Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are vital for crop growth. However, most agricultural systems have limited inherent ability to supply N and P to crops. Biochars (BCs) are strongly advocated in agrosystems and are known to improve the availability of N and P in crops through different chemical transformations. Herein, a soil-biochar incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the transformations of N and P in two different textured soils, namely clay loam and loamy sand, on mixing with rice straw biochar (RSB) and acacia wood biochar (ACB) at each level (0, 0.5, and 1.0% w/w). Ammonium N (NH4-N) decreased continuously with the increasing incubation period. The ammonium N content disappeared rapidly in both the soils incubated with biochars compared to the unamended soil. RSB increased the nitrate N (NO3-N) content significantly compared to ACB for the entire study period in both texturally divergent soils. The nitrate N content increased with the enhanced biochar addition rate in clay loam soil until 15 days after incubation; however, it was reduced for the biochar addition rate of 1% compared to 0.5% at 30 and 60 days after incubation in loamy sand soil. With ACB, the net increase in nitrate N content with the biochar addition rate of 1% remained higher than the 0.5% rate for 60 days in clay loam and 30 days in loamy sand soil. The phosphorus content remained consistently higher in both the soils amended with two types of biochars till the completion of the experiment.

INTRODUCTION: The Desarda autologous tissue repair is comparable to the Lichtenstein hernioplasty for inguinal hernia regarding recurrence, chronic groin pain, and return to work activities. This study was designed to establish the outcomes of Desarda's repair versus Lichtenstein's hernioplasty concerning post-operative recovery to normal gait and its feasibility under local anesthesia (LA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a single-center, prospective, double-blinded, non-inferiority, randomized trial. Patients undergoing open hernia repair for primary inguinal hernia were included. Patients were randomly assigned and followed up for 2 years. The primary endpoint was the time to return to normal gait post-surgery with comfort (non-inferiority margin fixed as 0.5 days). The secondary outcomes studied were post-operative pain score, the time required to return to work (all previously performed activities), and surgical-site occurrences (SSO). RESULTS: One hundred ten eligible patients were randomly assigned [56 patients (50.9%) in the Desarda group and 54 patients (49.1%) in the Lichtenstein group]. All the procedures were safely performed under LA. The median (interquartile range) time for resuming gait post-surgery with comfort was 5 days in the Desarda vs 4 days in Lichtenstein's arm (P = 0.16), thereby failing to demonstrate non-inferiority of Desarda against Lichtenstein hernioplasty. However, there were no significant differences in days to return to work, SSO, chronic groin pain, and recurrence within two years of surgery. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study could not demonstrate the non-inferiority of the Desarda repair versus Lichtenstein hernioplasty regarding the time taken to return to normal gait. Comparing the days to return to work, pain score, SSO, and chronic groin pain, including recurrence rate, Desarda repair faired equally with Lichtenstein hernioplasty, thereby highlighting its feasibility and efficacy under LA. 5-fluorouracil is an essential component of systemic chemotherapy for colon, breast, head, and neck cancer patients. However, tumoral overexpression of the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase has rendered 5-FU clinically ineffective by inactivating it to 5'-6'-dihydro fluorouracil. The responses to 5-FU in terms of efficacy and toxicity greatly differ depending upon the population group, because of variability in the DPD activity levels. In the current study, key active site amino acids involved in the 5-FU inactivation were investigated by modelling the 3D structure of human DPD in a complex with 5-FU. The identified amino acids were analyzed for their possible missense mutations available in dbSNP database. Out of 12 missense SNPs, four were validated either by sequencing in the 1000 Genomes project or frequency/genotype data. The recorded validated missense SNPs were further considered to analyze the effect of their respective alterations on 5-FU binding. Overall findings suggested that population bearing the Glu611Val DPD mutation (rs762523739) is highly vulnerable to 5-FU resistance. From the docking, electrostatic complementarity, dynamics, and energy decomposition analyses it was found that the above mutation showed superior scores than the wild DPD -5FU complex. Therefore, prescribing prodrug NUC-3373 or DPD inhibitors (Gimeracil/3-Cyano-2,6-Dihydroxypyridines) as adjuvant therapy may overcome the 5-FU resistance.

Twenty-four weaned male Barbari kids (age 144.67 days; weight 11.99 ± 0.49 kg) were divided equally into three groups (T1, T2, and T3) in order to investigate the effect of supplementation of phytogenic feed additives (herbal mixture) in the complete pelleted feed on growth performance, in vitro rumen fermentation and carcass quality in kids reared under stall-fed condition. Treatment groups were as follows: T1, concentrate mixture (40%) plus arhar (Cajanus cajan) straw (60%) in total mixed ration (TMR) form fed ad libitum; T2, T1 diet in complete feed pellets form fed ad libitum; and T3, T1 diet in complete feed pellets form supplemented with herbal mixture (Tulsi/Haldi/Amla/Arni; ratio 1:1:1:1 on DM basis) at 0.5% in complete feed fed ad libitum. The experimental kids in each group were allowed for feeding for 8 months by following the respective feeding schedule. Rumen fermentation pattern under in vitro system was also studied using the same three diets as substrates. After 240 days of feeding, all goats were slaughtered following standard protocol. Total body weight gain (kg) and average daily gain (ADG, g/day/kid) were 18.57, 22.26, and 23.06 kg, and 79.91, 101.49, and 100.18 g in T1, T2, and T3 treatments, respectively. Pelleting of TMR (T2) and supplementation of herbal mixture in pelleted feed (T3) increased (P < 0.001) average daily weight gain in Barbari kids compared to T1 (TMR). Average dry matter intake (DMI, g/day/kid) during growth trial was greater (P < 0.05) in T3 (1079.17) than T1 (849.76) and T2 (968.76). Feed conversion efficiency was 8.92, 9.48, and 8.68% in T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The difference was statistically non-significant among the treatments. Supplementation of herbal mixture in the complete pelleted substrate had adjunct effect on improvement of TCA-precipitable-N and total VFAs in the incubation medium under in vitro system. Carcass weight (kg) tended to increase in finisher kids under T2 (16.58) and T3 (16.70) than T1 (14.61), but the variation was non-significant. The dressing percentage was similar among three treatments. Similarly, the muscle protein, fat, and cholesterol contents remained unaffected by different dietary treatments. Therefore, it may be concluded that densification of feeds in the form of complete pelleted feed and further supplementation with potential phytogenic feed additives increased total DMI and ADG and tended to enhance meat production potential in finisher Barbari kids without changing the meat chemical composition.

Background Ficus religiosa, commonly known as peepal, is widely distributed in Indian subcontinent. It has been used as an antiepileptic, aphrodisiac, analgesic, antiinflammatory and laxative in traditional medicine. Objective To explore the analgesic effect of aqueous root extract of Ficus religiosa using thermal and chemical models of pain in swiss albino mice. Method The aqueous aerial root extract of Ficus religiosa was prepared using soxhlet apparatus. The anti-nociceptive effect of the extract at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg was evaluated using peripheral (acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing), spinal (tail flick) and supra-spinal (hot plate) behavioral models of pain. All data were presented as Mean ± SEM. Statistical differences between Ficus religiosa (50 and 100 mg/kg) and standard control groups were evaluated using Mann-Whitney U test. Result There was significant dose dependent increase in the mean reaction time compared to the vehicle control in hot plate and tail- flick test. In acetic acid induced writhing test, mice treated with Ficus religiosa (50 and 100 mg/kg) exhibited significant dose-dependent decrease in the mean number of writhes (57.45% and 79.20% respectively) compared to the vehicle control. The activity of Ficus religiosa extract at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg was equipotent to Standard control (Morphine and Indomethacin) used in different test models. Conclusion The extract of Ficus religiosa possesses both central and peripheral analgesic activity thus validating the traditional use of this plant in the management of pain.

Resistant superficial dermatophytic infections of the skin and its appendages have emerged as a major health problem in India. Mutations in Squalene epoxidase gene have led to increasing incidence of resistance to terbinafine in dermatophytic isolates. We examined six patients with recalcitrant dermatophytosis attending Dermatology OPD at a tertiary care hospital and demonstrated terbinafine resistance by molecular method. Immediate hyperitivity (IH) reaction to Trichophytin antigen was highlighted in these patients. The patients were treated with alternate antifungals after demonstration of resistance to terbinafine based on the antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST). On follow up the patients responded well to the substitute but the duration of therapy had to be prolonged beyond six weeks.

Curcuma longa L., commonly known as turmeric, is a rhizomatous herb of the family Zingiberaceae. It is mostly used as a spice, a coloring agent and broadly used in traditional medicine such as Ayurveda, Unani, etc., Turmeric rhizomes interact with a large numbers of rhizosphere-associated microbial species, and some enter the plant tissue and act as endophytes. Both rhizospheric and endophytic species are directly or indirectly involved in growth promotion and disease management in plants and also play an important role in the modulation of morphological growth, secondary metabolite production, curcumin content, antioxidant properties, etc. The present review focuses on the rhizobacterial and endophytic bacterial and fungal populations associated with the turmeric.

SETTING: Programmatic Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (PMDT) programme in 32 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. OBJECTIVE: To provide epidemiological status of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and associated microbial genetic mutations among suspected cases in UP. DESIGN: We retrospectively studied and tested using line-probe assay (LPA) 4895 retreatment patients with suspected MDR-TB who were enrolled for PMDT during 2012-2015. The demographic characteristics of cases, LPA-determined drug resistance, the genetic mutation profile, trends in drug resistance over the study period as well as the comparative performance of LPA and phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST) were analysed. RESULTS: MDR-TB and rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) were confirmed in respectively 34.5% and 40.3% cases. The RR-TB detection rate (a valid proxy for MDR-TB) initially declined during the study period. Age â©¿30 years and implemented MDR-TB suspicion criteria were independent predictors for RR-TB (P < 0.01). LPA indicated predominant distribution of S531L (1483/1970, 75.3%) and S315T1 (1981/2116, 93.6%) mutations in the rpoB and katG genes, respectively, and had >94.0% agreement with phenotypic DST in determining rifampicin/isoniazid resistance. CONCLUSION: MDR-TB prevalence in retreatment cases is very high, highlighting the need to reduce the development and transmission of drug-resistant TB.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to determine the potential of melatonin supplementation in ameliorating tissue oxidative stress, elevated serum corticosterone and hepatic and renal dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult Wistar rats, either ovariectomized or sham-operated, served as experimental or control groups, respectively. Rats received either melatonin, estrogen, progesterone or a combination of melatonin and estrogen for a period of 15 days. Tissue oxidative stress, serum markers of hepatic and renal dysfunction and serum corticosterone level formed the parameters of assay in all groups at the end of the treatment schedule. RESULTS: Ovariectomized rats showed significant increases in levels of tissue lipid peroxidation, serum levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and corticosterone and significant decrement in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant status. All parameters showed maximal reversal to control levels on supplementation with high-dose melatonin or estrogen + melatonin treatment. CONCLUSION: Melatonin supplementation proved better than estrogen replacement therapy, with the higher dose being more effective in preventing ovariectomy-induced increases in oxidative stress and serum levels of marker parameters of hepatic and renal dysfunction and corticosterone titer. Overall, melatonin supplementation therapy qualifies as a more potent and safe alternative to estrogen replacement therapy in alleviating postmenopausal increases in oxidative stress and hepatic and renal dysfunction.

Withania somnifera is an ayurvedic Indian medicinal plant whose immunomodulatory activities have been widely used as a home remedy for several ailments. We recently observed immunostimulatory properties in the root extracts of chemotypes NMITLI-101, NMITLI-118, NMITLI-128 and pure withanolide, withaferin A. In the present study, we evaluated the potential immunoprophylactic efficacies of these extracts against an infective pathogen. Our results show that administration of aqueous ethanol extracts (10 mg/kg) and withaferin A (0·3 mg/kg), 7 days before and after challenge with human filarial parasite Brugia malayi, offers differential protection in Mastomys coucha with chemotype 101R offering best protection (53·57%) as compared to other chemotypes. Our findings also demonstrate that establishment of B. malayi larvae was adversely affected by pretreatment with withaferin A as evidenced by 63·6% reduction in adult worm establishment. Moreover, a large percentage of the established female worms (66·2%) also showed defective embryogenesis. While the filaria-specific immunological response induced by withaferin A and NMITLI-101 showed a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype, 118R stimulated production of IFN-γ and 128R increased levels of IL-4. Taken together, our findings reveal potential immunoprophylactic properties of W. somnifera, and further studies are needed to ascertain the benefits of this plant against other pathogens as well.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of melatonin supplementation therapy as an alternative to estrogen replacement therapy in an ovariectomized rat model and to assess diabetogenic metabolic dysregulation caused by estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal individuals. METHODS: Ovariectomized adult Wistar rats were treated with either estrogen/progesterone, melatonin or a combination of estrogen and melatonin. Body weight gain, feed efficiency, serum glucose, insulin, glucose tolerance and insulin response, serum and tissue lipids, tissue glycogen contents and activities of glycogen phosphorylase and glucose-6-phosphatase were analyzed in all the experimental groups. RESULTS: Ovariectomized animals showed increased body weight gain, feed efficiency, fasting insulin resistance, greater area under curve for the glucose tolerance test, higher serum and tissue lipids and reduced glycogen content and insulin sensitivity. A low dose of melatonin was more efficient than estrogen in reversing all the ovariectomy-induced changes. The combination of estrogen + melatonin was found to be best in correcting glycemic dysregulation while high doses of melatonin could effectively regulate dyslipidemia. CONCLUSION: The present study provides strong evidence for melatonin supplementation therapy to be more potent and effective in comparison to estrogen replacement therapy due to its single-handed ability to revert all the ovariectomy-induced changes. No reported side-effect or long-term effect of melatonin, against the known effects of estrogen replacement therapy, make it more attractive as a candidate to treat postmenopausal symptoms.

An investigation was carried out for in vitro degradation of fluoranthene by four bacterial strains (PSM6, PSM7, PSM10 and PSM11) isolated from the petroleum sludge. Although all the strains registered their growth in MSM with 100 ppm fluoranthene, PSM11 growth was better than other strains. Growth of bacterial strains invariably corresponded to their degradation potential of fluoranthene. After 168 h of incubation, 61% fluoranthene was degraded by PSM11, followed by PSM10 (48%) and PSM6 (42%) and the least was recorded in PSM7 (41%). Besides, 11% loss in fluoranthene was attributed to abiotic factors. Thirty-eight times more activity of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase than catechol 1,2-dioxygenase showed that it played a significant role in fluoranthene degradation. Molecular weight of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase isolated from PSM11 was determined as ∼ 136 kDa by size exclusion chromatography and 34 kDa on denaturing SDS-PAGE, indicating tetrameric nature of the enzyme.

Therapeutic efficacy of an "Indigenous vaccine" has been evaluated with respect to a commercial vaccine (Gudair, Spain), for the control of clinical Johne's disease (JD) in naturally infected goatherds. Seventy-one goats (JD positive) were randomly divided into 3 groups ("Bison", "Gudair" and "Sham-immunized"). After vaccination, goats were monitored for physical condition, morbidity, mortality, body weights, shedding of M. paratuberculosis (MAP) in feces, internal condition and lesions, as well as humoral and cell-mediated immune responses for 210 days. Study showed marked overall improvement in physical condition of vaccinated goats and average body weight gain was significantly higher (P < .05) in "Bison" group as compared to "Sham-immunized" goats. Mortality due to JD was significantly (P < .05) lower in vaccinated groups than in "sham-immunized". Morbidity rates (due to diarrhea and weakness) were lower in "Bison" group as compared to other groups. Died goats from vaccinated groups showed regression of gross JD lesions and regeneration of fat layer around visceral organs while "Sham-immunized" goats exhibited frank lesions. Vaccinated goats had higher protective CMI response and also higher antibody titer for the trial period as compared to "Sham immunized". Both vaccines also reduced shedding of MAP in feces significantly (P < .05). Though the two vaccines effectively restricted the severity of clinical symptoms of JD, however "Indigenous vaccine" was superior in many respects.

The zinc disc implantation-induced urinary bladder calculi model in the rat is commonly used for preclinical evaluation of the antiurolithiatic activity of test compounds. Certain published reports state that relatively long durations for which zinc discs must be implanted in the bladders of rats. Hence, there is a need to refine this model. These investigations aimed to determine whether long-term studies using the zinc disc implantation model provide any additional data that affect the final outcomes of the study. In this study, we evaluated the effects of a well-known antiurolithiatic polyherbal drug, Cystone, for different treatment durations of 10, 20 and 48 days postimplantation. Our results indicate that even the shortest duration of 10 days is sufficient to reveal antiurolithiatic effects of a test drug. Hence, in the zinc disc implantation-induced urinary bladder calculi model, the study duration is proposed to be minimized so as to reduce the distress caused to the rats due to long-term exposure to the implant. Further, it is suggested that the growth of the bladder calculi can be monitored by taking X-ray radiographs of the bladder deposits to decide the time to terminate the study. Use of preformed calcium oxalate crystal instead of zinc discs, as suggested in earlier reports by others, may also be considered to avoid the sacrifice of rats at the end of the study.

Over expression of lectin genes in E. coli often gives inclusion bodies that are solubilised to characterize lectins. We made N-terminal fusion of the Allium sativum leaf agglutinin (ASAL) with SUMO (small ubiquitin related modifier) peptide. The SUMO peptide allowed expression of the recombinant lectin in E. coli, predominantly in soluble form. The soluble fusion protein could be purified by immobilized metal affinity column (IMAC), followed by size exclusion chromatography. The SUMO protease failed to cleave the SUMO peptide from ASAL. This may be due to steric hindrance caused by the homodimer structure of the chimeric ASAL. Some properties like dimerization, haemagglutination and insecticidal properties of the recombinant SUMO-ASAL fusion protein were comparable to the plant derived native lectin. However, glycan array analysis revealed that the carbohydrate binding specificity of the recombinant SUMO-ASAL was altered. Further, the fusion protein was not toxic to E. coli (native ASAL exhibited toxicity). The recombinant lectin was more thermo-labile as compared to the native lectin. Three important findings of this study are: (1) sugar specificity of ASAL can be altered by amino-terminal fusion; (2) anti-E. coli activity of ASAL can be eliminated by N-terminal SUMO fusion and (3) SUMO-ASAL may be a preferred candidate insecticidal protein for the development of transgenic plants.

Multiple cropping (i.e. intercropping or mixed cropping) plays an important role in agriculture because of the effective utilization of resources, significantly enhancing crop productivity compared with that of monocultured crops. The study was planed to assess the effect of various concentrations (00, 30, 60, 90 kg ha(-1)) of phosphorous on the biochemical composition of grains of Hordeum vulgare L. (NDB-1050) in mixed cropping system with Chickpea. Phosphorous is an essential ingredient for plants to convert atmospheric N (N2) into an ammonium (NH4) as a useable form. The available nitrogen content was found more in the year 2006 (131 kg ha(-1)) than year 2005 (105 kg ha(-1)). The results of available nitrogen content were showed that the mixed cropping system enhances N fixation process because phosphorous also influences nodule development through its basic functions in plants as an energy source. Reducing, non reducing and total sugar content of H. vulgare L. were influenced by changes in the phosphorous doses. Maximum protein (13.43%) was obtained at 60 kg P2O5 ha(-1) during the year 2006. Lysine, tryptophan and methionine content were found maximum in year 2006, respectively. Total mineral content of grains of plant (0.99 g 100g(-1)) was found maximum by the application of 60 kg P2O5 ha(-1). It is possible that there was an increase in the soil N made available by the leguminous chickpea species, and this could be another reason why there was an increase in Hordeum vulgare L. shoot mass per plant with intercropping with chickpea.

A field experiment was conducted to study the impact of Sulphur(S) and Phosphorus (P) on yield, nutrient status of soil and their contents in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) during the year 2008-2009. Seven treatments were studied in Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replications. The treatment combinations were derived from three levels of sulphur (0, 20 and 40 kg S ha(-1)) and four levels of phosphorus (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha(-1)). The experimental soil was medium black, slightly calcareous, clay in texture and slightly alkaline in reaction. The results indicated a significant increase in grain yield (14.81 q ha(-1)) and straw yield (41.26 q ha(-1)) of pigeonpea after 20 kg S ha(-1) and 50 kg P2O5 ha(-1) treatment with common dose of nitrogen @ 30 kg ha(-1). The increase in grain and straw yield was 102.77 and 52.87% as compare to higher over control. Maximum number of pods plant(-1), maximum number of grains pod and test weight by this treatment was also observed as compared to control. Application of S and P improved soil fertility status and S alone did not influence P availability. Hence, in order to maintain the fertility status of the soil at high level, combine application of 20 kg S ha(-1) with 50 kg P2O5 ha(-1) is essential. The residual fertility status of soil is advocated for rainfed pigeonpea crop grown on vertisol in Vidarbha region.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Chandauli district is one of the less studied regions of India for its ethnobotanical values. The present paper synthesizes the first report related to the documentation and conservation of ethnomedicinal plants of Chandauli district and their socio-economic relationship with the forests and its resources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethnobotanical data were collected using semi-structured interviews, field observations, preference and direct matrix ranking with traditional medicine practitioners. RESULTS: The use of 40 medicinal plants belonging to 27 families was documented in the tribal communities of Chandauli district in India. These species were used in combination of some exotic species such as Foeniculum vulgare, Prosopis spicigera, Crataeva nurvala, Curcuma longa, Punica granatum, Aloe vera, Cocos nucifera, Ocimum sanctum and Allium cepa and some medicinal stones, minerals, salts, etc. Most of the plants (94.6%) were reportedly used to treat human diseases. CONCLUSIONS: Documenting the eroding plants and associated indigenous knowledge can be used as a basis for developing management plans for conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants in the area. The principal threatening factors reported were deforestation (90%), agricultural expansion (85%) and overgrazing (53%).

The K-D2 point is the Korean hand acupressure point in Koryo Hand Therapy for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting. We evaluated the efficacy of capsaicin ointment at the K-D2 point in 186 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a randomised, prospective, double-blind and placebo-controlled study. Patients were randomised to have either placebo ointment or capsaicin ointment applied to the K-D2 point of both hands 1 h before surgery under standardised anaesthesia. The ointment was removed 8 h later. Postoperative nausea and vomiting was evaluated 6 and 24 h following surgery. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was lower in the capsaicin group, with an absolute risk reduction (ARR) of 21%, a relative risk reduction (RRR) of 50% and a number-needed-to-treat (NNT) of 5 at 0-6 h (p = 0.001), and an ARR of 11%, a RRR of 85% and a NNT of 9 at 6-24 h (p = 0.003). The need for rescue anti-emetic treatment was also lower at 0-6 h (3 (3%) vs 11 (12%); p = 0.04) and at 6-24 h (5 (5%) vs 0; p = 0.02).

The influence of age at which aluminum (Al) exposure was initiated on the efficacy of chelation therapy in mobilizing Al was investigated in two groups of male rats exposed to this element at two different stages of the life cycle. Young (21 days old) and old (18 months) rats were exposed to 0 and 50 mg Al/kg/day administered as Al nitrate in drinking water for a preliminary period of 14 days followed by a period of 100 days, in which Al-exposed animals received 100 mg Al/kg/day. At the end of the period of exposure, Al-loaded rats in each age group were given one of the following treatments: s.c. deferoxamine (DFO), oral 1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (L1) and 1-(p-methylbenzyl)-2-ethyl-3-hydroxypyrid-4-one (MeBzEM) at doses of 0.89 mmol/kg/day for 5 consecutive days. Another group of Al-exposed rats received a concurrent administration of s.c. DFO and oral L1 both at 0.45 mmol/kg/day. During chelation therapy urines were collected daily. Control groups included rats exposed and unexposed to Al. Oral administration of L1 was the most effective treatment in enhancing urinary Al excretion in both age groups of Al-loaded rats. This beneficial effect was similar for old and young animals. Concurrent administration of DFO and L1 had no advantages over the use of either single agent, while MeBzEM was not effective in mobilizing Al from Al-exposed rats.
