Schisandra chinensis is a woody vine native to China, Korea, and Russia, which has been used as a traditional herbal remedy to treat male infertility. As very little information is available concerning its effects on ejaculated spermatozoa, the aim of this study was to investigate the chemical, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties of the S. chinensis berry (Omija) extract followed by an assessment of its in vitro effects on bovine sperm function and oxidative balance. Phytochemical components of the Omija extract were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The content of polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids was assessed by spectrophotometric protocols. Antioxidant characteristics of the Omija extract were determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and molybdenum-reducing antioxidant power (MRAP) assays. The disc diffusion method and determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration were applied to study the antibacterial properties of Schisandra. Thirty semen samples were exposed to different concentrations of Omija (1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 75 µg/mL) for 0, 2, and 24 h. Sperm motility, mitochondrial activity, and superoxide and reactive oxygen species production, as well as total antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage to proteins and lipids were determined. Our data reveal that the Omija extract, particularly at a concentration range within 5-50 µg/mL, exhibited dose-dependent motion-promoting and metabolism-enhancing properties, accompanied by significant antioxidant effects. We may conclude that the biomolecules present in the Omija extract such as schisandrins and phenolic molecules offer protection to critical sperm structures against oxidative insults and/or possible bacterial contamination, leading to a higher preservation of mammalian sperm viability and functional activity.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the microbiological quality of chicken thighs after treatment by fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and savory (Satureja hortensis) essential oil, stored under vacuum packaging (VP) at 4 ± 0.5 °C for a period of 16 days. The following treatments of chicken thighs were used: Air-packaging control samples (APCS), vacuum-packaging control samples (VPC), vacuum-packaging (VP) control samples with rapeseed oil (VPRO), VP (vacuum-packaging) with fennel essential oil at concentrations 0.2% v/w (VP + F), and VP with savory essential oil at concentration 0.2% v/w (VP + S). The quality assessment of APCS, VPC, VPRO, VP + F and VP + S products was established by microbiological analysis. The microbiological parameters as the total viable counts of bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and Pseudomonas spp. were detected. Bacterial species were identified with the MALDI-TOF MS Biotyper. The combination of essential oils and vacuum packaging had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on the reduction of total viable counts (TVC) compared with control group without vacuum packaging and the untreated control group. Though 15 genera and 46 species were isolated with scores higher than 2.3 from the chicken samples.

Isolated and structurally confirmed, eleven flavonoids from propolis were examined for their cytotoxicity toward human colon cancer and human breast cancer cells. Their effect on induction of apoptosis and their antioxidative activities were also evaluated. Six flavonoids induced cytotoxic effects in both cell lines. Luteolin had a marked effect on both cell lines, especially on HCT-116 cells (IC50 72h, 66.86µM). Also, luteolin was observed to have the highest apoptotic potential after 72h treatment of examined cell lines (27.13% and 37.09%, respectively). Myricetin exhibited selective inhibition of cell growth (IC50 114.75µM) and induced apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells only. Luteolin and galangin exhibited prooxidative properties 24h after the treatment in HCT-116 cells, while myricetin induced prooxidative effects in MDA-MB-231 cells. On the other hand, selected flavonoids exhibited antioxidative properties 72h after the treatment, decreasing superoxide anion radical and nitrite levels in both cell lines. Cytotoxic and proapoptotic effects on colon and breast cancer cell lines and the influence on their redox status make tested flavonoids good candidates for developing new anticancer drugs.

In the present study, five root extracts of Onosma visianii Clem were investigated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity. On the basis of HPLC-PDA analysis, these extracts have proved to be a rich source of naphthoquinones as natural colourants for food and cosmetic industry. All investigated root extracts contain acetylshikonin, isobutyrylshikonin and α-methylbutyrylshikonin as major compounds. As the most abundant source of active compounds for antitumour therapy, acetone, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts showed strong cytotoxic activity towards HCT-116 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. Also, these extracts induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in HCT-116 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a complex resinous sticky substance that honeybees collect from buds and exudates of various plants. Owing to its versatile biological and pharmacological activities, propolis is widely used in medicines, cosmetics and foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic and antioxidative effects of various ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs) on human colon cancer cell line HCT-116 and compare them with their composition determined by HPLC-DAD. RESULTS: The most abundant flavonoids in all samples were chrysin, pinocembrin and galangin (12.697-40.811 µg mg⁻¹), while the main phenolic acids were caffeic acid, ferulic acid and isoferulic acid. Dose- and time-dependent inhibition of growth of HCT-116 cells was observed for all propolis samples, with IC50 values ranging from 26.33 to 143.09 µg mL⁻¹. Differences in cytotoxic activity of propolis samples were associated with differences in their composition. All EEP samples reduced both superoxide anion radical and nitrite levels and also had strong DPPH-scavenging activity. CONCLUSION: All tested propolis samples had pronounced cytotoxic and antioxidative activities.
