RESUMEN

Caffeine consumption inhibits acupuncture analgesic effects by blocking adenosine signaling. However, existing evidence remains controversial. Hence, this study aimed to examine the adenosine A1 receptor (A1R) role in moderate-dose caffeine-induced abolishing effect on acupuncture analgesia using A1R knockout mice (A1R-/-). We assessed the role of A1R in physiological sensory perception and its interaction with caffeine by measuring mechanical and thermal pain thresholds and administering A1R and adenosine 2A receptor antagonists in wild-type (WT) and A1R-/- mice. Formalin- and complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain models were recruited to explore moderate-dose caffeine effect on pain perception and acupuncture analgesia in WT and A1R-/- mice. Moreover, a C-fiber reflex electromyogram in the biceps femoris was conducted to validate the role of A1R in the caffeine-induced blockade of acupuncture analgesia. We found that A1R was dispensable for physiological sensory perception and formalin- and CFA-induced hypersensitivity. However, genetic deletion of A1R impaired the antinociceptive effect of acupuncture in A1R-/- mice under physiological or inflammatory pain conditions. Acute moderate-dose caffeine administration induced mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia under physiological conditions but not in formalin- and CFA-induced inflammatory pain. Moreover, caffeine significantly inhibited electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia in physiological and inflammatory pain in WT mice, comparable to that of A1R antagonists. Conversely, A1R deletion impaired the EA analgesic effect and decreased the caffeine-induced inhibitory effect on EA analgesia in physiological conditions and inflammatory pain. Moderate-dose caffeine administration diminished the EA-induced antinociceptive effect by blocking A1R. Overall, our study suggested that caffeine consumption should be avoided during acupuncture treatment. PERSPECTIVE: Moderate-dose caffeine injection attenuated EA-induced antinociceptive effect in formalin- and CFA-induced inflammatory pain mice models by blocking A1R. This highlights the importance of monitoring caffeine intake during acupuncture treatment.

RESUMEN

This paper explores the unique phenomenon of "other" patient participation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Specifically, it focuses on cases where doctors enlist the help of bystanders to address patient resistance and advance their medical agendas. By analyzing video-recorded practitioner-patient interactions in TCM hospitals, this study uncovers the various roles that third parties can assume during these medical interactions. The research identifies three distinct forms of "other" patient participation: the "other" patient as an illness-free individual providing a contrasting case, the "other" patient as a lay witness to the patient's clinical manifestations, and the "other" patient as a recovered fellow patient demonstrating treatment effectiveness. The findings of this study contribute to existing research on patient resistance and triadic medical interactions, offering insights into the dynamics and implications of third-party involvement in medical consultations.

Calycosin (CA) is a flavonoid extracted from the root of Astragalus membranaceus and has antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and antiapoptosis properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of CA in protecting against pulmonary fibrosis. CA (14 mg/kg) and SB216763 (20 mg/kg) were administrated to bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mice for 3 weeks. The results concluded that CA alleviated the inflammation and collagen deposition in pulmonary fibrosis. In addition, CA reduced MDA level, enhanced SOD and TAC activities, and increased the activity of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. CA also regulated the expressions of apoptosis-related proteins. Moreover, CA enhanced autophagy via upregulating LC3, beclin1, PINK1, and reducing p62. CA also increased expression of LAMP1 and TFEB, and inhibited the release of lysosome enzymes from ruptured lysosomes. These results provide new evidence that CA protects against pulmonary fibrosis through inhibiting oxidative stress and apoptosis. In addition, autophagy abnormality and lysosome dysfunction are restored by CA.

The physicochemical stimulation of acupoints is a widespread treatment strategy for different diseases, such as sciatica. Its efficacy is mainly based on the temporal and spatial modulation of the physicochemical properties of the acupoints. The existing therapies based on the stimulation of acupoints have certain disadvantages. Therefore, in this study, injectable dexamethasone (DXM)- and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles-loaded chitosan/ß-glycerophosphate (CS/GP) thermal crosslinking hydrogels were prepared, thereby improving the performance of embedding materials. The sciatica rat models were established to compare the therapeutic effects of hydrogels and catgut. The DXM or Fe3O4-loaded CS/GP hydrogels were compared in terms of their gelation kinetics, release kinetics, magnetic responsiveness in-vitro, and biocompatibility as well as their analgesic effects on the chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve (CCI) rats in-vivo. The CS/GP/Fe3O4/DXM hydrogel showed comparable gelation kinetics and good magnetic responsiveness in-vitro. This hydrogel could relieve sciatica by reducing the expression levels of inflammatory factors in serum, inhibiting the p38MAPK (p38, mitogen-activated protein kinase) phosphorylation, and decreasing the expression level of the P2X4 receptor (P2X4R) in the spinal dorsal horn. In conclusion, the DXM or Fe3O4-loaded CS/GP hydrogels can be considered as a treatment option for the physiochemical stimulation therapy of acupoints to improve sciatica.

Background: Acupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the world. Despite we have an in-depth understanding of acupuncture in this field over the past years, there is no available literature on bibliometric analysis on the development of acupuncture on PD. This study was designed to explore the global trend in the research of acupuncture on PD in the recent 20 years by the software CiteSpace (5.8.R3) and VOSviewer (1.6.14). Methods: Publications regarding acupuncture therapy for PD from 2000 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to analyze the number of publications, the contribution of countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. Results: A total of 217 studies were extracted from the database. The outputs of the publications in this field showed an upward trend during the past two decades. The country and institutions with the most publications in this field are China, South Korea, and the USA. They were the main contributors to the research. Kyung Hee University and Capital Medical University were the two most productive organizations. Hi-Joon Park had made the greatest contributions to the field. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most popular journals in this field. "Electroacupuncture" and "Bee venom acupuncture" were emerging research hotspots. Conclusion: The research on acupuncture on PD is potential. Authors from different countries/regions and organizations need to remove the language and academic barriers to enhance global cooperation and communications. Scholars in this field need to publish their research findings in high-quality journals to gain more attention worldwide. This study indicated that the mechanism leading to the non-motor symptoms of PD, the establishment of appropriate models that fully reflects the non-motor features of human PD, and the efficacy and safety of promising therapies for patients with PD will remain research frontiers in the future.

Number 2 Feibi Recipe (N2FBR) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. N2FBR inhibits H2O2-mediated oxidative stress damage in alveolar epithelial cells by increasing autophagy, as we previously demonstrated. However, it is unknown if similar mechanisms occur in vivo. We established a pulmonary fibrosis model by instilling bleomycin (BLM) from the airway to examine the effects of N2FBR on pulmonary fibrosis and investigate its probable mechanism in this work. We discovered that N2FBR treatment effectively alleviated interstitial fibrosis as well as collagen deposition, primarily in upregulating SOD, GSH-Px, T-AOC and downregulating MDA content. N2FBR also increased the expression of LC3B, Beclin-1, LAMP1, TFEB and downregulated the expression of p62, legumain. N2FBR treatment boosted the production of autophagosomes, according to the results of the TEM observation. Furthermore, we explored that N2FBR exerted its anti-oxidative stress and pro-autophagy effects via GSK-3ß/mTOR signalling pathway. Therefore, these results provide further evidence for the protective effect of N2FBR in pulmonary fibrosis. Our findings could have ramifications for the development of antifibrosis therapies.

BACKGROUND: Chinese herbs for supplementing qi and activating blood circulation (CH) combined with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is widely used for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in China, but there is a lack of literature to evaluate its efficacy and clinical value. PURPOSE: This study compared CH + NAC with other treatments by network meta-analysis to clarify its clinical value. METHODS: Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Data, VIP Database, and China Biology Medicine were searched. Outcomes included lung function (DLCO (%), VC (%), FVC (%), FVC (L)), 6-min walking distance (6MWD), score of St George's respiratory questionnaire (SGRQ), blood gas analysis (PaO2, PaCO2). The data were analyzed by Review Manager 5.4, Stata 12.0 and ADDIS 1.16.5. RESULTS: 23 studies including 1390 patients (702 in intervention group and 688 in control group) were collected to compare 8 outcome indicators among different treatments involving CH, CH+NAC, CH+PFD, NAC, PFD and PFD+NAC on IPF. Network meta-analysis showed that CH was better than NAC in terms of DLCO (%) (MD = 5.14, 95%CI: 1.01 to 8.68) and 6MWD (MD = 49.17, 95%CI: 25.97 to 71.36) as well as PFD + NAC was better than NAC in terms of FVC (L) (MD = -0.56, 95%CI: -0.83 to -0.31). In rankings results, CH + NAC is the best in terms of FVC (%), SGRQ, PaO2 and PaCO2; CH is the best in terms of DLCO (%), VC (%) and 6MWD; CH + PFD is the best in terms of FVC (L). CONCLUSION: CH related treatments may have advantages in the treatment of IPF and CH + NAC may have clinical application value. However, limited by the quality and quantity of researches included, more rational and scientific randomized controlled trials containing large sample sizes need to be conducted to further verify our conclusions.

The bottom mud of mangroves contains numerous microbial groups that play an important role in the main ecological functions of the mangrove ecosystem. The diversity and functional and environmental factors related to microbial communities, in terms of the assembly process and in environmental adaptation of the abundance and rare bacterial communities in the mangrove ecosystem, have not been fully explored. We used 16S high-throughput sequencing and operational taxonomic unit analysis to compare the diversity and composition of bacterial communities in different tidal zones in the sediments of the Zhanjiang Gaoqiao Mangrove Nature Reserve, compare the ecological adaptation thresholds and phylogenetic signals of bacterial communities under different environmental gradients, and examine the factors affecting the composition of the bacterial community. The diversity of microbial species and structure and function of the mangrove sediments were affected by the environment, showing the trend: mid tide zone > climax zone > low tide zone. Organic matter content, oxygen content, pH, and total phosphorus were identified as important environmental factors determining the functional diversity of bacterial communities and survival, while pH influences species evolution. The abundant taxa showed a wider response threshold and stronger phylogenetic signals of ecological preference across environmental gradients compared to rare taxa. The abundant bacterial groups have broader environmental adaptability than rare bacterial groups, and different environmental factors affect different communities and functions in the mangrove ecological environment. These results elucidate the mechanism underlying the generation and maintenance of bacterial diversity in response to global environmental changes.

Feibi decoction (FBD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine and has been clinically used in the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis (PF), which is characterized by diffuse interstitial inflammation and exaggerated collagen accumulation. However, the potential mechanisms remain to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of FBD-medicated serum (FBDS) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in macrophages. In RAW264.7 macrophages and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs), FBDS treatment significantly inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by LPS. In addition, it was indicated that FBDS treatment suppressed the activation of NF-κB and Smad2/Smad3 following LPS treatment. Furthermore, FBDS treatment decreased the expression of transforming growth factor-ß1 and chitinase-3-like protein 1. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that treatment with FBDS inhibited LPS-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 and BMDM cells. These data may improve understanding of the effect of FBD on anti-inflammation and help determine the mechanisms underlying the alleviation of PF via FBD.

Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis (FICRD) is a complication of fluoroscopy-guided intervention. Unlike acute radiation dermatitis, FICRD is different as delayed onset and usually appears without preexisting acute dermatitis. Unfortunately, the chronic and progressive pathology of FICRD makes it difficult to treat, and some patients need to receive wide excision and reconstruction surgery. Due to lack of standard treatment, investigating underlying mechanism is needed in order to develop an effective therapy. Herein, the Hippo pathway is specifically identified using an RNA-seq analysis in mild damaged skin specimens of patients with FICRD. Furthermore, specific increase of the Yes-associated protein (YAP1), an effector of the Hippo pathway, in skin region with mild damage plays a protective role for keratinocytes via positively regulating the numerous downstream genes involved in different biological processes. Interestingly, irradiated-keratinocytes inhibit activation of fibroblasts under TGF-ß1 treatment via remote control by an exosome containing YAP1. More importantly, targeting one of YAP1 downstream genes, nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1), which encodes glucocorticoid receptor, has revealed its therapeutic potential to treat FICRD by inhibiting fibroblasts activation in vitro and preventing formation of radiation ulcers in a mouse model and in patients with FICRD. Taken together, this translational research demonstrates the critical role of YAP1 in FICRD and identification of a feasible, effective therapy for patients with FICRD. KEY MESSAGES: • YAP1 overexpression in skin specimens of radiation dermatitis from FICRD patient. • Radiation-induced YAP1 expression plays protective roles by promoting DNA damage repair and inhibiting fibrosis via remote control of exosomal YAP1. • YAP1 positively regulates NR3C1 which encodes glucocorticoid receptor expression. • Targeting glucocorticoid receptor by prednisolone has therapeutic potential for FICRD patient.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is the most common disease in the world, which lead the patients to suffer the disability both physically and psychologically. The chronic pain can affects the patients to work, socialize, sleep and can lead to depressive illness, decreased motivation, and a reduction in physical activity. Acupuncture is a promising treatment for the chronic pain which has a long history of use in China. This protocol aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of touching periosteum acupuncture therapy on patients with chronic pain. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial literatures which include touching periosteum acupuncture therapy for treating chronic pain will be searched from 8 electronic databases including China Biology Medicine disc, VIP database, WanFang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Excerpt Medical Database, and Web of Science. The language will be restricted to Chinese and English. The primary outcome is to measure the relief of the pain by Visual Analogue Scale. Two or 3 reviewers will conduct the study selection, data extraction and the evaluation of the risk of bias. RevMan software (V.5.3) will be used to perform the assessment of the risk of bias and data synthesis. RESULTS: From this study, we will confirm the effectiveness of safety of in the treatment of chronic pain. CONCLUSIONS: We will ascertain the effectiveness of safety of touching periosteum acupuncture therapy in the treatment of chronic pain, to provide evidence to guide touching periosteum acupuncture therapy for patients with chronic pain in the future. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval will not be necessary, because the included publications in our study are all from published articles. This systematic review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference report to provide a reference in this field. TRIAL REGISTRATION: CRD42021243387.

Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in the world, especially in developing countries. Drug therapy is one of the main ways to treat cardiovascular diseases. Among them, great progress has been made in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases with traditional Chinese medicine. In terms of experimental research, the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been thoroughly discussed in vitro and in vivo. In terms of clinical treatment, traditional Chinese medicine with flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids as the main effective components has a definite effect on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia, angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, with high safety and good application prospects. With the further research on the effective ingredients, mechanism and adverse reactions of traditional Chinese medicine, it will be beneficial to the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine, reduce side effects and promote the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Calycosin and its derivatives, the main bioactive flavonoids in Astragalus membranaceus have multiple biological effects, such as antioxidant, pro-angiogenesis, anti-tumour, and anti-inflammatory effects. Based on the above biological effects, calycosin has been shown to have good potential for cardiovascular protection. The potent antioxidant effect of calycosin may play an important role in the cardiovascular protective potential. For injured cardiac myocytes, calycosin and its derivatives can alleviate the cell damage mainly marked by the release of myocardial enzymes and reduce the death level of cardiac myocytes mainly characterized by apoptosis through various mechanisms. For vascular endothelial cells, calycosin also has multiple effects and multiple mechanisms, such as promoting vascular endothelial cell proliferation, exerting vasodilating effect and directly affecting the synthesis function of endothelial cells. The present review will address the bioactivity of calycosin in cardiovascular diseases such as protective effects on cardiac myocytes and vascular endothelial cells and elucidate main mechanism of calycosin and its derivatives to exert the above biological effects.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of catgut embedding at back-shu points on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in rats based on IKK/IKB/NF-κB signaling pathway and downstream inflammatory factors. METHODS: Eighty SPF SD rats were selected, among them 10 rats were selected divided into a normal group (group A), and the remaining 70 rats were fed with high-fat diet to establish NASH model. At the end of 12 weeks, 10 rats were randomly selected to verify whether the model establishment was successful. Then the remaining 60 rats were randomly divided into a model group (group B), a catgut embedding at back-shu points group (group C), a catgut embedding at abdominal points group (group D), an acupuncture at back-shu points group (group E), a sham catgut embedding group (group F) and a western medication group (group G), 10 rats in each group. The rats in the group C were treated with catgut embedding at "Ganshu" (BL 18), "Pishu" (BL 20), "Weishu" (BL 21) and "Shenshu" (BL 23); the rats in the group D were treated with catgut embedding at "Daheng" (SP 15), "Fujie" (SP 14), "Huaroumen" (ST 24) and "Tianshu" (ST 25); the rats in the group E were treated with acupuncture at the same acupoints as the group C; the rats in the group F were treated with catgut embedding at back-shu points but the needle did not enter subcutaneous tissue gamma; the rats in the group G were treated with intragastric administration of vitamin E capsule. All the treatment was given for 4 weeks. The rats in the group A were fed with normal diet until the end of 16 weeks without any intervention. The rats in the group B continued to be fed with high-fat diet until the end of 16 weeks. After the intervention, the liver index was calculated; the liver histomorphology was observed by HE staining; the liver function [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma glutamyl transferase (γ-GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP)] and blood lipid [serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL)] were measured by serum biochemistry. The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ßwere detected by ELISA, and the expressions of IKK-α, NF-κBp65, IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α proteins in liver tissue were detected by Western blot. The temperature of the conception vessel and the governor vessel was measured by infrared thermography. RESULTS: Compared with the group A, the obvious steatosis and inflammatory cell infiltration were observed in the group B, and the body weight, liver wet-weight and liver index were all increased (P<0.01). Compared with the group B, the liver tissue morphology in the group C, the group D, the group E and the group G was improved in varying degrees, and the liver index was decreased (P<0.05), which was the most significant in the group C (P<0.05). Compared with the group A, the ALT, γ-GGT, ALP, TG, TC, LDL, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ß were all increased in the group B (P<0.01); compared with the group B, the ALT, γ-GGT, ALP, TG, TC, LDL, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ß in all intervention groups were all decreased in varying degrees (P<0.01, P<0.05), which was the most significant in the group C (P<0.01). Compare with the group A, the expressions of IKK-α, NF-κBp65, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ßproteins in the group B were all increased (P<0.01); compared with the group B, the expressions of IKK-α, NF-κBp65, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ßproteins in all intervention groups were decreased in varying degrees (P<0.05), which was the most significant in the group C (P<0.01). Compared with the group A, the temperature of the conception vessel and governor vessel was decreased in the group B (P<0.01). Compared with the group B, the temperature of the conception vessel and governor vessel was all increased in the group C, the group D and the group E (P<0.01); the temperature of the conception vessel in the group C was similar to that in the group D (P>0.05), while the temperature of the governor vessel in the group C was superior to that in the group D (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The catgut embedding at back-shu points might inhibit the activation of IKK/IKB/NF-κB signaling pathway to interrupt the inflammatory cascade, and reduce the "second hit" of inflammatory factors on liver, which could slow down NASH progress and prevent and treat NASH.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety in 105 patients with seasonal Influenza in Beijing, the mixture prepared with Chinese medicines follows the treatment regimen of releasing exterior cold and clearing interior heat. METHODS: Total 330 patients with seasonal influenza were enrolled and randomly and averagely divided into the Chinese herbal medicine, the western medicine and the Chinese patent medicine group. They were treated with Chinese medicine Oseltamivir Phosphate Capsules and the Scattering Wind and Resolving Toxins Capsules. The main efficacy indicators were the antifebrile onset time and recovery time of body temperature. The efficacy and safety of the mixture was scientifically evaluated. Comparisons of several variables were analyzed. RESULTS: Median antifebrile onset time of the Chinese herbal medicine group was significantly shorter than the western medicine group (P < 0.05) and the Chinese patent medicine group (P < 0.05). The median antifebrile recovery time of the Chinese herbal medicine group was significantly shorter than the Chinese patent medicine group (P < 0.05). The groups evaluated by TCM symptom pattern effect, both the Chinese herbal medicine group and Western Medicine group were better than the Chinese patent medicine group (P < 0.05). The disappearance rate of main symptoms and some minor symptom patterns of the Chinese herbal medicine group were higher than the other 2 groups. CONCLUSION: The mixture of releasing exterior cold and clearing interior heat could significantly shorten the fever time with safety.

BACKGROUND:: Psychocardiological researches have suggested a central role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on psychocardiological mechanism. This study aimed to further explore the central role of 5-HT and pretreatment effects of XinLingWan on rats with myocardial infarction (MI) and/or depression. METHODS:: Ninety Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: MI group, depression group, and MI + depression group (n = 30 in each group). Each group was then divided into three subgroups (n = 10 in each subgroup): a negative control subgroup (NCS), a Western medicine subgroup (WMS), and a traditional Chinese medicine subgroup (TCMS), which were received pretreatment once a day for 4 weeks by saline, 20 mg/kg sertraline mixed with 2 ml saline, and 40 mg/kg XingLingWan mixed with 2 ml saline, respectively. Different rat models were established after different pretreatments. Rats were then sacrificed for detection of serum 5-HT, platelet 5-HT, 5-HT2A receptors (5-HT2AR), and serotonin transporter (SERT). Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least-significant difference (LSD) testing. RESULTS:: MI group: compared with NCS, there was a significant increase in WMS and TCMS of serum 5-HT (176.15 ± 11.32 pg/ml vs. 334.50 ± 29.09 pg/ml and 474.04 ± 10.86 pg/ml, respectively, both P = 0.000), platelet 5-HT (129.74 ± 27.17 pg/ml vs. 322.24 ± 11.60 pg/ml and 340.4 5 ± 17.99 pg/ml, respectively, both P = 0.000); depression group: compared with NCS, there was a significant increase in WMS and TCMS of serum 5-HT (194.69 ± 5.09 pg/ml vs. 326.21 ± 39.98 pg/ml and 456.33 ± 23.12 pg/ml, respectively, both P = 0.000), platelet 5-HT (175.15 ± 4.07 pg/ml vs. 204.56 ± 18.59 pg/ml and 252.03 ± 22.26 pg/ml, respectively, P = 0.004 and P = 0.000, respectively); MI + depression group: compared with NCS, there was a significant increase in both WMS and TCMS of serum 5-HT (182.50 ± 10.23 pg/ml vs. 372.55 ± 52.23 pg/ml and 441.76 ± 23.38 pg/ml, respectively, both P = 0.000) and platelet 5-HT (180.83 ± 11.08 pg/ml vs. 221.12 ± 22.23 pg/ml and 265.37 ± 29.49 pg/ml, respectively, P = 0.011 and P = 0.000, respectively). CONCLUSIONS:: By elevating the amount of 5-HT and modulating 5-HT2AR and SERT levels in serum and platelets, XinLingWan and sertraline were found to exert pretreatment effect on rat models of MI and/or depression.

Plant secondary metabolite 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA) has been suggested to stimulate animal reproduction. 6-MBOA is detected in Leymus chinensis, a main diet of Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii). We have previously reported a stimulatory effect of 6-MBOA on reproduction of male Brandt's voles under a short-day photoperiod. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of 6-MBOA on reproductive physiology of male Brandt's voles under a long-day photoperiod and examine if 6-MBOA under this photoperiodic regime altered the reproductive status of male Brandt's voles differently than the short-day photoperiod. Under the long-day photoperiod, a high dose of 6-MBOA decreased KiSS-1 mRNA in the arcuate nucleus (ARC), and we also saw a decrease in circulating levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone (T). Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and cytochrome P45011a1 (CYP11a1) in the testes, and relative testis weight also decreased with 6-MBOA administration. Compared to the short-day photoperiod, animals under the long-day photoperiod exhibited increased body weight as well as all other reproductive parameters. Our results showed that 6-MBOA inhibited the reproduction of male Brandt's vole under a long-day photoperiod, a stark contrast from its stimulatory effects under a short-day photoperiod. The paradoxical effects of 6-MBOA suggest it may act as a partial agonist of melatonin. These results provide insight into the complex interactions between environmental factors such as photoperiod and diet in the control of Brandt's vole reproduction.

This study was designed to investigate the physiological and biochemical responses of Brandt's voles to the persistent presence of dietary tannic acid. The diet for animals in the experimental group was supplemented with 3% dietary tannic acid for 5weeks. The control group received a commercial lab chow. No significant differences were detected in body weight, organ (heart, kidney, and liver) weights, and organ parameters between animals from two groups. However, voles in the experimental group had significantly higher daily food intake, increased contents of proline and histidine in saliva and feces after protein hydrolysis, and elevated hepatic expression of transferrin than the control. Our results suggested the existence of adaptive strategies developed in Brandt's voles to overcome the adverse effects of dietary tannic acid. (1) Food consumption was increased to satisfy their nutritional demands. (2) The secretion of tannic-acid-binding salivary proteins was promoted. (3) The absorption of iron was enhanced. These alterations contributed to neutralize the negative effects of tannic acid and maintain body mass in animals supplemented with tannic acid. As the result of the consumption of tannic acid, hepatic expression of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase was significantly decreased, while the overall potential of the antioxidant system, characterized by increased hepatic enzymatic activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase, was enhanced. Our results also implied the involvement of tannic acid in the regulation of lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in voles.

In order to compare the differences of 35 Menthae Herba samples collected on the market and at producing areas, the contents of six total terpenoids, the essential oil and chromatographic fingerprints were analyzed, which provided evidences for drawing up the commodity specifications and grading criteria of Menthae Herba. GC-MS method was used to analyze the chemical constituents of 35 different samples. The chromatographic fingerprints obtained by using GC were then evaluated by similarity analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis. The relativity between the content of six terpenoids and the essential oil were studied. In this study, the chemical profiles of 35 samples from different producing areas had significant disparity. All samples collected in the report could be categorized into four chemical types, L-menthol, pulegone, carvone and L-menthone, but the chemical profiles had no relationship with the areas. The chromatographic fingerprints of the samples from different types were dissimilar, while the different producing areas were difficult to be separated. It was indicated that the content of volatile oil was positively correlated with the content of L-menthol and the sum of six total terpenoids. The content of the essential oil, L-menthol and the sum of six total terpenoids of Menthae Herba were considered as one of the commercial specifications and grading criteria. These results in the research could be helpful to draw up the commercial specification and grading criteria of Menthae Herba from a view of chemical information.

In this study, 120 patients with rheumatic heart disease undergoing valve replacement were randomly divided into the control group and the Qishen group, with 60 cases in each group. Before the operation, the control group was given routine heart and diuretic treatments and placebo of Qishen Yiqi dropping pills for seven days (0.5 g each time, three times a day); While the Qishen group was given Qishen Yiqi dropping pills for seven days (0.5 g each time after meal, three times a day) on the basis of the routine treatments. The right ventricular end-diastolic volume (RVEDV), end-systolic volume (RVESV), stroke volume (SV) and right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) were detected after the operation. The results showed that patients in the two groups showed significantly lower right ventricular end diastolic volume (RVEDV), right ventricular end systolic volume (RVESV) and stroke volume (SV) decreased than that before the operation, but with significantly higher Ejection fraction (RVEF) significantly than that before the operation. However, the Qishen group showed a significantly lower right heart function reduction than the control group, with the statistical significance in the differences (P < 0.05). This indicated that the pretreatment with Qishenyiqi Drop Pills showed a remarkable efficacy in the improvement of right ventricular function after valve replacement.

Microglia-mediated inflammation is a major pathological mechanism contributing to Alzheimer's disease (AD), and has been proposed as a potential therapeutic target. Chunghyuldan (CHD; Qingxue-dan in Chinese and Daio-Orengedokuto in Japanese) possesses wide-ranging biological effects, including anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-stroke, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities that could affect neurological functions. In this study, we examined the effects of CHD in in-vitro and in-vivo models of AD induced by the oligomeric form of amyloid-beta (Aß oligomer), which acts directly on microglia-mediated neuroinflammation to result in neuronal damage and cognitive impairment. CHD at 0.1-100 µg·mL(-1) significantly protected PC12 cells and rat primary hippocampal cells from Aß oligomer1-42 toxicity. In addition, CHD at 1-10 µg·mL(-1) inhibited Aß oligomer1-42 induced production of nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1ß in microglial cells. In an in-vivo AD model, administration of CHD (50 mg·(kg body mass)(-1), for 5 days, per oral) inhibited the activation of astrocytes and microglia in the dentate gyrus and neuronal damage in the CA1 of the ipsilateral hippocampus. Moreover, CHD ameliorated cognitive impairment induced by Aß oligomer1-42 toxicity. These results demonstrate the neuroprotective effects of CHD through inhibition of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in in-vitro and in-vivo AD-like models induced by Aß oligomer1-42 toxicity.
