shows that the botanical parts of C. densifolia Mart. has a much richer spectrum of secondary plant substances than previously reported.

UNLABELLED: This study evaluates the effect of zoledronic acid (ZOL) on the osseointegration of titanium implants in rabbits with glucocorticoid (GC)-induced bone loss, and our findings demonstrated that a single dose of ZOL is able to reverse the detrimental effects of GCs on the osseointegration of titanium implants. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ZOL on the osseointegration of titanium implants in rabbits with GC-induced bone loss. METHODS: Three groups of six NZW rabbits were treated for 18 weeks with saline (SALINE), GC (methylprednisolone, 0.35 mg/kg three times a week), or GC + ZOL (methylprednisolone + single dose of ZOL, 0.1 mg/kg). The animals received a titanium implant in the left tibia after 6 weeks and were killed at the 18th week. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline, eighth week (W8), and 18th week (W18) after treatment to determine the change upon treatment (BMD). Histomorphometric and serum bone alkaline phosphatase analysis (BAP) were also performed. RESULTS: At W8, GC group had a significant reduction in lumbar spine and tibia BMD compared with SALINE (p = 0.003 and p = 0.000), as also observed for GC + ZOL group (p = 0.014 and p = 0.003) just 2 weeks after ZOL treatment. In contrast, at W18, the GC + ZOL had an evident BMD rescue with similar lumbar spine and tibia BMD compared with SALINE (0.043 +/- 0.006 vs. 0.055 +/- 0.009 g/cm(2), p = 0.457 and 0.027 +/- 0.003 vs. 0.041 +/- 0.011 g/cm(2), p = 0.232) and a significantly higher BMD compared with the GC (p = 0.024 and p = 0.001). Histomorphometry revealed that osseointegration was significantly reduced in GC (tibia cortical thickness and diameter, bone-implant contact, total and peri-implant bone area) whereas GC + ZOL had these parameters similar to SALINE (p > 0.05). Likewise, ZOL reversed the BAP alteration induced by GC. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrated that a single dose of ZOL is able to reverse the detrimental effects of glucocorticoids on the osseointegration of titanium implants, suggesting that ZOL therapy may improve the outcome of bone implants in patients with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

As espécies pertencentes à família Palmae são muito interessantes do ponto de vista químico e farmacológico. Neste trabalho, foram estudados os frutos de duas espécies da família Palmae, Syagrus oleracea e Mauritia vinifera. Essas palmeiras foram escolhidas por serem espécies brasileiras, abundantes em nosso país, utilizadas popularmente no tratamento de algumas doenças e ainda pouco estudadas. Foram realizados ensaios farmacológicos para avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana dos extratos dos frutos das duas espécies em estudo. Para o teste de atividade antimicrobiana foram utilizadas cepas de bactérias Gram positivas e Gram negativas. A metodologia empregada foi a de Microdiluição em caldo. Foram testados os extratos etanólicos brutos do epicarpo/mesocarpo de S. oleracea e de M. vinifera, o extrato hexânico das amêndoas de S. oleracea, as partições hexânicas e em acetato de etila do epicarpo/mesocarpo de S. oleracea, do epicarpo/mesocarpo e mesocarpo/endocarpo de M. vinifera, na concentração de 100 mg/ml. Os extratos lipofílicos de S. oleracea apresentaram os melhores resultados para essa espécie. Nos testes realizados com M. vinifera, as partições lipofílicas foram as mais inibitórias para a cepa de S. aureus.


Palmae species are very interesting by the chemical and pharmacological points of view. Two species belonging to this family were chosen to initiate the chemical and pharmacological approach of their fruits: Syagrus oleracea (Martius) Beccari and Mauritia vinifera Martius, known in Brazil as Guariroba and Buriti, respectively. Those palm species can be found in several regions of Brazil, especially at the northeast and southeast of the country. They have been used in folk medicine to treat some diseases, however no toxicological and pharmacological studies have been done so far. For the two studied fruits, the antimicrobial activity tests were carried out by broth microdilution methodology. The objective of this work was to contribute for the pharmacological study of palm species, evaluating the antimicrobial activity of the extracts obtained from the fruits of S. oleracea and M. vinifera. The assays evaluated ethanol extracts of the epicarp/mesocarp of S. oleracea and epicarp/mesocarp of M. vinifera; hexane extract of the endosperm of S. oleracea; hexane and ethyl acetate fractions of the epicarp/mesocarp of S. oleracea, epicarp/mesocarp of M. vinifera and mesocarp/endocarp of M. vinifera. The lipophilic extracts of S. oleracea obtained the best results for the species. For M. vinifera, the lipophilic partitions have shown a high inhibitory percentage for S. aureus.

In this work, 22 alcoholic extracts, obtained from 14 species of plants belonging to four families, used for different food and medicinal purposes in Brazil, were evaluated for their capacity to inhibit the reduction of the free radical, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and to protect Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, an eukaryotic cell model, against the lethal oxidative stress caused by tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBH). Five extracts, two from Lamiaceae family (ethanol and butanol extracts from aerial parts of Hyptis fasciculata) and three from Palmae family (Copernicia cerifera leaves and mesocarp of fruits and the endocarp/mesocarp of fruits from Orbignya speciosa) were able to increase the tolerance of S. cerevisiae to TBH and showed to be active as DPPH radical scavengers, thus indicating that these plant extracts could be considered as potential sources of antioxidants. With the exception of ethanol extract of H. fasciculata, the remainder four extracts exhibited a DPPH radical scavenging activity higher than that obtained from Ginkgo biloba, a reference plant with well documented antioxidant activity. Interestingly, the ethanol extract of G. biloba were not effective for yeast cell protection, reinforcing the antioxidant potential of these extracts.

Analytical results obtained by ICP-MS of hair samples from a group of women from Rio de Janeiro city show that abnormal Ca and P concentrations in this compartment can be an indication of pathologies affecting the metabolism of these elements. The study was conducted initially on 900 women (outpatients, >40 years). From this group, approx. 24% showed anomalously high or low Ca concentrations in hair, in some cases correlated to anomalies of other elements. In 144 cases (16%), very high concentrations of Ca (up to 8,285 mg/kg) were measured, frequently correlated with a high concentration of P (up to 4,720 mg/kg), exceeding by far the reference intervals for this age/sex group. Follow-up studies of a few individuals from this group gave first indications that their abnormal hair compositions were related to endocrinologic pathologies affecting calcium/bone metabolism. Very low hair Ca-concentrations were observed in older women (72 cases, age >60 years) and related to senile osteoporosis. Complementary investigations of patients with recognized endocrinologic pathologies (hyperthyroidism, hyper- and hypoparathyroidism) and osteomalacia gave statistical support for the hypothesis that hair concentrations of Ca, P and various other trace elements are influenced characteristically by these diseases. In patients with hyperparathyroidism and hyperthyroidism, both elements showed significant increase in hair, whereas patients with rickets/osteomalacia had only elevated Ca concentrations, together with suspiciously high toxic levels of Cd and various other elements (Fe, Mn, Mg, Sr, Ba). Patients with hypoparathyroidism had significantly decreased Ca and P concentrations in hair. Statistical evaluation of these data by multivariant analysis (MANOVA) using a contrast matrix and by discriminant analysis showed that elemental hair anomalies can be used to diagnose correctly the above-mentioned pathologies, demonstrating the usefulness of hair analysis as a complementary tool for the detection of disturbances in calcium/bone metabolism.

Neonatal tetanus (NNT) is a leading cause of neonatal mortality in developing countries and is frequently called 'the silent epidemic'. It is endemic in over 90 countries throughout the world. Incidence is often not known, obstructing cost-effective resource management for control measures. In many developing countries NNT is responsible for one-half of the neonatal mortality and up to one-quarter of infant mortality. Case-fatality rates (CFR) can, even with treatment, reach 80-90%. Operational tools for the rapid identification of NNT risk areas need to be developed for WHO's programme which calls for the elimination of NNT by 1995. Results of a rapid assessment technique, carried out in 1990, were compared with those found in a household survey, which was independently carried out in Jalisco, Mexico, in 1988. One approach used random sample survey techniques in rural communities, which in previous years had reported NNT. Of 40 neonatal deaths, 8 (20%) were attributable to NNT. The annual incidence rate was 4.6/1000 livebirths. Using this as the 'gold standard', a rapid assessment technique was evaluated. The NNT cases seen at health services were randomly matched with other neonatal illnesses obtained from health records and then mapped. Age-specific catchment areas for hospitals under investigation and risk areas for NNT were obtained. Areas without NNT cases but with other neonatal illnesses have been operationally considered to be at low risk for NNT. The use of health services by neonates with other pathologies supports the hypothesis that an NNT case, if it occurred within the same time period and area under investigation, would most probably have been admitted.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

PURPOSE: To asses effectivity of postoperative reinfusion of shed mediastinal blood in reduction of homologous transfusions at cardiac surgery and to study the possibility of side effects. METHODS: Fifteen patients submitted to cardiac surgery that had their shed mediastinal blood reinfused after surgery were compared to another group of 15 patients. The two groups were compared in relation to: volume of shed blood, number of units of blood used in postoperative period, culture of shed blood, postoperative complications, number of days of hospitalization, hematocrit at the end of hospitalization and mortality. RESULTS: The use of whole blood and packed blood cells decreased from 25 to 10 units with reinfusion of shed mediastinal blood (p < 0.01). Volume of shed blood, postoperative complications, period of hospitalization, hematocrit at the end of hospitalization and mortality were not different in both groups. Culture of shed blood, in 8 patients of control group and all patients of study group were negative. CONCLUSION: Reinfusion of shed mediastinal blood in postoperative of cardiac surgery proved to be very efficient in decreasing homologous blood transfusions. This procedure is also safe, with no additional risk to patients.
