Jellyfish dermatitis is a common medical problem caused by jellyfish stings. However, there are no targeted and effective medications for their treatment. Here, the biological activity of fucoidan for treatment of jellyfish dermatitis was investigated for the first time. 3 mg/mL Fucoidan attenuated the inflammatory effects of Nemopilema nomurai nematocyst venom (NnNV), including dermal toxicity and myotoxicity. Fucoidan may decrease the inflammatory effects of NnNV by downregulating MAPK and NF-κB pathways. This may be attributed to the inhibitory effect of fucoidan on metalloproteinases and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in NnNV. 3 mg/mL fucoidan reduced the metalloproteinase activity in NnNV from 316.33 ± 20.84 U/mg to 177.33 ± 25.36 U/mg, while the inhibition of PLA2 activity in NnNV by 1 mg/mL fucoidan could reach 37.67 ± 3.42 %. Besides, external application of 3 mg/mL fucoidan can effectively alleviate the symptoms of jellyfish dermatitis. These observations suggest that fucoidan has considerable potential for treatment of jellyfish dermatitis and could be regarded as a novel medicine for jellyfish envenomation. This study provides new ideas for treatment of jellyfish envenomation and suggests evidence for the use of fucoidan in the treatment of jellyfish dermatitis as well as broadens the potential application of fucoidan in clinical practice.

Background: A comprehensive understanding of phenotypes related to CKD will facilitate the identification and management of CKD. We aimed to panoramically test and validate associations between multiple phenotypes and CKD using a phenotype-wide association study (PheWAS). Methods: 15,815 subjects from cross-sectional cohorts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2006) were randomly 50:50 split into training and testing sets. CKD was defined as eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73m2. We performed logistic regression analyses between each of 985 phenotypes with CKD in the training set (false discovery rate < 1%) and validated in the testing set (false discovery rate < 1% ). Random forest (RF) model, Nagelkerke's Pseudo-R2, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) were used to validate the identified phenotypes. Results: We identified 18 phenotypes significantly related to CKD, among which retinol, red cell distribution width (RDW), and C-peptide were less researched. The top 5 identified phenotypes were blood urea nitrogen (BUN), homocysteine (HCY), retinol, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and osmolality in RF importance ranking. Besides, BUN, HCY, PTH, retinol, and uric acid were the most important phenotypes based on Pseudo-R2. AUROC of the RF model was 0.951 (full model) and 0.914 (top 5 phenotypes). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated associations between multiple phenotypes with CKD from a holistic view, including 3 novel phenotypes: retinol, RDW, and C-peptide. Our findings provided valid evidence for the identification of novel biomarkers for CKD.

OBJECTIVES: To explore gingerol's potential mechanism for treating liver cancer using network pharmacology and molecular docking technology and to conduct in-vitro experiments of human liver cancer cell HepG2 to verify important signalling pathways. METHODS: We obtained potential targets of gingerol derivatives (6-gingerol, 8-gingerol and 10-gingerol) from PubChem and SwissTargetPrediction websites and collected related targets for liver cancer with the help of GeneCards. We performed Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis on key targets using the DAVID data platform and combined with Cytoscape 3.7.1 software to construct a component-target-signal pathway interaction map to study its mechanism of action. Subsequently, the components and key proteins were molecularly docked through Autodock Vina software. Finally, the important signal pathways were verified by HepG2 cell in-vitro experiments. KEY FINDINGS: A total of 318 drug targets were screened for gingerol derivatives, and 2509 gene targets related to liver cancer were collected. The Venn diagram showed that there were 104 intersection targets between gingerol derivatives and liver cancer. Module analysis results show that these intersection targets can be divided into 5 modules and 49 nodes. Bioinformatics analysis found that GO obtained 20 important functional items including cancer cell proliferation, protein kinase activity, phosphotransferase activity and kinase activity; KEGG enrichment analysis yielded a total of 20 key signal pathways including the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway. The results of molecular docking show that the binding energy of gingerol derivatives has good binding activity with PI3K and Akt. In-vitro experimental results show that gingerol derivatives and compound gingerol (compound gingerol is composed of 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol and 10-gingerol in a ratio of 7:1.5:1.5) can produce HepG2 cell proliferation inhibition, and each administration group can significantly increase the apoptosis rate of HepG2 cells and the fluorescence intensity of the nucleus and block the cell cycle in the S phase; the results of Western Blot and real-time quantitative PCR show that gingerol derivatives and compound gingerol can down-regulate the expression of Akt and p-Akt and up-regulate the expression of Bax/Bcl-2. And the effect of compound gingerol is more obvious than that of gingerol derivatives. CONCLUSIONS: The results of network pharmacology and experimental validation suggest that gingerol derivatives and compound gingerol can act against liver cancer by acting on the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway.

Prunus mume is a traditional ornamental plant, which owed a unique floral scent. However, the diversity of the floral scent in P. mume cultivars with different aroma types was not identified. In this study, the floral scent of eight P. mume cultivars was studied using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and organic solvent extraction (OSE), combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In total, 66 headspace volatiles and 74 endogenous extracts were putatively identified, of which phenylpropanoids/benzenoids were the main volatile organic compounds categories. As a result of GC-MS analysis, benzyl acetate (1.55-61.26%), eugenol (0.87-6.03%), benzaldehyde (5.34-46.46%), benzyl alcohol (5.13-57.13%), chavicol (0-5.46%), and cinnamyl alcohol (0-6.49%) were considered to be the main components in most varieties. However, the volatilization rate of these main components was different. Based on the variable importance in projection (VIP) values in the orthogonal partial least-squares discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA), differential components of four aroma types were identified as biomarkers, and 10 volatile and 12 endogenous biomarkers were screened out, respectively. The odor activity value (OAV) revealed that several biomarkers, including (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol, pentyl acetate, (E)-cinnamaldehyde, methyl salicylate, cinnamyl alcohol, and benzoyl cyanide, contributed greatly to the strong-scented, fresh-scented, sweet-scented, and light-scented types of P. mume cultivars. This study provided a theoretical basis for the floral scent evaluation and breeding of P. mume cultivars.

Lonicera japonica Thunb. is widely used in traditional medicine systems of East Asian and attracts a large amount of studies on the biosynthesis of its active components. Currently, there is little understanding regarding the regulatory mechanisms behind the accumulation of secondary metabolites during its developmental stages. In this study, published transcriptomic and proteomic data were mined to evaluate potential linkage between protein modification and secondary metabolism during the floral development. Stronger correlations were observed between differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and their corresponding differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) in the comparison of juvenile bud stage (JBS)/third green stage (TGS) vs. silver flowering stage (SFS). Seventy-five and 76 cor-rDEGs and cor-rDAPs (CDDs) showed opposite trends at both transcriptional and translational levels when comparing their levels at JBS and TGS relative to those at SFS. CDDs were mainly involved in elements belonging to the protein metabolism and the TCA cycle. Protein-protein interaction analysis indicated that the interacting proteins in the major cluster were primarily involved in TCA cycle and protein metabolism. In the simple phenylpropanoids biosynthetic pathway of SFS, both phospho-2-dehydro-3-deoxyheptonate aldolase (PDA) and glutamate/aspartate-prephenate aminotransferase (AAT) were decreased at the protein level, but increased at the gene level. A confirmatory experiment indicated that protein ubiquitination and succinylation were more prominent during the early floral developmental stages, in correlation with simple phenylpropanoids accumulation. Taken together, those data indicates that phenylpropanoids metabolism and floral development are putatively regulated through the ubiquitination and succinylation modifications of PDA, AAT, and TCA cycle proteins in L. japonica.

Jellyfish are rich in resources and widely distributed along coastal areas. As a potential approach to respond to jellyfish blooms, the use of jellyfish-derived products is increasing. The citrus spider mite (Panonychus citri) is one of the key citrus pests, negatively impacting the quality and quantity of oranges. Due to the resistance and residue of chemical acaricides, it is important to seek natural substitutes that are environmentally friendly. The field efficacy of the venom from the jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai against P. citri was assayed in a citrus garden. The frozen N. nomurai tentacles were sonicated in different buffers to isolate the venom. The venom isolated by PBS buffer (10 mM, pH 6.0) had the strongest acaricidal activity of the four samples, and the corrected field efficacy 7 days after treatment was up to 95.21%. This study demonstrated that jellyfish has potential use in agriculture.

BACKGROUND: Paeonia ostii seeds were identified as novel sources of edible plant oil with a high proportion of α-linolenic acid, a type of n-3 fatty acid with many health benefits. Due to the unreliability of seed oil content and quality, it is necessary to discover the mechanism underlying lipid biosynthesis in Paeonia ostii seeds. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the key genes involved in lipid biosynthesis in Paeonia ostii seeds by analyzing the relationship among the seed characteristics and the expression patterns of lipid genes in Paeonia ostii during seed development. METHODS: Preliminary research on Paeonia ostii seed development was carried out from 10 days after pollination until maturity, focusing on phenology, oil content and lipid profiles. In addition, we investigated the spatiotemporal expression of 36 lipid biosynthetic genes in Paeonia ostii by using quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS: The results suggested that the development of Paeonia ostii seeds from pollination to maturity could be divided into three periods. The 36 lipid genes showed various spatiotemporal expression patterns and five gene groups with distinct temporal patterns during seed development were identified by clustering analysis of expression data. Furthermore, the relationships between gene expression and lipid/fatty acid accumulation and some candidate key lipid genes were discussed. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided the global patterns of fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis-related gene expression, which are critical to understanding the molecular basis of lipid biosynthesis and identifying the lipid accumulation rate-limiting genes during seed development.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence supporting electroacupuncture (EA) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), but its characteristics have not been well investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness and characteristics of EA in MDD. METHODS: 60 subjects were enrolled-35 in the EA group and 25 in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) group based on their preferences-in an 8-week non-randomised controlled clinical trial. The 24-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-24) and clinical global impression (CGI) were adopted for clinical assessment. The Columbia suicide severity rating scale and adverse event form were used to measure safety and tolerability. The characteristics of EA and SSRIs were compared by analysing seven factors of the HAMD-24. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of HAMD-24 response rate after intervention (P>0.05). Patients treated with EA demonstrated a significant reduction in CGI scores (P<0.05) with fewer adverse events compared with SSRIs (P<0.01). Although HAMD-24 factor analysis showed both EA and SSRIs could improve factor scores in cognitive impairment, diurnal variation, retardation, sleep disturbance, anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair, EA showed greater improvement in anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair than SSRIs (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference between EA and SSRIs in the treatment of MDD with respect to our primary outcome. However, as a potential therapy for MDD, EA appeared to result in greater symptom improvement than SSRI treatment with respect to anxiety/somatisation and feelings of despair. The results of this secondary analysis should be interpreted cautiously given the inherent issues of multiple testing.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effects of acupuncture (manual acupuncture or electroacupuncture) combined with SSRIs for moderate to severe depression improving major clinical symptoms and life quality of the patients on secondary outcomes. DESIGN: Pragmatic, parallel, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: 6 hospitals in China. INTERVENTIONS: 6 weeks of manual acupuncture (MA)+selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), electroacupuncture (EA)+SSRIs, and SSRIs alone. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was response rate of 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) total score at 6th week. The secondary outcomes reported in this analysis were HAMD-17 factor scores at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 10th week and WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) scores at 6th week. RESULTS: 477 patients were randomly assigned into MA + SSRIs (n = 161), EA + SSRIs (n = 160), or SSRIs alone (n = 156) groups. For HAMD-17 (at 6th week), the MA + SSRIs group was significantly better than the SSRIs alone group in retardation factor (p = 0.008), while the EA+SSRIs group was significantly better than the SSRIs alone group in anxiety/somatization factor (p<0.001) and sleep disturbance factor (p = 0.002). For WHOQOL-BREF (at 6th week), the EA + SSRIs group, compared with the SSRIs alone group, produced a more significant improvement in the overall quality of life, general health, physical health, and psychological health (p<0.05). While, the MA + SSRIs group, compared to the SSRIs alone group, showed significant advantage only in psychological health (p = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: Either MA or EA combined SSRIs treatment could improve symptoms and quality of life for patients with moderate to severe depression. The main limitation of this trial was not using a sham control therefore the placebo effect could not be excluded.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are first-line antidepressants, however, only around 60% of patients could benefit from them. Acupuncture is supported by insufficient evidence to help with symptom relieving and SSRIs tolerance. This pragmatic randomized controlled trial compared SSRIs alone versus SSRIs together with manual acupuncture (MA) or electroacupuncture (EA) in moderate to severe depressed patients. Patients were randomly allocated to receive MA + SSRIs (161), EA + SSRIs (160), or SSRIs alone (156) for six weeks, and then followed up for another four weeks. The primary outcome was response rate of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17) at 6th week. The secondary outcomes were HAMD-17 (remission rate, early onset rate, total score), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS: total score), Clinical Global Impression (CGI), Rating Scale for Side Effects (SERS: total and domain scores), number of patients with adjusted dosage of SSRIs and adverse events (AEs). Both MA + SSRIs and EA + SSRIs were significantly better than SSRIs at 6th week on HAMD-17 response rate (RR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.04, 1.42, P = 0.013; RR = 1.27, 95% CI 1.09, 1.48, P = 0.0014), HAMD-17 early onset rate (P < 0.0001), HAMD-17 and SDS total scores (P < 0.05), CGI (P < 0.01), SERS total score (P < 0.01), number of patients with increased dosage of SSRIs (P < 0.01). For HAMD-17 remission rate, EA + SSRIs was significantly higher than SSRIs (P = 0.0083), while MA + SSRIs showed no significant difference at 6th week (P = 0.092). No unintended acupuncture-related severe AE was observed. This study identified that both MA and EA showed beneficial effects in addition to SSRIs alone in patients with moderate to severe depression, and were well tolerated. OBJECTIVES: An environment-wide association study (EWAS) may be useful to comprehensively test and validate associations between environmental factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in an unbiased manner. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2014) were randomly 50:50 spilt into training set and testing set. CVD was ascertained by a self-reported diagnosis of myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease or stroke. We performed multiple linear regression analyses associating 203 environmental factors and 132 clinical phenotypes with CVD in training set (false discovery rate < 5%) and significant factors were validated in the testing set (P < 0.05). Random forest (RF) model was used for multicollinearity elimination and variable importance ranking. Discriminative power of factors for CVD was calculated by area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC). Overall, 43,568 participants with 4084 (9.4%) CVD were included. After adjusting for age, sex, race, body mass index, blood pressure and socio-economic level, we identified 5 environmental variables and 19 clinical phenotypes associated with CVD in training and testing dataset. Top five factors in RF importance ranking were: waist, glucose, uric acid, and red cell distribution width and glycated hemoglobin. AUROC of the RF model was 0.816 (top 5 factors) and 0.819 (full model). Sensitivity analyses reveal no specific moderators of the associations. CONCLUSION: Our systematic evaluation provides new knowledge on the complex array of environmental correlates of CVD. These identified correlates may serve as a complementary approach to CVD risk assessment. Our findings need to be probed in further observational and interventional studies.

In this study, polysaccharides from Grateloupia filicinia (GFP) were extracted and several low molecular weight (Mw) G. filicina polysaccharides (LGFPs) were prepared by the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation method. Additionally, the effect of different experimental conditions on the degradation of GFP was determined. Results showed that the GFP degradation rate was positively related to H2O2 concentration and temperature, and negatively related to pH. Chemical analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) of GFP and LGFPs showed that the degradation caused a slight decrease of total sugar and sulfate content. However, there was no obvious change for monosaccharide contents. Then, the anti-ALV-J activity of GFP and LGFPs were determined in vitro. Results revealed that all of the samples could significantly inhibit ALV-J and lower Mw LGFPs exhibited a stronger suppression, and that the fraction LGFP-3 with Mw 8.7 kDa had the best effect. In addition, the reaction phase assays showed that the inhibition effect was mainly because of the blocking virus adsorption to host cells. Moreover, real-time PCR, western-blot, and IFA were further applied to evaluate the blocking effects of LGFP-3. Results showed that the gene relative expression and gp85 protein for LGFPS-3 groups were all reduced. Data from IFA showed that there was less virus infected cells for 1000 and 200 µg/mL LGFPS-3 groups when compared to virus control. Therefore, lower Mw polysaccharides from G. filicina might supply a good choice for ALV-J prevention and treatment.

RATIONALE: Environmental enrichment (EE) could influence brain plasticity and behavior in rodents. Whether the early EE may predispose individuals to a particular social hierarchy in the social dominance tube test (SDTT) at adulthood is still unknown. OBJECTIVE: The present study directly investigated the influence of EE on competitive success in the SDTT among adult rats. METHODS: Male rats were maintained in EE from postnatal days 21 to 35. Social dominance behavior was determined by SDTT, competitive food foraging test, and mate preference test at adulthood. IBA-1 expression in the hypothalamus was examined using immunohistochemistry and western blot. RESULTS: EE rats were prone to become submissive during a social encounter with standard environment (SE) rats in the SDTT. No difference was found in food foraging in the competitive food foraging test between SE and EE rats. Male EE rats were more attractive than the SE to the female rats in the mate preference test. IBA-1 expression was found to be decreased in the hypothalamus of EE rats compared to SE group. Infusion of a microglia inhibitor reduced percentage of forward in SE rats in the SDTT. Infusion of DNA methyltransferase inhibitor prevented the development of subordinate status in EE rats and restored the expression of IBA-1 in the hypothalamus. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that early EE did not lead to reduced social hierarchy in the male rat. However, EE caused a reduction in the percentage of forward in the SDTT, which might be associated with reduced number of microglia in the hypothalamus.

BACKGROUND: Many exopolysaccharides from the endophytes in medicinal plants possess various potential bioactivities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The endophytic fungus JY25 was isolated from the leave of the Chinese medicinal plant Gynostemma pentaphylla and identified as Chaetomium sp. by its phylogenetic and physiological analysis. One exopolysaccharide (EPS) fraction was isolated from the fermentation broth by ethanol precipitation and purified by gel filtration chromatography on Sepharose CL-6B. The molecular characteristics were examined by GC-MS, FT-IR, and multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS). RESULTS: The monosaccharide composition analysis indicated that the purified EPS was mainly composed of glucose, mannose, arabinose, and galactose with the molecular ratio of 78.29: 8.99: 8.64: 4.08. FT-IR spectral analysis of the purified EPS revealed prominent characteristic groups, such as carbonyl bond, pyranose ring, and so on. The weight-average molar mass and the polydispersity ratio of the EPS were revealed to be 1.961×104 g/mol and 1.838, respectively. Furthermore, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the degradation temperature of the purified EPS was 305° C. The purified EPS from the endophytic fungus Chaetomium sp. displayed antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that the EPS could be used as a healthful food and material source in pharmaceutical industries. BACKGROUND: Medusozoans utilize explosively discharging penetrant nematocysts to inject venom into prey. These venoms are composed of highly complex proteins and peptides with extensive bioactivities, as observed in vitro. Diverse enzymatic toxins have been putatively identified in the venom of jellyfish, Nemopilema nomurai and Cyanea nozakii, through examination of their proteomes and transcriptomes. However, functional examination of putative enzymatic components identified in proteomic approaches to elucidate potential bioactivities is critically needed. METHODS: In this study, enzymatic toxins were functionally identified using a combined approach consisting of in gel zymography and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The potential roles of metalloproteinases and lipases in hemolytic activity were explored using specific inhibitors. RESULTS: Zymography indicated that nematocyst venom possessed protease-, lipase- and hyaluronidase-class activities. Further, proteomic approaches using LC-MS/MS indicated sequence homology of proteolytic bands observed in zymography to extant zinc metalloproteinase-disintegrins and astacin metalloproteinases. Moreover, pre-incubation of the metalloproteinase inhibitor batimastat with N. nomurai nematocyst venom resulted in an approximate 62% reduction of hemolysis compared to venom exposed sheep erythrocytes, suggesting that metalloproteinases contribute to hemolytic activity. Additionally, species within the molecular mass range of 14-18 kDa exhibited both egg yolk and erythrocyte lytic activities in gel overlay assays. CONCLUSION: For the first time, our findings demonstrate the contribution of jellyfish venom metalloproteinase and suggest the involvement of lipase species to hemolytic activity. Investigations of this relationship will facilitate a better understanding of the constituents and toxicity of jellyfish venom.

Jellyfish envenomations are emerging as an important public health concern occurred worldwide. In China, the situation is getting worse with numerous people stung by jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai (N. nomurai) and Cyanea nozakii (C. nozakii) in the summer. However, the proteinaceous mixtures in nematocysts responsible for the symptoms of jellyfish stings were scarcely characterized and understood in view of enzymatic constituents and toxicity. In the present study, enzymatic properties of jellyfish N. nomurai and C. nozakii nematocyst venom were analyzed biochemically and kinetically. The current data revealed that N. nomurai and C. nozakii nematocyst venom exhibited various enzymatic activities, of which metalloproteinases activity and PLA2s-like activity were predominant. Moreover, the catalytic activities of metalloproteinases and PLA2s-like were dependent on different physiochemical conditions such as temperature, pH and divalent ions. Kinetic profiling revealed their catalytic behaviors fitted the Michaelis-Menten equation under specific conditions. Findings suggested jellyfish nematocyst venom possessed diverse enzymatic constituents, which may underlie the extensively characterized bioactivities of jellyfish venom and human envenomations. Hence, our study will contribute to understanding the enzymatic constituents and toxicity of jellyfish nematocyst venom and may afford potential therapeutic targets for developing drugs for jellyfish stings.

Panax notoginseng, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, has been cultivated and domesticated for approximately 400 years, mainly in Yunnan and Guangxi, two provinces in southwest China. This species was named according to cultivated rather than wild individuals, and no wild populations had been found until now. The genetic resources available on farms are important for both breeding practices and resource conservation. In the present study, the recently developed technology RADseq, which is based on next-generation sequencing, was used to analyze the genetic variation and differentiation of P. notoginseng. The nucleotide diversity and heterozygosity results indicated that P. notoginseng had low genetic diversity at both the species and population levels. Almost no genetic differentiation has been detected, and all populations were genetically similar due to strong gene flow and insufficient splitting time. Although the genetic diversity of P. notoginseng was low at both species and population levels, several traditional plantations had relatively high genetic diversity, as revealed by the He and π values and by the private allele numbers. These valuable genetic resources should be protected as soon as possible to facilitate future breeding projects. The possible geographical origin of Sanqi domestication was discussed based on the results of the genetic diversity analysis.

This study was conducted to assess the abundance, incidence and diversity of the culturable phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) community during different organic wastes composting. The key PSB affecting different phosphorus (P) fractions and their relationship with environmental variables were analyzed by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that there were distinct differences in amounts, incidence and community composition of PSB for the composts from different sources. Regression analysis demonstrated significant corrections between the density and incidence of PSB and pH, temperature, OM and DOC/DON. Most of culturable PSB showed high percentages of identity with the phyla of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. There were thirteen key PSB correlated closely (p<0.05) with different P fractions variation. Conclusively, we suggested a process control method to regulate the distribution of P fractions during composting based on the relationship between the key PSB and P fractions as well as environmental parameters.

Two new 3,4-seco-cycloartane triterpenes, named sootepins H (1) and I (2), were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves and twigs of Gardenia sootepensis. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D- and 2D-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, as well as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), infrared (IR), and ultra violet (UV).

Jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris, a synonym of Nemopilema nomurai, which has often bloomed in the China Sea in recent years, is becoming an increasing threat to human health and life as a result of its strong toxicity. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people were stung, especially in the high season, and the victims suffered itch, edema, myalgia, dyspnea, hypotension, shock and even death. Here, we present the in-depth analysis of the in vivo toxicity of the venom from the jellyfish S. meleagris by using both an acute toxicological approach and pathological analyses. The venom showed an LD50 of approximately 2.92 µg/g body weight in mice following an intravenous injection and caused renal glomerular swelling, renal vesicle stricture, renal tubules dilatation, hepatic blood sinusoid dilatation, pulmonary edema and malignant pleural effusion. The pathological sections analysis showed that the kidney and liver were significantly damaged, but the heart, spleen and stomach had no observed changes. Additionally, the hemanalysis showed an increase of white blood cells (WBC), middle cells (Mid), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urine nitrogen (BUN) and uric acid (UA) in the blood. Moreover, the mice also displayed convulsions, mouth bleeding, piloerection, dyspnea and death after the injection of the venom. In conclusion, this venom has a strong toxicity to the kidney of the mice and the acute renal failure might be one of the most important factors for the death after a severe sting. Hopefully, the present study will provide a significant reference for the treatment of stings by the jellyfish S. meleagris in the future.
