OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effect of total saponins of Panax japonicus (TSPJ) against CCl4-induced acute liver injury (ALI) in rats and explore the underlying pharmacological mechanisms. METHODS: Male SD rat models of CCl4-induced ALI were given intraperitoneal injections of distilled water, 100 mg/kg biphenyl bisabololol, or 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg TSPJ during modeling (n=8). Liver functions (AST, ALT, TBil and ALP) of the rats were assessed and liver pathologies were observed with HE staining. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expressions of PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway molecules in liver tissue; ELISA was used to determine the levels of T-SOD, GSH-Px, and MDA. Western blotting was performed to detect the expression levels of PI3K-Akt and SIRT6-NF-κB pathways in the liver tissue. RESULTS: Network pharmacological analysis indicated that the key pathways including PI3K/Akt mediated the therapeutic effect of TSPJ on ALI. In the rat models of ALI, treatments with biphenyl bisabololol and TSPJ significantly ameliorated CCl4-induced increase of serum levels AST, ALT, ALP, TBil and MDA and decrease of T-SOD and GSH-Px levels (all P < 0.01). The rat models of ALI showed significantly increased expression of p-NF-κB (P < 0.01), decreased expressions of PI3K, p-Akt and SIRT6 proteins, and elevated expression levels of p-NF-κB, TNF-α and IL-6 proteins in the liver, which were all significantly improved in the treatment groups (P < 0.05 or 0.01). CONCLUSION: TSPJ can effectively alleviate CCl4-induced ALI in rats by suppressing inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in the liver via regulating the PI3K/Akt and SIRT6/NF-κB pathways.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive analysis of peripheral immune cell phenotypes and tumor immune-gene expression profiles in locally advanced pancreatic cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in a phase II clinical trial was carried out. METHODS: Patients were treated with neoadjuvant modified folinic acid, fluorouracil, irinotecan hydrochloride, oxaliplatin (mFOLFIRINOX) followed by surgery and adjuvant gemcitabine at the Asan Medical Center. Correlations between survival outcomes and baseline peripheral immune cells and their changes during preoperative chemotherapy were analyzed. Patients who had surgery were divided into two groups according to achievement of disease-free survival >10 months (achieved versus failed). Differential expression and pathway analysis of immune-related genes were carried out using the Nanostring platform, and immune cells within the tumor microenvironment were compared by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Forty-four patients were treated in the phase II clinical trial. Higher baseline CD14+CD11c+HLA-DR+ monocytes (P = 0.044) and lower Foxp3+CD4+ T cells (P = 0.02) were associated with poor progression-free survival of neoadjuvant mFOLFIRINOX. During the preoperative chemotherapy, PD-1 T cells significantly decreased (P = 0.0110). Differential expression and pathway analysis of immune-genes from the resected tumor after neoadjuvant treatment revealed transforming growth factor-ß pathway enrichment and higher expression of MARCO (adjusted P < 0.05) associated with early recurrence. Enrichment of the Th1 pathway and higher peritumoral CD8+ T cells (P = 0.0103) were associated with durable disease-free survival from surgery (>10 months) following neoadjuvant mFOLFIRINOX. CONCLUSIONS: Our results identify potential immune biomarkers for locally advanced pancreatic cancer and provide insights into pancreatic cancer immunity.

Increased cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CSNA) is a key feature of heart failure (HF) and is associated with poor outcome. There is evidence that central angiotensinergic mechanisms contribute to the increased CSNA in HF, but the central sites involved are unknown. In an ovine, rapid pacing model of HF, we investigated the contribution of the lamina terminalis and area postrema to the increased CSNA and also the responses to fourth ventricular infusion of the angiotensin type 1 receptor antagonist losartan. Ablation of the area postrema or sham lesion (n = 6/group), placement of lamina terminalis lesion electrodes (n = 5), and insertion of a cannula into the fourth ventricle (n = 6) were performed when ejection fraction was ~ 50%. When ejection fraction was < 40%, recording electrodes were implanted, and after 3 days, resting CSNA and baroreflex control of CSNA were measured before and following lesion of the lamina terminalis, in groups with lesion or sham lesion of the area postrema and before and following infusion of losartan (1.0 mg/h for 5 h) into the fourth ventricle. In conscious sheep with HF, lesion of the lamina terminalis did not significantly change CSNA (91 ± 2 vs. 86 ± 3 bursts/100 heart beats), whereas CSNA was reduced in the group with lesion of the area postrema (89 ± 3 to 45 ± 10 bursts/100 heart beats, P < 0.01) and following fourth ventricular infusion of losartan (89 ± 3 to 48 ± 8 bursts/100 heartbeats, P < 0.01). These findings indicate that the area postrema and brainstem angiotensinergic mechanisms may play an important role in determining the increased CSNA in HF.

This retrospective study investigated the efficiency of nutritional support in unresectable locally advanced oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LAOSCC) patients who received concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) based on 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin. In the routine care group, 63 patients served as historical controls and received nutrition support in a reactive manner. In addition, 57 patients in the nutritional support group received timely diet counselling, oral nutritional supplements, enteral nutrition and/or parenteral nutrition during CCRT. This support was based on scores from nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS-2002) after June 2014. The nutritional support group had significant advantages over the routine care group with respect to the incidence of neutropenia, the objective response rate, the change in serum albumin and the lengths of hospital stay. In addition, the nutritional support group had significantly higher levels of IgG and IL-2, higher proportions of NK, CD3+ and CD4+ cells as well as a higher ratio of CD4+ /CD8+ cells than the routine care group (p < .05). In contrast, the nutritional support group had a significantly lower level of IL-6. In conclusion, the current nutritional care programme could bring benefits of improving treatment compliance, reducing toxicity and lengths of hospital stay and enhancing the immune response.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia that leads to increasing death and mental disability among humans. Current therapy of AD mainly relies on the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) or antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), which only relieve the symptoms of the disease but not halt its progression. Nevertheless, Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are highly prized as many bioactive components isolated from TCM are beneficial for treating AD. In this review, we summarize the latest information on TCM and the bioactive components according to their mechanistic role in alleviating AD. They act as modulators of α- and ß-secretases, and inhibitors of betaamyloid (Aß) aggregation. Some of them suppress Aß-induced neuronal cytotoxicity and inflammation. Hence, this work has demonstrated the feasibility of applying TCM in AD therapy and the possibility of screening of constituents in TCM in the near future.

Male C57BL/6J mice treated with D-galactose (DG) were used to examine the effects of ergothioneine (EGT), melatonin (MEL), or their combination (EGT+MEL) on learning and memory abilities. The mice were divided into five groups and injected subcutaneously with DG (0.3 mL of 1% DG/mouse) except for group 1 (normal controls). Group 3 was orally supplemented with EGT [0.5 mg/kg body weight (bw)], group 4 with MEL (10 mg/kg bw, p.o.), and group 5 with EGT+MEL. EGT and MEL were provided daily for 88 days, while DG was provided between days 7 to 56. Active avoidance task and Morris water-maze task were used to evaluate learning and memory abilities. DG treatment markedly increased escape latency and decreased the number of avoidance in the active avoidance test, whereas EGT and MEL alone significantly improved the performance. DG also impaired the learning and memory abilities in the water-maze task, and EGT and MEL alone also significantly improved the performance. EGT+MEL produced the strongest effects in both tasks. EGT and MEL alone markedly decreased ß-amyloid protein accumulation in the hippocampus and significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation and maintained glutathione/glutathione disulfide ratio and superoxide dismutase activity in brain tissues of DG-treated mice. MEL alone completely prevented the rise in brain acetylcholine esterase activity induced by DG, whereas EGT and EGT+MEL were only partially effective. Overall, EGT, MEL, and, in particular, the combination of EGT and MEL effectively protect against learning and memory deficits in C57BL/6J mice treated with DG, possibly through attenuation of oxidative damage.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nano-selenium (nano-Se) on performance, meat quality, immune function, oxidation resistance, and tissue selenium content in broilers. A total of five hundred forty 1-d-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 treatments with each treatment being applied to 6 replicates of 18 chicks. The 5 treatments consisted of corn-soybean meal-based diets supplemented with 0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mg/kg of nano-Se. The selenium content of the unsupplemented control diet was 0.09 mg/kg for the starter phase (0 to 21 d) and 0.08 mg/kg for the grower phase (22 to 42 d). There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in performance, meat color, or immune organ index (thymus, bursa, and spleen) due to supplementation with nano-Se. On d 42, a significant quadratic effect of nano-Se was observed on glutathione peroxidase activity, free radical inhibition, contents of IgM, glutathione, and malondialdehyde in serum, on glutathione peroxidase activity, free radical inhibition in liver, and on glutathione peroxidase activity in muscle, with birds fed 0.30 mg/kg of nano-Se exhibiting the best effect and birds fed 2.0 mg/kg of nano-Se showing the worst effect on these parameters. Liver and muscle selenium content increased linearly and quadratically as the dietary nano-Se level increased (P < 0.01), and reached the highest value when 2.0 mg/kg of nano-Se was fed. Based on a consideration of all experiment indexes, 0.3 to 0.5 mg/kg is suggested to be the optimum level of supplementation of nano-Se, and the maximum supplementation of nano-Se could not be more than 1.0 mg/kg in broilers.

We investigated the mechanisms responsible for increased blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) caused by 2-3 days dehydration (DH) both in vivo and in situ preparations. In euhydrated (EH) rats, systemic application of the AT(1) receptor antagonist Losartan and subsequent pre-collicular transection (to remove the hypothalamus) significantly reduced thoracic (t)SNA. In contrast, in DH rats, Losartan, followed by pre-collicular and pontine transections, failed to reduce tSNA, whereas transection at the medulla-spinal cord junction massively reduced tSNA. In DH but not EH rats, selective inhibition of the commissural nucleus tractus solitarii (cNTS) significantly reduced tSNA. Comparable data were obtained in both in situ and in vivo (anaesthetized/conscious) rats and suggest that following chronic dehydration, the control of tSNA transfers from supra-brainstem structures (e.g. hypothalamus) to the medulla oblongata, particularly the cNTS. As microarray analysis revealed up-regulation of AP1 transcription factor JunD in the dehydrated cNTS, we tested the hypothesis that AP1 transcription factor activity is responsible for dehydration-induced functional plasticity. When AP1 activity was blocked in the cNTS using a viral vector expressing a dominant negative FosB, cNTS inactivation was ineffective. However, tSNA was decreased after pre-collicular transection, a response similar to that seen in EH rats. Thus, the dehydration-induced switch in control of tSNA from hypothalamus to cNTS seems to be mediated via activation of AP1 transcription factors in the cNTS. If AP1 activity is blocked in the cNTS during dehydration, sympathetic activity control reverts back to forebrain regions. This unique reciprocating neural structure-switching plasticity between brain centres emphasizes the multiple mechanisms available for the adaptive response to dehydration.

An outbreak of post-acupuncture cutaneous infections due to Mycobacterium abscessus occurred in Ansan, Korea, from November 2007 through to May 2008. During this time a prospective, observational, non-randomized study was conducted involving 52 patients that were diagnosed with cutaneous M. abscessus infection. We compared the clinical response between patients treated with clarithromycin plus amikacin regimen and those treated with clarithromycin plus moxifloxacin regimens with regard to time to resolution of the cutaneous lesions. Among the 52 study patients, 33 were treated with clarithromycin plus amikacin, and 19 were treated with clarithromycin plus moxifloxacin. The baseline characteristics for the treatment groups were not significantly different, except for initial surgical excision (n = 27 vs. 6, respectively, p = 0.001). The median time (weeks) to resolution of the lesions in the clarithromycin plus moxifloxacin-treated subjects was significantly shorter than that in the clarithromycin plus amikacin-treated subjects (17 ± 1.1 vs. 20 ± 0.9, respectively, p = 0.017). With adjustments for age, location of lesions, prior incision and drainage, and excision during medical therapy, clarithromycin plus moxifloxacin-treated subjects were more likely to have resolved lesions (hazard ratio, 0.387; 95% confidence interval, 0.165-0.907; p = 0.029). The frequency of drug-related adverse events in the two treatment groups was not significantly different (n = 18 vs. 14, respectively; p = 0.240). The most common adverse event was gastrointestinal discomfort. The results of our study showed that the combination regimen of clarithromycin and moxifloxacin resulted in a better clinical response than a regimen of clarithromycin plus amikacin when used for treatment of cutaneous M. abscessus infection.

Although outbreaks of Mycobacterium abscessus infection have been reported, none of these reports has identified the potential sources of infection and modes of transmission. In April 2008, we identified and investigated an outbreak of M. abscessus skin and soft tissue infections following acupuncture among the patients who visited an oriental medical clinic. Active surveillance of patients who had visited the clinic was conducted to define the extent of the outbreak. Environmental cultures and a case-control study were performed to elucidate the source of infection and mode of transmission. From 1002 patients interviewed, 109 patients were identified as having suffered M. abscessus skin and soft tissue infections at acupuncture sites. A single strain of M. abscessus was isolated from the wounds of 31 patients and nine environmental samples, including a diluted glutaraldehyde solution. The case-control study revealed that a higher numbers of visits to the clinic for acupuncture (adjusted OR (aOR) 20.12; 95% CI 4.34-93.35) and the use of interferential current therapy or low-frequency therapy (aOR 36.12; 95% CI 5.54-235.44) were associated with the development of M. abscessus infection. The contaminated diluted glutaraldehyde solution that was used to disinfect the physical therapy devices may have been the source of the outbreak of M. abscessus infection in the 109 patients who underwent acupuncture.

In the present study, we investigated the in vitro effect of resveratrol (RSVL), a polyphenolic phytoestrogen, on cell proliferation and osteoblastic maturation in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (HBMSC) cultures. RSVL (10(-8)-10(-5) M) increased cell growth dose-dependently, as measured by [(3)H]-thymidine incorporation, and stimulated osteoblastic maturation as assessed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition into the extracellular matrix, and the expression of osteoblastic markers such as RUNX2/CBFA1, Osterix and Osteocalcin in HBMSCs cell cultures. Further studies found that RSVL (10(-6)M) resulted in a rapid activation of both extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in HBMSCs cultures. The effects of RSVL were mimicked by 17beta-estrodial (10(-8) M) and were abolished by estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI182780. An ERK1/2 pathway inhibitor, PD98059, significantly attenuated RSVL-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation, consistent with the reduction of cell proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation as well as expression of osteoblastic markers. In contrast, SB203580, a p38 MAPK pathway blocker, blocked RSVL-induced p38 phosphorylation, but resulted in an increase of cell proliferation and a more osteoblastic maturation. These data suggest that RSVL stimulates HBMSCs proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation through an ER-dependent mechanism and coupling to ERK1/2 activation.

The effects of water extracts from Cassia tora L. (WECT) treated with different degrees of roasting on benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-induced DNA damage in human hepatoma cell line HepG2 were investigated via the comet assay without exogenous activation mixtures, such as S9 mix. WECT alone, at concentrations of 0.1-2 mg/mL, showed neither cytotoxic nor genotoxic effect toward HepG2 cells. B[a]P-induced DNA damage in HepG2 cells could be reduced by WECT in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.05). At a concentration of 1 mg/mL, the inhibitory effects of WECT on DNA damage were in the order unroasted (72%) > roasted at 150 degrees C (60%) > roasted at 250 degrees C (23%). Ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase activity of HepG2 cells was effectively inhibited by WECT, and a similar trend of inhibition was observed in the order unroasted (64%) > roasted at 150 degrees C (42%) > roasted at 250 degrees C (18%). The activity of NADPH cytochrome P-450 reductase was also decreased by unroasted and 150 degrees C-roasted samples (50% and 38%, respectively). Furthermore, glutathione S-transferase activity was increased by treatment with unroasted (1.26-fold) and 150 degrees C-roasted (1.35-fold) samples at 1 mg/mL. In addition, the contents of anthraquinones (AQs) in WECT, including chrysophanol, emodin, and rhein, were decreased with increasing roasting temperature. Each of these AQs also demonstrated significant antigenotoxic activity in the comet assay. The inhibitory effects of chrysophanol, emodin, and rhein on B[a]P-mediated DNA damage in HepG2 cells were 78, 86, and 71%, respectively, at 100 microM. These findings suggested that the decreased antigenotoxicity of the roasted samples might be due to a reduction in their AQs content.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Yangjing Decoction (YJD) to promote ovulation and to explore its mechanism. METHODS: The clinical effect of YJD in treating patients of functional non-ovulation and changes of gonadotropic hormone, sex hormone and diameter of main follicle before and after treatment were observed. In experimental study, the influence of YJD on monoamine neurotransmitter of hypothalamus, endorphin (beta-EOP), serum sex hormone, trace element, endometrium and histomorphology of ovary were observed. RESULTS: In the 36 patients observed clinically, the ovulation rate was 61.1%, the serum contents of follicular stimulation hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E2) increased and the diameter of main follicle enlarged significantly after treatment (P < 0.01, P < 0.001). The experimental study showed that the totals of follicle at different levels, the corpus luteum and the proportion of superior follicle in ovary were improved obviously in the YJD group as compared with those in the control group. After YJD treatment the hypothalamus contents of monoamine neurotransmitter, including norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) increased, the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 5-hydroxyindoleaceticacid (5-HIAA) and beta-EOP decreased significantly, and the NE/DA ratio and NE/5-HT ratio elevated obviously (P < 0.05, P < 0.001). The serum levels of E2, P and trace elements, including Zn, Cu and Fe increased significantly (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: YJD is an effective recipe in promoting ovulation, the effect may be achieved through the multi-linked, multi-systemetic synthetic effect of hypothalamus, hypophysis and ovary, etc.

Glycitein (4',7-dihydroxy-6-methoxyisoflavone) accounts for 5-10% of the total isoflavones in soy food products. The biological activity of this compound has not been reported to date, although numerous studies have been performed with the other soy isoflavones, daidzein and genistein. Glycitein was isolated from soy germ to 99% purity. Weaning female B6D2F1 mice were dosed with glycitein (3 mg/day), genistein (3 mg/day), and diethylstilbestrol (DES) (0.03 microg/day) in 5% Tween 80 by gavage for 4 days. A control group received an equal volume of 5% Tween 80 solution daily. The uterine weight increased 150% with glycitein (p < 0.001), 50% with genistein (p < 0. 001), and 60% with DES (p < 0.001) compared with the control group. DES, 17beta-estradiol, and three isoflavones (daidzein, genistein, and glycitein) were examined for their competitive binding abilities with 17beta-((3)H)estradiol to the estrogen receptor proteins of the B6D2F1 mouse uterine cytosol. The concentrations of each compound required to displace 50% of the ((3)H)estradiol at 5 nM in the competitive binding assay were 1.15 nM DES, 1.09 nM 17beta-estradiol, 0.22 microM genistein, 4.00 microM daidzein, and 3.94 microM glycitein. These data indicated that glycitein has weak estrogenic activity, comparable to that of the other soy isoflavones but much lower than that of DES and 17beta-estradiol.

The effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) at Neiguan P6 served as a main point and Jianshi P5 as an adjunct point on sino-atrial conduction were studied in 10 patients with normal sinus nodal function. The results were as follows: During EA and in period of intrinsic heart rate (IHR0) the sinoatrial conduction times (SACT) from sinus node electrogram were significantly shortened than that in control, (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). But the SACT could not be further shortened by stimulating the acupoints during IHR0 (P < 0.05). It is suggested that EA at Neiguan P6 as a main point could improve sino-atrial conductivity in most patients with normal sinus node function, which seems to be mediated by autonomic nerve system. The normal value of SACT after autonomic nerve blockade needs to be established.

A well-defined, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-containing fiber pathway, the ventral hypothalamic tract (VHT), is described by immunostaining in fetal rhesus macaques (109-156 days gestation). The VHT arises above the lateral aspects of the optic chiasm near the supraoptic nucleus, and courses ventromedially close to the ventral hypothalamic surface to terminate in the infundibulum and zona externa of the median eminence. It is formed by the confluence of GnRH-immunopositive (GnRH+) axons from local neurons, from a few GnRH+ cells in the inferior thalamic peduncle, and probably from more anterior neurons in the septum and preoptic area. Bipolar GnRH+ neurons contributing directly to the VHT are grouped at its origin dorsolateral to the optic chiasm, dorsal and medial to the optic tracts, at the infundibular lip, and within the pathway between. At the infundibular lip, GnRH+ perikarya are generally lateral or ventral to the infundibular (arcuate) nucleus, and are rarely within the nucleus itself. Cell bodies here are sometimes tripolar, but GnRH+ intercellular contacts are seldom seen. A few VHT fibers extend to the ventral surface of the brain just beneath the pia mater. Abundant capillaries in the subarachnoid space suggest a possible route for delivery of GnRH to the adenohypophysis in early gestation, before maturation of the hypophysial portal system occurs. Posterior to the infundibulum, a few VHT fibers are joined by descending periventricular fibers forming a dense fiber band beneath the premammillary recess of the third ventricle. Totals of GnRH+ cell bodies in the prosencephalon of the fetal rhesus macaque are estimated to be 5,600 in females (n = 2) and 2,600 in males (n = 3). More than 60% of VHT neurons are located in the medial basal hypothalamus, and the majority of basal hypothalamic GnRH+ neurons (86%) are associated with the VHT. Furthermore, reports of the autonomy of the medial basal hypothalamic-hypophysial unit in control of gonadotropin secretion suggest that the VHT may be the most important GnRH system involved in primate reproduction. It is clear that fetal material may offer the best model to study the GnRH neuronal system in primates.

The distribution of serotonin (5-HT) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was examined in the hypothalamus of juvenile baboons, 24 h after infundibular stalk section. Simultaneous immunostaining for 5-HT with peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) and TH with 15 nm colloidal gold (IGS) was performed on Vibratome sections from 3 operated and 1 control female. Light microscopy revealed fine 5-HT immunopositive (5-HT+) fibers, presumably axons, in the suprachiasmatic nuclei and ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) after stalk section. In addition, focal accumulations of swollen and heavily stained 5-HT+ fibers occurred on the side of the surgical approach. Enlarged fibers were densest in the medial preoptic area, lateral and VMH areas, and the median eminence. TH immunoreactivity (TH+) in VMH cell bodies and axons was only slightly increased over that in controls. Electron microscopy of areas of 5-HT+ and TH+ overlap (medial VMH and adjacent periventricular zone) showed that 5-HT+ profiles were mostly unmyelinated axons and irregular varicosities. A few myelinated 5-HT+ axons were also observed. TH+ perikarya, dendrites, axons and terminals showed gold labeling characteristic for this enzyme. However, colocalization of 5-HT (PAP) and TH (IGS) was present in a number of fiber varicosities in experimental animals only. Both single- and double-labeled profiles occurred in individual thin sections, thus arguing against antibody cross-reactivity. These results indicate that: hypothalamic 5-HT+ fibers project to the median eminence in primates; 5-HT fibers become more obvious after stalk section due to accumulation of transmitter; focal 5-HT+ immunoreactivity in the hypothalamus can increase dramatically after distant and mild surgical trauma, and coexistence of 5-HT and TH in single neurons can appear after acute stalk section and/or trauma in experimental animals. These findings might represent uptake of exogenous 5-HT or amplified expression of endogenous neurotransmitter, suggesting that plasticity of transmitter phenotype might follow acute surgical and/or endocrine intervention in mature primate brain. Neuroendocrine studies employing the stalk-sectioned primate might thus be radically affected.
