RESUMEN

We studied 137 males (mean age 68 +/- 8.6 years) with suspected prostatic cancer who had undergone transperineal biopsy of the prostate (12 tissue samples). The biopsy was made under local anesthesia either as paraprostatic block (n=76, group 1) or paraprostatic block in combination with block of the sexual nerve (n=61, group 2). Pain intensity was evaluated with visual analogue scales. Induction of anesthesia was more painful in group 2, three other stages--in group 1. Mean pain at biopsy was significantly (p < 0.001) lower in group 2. Thus, addition of sexual nerve blockade to standard paraprostatic block increases efficacy of anesthesia in conduction of transperitoneal biopsy of the prostate.

RESUMEN

The experiments on irradiated dogs with a drained pectoral lymph duct revealed an early accumulation of radiotoxins (diene conjugates and malonic dialdehyde) in the lymph and blood plasmas and; simultaneously, a lowering of water-soluble antioxidants. The prophylactic application of cystamine improved the drain-detoxifying function of the lymphatic system, lowered the level of radiotoxins, and aided in the antioxidant properties of lymph and blood plasmas.

RESUMEN

S,beta-Amidinoethyl thiophosphate, a radioprotective agent that was synthesized and studied, was shown to have certain advantages over cystamine: it was effective when used in a lesser amount; it was less toxic, had higher therapeutic effect, and, in contrast to castamine, it did not inhibit physical efficiency of animals. S,beta-Amidinoethyl thiophosphate and gammaphos were very similar in properties.

RESUMEN

Tri-substituted benzamide derivatives are described as a new class of antiviral drugs. Three compounds (3, N-acetylaminobenzamide, 3, N-butyrylaminobenzamide, and 3-methoxybenzamide) protected mice inoculated with influenza type A virus. 3, N-acetylaminobenzamide was found to be most active. It is suggested that the antiviral effect may be due to the specific inhibitory action of these compounds on NAD(+)-dependent ADP-ribosylation.

RESUMEN

The paper deals with further search for substances modifying metabolic processes, changing the conditions of virus existence in the host cell and, consequently, possessing a certain antiviral activity. The antiviral effects of aromatic carbonic acids amides including trisubstituted benzamides and nicotinamide were tested. Five out of 8 substances tested possessed antiviral activity which might be due to their capacity to inhibit the activity of the enzymes of ADP-ribosylation. By blocking cellular processes of ADP-ribosylation, the substances under study depressed DNA capacity for reparation, inhibited differentiation and transformation of cells, i.e. had an indirect effect on reproduction of viruses. The universal nature of the processes coursing with participation of NAD(+)-dependent ADP-ribosylation suggests that the range of antiviral activity of inhibitors of mono- and poly-ADP-ribosylation would not be limited to HIV infection but would be rather wide.

RESUMEN

In experiments with albino mice, rats and guinea pigs the effect of ionizing radiation (100 Gy) on brain phospholipids and their fatty acids has been investigated. Upon the development of manifest behavioural disturbances (2 h after irradiation) phospholipid molecules degrade insignificantly. Some changes in the relative content of phospholipids and their fatty acids are mainly found in the rat synaptosomal fraction: this may be responsible for the disturbances in the sensitivity of the receptor apparatus of cell membranes.
