The study examined whether a 10-minute mindfulness meditation intervention could ameliorate effects of exposure to social media thinspiration and fitspiration images on women's self-esteem, mood, and body appreciation. A total of 162 women aged 18-42 years (M = 25.94, SD = 4.38) completed an online experiment which involved viewing thinspiration and fitspiration images before random allocation to either a brief, ten-minute mindfulness meditation audio intervention or a ten-minute control audio about jujitsu. Participants completed self-reported measures of self-esteem, positive and negative mood, and body appreciation at baseline (Time 1), post-exposure to idealised social media images (Time 2), and immediately post-intervention (Time 3). Mixed, repeated-measures ANOVAs showed that scores were lower for body appreciation, self-esteem, and positive mood, and higher for negative mood, in both groups after exposure to idealised imagery. However, a brief mindfulness intervention ameliorated the negative effects of social media exposure. Specifically, self-esteem, body appreciation, and mood were higher in the mindfulness meditation group at Time 3, compared to the control group. Future interventions should explore the utility of mindfulness practices to provide long term buffering effects against such social media content, as well as targeting the idealisation of female physiques portrayed in thinspiration and fitspiration content.

The aim of this study was to compare the confidence of experienced radiologists in excluding colonic neoplasia with CT colonography (CTC) compared with barium enema. 78 patients (median age 70 years, range 61-87 years, 44 women) underwent same day CTC and barium enema. Two radiologists experienced in reporting barium enema assessed whether the examination had excluded a polyp 6 mm or greater as "yes", "probably" or "no" for each of 6 colonic segments. Two different radiologists experienced in CTC independently performed the same assessment on the CT datasets. Responses were compared using a paired exact test. Formal barium enema and CT reports were compared with any endoscopic examination performed within 1 year. Studies reporting polyps 6 mm+ in patients not subsequently undergoing endoscopy were reviewed by two independent observers. Radiologists stated they had confidently excluded a significant lesion in 314 (71%) and 382 (86%) of 444 segments with barium enema and CTC, respectively (p<0.001). Confidence was significantly higher with CTC in the in the descending and ascending colon (p = 0.02 and p<0.001, respectively), and caecum (p<0.001). 22 patients underwent some form of endoscopy. Of five patients with proven colorectal neoplasia (including two with cancer), CTC and barium enema correctly identified five and three, respectively. In 56 patients not undergoing endoscopy, CTC reported 17 polyps 6 mm+, of which 16 were retrospectively classified as definite or probable. 11 could not be identified on the barium enema, even in retrospect. Confidence in excluding polyps 6 mm or larger is significantly greater with CT colonography particularly in the proximal colon.

Dithiocarbamates are metal-chelating compounds that can exert either pro-oxidant or antioxidant effects in different situations. They have recently been found to potently inhibit apoptotic cell death, an activity attributed to their antioxidant action. However, when thymocytes were exposed to pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, an oxidation of the glutathione pool occurred within 90 min. Longer incubation resulted in cell shrinkage, chromatin fragmentation, glutathione depletion, and eventual cell lysis, which is typical of apoptosis in these cells. These changes were inhibited by inclusion of non-permeable metal chelators in the incubation medium, suggesting that pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate exerts its toxic effect by transporting a redox-active metal into the cell. This was directly confirmed when sustained 8-fold elevations of intracellular copper were detected after addition of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate. In agreement with this, supplementation of the incubation medium with submicromolar concentrations of copper significantly potentiated pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate toxicity. We conclude that pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate exerts a powerful pro-oxidant effect on thymocytes due to its ability to transport external redox-active copper into cells. The resulting increase in glutathione disulfide may also explain the temporary anti-apoptotic activity of this compound described in other systems.
