RESUMEN

Superconductivity is caused by electron pairs that are canonically isotropic, whereas some exotic superconductors are known to exhibit non-trivial anisotropy stemming from unconventional pairings. However, superconductors with hexagonal symmetry, the highest rotational symmetry allowed in crystals, exceptionally have strong constraint that is called emergent rotational symmetry (ERS): anisotropic properties should be very weak especially near the critical temperature Tc even for unconventional pairings such as d-wave states. Here, we investigate superconducting anisotropy of the recently-found hexagonal Kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5, which is known to exhibit various intriguing phenomena originating from its undistorted Kagome lattice formed by vanadium atoms. Based on calorimetry performed under accurate two-axis field-direction control, we discover a combination of six- and two-fold anisotropies in the in-plane upper critical field. Both anisotropies, robust up to very close to Tc, are beyond predictions of standard theories. We infer that this clear ERS violation with nematicity is best explained by multi-component nematic superconducting order parameter in CsV3Sb5 intertwined with symmetry breakings caused by the underlying charge-density-wave order.

This study delved into the efficacy of sludge digestion and the mechanisms involved in sludge destruction during the implementation of forward osmosis process for sludge thickening and digestion (FO-MSTD). Utilizing a lab-scale FO membrane reactor for the thickening and digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS), the investigation explored the effects of sludge thickening and digestion in FO-MSTD processes using draw solutions of varying concentrations. The findings underscored the significance of hydraulic retention time (HRT) as a pivotal parameter influencing the swift thickening or profound digestion of sludge. Consequently, tailoring the HRT to specific processing objectives emerged as a key strategy for achieving desired treatment outcomes. In the investigation, the use of a 1 M NaCl draw solution in the FO-MSTD process showcased enhanced thickening and digestion capabilities. This specific setup raised the concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) to over 30 g/L and achieved a 42.7% digestion efficiency of mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) within an operational timeframe of 18 days. Furthermore, the research unveiled distinct stages in the sludge digestion process of the FO-MSTD system, characterized by fully aerobic digestion and aerobic-local anaerobic co-existing digestion. In the fully aerobic digestion stage, the sludge digestion rate exhibited a steady increase, leading to the breakdown of sludge floc structures and the release of a substantial amount of nutrients into the sludge supernatant. The predominant microorganisms during this stage were typical functional microorganisms found in wastewater treatment systems. Transitioning into the aerobic-local anaerobic co-existing digestion stage, both MLSS concentration and MLVSS digestion efficiency continued to rise, accompanied by a decreasing dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. More organic matter was released into the supernatant, and sludge microbial flocs tended to reaggregate. The localized anaerobic environment within the FO-MSTD reactor fostered an increase in the relative abundance of bacteria with nitrogen and phosphorus removal functions, thereby positively impacting the mitigation of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in the sludge supernatant. The results of this research enhance comprehension of the advanced FO-MSTD technology in the treatment of WAS.

In order to meet the demand of municipal wastewater for low-carbon treatment and resource recovery, a novel process of anaerobic acidification membrane bioreactor (AAMBR) assisted with a two-stage forward osmosis (FO) (FO-AAMBR-FO) was developed for simultaneously recovering organic matter and nutrients from municipal wastewater. The results indicated that the first FO process concentrated the municipal wastewater to one tenth of the initial volume. The corresponding chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and total phosphorus (TP) concentration reached up to 2800, 200 and 33 mg/L, respectively. Subsequently, the AAMBR was operated at pH value of 10 for treating the concentration of municipal wastewater, in which the organic matter was successfully converted to acetic acid and propionic acid with a total volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration of 1787 mg COD/L and a VFAs production efficiency of 62.36 % during 47 days of stable operation. After that, the NH4+-N and TP concentration in the effluent of the AAMBR were further concentrated to 175 and 36.7 mg/L, respectively, by the second FO process. The struvite was successfully recovered with NH4+-N and TP recovery rate of 94.53 % and 98.59 %, respectively. Correspondingly, the VFAs, NH4+-N and TP concentrations in the residual solution were 2905 mg COD/L, 11.8 and 7.92 mg/L, respectively, which could be used as the raw material for the synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Results reported here demonstrated that the FO-AAMBR-FO is a promising wastewater treatment technology for simultaneous recovery of organic matter (in form of VFAs) and nutrients (in form of struvite).

Four new monoterpene indole alkaloids (1-4) together with twelve known alkaloids (5-16) were isolated from the roots of Alstonia rupestris. Compound 1 was the first example of C2-symmetric heteroyohimbine-type indole alkaloid homodimer obtained from natural plant resource. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by comparison of its calculated and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. All compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities by measuring their NO inhibitory effects in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Compound 2 showed strong NO inhibition with IC50 value of 4.2 ± 1.3 µM. Moreover, compound 2 could decrease the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-ß1).

Obesity has become one of the major threats to human health across the globe. The rhizomes of Polygonatum sibiricum have shown promising anti-obesity effect. However, the metabolic and genetic basis mediating this beneficial effect are not fully resolved. It is well known that older rhizomes of P. sibiricum exert stronger pharmacological effects. Here, we performed high-resolution metabolome profiling of P. sibiricum rhizomes at different growth stages, and identified that three candidate anti-obesity metabolites, namely phloretin, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, accumulated more in adult rhizomes. To elucidate the genetic basis controlling the accumulation of these metabolites, we performed transcriptome profiling of rhizomes from juvenile and adult P. sibiricum. Through third-generation long-read sequencing, we built a high-quality transcript pool of P. sibiricum, and resolved the genetic pathways involved in the biosynthesis and metabolism of phloretin, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed altered expression of the genetic pathways in adult rhizomes, which likely lead to higher accumulation of these candidate metabolites. Overall, we identified several metabolic and genetic signatures related to the anti-obesity effect of P. sibiricum. The metabolic and transcriptional datasets generated in this work could also facilitate future research on other beneficial effects of this medicinal plant.

Heavy metals (HMs), like vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) toxicity due to anthropogenic, impair plant growth and yield, which is a challenging issue for agricultural production. Melatonin (ME) is a stress mitigating molecule, which alleviates HM-induced phytotoxicity, but the possible underlying mechanism of ME functions under HMs' phytotoxicity is still unclear. Current study uncovered key mechanisms for ME-mediated HMs-stress tolerance in pepper. HMs toxicity greatly reduced growth by impeding leaf photosynthesis, root architecture system, and nutrient uptake. Conversely, ME supplementation markedly enhanced growth attributes, mineral nutrient uptake, photosynthetic efficiency, as measured by chlorophyll content, gas exchange elements, chlorophyll photosynthesis genes' upregulation, and reduced HMs accumulation. ME treatment showed a significant decline in the leaf/root V, Cr, Ni, and Cd concentration which was about 38.1/33.2%, 38.5/25.9%, 34.8/24.9%, and 26.6/25.1%, respectively, when compared with respective HM treatment. Furthermore, ME remarkably reduced the ROS (reactive oxygen species) accumulation, and reinstated the integrity of cellular membrane via activating antioxidant enzymes (SOD, superoxide dismutase; CAT, catalase; APX, ascorbate peroxidase; GR, glutathione reductase; POD, peroxidase; GST, glutathione S-transferase; DHAR, dehydroascorbate reductase; MDHAR, monodehydroascorbate reductase) and as well as regulating ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. Importantly, oxidative damage showed efficient alleviations through upregulating the genes related to key defense such as SOD, CAT, POD, GR, GST, APX, GPX, DHAR, and MDHAR; along with the genes related to ME biosynthesis. ME supplementation also enhanced the level of proline and secondary metabolites, and their encoding genes expression, which may control excessive H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) production. Finally, ME supplementation enhanced the HM stress tolerance of pepper seedlings.

Eight well-known herbals in Zhejiang Province, Zhebawei, are commonly used as traditional Chinese herbal medicines owing to their rich active ingredients. However, the unavoidable use of pesticides during agricultural production has led to pesticide residue problems in these herbs. In this study, a simple, rapid, and accurate method was established to determine 22 triazole pesticide residues in Zhebawei. An improved QuEChERS method was used for sample pretreatment, and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae was used as a representative sample. The sample was extracted with acetonitrile to eliminate some polar and nonpolar compounds, pigments, and other impurities, and the purification effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), amino-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH2), carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH), crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVPP), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), 3-(N,N-diethylamino)-propyltrimethoxysilane (PSA), octadecyl (C18), and graphitized carbon black (GCB) were compared. MWCNTs-COOH and C18 were selected as the purification adsorbents, and their dosages were systematically optimized. The combination of 10 mg of MWCNTs-COOH and 20 mg of C18 was eventually selected as the purification adsorbents. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for analysis, and box graphs were plotted to present the dispersion of each group of recoveries, thus enabling the identification of the data outliers, dispersion distribution, and data symmetry. The established method was systematically verified and showed good linearity over the concentration range of 1-200 µg/L (except for bromuconazole, epoxiconazole, and etaconazole) with correlation coefficients >0.99. The average recoveries of the 22 pesticides at spiked levels of 10, 20, 100, and 200 µg/kg were in the range of 77.0%-115% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) <9.4%. The limits of detection and quantification were 1-2.5 µg/kg and 10-20 µg/kg, respectively. The applicability of the developed method to other herbals was investigated at 100 µg/kg, and the average recoveries of the target pesticides in different matrices ranged from 76.4% to 123% with RSDs <12.2%. Finally, the method established was used to detect triazole pesticide residues in 30 actual Zhebawei samples. The results showed that triazole pesticides were present in Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii and Dendranthema Morifolium. Difenoconazole was detected in Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii at contents ranging from 41.4 µg/kg to 110 µg/kg, while difenoconazole, myclobutanil, triadimenol and propiconazole were detected in Dendranthema Morifolium at contents ranging from 16.1 µg/kg to 250 µg/kg. The established method can meet the requirements for the accurate quantitative analysis of triazole fungicides in Zhebawei.

Challenges were raised to established analytical method for monitoring water soluble neonicotinoid insecticide (NEOs) residues in tea infusion. Phenolic-based non-ionic deep eutectic solvent (NIDES) composed by a mixture of DL-menthol and thymol (molar ratio of 1:3) was applied to achieve the determination of selected NEOs. Factors influenced extraction efficiency have been evaluated and molecular dynamics approach was conducted aming to provide a new insight to explain its extraction mechanism. It is found that Boltzmann averaged solvation energy of NEOs was negatively correlated with extraction efficiency. The method validation results indicated good linearities (R2 ≥ 0.99), sensitive LOQs (0.05 µg L-1), high precisions (RSD < 11%) and satisfactory recoveries (57.7%∼98%) at 0.05 µg L-1 âˆ¼ 100 µg L-1. The intake risk of NEOs in tea infusion samples were acceptable which residues in range of 0.1 µg L-1 âˆ¼ 3.5 µg L-1 for thiamethoxam imidacloprid and thiacloprid. This method showed advantages of rapid, green, and easy operation.

Itea ilicifolia Oliv is a folk medicine with antioxidant potential. In this study, the fingerprints of 14 batches of I. ilicifolia were established by HPLC with 17 common peaks. The similarities evaluated by Similarity Evaluation System for Chromatographic Fingerprint of Chinese Materia (version 2012) were >0.89. Ten compounds were identified with definite structures by comparing the retention time and characteristic UV spectral pattern with those of reference substances. The antioxidant capacities of 14 batches of I. ilicifolia were evaluated based on O2 ·- , DPPH and ABTS·+ radical scavenging assays in combination with ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Via multivariate statistical analyses of gray relation analysis, bivariate correlation analysis and partial least squares regression analysis, a study on the spectrum-effect relationship was then performed to screen eight peaks as the antioxidant Q-markers of I. ilicifolia. The contents of representative antioxidant Q-markers (isoorientin, orientin, vitexin, isovitexin and iteafuranal A) in samples were accurately determined to be 0.054-0.118%, 0.034-0.080%, 0.018-0.055%, 0.031-0.091% and 0.033-0.140%, respectively. The qualitative and quantitative analytical method based on Q-markers helps to control the antioxidant quality of I. ilicifolia, which will lay the foundation to promote the rational utilization of I. ilicifolia in curing diseases related to oxidative stress.

The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Ardisia brevicaulis Diels 1900, one traditionally medicinal plant usually used in southern China, was first assembled and reported in this study. The genome size is 156,742 bp (37.1% GC content), containing a large single-copy (LSC) region of 86,329 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,417 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 25,998 bp. 134 genes (89 protein-coding, 37 tRNA, and 8 rRNA genes) are annotated in the whole cp genome, including 115 unique genes (81 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and 4 rRNA genes). Phylogenetic analysis showed that A. brevicaulis is closely related to A. primulifolia and A. villosa, indicating their close phylogenetic relationship. The cp genome of A. brevicaulis could provide valuable genomic information for the phylogeny, molecular identification and discovery of new medicinal plant resources in Ardisia Swartz 1788.

A hydroponic method was conducted to test whether Spathiphyllum kochii is tolerant to multiple HMs as well as to evaluate whether sodium silicate promotes plant growth and alleviates HM stress mainly by assessing biomass, HM accumulation characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activities (AEAs). Three soil extractions from an uncontaminated soil, a comparable lightly HM-contaminated soil (EnSE), and a comparable heavily HM-contaminated soil (ExSE) with or without 1 mM sodium silicate supplementation were used. S. kochii showed no obvious symptoms when cultured in EnSE and ExSE, indicating that it was a multi-HM-tolerant species. The biomass and photosynthesis followed the order: UnSE > EnSE > ExSE, but the opposite order was found for HM concentration, AEAs, and malondialdehyde content. Silicate had no effects on the growth and HM bioaccumulation characteristics of S. kochii cultured in UnSE but exhibited a novel role in decreasing HM uptake by 13.61-41.51% in EnSE and ExSE, respectively, corresponding upregulated AEAs, and reduced malondialdehyde contents, resulting in increased biomass and alleviating HM stress. The activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were upregulated by an increase in soil extraction HM concentration and further upregulated by silicate supplementation, indicating that they were important mechanisms alleviating HM stress in S. kochii.


Phytoremediation is an economical and environmentally friendly technology for the alleviation of heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soil. Improving bioremediation efficiency is crucial for this kind of technology. Many studies have shown that silicon plays a novel role in plant growth and adversity responses, but studies in the field of phytoremediation are limited. In addition, phytoremediation plant species are usually hyperaccumulators or may be tolerant crops, commercial crops, or wild species from mining areas, and the use of landscape species in phytoremediation is limited. This is the first report on the effects of silicate on the multi-HM bioaccumulation characteristics of a garden plant (Spathiphyllum kochii) cultured in uncontaminated and HM-contaminated soil extractions. This study will broaden phytoremediation species screening and enrich our understanding of the mechanisms by which Si supports the bioremediation of HM-contaminated environments.HIGHLIGHTSS. kochii was a multi-heavy metal-tolerant species.Silicon played a novel role in reducing heavy metal concentrations by 14­40% and 14­42% in shoots and roots, respectively.Silicon upregulated antioxidant enzyme activities to alleviate heavy metal stress in plants.

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is one of the crucial inflammatory cytokines as an early indicator of multiple diseases. A fast, simple, sensitive and reliable IFN-γ detection method is valuable for early diagnosis and monitoring of treatment. In this work, we creatively developed an electrochemical aptasensor based on the topological material Bi2Se3 for sensitive IFN-γ quantification. The high-quality Bi2Se3 sheet was directly exfoliated from a single crystal, which immobilized the synthesized IFN-γ aptamer. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical signal revealed a wide linear relation along with the logarithmic concentration of IFN-γ from 1.0 pg mL-1 to 100.0 ng mL-1, with the limit of detection as low as 0.5 pg mL-1. The topological material Bi2Se3 with Dirac surface states improved the electrochemical signal/noise ratio and thus the sensitivity of the sensors. Furthermore, this electrochemical aptasensor exhibited excellent specificity and stability, which could be attributed to the large-scale smooth surface of the Bi2Se3 sheet with few defects decreasing the non-specific absorption. The developed biosensor has the same good performance as the ELISA method for detecting the real serum samples. Our work demonstrates that the developed electrochemical aptasensors based on topological materials have great potential in the field of clinical determination.

The ever-increasing industrial activities over the decades have generated high toxic metals such as chromium (Cr) that hampers plant growth and development. To counter Cr-toxicity, plants have evolved complex defensive systems including hormonal crosstalk with various signaling pathways. 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBR) lowers oxidative stress and alleviates Cr(VI)-toxicity in plants. In this study, the concealed BR-mediated influences on Cr(VI)-stress tolerance were explored by transcriptome analysis in the Capsicum annuum. Results revealed a linkage between plant development under Cr(VI)-stress and the mitigating effect of 24-epibrassinolide and brassinazole. Growth inhibition, chlorophyll degradation, and a significant rise of malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed after 40 mg/L Cr(VI) treatment in Brz supplemented seedlings, whereas 24-EBR supplemented seedlings exhibited commendatory effect. Comparative transcriptome analysis showed that the expression levels of 6687 genes changed (3846 up-regulated and 2841 downregulated) under Cr(VI)-stress with Brz supplementation. Whereas the expression levels of only 1872 genes changed under Cr(VI)-stress with 24-EBR supplementation (1223 up-regulated and 649 downregulated). The functional categories of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by gene ontology (GO) revealed that drug transport, defense responses, and drug catabolic process were the considerable enrichments between 24-EBR and Brz supplemented seedlings under Cr(VI)-stress. Furthermore, auxin signaling, glutathione metabolism, ABC transporters, MAPK pathway, and 36 heavy metal-related genes were significantly differentially expressed components between Cr(VI)-stress, 24-EBR, and Brz supplemented seedlings. Overall, our data demonstrate that employing 24-EBR can commendably act as a growth stimulant in plants subjected to Cr(VI)-stress by modulating the physiological and defense regulatory system.

Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an essential role in tumor progression and reoccurrence and drug resistance. Multiple signaling pathways have been revealed to be critically participated in CSC development and maintenance. Emerging evidence indicates that numerous chemopreventive compounds, also known as nutraceuticals, could eliminate CSCs in part via regulating several signaling pathways. Therefore, in this review, we will describe the some natural chemopreventive agents that target CSCs in a variety of human malignancies, including soy isoflavone, curcumin, resveratrol, tea polyphenols, sulforaphane, quercetin, indole-3-carbinol, 3,3'-diindolylmethane, withaferin A, apigenin, etc. Moreover, we discuss that eliminating CSCs by nutraceuticals might be a promising strategy for treating human cancer via overcoming drug resistance and reducing tumor reoccurrence.

RESUMEN

Four new monoterpene indole alkaloids (1-4) together with six known alkaloids (5-10) were isolated from the roots of Bousigonia mekongensis. Compounds 3 and 4 were the first examples of condylocarpan-adenine type alkaloids obtained from natural plant resource. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data. All compounds were evaluated for their inhibiting glucose-induced mesanginal cell proliferation and protecting high glucose-evoked podocyte injury activities. (-)-demethoxycarbonyldihydrogambirtannine (5) can significantly antagonize glucose-induced podocyte injury with EC50 value of 6.5 ± 1.2 µM.

Precious metal catalysts with superior low-temperature activity and excellent thermal stability are highly needed in environmental catalysis field. In this work, a novel two-step incipient wetness impregnation (T-IWI) method was developed for the fabrication of a unique and highly stable CeO2/Al2O3 support (CA-T). Pd anchored on CA-T exhibited a much higher low-temperature catalytic activity and superior thermal stability in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) oxidations, compared to Pd anchored on conventional CeO2/Al2O3 (CA), which was prepared by a one-step IWI method. After aging treatment at 800 °C, the CO oxidation rate on Pd/CA-T (1.69 mmol/(gPd s)) at 120 °C was 4.1 and 84.5 times of those on Pd/CA (0.41 mmol/(gPd s)) and Pd/Al2O3 (0.02 mmol/(gPd s)), respectively. It was revealed that the CA-T support with well-controlled small CeO2 particles (ca. 12 nm) possessed abundant defects for Pd anchoring, which created rich Pd-CeO2 interfaces with strengthened interaction between Pd and CeO2 where oxygen could be efficiently activated. This resulted in the significantly improved oxidation activity and thermal stability of Pd/CA-T catalysts. The T-IWI method developed herein can be applied as a universal approach to prepare highly stable metal oxide-alumina-based supports, which have broad application in environmental catalyst design, especially for automobile exhaust aftertreatment.

A simple, accurate, and high-throughput analytical method was developed to detect 123 pesticide residues in Chinese medicinal herb Paeoniae Radix Alba (PRA) by introducing nano-MgO as a highly efficient purification material based on quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) design concept. Various PRA samples were extracted using 8 mL 0.5% acetic acid-acetonitrile solution and purified by a dispersive solid-phase extraction method with 30 mg nano-MgO, 40 mg primary secondary amine (PSA), and 40 mg octadecylsilane (C18) as the cleanup adsorbents, followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). 70.7% of pesticides showed a weak matrix effect after the purification process, indicating that this method can give the precise quantitative analysis of trace pesticides residue. The method was systematically validated under optimal conditions in five different kinds of PRA samples; good linearity was observed in the concentration range of 0.5-250 µg/L or 1-250 µg/L. Pesticide recovery in each sample spiked at concentrations of 20, 50, and 200 µg/kg ranged from 98.0% to 111% and the mean relative standard deviation ranged from 2.72% to 5.70%. Furthermore, the method comparison with the traditional QuEChERS method suggested the feasibility, advantages, and potential application prospect of the present method for the multi-pesticide residue analysis in various PRA samples.

Fritillaria, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is classified into many medicinal species and contains numerous complex components. It is thus difficult to simultaneously detect multiple pesticide residues in different Fritillaria species. An easy, reliable, and widely applicable analytical method based on a modified Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method coupled with LC-MS/MS was developed to solve these problems encountered during pesticide residue analysis in complex Fritillaria matrices. Ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-3 and a primary secondary amine (PSA) were used as efficient purification sorbents by optimization of the QuEChERS process. Systematic method validation was performed for four species of Fritillaria. The matrix effect of pesticides varied among different Fritillaria species, and matrix-matched standard solutions were thus employed for quantitative analysis. The mean recoveries of all pesticides ranged from 88.6% to 95.5%, with mean relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 6% at spiked concentrations of 30, 120, and 240 µg kg-1. The limits of quantification (LOQ) for the developed method were in the range of 30-120 µg kg-1. This method was further used to analyze 47 Fritillaria samples from Zhejiang province, China, and seven pesticides were detected in 22 Fritillaria samples. These results demonstrate that the developed method is suitable for an accurate analysis of multiple pesticide residues in various Fritillaria.

Objective: To study the anti-hypertrophic scar effect of the six-herb Chinese medicine composition (SCMC) ointment on the rabbit ear hypertrophic scar models. Methods: The optimal formulation of SCMC ointment matrix was screened by the orthogonal designs and a series of evaluation tests. The SCMC ointment was prepared through emulsifying method. The rabbit ear hypertrophic scar models were established and used to investigate the anti-hypertrophic scar effect of SCMC ointment. Results: Our results demonstrated that all the quality control indications of the SCMC ointment met the requirements. Anti-hypertrophic scar activity results showed that all the rabbit ear scar tissues appeared different degrees of shrink and fading, and took an unobvious but palpable shift from hard to soft texture with the low, middle and high concentration SCMC ointments treatments in vivo. Additionally, on 21st day the scar area and thickness in different concentrations of SCMC ointment groups were significantly reduced than control group, in a concentration-dependent manner. The immunohistochemical results also indicated that the SCMC ointment had good anti-hypertrophic scar properties and could inhibit hypertrophic scar formation. Conclusion: The SCMC ointment could improve the blood circulation condition of hypertrophic scar tissues. Our research has demonstrated the Chinese medicine composition ointment with good anti-hypertrophic scar properties that could be used to treat hypertrophic scars. Meanwhile, it provides a theoretical basis for further clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Duodenal obstruction is a common clinical scenario that can either be mechanical or a pseudo-obstruction. Clinical management of intestinal obstruction starts from localization and proceeds to histological examination of the stenotic intestine. Systemic factors and dysfunction of distant organs might contribute to the development of intestinal obstruction. Here, we report a unique case of idiopathic mechanical duodenal obstruction, which resolved spontaneously after 3 mo of conservative treatment, but was followed by intestinal pseudo-obstruction. CASE SUMMARY: An 84-year-old woman presented with worsened postprandial vomiting accompanied by prolonged pneumonia. Thorough noninvasive investigations revealed complete circumferential stenosis in the descending duodenum without known cause. Exploratory surgery was postponed due to septic shock and possible pulmonary fungal infection. Conservative treatment for 3 mo for ileus and control of pulmonary infection resolved the intestinal obstruction completely. Unfortunately, 2 wk later, she had regurgitation and postprandial vomiting again, complicated by deteriorating wheezing and dyspnea. Computed tomography revealed a dilated stomach and proximal duodenum without new intestinal stricture or pulmonary infiltration. The patient fully recovered after combined treatment with antireflux agents, enema, prokinetics, and bronchodilators. CONCLUSION: This complicated case highlights the inter-relationship of local and systemic contributions to ileus and gut dysfunction, which requires multidisciplinary treatment.
