This study investigated the effect of varying magnetic field intensities (ranging from 0 to 10 mT) on the quality characteristics of dough with 40 % potato pulp substitution (DPP). The results indicated that the DPP fermented with a 4 mT magnetic field exhibited a significant enhancement in the combination of water and substrate, thereby elevating the viscoelastic properties of DPP through reinforcing the stability of gluten network. Meanwhile, DPP treated with a 4 mT magnetic field exhibited the highest amount of disulfide bonds (11.64 µmol SS/g sample). This is accompanied by a prominent cross-linkage structure, as evidenced by SDS-PAGE and CLSM. Notably, the application of a magnetic field substantially augments the dough's capacity to retain gas during fermentation. In addition, the application of magnetic field significantly increased the wet gluten content (20.85 %, P < 0.05) in DPP, which improved tensile properties and an acceptable color profile. The introduction of a magnetic field induces gluten aggregation, which in turn results in heightened particle size distribution and ζ-potential values. In conclusion, this study emphasize the potential of magnetic field technology as a viable method to enhance the overall quality attributes of dough enriched with potato pulp substitution.

Bioretention systems are one of the most widely used stormwater control measures for urban runoff treatment. However, stable and effective dissolved nutrient treatment by bioretention systems is often challenged by complicated stormwater conditions. In this study, pyrite-only (PO), pyrite-biochar (PB), pyrite-woodchip (PW), and pyrite-woodchip-biochar mixed (M) bioretention systems were established to study the feasibility of improving both stability and efficiency in bioretention system via multi-media interaction. PB, PW, and M all showed enhanced dissolved nitrogen and/or phosphorus removal compared to PO, with M demonstrating the highest efficiency and stability under different antecedent drying durations (ADD), pollutant levels, and prolonged precipitation depth. The total dissolved nitrogen and dissolved phosphorus removal in M ranged between 64%-86% and 80%-95%, respectively, with limited organic matter and iron leaching. Pore water, microbial community, and material analysis collectively indicate that pyrite, woodchip, and biochar synergistically facilitated multiple nutrient treatment processes and protected each other against by-product leaching. Pyrite-woodchip interaction greatly increased nitrate removal by facilitating mixotrophic denitrification, while biochar further enhanced ammonium adsorption and expanded the denitrification area. The Fe3+ generated by pyrite aerobic oxidation was adsorbed on the biochar surface and potentially formed a Fe-biochar composite layer, which not only reduced Fe3+-induced pyrite excessive oxidation but also potentially increased organic matter adsorption. Fe (oxyhydr)oxides intermediate product formed by pyrite oxidation, in return, controlled the phosphorus and organic matter leaching from biochar and woodchip. Overall, this study demonstrates that multi-media interaction may enable bioretention systems to achieve stable and effective urban runoff treatment.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) is a prevalent and severe issue among ICU patients. Resistance training and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) intervention have demonstrated the potential to enhance muscle function in patients with sarcopenia and in older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine whether resistance training and/or HMB administration would improve physical function, muscle strength, and quality of life in medical ICU patients. METHODS: In this multicentre, four-arm, single-blind randomised control trial, a total of 112 adult patients with internal medical diagnoses admitted to the ICU were enrolled. These participants were then randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: the resistance training group received protocol-based multilevel resistance exercise, the HMB group received 3 g/day of HMBCa, combination group and control groups received standard care, from the ICU to the general ward until discharge. The primary outcomes assessed at discharge included six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and short physical performance battery (SPPB). Secondary outcomes measured included muscle mass, MRC score, grip strength, and health reports quality of life at different time points. Data analysis was performed using a generalised linear mixed model, adhering to the principles of intention-to-treat analysis. RESULTS: Resistance training and combination treatment groups exhibited significant increases in SPPB scores (3.848 and 2.832 points, respectively) compared to the control group and substantial improvements in 6WMD (99.768 and 88.577 m, respectively) (all with P < 0.01). However, no significant changes were observed in the HMB group. Muscle strength, as indicated by MRC and grip strength tests conducted at both ICU and hospital discharge, showed statistically significant improvements in the resistance training and combination groups (P < 0.05). Nevertheless, no significant differences were found between the treatment groups and usual care in terms of 60-day mortality, prevalence of ICU-AW, muscle mass, quality of life, or other functional aspects. CONCLUSIONS: Resistance training with or without beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate during the entire hospitalisation intervention improves physical function and muscle strength in medical ICU patients, but muscle mass, quality of life, and 60-day mortality were unaffected. Ovalbumin (OVA) is a major allergen in hen eggs. Enzymolysis has been demonstrated as an efficient method for reducing OVA allergenicity. This study demonstrates that microwave pretreatment (MP) at 400 W for 20 s assisting bromelain enzymolysis further decreases the allergenicity of OVA, which was attributed to the increase in the degree of hydrolysis and promoted the destruction of IgE-binding epitopes. The results showed that MP could promote OVA unfolding, expose hydrophobic domains, and disrupt tightly packed α-helical structures and disulfide bonds, which increased the degree of hydrolysis by 7.28% and the contents of peptides below 1 kDa from 43.55 to 85.06% in hydrolysates compared with that for untreated OVA. Biological mass spectrometry demonstrated that the number of intact IgE-binding epitope peptides in MP-assisted OVA hydrolysates decreased by 533 compared to that in hydrolysis without MP; consequently, their IgG/IgE binding rates decreased more significantly. Therefore, MP-assisted enzymolysis may provide an alternative method for decreasing the OVA allergenicity.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of moxibustion on the indicators of autophagy and apoptosis in the synovium of toes of rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA), so as to explore the underlying mechanism of moxibustion in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Forty-five SD rats were randomly divided into the blank control group, model group, moxibustion group, methotrexate group and rapamycin group, with 9 rats in each group. The rat model of AA was established by injecting Freund's complete adjuvant. Rats in the moxibustion group received moxibustion treatment at "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Guanyuan" (CV4) for 20 min, once a day. The methotrexate group was given methotrexate intragastrically (0.35 mg/kg) twice a week. The rapamycin group was given rapamycin by intraperitoneal injection (1 mg/kg), once every other day. The toe volume of the left hind limb was measured by the toe volume measuring instrument after 3-day modeling and 3-week intervention respectively. The contents of interlukin(IL)-1 and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α in serum were detected by ELISA. The autophagosomes of synovial cells of the toe joint were observed under transmission electron microscope. The expressions of mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)C1, p-mTORC1, Caspase-3, Fas and FasL in synovial tissue were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Under transmission electron microscope, the model group showed decreased autophagosomes in synovial tissues, but the moxibustion, methotrexate, and rapamycin groups showed increased autophagosomes. Compared with the blank control group, the toe volume, the contents of IL-1 and TNF-α in serum and the expression of p-mTORC1 protein in synovial tissue were significantly increased (P<0.01, P<0.001), while the expressions of Caspase-3, Fas and FasL proteins in synovial tissue were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, the toe volume, the contents of IL-1 and TNF-α in the serum, and expression of p-mTORC1 protein were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001) in the moxibustion group and the methotrexate group, while the expression of Caspase-3, Fas and FasL proteins in synovial tissue in the moxibustion group and the methotrexate group, the expression of Caspase-3 in the rapamycin group were significantly increased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion can improve joint swelling in AA rats and decrease the contents of serum IL-1 and TNF-α. The mechanism may be related to regulating the expressions of p-mTORC1, Caspase-3, Fas and FasL proteins, and promoting autophagy and apoptosis of synovial cells.

This study aims to explore the anti-depression mechanism of Zuojin Pills based on the plasma constituents, network pharmacology, and experimental verification. UHPLC-TOF-MS was used for qualitative analysis of Zuojin Pills-containing serum. Targets of the plasma constituents and the disease were retrieved from PharmMapper and GeneCards. Then the protein-protein interaction(PPI) network was constructed and core targets were screened for GO term enrichment and KEGG pathway enrichment. Cytoscape 3.7.2 was employed construct the "compound-target-pathway" network and the targets and signaling pathways of Zuojin Pills against depression were predicted. CUMS-induced depression mouse model was established to verify the key targets. The results showed that a total of 21 constituents migrating to blood of Zuojin Pills were identified, which were mainly alkaloids. A total of 155 common targets of the constituents and the disease and 67 core targets were screened out. KEGG enrichment and PPI network analysis showed that Zuojin Pills may play a role in the treatment of depression through AMPK/SIRT1, NLRP3, insulin and other targets and pathways. Furthermore, the results of animal experiments showed that Zuojin Pills could significantly improve the depression behaviors of depression, reduce the levels of IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α in hippocampus and serum, activate AMPK/SIRT1 signaling, and reduce the protein expression of NLRP3. In conclusion, Zuojin Pills may play a role in the treatment of depression by activating AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway, and inhibiting NLRP3 activation and neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of mice.

Physicochemical properties and microstructure of gluten protein, and the structural characteristics of steamed bread with 30 % potato pulp (SBPP) were investigated by ultrasonic treatments. Results showed that 400 W ultrasonic treatment significantly (P < 0.05) increased the combination of water and substrate in the dough with 30 % potato pulp (DPP). The contents of wet gluten, free sulfhydryl (SH), and disulfide bond (SS) were influenced by ultrasonic treatment. Moreover, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrated that the conformation of gluten protein was changed by ultrasonic treatment (400 W). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) illustrated that the ß-sheet content was significantly (P < 0.05) increased (42 %) after 400 W ultrasonic treatment, and the surface hydrophobicity of gluten protein in SBPP increased from 1225.37 (0 W ultrasonic treatment) to 4588.74 (400 W ultrasonic treatment). Ultrasonic treatment facilitated the generation of a continuous gluten network and stabilized crumb structure, further increased the specific volume and springiness of SBPP to 18.9 % and 6.9 %, respectively. Those findings suggested that ultrasonic treatment would be an efficient method to modify gluten protein and improve the quality of SBPP.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of moxibustion on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/UNC-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) signaling pathway in the synovial tissue of toes in rheumatoid arthritis rats, so as to explore the mechanism of mo-xibustion in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: A total of 45 SD rats were randomly divided into blank, model, moxibustion, methotrexate and rapamycin groups, with 9 rats in each group. RA rat model was established by injection of Freund's complete adjuvant. Moxibustion was applied to "Zusanli" (ST36) and "Guanyuan" (CV4) for 20 min, once a day for 3 weeks. Methotrexate group was given methotrexate (0.35 mg/kg) by gavage, twice a week for 3 weeks. Rapamycin group was intraperitoneally injected with rapamycin (1 mg/kg),once every other day for 3 weeks. The toe volume of the left hind limb of rats was measured by the toe volume measuring instrument. The content of AMP in toe synovium was detected by ELISA. The expression of AMPK and VPS34 protein in toe synovium was detected by Western blot.The expression of ULK1 and Atg13 mRNA in toe synovium was detected by RT-PCR. RESULTS: Compared with the blank group, the volume of toe in the model group was increased (P<0.01),while the content of AMP, the expression of AMPK and VPS34 proteins, the expression of ULK1 and Atg13 mRNAs were significantly decreased(P<0.01).Compared with the model group, the volume of toe in the moxibustion,methotre-xate and rapamycin groups was decreased (P<0.05); the content of AMP, the expression of AMPK and VPS34 proteins, the expression of ULK1 and Atg13 mRNAs were significantly increased(P<0.05) in the moxibustion group; the content of AMP, the expression of VPS34 protein, the expression of Atg13 mRNA were significantly increased(P<0.05) in the methotrexate group; the expression of AMPK and VPS34 proteins, the expression of ULK1 and Atg13 mRNAs were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the rapamycin group. Compared with the moxibustion group, the expression of AMPK protein in the methotrexate group and the content of AMP in the rapamycin group were significantly decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Moxibustion can improve joint swelling in RA rats, and the mechanism may be related to promoting the activity of AMPK/ULK1 signaling pathway.

The physicochemical properties and multiple bioactive effects of ginseng oligopeptides (GOPs), plant-derived small molecule bioactive peptides, suggest a positive influence on health span and longevity. Given this, cellular senescence is the initiating factor and key mechanism of aging in the organism, and thus the current study sought to explore the effects of GOPs on H2O2-induced cellular senescence and its potential mechanisms. Senescence was induced in mouse embryonic fibroblasts NIH/3T3 by 4 h of exposure to 200 µM H2O2 and confirmed using CCK-8 assay and Western blot analyses of p16INK4A and p21Waf1/Cip1 after 24 h of growth medium administration with or without GOPs supplementation (25, 50, and 100 µg/mL). We found that GOPs delayed oxidative stress-induced NIH/3T3 senescence by inhibiting the G1 phase arrest, increasing DNA synthesis in the S phase, decreasing the relative protein expression of p16INK4A and p21Waf1/Cip1, promoting cell viability, protecting DNA, and enhancing telomerase (TE) activity. Further investigation revealed that the increase in antioxidative capacity and anti-inflammation capacity might form the basis for the retarding of the senescence effects of GOPs. Furthermore, GOPs supplementation significantly improved mitochondrial function and mitochondrial biogenesis via the NAD+/SIRT1/PGC-1𝛼 pathway. These findings indicate that GOPs may have a positive effect on health span and lifespan extension via combating cellular senescence, oxidative stress, and inflammation, as well as modulating longevity regulating pathway NAD+/SIRT1/PGC-1𝛼.

Aspongopus chinensis Dallas is used as a traditional Chinese medicine as well as an edible insect. Although its anti-tumor effects have been observed, the anti-tumor active component(s) in the hemolymph of A. chinensis remains unknown. In this study, a combination usage of ultrafiltration, gel filtration chromatography, FPLC and RP-HPLC to separate and purify active peptides was performed based on the proliferation of the human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cell line treated with candidates. One peptide (MW = 2853.3 Da) was isolated from the hemolymph of A. chinensis. A total of 24 amino acid residues were continuously determined for the active peptide: N'-ECGYCAEKGIRCDDIHCCTGLKKK-C'. In conclusion, a peptide that can inhibit the proliferation of gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells in the hemolymph of A. chinensis was purified in this study, which is homologous to members of the spider toxin protein family. These results should facilitate further works for this peptide, such as the cloning of genes, expression in vitro by prokaryotic or eukaryotic systems, more specific tests of anti-tumor activity, and so on.

AP-1 and AP-2 adaptor protein (AP) complexes mediate clathrin-dependent trafficking at the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and the plasma membrane, respectively. Whereas AP-1 is required for trafficking to plasma membrane and vacuoles, AP-2 mediates endocytosis. These AP complexes consist of four subunits (adaptins): two large subunits (ß1 and γ for AP-1 and ß2 and α for AP-2), a medium subunit µ, and a small subunit σ. In general, adaptins are unique to each AP complex, with the exception of ß subunits that are shared by AP-1 and AP-2 in some invertebrates. Here, we show that the two putative Arabidopsis thaliana AP1/2ß adaptins co-assemble with both AP-1 and AP-2 subunits and regulate exocytosis and endocytosis in root cells, consistent with their dual localization at the TGN and plasma membrane. Deletion of both ß adaptins is lethal in plants. We identified a critical role of ß adaptins in pollen wall formation and reproduction, involving the regulation of membrane trafficking in the tapetum and pollen germination. In tapetal cells, ß adaptins localize almost exclusively to the TGN and mediate exocytosis of the plasma membrane transporters such as ATP-binding cassette (ABC)G9 and ABCG16. This study highlights the essential role of AP1/2ß adaptins in plants and their specialized roles in specific cell types.

Primexine deposition is essential for the formation of pollen wall patterns and is precisely regulated by the tapetum and microspores. While tapetum- and/or microspore-localized proteins are required for primexine biosynthesis, how their trafficking is established and controlled is poorly understood. In Arabidopsis thaliana, AP1σ1 and AP1σ2, two genes encoding the σ subunit of the trans-Golgi network/early endosome (TGN/EE)-localized ADAPTOR PROTEIN-1 complex (AP-1), are partially redundant for plant viability, and the loss of AP1σ1 function reduces male fertility due to defective primexine formation. Here, we investigated the role of AP-1 in pollen wall formation. The deposition of Acyl-CoA SYNTHETASE5 (ACOS5) and type III LIPID TRANSFER PROTEINs (LTPs) secreted from the anther tapetum, which are involved in exine formation, were impaired in ap1σ1 mutants. In addition, the microspore plasma membrane (PM) protein RUPTURED POLLEN GRAIN1 (RPG1), which regulates primexine deposition, accumulated abnormally at the TGN/EE in ap1σ1 mutants. We show that AP-1µ recognizes the YXXΦ motif of RPG1, thereby regulating its PM abundance through endocytic trafficking, and that loss of AP1σ1 decreases the levels of other AP-1 subunits at the TGN/EE. Our observations show that AP-1-mediated post-Golgi trafficking plays a vital role in pollen wall development by regulating protein transport in tapetal cells and microspores.

This paper aims to study the effect of Xiangqin Jiere Granules(XQ) on lipid metabolism and chronic inflammation in different obesity model mice. The monosodium glutamate(MSG) obese mouse model was established by subcutaneous injection of MSG in newborn mice, and the high fat diet(HFD) obese mouse model was established by feeding adult mice with HFD. The normal mice were assigned into the control group; the MSG obese mice were assigned into MSG model group, XQ4.5 group(Xiangqin Jiere Granu-les, 4.5 g·kg~(-1)), XQ22.5 group(Xiangqin Jiere Granules, 22.5 g·kg~(-1)); the HFD obese mice were assigned into HFD model group, XQ4.5 group, and XQ22.5 group. The mice were intragastrically administrated with saline or XQ for 5 weeks. After that, the body weight, visceral fat mass, liver and thymus weight, and the organ indexes in each group were measured. The levels of triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol(TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-c) in serum and liver tissue were detected by the kits. The mRNA expression levels of acetyl CoA carboxylase 1(ACC1), fatty acid synthetase(FAS), diacylgycerol acyltransferase 1(DGAT1) and hepatic lipase(HTGL) involved in lipid metabolism in mouse liver tissue were detected by quantitative real-time PCR(qPCR). The protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in serum were detected by ELISA, and the mRNA levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in liver tissue were detected by qPCR. Compared with the control group, MSG and HFD mice showed increased body weight, abdominal circumference, Lee index and visceral fat mass as well as elevated levels of TG, TC, and LDL-c in serum. The model mice had up-regulated gene levels of ACC1, FAS and DGAT1 while down-regulated gene level of HTGL in the liver. Furthermore, the mRNA and protein levels of IL-6 increased in the model mice. Compared with the model mice, XQ treatment decreased the body weight, abdominal circumference, Lee index, and visceral fat mass, lowered the levels of TG, TC, and LDL-c in se-rum, down-regulated the gene levels of ACC1, FAS, and DGAT1 in liver tissue, up-regulated the gene level of HTGL, and down-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of IL-6. To sum up, XQ has good therapeutic effect on different obesity model mice. It can improve lipid metabolism and reduce fat accumulation in obese mice by regulating the enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, and alleviate obesity-related chronic low-grade inflammation.

Pollen longevity is critical for plant pollination and hybrid seed production, but few studies have focused on pollen longevity. In this study, we identified an Arabidopsis thaliana gene, Protein associated with lipid droplets (PALD), which is strongly expressed in pollen and critical for the regulation of pollen longevity. PALD was expressed specifically in mature pollen grains and the pollen tube, and its expression was upregulated under dry conditions. PALD encoded a lipid droplet (LD)-associated protein and its N terminus was critical for the LD localization of PALD. The number of LDs and diameter were reduced in pollen grains of the loss-of-function PALD mutants. The viability and germination of the mature pollen grains of the pald mutants were comparable with those of the wild-type, but after the pollen grains were stored under dry conditions, pollen germination and male transmission of the mutant were compromised compared with those of the wild-type. Our study suggests that PALD was required for the maintenance of LD quality in mature pollen grains and regulation of pollen longevity.

Sanwei-Tanxiang powder (SWTX), a traditional Mongolian and Tibetan medicine containing a cocktail of active molecules, relieves angina pectoris and improves recovery in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). The pharmacological effect of SWTX on CHD was analyzed at a systemic point of view in our previous studies. The bioinformatics prediction showed that the PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a pathway was one of important pathways of SWTX on treatment of coronary heart disease. Based on it, the aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits of SWTX in acute myocardial ischemic-reperfused (MIR) rat in vivo and H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells under oxidative stress induced by H2O2 in vitro, and further investigate the involvement of PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a pathway in these processes. Ex vivo, under physiological conditions, SWTX did not show any modification in the heart rate and contraction amplitude. However, against a MIR injury, SWTX pretreatment provided significant protection, including reduced ST-segment elevation, pathological changes and myocardial infarct size in vivo, meanwhile, some monomers of SWTX showed antioxidant capacity and inhibited cardiomyocytic apoptosis in vitro. The effect was correlated with the activation of the PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a signaling pathway downstream and the regulation of downstream pro-apoptotic Bim of FoxO3a experimental verified by qRT-PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescent assay. In vitro, blocking Akt and p-FoxO3a activation with the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 effectively suppressed the protective effects of several active monomers (including quercetin, macelignan,methyleugenol and Santol) of SWTX against H2O2-induced injury. Collectively, these results suggest that SWTX decreases I/R injury, and the PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a pathway takes part in protection during this process, gallogen (G3) and quercetin (G8) of GZ, methyleugenol (R2) and macelignan (R7) of RDK, santol (T1) of TX are responsible at least in part for SWTX's cardioprotection effect.

The root of Codonopis bulleynana Forest ex Diels (cbFeD), a tonic food widely used in Yunnan Province of China, was found to have a wide range of pharmacological effects. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-fibrotic effect of water extracts of cbFeD in chronic liver injury mice model induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and to explore its underlying mechanisms. Phytochemical analysis revealed multiple components were present in the water extract of cbFeD and the compounds were mostly enriched in organic acid and its derivatives, flavone, amino acid derivatives, nucleotide and its derivatives, carbohydrates etc. Treatment with cbFeD significantly attenuated liver injury and fibrosis in CCl4-administered mice evidenced by improved liver histology, ameliorated apoptosis of hepatocytes, and decreased transaminase levels in the serum. Decreased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were markedly reversed upon treatment with cbFeD while levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) were significantly restored towards normal values. cbFeD also suppressed intrahepatic inflammatory cell infiltration and Kupffer cell activation. Furthermore, our study revealed an inhibitory effect of cbFeD on hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation both in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, cbFeD could exert a protective role against liver fibrosis in mice model induced by CCl4 that is comparable to the positive control silymarin and might be developed into a promising anti-fibrotic drug.

Objective:To explore the effects of Tiaoren Tongdu Acupuncture on motor function and corticospinal tract (CST) remodeling after cerebral infarction. Methods:From February, 2017 to December, 2020, 54 patients with cerebral infarction were randomly divided into control group (n = 27) and acupuncture group (n = 27), each group was divided into subgroups 1, 2 and 3 according to the impairment of corticospinal tract, with nine cases for each subgroup. All the patients received routine medicine, while the acupuncture group received Tiaoren Tongdu Acupuncture, for four weeks. They were assessed with Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and modified Barthel Index (MBI) before and after treatment, and scanned with diffusion tensor imaging and diffusion tensor tractography, to obtain the fractional anisotropy (FA) and the bilateral FA ratio (rFA). Results:The scores of FMA and MBI, and FA and rFA increased in both groups (t > 2.841, P < 0.05) after treatment, and increased more in the acupuncture group than in the control group (t > 2.140, P < 0.05). Conclusion:Tiaoren Tongdu Acupuncture can promote the recovery of CST to improve motor function for patients with cerebral infarction.

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of Meibomian Thermal Pulsation LipiFlow® on obstructive and hyposecretory meibomian gland dysfunction. METHODS: Twenty-five subjects diagnosed with obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction (OMGD) and another 25 hyposecretory meibomian gland dysfunction (HMGD) patients were collected receiving the unilateral treatment with LipiFlow®. We evaluated the parameters variables including Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer I test (SIT), noninvasive keratographic breakup time (NIKBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), and lipid layer thickness (LLT), partial blink rate (PBR), meibomian gland loss, meibomian gland morphology with LipiView®. Meibomian gland expressibility and secretion quality were evaluated for OMGD subjects. All the results were recorded pre-therapy and 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks post-therapy. RESULTS: SPEED, OSDI, and PB decreased, meanwhile, NIKBUT, TMH, SIT, and LLT increased compared with baseline in both groups after treatment (P < 0.001), whereas the magnitude of the improvement in the OMGD group was greater than that in the HMGD group (P < 0.001). There was no significant posttreatment structural meibomian gland change in both groups. The meibomian gland expressibility and secretion quality score increased after treatment in the OMGD group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The Meibomian Thermal Pulsation LipiFlow® is effective for both obstructive and hyposecretory meibomian gland dysfunction and the therapeutic effect on obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction is greater than that on hyposecretory meibomian gland dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated the relationship between chronic cough and clinicopathological features in postoperative patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy for the treatment of postoperative chronic cough in patients with NSCLC. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 171 patients with NSCLC who received lobectomy at our center between September 2017 and February 2018. The Mandarin Chinese version of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ-MC) was used to evaluate the degree of cough in patients. Postoperative cough was assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: The total LCQ-MC score for the whole group was 19.79 ± 0.53 before surgery and 18.40 ± 0.70 after surgery (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that right lung cancer, difficult airway, acute cough and history of COPD were independent predictors of chronic cough. Of the 68 patients diagnosed with chronic cough, 41 received acupuncture therapy (acupuncture therapy group), and 27 received no acupuncture therapy (no therapy group). No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of their LCQ-MC scores at eight weeks after surgery (p = 0.756). However, the acupuncture therapy group had a significantly higher LCQ-MC score than the no therapy group at 10 weeks after surgery (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Right lung cancer, difficult airway, acute cough, and history of COPD are independent predictors of chronic cough after surgery. For patients with chronic cough, acupuncture therapy can shorten the recovery time and improve quality of life after surgery.

Isoalantolactone (ISO) is a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from Inula helenium that has been known to exhibit anti-inflammatory effect. Nevertheless, the effects of ISO on neuroinflammation have not been explored. BV2 microglia cells were pretreated with ISO and then stimulated with LPS. ISO attenuated the production of inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, NO, and PGE2 in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia cells. ISO suppressed the LPS-induced NF-κB activation in a concentration-dependent manner. The expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 were increased by the treatment of ISO. Inhibition of Nrf2 by siRNA could reverse the anti-inflammatory effects of ISO, as confirmed by the reversed inflammatory mediator production. Furthermore, ISO increased the level of phosphorylated GSK-3ß, the upstream molecule of Nrf2. In conclusion, these results indicated that ISO might exhibit its anti-inflammatory effects through activating GSK-3ß-Nrf2 signaling pathway.
