RESUMEN

Patients with vitiligo incur direct and indirect costs associated with their condition; however, data regarding the economic burden of vitiligo are scarce and outdated. In this retrospective cohort analysis of the Merative MarketScan Commercial Database, healthcare costs and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) were evaluated among United States patients with vitiligo. Patients with vitiligo were matched (1:2) with individuals without vitiligo (controls) between January 2007 and December 2021. Outcomes included all-cause and vitiligo-related costs (2021 dollars) and all-cause HCRU, including mental health-related HCRU, during a 1-year postindex period. Subgroup analyses were completed for patients on vitiligo treatments with systemic effects (such as phototherapy and oral steroids) or a new mental health diagnosis. The analysis was focused solely on direct costs. Baseline demographics were well-balanced between matched vitiligo (49,512) and control (99,024) cohorts. Patients with vitiligo incurred significantly higher all-cause ($15,551 vs $7735) and vitiligo-related ($3490 vs $54) costs than controls (P < .0001). All-cause and mental health-related HCRU were also significantly higher among patients with vitiligo (P < .0001). Differences in all-cause and vitiligo-related healthcare costs remained significantly higher in patients on treatments with systemic effects/mental health diagnoses than in controls (P < .0001). Taken together, healthcare costs and HCRU were significantly higher among patients with vitiligo than among controls.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease, and previous studies suggested a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and NAFLD. It is suggested that vitamin D supplementation may have significant beneficial effect on liver biochemistry and histology. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the degree of possible steatosis regression using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) in NAFLD patients with vitamin D deficiency after vitamin D supplementation and evaluating its effect on lipid profile and transaminases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 100 NAFLD patients with vitamin D deficiency. They received 10000 IU/week of vitamin D orally for 3 months. CAP was used to assess hepatic steatosis and fibrosis before/after intervention. Transaminases, lipid profile, and vitamin D levels were evaluated before/after treatment. RESULTS: Serum AST, ALT, cholesterol, TG, LDL and HDL showed a significant reduction posttreatment in patients with both normal and elevated baseline levels ( P < 0.001). The posttreatment mean CAP showed a significant reduction (300.44 ±â€…37.56 vs. 265 ±â€…36.19 dB/ml) ( P  < 0.001), and there was a significant improvement in the mean fibrosis values by LSM (5.32 ±â€…1.53 vs. 4.86 ±â€…1.28 KPa) ( P  = 0.001). After supplementation, serum vitamin D level was raised significantly in the majority of patients ( P  < 0.001); however, only 13% of them reached sufficient levels (>30 ng/ml), insufficient levels (20-29 ng/ml) was reached in 83% and 5% showed vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml). CONCLUSION: A significant improvement was detected in hepatic steatosis (by CAP); mean values of LSM, transaminases and lipid profile after three months of oral vitamin D supplementation.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the outcomes of bipolar Transurethral Enucleation Resection of the Prostate (TUERP) and simple retropubic prostatectomy in patients with prostate volumes larger than 80 cc. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective randomized study included all patients amenable to surgeries for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with prostate size over 80 cc at a tertiary care hospital between January 2020 to February 2022. Bipolar TUERP and Retropubic open prostatectomy techniques were compared regarding patients' demographics, intraoperative parameters, outcomes, and peri-operative complications. RESULTS: Ninety patients were included in our study and randomly assigned to bipolar TUERP (Group 1 = 45 patients) and retropubic open prostatectomy (Group 2 = 45 patients). The TUERP group demonstrated significantly lower operative time (77 ± 11 minutes vs. 99 ± 14 minutes, p < 0.001), hemoglobin drop (median = 1.1 vs. 2.5, p < 0.001), and resected tissue weight (71 ± 6.6 cc vs. 84.5 ± 10.6 cc, p < 0.001). Postoperatively, the TUERP group demonstrated significantly lower catheter time (median = 2 vs. 7 days, p < 0.001) and less hospital stay. IPSS, Qmax, and patient satisfaction were better in the TUERP group within six months of surgery. We reported 90-day complications after TUERP in 13.3% of patients compared to 17.8% after retropubic prostatectomy, with a statistically insignificant difference. Urethral stricture predominated after TUERP, while blood transfusion dominated in retropubic prostatectomy. CONCLUSIONS: The present study found that TUERP had equivalent efficacy and safety to open retropubic prostatectomy for patients with BPH and prostate volumes > 80 ml.

Wounds can be a result of surgery, an accident, or other factors. There is still a challenge to find effective topical wound-healing agents. This study aims to investigate the wound-healing activity of chemical and green synthesized chitosan nanoparticles (Ch-NPs) using Lawsonia inermis leaves extract. The nanoparticles were morphologically and chemically characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Forty-five adult female albino rats were randomly divided into three groups. The cutaneous surgical wounds were topically treated with 0.9% normal saline (control group), green Ch-NPs (second group), and chemical Ch-NPs gels (third group), respectively. The clinical picture of wounds and histopathological changes were assessed on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 21st days post-treatment. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed great crystallinity and purity of nanoparticles. The studied nanoparticles increased the wound contraction percent (WC%), reduced healing time and wound surface area (WSA), and these results were backed up by histological findings that indicated improved epithelialization, dermal differentiation, collagen deposition, and angiogenesis in treated rats compared with control rats (p < 0.05). We concluded that the wound-healing effects of the studied nanoparticles are encouraging, and further studies for complete assessment are still needed.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incremental prognostic role of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and exercise capacity (EC), two independent prognostic tests in the assessment of patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: The cohort consisted of patients who had clinically indicated exercise stress testing and CACS assessment from January 1, 2015, to September 30, 2021, with a median of 27 days between each other. Exercise capacity was defined by peak metabolic equivalents of task (METs) achieved during exercise stress test. The CACS was determined by the Agatston method. Patients were observed from the latest test date to incident major adverse cardiac events (inclusive of all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, late revascularization, and admission for heart failure). RESULTS: There were a` total of 1932 patients in the study population (mean age, 56±12 years; 42% female, 48% hypertension, 21% diabetes, 48% dyslipidemia). Peak METs below 6 was achieved in 8% of patients, and the median (interquartile range) CACS was 9 (0-203). In multivariable Cox regression models, both CACS (1 unit increase in log CACS: hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.34; P=.003;) and EC (1 unit increase in peak METs: hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.81 to 0.97; P=.01) were independently associated with outcomes. Using CACS+EC added incremental prognostic value over clinical and fitness models (C index increase from 0.68 to 0.75; P=.015). Incident event rates increased across categories of CACS and EC. CONCLUSION: Our analysis found that CACS and EC have complementary risk-stratifying roles in coronary artery disease.

Wound healing is one of the utmost medical issues in human and veterinary medicine, which explains the urgent need for developing new agents that possess wound healing activities. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of green and chemical zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) for wound healing. ZnO-NPs (green using Lawsonia inermis leaf extract and chemical) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The gels containing the nanomaterials were prepared and inspected. Forty-five albino rats were divided into three groups, the control group was treated with normal saline 0.9%, and the other two groups were treated with gels containing green or chemical ZnO-NPs, respectively. On the 3rd, 7th, 14th, and 21st days post-treatment (PT), the wounds were clinicopathologically examined. Both nanomaterials have good crystallinity and high purity, but green ZnO-NPs have a longer nanowire length and diameter than chemical ZnO-NPs. The formed gels were highly viscous with a pH of 6.5 to 7. The treated groups with ZnO-NP gels showed clinical improvement, as decreased wound surface area (WSA) percent (WSA%), increased wound contraction percent (WC%), and reduced healing time (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group. The histological scoring showed that the epithelialization score was significantly higher at the 21st day post-treatment in the treated groups than in the control group (p < 0.05), but the vasculature, necrosis, connective tissue formation, and collagen synthesis scores were mostly similar. The green and chemical ZnO-NP gels showed promising wound healing properties; however, the L. inermis-mediated ZnO-NPs were more effective.

To explore the potential alternative of anti-coccidials, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of dietary Piper sarmentosum extract (PSE) on induced coccidia infection in chickens. A total of 96-day-old chickens were randomly distributed to 1 of 3 treatment groups, including (1) control negative untreated uninfected (CN), (2) control positive untreated infected (CP), and (3) Piper sarmentosum (P. sarmentosum) extract-treated infected group (PSE). Our results demonstrated that E. tenella challenged untreated group showed a reduction (P < 0.05) in post-infection (PI) body weight compared to control negative group. However, supplementation of P. sarmentosum extract had no significant effects on body weight and cecal lesions compared with control positive group. Infected chickens fed PSE diet decreased (P < 0.05) the bloody diarrhea scores and oocyst shedding (during the day 5 to 8 post-infection) than that of CP chickens. E. tenella-challenged chickens upregulated (P < 0.05) the mRNA expression of IL-8 and Bcl-2 compared to PSE chickens, while IFN-γ compared to CN chickens. On the other hand, treatment of P. sarmentosum extract tended to increase (P < 0.05) the transcription patterns of IL-4, IL-10, CLDN 1, SOD 1, and Bax with the comparison of control positive group; however, there were no significant effects on IL-8, ZO 1, and CAT expression between the PSE and CP groups. Collectively, these findings elaborated that dietary P. sarmentosum extract exhibit potential anti-coccidial effects in controlling the coccidia infection in chickens.

ABSTRACT: Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide public health problem. Low vitamin D and its consequences among children and adolescents could be considered as one of the most important health-related problems. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in healthy Egyptian adolescents and investigate factors associated with vitamin D status.A cross-sectional study was conducted on 572 school children (270 males and 302 females) aged 14 to 18 years, who were randomly selected from high schools in one governorate in Egypt. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Vitamin D level, serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphates were measured.Vitamin D deficiency was almost present in all the studied Egyptian healthy adolescents (99%), 94.8% had vitamin D deficiency and 4.2% had vitamin D insufficiency. Girls had a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency than boys. There was a significant association between lack of physical activity, sun exposure, and vitamin D deficiency.Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are highly prevalent. In sunny countries, the special pattern of conservative clothing and the lack of outdoor physical activity might be the underlying factors for the high prevalence in females. Vitamin D supplementation seems to be mandatory to halt the problem.

The chitosan chains were integrated with MCM-48 mesoporous silica in an eco-friendly composite (CH/MCM-48) of enhanced adsorption capacity. The prepared CH/MCM-48 composite was applied in systematic retention of U (VI) as well as Sr (II) ions from water as the commonly detected radioactive pollutants. It displayed promising retention capacities of 261.3 mg/g and 328.6 mg/g for U (VI) and Sr (II) considering the equilibrium time interval that was identified after 420 min. The composite showed the kinetic behavior of the Pseudo-First order model and the isotherm properties of the Langmuir assumption. The thermodynamic assessment of the reactions validated the retention of both U (VI) and Sr (II) ions by spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic reactions. Based on the theoretical values of entropy (-5.94 kJ mol-1 (U (VI)) and -2.93 kJ mol-1 (Sr (II))), Gibbs free energy (less than 20 kJ mol-1), and Gaussian energy (5.77 kJ mol-1 (U (VI)) and 4.56 kJ mol-1 (Sr (II))) the uptake processes are related to physical adsorption reactions. The CH/MCM-48 composite is of significant recyclability and showed considerable affinities for the studied radioactive ions even in the presence of other metal ions (Cd (II), Pb (II), Zn (II), and Co (II)).

The present study aimed to investigate the possible mitigating effect of L-carnitine (LC) and/or α-tocopherol (Vit. E) administration against tilmicosin (TIL)-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Fifty-six male albino rats were divided into seven groups according to LC, Vit. E, and/or TIL administration. Control, LC, and Vit. E groups were given saline, 150 mg LC/kg body weight (BW)/day and 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW/day, respectively, orally once daily for 15 days. The TIL group was administered saline orally once daily for 15 days and a single dose of TIL (75 mg/kg BW) subcutaneously (SC) on day 14 from the starting of the experimental period (15 days). The TIL-LC, TIL-Vit. E, and TIL-LC-Vit. E groups received 150 mg LC/kg BW/day, 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW/day, and 150 mg LC/kg BW pulse 100 mg Vit. E/kg BW, respectively, orally once daily for 15 days with TIL as described above. The results revealed that the administration of TIL significantly (P ≤ 0.05) raised serum activities of heart injury indicators, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and CK-MB with substantial increase (P ≤ 0.05) in the cardiac contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased in antioxidants. The pathological changes appeared in the form of necrotic muscle fibers and massive inflammatory cellular infiltrations in the cardiac muscle and increased the caspase-3 immunohistochemical expression in the heart tissues as well. These changes were ameliorated by LC and/or Vit. E administration. In conclusion, supplementation of LC and/or Vit. E ameliorated the cardiotoxicity of the TIL SC injection in the rat.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Activation of the immune checkpoints and expression of chemokines and chemokine receptors have been reported to promote HCC progression. This study aimed to assess the differential expression of Tim-3, PD-1, and CCR5 on peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with HCV-related HCC and correlate their expression with the treatment outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study incorporated 40 patients with chronic HCV-related HCC and 40 healthy controls. Patients were radiologically assessed for hepatic focal lesions and portal vein thrombosis. Response to HCC treatment and overall survival (OS) outcomes were determined. The expression of Tim-3, PD-1, and CCR5 among CD19+, CD4+, and CD8+ lymphocytes was assessed by flow cytometry. RESULTS: Higher frequencies of CD4+ and CD8+ cells expressing each of Tim-3 and PD-1 and PD-1+CD19+ cells were observed in the HCV-related HCC patients in comparison with controls. The highest expression of Tim-3 and PD-1 was by the CD8+ cells. Strong relations were detected among PD-1+CD19+, PD-1+CD4+ and PD-1+CD8+ cells. Elevated levels of PD-1+ lymphocytes were significantly associated with poor treatment response and shorter OS. CONCLUSION: Modulation of the expression of immune checkpoints as Tim-3 and PD-1, and of CCR5 on T cells is somehow related to HCC. CD8+ T cells expressing PD-1 were the most relevant to HCC prognosis (OS and treatment response) and could represent a promising target for immune therapy against HCC. Future studies need to focus on exploring PD-1+ B cells and Tim-3+CD4+ cells, which seem to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of HCC.

BACKGROUND: The impact of hepatitis virus infection on arterial calcification (AC) was not studied. OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence, severity and distribution of AC in incident hemodialysis patients with hepatitis B and C viral infection. CASES AND METHODS: 172 stage 5 CKD adults (98 male and 74 female) were included; 58 of them were seronegative for both hepatitis B and C (SN group), 48 were positive for hepatitis B virus infection (HBV group) and 66 were hepatitis C virus positive (HCV group). Beside histopathology of the obtained arterial samples, all these cases were examined for body mass index (BMI), serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase (AP), serum albumin, uric acid (UA), alanine transaminase (ALT), parathormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23(FGF23), interleukin 6 (IL6), and 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25 (OH) vit D), hemoglobin concentration, and serum ferritin. RESULTS: 86 (50%) of the cases had AC; 11 of them were in SN group (19%), 9 in HBV group (18.8%) and all the 66 HCV group (100%). In SN group, 4 had intimal calcification, 5 had medial calcification, and 2 had both intimal and medial calcification. In HBV group, 9 had intimal calcification, while no cases were encountered with either medial or both site calcifications. In HCV group, 16 had intimal calcification, 31 had medial calcification, and 19 had both intimal and medial calcification. Calcification was in the form of spots in one case in SN group, and 6 cases in HBV group, a single plaque of calcification in 5 cases of SN group, 3 cases of HBV group, and 16 cases of HCV group, multiple plaques were detected in 4 cases in SN group, and 31 cases in HCV group, and diffuse calcification in one case in SN group, and 19 cases in HCV group. In HBV group, calcification was only detected in patients with high viremia, while all patients with low or moderate viremia were devoid of calcification. In HCV group, all patients with low viremia had intimal solitary plaque of calcification, all patients with moderate viremia had multiple plaques of medial calcification, while all patients with high viremia had diffuse intimal and medial calcification. Both groups of viral hepatitis were significantly different in comparison to SN group in either distribution or calcification score (P<0.001 in all). HBV group had significantly lower serum P, CaxP and PTH in comparison to SN group (4.6±0.66 vs. 5.45±0.77mg/dL, 36.4±7.2 vs. 44.1±8.69, and 348±65.4 vs. 405.9±83.2pg/mL, P<0.001, <0.001, and 0.035 respectively). On the other hand, HCV group did not show any significant difference in any of the studied parameters compared to SN group. CONCLUSION: HCV positive patients are more prone to develop AC that is more extensive. HBV positive patients were less likely to have arterial medial calcification, probably related to lower serum phosphorus, CaxP product and PTH. HCV infection should be added as risk factor for AC among CKD patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND: Investigating and evaluating possible alternative therapeutic strategies to control hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a critical need because of its high prevalence and being one of the most lethal cancers. Curcumin and taurine showed potent anti-tumor activities in pre-clinical and clinical studies by targeting multiple pathways. Thus, this study was designed to assess the effect of a combined treatment consisted of curcumin, piperine, and taurine on circulating levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), and microRNAs miR-141 and miR-21. METHODS: Twenty eligible HCC patients administrated an oral dose of 4 g curcumin, 40 mg piperine, and 500 mg taurine daily for three successive treatment cycles, each was a 30-day. The level of IL-10 along with the expression levels of miR-141, and miR-21 were monitored in serum before starting the treatment and after each cycle. Patients were followed-up for a period of 24 months. RESULTS: The combined treatment was able to produce a significant decrease in the levels of serum IL-10, and miR-21 while it resulted in a non-significant up-regulation of serum miR-141 expression level. At the end of the follow-up period, the median overall survival (OS) rate was found to be 17.00 months with a worse OS in patients with high baseline levels of circulating IL-10 and miR-21 compared to those with low levels. In contrast, a low baseline level of circulating miR-141 was associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: The combined treatment may be able to increase the OS rate by altering the circulating level of IL-10 and miR-21.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial calcification (AC) is a common complication in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients that starts to develop before these patients need renal replacement therapy. In these patients, calcification can involve tunica intima or tunica media. This study has looked for the prevalence, severity, and distribution of arterial wall calcification in incident hemodialysis patients through intraoperative arterial biopsy obtained during creation of arteriovenous vascular access for hemodialysis. METHODOLOGY: One hundred and seventy-two stage 5 CKD adults (98 male and 74 female) were included. Beside histopathology of the obtained arterial samples, all these cases were tested for serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase, uric acid, parathormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), and 25 hydroxy vitamin D. RESULTS: Eighty six (50%) of the cases had AC (group I); 29 (17%) as intimal (subgroup Ii), 36 (21%) as medial (subgroup Im), while 21 (12%) had both intimal and medial calcification (subgroup Iim). Eighty-six patients (50%) were devoid of calcification (group II). Apart from the significantly higher serum level of PTH in group I, statistical analysis failed to disclose significant difference in any of the other studied parameters between the 2 groups. On the other hand, there were significant differences in serum P, Ca × P product, serum PTH, and FGF23 between patients according to intensity of calcification. CONCLUSION: Half of incident hemodialysis CKD patients have developed AC mainly in tunica media. Discrepancy in serum P can have an impact on calcification intensity.

Punica granatum peel (PGP) is widely used in traditional medicinal purposes for chronic wounds owing to containing natural phenolics active components. In current study, active wound dressing hydrogel for chronic wound healing was prepared based on P. granatum peel crude extract (PGPC), ethyl acetate fraction (PGPEA) and their silver nanoforms (Ag-NPs). Methacrylated chitosan was synthesized as precursor to hydrogel and crosslinked by divinyl sulfone (DVS) in mild condition. Hydrogel was fully characterized by spectral morphological, mechanical and physical analyses. The integration of PGPEA silver nanoforms was formed with particle size of 15-56 nm to show minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) equal 63 for Staphylococcus aureus and 125 for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The hydrogel-based wound dressing with/without the active ingredients showed acceptable cytotoxicity against fibroblast human cells for PGPC and PGPEA fraction over the silver nanoforms. Rat as animal model was considered to show the impact of the active wound dressing on diabetic wounds which was proved by histopathological examination. In addition, the significant intensity of immunopositivity signals of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß1) and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) in the epidermal cells have revealed the efficiency of Ag NPs-PGPEA-chitosan hydrogel for chronic wound curing.

This study was designed to investigate, at the molecular level, the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of different antimicrobial resistance genes, including, extended-spectrum ß-lactamases, AmpC ß-lactamases, class 1 and 2 integrons, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from clinical settings in Egypt. A total of 126 nonduplicate Gram-negative isolates were recovered from different clinical samples taken from hospitalized patients in Egypt in 2014. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that, 93.6% (118/126) of the isolates had a multidrug-resistant phenotype. Interestingly, we reported a high level of antimicrobial resistance nearly for all tested antibiotics; to our knowledge, this is the first report from Egypt indicating very high level of antibiotic resistance in Egypt. Polymerase chain reaction screening and DNA sequencing revealed that, 75.4% (95/126) of the isolates harbored at least one extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-encoding gene, with blaCTX-M being the most prevalent (65.9%), followed by blaSHV (46.8%). The AmpC ß-lactamase, blaCMY, was detected in 7.1% (9/126) of bacterial isolates, with blaCMY-42 being the most prevalent. Class 1 integrons were detected in 50.8% (64/126) of the isolates, and class 2 integrons were detected in 2.4% (3/126) of the isolates. The plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance gene, qnr, was detected in 58.7% (74/126) of the tested isolates, with qnrS being the most prevalent. Several antimicrobial resistance determinants were identified in Egypt for the first time, such as SHV-27, SHV-28, SHV-33, SHV-63, SHV-71, SHV-82, SHV-142, CMY-42, CMY-6, and the new CMY-72 like. This study highlights the importance of the conscious use of conventional antimicrobials to overcome the multidrug resistance problem.

AIMS: As a source of growth factors and with its cytoprotective properties, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) received considerable attention in regenerative medicine. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the protective efficacy of PRP against γ-radiation-induced nephrotoxicity. MAIN METHODS: Forty male rats were distributed in four groups: 1) control, 2) PRP, 3) Radiation, and 4) PRP + radiation. Nephrotoxicity was examined in rats after a whole body γ-irradiation at a single dose of 8 Gy. Activated PRP (0.5 ml/kg BW) was injected subcutaneously twice weekly for three successive weeks prior to γ-irradiation. At the end of the experiment, creatinine, urea, albumin, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) serum levels, as well as renal relative gene expression level of kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) were estimated. Further, malondialdehyde level, nitric oxide content and reduced glutathione content in addition to superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were measured. Moreover, the expression levels of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X (Bax), and caspase-3 proteins were assayed. KEY FINDINGS: PRP pre-treatment significantly reduced the radiation-induced abnormalities in kidney histology and attenuated the induced cell injury. Furthermore, PRP notably ameliorated the state of oxidative stress and appeared to inhibit the induced apoptosis. SIGNIFICANCE: This study lends a probable protective role of PRP against γ-radiation-induced nephrotoxicity which can highlight the possibilities of its application as a complementary procedure during radiotherapy.

Cerium(IV), Thorium(IV) and Uranyl(II) complexes with the ammonium salt of sulfasalazine drug (H2SSZ, HL-) have been studied. The structures of the complexes were elucidated using elemental analysis, IR and mass spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The complexes were isolated in 1:1 and 1:2 (M:L) ratios. The solid monocomplexes (1:1) (M:H(2)SSZ) were isolated in the general formulae [UO2(L)(H2O)2].2H2O and [M(L)(X)z(H2O)n].yH2O (M=Ce(IV) and Th(IV) (X=NO3, z=2, n=2, y=0-3)). The biscomplexes (1:2) (M:H2SSZ) solid chelates found to have the general formulae [UO2(HL)2].2H2O and [M(L)2(H2O)2] (M=Ce(IV) and Th(IV)). The thermal decomposition of the complexes should be discussed in relation to structure, and the thermodynamic parameters of the decomposition stages were evaluated applying Coats-Redfern and Horwitz-Mitzger methods.
