OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of tea polyphenols (TP) for regulating NLRP3 inflammasomes and alleviating acute lung injury in septic mice. METHODS: Sixty C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned into sham-operated, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and CLP +TP treatment groups, and survival of the mice was recorded after modeling in each group. The lung wet/dry weight ratio and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were determined, and lung injury of the mice was evaluated using HE staining and acute lung injury score. The expressions of IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-6, NLRP3, caspase-1 p10, ASC, MPO, and caspase-8 in the lung tissue were detected using ELISA, Western blotting, or immunohistochemical staining. MDA and H2O2 levels in the lungs were detected to evaluate the level of oxidative stress. Immunofluorescence assay was used to investigate the co-localization of NLRP3 and NOX4. RESULTS: The postoperative mortality rate at 72 h, lung wet/dry weight ratio, MPO level and acute lung injury scores were significantly lower in CLP+TP group than in CLP group (P < 0.05). Treatment with TP significantly reduced the expressions of NLRP3-related inflammatory factors (P < 0.05) and lowered MDA and H2O2 levels in the lung tissue of the septic mice (P < 0.05). Immunofluorescence co-staining showed a lower level of NOX4 and NLRP3 co-localization in CLP+TP group than in CLP group. CONCLUSION: TP inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome-associated inflammation to alleviate CLP-induced acute lung injury in mice through a regulatory mechanism that inhibits NOX4 expression and reduces oxidative stress in the lung tissue.

Our understanding of metabolic alterations triggered by heat stress is incomplete, which limits the designing of nutritional strategies to mitigate negative productive and health effects. Thus, this study aimed to explore the metabolic responses of heat-stressed dairy cows to dietary supplementation with vitamin D3/Ca and vitamin E/Se. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows were enrolled in a split-plot Latin square design with two distinct vitamin E/Se supplementation levels, either at a low (ESe-, n = 6, 11.1 IU/kg vitamin E and 0.55 mg/kg Se) or a high dose (ESe+, n = 6 223 IU/kg vitamin E and 1.8 mg/kg Se) as the main plot. Treatment subplots, arranged in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design, comprised heat challenge (Temperature Humidity Index, THI: 72.0-82.0) supplemented with different levels of vitamin D3/Ca: either low (HS/DCa-, 1 012 IU/kg and 0.73%, respectively) or high (HS/DCa+, 3 764 IU/kg and 0.97%, respectively), and a pair-fed control group in thermoneutrality (THI = 61.0-64.0) receiving the low dose of vitamin D3/Ca (TN). The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolome profile was determined in blood plasma and milk sampled at the beginning (day 0) and end (day 14) of each experimental period. The results were analyzed for the effect of (1) TN vs. HS/ESe-/DCa-, and (2) the vitamin E/Se and vitamin D3/Ca supplementation. No group or group × day effects were detected in the plasma metabolome (false discovery rate, FDR > 0.05), except for triglyceride 52:2 being higher (FDR = 0.03) on day 0 than 14. Taurine, creatinine and butyryl-carnitine showed group × day interactions in the milk metabolome (FDR ≤ 0.05) as creatinine (+22%) and butyryl-carnitine (+190%) were increased (P < 0.01) on day 14, and taurine was decreased (-65%, P < 0.01) on day 14 in the heat stress (HS) cows, compared with day 0. Most compounds were unaffected by vitamin E/Se or vitamin D3/Ca supplementation level or their interaction (FDR > 0.05) in plasma and milk, except for milk alanine which was lower (-69%, FDR = 0.03) in the E/Se+ groups, compared with E/Se-. Our results indicated that HS triggered more prominent changes in the milk than in the plasma metabolome, with consistent results in milk suggesting increased muscle catabolism, as reflected by increased creatinine, alanine and citrulline levels. Supplementing with high levels of vitamin E/Se or vitamin D3/Ca or their combination did not appear to affect the metabolic remodeling triggered by HS.

Immune homeostasis is a steady immune state that not only protects the host from pathogens but also prevents the emergence of pathological self-reactive immune cells. The disruption of immune homeostasis leads to the development of various diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. An emerging paradigm for the treatment of these diseases with dysfunctional immune systems is the restoration and maintenance of immune homeostasis. However, currently available drugs exert a unidirectional influence on immunity whereby they either augment or inhibit it. This strategy is associated with the drawback of potential adverse effects arising from uncontrolled activation or suppression of the immune system. Fortunately, evidence suggests that acupuncture can bidirectionally regulate the immune system to maintain immune homeostasis. In cases of immunosuppressive diseases (e.g. cancer), acupuncture has an enhancing effect on immunity. Conversely, in autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), acupuncture has been observed to have an immunosuppressive effect, which helps restore normal immune tolerance. However, there is no publication systematically summarizing the bidirectional regulatory effects of acupuncture on the immune system in the literature. Here, our review provides a comprehensive overview of the various mechanisms through which acupuncture modulates the immune system in a bidirectional manner. These mechanisms include the augmentation of NK and CD8+ T cell function, as well as the restoration of Th1/Th2, Th17/Treg and M1/M2 balance. Thus, we propose the concept that acupuncture has the potential to alleviate illnesses through the facilitation of immune normalization. Moreover, we further highlight the therapeutic potential of acupuncture.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this 8-year follow-up study was to investigate the relationship between magnesium intake and frailty, as well as recurrent falls, in individuals diagnosed with Osteoarthritis (OA) or those at a heightened risk for developing the condition. METHODS: This study utilized data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) database and conducted a prospective cohort study with a 8-year follow-up period. Total magnesium intake from both food sources and supplements was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), while frailty and recurrent falls were evaluated through established criteria and self-report, respectively. To account for potential confounding factors, various covariates were considered, and statistical analyses, including generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs), were employed to examine the associations. RESULTS: Among the 4,667 participants with OA, those with lower total magnesium intake were characterized by younger age, a higher proportion of African American individuals, higher body mass index (BMI), and lower dietary fiber intake (P<0.001). Notably, this group exhibited higher odds of experiencing recurrent falls and frailty (P = 0.034 and 0.006, respectively). Controlling for various factors, the GAMMs consistently revealed negative correlations between magnesium intake and the likelihood of frailty and recurrent falls, with each 1 mg/1000 kcal increase in magnesium intake associated with a 0.5% reduced frailty risk (p < 0.001) and a 0.2% decreased risk of recurrent falls (p = 0.001). Subgroup analyses suggested that increased total magnesium intake from both food sources and supplements may exert a more pronounced preventive effect on recurrent falls and frailty in men, older adults, individuals with normal BMI, and those with higher dietary fiber intake. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated total magnesium intake from both food sources and supplements was found to be associated with a decreased risk of recurrent falls and frailty in individuals diagnosed with OA or those at risk of developing the condition. These findings imply that increased total magnesium intake might be beneficial in managing the risk of these outcomes, particularly within specific subgroups, including men, older adults, those with a normal BMI, and those with higher dietary fiber intake.

We prospectively studied 17 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax or giant emphysematous bulla at Rizhao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from October 2020 to March 2022. All patients underwent thoracoscopic interventional therapy, had experienced continued air leakage for 3 days with closed thoracic drainage postoperatively, had an unexpanded lung on CT, and/or failed to intervention with position selection combined with intra-pleural thrombin injection(referred to as "position plus1.0"). They were all treated with position selection combined with autologous blood (100 ml) and thrombin (5 000 U) intra-pleural injection(referred to as "position plus 2.0").The success rate of the "position plus 2.0" intervention was 16/17, and the recurrence rate was 3/17. There were four cases of fever, four cases of pleural effusion, one case of empyema, and no other adverse reactions. This study has shown that the "position plus 2.0" intervention is safe, effective, and simple for patient with persistent air leakage failed to intervention with"position plus 1.0" after thoracoscopic treatment of pulmonary and pleural diseases related to bulla.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a new treatment protocol that combined "medical glue assisted argon plasma coagulation"(hereinafter called "APC plus") and "giant emphysematous bulla volume reduction"(hereinafter called "one thoracoscope plus one needle") via medical thoracoscopy on the spontaneous pneumothorax patients whose chest high resolution CT (HRCT) showed multiple subpleural bullae (SPB) and at least one SPB≥4 cm in diameter. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 46 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax with multiple SPB(at least one SPB≥4 cm in diameter), 42 males and 4 females, aged from 31 to 79 (68.5±10.3) years,from June 2018 to December 2021 in Rizhao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The time of air leakage discontinuance, the disappearance rate and reduction degree of target subpleural blebs one week after operation, the degree of reduction and the incidence of postoperative complications were observed. Two-year follow-up after operation was carried out to assess the recurrence rate and its short- and long-term complications. Results: Among the 46 patients, SPB disappeared or nearly disappeared in 39 cases (84.78%), decreased in number or reduced in volume in 5 cases (10.87%), and remained unchanged in 2 cases (4.35%) after the intervention of "APC Plus"; 40 patients stopped leaking within 1 week and 6 cases stopped leaking over a week. Eleven patients finished the 3-year follow-up, 13 finished 2-year follow-up and 6 finished 1-year follow-up, with only 1 relapse. No serious complications occurred in all these 46 patients. Conclusion: "APC plus" combining with "one thoracoscope plus one needle" is safe and effective in the treatment of pneumothorax patients with multiple subpleural bullae of varying sizes.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of giant emphysematous bulla (GEB) volume reduction via medical thoracoscope. Methods: This was a prospective, single-arm study conducted between July 2018 and September 2020 in Ri Zhao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were treated with GEB volume reduction via medical thoracoscope and were followed up to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the technique. According to comparison of preoperative and postoperative chest CT results, the self-designed evaluation criteria of imaging efficacy were as follows: complete or nearly complete disappearance of GEB (GEB volume reduction ≥90%), significant reduction of GEB (75%≤GEB volume reduction<90%), reduction of GEB (50%≤GEB volume reduction<75%) and no change (GEB volume reduction<50%). Results: A total of 47 patients were included, among whom 43 were males, with an age M (Q1, Q3) of 63.0 (55.0, 67.0). The CT results showed complete or nearly complete disappearance of GEB in 43 patients, significant reduction of GEB in 3 patients and reduction of GEB in 1 patient before discharge. The degree of dyspnea improved significantly (P<0.05). Arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) decreased from (48.2±8.4)mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) to (45.4±7.3)mmHg (P<0.05). The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) increased from (245.6±162.4)m to (283.5±152.2)m (P<0.05). Six-month postoperative follow-up was completed in 24 patients, and CT results showed that the efficacy of volume reduction was continuous compared with that before discharge. GEB was further reduced or even disappeared in 3 of the cases. Besides, the degree of dyspnea, 6MWT (384.4±148.2)m and PaCO2 (42.7±6.6)mmHg were improved significantly (P<0.05). The oxygenation index (356.86±61.21)mmHg was significantly higher than that before surgery (295.20±67.16)mmHg and before discharge (294.50±76.69)mmHg (P<0.05). No perioperative deaths occurred. Conclusions: GEB volume can be completely eliminated or significantly reduced by this innovative technique, while PaCO2, the degree of dyspnea and exercise endurance can be significantly improved after operation. The 6-month follow-up after surgery showed that the above benefits continued, and that the oxygenation index improved significantly.

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of position selection in combination with intra-pleural thrombin injection in the treatment of persistent air leakage (PAL) after medical thoracoscopic treatment of bullous pulmonary-pleural diseases (e.g. spontaneous pneumothorax or giant emphysematous bulla). Methods: This was a prospective study conducted in Rizhao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2018 to November 2020. Twenty patients(19 males,1 female) with a mean age of (62.3±8.1) years met the diagnostic criteria for PAL which was defined as the air leak persisted more than 3 days despite of the closed thoracic drainage after medical thoracoscopic treatment of bullous pulmonary-pleural diseases.They received the following treatment procedures (referred to as "position plus"):①Pleural cavity injection (50% glucose 20 ml+thrombin 5 000 U).②Changing the patient's position under continuous negative pressure suction to find the position causing the complete stop or significant reduction of air leakage, and keeping in the position for 24-48 hours.③If the PAL wasn't stopped 48 hours later, the procedures above would be repeated.The duration of air leakage after "position plus", times of pleural cavity injection, condition of lung re-expansion, recurrence of air leakage and complications during hospitalization were recorded. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results:¯x±s or M(P25, P75) for continuous variables; frequency and percentages for categoric variables. Results: A total of 20 patients were included. The average duration of air leakage after"position plus" was (1.32±0.97) days. The times of pleural cavity injection required were 1.0(1.0, 1.0).All the patients showed good lung re-expansion in review of imaging after PAL was stopped. One patient had recurrent air leakage during hospitalization. No serious complications occurred. Conclusion: The comprehensive "position plus" intervention method is effective, safe and easily operating for the treatment of PAL after medical thoracoscopic treatment of bullous pulmonary-pleural diseases.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) and its constituents have been shown to modify rumen fermentation and improve growth performance. Garlic skin, a by-product of garlic processing, contains similar bioactive components as garlic bulb. This study aimed to investigate the effects of garlic skin supplementation on growth performance, ruminal microbes, and metabolites in ruminants. Twelve Hu lambs were randomly assigned to receive a basal diet (CON) or a basal diet supplemented with 80 g/kg DM of garlic skin (GAS). The experiment lasted for 10 weeks, with the first 2 weeks serving as the adaptation period. The results revealed that the average daily gain and volatile fatty acid concentration were higher (P < 0.05) in lambs fed GAS than those in the CON group. Garlic skin supplementation did not significantly (P > 0.10) affect the α-diversity indices, including the Chao1 index, the abundance-based coverage estimator value, and the Shannon and Simpson indices. At the genus level, garlic skin supplementation altered the ruminal bacterial composition by increasing (P < 0.05) the relative abundances of Prevotella, Bulleidia, Howardella, and Methanosphaera and decreasing (P < 0.05) the abundance of Fretibacterium. Concentrations of 139 metabolites significantly differed (P < 0.05) between the GAS and the CON groups. Among them, substrates for rumen microbial protein synthesis were enriched in the GAS group. The pathways of pyrimidine metabolism, purine metabolism, and vitamin B6 metabolism were influenced (P < 0.05) by garlic skin supplementation. Integrated correlation analysis also provided a link between the significantly altered rumen microbiota and metabolites. Thus, supplementation of garlic skin improved the growth performance of lambs by modifying rumen fermentation through shifts in the rumen microbiome and metabolome.

OBJECTIVE: The investigate the inhibitory effects of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) monomer salvianolic acid B (Sal-B) and its magnesium salt Salvia Miltiorrhiza Polyphenolate Injection (ZDDY) against SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro and explore the molecular mechanism. OBJECTIVE: The anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of Sal-B and ZDDY was assessed using the authentic and pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 infection assay. The antiviral targets of Sal-B were identified by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. Circular dichroism spectroscopy was used to examine the structural characteristics of HR1 and HR2 regions of SARS-CoV-2 S protein, and the S protein-mediated cell-cell fusion assay was used to evaluate the effect of Sal-B on virus-cell membrane fusion. Flow cytometry was carried out to analyze the effect of Sal-B on the binding of SARS-CoV-2 RBD to hACE2 receptor. OBJECTIVE: The median effective concentrations (EC50) of Sal-B and ZDDY against SARSCoV-2 infection in Vero-E6 cells were 55.47 µmol/L and 36.07 µg/mL, respectively. Both Sal-B and ZDDY successfully inhibited the entry of SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus into the cells that stably expressed human ACE2 (ACE2/293T), with half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 1.69 µmol/L and 24.81 µg/mL, respectively. Sal-B showed a binding affinity of -8.2 kcal/mol to the 6-helix bundle (6-HB) of SARS-CoV-2 S protein. Molecular dynamics simulation showed stable binding between Sal-B and the 6-HB of SARS-CoV-2 S protein at the predicted binding site. Sal-B disturbed the formation of the secondary structure of 6-HB in HR1P/HR2P mixture, resulting in a significantly lowered α-helicity (P < 0.05). Sal-B dose-dependently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 S protein-mediated cell-cell fusion, with an IC50 of 3.33 µmol/L. Sal-B showed no effect on RBD-Fc protein binding to the ACE2 receptor. OBJECTIVE: Sal-B and its magnesium salt ZDDY can inhibit the entry of SARS-CoV-2 in Vero-E6 cells in vitro by blocking SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-mediated virus-cell membrane fusion.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands, provide a tunable platform to search a new state of matter. A two-dimensional (2D) perfect kagome lattice, whose geometrical frustration is a key to realizing quantum spin liquids, has been formed in the π - d conjugated 2D MOF [Cu3(C6S6)] n (Cu-BHT). The recent discovery of its superconductivity with a critical temperature T c of 0.25 kelvin raises fundamental questions about the nature of electron pairing. Here, we show that Cu-BHT is a strongly correlated unconventional superconductor with extremely low superfluid density. A nonexponential temperature dependence of superfluid density is observed, indicating the possible presence of superconducting gap nodes. The magnitude of superfluid density is much smaller than those in conventional superconductors and follows the Uemura's relation of strongly correlated superconductors. These results imply that the unconventional superconductivity in Cu-BHT originates from electron correlations related to spin fluctuations of kagome lattice.

Bovine colostrum is important for neonates' health due to its nutritive and non-nutritive components. Heat treatment of colostrum is a well-established management tool, but it may influence colostrum components and affect the health status of calves. In our previous studies, we had shown that colostrum proteome and serum proteome of calves were altered by heat treatment to different degrees. Our objectives in this study were to investigate the effects of heat treatment on colostrum metabolome and the effect of feeding heat-treated colostrum on the serum metabolome of newborn calves. Further, the changes in serum metabolome from before to after colostrum feeding were characterized. Newborn Holstein female calves (n = 10) were randomized within pairs and fed heat-treated (n = 5; 60 °C, 60 min) or raw (n = 5) colostrum at 8.5% of birth BW by esophageal feeder within 1 h of birth. After a single colostrum feeding, calves were not fed until after the 8 h time point. Blood samples were taken immediately prior to feeding (0 h) and 8 h after feeding. The colostrum and serum metabolome were first analyzed using reverse-phase chromatography and tandem MS, and serum metabolome was then further analyzed using hydrophilic interaction chromatography and tandem MS. In colostrum metabolome, 458 features were identified and 328 were annotated and a trend of separation between raw and heat-treated colostrum could be observed through multivariate analysis. In serum metabolome, 3 360 features were identified and 1 439 were annotated, but no trend of separation was observed between the two groups of calves fed raw colostrum vs. heat-treated colostrum. The serum metabolome presented substantial differences comparing before (0 h) and after colostrum feeding (8 h); in particular, a tripeptide, ß-homovaline-ß-homoalanine-ß-homoleucine, and 1-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy-α-d-glucopyranosyl)-1D-myo-inositol had higher concentrations after colostrum feeding than before, along with other metabolites that were not fully annotated. Based on a relatively small sample size, our findings point to the effect of heat treatment on the change of colostrum metabolome, but not on the change of serum metabolome of calves fed raw colostrum vs. heat-treated colostrum. Further studies using larger sample size and complementary analytical techniques are warranted to further explore potential heat treatment-induced alterations in colostrum metabolome.

In the present study, we analyzed the effects of Glycyrrhiza polysaccharide (GCP) on growth performance, serum antioxidant capacity, and biochemistry of broilers. A total of 600, one-day-old AA broilers randomly divided into 5 treatment groups with 6 replicate pens of 20 birds per cage received dietary supplementation with GCP (0, 200, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 mg/kg) for 42 d. The supplementation of GCP linearly decreased (P < 0.05) feed conversion rate on day 22 to 42. Dietary supplementation with GCP reduced (P < 0.05) serum total cholesterol on day 21 and 42 and linearly improved (P < 0.05) albumin and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Dietary supplementation with 1,000 or 1,500 mg/kg GCP significantly increased (P < 0.05) serum total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity on day 21 and 42 and reduced (P < 0.05) serum malondialdehyde content on 21 d. Dietary supplementation with 1,000 or 1,500 mg/kg GCP significantly improved (P < 0.05) interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) expressions in liver on day 21 and 42. At the end of the experiment, we randomly selected 20 broilers from 3 treatment groups (0, 1,000, and 1,500 mg/kg), respectively, to perform an lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute stress experiment. The 60 broilers were divided into 6 treatment groups with 10 birds per cage. The experiment was designed as a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with GCP (0, 1,000, or 1,500 mg/kg) and LPS (injection of saline or 1 mg/kg body weight) levels as treatments. When the grouping was finished, the broilers were immediately intraperitoneally injected with LPS or normal saline. Six hours after challenged, serum antioxidant and liver immunity were analyzed. The results showed that dietary GCP prevented LPS-induced reductions in T-SOD activity and increases in malonaldehyde content (P < 0.05). Also, dietary GCP supplementation mitigated the LPS-induced increase in IL-1ß and IFN-γ in the liver. Supplementation with 1,500 mg/kg GCP showed the most optimal effect in broilers. GCP has the potential to be used as feed additive in broilers.

PURPOSE: Sestamibi Single-Positron Emission Computed Tomography/Diagnostic-quality Computed Tomography (MIBI-SPECT/CT) is a common technology used for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) localization in clinical practice. However, the clinicopathologic factors affecting the accuracy of MIBI-SPECT/CT and the potential limitations remain unclear. METHODS: Retrospectively enrolled PHPT patients (n = 280) were analyzed from August 2017 to December 2019. RESULTS: Of 96 patients with PHPT (mean age, 54 years; 63 females), 17 had discordance between MIBI-SPECT/CT and intraoperative findings. Among the 17 patients with discordance, 58.8% had major discordance, which occurred in most patients with multigland disease (MGD). Compared with concordant patients, discordant patients exhibited increased frequencies of autoimmune thyroid disease (29.4% vs 10.1%, p = 0.035), MDG (41.2% vs 3.8%, p = 0.035), higher PTH (296 pg/mL vs 146 pg/mL; p = 0.012),and lower phosphorus levels (0.77 mmol/L vs 0.90 mmol/L; p = 0.024). MDG (odds ratio [OR], 16.95; 95% CI 2.10-142.86), parathyroid lesion size of 12 mm or less (OR, 6.93; 95% CI 1.41-34.10), and a PTH level higher than 192.5 pg/mL (OR, 12.66; 95% CI 2.17-71.43) were independently associated with discordant MIBI-SPECT/CT results. CONCLUSION: MGD was most strongly associated with discordance between MIBI-SPECT/CT and intraoperative findings followed by a PTH level higher than 192.5 pg/mL and parathyroid lesion size of 12 mm or less. Surgeons should recognize these potential limitations, which may improve the preoperative procedure by encouraging further localization imaging and promptly facilitate intraoperative troubleshooting.

To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine in the treatment of drug-induced liver injury(DILI). By searching the randomized controlled trials(RCTs) of the Chinese medicine published in CNKI, WanFang, VIP, PubMed, Web of Science, in a time limit from database establishment to May 1, 2020. The bias risk assessment and Meta-analysis were then conducted for the included studies. Seventeen studies were finally included, all of which were RCTs, including 1 407 patients. The experimental group was treated with Chinese herbal medicine decoction or Chinese patent medicine, involving a total of 11 kinds of drugs, and the control group was treated with conventional Western medicine. Meta-analysis results showed that, in terms of treatment effective rate, Yinlan Yigan Granules, Shuganning, Jiangmeiling Capsules, Baidan Shugan Recipe and Sini Shugan Decoction were all superior to Western medicine treatment. In terms of reducing alanine aminotransferase(ALT), Yinlan Yigan Granules, Shuganning, Hugan Jiedu Recipe, Wuzhi Tablets, Wucao Baogan Recipe and Liuwei Wuling Tablets were superior to Western medicine. In terms of reducing aspartate aminotransferase(AST), Shuganning, Hugan Jiedu Recipe, Wucao Baogan Recipe, Liuwei Wuling Tablets and Sini Shugan Decoction were all superior to Western medicine. In terms of reducing total bilirubin(TBiL), Yinlan Yigan Granules, Shuganning, Jiedu Hugan Yin, Wuzhi Tablets, Wucao Baogan Recipe, Baidan Shugan Recipe and Sini Shugan Decoction were all superior to Western medicine treatment. Combined with network Meta-analysis and probability ranking, it can be seen that, Jiangmeiling Capsules, Shuganning, Sini Shugan Decoction and Baidan Shugan Recipe were most likely to be the best drugs to improve the efficiency and reduce ALT, AST, TBiL, respectively, with certain advantages compared to conventional Western medicine treatment. Of the seventeen studies included, eight studies described safety issues, three of which involved the test group, all of which were minor adverse reactions that disappeared after drug withdrawal or symptomatic treatment. However, due to the low quality of the included studies, more high-quality clinical studies are needed for further verification, thus providing more evidence-based medical evidence for Chinese medicine intervention in DILI.

Vaccination is an effective method to prevent Newcastle disease (ND) in chickens. Marcol 52 and #10 white oil are mineral-based adjuvants and can be found in commercial inactivated ND virus vaccines. The present study demonstrated that a vegetable origin oil E515-D had lower polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and higher flash point than the commercial products Marcol 52 and #10 white oil. E515-D could be mixed with an aqueous phase containing ND virus antigen to form a stable water-in-oil vaccine emulsion and exhibited more potent adjuvant effects on the immune response than Marcol 52 and #10 white oil. Moreover, the absorption of E515-D-adjuvanted vaccine was faster than absorption of Marcol 52- and #10 white oil-adjuvanted vaccines when ND virus vaccines were injected in broilers. Therefore, E515-D was safe and could be a suitable adjuvant used in vaccines for food animals. In addition,E515-D is not easy to be flammable during shipping and storage owing to its higher flash point.

Atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) has been a cause of serious environmental pollution in China. Historically, China used too little Nr in its agriculture to feed its population. However, with the rapid increase in N fertilizer use for food production and fossil fuel consumption for energy supply over the last four decades, increasing gaseous Nr species (e.g. NH3 and NOx) have been emitted to the atmosphere and then deposited as wet and dry deposition, with adverse impacts on air, water and soil quality as well as plant biodiversity and human health. This paper reviews the issues associated with this in a holistic way. The emissions, deposition, impacts, actions and regulations for the mitigation of atmospheric Nr are discussed systematically. Both NH3 and NOx make major contributions to environmental pollution but especially to the formation of secondary fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which impacts human health and light scattering (haze). In addition, atmospheric deposition of NH3 and NOx causes adverse impacts on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to acidification and eutrophication. Regulations and practices introduced by China that meet the urgent need to reduce Nr emissions are explained and resulting effects on emissions are discussed. Recommendations for improving future N management for achieving 'win-win' outcomes for Chinese agricultural production and food supply, and human and environmental health, are described. The present study was to evaluate antioxidative effect of tea extract granule (TEG) on oxidative stress induced by cyclophosphamide (Cy) in chickens. In experiment 1, chickens were randomly divided into 5 groups with 10 birds in each. Groups 3 to 5 were orally administered TEG in drinking water for 7 D at doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg body weight, respectively. After that, groups 2 to 5 received intramuscular injection of Cy (100 mg/kg BW) for 3 D. Group 1 was not treated as a control. In experiment 2, chickens were grouped in the same way as in experiment 1. Groups 2 to 5 received intramuscular injection of Cy (100 mg/kg BW) for 3 D. After that, groups 3 to 5 were orally administered TEG in drinking water for 7 D at doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg BW, respectively. Results showed that Cy injection induced significantly decreased body weight and oxidative stress. Oral administration of TEG before or after Cy injection increased body weight, the thymus, bursa, and spleen indices, total antioxidant capacity, and the levels of glutathione; elevated the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase; as well as decreased the protein carbonyl content, lipid peroxide, and malondialdehyde. In addition, TEG administration reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species. Therefore, TEG could be a promising agent against oxidative stress in the poultry industry.

In marine species, the transcriptomic response to Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil implicated many biochemical pathways, with corresponding adverse outcomes on organ development and physiological performance. Terrestrial organisms differ in their mechanisms of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their physiological challenges, and may reveal either distinct effects of oil on biochemical pathways or the generality of the responses to oil shown in marine species. Using a cross-species hybridization microarray approach, we investigated the transcriptomic response in the liver of Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) exposed to DWH oil compared with birds from a control site. Our analysis identified 295 genes differentially expressed between birds exposed to oil and controls. Gene ontology (GO) and canonical pathway analysis suggested that the identified genes were involved in a coordinated response that promoted hepatocellular proliferation and liver regeneration while inhibiting apoptosis, necrosis, and liver steatosis. Exposure to oil also altered the expression of genes regulating energy homeostasis, including carbohydrate metabolism and gluconeogenesis, and the biosynthesis, transport and metabolism of lipids. These results provide a molecular mechanism for the long-standing observation of hepatic hypertrophy and altered lipid biosynthesis and transport in birds exposed to crude oil. Several of the activated pathways and pathological outcomes shown here overlap with the ones altered in fish species upon exposure to oil. Overall, our study shows that the path of oil contamination from the marine system into salt marshes can lead to similar responses in terrestrial birds to those described in marine organisms, suggesting similar adverse outcomes and shared machinery for detoxification.

1. Functional microRNA (miRNA) screening for abdominal fat tissue with different dietary vitamin E (VE) levels was performed to reveal miRNAs, genes and metabolic pathways involved in abdominal fat deposition in broilers. 2. A total of 240, one-day-old healthy female chicks were randomly allocated into five dietary treatments containing either 0, 20, 50, 75 or 100 IU DL-α-tocopherol acetate. The sequencing of miRNAs from abdominal fat tissues was performed. The target genes of miRNAs were predicted and enrichment analysis for these genes was performed. Diets supplemented with 50 IU VE significantly diminished abdominal fat deposition in broilers at day 35 of age. 3. A total of 29 miRNAs were differentially expressed between control and 50 IU VE treatment. Ten of the 23 target genes were enriched in four signalling pathways: tight junction, SNARE interactions in vesicular transport, regulation of autophagy and proteasome. 4. This study identified miRNA, target genes and pathways in dietary VE treatment for broilers, providing new insights into the miRNA regulation of abdominal fat deposition in broilers.
