RESUMEN

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of licorice and rutin on production performance, egg quality, and mucosa antioxidant levels in Chinese yellow quail. A total of 240 Chinese Yellow Quail (400-day-old) were randomly distributed into 5 groups: the Control group, fed with a basic diet; the LR1 group, fed with basal diet supplemented with 300 + 100 mg licorice and rutin mixture/kg diet; the LR2 group, fed with basal diet supplemented with 300 + 200 mg licorice and rutin mixture/kg diet; the LR3 group, fed with basal diet supplemented with 600 + 100 mg licorice and rutin mixture/kg diet and the LR4 group, fed with basal diet supplemented with 600 + 200 mg licorice and rutin mixture/kg diet. Compared with the control, supplementation with the licorice and rutin mixture improved the laying rate and eggshell thickness whereas decreased the feed conversion ratio of quails. Moreover, dietary supplementation with the licorice and rutin mixture improved the antioxidant capacity by increasing the activity of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) level and decreasing the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the jejunal mucosa. The licorice and rutin mixture altered the composition of intestinal microbiota by influencing the relative abundances of Bacteroidetes and Bacteroides. The relative abundances of the Bacteroidetes were significantly related to the laying rate of quails. In addition, the mixture of licorice and rutin was also effective in reducing the relative abundance of intestinal Proteobacteria and Enterobacter in quails, reducing the accumulation of antibiotic-resistance genes. The results revealed that supplementation of licorice and rutin mixture to the diet improved production performance, egg quality, and antioxidant capacity and modified the composition of intestinal microbiota in quails. This study provides a reference for Chinese herbal additives to promote production performance by modulating quail gut microbes.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been recognized as a key regulator in plant development and metabolism. Recent reports showed that the miRNAs of medicinal plants not only act as a critical modulator in secondary metabolism but also had a great potential of performing cross-kingdom gene regulation. Although several plant miRNA repositories have been publicly available, no miRNA database specific for medicinal plants has been reported to date. Here, we report the first version of MepmiRDB (medicinal plant microRNA database), which is freely accessible at http://mepmirdb.cn/mepmirdb/index.html. This database accommodates thousands of miRNA candidates belonging to 29 medicinal plant species. The miRNA information on sequences, expression patterns and regulatory networks has been included in the functional modules of the database. Specifically, the 'Sequence' module provides the sequences of the mature miRNAs and their precursors, and the structure information of the precursors. Moreover, the processing and small RNA accumulation signals on the miRNA precursors are also included in the 'Sequence' module. The organ/growth condition-specific expression information of the mature miRNAs has been stored in the 'Expression' module. The 'Interaction' module offers the information of the degradome-validated miRNA-target pairs of eight plant species. The 'Search' module enables users to search for the miRNAs by plant species and miRNA families, or by sequences. All data in this database are available for download. Taken together, the functional modules of MepmiRDB ensure its importance and timeliness for mechanistic and functional studies on the medicinal plant miRNAs.

Zhe-Maidong (Ophiopogon japonicus (L.f.) Ker-Gawl) is a traditional medicinal herb in the family Liliaceae that has significant pharmacological effects on immunity and cardiovascular disease. In this study, three different growth stages of Zhe-Maidong were investigated using RNA-seq, and a total of 16.4 Gb of raw data was obtained. After filtering and assembling, 96,738 unigenes with an average length of 605.3 bp were ultimately generated. A total of 77,300 unigenes were annotated using information from five databases, including the NT, NR, SwissProt, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) databases. Additionally, the mechanisms of flavonoid, saponin and polysaccharide biosynthesis and of accumulation at different stages of tuber development were also characterized. From the first to third years, the contents of flavonoids, saponins and polysaccharides all increased, whereas the expression levels of related genes decreased in the flavonoid and saponin pathways and first increased and then decreased in the polysaccharide pathway. The results of this study provide the most comprehensive expressed sequence resource for Zhe-Maidong and will expand the available O. japonicus gene library and facilitate further genome-wide research and analyses of this species.
