BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, imposing an enormous economic burden on individuals and human society. Laboratory studies have identified several drugs that target mitophagy for the prevention and treatment of CVD. Only a few of these drugs have been successful in clinical trials, and most studies have been limited to animal and cellular models. Furthermore, conventional drugs used to treat CVD, such as antiplatelet agents, statins, and diuretics, often result in adverse effects on patients' cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory systems. In contrast, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained significant attention for its unique theoretical basis and clinical efficacy in treating CVD. PURPOSE: This paper systematically summarizes all the herbal compounds, extracts, and active monomers used to target mitophagy for the treatment of CVD in the last five years. It provides valuable information for researchers in the field of basic cardiovascular research, pharmacologists, and clinicians developing herbal medicines with fewer side effects, as well as a useful reference for future mitophagy research. METHODS: The search terms "cardiovascular disease," "mitophagy," "herbal preparations," "active monomers," and "cardiac disease pathogenesis" in combination with "natural products" and "diseases" were used to search for studies published in the past five years until January 2024. RESULTS: Studies have shown that mitophagy plays a significant role in the progression and development of CVD, such as atherosclerosis (AS), heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI), myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI), cardiac hypertrophy, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmia. Herbal compound preparations, crude extracts, and active monomers have shown potential as effective treatments for these conditions. These substances protect cardiomyocytes by inducing mitophagy, scavenging damaged mitochondria, and maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. They display notable efficacy in combating CVD. CONCLUSION: TCM (including herbal compound preparations, extracts, and active monomers) can treat CVD through various pharmacological mechanisms and signaling pathways by inducing mitophagy. They represent a hotspot for future cardiovascular basic research and a promising candidate for the development of future cardiovascular drugs with fewer side effects and better therapeutic efficacy.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, poses a significant public health threat. Reperfusion therapy, though the preferred treatment for AMI, often exacerbates cardiac damage, leading to myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI). Consequently, the development of strategies to reduce MI/RI is an urgent priority in cardiovascular therapy. Chinese medicine, recognized for its multi-component, multi-pathway, and multi-target capabilities, provides a novel approach for alleviating MI/RI. A key area of interest is the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway. This pathway is instrumental in regulating inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and ferroptosis in MI/RI. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway's structure and its influence on MI/RI. Additionally, it reviews the latest research on leveraging Chinese medicine to modulate the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in MI/RI treatment.

Gait disturbance is a manifestation of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). The posterolateral thalamus (PL), whose blood is mainly supplied by the P2 segment of posterior cerebral artery (P2-PCA), plays pivotal roles in gait regulation. We investigated the influence of the distance between P2-PCA and PL on gait with varying CSVD burden. 71 participants were divided into low and high CSVD burden groups. The distance from P2-PCA to PL was measured using 7 T TOF-MRA and categorized into an immediate or distant PCA-to-thalamus pattern. Functional connectivity (FC) and voxel-based morphometry were assessed to evaluate functional and structural alterations. In the low CSVD burden group, immediate PCA-to-thalamus supply strongly correlates with longer step length and higher wave phase time percent, and exhibited enhanced FCs in left supplementary motor area, right precentral cortex (PreCG.R). While in the high CSVD burden group, no association between PCA-to-thalamus pattern and gait was found, and we observed reduced FC in PreCG.R with immediate PCA-to-thalamus pattern. Higher CSVD burden was associated with decreased gray matter density in bilateral thalamus. However, no significant structural thalamic change was observed between the two types of PCA-to-thalamus patterns in all patients. Our study demonstrated patients with immediate PCA-to-thalamus supply exhibited better gait performance in low CSVD burden populations, which also correlated with enhanced FCs in motor-related cortex, indicating the beneficial effects of the immediate PCA-to-thalamus supply pattern. In the higher burden CSVD populations, the effects of PCA-to-thalamus pattern on gait are void, attributable to the CSVD-related thalamic destruction and impairment of thalamus-related FC.

INTRODUCTION: Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolium are traditional Chinese herb medicines and similar in morphology and some chemical components but differ in drug properties, so they cannot be mixed. However, the processed products of them are often sold in the form of slices, powder, and capsules, which are difficult to identify by traditional morphological methods. Furthermore, an accurate evaluation of P. ginseng, P. quinquefolium and the processed products have not been conducted. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a catalysed hairpin assembly (CHA) identification method for authenticating products made from P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) differences. METHOD: By analysing the differences of SNP in internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) in P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium to design CHA-specific hairpins. Establish a sensitive and efficient CHA method that can identify P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium, use the sequencing technology to verify the accuracy of this method in identifying Panax products, and compare this method with high-resolution melting (HRM). RESULTS: The reaction conditions of CHA were as follows: the ratio of forward and reverse primers, 20:1; hairpin concentration, 5 ng/µL. Compared with capillary electrophoresis, this method had good specificity and the limit of detection was 0.5 ng/µL. The result of Panax product identification with CHA method were coincidence with that of the sequencing method; the positive rate of CHA reaction was 100%. CONCLUSION: This research presents an effective identification method for authenticating P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium products, which is helpful to improve the quality of Panax products.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the main components and potential mechanism of Shuxuening Injection (SXNI) in the treatment of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) through network pharmacology and in vivo research. METHODS: The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) and PharmMapper databases were used to extract and evaluate the effective components of Ginkgo biloba leaves, the main component of SXNI. The Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and GeneCards databases were searched for disease targets and obtain the drug target and disease target intersections. The active ingredient-target network was built using Cytoscape 3.9.1 software. The STRING database, Metascape online platform, and R language were used to obtain the key targets and signaling pathways of the anti-MIRI effects of SXNI. In order to verify the therapeutic effect of different concentrations of SXNI on MIRI in rats, 60 rats were first divided into 5 groups according to random number table method: the sham operation group, the model group, SXNI low-dose (3.68 mg/kg), medium-dose (7.35 mg/kg), and high-dose (14.7 mg/kg) groups, with 12 rats in each group. Then, another 60 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: the sham operation group, the model group, SXNI group (14.7 mg/kg), SXNI+LY294002 group, and LY294002 group, with 12 rats in each group. The drug was then administered intraperitoneally at body weight for 14 days. The main biological processes were validated using in vivo testing. Evans blue/triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) double staining, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and Western blot analysis were used to investigate the efficacy and mechanism of SXNI in MIRI rats. RESULTS: Eleven core targets and 30 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were selected. Among these, the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/ protein kinase B (AKT) pathway was closely related to SXNI treatment of MIRI. In vivo experiments showed that SXNI reduced the myocardial infarction area in the model group, improved rat heart pathological damage, and reduced the cardiomyocyte apoptosis rate (all P<0.01). After SXNI treatment, the p-PI3K/PI3K and p-AKT/AKT ratios as well as B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) protein expression in cardiomyocytes were increased, while the Bax and cleaved caspase 3 protein expression levels were decreased (all P<0.05). LY294002 partially reversed the protective effect of SXNI on MIRI. CONCLUSION: SXNI protects against MIRI by activating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a serious disease leading to significant disability in humans worldwide. Increasing evidence suggests that some microRNAs (miRNAs) participate in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke. A key role for MiR-212 has been found in neuronal function and synaptic plasticity. Ischemic stroke can be effectively treated with electroacupuncture (EA); however, there is a lack of understanding of the relevant mechanisms. In this study, we employed behavioral test and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to detect behavioral and brain function alterations in rats suffering from ischemic stroke. The efficacy of EA therapy and miR-212-5p's role in this process were also evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty rats were randomly divided into the following groups: Sham, middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R), MCAO/R + EA, MCAO/R + EA + antagomir-negative control and MCAO/R + EA + antagomir-212-5p groups. Behavioral changes were assessed by Catwalk gait analysis prior to and after modeling. Rs-fMRI was performed at one week after EA treatment, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) were calculated to reveal neural activity. Furthermore, neuronal apoptosis in the ischemic penumbra was analyzed using a TUNEL assay. Treatment with EA significantly improved the performance of rats in the behavioral test. The motor and cognition-related brain regions showed decreased ALFF and ReHo following focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion, and EA treatment could reactivate these brain regions. Moreover, EA treatment significantly decreased MCAO/R-induced cell death. However, the transfection of antagomir-212-5p attenuated the therapeutic effect of EA. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the results suggested that EA improved the behavioral and imaging outcomes of ischemic stroke through miR-212-5p.

Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome that represents the advanced stage of cardiovascular disease, characterized by systolic and diastolic dysfunction of the heart. Despite continuous updates in HF treatment drugs, the morbidity and mortality rates remain high, necessitating ongoing exploration for new therapeutic targets. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is the serine/threonine protein kinase which responds to adenosine monophosphate (AMP) levels.Activation of AMPK shifts cellular metabolic patterns from synthesis to catabolism, enhancing energy metabolism in pathological conditions such as inflammation, ischemia, obesity, and aging. Numerous studies have identified AMPK as a vital target for HF treatment, with herbal monomers/extracts and compounds affecting key signaling factors including rapamycin targeting protein (mTOR), silencing regulator protein 1 (SIRT1), nuclear transcription factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) through regulation of the AMPK signaling pathway.This modulation can achieve the effects of improving metabolism, autophagy, reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the treatment of heart failure, with the advantages of multi-targeting, comprehensive action and low toxicity.The modulation of the AMPK pathway by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has emerged as a crucial research direction for the prevention and treatment of HF, but a systematic summary and generalization in this field is lacking. This article provides an overview of the composition, regulation, and mechanism of the AMPK signaling pathway's influence on HF, as well as a summary of current research on the regulation of the AMPK pathway by TCM for HF prevention and treatment. The aim is to serve as a reference for the diagnosis and treatment of HF using TCM and the development of new drugs.

BACKGROUND: Xylazine is an α 2 -adrenergic agonist that is commonly used as a veterinary tranquilizer and is increasingly present in the unregulated US drug supply since at least 2019. There are many suspected clinical complications of xylazine use, including unusual skin wounds, atypical overdose presentations, and possible dependence and withdrawal syndromes. However, there are few reports of cutaneous manifestations of xylazine in patients who inject drugs that can guide diagnosis and management in patients with confirmed xylazine toxicology. CASE SUMMARY: We present the cases of 3 stably housed patients in Connecticut with opioid use disorder and intravenous use of fentanyl who presented with atypical, chronic wounds at the site of injection drug use. Xylazine toxicology sent on all 3 patients was positive. All patients were seen by wound care and dermatology, and 1 patient was followed by infectious diseases. Wound care management strategies are discussed as well as harm reduction strategies. For all patients, the dose of their medication for opioid use disorder was increased to decrease frequency of drug use given concern that patients were exposed to a drug supply containing xylazine. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This case report presents wound characteristics that raise the index of suspicion for xylazine-involved injection wounds and might assist in their diagnosis and management. There is urgent need for more reporting of such cases as well as rigorous research to understand the potential impact of xylazine on people who use drugs. Multidisciplinary best practices should be established.

With the development of imaging technology and artificial intelligence, hyperspectral imaging technology provides a fast, non-destructive, intelligent, and precise new method for the analysis of Chinese materia medica(CMM). This paper summarized the methods and applications of hyperspectral imaging technology combined with intelligent analysis technology in the field of CMM in recent years, focusing on the acquisition and preprocessing of hyperspectral data, intelligent analysis methods of hyperspectral data, and practical cases of these technologies in the field of CMM. Hyperspectral data of CMM can provide spectral information with nanometer-level resolution and rich spatial texture information simultaneously. This paper summarized the acquisition process, including black-and-white board calibration and region-of-interest extraction, and preprocessing methods including smoothing, differentiation, scale-space, and scattering correction. The feature extraction methods in terms of spectral, spatial, color, and texture were briefly described, and common modeling methods were summarized. Finally, this paper reviewed the research cases of the application of the above methods to the fields of CMM, such as authenticity identification, origin tracing, variety recognition, year identification, sulfur fumigation degree determination, and quantitative measurement.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of intense pulsed light (IPL) in the treatment of severe chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (coGVHD). METHODS: A prospective cohort study. Seventeen patients with severe coGVHD were selected for inclusion in this study. All subjects were treated with IPL every fortnight together with conventional treatment, observation time points were pre-treatment (W0), 4 weeks post-treatment (W4), 8 weeks post-treatment (W8) and 12 weeks post-treatment (W12). Dry eye related examinations include Tear meniscus height (TMH), Non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT), Schirmer I test, Tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT), Ocular surface staining (OSS) and assessment of meibomian gland. Corneal epithelial cell morphology and inflammatory cell infiltration were analyzed by corneal confocal microscopy, while goblet cell density and squamous epithelial grade were assessed by conjunctival imprinted cytology. RESULTS: Patients did not experience any adverse reactions during the follow-up period. All subjects showed significant improvement in clinical symptoms and most signs after IPL treatment. The corneal confocal microscopy showed that the number of dendritic cells infiltrates in the corneal stroma was significantly reduced after IPL treatment (p < 0.001). Conjunctival blot cytology suggested an increase in the number of conjunctival goblet cells from 5.12 ± 2.71 cells/mm2 before treatment to 22.00 ± 4.58 cells/mm2 after treatment, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). An improvement in conjunctival epithelial cell morphology and a decrease in squamous epithelial grade was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: IPL treatment can effectively increase tear film stability in patients with severe coGVHD without significant side effects.

In order to improve the position high-precision synchronization performance of multi-motor synchronous control, a multi-motor position synchronization control method based on non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control (NFTSMC) combined with an improved deviation coupling control structure (Improved Deviation Coupling Control(IDCC), NFTSMC+IDCC). Firstly, this paper designs a sliding mode controller using a non-singular fast terminal sliding mode surface with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) as the control object. Secondly, the deviation coupling is improved to enhance the coupling between multiple motors and achieve position synchronization. Finally, the simulation results show that the total error of multi-motor position synchronization under NFTSMC control is 0.553r in the simulation of multi-motor synchronization control under the same working conditions, which is 2.873r and 1.772r less than that of SMC and FTSMC in terms of speed error, and the anti-disturbance performance is 83.68% and 76.22% higher than that of both of them, respectively. In the subsequent simulation of the improved multi-motor position synchronization structure, the total error of the multi-motor position is in the range of 0.56r-0.58r at three speeds, which is much smaller than the synchronization error under the Ring Coupling Control (RCC) structure and Deviation Coupling Control (DCC) structure, showing a better The synchronization error is much smaller than that of the RCC structure and DCC structure, which shows better position synchronization performance. Therefore, the multi-motor position synchronization control method proposed in this paper has a good position synchronization effect and achieves the control effect of small displacement error and fast convergence of the multi-motor position synchronization control system after being disturbed, the control performance is significantly improved.

OBJECTIVE: To detect the body surface temperature of the relevant back-shu points in patients with chronic persistent asthma by infrared thermal imaging technology, and observe the specific changes of the body surface temperature of the relevant back-shu points under the condition of lung disease. METHODS: Forty-five patients with chronic persistent asthma (observation group) and 45 healthy subjects (control group) were selected. The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) were measured by BK-MT02A medical infrared thermography. RESULTS: The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The body surface temperature of bilateral Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17) was higher than that of ipsilateral Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in the two groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in body surface temperature between ipsilateral Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17), between ipsilateral Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The pathological increase of body surface temperature of Feishu (BL 13), Geshu (BL 17), Pishu (BL 20) and Shenshu (BL 23) in patients with chronic persistent asthma indicates that above acupoints have specificity in reflecting lung diseases. The Feishu (BL 13) and Geshu (BL 17), which have significantly increased body surface temperature, not only provide objective basis for the pathological pathogenesis of "deficiency in origin and excess in symptom" in patients with chronic persistent asthma, but also reflect the different expressions of different acupoints on the same meridian for the lung diseases.

BACKGROUND: The original meta-analysis of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is already outdated, owing to the latest trial results. This study aimed to clarify the efficacy and adverse events of cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC compared to conventional therapy for advanced and platinum-sensitive recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer (OC). METHODS: In this meta-analysis, phase II/III controlled trials regarding 'HIPEC' and 'ovarian cancer' were searched for in electronic databases from inception to March 2022. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. The pooled hazard ratio [HR] in the HIPEC group for progression-free survival (PFS) (HR = 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.45-0.83, p = .002) and overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.51-0.82, p < .001) were improved in the HIPEC group compared with the non-HIPEC group. For primary advanced disease, OS and PFS were significantly increased in patients receiving interval debulking surgery + HIPEC, whereas PFS was not significantly different between primary debulking surgery (PDS) + HIPEC and PDS alone. For platinum-sensitive recurrent disease, no correlation was observed for PFS and OS between the HIPEC and non-HIPEC groups (p < .05). The incidence of procedure-related complications was higher in the HIPEC group than in the non-HIPEC group (odds ratio = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.24-3.01, p < .01). The morbidity of leukopenia, neutropenia, nausea, hypoalbuminemia, and grades III-IV electrolyte disturbance was higher in the HIPEC group than in the non-HIPEC group. However, HIPEC administration reduced the risk of intra-abdominal bleeding and constipation. CONCLUSION: HIPEC-based regimens improved the clinical prognosis for primary advanced OC, whereas no significant value was elicited for recurrent OC.

RESUMEN

Sepsis is defined as a dysregulated immune response to infection that leads to multiple organ dysfunction. To date, though a growing body of knowledge has gained insight into the clinical risk factors, pathobiology, treatment response, and recovery methods, sepsis remains a significant concern and clinical burden. Therefore, further study is urgently needed to alleviate the acute and chronic outcomes. Berberine (BBR), a traditional Chinese medicine with multiple actions and mechanisms, has been investigated in cellular and rodent animal models of sepsis mainly based on its anti-inflammatory effect. However, the practical application of BBR in sepsis is still lacking, and it is imperative to systematically summarize the study of BBR in sepsis. This review summarized its pharmacological activities and mechanisms in septic-related organ injuries and the potential BBR-based therapeutic strategies for sepsis, which will provide comprehensive references for scientific research and clinical application.

Candida albicans remains the most common species causing invasive candidiasis. In this study, we present the population structure of 551 global C. albicans strains. Of these, the antifungal susceptibilities of 370 strains were tested. Specifically, 66.6% of the azole-nonsusceptible (NS)/non-wild-type (NWT) strains that were tested belonged to Clade 1. A phylogenetic analysis, a principal components analysis, the population structure, and a loss of heterozygosity events revealed two nested subclades in Clade 1, namely, Clade 1-R and Clade 1-R-α, that exhibited higher azole-NS/NWT rates (75.0% and 100%, respectively). In contrast, 6.4% (21/326) of the non-Clade 1-R isolates were NS/NWT to at least 1 of 4 azoles. Notably, all of the Clade 1-R-α isolates were pan-azole-NS/NWT that carried unique A114S and Y257H double substitutions in Erg11p and had the overexpression of ABC-type efflux pumps introduced by the substitution A736V in transcript factor Tac1p. It is worth noting that the Clade 1-R and Clade 1-R-α isolates were from different cities that are distributed over a large geographic span. Our study demonstrated the presence of specific phylogenetic subclades that are associated with antifungal resistance among C. albicans Clade 1, which calls for public attention on the monitoring of the future spread of these clones. IMPORTANCE Invasive candidiasis is the most common human fungal disease among hospitalized patients, and Candida albicans is the predominant pathogen. Considering the large number of infected cases and the limited alternative therapies, the azole-resistance of C. albicans brings a huge clinical threat. Here, our study suggested that antifungal resistance in C. albicans could also be associated with phylogenetic lineages. Specifically, it was revealed that more than half of the azole-resistant C. albicans strains belonged to the same clade. Furthermore, two nested subclades of the clade exhibited extremely high azole-resistance. It is worth noting that the isolates of two subclades were from different cities that are distributed over a large geographic span in China. This indicates that the azole-resistant C. albicans subclades may develop into serious public health concerns.

This study proposed an AO-SBR (Anaerobic Aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor) combined with iron-carbon micro-electrolysis (ICME) particles system for sewage treatment at low temperature and explored the dephosphorisation mechanism and microbial community structure. The experimental results illustrated that ICME particles contributed to phosphorus removal, metabolic mechanism of poly-phosphorus accumulating organism (PAO) and microbial community structure in the AO-SBR system. The optimal treatment effect was achieved under the conditions of pH 7, DO 3.0 mg/L and particle dosage of 2.6 g Fe-C/g MLSS, and the removal rates of COD, TP, NH4+-N and TN reached 80.56%, 91.46%, 69.42% and 57.57%. The proportion of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) increased from 4.54% in the SBR system to 10.89% in the ICME-SBR system at 10°C. Additionally, the metabolic rate of PAOs was promoted, and the activities of DHA and ETS both reached the maximum value of 13.34 and 102.88 µg·mg-1VSS·h-1. These results suggest that the ICME particles could improve the performance of activated sludge under low-temperature conditions. This technology provides a new way for upgrading the performance of sewage treatment in the cold area.

The treatment of garlic processing wastewater was investigated in a UASB-SBR system. The experimental results showed that UASB was successfully started up after 64 days of continuous operation with COD removal rate of 45%. SBR start-up phase went through 60 days and the COD removal rate achieved 96%. UASB ran under optimal conditions (HRT of 45 h, pH of 7.5, and temperature of 35 ± 2°C) for 14d and performed well in organic matter treatment. SBR played a major part in nitrogen and phosphorus removal when running under optimal conditions (cycle time of 12 h, temperature of 25°C, organic loading of 0.72 kgCOD/(m3·d), and COD of 6000 mg/L) for 18d. Secondly, the microbial community structure indicated that the abundance of ß-Proteobacteria and α-Proteobacteria in the sludge reached 30.05% and 47.57%, respectively, and played a crucial part for the organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the SBR. After UASB-SBR system had been stabilised with influent COD of 9800 mg/L, the average COD, TP, NH3-N and TN removal rates were 99%, 94.82%, 87.07% and 94.87%, respectively, which were 3%, -2%, 1% and 3.5% higher than SBR running alone under optimal conditions. UASB coupled with SBR process had an excellent performance for high-concentration garlic processing wastewater.

INTRODUCTION: Since the most prominent effect of iron is increasing R2* and R2 relaxation rates, the iron-overload liver shows little signal with conventional T1ρ sequences like RARE. Whereas UTE MR imaging sequences can detect the signal from short T2/T2* relaxation components in tissues. This study aims to evaluate the difference in R1ρ profiles and compare the correlations between RARE-based and UTE-based sequences with LIC in assessing rat liver iron overload. METHODS: Iron dextran (Sigma, 100 mg Fe/ml) was injected into thirty-five rats (25-100 mg/kg body weight), while the rats in the control group were injected with saline (n=5). The liver specimen was taken after one week. A portion of the largest hepatic lobe was extracted to quantify the LIC by inductively coupled plasma, and the remaining liver tissue was stored in 4% buffered paraformaldehyde for 24 h before MRI. Spin-lock preparation with RARE readout and 2D UTE readout pulses were developed to quantify R1ρ on a Bruker 11.7T MR system. RESULTS: The mean R1ρ value of the rat liver with UTE-based R1ρ sequence was significantly higher compared to the RARE-based R1ρ sequence (p<0.001). Spearman's correlation analysis (two-tailed) indicated that the R1ρ values were significantly correlated with LIC for both UTE-R1ρ and RARER1ρ sequences (r = 0.727, P < 0.001, and r = 0.712, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The current study adds to evidence that there is a correlation between iron concentration and R1ρ. Moreover, the UTE-based R1ρ sequence is more sensitive to the liver iron than the RAREbased R1ρ sequence. R1ρ might serve as a complementary imaging biomarker for liver iron overload quantification.

Bayesian network Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of different Chinese patent medicines in the treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy. The PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP were searched for the randomized controlled trial(RCT) from the inception to May 2023. The quality of the included RCT was evaluated by the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool, and the data were analyzed by RStudio 3.6.3 calling the "gemtc" package. A total of 96 RCTs involving 8 452 patients, 11 Chinese patent medicines, and 8 outcome indicators were included. Network Meta-analysis is described as follows.(1)In terms of improving clinical total effective rate, except Yixinshu Capsules + conventional western medicine, Shexiang Baoxin Pills + conventional western medicine, and Xinshuai Mixture + conventional western medicine, the other Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional western medicine were superior to conventional western medicine alone, and Shenqi Yiqi Dropping Pills + conventional western medicine had the best effect.(2)In terms of improving left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF), except Yixinshu Capsules + conventional western medicine and Shensong Yangxin Capsules + conventional western medicine, other Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional western medicine outperformed conventional western medicine alone, and Shexiang Baoxin Pills + conventional western medicine had the best effect.(3)In terms of reducing left ventricular end-diastolic dimension(LVEDD), Getong Tongluo Capsules + conventional western medicine, Xinshuai Mixture + conventional western medicine, Huangqi Mixture + conventional western medicine, Tongxinluo Capsules + conventional western medicine, Wenxin Granules + conventional western medicine, and Qili Qiangxin Capsules + conventional western medicine were better than conventional western medicine alone, and Wenxin Granules + conventional western medicine had the best effect.(4)There was no significant difference in reducing left ventricular end-systolic diameter(LVESD) between Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional western medicine and conventional western medicine alone.(5)In terms of improving 6-minute walking trail(6MWT), Yangxinshi Tablets + conventional western medicine, Yixinshu Capsules + conventional western medicine, Shenqi Yiqi Dropping Pills + conventional western medicine, Wenxin Granules + conventional western medicine, and Qili Qiangxin Capsules + conventional western medicine were superior to conventional western medicine alone, and Shenqi Yiqi Dropping Pills + conventional western medicine had the best effect.(6)In reducing brain natriuretic peptide(BNP), Xinshuai Mixture + conventional western medicine ourperformed conventional western medicine alone.(7)In reducing hypersensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP), Shenqi Yiqi Dropping Pills + conventional western medicine, Qili Qiangxin Capsules + conventional western medicine outperformed conventional western medicine alone, and Qili Qiangxin Capsules + conventional western medicine had the best effect.(8)In terms of safety, adverse reactions were reported in both groups. In conclusion, Chinese patent medicine combined with conventional western medicine were more effective in the treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy. The combinations relieve clinical symptoms and improve cardiac function indexes, and thus can be used according to the patients' conditions in clinical practice. However, limited by the quality and sample size of the included studies, the conclusion remains to be verified by multi-center, large-sample, and high-quality RCT in the future.

BACKGROUND: Uterine contraction pain is a common postpartum condition that often plagues mothers and can interfere with feeding and normal life for young children. Many investigations have demonstrated that moxibustion has certain advantages in the treatment of uterine contraction pain, but the effectiveness, safety, and advantages of various methods have not been confirmed by high-quality meta-analyses. This study will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and effectiveness in moxibustion, in order to provide a reference for further clinical treatment for uterine contraction pain. METHODS: Nine electronic databases, including PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, Wan-Fang Database and 1 clinical trial register platforms: ClinicalTrials.gov (www.ClinicalTrials.gov/) will be searched using English and Chinese search strategies. All eligible studies are randomized controlled trials of moxibustion treatment for uterine contraction pain, published on or before December 31, 2021. The screening process will be developed by 2 independent authors, and network meta-analysis will be performed with RevMan (V5.3) software. RESULTS: This study will provide a high-quality review that will be used to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of moxibustion for the treatment of uterine contraction pain. CONCLUSION: The results of this study will provide evidence to support whether moxibustion can effectively intervene in uterine contraction pain.
