Biodegradable plastics (BPs) have gained increased attention as a promising solution to plastics pollution problem. However, BPs often exhibited limited in situ biodegradation in the soil environment, so they may also release microplastics (MPs) into soils just like conventional non-degradable plastics. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the impacts of biodegradable MPs (BMPs) on soil ecosystem. Here, we explored the effects of biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) MPs and conventional polyethylene (PE) MPs on soil-plant (pakchoi) system at three doses (0.02 %, 0.2 %, and 2 %, w/w). Results showed that PBAT MPs reduced plant growth in a dose-dependent pattern, while PE MPs exhibited no significant phytotoxicity. High-dose PBAT MPs negatively affected the rhizosphere soil nutrient availability, e.g., decreased available phosphorus and available potassium. Metagenomics analysis revealed that PBAT MPs caused more serious interference with the rhizosphere microbial community composition and function than PE MPs. In particular, compared with PE MPs, PBAT MPs induced greater changes in functional potential of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycles, which may lead to alterations in soil biogeochemical processes and ecological functions. Moreover, untargeted metabolomics showed that PBAT MPs and PE MPs differentially affect plant root exudates. Mantel tests, correlation analysis, and partial least squares path model analysis showed that changes in plant growth and root exudates were significantly correlated with soil properties and rhizosphere microbiome driven by the MPs-rhizosphere interactions. This work improves our knowledge of how biodegradable and conventional non-degradable MPs affect plant growth and the rhizosphere ecology, highlighting that BMPs might pose greater threat to soil ecosystems than non-degradable MPs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on improving liver injury by observing the changes of cysteine protease (Caspase) associated with hepatocyte apoptosis based on cisplatin (DDP) induced liver injury model mice. METHODS: Forty KM mice were randomly divided into control group, model group, acupuncture group and moxibustion group, with 10 mice in each group. The liver injury model was replicated by intraperitoneal injection of DDP. In the acupuncture group and the moxibustion group, acupuncture and moxibustion were performed at"Dazhui"(GV14), and bilateral "Ganshu"(BL18), "Shenshu"(BL23), and "Zusanli"(ST36), respectively, once per day for 5 d. General condition of mice in each group were observed;The activities of AST, ALT and GLDH in mice serum were detected by biochemical method. ELISA and Western blot assay were used to detect Caspase-3, Caspase-8 and Caspase-9 contents and protein expression in the liver tissues of each group of mice, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the general condition of the mice in the model group was poorer, and the Caspase-3, Caspase-8 and Caspase-9 contents and protein expressions in liver tissues and the activities of AST, ALT and GLDH in serum were increased (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the general condition of the mice in the acupuncture and moxibustion groups improved, and the Caspase-3, Caspase-8 and Caspase-9 contents and protein expressions in liver tissues and activities of AST, ALT and GLDH in serum were decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture and moxibustion can reduce liver injury due to DDP chemotherapy by modulating the expression of apoptotic factors Caspase-3, Caspase-8 and Caspase-9 in liver tissues of DDP model mice and improving liver function, which may be one of the mechanisms of the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion to ameliorates liver injury after DDP chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: To make up for the deficiency of the distribution characteristics of mercury (Hg) pollution in soil and rice in a specific area, the relationship between more than ten soil indices and Hg in soil-rice system was analysed, and the main factors affecting mercury accumulation in rice were screened out. So as to provide reliable theoretical and scientific basis for the regulation and safe utilization of Hg-contaminated soil. METHODS: The Hg-polluted area of Siqian Dam, with a paddy field area of 1.34 million square meters, was selected as the research unit. Soil and corresponding rice samples were collected and analysed. Then, common Kriging interpolation was used to explore the spatial distribution differences of mercury content between soil and rice, Pearson correlation analysis and stepwise linear regression were used to analyse the relationship between mercury content and 14 soil indices. RESULTS: In the study area, the total mercury(THg) content in soil and rice was as high as 30.60 mg/kg and 160.19 µg/kg, respectively, and the methyl mercury(MeHg) content was as high as 14.56 µg/kg and 40.32 µg/kg, respectively, indicating that mercury pollution in soil and rice was serious. The horizontal spatial distribution of soil THg and MeHg was different. Flood with its sediment and topography were the main reasons for the uneven distribution of Hg content in the region. The spatial distribution of Hg was different between rice and soil. There was no significant correlation between rice and soil THg, but there was a significant correlation between rice and soil MeHg content. Among the 14 soil indices, available potassium was a vital index affecting the accumulation of Hg in rice, followed by pH, Zn, Mn and Fe. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that in weakly acidic and fertile soil, the appropriate reduction of soil pH, OM and available Se and Cr contents could inhibit soil Hg methylation, the reduction of potassium fertilizer application could further reduce rice Hg accumulation. BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus lenvatinib in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) have not been evaluated. METHODS: In this open-label, single-center, randomized trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04127396), participants with previously untreated HCC and type I-IV PVTT were randomized 1:1 to receive TACE plus lenvatinib (arm L; orally once daily, 12 mg for body weight ≥60 kg or 8 mg for body weight <60 kg) or TACE plus sorafenib (arm S; 400 mg orally twice daily in 28-day cycles). The primary end point was time-to-progression (TTP; time from randomization to disease progression) and secondary end points included objective response rate and toxicity. Prognostic factors were evaluated using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: Between December 30, 2018 and May 31, 2020, 64 patients were randomized (arm L, n = 32; arm S, n = 32); most patients had type I/II PVTT (71.9%), and the median target tumor diameter was 9.8 cm (range, 3.8-21.8). After a median follow-up of 16.1 months, patients in arm L had a higher median TTP (4.7 vs 3.1 months; hazard ratio [HR], 0.55; 95% CI, 0.32-0.95; P = .029) and objective response rate (53.1% vs 25.0%, P = .039) versus arm S. Multivariable analysis showed that TACE plus lenvatinib was significantly associated with higher TTP versus TACE plus sorafenib (HR, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.28-0.90; P = .021). Comparable safety profiles were observed in arms L and S. CONCLUSIONS: TACE plus lenvatinib was safe, well tolerated, and had favorable efficacy versus TACE plus sorafenib in patients with advanced HCC with PVTT and large tumor burden. LAY SUMMARY: Hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus has a poor prognosis. In addition, most phase 3 trials of drugs for hepatocellular carcinoma exclude patients with major portal vein invasion, and treatment options for these patients are limited. Transarterial chemoembolization has shown promising efficacy in these patients, especially in combination with systemic treatment or radiotherapy. However, transarterial chemoembolization plus lenvatinib has not been investigated in this setting. This open-label, single-center, randomized trial showed that transarterial chemoembolization plus lenvatinib is safe, well tolerated, and has favorable efficacy versus transarterial chemoembolization plus sorafenib for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Pain often causes a series of abnormal changes in physiology and psychology, which can lead to disease and even death. Drug therapy is the most basic and commonly used method for pain relief and management. Interestingly, at present, hundreds of traditional Chinese medicines have been reported to be used for pain relief, most of which are monomer preparations, which have been developed into new painkillers. Corydalis yanhusuo is a representative of one of these medicines and is available for pain relief. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to determine the analgesic effect and the potential targets of the monomers derived from Corydalis yanhusuo, and to explore any possible associated cardiac risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, four monomers derived from Corydalis yanhusuo (tetrahydropalmatine, corydaline, protopine, dehydrocorydaline) were tested in vivo, using the formalin-induced pain model to determine their analgesic properties. Their potential targets were also determined using whole cell patch clamp recordings and myocardial enzyme assays. RESULTS: The results showed that all monomers showed analgesic activity and inhibited the peak currents, promoted the activation and inactivation phases of Nav1.7, which indicating that Nav1.7 might be involved in the analgesic mechanism of Corydalis yanhusuo. Protopine increased the level of creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and inhibited the peak currents, promoted the activation and inactivation phases of Nav1.5, indicating that Nav1.5 might be involved in the cardiac risk associated with protopine treatment. CONCLUSION: These data showed that tetrahydropalmatine produced the best analgesic effect and the lowest cardiac risk. Thus, voltage gated sodium channels (VGSCs) might be the main targets associated with Corydalis yanhusuo. This study, therefore, provides valuable information for future studies and use of traditional Chines medicines for the alleviation of pain.

Cold plasma seed treatment can promote plant growth and enhance the resistance of agricultural crops to adverse stress. However, the effects of plasma seed treatment on the growth and phytoextraction response of plants to cadmium (Cd) remain poorly documented. Here, we have investigated the feasibility of using plasma seed treatment to enhance the biomass and Cd accumulation of three Cd-tolerant species, namely Bidens pilosa L, Solanum nigrum L. and Trifolium repens L, under different plasma treatment conditions. Possible enhancement mechanisms are also proposed according to the levels of organic acids in the roots and the Cd fractions in rhizosphere soil following different plasma treatment conditions. The optimum plasma power was 100 W (B. pilosa) or 500 W (S. nigrum and T. repens). The optimum plasma exposure time for all three species was 60 s. Plasma seed treatment under the optimum treatment conditions enhanced plant dry biomass by ~17.3-45.0% and Cd accumulation by 8.8-54.4% across all three species compared to the controls. Furthermore, the phytoremediation efficiencies, bioaccumulation factors and transfer factors of the three species also increased significantly after seed plasma treatment. The promotion of plasma treatment on the biomass and Cd accumulation of three species might be due to increased exudation of organic acids from the roots into the rhizosphere soil, thus increasing the concentrations of acid-soluble Cd to form Cd-organic acid complexes that facilitated the uptake and translocation of Cd by the plants. Results of this study revealed that cold plasma seed treatment is an environmentally friendly, economical and efficient means to develop the application of phytoremediation for Cd-contaminated soils.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of iodine supplementation during pregnancy on thyroid function and also its effect on postpartum depression in an iodine-sufficient area. Healthy pregnant women were divided into three groups: group A (vitamin iodine-150) receiving vitamin containing 150 µg iodine, group B (vitamin iodine-0) receiving vitamin without iodine, and group C (no vitamin) receiving no vitamin. General information was collected by questionnaire and thyroid function was determined in the third trimester of pregnancy. Depression was assessed 1 month postpartum by the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS). The results showed that there was no significant difference in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level among the three groups (P > 0.05). FT4 concentration was significantly lower in group A (n = 234: 10.68 pmol/L) than in group B (n = 220: 11.47 pmol/L) and group C (n = 195: 11.64 pmol/L) (P < 0.05), However, it was still within the normal range. EPDS scores obtained from group B (3.50) and group C (3.00) were similar but markedly lower than group A (5.00) (P < 0.05). Despite the difference in the EPDS score, the prevalence of postpartum depression was not significantly different among the three groups. In conclusion, 150 µg/day iodine supplementation for pregnant women in areas with adequate iodine had little effect on thyroid function in the third trimester, and serum FT4 level could not be increased. Iodine supplementation during pregnancy also had no significant effect on postpartum depression.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals receiving influenza vaccines have a lower risk of pneumonia. A nationwide population-based case-control study was conducted using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. We enrolled 7565 patients each in pneumonia and non-pneumonia groups after diagnosis of patients with chronic pulmonary disease, and these patients were individually age and sex matched in a 1:1 ratio. Using conditional logistic regression analysis, adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were estimated in patients who received influenza vaccination and those who had not previously had pneumonia. Moreover, we also analyzed the interval between vaccination and the onset of pneumonia and the number of vaccinations received by patients. This was compared with patients who never received influenza vaccination. Patients who had received influenza vaccination and had been vaccinated for two consecutive years (aOR = 0.85, confidence interval (CI) = 0.79⁻0.93 and aOR = 0.75, CI = 0.67⁻0.85, respectively) showed lower rates of pneumonia occurrence by 15⁻25%. In conclusion, influenza vaccination significantly reduces the occurrence of pneumonia, especially in individuals who receive vaccination in consecutive years.

Legume-rhizobium symbioses have the potential to remediate soils contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds. Here, the model symbiosis between Medicago sativa and Sinorhizobium meliloti was used to explore the relationships between symbiotic nitrogen fixation and transformation of tetrachlorobiphenyl PCB 77 within this association. 45-day-old seedlings in vermiculite were pretreated with 5 mg L-1 PCB 77 for 5 days. In PCB-supplemented nodules, addition of the nitrogenase enhancer molybdate significantly stimulated dechlorination by 7.2-fold and reduced tissue accumulation of PCB 77 (roots by 96% and nodules by 93%). Conversely, dechlorination decreased in plants exposed to a nitrogenase inhibitor (nitrate) or harboring nitrogenase-deficient symbionts (nifA mutant) by 29% and 72%, respectively. A range of dechlorinated products (biphenyl, methylbiphenyls, hydroxylbiphenyls, and trichlorobiphenyl derivatives) were detected within nodules and roots under nitrogen-fixing conditions. Levels of nitrogenase-derived hydrogen and leghemoglobin expression correlated positively with nodular dechlorination rates, suggesting a more reducing environment promotes PCB dechlorination. Our findings demonstrate for the first time that symbiotic nitrogen fixation acts as a driving force for tetrachlorobiphenyl dechlorination. In turn, this opens new possibilities for using rhizobia to enhance phytoremediation of halogenated organic compounds.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (A. cantonensis) is the most common cause of parasitic eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. By using an animal model of BALB/c mice infected with A. cantonensis, previous studies indicated that the anthelmintic drug, albendazole, could kill A. cantonensis larvae and prevent further infection. However, the dead larvae will induce severe immune responses targeting at brain tissues. To alleviate the detrimental effects caused by the dead larvae, we administered curcumin, a traditional anti-inflammatory agent, as a complementary treatment in addition to albendazole therapy, to determine whether curcumin could be beneficial for treatment. The results showed that although curcumin treatment alone did not reduce worm number, combined treatment by albendazole and curcumin helped to reduce eosinophil count in the cerebrospinal fluid, better than using albendazole alone. This alleviating effect did not affect albendazole treatment alone, since histological analysis showed similar worm eradication with or without addition of curcumin. Nevertheless, curcumin treatment alone and combined albendazole-curcumin treatment did not inhibit MMP-9 expression in the brain tissue. In conclusion, curcumin, when used as a complementary treatment to albendazole, could help to alleviate eosinophilic meningitis through suppression of eosinophil count in the cerebrospinal fluid.

A field-scale experiment was carried out to compare the effectiveness of five plant species in the remediation of oily sludge. Alfalfa, tall fescue, and soybean substantially increased the removal rate of oil and grease (O&G) after 120 days of remediation. Of these, soybean treatment showed the highest removal rate of 34.2% compared with only 13.7% in the unplanted control plot. In addition to assisting with phytoremediation, soybean can also be used for energy production, for example in the production of biodiesel. Furthermore, microbial counts and community level physiological profiling using Biolog sole carbon source utilization tests were used to investigate the effect of plants on the microbial community of oily sludge. Plants selectively increased microbial counts in the rhizosphere and O&G concentrations of the sludge were negatively correlated with counts of TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) degraders. The acute biotoxicity of the sludge was also tested by the bacterial luminescence method and alfalfa treatments decreased the biological toxicity of the sludge compared with the unplanted control.

In situ bioremediation of oily sludge-contaminated soil by biostimulation of indigenous microbes through adding manure was conducted at the Shengli oilfield in northern China. After bioremediation for 360 days, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content was reduced by 58.2% in the treated plots compared with only 15.6% in the control plot. Moreover, bioremediation significantly improved the physicochemical properties of the soil in the treated plot. Soil microbial counts and community-level physiological profiling were also examined. Manure addition increased TPH degraders and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degraders in the contaminated soil by one to two orders of magnitude. The activity and biodiversity of soil microbial communities also increased markedly in the treated plot compared with that of the control. Finally, biotoxicity was used to evaluate the soils and a sharp increase in the EC50 of the soil after bioremediation was observed, indicating that bioremediation had reduced the toxicity of the soil.

Field-scale bioremediation of oily sludge in prepared beds was studied at Shengli oilfield in northern China. The influence of manure, coarse sand, sawdust, a specialized microbial preparation and greenhouse conditions on the efficiency of removal of oil and grease was evaluated. After bioremediation for 230d, oil and grease content fell by 32-42gkg(-1)dry sludge in treated plots, indicating removal of 27-46% compared with only 15% in the control plot. Addition of manure, coarse sand, sawdust and greenhouse conditions significantly (p<0.05) increased the amount removed. Moreover, the physico-chemical properties of the sludge in all treated plots improved significantly after bioremediation. Microbial biomass in sludge and community-level physiological profiling examined using BIOLOG microplates was also studied. Total petroleum hydrocarbon degraders and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degraders increased in all treated oily sludge. The activity of sludge microbial communities increased markedly in the treated plots compared with the control. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that differences in substrate utilization patterns were highly correlated (p<0.05) with sludge hydrolyzable N and oil and grease content. The biological toxicity of the oily sludge was lower following bioremediation in most of the treated plots as evaluated using Photobacterium phosphoreum T3.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of Yangxue Qingnao granule (YXQNG) in treating chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency (CCI) and its possible mechanism. METHODS: Eighty-three patients with CCI were randomly divided into YXQNG and nimodipine (ND) groups, the score of vertigo and the change in cerebral blood velocity before and after treatment were observed. And in the animal experiment, the authors adopted bilateral ligation of cervical carotid communis artery to establish CCI rat models in order to observe the effect of YXQNG and ND on incubation period of vertigo in rats and on memory performance. RESULTS: After clinical treatment, the vertigo score of YXQNG group was 2.34, and that of the ND group was 4.18, the comparison between the two groups showed that the difference was significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, the middle cerebral artery mean velocity (MCA Vm) of YXQNG group was 64.78 cm/s, vertebral artery mean velocity (VA Vm) was 29.78 cm/s, while that of ND group was 60.34 cm/s and 23.23 cm/s respectively, the comparison between these two groups showing statistical significance and the difference being obvious (P < 0.05). Experimental study showed that the rats in the model group after 12 weeks learning and memory were markedly lowered, the vertigo incubation period significantly lengthened, and compared with that of the model group, learning and memory of the YXQNG group was markedly improved and vertigo incubation period shortened, with the difference from that of the ND group insignificant, P > 0.05. CONCLUSION: YXQNG could effectively improve CCI patients' vertigo and other clinical symptoms and increase the cerebral blood flow, lessen the vertigo incubation of model group rats, elevate model group rats' memory performance.
