RESUMEN

The resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) produces beams for the majority of experiments at the ISOLDE on-line isotope separator. A substantial improvement in RILIS performance has been achieved through a series of upgrade steps: replacement of the copper vapor lasers by a Nd:YAG laser; replacement of the old homemade dye lasers by new commercial dye lasers; installation of a complementary Ti:Sapphire laser system. The combined dye and Ti:Sapphire laser system with harmonics is capable of generating beams at any wavelength in the range of 210-950 nm. In total, isotopes of 31 different elements have been selectively laser-ionized and separated at ISOLDE, including recently developed beams of samarium, praseodymium, polonium, and astatine.

RESUMEN

The discovery of cannabinoids, with the well-known stimulatory effect of Cannabis sativa on appetite, has offered a new drug target for obesity treatment. Cannabinoids act on two different receptors: CB1 receptors which are sited in the brain and many peripheral tissues, and CB2 receptors which are primarily found in immune system cells. Cannabinoid receptor antagonists act centrally by blocking CB1 receptors, thereby reducing food intake. Moreover, they probably also act peripherally by increasing thermogenesis and therefore energy expenditure, as has been suggested by animal experiments. Despite these promising mechanisms of action, recent clinical studies examining the effect of the two CB1 receptor antagonists rimonabant and taranabant showed that the attained weight loss did not exceed that attained with other currently approved anti-obesity medications. Moreover, potentially severe psychiatric adverse effects limit their clinical use. As several new CB1 receptor antagonists are presently undergoing development, it remains to be elucidated to what extent they differ in terms of efficacy and safety. This review primarily discusses how close cannabinoid receptor antagonists are to the ideal anti-obesity drug, with respect to their mechanisms of action, clinical effectiveness and safety.

RESUMEN

Determination of body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was evaluated in healthy men, by using underwater weighing (UWW), skinfold thickness measurement, and bioimpedance analysis. There were strong correlations between percent body fat obtained by all techniques, but DEXA gave significantly lower values (P < 0.001). The influence of differences in bone mineral density (BMD) on fat content determined by UWW was also studied. The individual differences between UWW and DEXA fat estimates were calculated and there was a negative correlation with BMD (r = -0.50, P < 0.05). There was also a negative correlation between body fat by UWW and BMD (r = -0.71, P < 0.01) in the subjects with lowest fat by DEXA, indicating that high or low BMD gave false values by UWW. In conclusion, DEXA and UWW provide complementary information and a combination of these techniques seems to offer new opportunities in evaluations of body composition.
