RESUMEN

Balloon angioplasty and stenting have increasingly been gaining widespread application for treatment of post-thrombotic alterations in the system of the vena cava. Endovascular ultrasonographic examination makes it possible with the utmost degree of reliability to determine both the extension and degree of the narrowing of venous segments, thus proving a possibility of choosing a venous stent of an appropriate diameter. Restoration of an adequate venous lumen leads to normalization of blood flow and elimination of venous hypertension. However, unsolved as yet remains the problem concerning proper management of post-thrombotic obstructions of the inferior vena cava at the level of a cava filter. Owing to a wide variety of configurations of cava filters to deploy, there are no common approaches to elimination of such obstruction. Presented herein is a clinical case report regarding successful endovascular treatment of a patient diagnosed with post-thrombotic disease secondary to endured thrombosis. The findings of both phlebography and endovascular ultrasonographic examination made it possible to diagnose obstruction of the left common iliac vein, external iliac vein, and inferior vena cava to the level of the cava filter previously deployed. In the segment of the inferior vena cava at the level of the cava filter also revealed was a pronounced luminal narrowing exceeding 90% of its diameter. We carried out stenting of the common and external iliac veins, inferior vena cava, and the cava filter. Swelling of the left leg subsided spontaneously within 2 weeks and the first postoperative month was accompanied by gradual disappearance of the previously existing feeling of heaviness in the lower limbs and a dramatic decrease in fatigue by the end of the working day.

RESUMEN

The chickweed (Stellaria media L.) pro-SmAMP2 gene encodes the hevein-like peptides that have in vitro antimicrobial activity against certain harmful microorganisms. These peptides play an important role in protecting the chickweed plants from infection, and the pro-SmAMP2 gene was previously used to protect transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants from phytopathogens. In this study, the pro-SmAMP2 gene under control of viral CaMV35S promoter or under control of its own pro-SmAMP2 promoter was transformed into cultivated potato plants of two cultivars, differing in the resistance to Alternaria: Yubiley Zhukova (resistant) and Skoroplodny (susceptible). With the help of quantitative real-time PCR, it was demonstrated that transgenic potato plants expressed the pro-SmAMP2 gene under control of both promoters at the level comparable to or exceeding the level of the potato actin gene. Assessment of the immune status of the transformants demonstrated that expression of antimicrobial peptide pro-SmAMP2 gene was able to increase the resistance to a complex of Alternaria sp. and Fusarium sp. phytopathogens only in potato plants of the Yubiley Zhukova cultivar. The possible role of the pro-SmAMP2 products in protecting potatoes from Alternaria sp. and Fusarium sp. is discussed.

RESUMEN

Antithrombotic properties of a new P2Y1 receptor antagonist N-[(1-morpholinopropyl-amino)- carbonyl-2-(1-ethyl-1H-indole-3-yl)-vinyl]-4-methylphenyl-amide hydrochloride, substance Sbt-119, and reference drug ticlopidine were studied on experimental models of arterial and systemic thromboses. Substance Sbt-119 was 39.9% (p<0.05) more potent than ticlopidine in producing the antithrombotic effect. Moreover, substance Sbt-119 was shown to increase the survival rate of animals after systemic treatment with ADP (by 20%, p<0.0001). This substance decreased the number of mural thrombi and reduced the severity of hemodynamics disturbances in the organs during systemic thrombosis.

RESUMEN

Patterns of expression of TRPM7, the major cellular magnesium transporters in neurons of the hypothalamic region and hippocampus, were studied immunohistochemically. Multidirectional nature and different levels of the expression of the above antigen were revealed during modeled magnesium deficiency with regard to structural and functional features of neuron organization in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei as well as hippocampal field CA1 and CA3. Changes in the structural characteristics of neurons in the studied areas (absolute and relative indicators) and TRPM7 expression patterns were quantitatively analyzed considering the data on the role of the studied antigen in magnesium homeostasis, cell damage, and compensation.

RESUMEN

The method of microcolumn reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (rp-HPLC) was employed to determine the content of elemental sulphur in mineral waters. The study envisaged the analysis of the samples of sulphide-containing mineral waters Novonukutskaya and Matsesta obtained by the solid phase extraction technique. Based on these data, the authors discuss the origin and the circulation of sulphur in the hydrogen sulphide sources. The elution conditions selected in this study ensured the high-resolution separation of the octasulphur peak from the peaks of allotropic components of the extract whereas the two-wave detection technique allowed to identify the peaks of molecular sulphur.

RESUMEN

The solid-state extraction technique and chromatography mass spectrometry were used to study the intrinsic composition of organic components of the mineral water obtained from the Munok deposit located in the Kazachinsko-Lensk district, Irkutsk region. The active components determining the mechanism of action of a mineral water-based preparation were identified and showed to operate similarly to those of Naftusya mineral water. The balneotherapeutic preparation was fabricated making use of the earlier developed technology of water vapor distillation. The analysis of organic components of mineral water and its extraction products showed the presence of aliphatic hydrocarbons with the high content of unsaturated compounds. The preparation thus obtained, unlike the standard balneotherapeutic medicines, does riot contain an inorganic matrix; it was shown to increase body resistance in the phase of remission in the patients treated for the management of urolithiasis.

RESUMEN

A new technology for isolation of medicinal balneological preparations from mineral waters has been developed. It is based on the extraction of biologically active compounds (BAC) from mineral waters with ethanol following oxidative hydrolysis and water vapour distillation. This technology has no analogs both in this country and abroad. Unlike ordinary balneological medicines, those obtained by the new method do not contain inorganic matrix, show higher activity, and remain stable for a longer period. The primary composition of BACs isolated by the above technology was studied using solid-phase extraction and chromatomass-spectrometry. Analysis of Extramine, a medicinal preparation from Novonukutskaya hydrogen sulfide mineral water (Siberian Matsesta), allowed to identify active components responsible for its therapeutic effects and elucidate mechanisms of their action. The 15-year-long experience with practical application of BACs obtained with the help of the new technology has demonstrated that they possesses antiallergic, antiviral, and analeptic activities. These compounds increase general resistance of the organism to infection, promote removal of toxic substances, accelerate wound and injury healing, and prevent the development of herpes infection.

RESUMEN

AIM: To define the impact of phosphorus and calcium metabolic disturbances in patients with early-stage chronic renal disease (CRD) on the cardiovascular system. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The levels of phosphate (P), calcium, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25(OH) vitamin D and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D, serum lipidogram, carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT), and X-ray degree of abdominal artery calcification (AAC) were determined and echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood pressure monitoring were made in 465 patients with Stages I-V CRD who did not receive renal replacement therapy (of them, 73.5% of the patients had early (I to III) stages). RESULTS: Blood 1,25(OH)2D was related inversely to left ventricular (LV) posterior wall thickness, blood pressure (BP), triglycerides, and the degree of AAC and correlated directly to the severity of LV diastolic dysfunction and inversely to IMT, the presence of coronary heart disease and heart failure (HF). ACC, LV hypertrophy, and arterial hypertension (AH) were more significant in patients with higher serum levels PTH and P. CONCLUSION: In patients with early-stage CRD, phosphorus and calcium metabolic disturbances promote the development of AH, vascular and cardiac valvular calcification, myocardial hypertrophy, and HF.

RESUMEN

The objective of the present work was to study the wound-healing potential of the new preparation, Extramin (a 32% ethanol extract of organic substances from Novonukutskaya mineral water) in a series of experiments on a model of chemical burns in rabbits. The wound healing process was monitored based on biochemical, hematiological, and morphological indicators. Analysis of the results allows for the conclusion that Extramin is a powerful stimulator of the wound-healing processes and can be recommended for further clinical studies.

RESUMEN

On occurrence of oospores (sexual stage), 88 Phytophthora infestans populations were investigated. The populations were collected in 14 regions of Russia. In total, 3677 samples have been checked: 2888--from potato leaflets (55 populations), 344--from tomato leaflets (16 populations), 445--from tomato fruits (17 populations). The oospores have been detected both in potato and tomato leaflets and in fruits with different occurrence--4.4%, 11.9%, and 28.8%. Occurrence of oospores per sample was also maximal in tomato fruits. After overwintering a majority of oospores (50-90%) kept their viability. Sometimes, loss of viability of some oospores was caused by the external negative influence. About 25% of oospores formed at crossing between current Russian P. infestans strains were capable to germinate. Treatment with negative temperature (-12 degrees C) or Trichoderma suspension increased percentage of germinated oospores. In some field trials, the oospores caused affection of quite many of potato plants. However, in other trials only particular plants or no plants were affected. Tomato germlings were affected only under unfavourable conditions.

RESUMEN

The mucous layer that covers the intestinal absorptive surface acts as a barrier against bacterial translocation. The chicken gut contains a diverse bacterial population which interacts with the mucous layer. In this report, we studied the effect of changing the intestinal microbial populations on mucin dynamics by feeding 1-d-old chicks a control diet or that diet containing either antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) or a probiotic product for 14 d. Dietary AGP increased the proportions of Bifidobacterium species in the duodenum compared with the other groups. In AGP-fed chicks, the villous surface area was increased in the jejunum, goblet cell density was greater in the jejunum and ileum, and mucin glycoprotein levels in the duodenum were lower than in the other groups (P < 0.05). Feeding AGP increased the expression of mucin mRNA in the jejunum and ileum compared with controls. The dietary probiotic increased the proportion of Lactobacillus species in the ileum compared with the controls (P < 0.05) and significantly enlarged the goblet cell "cup" area throughout the small intestine compared with the other groups. Expression of mucin mRNA and the levels of mucin glycoprotein were greater in the jejunum of the probiotic-fed chicks compared with controls (P < 0.05). Neither the probiotic nor AGP treatments affected the thickness of the mucous adherent layer. These results indicate that both probiotic and AGP altered processes of mucin biosynthesis and/or degradation mediated via changes in the intestinal bacterial populations. These modifications in mucin dynamics influence gut function and health and may change nutrient uptake.

RESUMEN

The analysis of antiosteoporotic efficacy of alphacalcidol was made in 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). 30 RA patients received alphacalcidol in a dose 0.75-1.0 mcg/day for 12 months. 20 control RA patients did not receive the drug. Mineral density of the bone tissue (MD) of the proximal femur and low back spine was studied using double x-ray absorptiometry at the start of the treatment and 12 months after it. It was established that alphacalcidol stabilizes MD of the neck of the femur and low spine. A significant MD increase was observed in those areas of the proximal femur where cortical bone tissue prevails.

RESUMEN

In a rabbit model of Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis single doses of 10 and 2.5 mg of the glycopeptide LY333328 per kg of body weight reduced bacterial titers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) almost as rapidly as ceftriaxone at 10 mg/kg/h (changes in log CFU, -0.29 +/- 0.21 and -0.26 +/- 0.22 versus -0.34 +/- 0.15/ml/h). A dose of 1 mg/kg was bacteriostatic (change in log CFU, 0.01 +/- 0.11/ml/h). In two animals receiving LY333328 at a dose of 40 mg/kg the bacterial titers were reduced by 0.54 and 0.51 log CFU/ml/h. The penetration of CSF by LY333328 was 1 to 5%. The concentrations of lipoteichoic and teichoic acids in CSF and neuronal damage were similar in ceftriaxone- and LY333328-treated animals.

RESUMEN

Clinico-experimental investigations of Vitaflon in cardiosurgery of growing organism have shown that Vitaflon is a firm, plastic and good material for patches of different size and form, has high thrombus resistance. Inflammatory alterations in the surrounding tissues were not pronounced. The ingrowth of the connective tissue elements into the pores of the patch and its endothelialization were noted. Since 1996 the material has been used as patches in surgical correction of congenital heart diseases. The follow-up of the patients during 4 years failed to find symptoms of recanalization, thrombotic and infectious complications. Vitaflon can be widely used as a plastic material in cardiosurgery for congenital heart diseases.

RESUMEN

In a rabbit model of Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, 5 mg of gemifloxacin mesylate (SB-265805) per kg/h reduced the bacterial titers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) almost as rapidly as 10 mg of ceftriaxone per kg/h (Deltalog CFU/ml/h +/- standard deviation [SD], -0.25 +/- 0.09 versus -0.38 +/- 0.11; serum and CSF concentrations of gemifloxacin were 2.1 +/- 1.4 mg/liter and 0.59 +/- 0.38 mg/liter, respectively, at 24 h). Coadministration of 1 mg of dexamethasone per kg did not affect gemifloxacin serum and CSF levels (2.7 +/- 1.4 mg/liter and 0.75 +/- 0.34 mg/liter, respectively, at 24 h) or activity (Deltalog CFU/ml/h +/- SD, -0.26 +/- 0.11).

RESUMEN

Experiments were conducted on rats to study the antioxidant effects of amtisol and trimethasidin (25 mg/kg) in incomplete cerebral ischemia complicated by hypoxia. Amtisol as well as trimethasidin inhibited activation of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and prevented decrease in activity of the antioxidant system. In in vitro experiments amtisol and trimethasidin blocked epinephrine auto-oxidation. Amtisol inhibited ascorbate-dependent LPO in the liposomes and metabolizing model system, inhibited fermentative NADP-dependent POL in brain tissue homogenates.
