RESUMEN

A novel bioactive flavan glycoside was isolated by solvent extraction method with the help of Soxhlet apparatus from the methanolic extract of Tradescantia spathacea Sw. Flavan glycoside having molecular formula C20H22O10, melting point 175-1780C, molecular weight by ESI-MS m/z (M + H]+ 423, optical rotation was[α]21D-45.1(c 0.20 methanol). Its structure was determined (-)-epicatechin 7-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside. Various color reactions, chemical degradation (like acid hydrolysis, permethylation, and enzymatic hydrolysis), UV-Visible spectrophotometry, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to establish the structure of compound (-)-(-)-epicatechin 7-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside.. A flavan glycoside was also tested with a DPPH assay method for antioxidant activity by using Ascorbic acid as standard. DPPH radical scavenging test data demonstrate that a flavan glycoside possesses potent antioxidant activity so this flavan glycoside can be utilized as a potent antioxidant agent.

RESUMEN

Viral infections are one of the challenging health hazards of the present medical care. One among such viral infections is "Oro-facial Herpes", caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (HSV-1). This case report shows the successful treatment of "Oro-facial herpes" and its complication only through Ayurveda. In which, there will be closed grouped vesicles on an erythematous base in the dermatomal pattern, with burning type of pain. The condition in Ayurveda can be co- related to 'Visarpa'. We present a case of 72-year, male, with sudden onset of edema over upper gums, with 3 to 4 vesicles over the left upper lip, left part of face within 2 days, along with reduced sensation to touch and temperature. The patient had redness, watering and burning sensation of left eye. Clinically the patient was diagnosed with "Oro- Facial Herpes". As pitta dosha and raktadhatu vitiation was noticed the case was managed by Nitya pitta rechaka (cholegogue), the dravy's with tikta, sheetaveerya and ruksha in nature. The patient showed improvement over 5 months of treatment from 10-Apr to 15-Aug-2018. The complaints of pain in the lesions reduced from 8 to 2, headache from 8 to 1 (VAS) and burning sensation reduced by 90%.

RESUMEN

The present study is an attempt to investigate the radioprotective efficacy of spinach against radiation induced oxidative stress, since its leaves are rich in antioxidants like carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) and high content of proteins, minerals, vitamin C. For the experimental study, healthy Swiss mice were selected from an inbred colony and divided into four groups. Group I (normal) it did not receive any treatment. Group II (drug treated) was orally supplemented with extract of spinach extract once daily at the dose of 1100 mg/kg for fifteen consecutive days. Group III (control) received distilled water orally equivalent to spinach extract for fifteen days than exposed to 5 Gy of gamma radiation. Group IV (experimental) was also administered orally with spinach extract for 15 consecutive days once daily. Thereafter, exposed to single dose of 5Gy of gamma radiation. After the exposure mice were than sacrificed at different autopsy intervals viz. 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 days. Testis was removed for various biochemical estimations viz. LPO, protein, cholesterol and glycogen. Radiation induced augmentation in lipid peroxidation, glycogen and cholesterol values were significantly ameliorated by supplementation of SE extract, whereas radiation induced deficit in protein content could be elevated. This indicates that spinach extract pre - treatment renders protection against various biochemical changes in the mice testis to some extent if taken continuously which might be due to synergistic effect of antioxidant constituents present in the spinach.
