RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been studied extensively as safe and manageable nutrient interventions for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to examine the effects of vitamins and PUFAs on cognition and to compare the effects of single and multiple nutrient subgroups in patients with MCI. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) written in English and Chinese were retrieved from eight databases, namely, PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, SinoMed, CNKI, and Wanfang Data, from their respective dates of inception until 16 July 2023. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. Meta-analyses were performed to determine the standardized mean differences (SMDs) in global cognitive function, memory function, attention, visuospatial skills, executive function, and processing speed between the supplement and control groups using 95% confidence intervals (CI) and I2. Prospero registration number: CRD42021292360. RESULTS: Sixteen RCTs that studied different types of vitamins and PUFAs were included. The meta-analysis revealed that vitamins affected global cognitive function (SMD = 0.58, 95% CI = [0.20, 0.96], P = 0.003), memory function (SMD = 2.55, 95% CI = [1.01, 4.09], P = 0.001), and attention (SMD = 3.14, 95% CI = [1.00, 5.28], P = 0.004) in patients with MCI, and PUFAs showed effects on memory function (SMD = 0.65, 95% CI = [0.32, 0.99], P < 0.001) and attention (SMD = 2.98, 95% CI = [2.11, 3.84], P < 0.001). Single vitamin B (folic acid [FA]: SMD = 1.21, 95% CI = [0.87, 1.55]) supplementation may be more effective than multiple nutrients (FA and vitamin B12: SMD = 0.71, 95% CI = [0.41, 1.01]; and FA combined with docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]: SMD = 0.58, 95% CI = [0.34, 0.83]) in global cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS: FA, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin D may improve global cognitive function, memory function, and attention in patients with MCI. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA may improve memory function and attention. We also noted that FA may exert a greater effect than a vitamin B combination (FA and vitamin B12) or the combination of FA and DHA. However, because of the low evidence-based intensity, further trials are necessary to confirm these findings.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The abrupt change of climate has led to an increasing trend of hospitalised patients in recent years. This study aimed to analyse the temperature variability (TV) associated with respiratory disease (RD) hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses. STUDY DESIGN: The generalized linear model combined with distributed lag non-linear model was used to investigate the association between TV and RD hospitalisations. METHODS: TV was determined by measuring the standard deviation of maximum and minimum temperatures for the current day and the previous 7 days. RD hospitalisations data were obtained from three major tertiary hospitals in Huaibei City, namely, the Huaibei People's Hospital, the Huaibei Hospital Of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Huaibei Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital. First, using a time series decomposition model, the seasonality and long-term trend of hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses for RD were explored in this warm temperate sub-humid monsoon climate. Second, robust models were used to analyse the association between TV and RD hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses. In addition, this study stratified results by sex, age and season. Third, using the attributable fraction (AF) and attributable number (AN), hospitalisations, hospital stays and hospital expenses for RD attributed to TV were quantified. RESULTS: Overall, 0.013% of hospitalisations were attributed to TV0-1 (i.e. TV at the current day and previous 1 day), corresponding to 220 cases, 1603 days of hospital stays and 1,308,000 RMB of hospital expenses. Females were more susceptible to TV than males, and the risk increased with longer exposure (the highest risk was seen at TV0-7 [i.e. TV at the current day and previous 7 days] exposure). Higher AF and AN were observed at ages 0-5 years and ≥65 years. In addition, it was also found that TV was more strongly linked to RD in the cool season. The hot season was positively associated with hospital stays and hospital expenses at TV0-3 to TV0-7 exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to TV increased the risk of hospitalisations, longer hospital stays and higher hospital expenses for RD. The findings suggested that more attention should be paid to unstable weather conditions in the future to protect the health of vulnerable populations.

RESUMEN

Arsenic (As) is a common environmental pollutant that seriously interferes with the normal growth of organisms. There is an urgent need to take environment-safe and efficient strategies to mitigate As toxicity. Melatonin (MT) is a pleiotropic molecule that regulates plant growth and organ development and alleviates heavy metal stresses. The experiment aims to explore the mechanism of MT in reducing arsenite toxicity by hydroponic rice seedlings. The results showed that MT application reduced the As content in rice roots and shoots by 26.4% and 37.5%, respectively, and mainly decreased As content in the soluble fractions of the rice root cell. MT application also increased the As content of chelated-soluble pectin and alkali-soluble pectin in the cell wall by 14.7% and 74.4%, respectively. It promoted the generation of the functional group of the root cell walls by the FTIR analysis, indicating that MT may promote the fixation of As on the cell wall. Meanwhile, MT contributed to scavenging excess H2O2, reducing MDA content, and maintaining normal morphology of root cells by stimulating SOD, POD and CAT activities and increasing the level of GSH. The research deepens our understanding of how MT participates in maintaining redox homeostasis in rice cells, reducing As toxicity, and decreasing As concentration in rice seedlings, thereby providing more possibilities for reducing As accumulation in rice.

RESUMEN

Green tea has been considered as a health-promoting beverage and is widely consumed worldwide. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant polyphenol derived from green tea leaves with potent antioxidative and chemopreventive activities, has been reported to offer protection against inflammation-driven tissue damage. Here, we evaluated the protective effects of EGCG against lung injury during acute pancreatitis (AP) and further revealed the detailed mechanism. The results showed that EGCG significantly attenuated l-arginine-induced AP and the consequent pulmonary damage in mice. Moreover, EGCG substantially attenuated oxidative stress and concurrently suppressed NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation in the lung. In vitro, EGCG considerably reduced the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) and oxidized mitochondrial DNA (ox-mtDNA) in alveolar macrophages (AMs) challenged with AP-conditioned plasma. Meanwhile, the amount of ox-mtDNA bound to NLRP3 decreased significantly by the treatment with EGCG, resulting in impaired NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In addition, the antagonism of NLRP3 signaling by EGCG was affected in the presence of the mtROS stimulant rotenone or scavenger Mito-TEMPO. Altogether, EGCG possesses potent activity to attenuate lung injury during AP progression by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. As for the mechanism, the EGCG-conferred restriction of NLRP3 inflammasome activation probably arises from the elimination of mtROS as well as its oxidative product ox-mtDNA, which consequently enables the protection against AP-associated lung injury.

RESUMEN

High concentrations (1.08 ng/g-3.61 mg/g) of methylsiloxanes, including cyclic analogs [octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6)], and linear analogs with 3-14 silicon atoms (L3-L14), have been detected in crude oil, additives and petroleum products from one petroleum refinery facility in China. Overall, the total mass load of Σmethylsiloxanes (1320 kg/day) in crude oil and additives was 1.5 times higher than that in petroleum products (857 kg/day), indicating their potential emissions in this facility, which were further confirmed by the find of their obvious emission through exhaust-gas (89.4 kg/day) and wastewater (4.70 kg/day). Σmethylsiloxanes emission from exhaust-gas discharge outlets of deep catalytic cracking units (60.6 kg/day) took up 68% of their total emission from all gas outlets. Overall, Σmethylsiloxanes in air (17.1-743 µg/m3) and soil samples [311 ng/g dw (dry weight) - 34.2 µg/g dw] from this facility were up to four orders of magnitude greater than those from surrounding areas, and plasma concentrations of Σmethylsiloxanes in current workers from this facility (7.4-609 ng/mL) were up to two orders of magnitude larger than those from reference group (

RESUMEN

Heightened neural excitability in infancy and childhood results in increased susceptibility to seizures. Such early-life seizures are associated with language deficits and autism that can result from aberrant development of the auditory cortex. Here, we show that early-life seizures disrupt a critical period (CP) for tonotopic map plasticity in primary auditory cortex (A1). We show that this CP is characterized by a prevalence of "silent," NMDA-receptor (NMDAR)-only, glutamate receptor synapses in auditory cortex that become "unsilenced" due to activity-dependent AMPA receptor (AMPAR) insertion. Induction of seizures prior to this CP occludes tonotopic map plasticity by prematurely unsilencing NMDAR-only synapses. Further, brief treatment with the AMPAR antagonist NBQX following seizures, prior to the CP, prevents synapse unsilencing and permits subsequent A1 plasticity. These findings reveal that early-life seizures modify CP regulators and suggest that therapeutic targets for early post-seizure treatment can rescue CP plasticity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The current prospective randomized study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of combined intrapleural cisplatin and OK-432 (picibanil) plus hyperthermotherapy in patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE). METHODS: A total of 358 patients with MPE due to end-stage malignancies were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups, A and B: the intrapleural combination of cisplatin and OK-432 with hyperthermotherapy (n = 179) or without hyperthermotherapy (n = 179), respectively. Mild toxicities such as nausea, vomiting or anorexia, bone marrow depression, and pyrexia were similar in both groups. RESULT: Patients in Group A (with hyperthermotherapy) showed a significantly higher overall response (93.4%) compared to those in Group B (79.8%, χ(2) = 43.11, p < .05). The median survival time for patients in Group A and Group B were 8.9 and 6.2 months, respectively (p > .05). After treatment, the quality of life scores were significantly increased in both groups as compared to prior treatment (p < .05). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our study suggests that combined intrapleural cisplatin and OK-432 followed by hyperthermotherapy are more effective in the control of MPE and improve patients' quality of life.
