RESUMEN

Improving phytoremediation techniques requires a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of plant uptake and the replenishment of the bioavailable pool of the target element, and this may be effectively explored using stable isotope methods. A repeated phytoextraction experiment over five successive crops of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) hyperaccumulator Sedum plumbizincicola X.H. Guo et S.B. Zhou ex L.H. Wu (Crassulaceae) was conducted using four agricultural soils differing in soil pH and clay content. The isotopic composition of total Zn and NH4OAc-extractable Zn in soils before phytoextraction and after the fifth crop were determined, together with Zn in shoot samples in the first crop. S. plumbizincicola preferentially took up light Zn isotopes from the NH4OAc-extractable pool (Δ66Znshoot-extract = -0.42 to -0.16‰), indicating the predominance of Zn low-affinity transport. However, after long-term phytoextraction NH4OAc-extractable Zn became isotopically lighter than prior to phytoextraction in three of the soils (Δ66Znextract: P5-P0 = -0.39 to -0.10‰). This was resulted from the equilibrium replenishment of Zn bound to iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxides based on Zn isotopic and chemical speciation analysis. Zinc showed opposite fractionation patterns to Cd in the same plant-soil system with heavy Cd isotope enrichment in S. plumbizincicola (Δ114/110Cdshoot-extract = 0.02-0.17‰) and in the NH4OAc-extractable pool after repeated phytoextraction (Δ114/110Cdextract: P5-P0 = 0.07-0.18‰). This indicates different mechanisms of membrane transport (high-affinity transport of Cd) and supplementation of the bioavailable pool in soil (Cd supplied mainly through complexation with root-derived organic ligands) of the two metals. The combination of chemical speciation and stable Zn isotope ratios in the plant and the bioavailable soil pool reveal that the Zn pool related to Fe and Mn oxides became increasingly bioavailable with increasing crop generations. Capsule: Stable isotope analysis indicates that soil Fe- and Mn-oxide bound Zn replenishment boosted Zn uptake by the hyperaccumulator Sedum plumbizincicola during long-term remediation.

Plant growth-promoting yeasts are often over looked as a mechanism to improve phytoremediation of heavy metals. In this study, Cryptococcus sp. NSE1, a Cd-tolerant yeast with plant growth capabilities, was isolated from the rhizosphere of the heavy metal hyperaccumulator Sedum plumbizincicola. The yeast exhibited strong tolerance to a range of heavy metals including Cd, Cu, and Zn on plate assays. The adsorption rate Cd, Cu, Zn by NSE1 was 26.1, 13.2, and 25.2 %, respectively. Irregular spines were formed on the surface of NSE1 when grown in MSM medium supplemented with 200 mg L(-1) Cd. NSE1 was capable of utilizing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) as a sole nitrogen source and was capable of solubilization of inorganic phosphate at rates of 195.2 mg L(-1). Field experiments demonstrated that NSE1 increased phytoremediation by increasing the biomass of Cd hyperaccumulator S. plumbizincicola (46 %, p < 0.05) during phytoremediation. Overall, Cd accumulation by S. plumbizincicola was increased from 19.6 to 31.1 mg m(-2) though no difference in the concentration of Cd in the shoot biomass was observed between NSE1 and control. A Cd accumulation ratio of 38.0 % for NSE1 and 17.2 % for control was observed. The HCl-extractable Cd and CaCl2-extractable Cd concentration in the soil of the NSE1 treatment were reduced by 39.2 and 29.5 %, respectively. Community-level physiology profiling, assessed using Biolog Eco plates, indicated functional changes to the rhizosphere community inoculated with NSE1 by average well color development (AWCD) and measurement of richness (diversity). Values of Shannon-Weiner index, Simpson index, and McIntosh index showed a slight but no significant increases. These results indicate that inoculation of NSE1 could increase the shoot biomass of S. plumbizincicola, enhance the Cd accumulation in S. plumbizincicola, and decrease the available heavy metal content in soils significantly without overall significant changes to the microbial community.

The selenium (Se) content in human hair is useful as an indicator of human Se intake and status. In this regard, when measuring the hair Se concentrations in Chinese inhabitants across northeast to southeast China, the results indicated that generally 84% of all residents have normal hair Se content. Between the sexes, the average hair Se content of males was higher than that of females, irrespective of districts. When comparing geographical regions, the average hair Se content of southern residents was greater than that of northern residents, regardless of gender. Historically, the overall hair Se content of today's inhabitants decreased between 24% and 46% when compared with the inhabitants living in the same geographic region 20 years ago. The decrease of hair Se content may be related to the overall decrease of grain consumption and the lower Se content in the staple food rice.

Experiments were conducted to investigate and control pollutant emission from incineration of Sedum plumbizincicola plants on a laboratory scale using an entrained flow tube furnace. Without control technologies, the flue gas contained 0.101 mg Nm(-3) of Cd, 46.4 mg Nm(-3) of Zn, 553 mg Nm(-3) of NOx, 131 pg Nm(-3) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/Fs) and 35.4 mg Nm(-3) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In pollutants control experiments. Al2O3, CaO, and kaolin were compared as adsorbents and activated carbon was used as an end-of-pipe method for the capture of pollutants. Kaolin, the most effective of the three adsorbents, removed 91.2% of the Cd in flue gas. While 97.6% of the Cd and 99.6% of the PAHs were removed by activated carbon. Incineration may therefore be regarded as a viable option for the safe disposal of the biomass of the zinc and cadmium hyperaccumulator species S. plumbizincicola.

Over 100 biosurfactant-producing microorganisms were isolated from oily sludge and petroleum-contaminated soil from Shengli oil field in north China. Sixteen of the bacterial isolates produced biosurfactants and reduced the surface tension of the growth medium from 71 to <30 mN m(-1) after 72 h of growth. These bacteria were used to treat oily sludge and the recovery efficiencies of oil from oily sludge were determined. The oil recovery efficiencies of different isolates ranged from 39% to 88%. Bacterial isolate BZ-6 was found to be the most efficient strain and the three phases (oil, water and sediment) were separated automatically after the sludge was treated with the culture medium of BZ-6. Based on morphological, physiological characteristics and molecular identification, isolate BZ-6 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. The biosurfactant produced by isolate BZ-6 was purified and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. There were four ion peaks representing four different fengycin A homologues.
