RESUMEN

The current study aimed to assess the effects of different levels of essential oil/palygorskite composite (EO-PGS) supplementation on performance, egg quality, oxidative status, immunity and intestinal morphology of laying hens. A total of 480 laying hens aged 65 wk were randomly assigned into 4 groups (6 replicates of 20 hens each). Hens were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (control diet), 0.5, 0.75 or 1.0 g/kg EO-PGS for 56 d. Data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA. Results showed that birds fed with diet supplemented with EO-PGS had increased the egg production (P < 0.05) more than birds fed with control diet. The yolk index and shell thickness were increased in 0.75 and 1.0 g/kg EO-PGS groups at d56 (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in plasma biochemical parameters among all groups. Compared with the control group, supplementation of EO-PGS increased the immunoglobulin-G and interleukin-2 levels in plasma (P < 0.05). The total antioxidant capacity in plasma and liver, the plasma catalase concentration, the activity of total superoxide dismutase in the liver and the activity of glutathione peroxidase in the spleen were increased in the EO-PGS groups (P < 0.05). The concentration of malondialdehyde in the liver was decreased with the increasing level of EO-PGS (P < 0.05). The crypt depth of ileum and duodenum of birds fed with EO-PGS supplemented diet had a tendency to decrease (0.05

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of tanshinone IIA pretreatment on acute renal injury in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced septic mice and explore the possible mechanism. METHODS: Thirty C57BL/6 mice were randomized for treatment with saline (control), 10 mg/kg LPS for 24 h, or 10 mg/kg tanshinone IIA 15 min before LPS treatment. After the treatments, serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels of the mice were detected, renal pathologies were observed with PAS staining, and renal expressions of RIP3, cleaved caspase-3 and p18-FUNDC1 were detected with Western blotting. In the cell experiment, cultured normal human renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) were treated with LPS (10 mg/mL), LPS+ siNC, LPS+ siRIP3, or LPS+tanshinone IIA (10 mg/L), and the changes in cell apoptosis were examined with TUNEL staining; Western blotting was performed to detect the expression levels of RIP3, cleaved caspase-3 and p18-FUNDC1, and qRT-PCR was used to detect the expression of RIP3 mRNA. RESULTS: LPS challenge for 24 h significantly increased serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in the mice, caused obviously damages in the proximal renal tubules, and increased renal expressions of RIP3, cleaved caspase-3 and p18-FUNDC1 proteins. Tanshinone IIA pretreatment significantly improved LPS-induced renal injury in the mice, alleviated apoptosis of the renal cells, and inhibited the expressions of RIP3, cleaved caspase-3 and p18-FUNDC1 proteins. In HK-2 cells, LPS stimulation significantly increased the protein expressions of RIP3, cleaved caspase-3 and p18-FUNDC1 and induced obvious cell apoptosis. Pretreatment with tanshinone IIA strongly inhibited the expression of RIP3 and p18-FUNDC1 and reduced LPS-induced apoptosis of HK-2 cells. CONCLUSION: Tanshinone IIA can reduce LPS-induced apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells by inhibiting RIP3/FUNDC1 signal pathway.

Objective: To establish the animal model of subchronic manganism, and to explore the effect of manganese on neurofunction of rats and the protective effect of curcumin on neurotoxicity of manganism rats. Methods: From July to December 2019, 80 SPF male SD rats were divided into 8 groups according to body weight by random number table method, which were blank control group, low, middle and high dose manganese exposure group, low, middle and high dose curcumin antagonistic group and curcumin group, with 10 rats in each group. The low, middle and high dose manganese groups were given intraperitoneal injection of 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg MnCl(2)·4H(2)O respectively. The low, middle and high dose curcumin antagonistic groups were given 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg curcumin orally along with 15 mg/kg MnCl(2)·4H(2)O intraperitoneal injection. Curcumin group was given 400 mg/kg curcumin orally. The rats were exposed to 5 days a week, once a day for 16 weeks. After exposure, neurobehavioral tests (balance beam test, Morris water maze, passive avoidance test) were carried out in each group. Hippocampus tissues were taken for pathological examination and oxidative stress indexes were detected. Results: The balance beam test results showed that, compared with the blank control group, the scores of balance beam of the rats in the middle and high dose manganese exposure groups increased (P<0.05) . Compared with the high dose manganese exposure group, the balance beam scores of the low, middle and high dose curcumin antagonistic groups were decreased (P<0.05) .The results of Morris water maze showed that, compared with the blank control group, the escape latency of middle and high dose manganese exposure groups was prolonged from the third day (P<0.05) , and the average number of crossing the platform area of each manganese exposure group was decreased (P<0.05) .Compared with the high dose manganese exposure group, the escape latency of the middle and high dose curcumin antagonistic groups was shortened (P<0.05) , and the average number of crossing the original platform was increased (P<0.05) . The results of passive avoidance test show that, compared with the blank control group, the number of errors were increased in middle and high dose manganese exposure groups (P<0.05) . Compared with the high dose manganese exposure group, the number of errors in the passive avoidance test in the middle and high dose curcumin antagonistic groups were decreased (P<0.05) . Pathological examination showed that the rats treated with manganses had different degrees of degeneration and necrosis of nerve cells, and the structure of nerve cells was blurred and the number of nerve cells decreased. The above phenomena were improved after curcumin antagonism. The results of oxidative stress index showed that, compared with blank control group, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in the hippocampus of rats exposed to middle and high dose of manganese (P<0.05) . Compared with the high dose manganese exposure group, the SOD activity increased and the MDA content decreased in the middle and high dose antagonist group (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Subchronic manganese exposure can reduce the balance function, learning and memory ability of rats, and damage the hippocampal nerve cells in oxidative stress state. Curcumin can improve the balance function and learning and memory ability of rats with manganese poisoning, improve the hippocampal nerve damage caused by manganese exposure, and has a certain protective effect on manganese induced neurotoxicity.

RESUMEN

The quarantine and treatment plays an important role in prevention and control of respiratory infectious diseases. It has been nearly 200 years since sanatorium model was adopted to isolate and treat patients with tuberculosis(TB). The era of the Republic of China was an important period for the model to sprout and expand. TB sanatorium was established in the early 20th century in China, and flourished in the 1930s. Establishment and changes of TB sanatoriums in Peking, Shanghai and Hangzhou during the era of the Republic of China, has great significance for sorting out the clues of China's anti-TB history, exploring historical trends of TB in China, and most important of all, summing up valuable lessons.

Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is currently grown in many tropical and subtropical areas countries and is a major traded commodity for the developing world. Coffee leaf blight, caused by Phomopsis heveicola, is one of the most important fungal diseases dangerous to coffee crops in China. This study aimed to develop a PCR-based diagnostic method for detecting P. heveicola in planta. Specific primers (CPHF/CPHR) were designed based on sequence data of region of internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS4) of P. heveicola. The efficiency and specificity of CPHF/CPHR were established by PCR analysis of DNA from P. heveicola strains isolated from China and fungal isolates of other genera. A single amplification product of 318 bp was detected from DNA P. heveicola isolates. No amplification product was observed with any of the other fungal isolates tested. The specific primers designed and employed in PCR detected P. heveicola up to 3 pg from DNA isolated. This is the first report on the development of a species-specific PCR assay for identification and detection of P. heveicola. Thus, the PCR-based assay developed was very specific, rapid and sensitive tool for the detection of pathogen P. heveicola.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects and combinational effects of Bacillus subtilis (BS) and montmorillonite (MMT) on laying performance, gut mucosal oxidation status, and intestinal immunological and physical barrier functions of laying hens. Three hundred sixty laying hens (29-week-old) were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (n = 6) for 10 wk as follows: (1) basal diet; (2) the basal diet plus 5 × 108 cfu BS/kg; (3) the basal diet plus 0.5 g MMT/kg; and (4) the basal diet plus 5 × 108 cfu BS/kg and 0.5 g MMT/kg. Dietary supplementation with BS increased egg production and egg mass, the activities of catalase (CAT) and total superoxide dismutase in the intestinal mucosa, and villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio of the jejunum (P < 0.05) but downregulated the mRNA expression levels of toll-like receptor 4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) in the duodenum and jejunum, interleukin 1 beta in the duodenum, and nuclear factor kappa B P65 (NF-κB P65) and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the jejunum (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with MMT increased egg production and egg mass, the concentration of secretory immunoglobulin A in the duodenum, and the occludin mRNA expression level in the jejunum (P < 0.05) but reduced feed conversion ratio, malondialdehyde concentration in the duodenum and jejunum, and the mRNA expression level of MyD88 in the jejunum (P < 0.05). In addition, there was an interaction effect between BS and MMT supplementation on the CAT activity and the MyD88 mRNA expression level in the duodenum and the mRNA expression level of occludin in the jejunum (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary BS and MMT and their combination may improve the intestinal health status of laying hens, which may contribute to the increase in hens' laying performance.

1. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Gingko biloba extract EGB761 on heat-stressed chicken heart in vivo and its underlying relevance to Hsp70.2. A total of 50 one-day-old female chicks were randomly divided into five groups: control (Con), heat-stress (HS), 0.1% EGB761 plus heat-stress (0.1%EGB+HS), 0.3%EGB761 plus heat-stress (0.3%EGB+HS) and 0.6%EGB761 plus heat-stress (0.6%EGB+HS) groups. After administration of EGB761 for 45 days, the chickens in each group were exposed to a single heat-stress event at 38 ± 1°C for 3 h.3. EGB761 attenuated the abnormal symptoms and pathological scores of myocardium of heat-stressed chickens. Despite a reduction in the transcription and translation of the Hsp70 gene in heat-stressed myocardium, EGB761 induced the expression of Hsp70 in endothelial cells of the microarteries and venules into the blood, and reduced heat-stress damage in vascular endothelial cells.4. Supplementation with EGB761 before heat-stress exposure protected chicken myocardium from damage by increasing serum Hsp70 protein from myocardial cells and cardiac microvascular endothelial cells and protected the microvascular system from adverse injury.

Hydrogen is an important intermediate that is produced during carbohydrate fermentation to volatile fatty acid and utilized by methanogens to produce methane in the rumen. Ruminal volatile fatty acid and dissolved methane concentrations are more than 500 times greater than dissolved hydrogen concentration. Therefore, we hypothesized that dissolved hydrogen might have a higher sensitivity in response to dietary changes compared with volatile fatty acid and dissolved methane. Using goats, we investigated the effects of increasing dietary starch content (maize replaced with wheat bran) and supplementing with rhubarb rhizomes and roots on the relationships among dissolved hydrogen, dissolved methane and other fermentation end products. The study was conducted in a replicated 4×4 Latin square with a 2×2 factorial arrangement of four treatments: two starch levels (220 v. 320 g/kg dry matter (DM)), without and with rhubarb supplement (0% v. 2.8% of total mixed ration). Increased dietary starch and rhubarb supplementation did not alter volatile fatty acid concentrations or methane emissions in terms of g/day, g/g DM intake and g/g organic matter digested. However, goats fed the high-starch diet had greater dissolved hydrogen (P=0.005) and relative abundance of Selenomonas ruminantium (P<0.01), and lower (P=0.02) copy number of protozoa than those fed the low-starch diet. Rhubarb increased ruminal dissolved H2 (P=0.03) and total volatile fatty acid concentration (P<0.001), but decreased copies of bacteria (P=0.002). In conclusion, dissolved hydrogen appears to be more sensitive to dietary changes with starch content and rhubarb supplementation, when compared with volatile fatty acid concentrations and methane production.

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of animals is capable of sensing various kinds of nutrients via G-protein coupled receptor-mediated signaling transduction pathways, and the process is known as 'gut nutrient chemosensing'. GPR40, GPR41, GPR43 and GPR119 are chemoreceptors for free fatty acids (FFAs) and lipid derivatives, but they are not well studied in small ruminants. The objective of this study is to determine the expression of GPR40, GPR41, GPR43 and GPR119 along the GIT of kid goats under supplemental feeding (S) v. grazing (G) during early development. In total, 44 kid goats (initial weight 1.35±0.12 kg) were slaughtered for sampling (rumen, abomasum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon and rectum) between days 0 and 70. The expression of GPR41 and GPR43 were measured at both mRNA and protein levels, whereas GPR40 and GPR119 were assayed at protein level only. The effects of age and feeding system on their expression were variable depending upon GIT segments, chemoreceptors and expression level (mRNA or protein), and sometimes feeding system × age interactions (P0.05) on GPR43 expression; and there were no feeding system×age interactions (P>0.05) on GPR41 and GPR43 protein expression. The expression of GPR41 and GPR43 in rumen and abomasum linearly (P<0.01) increased with increasing age (from days 0 to 70). Meanwhile, age was the main factor affecting GPR40 expression throughout the GIT. These outcomes indicate that age and feeding system are the two factors affecting chemoreceptors for FFAs and lipid derivatives expression in the GIT of kids goats, and S enhanced the expression of chemoreceptors for FFAs, whereas G gave rise to greater expression of chemoreceptors for lipid derivatives. Our results suggest that enhanced expression of chemoreceptors for FFAs might be one of the benefits of early supplemental feeding offered to young ruminants during early development.

The importance of non-acoustical factors including the type of visual environment on human noise perception becomes increasingly recognized. In order to reveal the relationships between long-term noise annoyance and different types of neighborhood views, 2033 questionnaire responses were collected for studying the effect of perceptions of different combinations of views of sea, urban river, greenery, and/or noise barrier on the annoyance responses from residents living in high-rise apartments in Hong Kong. The collected responses were employed to formulate a multivariate model to predict the probability of invoking a high annoyance response from residents. Results showed that views of sea, urban river, or greenery could lower the probability, while views of noise barrier could increase the probability. Views of greenery had a stronger noise moderation capability than views of sea or urban river. The presence of an interaction effect between views of water and views of noise barrier exerted a negative influence on the noise annoyance moderation capability. The probability due to exposure to an environment containing views of noise barriers and urban rivers would be even higher than that due to exposure to an environment containing views of noise barriers alone.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia that leads to increasing death and mental disability among humans. Current therapy of AD mainly relies on the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) or antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), which only relieve the symptoms of the disease but not halt its progression. Nevertheless, Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are highly prized as many bioactive components isolated from TCM are beneficial for treating AD. In this review, we summarize the latest information on TCM and the bioactive components according to their mechanistic role in alleviating AD. They act as modulators of α- and ß-secretases, and inhibitors of betaamyloid (Aß) aggregation. Some of them suppress Aß-induced neuronal cytotoxicity and inflammation. Hence, this work has demonstrated the feasibility of applying TCM in AD therapy and the possibility of screening of constituents in TCM in the near future.

SETTING: A county in Jiangsu Province, China. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the costs of the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) from the patient's perspective and to identify determinants of the patient's financial burden. DESIGN: In a cross-sectional survey, we interviewed 316 patients diagnosed from January 2010 to May 2011 who had already completed their anti-tuberculosis treatment. The financial burden on TB patients included out-of-pocket costs and productivity losses. RESULTS: The average per capita total out-of-pocket cost was 3024.0 Chinese yuan (CNY), with a median cost of 1086 CNY (interquartile range [IQR] 480-2456). Mean out-of-pocket medical and non-medical costs were respectively 2565.7 CNY and 458.3 CNY. Productivity lost by patients and family members was 2615.2 CNY (median 500, IQR 250-2025). Factors associated with out-of-pocket costs and productivity losses included hospitalisation, adverse drug reactions, cost of drugs to 'protect' the liver, cost of second-line anti-tuberculosis drugs and diagnostic delay. CONCLUSION: Although the government of China has implemented a 'free TB service policy', the economic burden on patients is still heavy. More patient-centred interventions are essential to reduce the financial burden on patients.

Tea catechins (TC) are polyphenols that have potent antioxidant activity. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of TC on antioxidant status of hepatocytes challenged with H2 O2 . Primary hepatocytes of goat were exposed to 1 mm H2 O2 without or with 5, 50 and 500 µg/ml TC. The cells were harvested at 48 h post-treatment to determine effects of TC on proliferation, apoptotic features and membrane integrity of cells, and expression of genes and activities of antioxidant enzymes. H2 O2 exposure caused damage to cells (p < 0.001). A lower concentration of TC (5 µg/ml) displayed a protective effect by inhibiting exorbitant cell proliferation and DNA degradation. Both H2 O2 exposure and TC pre-incubation affected expression of antioxidant enzymes at mRNA and protein levels (p < 0.001). The activities of catalase (CAT) (p = 0.027), CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) (p < 0.001) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (p < 0.001) increased with TC pre-incubation followed by H2 O2 challenge. Changes of CuZn-SOD activity induced by H2 O2 and TC basically paralleled the changes in the corresponding mRNA and protein levels, but the correlation in CAT and GPx expression displayed slightly different patterns at different concentrations of TC. These findings infer that oxidative stress can induce deleterious cellular responses and this unfavourable condition may be alleviated by treatment with TC.

The present study was conducted to assess the effects of dietary supplementation of Zingiber officinale and Zingiber zerumbet and to heat-stressed broiler chickens on heat shock protein (HSP) 70 density, plasma corticosterone concentration (CORT), heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (HLR) and body temperature. Beginning from day 28, chicks were divided into five dietary groups: (i) basal diet (control), (ii) basal diet +1%Z. zerumbet powder (ZZ1%), (iii) basal diet +2%Z. zerumbet powder (ZZ2%), (iv) basal diet +1%Z. officinale powder (ZO1%) and (v) basal diet +2%Z. officinale powder (ZO2%). From day 35-42, heat stress was induced by exposing birds to 38±1°C and 80% RH for 2 h/day. Irrespective of diet, heat challenge elevated HSP70 expression, CORT and HLR on day 42. On day 42, following heat challenge, the ZZ1% birds showed lower body temperatures than those of control, ZO1% and ZO2%. Neither CORT nor HLR was significantly affected by diet. The ZO2% and ZZ2% diets enhanced HSP70 expression when compared to the control groups. We concluded that dietary supplementation of Z. officinale and Z. zerumbet powder may induce HSP70 reaction in broiler chickens exposed to heat stress.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of mental imagery (MI) in resident training for a complex surgical procedure. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Eight centres across Canada and the USA. POPULATION: Junior gynaecology residents who had performed fewer than five vaginal hysterectomies (VH). METHODS: After performing a pretest VH, junior gynaecology residents were randomised to standard MI versus textbook reading (No MI) and then performed a test VH. Surgeons blinded to group evaluated resident performance on the pretest and test VH via global rating scales (GRS), procedure-specific scales and intraoperative parameters. Residents evaluated their own performance. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Change in surgeon GRS score from pretest to test VH. The study was powered to detect a 20% difference in score change. RESULTS: Fifty residents completed the trial (24 MI, 26 No MI). There was no difference in GRS score change via blinded assessment from pretest to test evaluation between groups (mean change 13% [SD 17] versus 7% [SD 14], P = 0.192). There was no difference in procedure-specific score change. There was a significant difference in self-scored GRS score change between groups (mean change 19% [SD 12] versus 9% [SD 11], P = 0.005). Residents also felt more confident performing a VH (mean change 19% [SD 16] MI versus 11% [SD 10] No MI, P = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS: No difference was observed in the surgical performance of residents after MI. Improved resident self-confidence may be attributable to MI or the effect of unblinding on trial participants.

This study was conducted to examine dietary tea catechins (TC) supplementation on the fatty acid composition of muscle and ruminal bacteria in goats fed a maize stover-based diet. Forty goats, 8 months old (16.2 ± 1.2 kg), were randomly divided into four equal groups (10 animals in each group) and assigned to four experiment diets with TC supplementation at four levels (0, 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 mg TC/kg feed, namely TC0, TC2000, TC3000 and TC4000, respectively). After a 60-day feeding period, all the goats were slaughtered and sampled. The results showed that dietary TC inclusion increased the average daily gain (ADG), protein content in the semimembranosus muscle and dry matter in the longissimus dorsi muscle (LD). Dietary TC supplementation increased the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acid, the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids was higher in TC3000 and TC4000 than in TC0 and TC2000 for LD. The current results implied that dietary inclusion of a suitable TC dose could improve the growth performance and increase the proportions of unsaturated fatty acids in muscle, and the biohydrogenation of ruminal microorganisms might change the profiles of fatty acids in the muscle of growing goats.

RESUMEN

Although surgery has long been considered the main form of curative treatment for breast cancer, its use in older women may not always be indicated. Whilst surgery has been shown to provide superior local control for breast cancer, there is conflicting evidence on whether surgery offers a significant improvement on overall survival in these patients. The more indolent tumour biology commonly seen in older women with breast cancer, coupled with competing causes of death may alter the goals of treatment. The differing needs of older patients should be thoroughly assessed to consider their comorbidities, functional status and quality of life. A comprehensive geriatric assessment and quality of life assessment could identify pretreatment risk factors and guide clinical decision making, improving morbidity and prognosis. Alternatives to surgery include primary endocrine therapy and primary radiotherapy. Further research is required to identify different patient or tumour factors which can be used to individualize treatment for breast cancer in older women and to develop holistic assessment tools which take into account their individual quality of life, geriatric syndromes and functional needs. A dedicated multidisciplinary-led clinic may provide a suitable platform for the assessment, review and management of this distinctive set of patients.

The effects of dietary alkyl polyglycoside [APG, a nonionic surfactant (NIS), derived from a reaction of corn starch glucose and a natural fatty alcohol] inclusion on digestion of nutrients and ruminal fermentation in goats were examined in a 4 × 4 Latin square design using 4 ruminally and duodenally cannulated wethers (mean BW: 19.5 ± 0.8 kg). The animals were assigned to 4 dietary treatments of APG supplementation at 0, 3, 6, and 12 g/kg of DM diets and were designated as control, APG3, APG6, and APG12, respectively. The results showed that dietary APG inclusion tended to increase the intestinal digestibility of OM (linear, P = 0.09) and NDF (linear, P = 0.1), and quadratically increased (P ≤ 0.02) total tract digestibility of OM and NDF, the duodenal microbial N flow, and efficiency of microbial protein synthesis. The true ruminal digestibility and apparent total tract digestibility of N quadratically increased (P < 0.01) with increasing dietary APG. The ruminal pH values were not affected by dietary APG inclusion (P > 0.05), but the concentration of NH(3)-N (P < 0.01) and total VFA (linear and quadratic, P < 0.01) increased in the rumen fluid. Dietary APG inclusion also increased the activities of ruminal carboxymethyl cellulase (quadratic, P < 0.01) and xylanase (linear and quadratic, P < 0.01). It is concluded that APG is a potential feed additive that can be used in ruminant production; 6 g/kg in the total mixed rations for goats is recommended. It is necessary to validate the effectiveness of dietary APG inclusion in ruminant diets with more animals in further studies.

An in situ degradation technique was used to investigate the effects of variety, season and maturity stage on ruminal Phosphorus (P) release from whole maize stover and morphological fractions from five varieties of maize (conventional maize, CM; sweet maize, SM; waxy maize, WM; high oil maize, HOM; and fodder maize, FM). Maize plants were harvested in 2005, 17 and 31 days after tasselling and manually separated into leaf blade, leaf sheath, stem and husk. Results showed that the values of rapidly released P fractions (a), slowly released P fractions (b), rate constant of P release for fraction b (c) and effective disappearance (ED) of P were significantly influenced by variety, sowing season and maturity stage (p < 0.05). The ED of P in whole maize stover among the varieties decreased in the following order: FM (89.8%) > HOM (87.9%) > CM (87.0%) > SM (86.9%) > WM (83.9%). Advanced maturity stage increased (p < 0.001) the a and ED values of P in the leaf blade and leaf sheath, but decreased (p < 0.001) these parameters in the husk. The a fraction and ED of P were higher (p < 0.001) for maize sown in spring than those sown in summer. Significant (p < 0.05) interactions among variety, sowing season and maturity stage were noted in the a and ED values of P. Effective disappearance of morphological fraction varied significantly (p < 0.001) and followed the order: stem (90.3%) > leaf sheath (88.2%) > leaf blade (85.2%) > husk (84.9%). In conclusion, most of P in maize stover could be released in the rumen. The potential pollution resulting from P excretion in faeces may be alleviated, when maize stover is largely used as the main forage source of ruminants.

The effect of dietary methionine (Met) levels on endogenous N and amino acids (AA) flows at different part of the digestive tract of growing goats was determined using a (15)N isotope dilution technique. Three goats (25 ± 2.5 kg) were fitted with the ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulae and allocated to three dietary treatments in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. The dietary treatments consisted of a total mixed ration containing three levels of Met (0.15%, 0.25% and 0.35%) respectively. It was found that at 0.15% Met level, the lowest flow in endogenous N and total AA at the duodenum and ileum occurred. The endogenous N secretion contributed to 26% and 23% of the duodenal and ileal total N flows, respectively, and the proportions were not affected by the dietary Met levels. The duodenal and ileal flows of endogenous total AA were 11.1, 11.8, 11.3 g/d and 2.9, 3.9, 4.1 g/d respectively. The average real digestibility of N was 65%, 87% and 95% in the forestomach, intestine and whole digestive tract respectively.
