RESUMEN

Silicon transistors are approaching their physical limit, calling for the emergence of a technological revolution. As the acknowledged ultimate version of transistor channels, 2D semiconductors are of interest for the development of post-Moore electronics due to their useful properties and all-in-one potentials. Here, the promise and current status of 2D semiconductors and transistors are reviewed, from materials and devices to integrated applications. First, we outline the evolution and challenges of silicon-based integrated circuits, followed by a detailed discussion on the properties and preparation strategies of 2D semiconductors and van der Waals heterostructures. Subsequently, the significant progress of 2D transistors, including device optimization, large-scale integration, and unconventional devices, are presented. We also examine 2D semiconductors for advanced heterogeneous and multifunctional integration beyond CMOS. Finally, the key technical challenges and potential strategies for 2D transistors and integrated circuits are also discussed. We envision that the field of 2D semiconductors and transistors could yield substantial progress in the upcoming years and hope this review will trigger the interest of scientists planning their next experiment.

Although selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) often coexist naturally in the soil of China, the health risks to local residents consuming Se-Cd co-enriched foods are unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effects of chemical-based selenocystine (SeCys2) on cadmium chloride-induced human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cell injury and plant (Cardamine hupingshanensis)-derived SeCys2 against Cd-induced liver injury in mice. We found that chemical- and plant-based SeCys2 showed protective effects against Cd-induced HepG2 cell injury and liver damage in mice, respectively. Compared with Cd intervention group, co-treatment with chemical- or plant-based SeCys2 both alleviated liver toxicity and ferroptosis by decreasing ferrous iron, acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain (ACSL) family member 4, lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3, reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxide levels, and increasing ACSL3, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α, solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) and glutathione and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) levels. In conclusion, chemical- and plant-based SeCys2 alleviated Cd-induced hepatotoxicity and ferroptosis by regulating SLC7A11/GPX4 signaling and lipid peroxidation. Our findings indicate that potential Cd toxicity from consuming foods grown in Se- and Cd-rich soils should be re-evaluated. This study offers a new perspective for the development of SeCys2-enriched agricultural products.

Selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) usually co-existed in soils, especially in areas with Se-rich soils in China. The potential health consequences for the local populations consuming foods rich in Se and Cd are unknown. Cardamine hupingshanensis (HUP) is Se and Cd hyperaccumulator plant that could be an ideal natural product to assess the protective effects of endogenous Se against endogenous Cd-caused bone damage. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed 5.22 mg/kg cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (Cd 3.2 mg/kg body weight (BW)), or HUP solutions containing Cd 3.2 mg/kg BW and Se 0.15, 0.29 or 0.50 mg/kg BW (corresponding to the HUP0, HUP1 and HUP2 groups) interventions. Se-enriched HUP1 and HUP2 significantly decreased Cd-induced femur microstructure damage and regulated serum bone osteoclastic marker levels and osteogenesis-related genes. In addition, endogenous Se significantly decreased kidney fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) protein expression and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, and raised serum calcitriol (1,25(OH)2D3). Furthermore, Se also regulated gut microbiota involved in skeletal metabolism disorder. In conclusion, endogenous Se, especially with higher doses (the HUP2 group), positively affects bone formation and resorption by mitigating the damaging effects of endogenous Cd via the modulation of renal FGF23 expression, circulating 1,25(OH)2D3 and PTH and gut microbiota composition.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are regarded as pivotal semiconductor candidates for next-generation devices due to their atomic-scale thickness, high carrier mobility and ultrafast charge transfer. In analog to the traditional semiconductor industry, batch production of wafer-scale TMDs is the prerequisite to proceeding with their integrated circuits evolution. However, the production capacity of TMD wafers is typically constrained to a single and small piece per batch (mainly ranging from 2 to 4 inches), due to the stringent conditions required for effective mass transport of multiple precursors during growth. Here we developed a modularized growth strategy for batch production of wafer-scale TMDs, enabling the fabrication of 2-inch wafers (15 pieces per batch) up to a record-large size 12-inch wafers (3 pieces per batch). Each module, comprising a self-sufficient local precursor supply unit for robust individual TMD wafer growth, is vertically stacked with others to form an integrated array and thus a batch growth. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including optical spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and transport measurements unambiguously illustrate the high-crystallinity and the large-area uniformity of as-prepared monolayer films. Furthermore, these modularized units demonstrate versatility by enabling the conversion of as-produced wafer-scale MoS2 into various structures, such as Janus structures of MoSSe, alloy compounds of MoS2(1-x)Se2x, and in-plane heterostructures of MoS2-MoSe2. This methodology showcases high-quality and high-yield wafer output and potentially enables the seamless transition from lab-scale to industrial-scale 2D semiconductor complementary to silicon technology.

Erinacine A (EA), a natural neuroprotectant, is isolated from a Chinese herbal medicine, Hericium erinaceus. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of EA in a rat model of traumatic optic neuropathy. The optic nerves (ONs) of adult male Wistar rats were crushed using a standardized method and divided into three experimental groups: phosphate-buffered saline (PBS control)-treated group, standard EA dose-treated group (2.64 mg/kg in 0.5 mL of PBS), and double EA dose-treated group (5.28 mg/kg in 0.5 mL of PBS). After ON crush, each group was fed orally every day for 14 days before being euthanized. The visual function, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density, and RGC apoptosis were determined using flash visual-evoked potentials (fVEP) analysis, retrograde Fluoro-Gold labelling, and TdT-dUTP nick end-labelling (TUNEL) assay, respectively. Macrophage infiltration of ON was detected by immunostaining (immunohistochemistry) for ED1. The protein levels of phosphor-receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase1 (pRIP1), caspase 8 (Cas8), cleaved caspase 3 (cCas3), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, tumour necrosis factor receptor1 (TNFR1), interleukin (IL)-1ß, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) were evaluated by Western blotting. When comparing the standard EA dose-treated group and the double EA dose-treated group with the PBS-treated group, fVEP analysis showed that the amplitudes of P1−N2 in the standard EA dose group and the double EA dose-treated group were 1.8 and 2.4-fold, respectively, higher than that in the PBS-treated group (p < 0.05). The density of RGC in the standard EA dose-treated group and the double EA dose-treated group were 2.3 and 3.7-fold, respectively, higher than that in the PBS-treated group (p < 0.05). The TUNEL assay showed that the standard EA dose-treated group and the double EA dose-treated group had significantly reduced numbers of apoptotic RGC by 10.0 and 15.6-fold, respectively, compared with the PBS-treated group (p < 0.05). The numbers of macrophages on ON were reduced by 1.8 and 2.2-fold in the standard EA dose-treated group and the double EA dose-treated group, respectively (p < 0.01). On the retinal samples, the levels of pRIP, Cas8, cCas3, TNF-α, TNFR1, IL-1ß, and iNOS were decreased, whereas those of Nrf2, HO-1, and SOD1 were increased in both EA-treated groups compared to those in the PBS-treated group (p < 0.05). EA treatment has neuroprotective effects on an experimental model of traumatic optic neuropathy by suppressing apoptosis, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress to protect the RGCs from death as well as preserving the visual function.

In this study, rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry(REIMS) fingerprints of 388 samples of roots of Pulsatilla chinensis(PC) and its common counterfeits, roots of P. cernua and roots of Anemone tomentosa were analyzed based on REIMS combined with machine learning. The samples were determined by REIMS through dry burning, and the REIMS data underwent cluster analysis, similarity analysis(SA), and principal component analysis(PCA). After dimensionality reduction by PCA, the data were analyzed by similarity analysis and self-organizating map(SOM), followed by modeling. The results indicated that the REIMS fingerprints of the samples showed the characteristics of variety differences and the SOM model could accurately distinguish PC, P. cernua, and A. tomentosa. REIMS combined with machine learning algorithm has a broad application prospect in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.

Supplementing with vitamin B3 has been reported to protect against retinal ganglion cell (RGC) damage events and exhibit multiple neuroprotective properties in a mouse model of optic nerve injury. In this study, a rat model of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy was used to assess the neuroprotective benefits of vitamin B3 (rAION). Vitamin B3 (500 mg/kg/day) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered to the rAION-induced rats every day for 28 days. The vitamin B3-treated group had significantly higher first positive and second negative peak (P1-N2) amplitudes of flash visual-evoked potentials and RGC densities than the PBS-treated group (p < 0.05). A terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay conducted on vitamin B3-treated rats revealed a significant reduction in apoptotic cells (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance activity showed that vitamin B3 treatment decreased reactive oxygen species (p < 0.05). Therefore, vitamin B3 supplementation preserves vision in rAION-induced rats by reducing oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial apoptosis.

Treatments are lacking for sarcopenia, which is an age-related disease characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and/or physical performance. Icariin is a phytomolecule from herbal Epimedium, a traditional Chinese medicine widely used to treat musculoskeletal disorders for thousands of years. Here the effects of icariin against sarcopenia are investigated and the underlying mechanism is elucidated. A classic rat model of bilaterally orchiectomized (ORX) is used to induce sarcopenia. After administration for 8 weeks, compared to the control group, the forelimb grip strength, the specific tetanic forces of the soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL) are higher, and the fiber cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscle are larger in the icariin group. In addition, icariin promotes mRNA and protein expressions of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) both in SOL and EDL. Mechanistically, icariin significantly suppresses the mRNA and protein expressions of FOXO3a, atrogin-1, and MuRF-1, which are related to the degradation of myosin heavy chain. Collectively, icariin protects from sarcopenia in ORX rats characterized by enhancing grip strength and skeletal muscle contraction, as well as increasing skeletal muscle CSA by inhibiting the ubiquitination degradation of the MyHC in skeletal muscle fibers.

Hemiepiphytic figs killing their host trees is an ecological process unique to the tropics. Yet the benefits and adaptive strategies of their special life history remain poorly understood. We compared leaf phosphorus (P) content data of figs and palms worldwide, and functional traits and substrate P content of hemiepiphytic figs (Ficus tinctoria), their host palm and nonhemiepiphytic conspecifics at different growth stages in a common garden. We found that leaf P content of hemiepiphytic figs and their host palms significantly decreased when they were competing for soil resources, but that of hemiepiphytic figs recovered after host death. P availability in the canopy humus and soil decreased significantly with the growth of hemiepiphytic figs. Functional trait trade-offs of hemiepiphytic figs enabled them to adapt to the P shortage while competing with their hosts. From the common garden to a global scale, the P competition caused by high P demand of figs may be a general phenomenon. Our results suggest that P competition is an important factor causing host death, except for mechanically damaging and shading hosts. Killing hosts benefits hemiepiphytic figs by reducing interspecific P competition and better acquiring P resources in the P-deficient tropics, thereby linking the life history strategy of hemiepiphytic figs to the widespread P shortage in tropical soils.

Cordyceps cicadae mycelium is an herbal medicine used to provide anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic actions. However, little is known about the role of C. cicadae mycelium in neuroprotection. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of C. cicadae mycelium extract (CCME) in the optic nerve crush (ONC) model. The optic nerves of adult male Wistar rats (aged 7-8 weeks) were crushed by a standardized method. Rats were divided equally into three groups: 1) a sham-operated group (sham), 2) a phosphate buffered saline-treated control group (crush), and 3) a CCME-treated group (CCME) that received CCME once daily for 7 consecutive days at doses of 100 mg/kg before ONC. Two weeks after ONC in rats, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and visual function were determined by using retrograde labeling with FluoroGold and flash visual evoked potentials. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay and immunohistochemistry of ED1 (a marker of macrophage/microglia) were used to evaluate the antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects of CCME in the optic nerve section. The P1-N2 amplitude and RGC density in the CCME-treated group were higher than those in the ONC control (crush) group by 5.15- and 3.13-fold, respectively. The numbers of TUNEL-positive cells and ED1-positive cells in the CCME-treated group were reduced by 4.38- and 6.63-fold, respectively, compared to those in the crush group. Oral administration of CCME provided neuroprotective effects in the ONC model via antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory actions, which provides a potential treatment for patient with traumatic optic neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: This research was designed to probe into the influencing factors of holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model on psychology and quality of life in advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients. METHODS: Altogether 194 patients with advanced GC treated in our hospital from May 2017 to July 2018 were divided into two groups according to different nursing intervention methods. Where from, 86 were given routine nursing intervention and 108 were given holistic nursing intervention under a social medical model. The psychology, pain relief, sleep quality and self-nursing ability of patients were compared before and after intervention. The quality of life before and after intervention and the nursing satisfaction score after nursing were recorded. The factors affecting their quality of life were assessed by Logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The SAS, SDS, NRS and PSQI scores in the intervention group (IG) were obviously lower than those in the control group (CG) after nursing. The ESCA and EORTC QLQ-C30 scores after nursing in the IG were markedly higher than those in the CG. The total nursing satisfaction of patients in the IG after nursing was obviously higher than that in the CG. Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage, unimproved negative emotion, lack of self-nursing ability and routine nursing intervention all increased the risk of reduced quality of life. CONCLUSION: The decline in the quality of life of patients with advanced GC results from a comprehensive action of various risk factors, and holistic nursing under a social medical model can improve the psychology of patients, improve their self-nursing ability and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE@#To compare the clinical effect of wheat grain moxibustion and warming acupuncture on chronic superficial gastritis of spleen-stomach deficiency and cold.@*METHODS@#A total of 200 patients with chronic superficial gastritis of spleen-stomach deficiency and cold were randomly divided into a wheat grain moxibustion group (100 cases, 13 cases dropped off ) and a warming acupuncture group (100 cases, 16 cases dropped off ). The acupoints of Zhongwan (CV 12), Tianshu (ST 25), Qihai (CV 6), Liangqiu (ST 34) and Zusanli (ST 36) were selected in both groups. The patients in the wheat grain moxibustion group were treated with wheat grain moxibustion, and 5 cone were given on every acupoint each time. Moxibustion was performed after acupuncture in the warming acupuncture group, and 3 cone each acupoint. Both groups were treated every other day for 15 times. The scores of clinical symptoms and signs, scores of physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of quality of life in the two groups were recorded before and after treatment and during follow-up 1 month after treatment, and the clinical effects of the two groups were evaluated after treatment and during follow-up.@*RESULTS@#After treatment and during follow-up, the scores of clinical symptoms and signs of the two groups were lower than before treatment (@*CONCLUSION@#The wheat grain moxibustion can effectively improve the clinical symptoms, signs and quality of life in patients with chronic superficial gastritis of spleen-stomach deficiency and cold, and its long-term effect is better than warming acupuncture.

Astaxanthin, a xanthophyll belonging to the family of carotenoids, is a potent antioxidant. However, much less is known about its protective effects on the oxidative stress of ischemic optic nerve. We hypothesized that astaxanthin treatment could protect retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from death via anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic responses. Adult male Wistar rats were fed astaxanthin (100 mg/kg/day) by daily gavage for seven consecutive days, either before or after inducing oxidative stress in the retina by photodynamic treatment. The visual function, RGC apoptosis, macrophage infiltration in the optic nerve, expression of p-Akt, p-mTOR, SGK1, pS6K, Nrf2, p62, TNFα, Il1ß in retinas were investigated. The visual function and the RGC densities were significantly higher in both pre- and post-treatment groups. The numbers of apoptotic RGCs and extrinsic macrophage infiltration in the optic nerve were significantly decreased in both astaxanthin-treated groups. Furthermore, pre- and post-treatment of astaxanthin showed a higher expression of p-Akt, p-mTOR, Nrf2 and superoxide dismutase activity, and a lower expression of cleaved caspase-3, suggesting anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative roles. Our findings indicate that astaxanthin can preserve visual function and reduce RGC apoptosis after ischemic insults. Including astaxanthin in daily diet as a supplement may be beneficiary for ischemic optic neuropathy.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Bushen Zhuanggu granule on the expressions of serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and their receptors in bone tissues of ovariectomized rats. Methods: Forty-eight SD female rats (weight 273±21.3 g) were divided into 4 four groups: the dosage of Bushen Zhuanggu granule group (BSZG) was 2.5 g/(kg·d),the do -sage of estradiol group(E2) was 0.071mg/(kg·d),sham group (SHAM) and ovariectomized model group (OVX group) were given the same amount of saline by oral administration.Each group included 12 rats,the treatments were conducted once a day. After 3 and 6 months of treatment,bone mineral density (B -MD) was measured by bone density instrument;the serum levels of GH and IGF-1 were detected by EL-ISA;the expressions of GHR and IGF-1R of bone tissue were detected by qPCR;the optical density(OD)value and positive cell count of pituitary GH immunohistochemical tablets were analyzed by Image J software,respectively. Results: ①After 3 months intervention,compared with the SHAM, the BMD of the spine in E2 group was increased(P<0.05),and the BMD of both parts in BSZG group were increased(P<0.05).After two stage intervention,BMD of both part in the two drug groups was higher than that in the OVX group(P<0.05).②After two-stage intervention,the expression levels of serum GH and IGF-1,GHR and IGF-1R in BSZG group were higher than those in OVX group (P<0.05).The levels of serum GH and it's receptors in the E2 group were increased (P<0.05), but the serum IGF-1 level remained unchanged (P>0.05) or even was decreased (P<0.05).③After two stage in -tervention,the OD values and the positive cells count in the two drug intervention groups were increased (P>0.05).④Pearson correlation analysis showed that serum GH,IGF-1 concentration and it's receptors in bone tissue were positively related with BMD. Serum GH concentration was positively correlated with OD values and number of positive cells. Conclusion: Bushen Zhuanggu granule can be used to improve the expressions of GH,IGF-1 in serum and its receptors in bone tissues of ovariectomized osteoporosis rats to prevent further loss of bone mass and increase bone mineral density.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is one of the most serious types of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. However, low sensitivity of culture of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) increases the difficulty in clinical diagnosis, leading to diagnostic delay, and misdiagnosis. Xpert MTB/RIF assay is a rapid and simple method to detect tuberculosis. However, the efficacy of this technique in diagnosing TBM remains unclear. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of Xpert MTB/RIF for TBM, which may enhance the development of early diagnosis of TBM. METHODS: Relevant studies in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were retrieved using the keywords 'Xpert MTB/RIF', 'tuberculous meningitis (TBM)'. The pooled sensitivity, pooled specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, summary receiver operator characteristic curve, and area under the curve (AUC) of Xpert MTB/RIF were determined and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 162 studies were enrolled and only 14 met the criteria for meta-analysis. The overall pooled sensitivity of Xpert MTB/RIF was 63% [95% confidence interval (CI), 59-66%], while the overall pooled specificity was 98.1% (95% CI, 97.5-98.5%). The pooled values of positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio were 20.91% (12.71-52.82%), 0.40% (0.32-0.50%), and 71.49% (32.64-156.56%), respectively. The AUC was 0.76. CONCLUSIONS: Xpert MTB/RIF exhibited high specificity in diagnosing TBM in CSF samples, but its sensitivity was relatively low. It is necessary to combine other high-sensitive detection methods for the early diagnosis of TBM. Moreover, the centrifugation of CSF samples was found to be beneficial in improving the sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze studies published in journals included in PubMed in terms of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the therapeutic effect of acupuncture for simple obesity, so as to provide a reference for subsequent RCT-related designs and results. METHODS: RCT literature about acupuncture treatment of simple obesity from the PubMed database and from 2000 to 2016 was retrieved by using keywords of "obesity" "fat" "acupuncture" "joint application of acupuncture and herbal medicine" or "auricular point" "electroacupuncture", "acupoint application", or "cupping", followed by screening, extraction and evaluation of the design methodology and outcomes using Consolidated Standards for Reporting of Trials (CONSORT) and Standards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA). RESULTS: Fourteen articles from six countries in Asia examining the therapeutic effect of acupuncture in the treatment of simple obesity mainly by using acupoints of the Stomach Meridian were included. Generally, acupuncture was found to be more effective than sham acupuncture. However, PubMed did not include any RCTs comparing acupuncture with western medicine for weight loss and many problems (as details of needling manipulation, etc.) remained in the the research reports available in the database. CONCLUSION: All the existing RCTs generally affirm the positive efficacy of acupuncture for simple obesity, but high-quality RCTs, particularly those comparing acupuncture with western medicines for weight loss are lacking.

AIMS: The antihypertensive mechanism (s) of the epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major effective component in green tea, might associate with microRNAs (miRNAs). Here, we aimed to investigate which microRNA in aorta of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were modulated by administration of EGCG and its mechanism. MAIN METHODS: The pharmacokinetic behaviors of EGCG and epigallocatechin (EGC) in Sprague-Dawley rats were analyzed by HPLC and DRUG AND STATISTICS software. Blood pressure of SHRs was monitored by the tail-cuff method, the miRNomes of aorta from SHRs was analyzed with deep sequencing, and expression of hypertension-associated miRNAs with significant change and their host genes and target genes were validated by real-time PCR and Western blot. KEY FINDINGS: The plasma deposition of EGCG and EGC best fitted a mono-compartmental model with maximum plasma concentration post-dose (Cmax, 6.65 vs 4.45 µg/ml) and the corresponding time (Tmax, 15 vs 10 min). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) of SHRs decreased to the lowest point by 34.04 mmHg and recovered by 23.39 mmHg after 15 and 30 min of administration at dose of 300 mg/kg BW EGCG, respectively, and it decreased again at 60 min and recovered at time 2 h. Total 35 upregulated and 18 downregulated miRNAs were identified compared to the control group (p < .01) after EGCG administration. Expression of hypertension-associated miRNA-126a-3p and miRNA-150-5p were further validated. In turn, their host gene and target genes were up-regulated and down-regulated, respectively. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results indicated that miRNA-150-5p might be involved in the antihypertensive effect of EGCG through SP1/AT1R pathway.

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy between contralateral needling and homolateral (the affected side) needling in treating acute-stage peripheral facial paralysis by using systematic evaluation. Method By computer and manual retrieval, literatures about clinical trials on contralateral needling in treating acute-stage peripheral facial paralysis published before March of 2017 were collected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang database, Vip database, China Biology Medicine disc (CBMdisc), Pubmed, Web of Science, EMbase and The Cochrane Library. By adopting the Cochrane systematic evaluation, the collected data underwent meta-analysis by using RevMen 5.3 software. Result A total of 276 articles were retrieved and 11 articles were finally recruited, including 761 patients with acute-stage facial paralysis, 394 cases treated by contralateral needling and 367 by homolateral needling. The meta-analysis showed that contralateral needling produced more significant effective rate and recovery rate than homolateral needling [effective rate: RR=1.06, 95%CI(1.01,1.11), Z=2.32, P=0.02; recovery rate:RR=1.53, 95%CI(1.31,1.78), Z=5.42, P<0.01]. Moreover, contralateral needling produced a better effect in improving facial nerve function, showing an advantage in ameliorating facial movement [HB: WMD=0.26, 95%CI(0.04,0.48), Z=2.34, P=0.02; FDIP: WMD=3.77, 95%CI(1.53,6.01), Z=3.30, P<0.01]. Conclusion Contralateral needling is worth applying in treating acute-stage peripheral facial paralysis. However, due to the small amount and unsatisfactoryquality of the recruited literatures in this systematic evaluation, multiple-centered randomized trials with high quality and large sample size are expected for further verification.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the proprioceptive sensibility reflexotherapy by tendon acupuncture needling at trigger points for patients with proprioceptive disorder of cervical vertigo. METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with proprioceptive disorder of cervical vertigo were randomly assigned into a treatment group (42 cases) and a control group (37 cases). Patients in the treatment group received the proprioceptive sensibility reflexotherapy with tendon acupuncture at trigger points in the neck. And those in the control group were given traditional traction, massage and intermediate frequency electro therapy. All the treatment was given for 2 courses, once a day and 10 days as a course. The cervical vertigo symptom and function, the joint position error (JPE) and stability index (ST) before and after treatment were observed in the two groups and the effects were evaluated. RESULTS: The cervical vertigo symptom and function were improved, JPE and ST decreased after treatment in the two groups (all P<0.05), with better results in the treatment group (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The proprioceptive sensibility reflexotherapy with tendon acupuncture at trigger points is effective for proprioceptive disorder of cervical vertigo.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-3 PUFA) administration in a rat model of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (rAION). Methods: The level of blood arachidonic acid/eicosapentaenoic acid (AA/EPA) was measured to determine the suggested dosage. The rAION-induced rats were administered fish oil (1 g/day EPA) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) by daily gavage for 10 consecutive days to evaluate the neuroprotective effects. Results: Blood fatty acid analysis showed that the AA/EPA ratio was reduced from 17.6 to ≤1.5 after 10 days of fish oil treatment. The retinal ganglion cell (RGC) densities and the P1-N2 amplitude of flash visual-evoked potentials (FVEP) were significantly higher in the ω-3 PUFA-treated group, compared with the PBS-treated group (P < 0.05). The number of apoptotic cells in the RGC layer of the ω-3 PUFA-treated rats was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) compared with that of the PBS-treated rats. Treatment with ω-3 PUFAs reduced the macrophage recruitment at the optic nerve (ON) by 3.17-fold in the rAION model. The M2 macrophage markers, which decrease inflammation, were induced in the ω-3 PUFA-treated group in contrast to the PBS-treated group. In addition, the mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and inducible nitric oxide synthase were significantly reduced in the ω-3 PUFA-treated group. Conclusions: The administration of ω-3 PUFAs has neuroprotective effects in rAION, possibly through dual actions of the antiapoptosis of RGCs and anti-inflammation via decreasing inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as the regulation of macrophage polarization to decrease the cytokine-induced injury of the ON.
