RESUMEN

Uranium extraction from radioactive nuclear waste is vital for sustainable energy supply and ecological security. Herein, a polyethyleneimine-chitosan composite microspheres n-PEI/ECH-CTS (n = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) were synthetized for efficient and selective uranium adsorption. The prepared chitosan microspheres with uniform size, uniform dispersion and good mechanical strength combine cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. The 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of 380.65 mg g-1 within only 4 h due to high nitrogen content of 6.57 mol kg-1. The DFT calculations confirms that the optimal coordination mode of UO22+ and 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS is one UO22+ chelated with two -NH2 from two adsorption units, respectively. Adsorption efficiency of U(VI) from simulated nuclear wastewater achieves to 100%, and the Kd value is up to 1.1 × 104 mL g-1, which is 1.7 × 104-6.1 × 104 times that of coexisting ions. The CU(VI) reduces in simulated wastewater from 10.98 mg L-1 to 1 µg L-1, which is well below the US Environmental Protection Agency uranium limits for drinking water (30 µg L-1). Besides, 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS still maintains above 95% adsorption efficiency after seven cycles. In short, the 0.4-PEI/ECH-CTS microspheres integrate high performance, practicality and cost-effectiveness, which has great advantages in practical industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: The present study made use of a network pharmacological approach to evaluate the mechanisms and potential targets of the active ingredients of Epimedium for alleviating mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and treating Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: The active ingredients of Epimedium were acquired from the Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology database, and potential targets were predicted using the TCMSP target module, SwissTargetPrediction, and PharmMapper database. Target proteins correlating with MCI and AD were downloaded from the GeneCards, DisGeNet, and OMIM databases. The common targets of Epimedium, MCI, and AD were identified using the Jvenn online tool, and a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using the String database and Cytoscape. Finally, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of the common targets was performed using DAVID, and molecular docking between active ingredients and target genes was modeled using AutoDock Vina. RESULTS: A total of 20 active ingredients were analyzed, and 337 compound-related targets were identified for Epimedium. Out of 236 proteins associated with MCI and AD, 54 overlapped with the targets of Epimedium. The top 30 interacting proteins in this set were ranked by topological analysis. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis suggested that the common targets participated in diverse biological processes and pathways, including cell proliferation and apoptosis, inflammatory response, signal transduction, and protein phosphorylation through cancer pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, sphingolipid signaling pathway, FoxO signaling pathway, and TNF signaling pathway. Molecular docking analysis suggested that the 20 active ingredients could bind to the top 5 protein targets. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides theoretical evidence for in-depth analysis of the mechanisms and molecular targets by which Epimedium protects against MCI, AD, and other neurodegenerative diseases and lays the foundation for pragmatic clinical applications and potential new drug development.

LncRNA NEAT1 functions as an oncogene in multiple human cancers. However, its expression and role in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain unclear. Thus, we investigated the expression of NEAT1 in synovial tissues and FLSs in RA, to determine its role in the development of RA. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the expression of NEAT1. FLS proliferation was evaluated using cell proliferation assays. Flow cytometry was used to analyze cell cycle progression and apoptosis in FLSs. Binding between NEAT1 and miR-410-3p was demonstrated by dual-luciferase assays. We found that NEAT1 was upregulated in synovial tissues and FLSs in RA. Upregulation of NEAT1 promoted cell proliferation, induced S-to G2/M phase transition, and suppressed apoptosis in RA FLSs. NEAT1 directly bound to and negatively modulated miR-410-3p expression, while positively regulating YinYang 1(YY1; a miR-410-3p target). Inhibiting miR-410-3p and upregulating YY1 partially restored the inhibitory role in cell viability induced by the depletion of NEAT1 in RA FLSs. Besides pro-proliferative and anti-apoptotic roles, upregulation of NEAT1 promoted migration, invasion, and inflammatory cytokines secretion in RA FLSs. Taken together, our results suggest that the NEAT1 may serve as a novel diagnostic and therapeutic target for patients with RA.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of acupuncture for non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) through systematic review of published randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Studies were identified in electronic databases from their inception to February 2018, and were grouped according to the control interventions. The outcomes of interest were pain intensity and disability. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Cochrane risk-of-bias criteria and the Standards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) checklist. The review was reported according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. RESULTS: 25 trials (n=7587 participants) were identified and included in a meta-analysis. The results showed that acupuncture was more effective at inducing pain relief than: no treatment (standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.69, 95% CI -0.99 to -0.38); sham acupuncture in the immediate term (SMD -0.33, 95% CI -0.49 to -0.18), short term (SMD -0.47, 95% CI -0.77 to -0.17), and intermediate term (SMD -0.17, 95% CI -0.28 to -0.05); and usual care in the short term (SMD -1.07, 95% CI -1.81 to -0.33) and intermediate term (SMD -0.43, 95% CI -0.77 to -0.10). Also, adjunctive acupuncture with usual care was more effective than usual care alone at all time points studied. With regard to functional improvement, the analysis showed a significant difference between acupuncture and no treatment (SMD -0.94, 95% CI -1.57 to -0.30), whereas the other control therapies could not be assessed. CONCLUSION: We draw a cautious conclusion that acupuncture appears to be effective for NSLBP and that acupuncture may be an important supplement to usual care in the management of NSLBP.

In our previous study, miR-410-3p had been confirmed to regulate inflammatory cytokine release in rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA FLSs). However, other biological functions of miR-410-3p in RA FLSs still remain unexplored. In the present study, we focused on the effect of miR-410-3p on proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle of RA FLSs, and explored the potential underlying mechanism. miR-410-3p mRNA levels in the synovium and FLSs of patients with RA and of healthy controls were quantitated by RT-qPCR. The levels of miR-410-3p were reduced in both synovium and FLSs from patients with RA. Next, we focused on the roles of miR-410-3p in cell viability, apoptosis, and cell cycle, by transfecting miR-410-3p mimics and inhibitor into RA FLSs, and conducting CCK-8 assay, EdU staining and flow cytometry. Results showed that miR-410-3p up-regulation suppressed proliferation, promoted apoptosis and G1-S phase transition while miR-410-3p down-regulation had opposite effects. YY1 was verified as a direct target gene of miR-410-3p through the luciferase reporter system; YY1 up-regulation was able to rescue the effects of miR-410-3p in RA FLSs. Taken together, our current findings might provide a potential therapeutic target for RA.

Soil salinization is a major cause of land degradation and hinders the effective utilization of agricultural land resources. Leymus chinensis (L. chinensis), as a dominant species with wide ecological amplitude, plays an important role in improving saline-alkali grasslands and indicating the degree of salinization. In this study, a sand culture experiment (nitrogen and phosphorus addition accompanied by saline-alkali stress) was designed to investigate the impact of different saline-alkali environments on the ecological stoichiometric homeostasis of L. chinensis with the aim of elucidating the saline-alkali resistance mechanisms. The results showed that the homeostasis indexes of N, P and N:P in the aboveground part of L. chinensis were generally higher than those in the belowground part under different saline-alkali conditions. Furthermore, the homeostasis index of N (HN) was greater than that of P (HP) in the aboveground part, whereas HN was less than HP in the belowground part. This indicates that the growth aboveground of L. chinensis was mainly dependent on N, whereas the growth belowground was mainly affected by P. The homeostasis index of the aboveground organs was 4.45-12.93 under pH 7-9.8. In contrast, HN and HN:P(+N) in the belowground organs did not conform to a homeostasis model when pH > 9.1. Consequently, when L. chinensis is subjected to high saline-alkali stress, the homeostasis reaction of the roots is more sensitive than that of the aboveground organs.

The grasslands of Western Jilin Province in China have experienced severe degradation during the last 50 years. Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) and support vector machines (SVM) were used to predict the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of Leymus chinensis (L. chinensis) and explore the degree of grassland degradation using the matter-element extension model. Both RBFNN and SVM demonstrated good prediction accuracy. The results indicated that there was severe degradation, as samples were mainly concentrated in the 3rd and 4th levels. The growth of L. chinensis was shown to be limited by either nitrogen, phosphorus, or both during different stages of degradation. The soil chemistry changed noticeably as degradation aggravated, which represents a destabilization of L. chinensis community homeostasis. Soil salinization aggravates soil nutrient loss and decreases the bioavailability of soil nutrients. This, along with the destabilization of C/N, C/P and N/P ratios, weakens the photosynthetic ability and productivity of L. chinensis. This conclusion was supported by observations that L. chinensis is gradually being replaced by a Chloris virgata, Puccinellia tenuiflora and Suaeda acuminate mixed community.

OBJECTIVE: To study gender differences in different measures of iron status in infants aged 4 and 6 months old. METHODS: Term delivery pregnant women with normal iron status were recruit with informed consent. Infants with normal birth weight were selected and exclusive breastfeeding were required. All infants were randomly assigned into one control group and one iron supplement group at 4 months old. The latter group were given a daily dose of iron supplement corresponding to 1 mg/kg body weight of elemental iron from 4 to 6 month. At 4 and 6 months old, vein blood were sampled to analyze hemoglobin (Hb), mean cell volume (MCV), serum ferritin (SF), and soluble transferrin receptors (sTfR) and the growth indices were measured. RESULTS: Data of infants at 4 months old (n = 178) and 6 months old (n = 85) were collected. At 4 months old, male infants had significantly lower MCV and SF and higher sTfR, male infants had lower Hb but with no significant difference. 6 months old, the trends of differences stayed the same as at 4 months old, and MCV remained significant. CONCLUSION: Male infants may have a higher risk to develop iron deficiency. Male infants may have a higher risk to develop iron deficiency. There needs to be respective diagnostical cut-off values and dietary iron requirement for male and female infants. At the same time, correct feeding is necessary.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects to iron status who were given preventive iron supplements for two months from when they were breast-fed to four-month-old. METHODS: A total of 123 infants in four-month-old age who were breast-fed were randomly divided into iron supplementation group (63 cases) and control group (60 cases), iron supplementation group was supplied with low-dose iron (1 mg×kg⁻¹×d⁻¹) for two months with no intervention for control group. Blood samples were collected to test C reactive protein and iron status indicators in six-month-old age group infants, and the growth indices were measured and compared on the gender difference of iron status at and 6 months. RESULTS: After 2 months of low-dose iron supplementation, the hemoglobin of iron supplementation group (26 cases) increased about 5.5 g/L while the control group (34 cases) increases about 0.0 g/L (median), 95% confidence intervals were -7.0 - 13.0 g/L and -9.0 - 15.0 g/L, respectively. The hemoglobin increase of iron supplementation group was higher than the control group, the difference was statistically significant (u = -2.326, P < 0.05). The other iron nutritional status and the growth did not show any significant difference between iron supplementation group and control group (P > 0.05). At age 6 month, the MCV of the boys were (75.89 ± 3.34) fl, while the girls were (77.20 ± 3.17) fl. The boys had lower values of MCV than the girls, and the gender difference was statistically significant (t = 4.73, P < 0.05). The other iron nutritional status did not show any significant gender difference (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Low-dose iron supplementation of breast-fed infants at 4-month-old can increase the hemoglobin level when they were 6-month-old, and had no measurable side effect on growth.
