PURPOSE: The incidence and risk factors for hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy is well-known. However, the characteristics of hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia after hemithyroidectomy have not been investigated well. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and risk factors of hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia after hemithyroidectomy. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed the medical data of 321 patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy, with or without central neck dissection, from January 2012 to April 2019. We analyzed the serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), calcium, and ionized calcium (iCa) levels serially (preoperatively and postoperatively on the operation day; days 1 and 3; and months 1, 3, 6, and 12) and evaluated risk factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia. RESULTS: The mean iPTH and calcium levels decreased significantly after hemithyroidectomy on the operation day and postoperative days 1 and 3, and returned to the preoperative level at the postoperative 1-month follow-up. The mean iCa level decreased significantly on the operation day and postoperative day 1. Transient hypoparathyroidism and transient hypocalcemia occurred in 16 (5%) and 250 (78%) participants, and they recovered to normal levels postoperatively by 1 month. Eight (2.5%) patients had mild symptoms of hypocalcemia necessitating oral calcium supplementation. No permanent hypoparathyroidism or hypocalcemia was observed. Preoperatively low serum iPTH and calcium levels were associated with transient hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia after hemithyroidectomy. CONCLUSION: Approximately 5% and 2.5% of participants showed transient hypoparathyroidism and mild symptomatic hypocalcemia after hemithyroidectomy. The risk factors for transient hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia include preoperative low serum iPTH and calcium levels.

Findings on the effects of iron on heart failure (HF) hospitalizations and mortality among patients with iron deficiency (ID) and HF remain conflicting across different studies. We performed a meta-analysis of clinical trials assessing the clinical, hematic and cardiovascular benefits of treating ID in HF patients. We completed a systematic search for studies comparing IV iron to placebo in HF patients with ID. The primary outcomes were rates of HF hospitalization and all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included change in hematic values, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class and ejection fraction. We applied a random-effects model with planned sensitivity analyses of studies with skewed effect sizes. Nine studies were included with a total of 2,261 patients. Analysis revealed that treatment of HF patients with IV iron replacement significantly reduced the odds of HF hospitalization (odds ratio (OR): 0.44; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.24 to 0.78; p=0.005, I2=67%),) but did not significantly impact all-cause mortality compared to placebo (OR: 0.89; 95%, CI: 0.67 to 1.19; p=0.44, I2: 0%). Analysis showed that IV iron treatment group had significantly higher serum ferritin, transferrin saturation and hemoglobin (Hb) levels. They also had lower NYHA class -1.90 (95% CI (-2.91 to -0.89); p<0.001, I2:89%) with higher ejection fraction 0.50 (95% CI (0.09 to 0.90) p=0.016, I2:86%). Treatment with IV iron in HF patients with ID is associated with a significant reduction of HF hospitalization but no effects on all-cause mortality. There were also significant increases in hematic values and ejection fraction with a reduction in NYHA class.

Sulforaphene (SFEN), an isothiocyanate (ITC) abundant in radish (Raphanus sativus) seeds (RS), has many health benefits, including anti-obesity effects. SFEN content is affected by multiple factors during processing, such as glucoraphenin (GLE) (the precursor of SFEN) availability, myrosinase (essential for conversion from GLE to SFEN) activity, and SFEN stability. We examined the physiochemical-properties and anti-adipogenic effects of SFEN-enriched RSE produced by two processes, roasting and micro-grinding. The roasting process lowered SFEN content and myrosinase activity over 50 °C. However, among micro-grinding conditions, smaller particle size (#2 grind, ≈11.31 µm) more effectively increased SFEN content in RS compared to larger particles (#1 grind, ≈ 179.50 µm) by accelerating available GLE and myrosinase release from RS. Grind #2 also effectively inhibited the adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes compared to #1. Thus, micro-grinding can be suggested for producing SFEN-enriched RSE with anti-adipogenic activity as a functional material for obesity prevention or treatment.

While the status of histone acetylation is a critical regulator of chromatin's structure with a significant impact on plant physiology, our understanding of epigenetic regulation in the biosynthesis of active compounds in plants is limited. In this study, Platycodon grandiflorus was treated with sodium butyrate (NaB), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, to investigate the influence of histone acetylation on secondary metabolism. Its treatment with NaB increased the acetylation of histone H3 at lysine 9, 14, and 27 and enhanced the anti-melanogenic properties of P. grandiflorus roots. Through transcriptome and differentially expressed gene analyses, we found that NaB influenced the expression of genes that were involved in both primary and secondary metabolic pathways. In addition, NaB treatment caused the accumulation of polyphenolic compounds, including dihydroquercetin, gallic acid, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The NaB-induced transcriptional activation of genes in the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway influenced the anti-melanogenic properties of P. grandiflorus roots. Overall, these findings suggest the potential of an epigenomic approach to enhance the medicinal qualities of medicinal plants.

Objectives@#This study investigates the psychological and physiological effects of a smart garden on psychiatric patients attending a day ward in a mental hospital. @*Methods@#A one-group pretest-posttest design was applied for this study. Twenty-four patients admitted to a mental hospital in ChunCheon City were included in the study and participated in a mindfulness meditation program in a cute-type indoor garden. The smart garden program was provided to the participants twice a week for 4 weeks, 10 minutes per session. A Self-Report Scale (SRS) and heart rate variability (HRV) of the patient were collected before and after experiencing the entire smart garden program. The SRS included three segments: Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck’s Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF). Furthermore, the patients’ HRV was assessed based on six parameters: standard deviation of the N-N intervals, square root of mean squared difference of successive N-N intervals (RMSSD), total power (TP), high-frequency, low-frequency, and low-frequency/high-frequency ratio. @*Results@#After attending the smart garden program, a significant difference emerged in three test areas in the SRS (BDI, BAI, and in the physical health domain of the WHOQOL-BREF; p<0.01), and in two HRV parameters (RMSSD and TP; p<0.05). @*Conclusion@#Results of the subjective and objective evaluation tools revealed that exposure to a smart garden program provides relaxing psychological and physiological effects to psychiatric patients.

Neural prostheses are systems that interact with the human nervous system to recover function lost as a result of disease by recording or stimulating neural signals. Neural implants have a variety of components, but among them, designing highly efficient wireless power transmission systems is particularly important. However, there is a problem that it is difficult to design a wireless power transmission system with high transmission efficiency because power transmission efficiency is affected by various coil parameters. In addition, nerve implants are mainly designed based on polymer substrates, but studies have not been conducted on the process of manufacturing coils based on polymer substrates. In this study, to overcome the mentioned problems, an easy and fast manufacturing process was proposed before designing a precise coil on a polymer substrate. Coil was made by manually winding the 200um copper wire, and the coil was packaged using COC. The coil feasibility test was conducted after fabrication to evaluate the performance of fabrication process. It did not fit the expected frequency because the wire was manually wound to make a small size coil. However, the wire wound coil is expected to be more efficient than the coil made through the PCB process, and if the sophistication is supplemented, it can be used as a highly efficient coil for wireless power transmission.

Poor survival of grafted cells is the major impediment of successful cell-based therapies for bone regeneration. Implanted cells undergo rapid death in an ischemic environment largely because of hypoxia and metabolic stress from glucose deficiency. Understanding the intracellular metabolic processes and finding genes that can improve cell survival in these inhospitable conditions are necessary to enhance the success of cell therapies. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate changes of metabolic profile in glucose-deprived human bone marrow stromal/stem cells (hBMSCs) through metabolomics analysis and discover genes that could promote cell survival and osteogenic differentiation in a glucose-deprived microenvironment. Metabolomics analysis was performed to determine metabolic changes in a glucose stress metabolic model. In the absence of glucose, expression levels of all metabolites involved in glycolysis were significantly decreased than those in a glucose-supplemented state. In glucose-deprived osteogenic differentiation, reliance on tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA)-predicted oxidative phosphorylation instead of glycolysis as the main mechanism for energy production in osteogenic induction. By comparing differentially expressed genes between glucose-deprived and glucose-supplemented hBMSCs, NR2F1 (Nuclear Receptor Subfamily 2 Group F Member 1) gene was discovered to be associated with enhanced survival and osteogenic differentiation in cells under metabolic stress. Small, interfering RNA (siRNA) for NR2F1 reduced cell viability and osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs under glucose-supplemented conditions whereas NR2F1 overexpression enhanced osteogenic differentiation and cell survival of hBMSCs in glucose-deprived osteogenic conditions via the protein kinase B (AKT)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway. NR2F1-transfected hBMSCs significantly enhanced new bone formation in a critical size long-bone defect of rats compared with control vector-transfected hBMSCs. In conclusion, the results of this study provide an understanding of the metabolic profile of implanted cells in an ischemic microenvironment and demonstrate that NR2F1 treatment may overcome this deprivation by enhancing AKT and ERK regulation. These findings can be utilized in regenerative medicine for bone regeneration. © 2022 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

Platycodon grandiflorus roots have been used as a foodstuff and traditional medicine for thousands of years in East Asia. In order to increase the root development of P. grandiflorus, cultivators removed the inflorescences, suggesting the possible negative effect of flowering on root development. This indicates that the genetic improvement of P. grandiflorus by late flowering is a potential approach to increase productivity. However, nothing is known about key genes integrating multiple flowering pathways in P. grandiflorus. In order to fill this gap, we identified potential homologs of the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene in P. grandiflorus. The alignment with other FT members and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the P. grandiflorus FT (PlgFT) protein contains highly conserved functional domains and belongs to the FT-like clade. The expression analysis revealed spatial variations in the transcription of PlgFT in different organs. In addition, the expression level of PlgFT was increased by high temperature but not by photoperiodic light input signals, presumably due to lacking the CONSTANS binding motif in its promoter region. Furthermore, PlgFT induced early flowering upon its overexpression in P. grandiflorus, suggesting the functional role of PlgFT in flowering. Taken together, we functionally characterized PlgFT as a master regulator of P. grandiflorus flowering under inductive high temperature, which will serve as an important target gene for improving the root productivity.

INTRODUCTION: The Republic of Korea (ROK) military has a high incidence of respiratory diseases at training centres. Vitamin C has been reported to reduce the incidence of colds. For the purpose of preventing soldiers' respiratory diseases, this study aimed to investigate whether vitamin C intake can prevent common colds in the ROK Army soldiers. METHODS: This was a randomised, placebo-controlled, and double-blind trial of soldiers who enlisted in the Korea Army Training Centre for 30 days from 12 February to 13 March 2018. The study participants were divided into groups (vitamin C vs placebo). The military medical records were searched to determine whether the participants had a common cold. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the association between vitamin C intake and diagnosis of common colds. In addition, subgroup analysis on the relationship between vitamin C intake and common cold according to smoking status, training camp and physical rank was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 1444 participants were included in our study. Of these participants, 695 received vitamin C (6000 mg/day, vitamin C group), while 749 participants received placebo (0 mg/day, placebo group). The vitamin C group had a 0.80-fold lower risk of getting a common cold than did the placebo group. Subgroup analyses showed that this effect was stronger among subjects in camp A, among never smokers and among those in physical rank 3. CONCLUSION: Vitamin C intake provides evidence to suggest that reducing the common colds in Korean Army soldiers. Our results may serve as a basis for introducing military healthcare policies that can provide vitamin C supplementation for military personnel in basic military training.

Melanin is a brown or black pigment that protects skin from ultraviolet radiation and reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, overproduction of melanin is associated with lentigines, melasma, freckles and skin cancer. Licorice has shown antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-platelet, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities and is used as a natural treatment for skin whitening. We aimed to confirm the potential of Wongam, a new cultivar of licorice developed by the Rural Development Administration (RDA), as a whitening agent in cosmetics. In addition, we verified the effect of heat treatment on the bioactivity of licorice by comparing antioxidant and anti-melanogenic activities of licorice extract before and after heating (130 °C). The heat-treated licorice extract (WH-130) showed higher radical-scavenging activities in the ABTS+ (2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assays. In addition, WH-130 inhibited melanogenesis more effectively due to downregulation of tyrosinase in B16F10 melanoma cells than non-heated licorice extract. Moreover, heat treatment increased total phenolic content. In particular, isoliquiritigenin, an antioxidant and anti-melanogenic compound of licorice, was produced by heat treatment. In conclusion, WH-130, with increased levels of bioactive phenolics such as isoliquiritigenin, has potential for development into a novel skin whitening material with applications in cosmetics.

Soybean oil (SBO) and fully hydrogenated soybean oil (FHSBO) have been used for margarine production. However, SBO-based margarine requires a considerable amount of trans fatty acid-containing FHSBO due to its low melting point. We aimed to reduce the FHSBO content in margarine by employing duck fat, which has a higher melting point than SBO. Margarines were prepared using different ratios of duck fat and reduced levels of SBO and FHSBO. Physicochemical, sensory, and oxidative properties of the margarines were evaluated. The quality characteristics of margarine improved when duck fat replaced SBO and FHSBO. Furthermore, the lipid oxidation parameters were lower in duck fat-added margarines than the control during storage at 60 °C for 28 days. The margarine containing 80% duck fat showed the best sensory properties. Collectively, duck fat can replace SBO in margarine while reducing the use of FHSBO and maintaining desirable physicochemical properties, oxidative stability, and sensory properties.

The effects of commercial vegetable oils and duck skin on quality characteristics of a reduced-fat duck meat emulsion were examined. The cooking loss, emulsion stability, and hardness were lower for emulsions preemulsified with vegetable oils and duck skin (P < 0.05) than for the control. Storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G″) of reduced-fat duck meat emulsions treated with corn, grape seed, soy, and olive oils were similar to the values of control; the highest G' and G″ values were reported for the reduced-fat duck meat emulsion treated with coconut oil. Myofibril protein solubility was the highest for the reduced-fat duck meat emulsion treated with coconut oil and duck skin (P < 0.05). Replacing of pork back fat with different vegetable oils for emulsification may impart superior quality to reduced-fat duck meat emulsion. We recommend preemulsion with vegetable oils and duck skin to enhance the quality characteristics of reduced-fat duck meat emulsion.

Plant extracts have gained more attention as natural therapeutic agents against inflammation characterized by an overproduction of several inflammatory mediators such as reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Although Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai is generally known for its ornamental value, recent pharmacological research has demonstrated its potential therapeutic properties. Thus, to further evaluate the applicability of A. distichum in the food, cosmetic, and medical industries, we identified the phytochemicals in three organ extracts (fruits: AF, branches: AB, leaves: AL) of A. distichum and determined their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Using UPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS, a total of 19 compounds, including dendromoniliside D, forsythoside B, isoacteoside, isomucronulatol 7-O-Glucoside, plantamajoside, and wighteone were identified in the A. distichum organ extracts. AB exhibited a strong reducing power, an oxygen radical antioxidant capacity, and radical scavenging values compared with other samples, whereas AL exhibited the best anti-inflammatory properties. Gene expression, western blot, and molecular docking analyses suggested that the anti-inflammatory effect of AL was mediated by its ability to suppress lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of reactive oxygen species and/or inhibit LPS-stimulated activation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases (ERK1/2) in RAW264.7 cells. Collectively, these results indicate that AL is a potential source of phytochemicals that could be used to treat inflammation-associated diseases.

We used ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode-array detector and electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-PDA/ESI-Q-TOF/MS) to rapidly and accurately quantify 17 phenolic compounds. Then, we applied this method to the seed and leaf extracts of two Amaranthus species to identify and quantify phenolic compounds other than the 17 compounds mentioned above. Compounds were eluted within 30 min on a C18 column using a mobile phase (water and acetonitrile) containing 0.1% formic acid, and the specific wavelength and ion information of the compounds obtained by PDA and ESI-Q-TOF/MS were confirmed. The proposed method showed good linearity (r2 > 0.990). Limits of detection and quantification were less than 0.1 and 0.1 µg/mL, respectively. Intra- and interday precision were less than 2.4% and 1.8%, respectively. Analysis of amaranth seed and leaf extracts using the established method showed that the seeds contained high amounts of 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and kaempferol, and leaves contained diverse phenolic compounds. In addition, six tentatively new phenolic compounds were identified. Moreover, seeds potentially contained 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, a beneficial bioactive compound. Thus, our method was an efficient approach for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds, and could be used to investigate phenolic compounds in plants.

The development of genetically engineered cell cultures has been suggested as a potential approach for the production of target compounds from medicinal plants. In this study, we generated PAP1 (production of anthocyanin pigment 1)-overexpressing ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) hairy roots to improve the production of anthocyanins, as well as the bioactivity (e.g., antioxidant and whitening activities) of ginseng. Based on differentially expressed gene analysis, we found that ectopic expression of PAP1 induced the expression of genes involved in the 'phenylpropanoid biosynthesis' (24 genes), and 'flavonoid biosynthesis' (17 genes) pathways, resulting in 191- to 341-fold increases in anthocyanin production compared to transgenic control (TC) hairy roots. Additionally, PAP1-overexpressing ginseng hairy roots exhibited an approximately seven-fold higher DPPH-free radical scavenging activity and 10-fold higher ORAC value compared to the TC. In α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-stimulated B16F10 cells, PAP1-overexpressing ginseng hairy roots strongly inhibited the accumulation of melanin by 50 to 59% compared to mock-control. Furthermore, results obtained by quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, and tyrosinase inhibition assay suggested that the anti-melanogenic activity of PAP1-overexpressing ginseng hairy roots is mediated by tyrosinase activity inhibition. Taken together, our results suggested that the ectopic expression of PAP1 is an effective strategy for the enhancement of anthocyanin production, which improves the biological activities of ginseng root cultures.

Sorbus commixta Hedl. (Rosaceae family) has a long history as a medicinal plant in East Asian countries. In this study, we evaluated the effect of S. commixta fruit extracts prepared with different ethanol concentrations on anti-melanoma activity, and the extraction yield of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Using the partitioned fractions from the EtOH extract, we found that the butanol fraction (BF) possessed strong cytotoxic activity against SK-MEL-2 cells (human melanoma cells) but not against HDFa cells (human dermal fibroblast adult cells). Additionally, BF-induced cell death was mediated by the inhibition of the mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular regulated kinase (MEK/ERK) signaling pathway, coupled with the upregulation of caspase-3 activity in SK-MEL-2 cells. Furthermore, HPLC analysis of polyphenolic compounds suggested that S. commixta fruits contained several active compounds including chlorogenic acid, rutin, protocatechuic acid, and hydroxybenzoic acid, all of which are known to possess anti-cancer activities. Although this study has been carried out by cell-based approach, these results suggest that S. commixta fruits contain promising anti-melanoma compounds.

The effects of using grape seed oil in combination with gelatine and alginate on the physicochemical characteristics of meat emulsions were examined. Four different meat emulsions were manufactured and half the conventional fat was substituted with pre-emulsified grape seed oil with gelatine and/or alginate: T1, only grape seed oil; T2, grape seed oil and gelatine; T3, grape seed oil and alginate, T4, grape seed oil, gelatine, and alginate. Meat emulsion containing only pork back fat was compared as control. Results revealed that T4 was moister, lighter, more viscous, and stable in emulsion than control and value of ash contents of T4 was higher than those of control. Moreover, the value of fat content, pH, firmness, chewiness, toughness, and lipid oxidation of the T4 meat emulsion were lower than those of control. The meat emulsions with emulsified grape seed oil were more principally elastic than viscous and appearent viscosity was the highest in T4. In conclusion, instead of using each ingredient alone, pre-emulsified grape seed oil, gelatine, and alginate can replace partial pork fat with in meat emulsion formulations results in optimized meat processing properties.

BACKGROUND: CDK4/6 inhibitors in combination with endocrine therapy (AE/AI/SERDs) are approved for the treatment of ER+ advanced breast cancer (BCa). However, not all patients benefit from CDK4/6 inhibitors therapy. We previously reported a novel therapeutic agent, ERX-11, that binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) and modulates ER-coregulator interactions. Here, we tested if the combination of ERX-11 with agents approved for ER+ BCa would be more potent. METHODS: We tested the effect of combination therapy using BCa cell line models, including those that have acquired resistance to tamoxifen, letrozole, or CDK4/6 inhibitors or have been engineered to express mutant forms of the ER. In vitro activity was tested using Cell Titer-Glo, MTT, and apoptosis assays. Mechanistic studies were conducted using western blot, reporter gene assays, RT-qPCR, and mass spectrometry approaches. Xenograft, patient-derived explants (PDEs), and xenograft-derived explants (XDE) were used for preclinical evaluation and toxicity. RESULTS: ERX-11 inhibited the proliferation of therapy-resistant BCa cells in a dose-dependent manner, including ribociclib resistance. The combination of ERX-11 and CDK4/6 inhibitor was synergistic in decreasing the proliferation of both endocrine therapy-sensitive and endocrine therapy-resistant BCa cells, in vitro, in xenograft models in vivo, xenograft-derived explants ex vivo, and in primary patient-derived explants ex vivo. Importantly, the combination caused xenograft tumor regression in vivo. Unbiased global mass spectrometry studies demonstrated profound decreases in proliferation markers with combination therapy and indicated global proteomic changes in E2F1, ER, and ER coregulators. Mechanistically, the combination of ERX-11 and CDK4/6 inhibitor decreased the interaction between ER and its coregulators, as evidenced by immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry studies. Biochemical studies confirmed that the combination therapy significantly altered the expression of proteins involved in E2F1 and ER signaling, and this is primarily driven by a transcriptional shift, as noted in gene expression studies. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that ERX-11 inhibited the proliferation of BCa cells resistant to both endocrine therapy and CDK4/6 inhibitors in a dose-dependent manner and that the combination of ERX-11 with a CDK4/6 inhibitor may represent a viable therapeutic approach.

The ventrolateral subdivision of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMHvl) contains ∼4,000 neurons that project to multiple targets and control innate social behaviors including aggression and mounting. However, the number of cell types in VMHvl and their relationship to connectivity and behavioral function are unknown. We performed single-cell RNA sequencing using two independent platforms-SMART-seq (∼4,500 neurons) and 10x (∼78,000 neurons)-and investigated correspondence between transcriptomic identity and axonal projections or behavioral activation, respectively. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) identified 17 transcriptomic types (T-types), including several sexually dimorphic clusters, the majority of which were validated by seqFISH. Immediate early gene analysis identified T-types exhibiting preferential responses to intruder males versus females but only rare examples of behavior-specific activation. Unexpectedly, many VMHvl T-types comprise a mixed population of neurons with different projection target preferences. Overall our analysis revealed that, surprisingly, few VMHvl T-types exhibit a clear correspondence with behavior-specific activation and connectivity.

Polyaniline-grafted nanodiamond (PAN-ND) nanoparticles were fabricated by polymerizing aniline at the surface of amine-modified NDs for efficient photothermal therapy (PTT). A series of PAN from different aniline concentrations were also prepared to compare the properties and the efficiency of PTT. The polymerization rate of aniline was faster in the presence of NDs than that of aniline alone. Compared to PAN nanoparticles, PAN-ND has a spherical shape, smaller size, and ultimately higher cellular uptake efficiency. The temperature of aqueous PAN-ND dispersion increased to 44.4 °C after laser irradiation for 5 min. In addition, the UV absorbance intensity of PAN-ND increased at the lower pH at the near infrared (NIR) region, resulting in an enhanced photothermal effect at a tumor site. Notably, the viability of HeLa cells treated with PAN-ND decreased by less than 20%, suggesting the high efficiency of PTT. The PAN-ND can be a potential candidate for efficient photothermal tumor therapy.
