Objective: To explore the effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) nursing under the integrated management mode during anesthesia recovery. Methods: The researchers' hospital admitted 114 patients who underwent general anesthesia between August 2022 and April 2023. Based on the admission order, these patients were divided into a control group (N=57) and an observation group (N=57). The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the observation group received comprehensive TCM nursing management, which included therapies such as cupping, acupressure, massage, herbal decoction, and mirabilite application. The study evaluated the psychological status, recovery indexes after anesthesia, comfort level, incidence of complications, and patient satisfaction with nursing care. Results: Compared to the control group, the observation group showed significant improvement in their psychological well-being (P < .05) and better recovery outcomes after anesthesia (P < .05). Additionally, the observation group reported higher levels of comfort (P < .05), a lower incidence of complications (8.77% vs 29.82%, P < .05), and greater satisfaction with nursing care (98.25% vs 84.21%, P < .05) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Integrated management of traditional Chinese medicine effectively reduces postoperative adverse events, improves treatment outcomes, and facilitates patient recovery. Its benefits are evident, and its feasibility is well-established.

Multiple epigenetic factors play a regulatory role in maintaining the homeostasis of cutaneous components and are implicated in the aging process of the skin. They have been associated with the activation of the senescence program, which is the primary contributor to age-related decline in the skin. Senescent species drive a series of interconnected processes that impact the immediate surroundings, leading to structural changes, diminished functionality, and heightened vulnerability to infections. Geroprotective medicines that may restore the epigenetic balance represent valid therapeutic alliances against skin aging. Most of them are well-known Western medications such as metformin, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), rapamycin, and histone deacetylase inhibitors, while others belong to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedies for which the scientific literature provides limited information. With the help of the Geroprotectors.org database and a comprehensive analysis of the referenced literature, we have compiled data on compounds and formulae that have shown potential in preventing skin aging and have been identified as epigenetic modulators.

BACKGROUND: Optimized New Shengmai Powder (ONSMP) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula with significant anti-heart failure and myocardial fibrosis effects, but the specific molecular biological mechanisms are not fully understood. METHODS: In this study, we first used network pharmacology to analyze the ONSMP's active ingredients, core signaling pathways, and core targets. Second, calculate the affinity and binding modes of the ONSMP components to the core targets using molecular docking. Finally, the heart failure rat model was established by ligating the left anterior descending branch of the coronary artery and assessing the effect of ONSMP on myocardial fibrosis in heart failure using echocardiography, cardiac organ coefficients, heart failure markers, and pathological sections after 4 weeks of drug intervention. The cAMP level in rat myocardium was determined using Elisa, the α-SMA and FSP-1 positive expression determined by immunohistochemistry, and the protein and mRNA levels of the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway were detected by Western Blotting and quantitative real-time PCR, respectively. RESULTS: The result shows that the possible mechanism of ONSMP in reducing myocardial fibrosis also includes the use of 12 active ingredients such as baicalin, vitamin D, resveratrol, tanshinone IIA, emodin, 15,16-dihydrotanshinone-i to regulate ß1-AR, AC6, EPAC1, Rap1 A, STAT3, and CCND1 on the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts and reduce the excessive secretion of collagen, effectively improve cardiac function and ventricular remodeling in heart failure rats. CONCLUSION: This research shows that ONSMP can inhibit myocardial fibrosis and delay heart failure through the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway.

Background: Propofol is a widely used intravenous anesthetic in clinic. However, it is easy to cause serious circulatory fluctuation in elderly patients, so the dose should be reduced as appropriate. Studies have shown that wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) can reduce the dosage of propofol in patients undergoing painless endoscopy. Unfortunately, there is no report on whether WAA will reduce the dosage of propofol when used for anesthesia in elderly patients. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of WAA on propofol dosage in elderly patients, and to provide a new method for maintaining circulatory stability in elderly patients under general anesthesia. Methods: From October 2022 to December 2022, Hebei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was selected. Forty-four elderly patients undergoing general anesthesia in urology department were randomly divided into two groups according to the complete random method with WAA group, consisting of 22 individuals, and non-WAA (NWAA) group, also consisting of 22 individuals. Both groups were treated with WAA or false needle acupuncture at the same site before anesthesia, respectively, and the needle was kept until the operation was finished. During the operation, the dosage of propofol was adjusted according to the depth of field monitoring density spectrum array (DSA) and anesthesia consciousness index (Ai) with anesthesia monitor. Results: A total of 44 patients participated in this study, and all of them completed the experiment. There were no significant difference in sex, age, height, weight, duration of anesthesia, liver and kidney function, score of Fried frailty scale, activity of daily living (ADL), age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI) and mini-cognitive test (Mini-Cog) between the two groups (P>0.05), but the total dose of propofol (WAA =121.5, NWAA =170.5) mg and maintenance dose (WAA =1.02±0.55, NWAA =1.76±0.67) mg/kg/h, utilization rate of vasoactive drugs during operation, recovery time after anesthesia (WAA =2, NWAA =3) min and surgeon satisfaction (WAA =9, NWAA =8.5) had significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusions: Compared with NWAA group, WAA group could reduce the dosage of propofol in anesthesia for elderly patients with exocrine secretion and was beneficial to circulatory stability. Epoxy thermal conductive adhesives with high thermal conductivity and dynamic mechanical properties are important thermally conductive materials for fabricating highly integrated electronic devices. In this paper, micro-Al2O3 is used as a thermally conductive filler for the epoxy resin composite and investigated the effect of micron-sized alumina particle size on the thermal conductivity and dynamic mechanical property of epoxy resin by the transient planar hot plate method and DMA (Dynamic mechanical analysis). The experimental results show that with the same amount of alumina filling, the thermal conductivity and Tg (glass transition temperature) of epoxy/Al2O3 composite material decrease with the increase of alumina particle size. The maximum thermal conductivity of the composite material is 0.679 (W/mK), while the energy storage modulus of epoxy/Al2O3 composite material increases with the increase of alumina particle size, and the maximum energy storage modulus of the composite material is 160MPa. Compared with pure epoxy resin, the thermal conductivity and energy storage modulus have increased by 2.7 and 3.2 times, respectively. The epoxy/Al2O3 composite was applied to the COB (Chips On Board) type LED package, and the substrate temperature of the LED dropped to the lowest after 1.5 hours of operation using EP-A5 composite, and the temperature was stabilized at 38.2°C, indicating that the addition of 5-micron alumina composite has the best heat dissipation in the COB type LED package. These results are critical for the implementation of particulate-filled polymer composites in practical applications because relaxed material specifications and handling procedures can be incorporated in production environments to improve efficiency.

Bazi Bushen, a Chinese-patented drug with the function of relieving fatigue and delaying ageing, has been proven effective for extenuating skin senescence. To investigate the potential mechanism, senescence-accelerated mouse prone 6 (SAMP6) was intragastrically administered with Bazi Bushen for 9 weeks to induce skin homeostasis. Skin homeostasis is important in mitigating skin senescence, and it is related to many factors such as oxidative stress, SASP, apoptosis, autophagy and stem cell. In our study, skin damage in SAMP6 mice was observed using HE, Masson and SA-ß-gal staining. The content of hydroxyproline and the activities of SOD, MDA, GSH-PX and T-AOC in the skin were measured using commercial assay kits. The level of SASP factors (IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, MMP2 and MMP9) in skin were measured using ELISA kits. The protein expressions of p16, p21, p53, Bax, Bcl-2, Cleaved caspase-3, LC3, p62, Beclin1, OCT4, SOX2 and NANOG were measured by western blotting. The expression of ITGA6 and COL17A1 was measured by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting. Our findings demonstrated that Bazi Bushen alleviated skin senescence by orchestrating skin homeostasis, reducing the level of oxidative stress and the expression of SASP, regulating the balance of apoptosis and autophagy and enhancing the protein expressions of ITGA6 and COL17A1 to improve skin structure in SAMP6 mice. This study indicated that Bazi Bushen could serve as a potential therapy for alleviating skin senescence.

OBJECTIVE: Infections and death have been a part of our daily lives since the COVID-2019 pandemic outbreak in 2019, and the societal and economic consequences have lingered for an unanticipated duration. Novel and effective treatments are still desperately needed around the world to combat the infection. Here, we discovered a novel traditional Chinese medicine formula (TCMF) to potentially combat COVID-19 through reverse systematic pharmacology (disease → targets → TCMF → disease). METHODS: Combining Integrative network pharmacology and the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, a TCMF for COVID-19 was identified. In silico physiological interactions between herbs and disease hub targets were validated by molecular docking and dynamics simulation. RESULTS: Based on disease-related gene/pathway targets and a combination of reverse pharmacology and TCM meridian tropism theory, a COVID-19-associated herb database was constructed. A new TCMF, including Gancao, Baitouweng, Congbai, and Diyu (GBCD), was discovered for anti-COVID-19 therapy. The KEGG and GO analyses of 49 intersecting genes suggested that GBCD could combat COVID-19 through antiviral, antiinflammation, immunoregulation, and cytoprotection activities. Moreover, these possible effects were validated through docking and MD simulation. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to combine reverse pharmacology and meridian tropism theories for TCMF development, and a novel herbal combination, GBCD, was discovered for anti-COVID-19 therapy.

We investigated the priming effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) on carbon sink and iron uptake, and the possible mediation by AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Funneliformis mosseae) in semiarid agricultural soils. Maize seed dressings comprised of three nZVI concentrations of 0, 1, 2 g·kg-1 and was tested with and without AMF inoculation under high and low soil moistures, respectively. The ICP-OES observations indicated that both low dose of nZVI (1 g·kg-1) and high dose of nZVI (2 g·kg-1) significantly increased the iron concentrations in roots (L: 54.5-109.8 %; H: 119.1-245.4 %) and shoots (L: 40.8-78.9 %; H: 81.1-99.4 %). Importantly, the absorption and translocation rate of iron were substantially improved by AMF inoculation under the low-dose nZVI. Yet, the excess nanoparticles as a stress were efficiently relieved by rhizosphere hyphae, and the iron concentration in leaves and stems can maintain as high as about 300 mg·kg-1 while the iron translocation efficiency was reduced. Moreover, next-generation sequencing confirmed that appropriate amount of nZVI clearly improved the rhizosphere colonization of Funneliformis mosseae (p < 0.001) and the development of soil fungal community. Soil observations further showed that the hyphae development and GRSP (glomalin-related soil protein) secretion were significantly promoted (p < 0.05), with the increased R0.25 (< 0.25 mm) by 35.97-41.16 %. As a return, AMF and host plant turned to input more organic matter into soils for microbial growth and Fe uptake, and such interactions became more pronounced under drought stress. In contrast, high dose of nZVI (2 g·kg-1) tended to agglomerate on the surface of hyphae and spores, causing severe deformation and inactivation of AMF symbionts. Therefore, the priming effects of nZVI on carbon sequestration and Fe uptake in agricultural soils were positively mediated by AMF via the feedback loop of the plant-soil-microbe system for enhanced adaptation to global climate change.

BACKGROUD: Estrogen deficiency is the leading cause of postmenopausal osteoporosis(PMOP) and phytoestrogens soy isoflavones (SI) have been shown to improve PMOP. Equol (Eq), an in vivo metabolite of phytoestrogens soy isoflavones (SI), has a more stable structure and stronger biological activity than its parent compound and has the greatest estrogenic activity. However, there are few studies on the therapeutic effect of Eq on PMOP. PURPOSE: To explore the therapeutic effect and mechanisms of Eq on POMP. METHODS: Osteoblast-like cells ROS1728 were cultured with different doses of Eq, estradiol (E2), separately. The effect of Eq on the proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle of osteoblasts were detected by CCK-8 and flow cytometry, and the expression of OPG/RANK/RANKL signaling pathway of osteoblasts was detected by Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blot (WB), and RNA silencing technology were carried out to explore the receptors through which Eq plays a role. Then PMOP rat model was established and treated by Eq or E2 to further verification of the effect and mechanism of Eq on PMOP. RESULT: Eq promoted the proliferation and inhibited the apoptosis of osteoblasts and increased the proportion of osteoblasts in the S phase and G2/M phase in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistically, Eq treatment upregulated the expression of OPG and OPG/RANKL ratio in osteoblasts and this regulatory effect was mainly mediated through the ERß receptor. Furthermore, in vivo study, Eq improved microstructure and BMD of the femur of PMOP rat model, which imitated the osteoprotective effect of E2. Moreover, the Eq or E2 treatment increased serum levels of Ca, 1,25(OH)2D3, bone Gla-protein(BGP), and Type I procollagen (PC1), and reduced serum levels of phosphorus (P), parathyroid hormone(PTH), pyridinol (PYD), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and urinary level of deoxypyridinoline (DPD) in the treatment OVX group compared with the untreated OVX group. Meanwhile, Eq or E2 markedly induced the mRNA and protein expression of OPG and OPG/RANKL ratio. CONCLUSION: Eq can combine with ERß and exert a protective effect on PMOP by upregulating OPG/RANKL pathway.

Background: The national Comprehensive Cancer Network has suggested pembrolizumab as a second-line therapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients with a programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) combined positive score (CPS) ≥ 10. However, despite the increased survival rate associated with pembrolizumab in these patient population, the high cost of pembrolizumab may influence its antitumor effect. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of pembrolizumab compared to chemotherapy as second-line treatments for esophageal carcinoma (EC) based on KEYNOTE-181 trial. Methods: A Markov model was constructed using TreeAge 2021 based on three different groups: all intent-to-treat patients (ITT population), patients with ESCC (ESCC population), and patients with a PD-L1 CPS ≥10 (CPS ≥10 population). Incremental cost, Incremental effect, Life-years, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) were calculated. Analyses were conducted on the setting of a willingness-to-pay threshold of $150,000 from the US perspective. Results: The ICERs for pembrolizumab were $157,589.545 per QALY, $60,238.823 per QALY, and $100,114.929 per QALY compared with chemotherapy in the ITT, ESCC, and CPS≥10 populations, respectively. The ICER of the ITT population was higher than $150,000, suggesting that pembrolizumab was not a cost-effective treatment scheme in patients with a PD-L1 CPS ≤ 10 or esophageal adenocarcinoma. The ICER was < $150,000 in the ESCC and CPS≥10 populations, indicating that pembrolizumab was cost-effective in these two subgroups. Conclusion: The determining of pembrolizumab as a cost-effective second-line therapy for EC in the United States depends on the histologic type and PD-L1 expression.

Background: This study aimed to explore whether S-Equol delays diabetes-induced osteoporosis and the molecular mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects. Materials and methods: Thirty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into five groups. The diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) group and three S-Equol treatment groups were intraperitoneally injected with streptozotocin (STZ) to develop a DOP model. After the 12-week intervention, bone transformation indicators were detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit; bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microstructure were obtained using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and microCT; morphological changes in the bone tissue were investigated using HE staining; bone morphogenetic proteins were detected using immunohistochemical staining. ROS17/2.8 cells were cultured in vitro, and Cell Counting Kit-8 was used to test the protective effects of S-Equol in osteoblastic cells in a high-fat and high-glucose environment. Furthermore, the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), estrogen receptor ß(ERß), phosphorylated Akt (pAKT)/protein kinase B (AKT), and osteocalcin (OC) in bone tissue and ROS17/2.8 cells was assessed using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting. To determine whether ERß and phosphatidylinositol 3' -kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling pathways are involved in the process, LY294002 (PI3K signaling pathway inhibitor) and small interfering RNA targeting ERß mRNA (si-ERß) were used to verify the function of the ERß-mediated PI3K/AKT pathway in this process. Results: After the 12-week intervention, S-Equol enhanced BMD, improved bone microarchitecture in DOP rats (P < 0.05), and improved markers of bone metabolism (P < 0.05). In vitro, 10-6 mmol/L S-Equol was selected to significantly protect osteoblasts from high- and high-glucose environments (P < 0.05). Gene expression of OPG, ERß, pAKT/AKT, and OC was upregulated compared to the DOP group, and RANKL was downregulated compared to the DOP group (P < 0.05) both in bone tissue and osteoblastic cells. The promotion of OPG and pAKT/AKT is mediated by LY294002 and siERß. Conclusion: S-Equol binds to ERß to regulate OPG/RANKL via the PI3K/AKT pathway and improve DOP. Our results demonstrate the potential role of S-Equol in the treatment of DOP by targeting ERß. Thus, S-Equol may have the potential to be an adjuvant drug for treating DOP.

Background: The diversification of follow-up ophthalmic imaging examination methods, and whether there are differences in clinical characteristics of VKH at the acute stage under different images. Our study aims to compare the imaging characteristics of the acute phase of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) under different fundus imaging methods to deepen clinical knowledge. Methods: A retrospective case study was performed on fundus images of 62 eyes from 31 patients with acute phase VKH and a disease duration ≤2 months who were treated at Ganzhou People's Hospital from January 2013 to December 2020. Fundus photography (FP), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) were performed on all 62 eyes. The fundus presentations were divided into an optic disc swelling (ODS) group, a serous retinal detachment (SRD) group, and a mixed type (MT) group (both ODS and SRD), and the proportions of patients in these groups and the coincidence rate of ODS, SRD, and MT identified by the three fundus imaging modes were determined. Results: The proportion of patients with ODS was highest under FP, and the proportion of patients with MT was highest under OCT. The proportions of patients with ODS and MT in the three fundus imaging modes differed significantly (P < 0.05), while the proportion of patients with SRD did not (P > 0.05). The proportion of patients with subretinal fluid with positive OCT results was significantly higher than those with positive FFA results (81.08% vs. 59.46%) (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Clinically significant positive signs could be obtained for acute VKH under different imaging methods. However, compared with FP and FFA, OCT tomography is more intuitive for the observation of lesions.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the effectiveness of Yangxin Decoction (YXD) in the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients with angina pectoris (AP). METHODS: In this study, we systematically and comprehensively searched the PUBMED, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WANGFANG, and VIP databases from their establishment to June 1, 2022. Clinical randomized controlled trials of YXD for the management of AP in patients with CHD were considered for inclusion. The outcomes included the response rate of AP, response rate based on electrocardiogram, and the rate of nitroglycerin use. Two authors independently performed literature selection, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. Any differences were resolved by a third author through a discussion. RESULTS: Nine trials involving 819 patients were included. The meta-analysis results showed that YXD significantly improved the response rate of AP (OR = 2.98, 95% CI: 1.96-4.55, I2 = 0%, P < .01) and the response rate based on the electrocardiogram (OR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.28-2.78, I2 = 26%, P < .01), and significantly reduced the rate of nitroglycerin use (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.19-3.52, I2 = 0%, P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that YXD was effective in the treatment of patients with AP of CHD. Further studies are required to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: The clinical advantages of painless colonoscopy can reduce the fear and discomfort of patients and increase the detection rate of diseases. Propofol has the characteristics of fast effect and short action time. It is a common choice for painless endoscopic sedation and anesthetics. However, propofol can cause severe respiratory and circulatory depression. Therefore, it is important to find a way to reduce the dose of propofol. AIM: To explore the effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture on propofol dose during colonoscopy. METHODS: Two hundred patients who were going to receive selective painless colonoscopy in Hebei Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were selected and divided into wrist-ankle acupuncture group (WAA group, n = 100) and control group (CON group, n = 100). After entering the operation room, patients were given 0.025 mg/kg nabufine intravenously and propofol at the initial dose of 0.5 mg/kg. In patients who did not fall asleep, propofol (10 mg/time) was given until loss of consciousness. Prior to anesthesia, patients in WAA group were punctured by specialist in the inferior 1, 2 and 3 regions according to the zoning principle of wrist-ankle acupuncture. The primary endpoint was required dose of propofol, and the secondary endpoints were the incidence of hypoxemia and hypotension. Furthermore, the following data were recorded: The operation time, wake-up time, incidence of nausea and vomiting, incidence of abdominal distention, post-colonoscopy pain, examiners' satisfaction, patients' satisfaction and Borg fatigue index. This study has been registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Registration Code: ChiCTR1900022177). RESULTS: The induced dose of propofol and the total dose of propofol in WAA group were 80 mg and 110 mg, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in CON group (P < 0.05). The incidences of hypoxemia and hypotension in the WAA group were 2.2% and 3.3%, respectively, significantly lower than those in the CON group (P < 0.05). The incidence of abdominal distension in the WAA group was 8.8%, which was significantly lower than that in the CON group (P < 0.05, 28.9%). The waking time of WAA group was 3.26 ± 0.87 min, which was significantly lower than that of CON group (6.06 ± 0.88 min, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Wrist-ankle acupuncture can reduce the induction dose and total dose of propofol as well as the incidence of adverse reactions in painless colonoscopy without affecting the satisfaction of examiners and patients. This procedure is simple in operation and easy to promote in clinical practice.

In a previous study, the peptide LGKDQVRT, which was identified by enzymatic hydrolysis, released during the proteolysis of Mytilus edulis, had potential osteogenic activity. In this study, the octapeptide LGKDQVRT was able to spontaneously bind calcium in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio, and the calcium-binding site likely involves calcium and amino acid VAL6 in the LGKDQVRT peptide to form a metal-donor to metal acceptor complex. The peptide LGKDQVRT has the activity of promoting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. The results of this study suggest that hydrolyzed peptides from Mytilus edulis protein can be used as a dietary supplement to improve calcium absorption and prevent osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture on the incidence of hypertension after tracheal intubation during induction of general anesthesia. METHODS: 200 patients receiving selective surgery under tracheal intubation and general anesthesia in our Hospital were selected and divided into control group and wrist-ankle acupuncture group using the random number table method, with 100 patients in each group. Sufentanil, cisatracurium besilate, remifentanil, etomidate and lidocaine hydrochloride were used for anesthesia induction, and intravenously injected according to the onset time of drugs, successively. The wrist-ankle acupuncture group was needled in bilateral upper 1, 2 and 3 areas, while the control group was treated with false acupuncture.Blood pressure and related blood biochemical indexes were measured and observed at different stages in each group. RESULT: The incidence of blood pressure exceeding 20% and 30% of basal blood pressure within 5 minutes after intubation was as follows:wrist-ankle acupuncture group 11.83% and 6.45%; control group 29.79% and 22.34%, The incidence in the study group was lower than that in the control group. Norepinephrine concentration in the wrist-ankle acupuncture group was significantly lower than that before induction (P < .05), and plasma Norepinephrine concentration in the wrist-ankle acupuncture group was significantly lower than that in the control group after intubation (P < .05). The plasma Norepinephrine concentration in the wrist-ankle acupuncture group was significantly lower than that in the control group after intubation (P < .05). CONCLUSION: wrist-ankle acupuncture can prevent hypertension after intubation during anesthesia induction. Moreover, it is safe, effective, minimally invasive. Therefore, it is easy to be popularized in clinical practice.

The IEELEEELEAER peptide (PIE) identified from the protein hydrolysate of Mytilus edulis is reported to enhance osteoblast growth and differentiation, which also possesses a superior bone formation ability both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, PIE bound to calcium spontaneously at the stoichiometry of 1:1, and there were amino nitrogen and carboxyl oxygen atoms in 2 glutamic acid residues at the calcium-binding sites in the PIE. The PIE-calcium complex facilitated calcium uptake through the Caco-2 cell monolayers. Incorporation of PIE into calcium phosphate cements enhanced calcium ion uptake and proliferation of osteoblasts and inhibit bacteria. This study suggest that calcium phosphate cements supplemented with PIE can serve as a potentially efficient material for bone graft used during spinal surgery.

Sea cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) is a kind of fishery product with high nutritional value. It exhibits a wide range of biological activity and has potential application in the food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries. However, there are no reports available on the effects of S. japonicus peptides (SJP) on bone mineral density regulations. The purpose of this work was to analyze the composition and osteogenic activity of SJP and explore its underlying mechanism. The results showed that SJP stimulated cell proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, SJP could promote the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells by altering the cell cycle progression and regulating the expression of Cyclins. Besides, SJP activated the WNT/ß-catenin pathway and increased the nuclear level of the active form ß-catenin. Furthermore, SJP also induced the expression of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) and increase the phosphorylation levels of p38, JNK, and ERK, suggesting that the osteogenic activity of SJP may be achieved through the activation of WNT/ß-catenin and BMP/MAPK signal pathways. In vivo, SJP significantly inhibited the serum levels of RANKL, ALP, and TRAP, whereas it increased the levels of osteocalcin and osteoprotegerin in OVX-mice. These results indicate that SJP may have the potential to stimulate bone formation and regeneration, and may be used as a functional food or nutritional supplement to prevent osteoporosis.

A new type of film packaging made from natural polysaccharide materials, with its environmental safety and friendliness, is considered as a potential substitute for plastics. Novel polysaccharide composite films based upon citrus pectin (CP) and sodium alginate (SA) were successfully prepared and characterized, containing pterostilbene (PTE) at various concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2 mM). The rheological analysis displayed that all film-forming liquids performed no gelation behavior with G" > G' at low frequency and weak gelation with G" < G' at high frequency. The SA-CP films had good tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB), while adding PTE as an antioxidant to the film reduced both the values. Of note, the SA-CP films with PTE had better moisture resistance than that of the pure SA-CP films, which was related to the changes of its microstructure. The increased roughness of the films containing PTE was observed by microscope. After calcium chloride cross-linking, the water solubility of the films was reduced, while its thermal stability was improved. Notably, the accretion of PTE expressively enhanced the antioxidant properties of the SA-CP films. Thus, the SA-CP composite films containing PTE could be utilized as an excellent antioxidant packaging material.
