RESUMEN

Air humidity is an important environmental factor restricting the fruit body growth of Auricularia heimuer. Low air humidity causes the fruit body to desiccate and enter dormancy. However, the survival mechanisms to low air humidity for fruit bodies before dormancy remain poorly understood. In the present study, we cultivated A. heimuer in a greenhouse and collected the fruit bodies at different air humidities (90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50%) to determine the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and non-enzymatic antioxidants such as ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH); and the activities of enzymatic antioxidants including superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR). Results showed that the MDA contents tended to increase with decreasing relative air humidity. Relative air humidity below 90% caused membrane lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress (based on MDA contents) to the fruit body, which we named air humidity stress. In contrast to the control and with the degree of stress, the GSH contents and activities of SOD, CAT, GR, GPX, and APX tended to ascend, whereas AsA showed a declining trend; the POD activity only rose at 50%. The antioxidants favored the fruit body to alleviate oxidative damage and strengthened its tolerance to air humidity stress. The antioxidant defense system could be an important mechanism for the fruit body of A. heimuer in air humidity stress.

In this study, an anaerobic/intermittently-aerated moving bed biofilm reactor (AnIA-MBBR) was proposed to realize simultaneous nitrification and endogenous denitrifying phosphorus removal (SNEDPR) in treating low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio wastewater. The effect of different intermittent aeration modes (short and long aeration) on nutrients' removal was investigated. With the C/N ratio around 3, the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and phosphorus were 90% and 74%, 88% and 59%, respectively, for short aeration and long aeration. The different aeration time also altered the nutrients' degradation pathway, biofilm characteristics, microbial community, and functional metabolic pathways. The results confirmed the occurrence of aerobic denitrifiers, anoxic denitrifiers, phosphorus accumulating organisms, glycogen accumulating organisms in AnIA-MBBR systems and their synergistic performance induced the SNEDPR. These results indicated that the application of AnIA in MBBR systems was an effective strategy to achieve SNEDPR, providing better simultaneous removal performance of nitrogen and phosphorus from low C/N ratio wastewater.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect and safety of acupuncture in treatment of neck pain due to cervical spondylosis. METHODS: According to the patients' preference and acceptance for the interventions of neck pain induced by cervical spondylosis, an acupuncture group (221 cases) and a non-acupuncture group (251 cases) were divided. After the control of confounding factors with propensity score matching, 218 cases were included in either acupuncture group or non-acupuncture group. In the acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied to Dazhui (GV 14), Baihui (GV 20), ashi points, bilateral neck-Jiaji (EX-B 2), Fengchi (GB 20), Houxi (SI 3), Shenmai (BL 62), etc. The treatment was given once daily, one course of intervention was composed of 5 treatments and 3 courses were included. In the non-acupuncture group, the oral administration of imrecoxib tablets and cobalt tablets was prescribed for 2 weeks. Before and after treatment, the scores of Northwick Park questionnaire (NPQ) and the simplified McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) were observed, and the safety was assessed in patients of the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment completion, the scores of NPQ and SF-MPQ were all reduced when compared with those before treatment in each group (P<0.001), and the scores of NPQ and SF-MPQ in the acupuncture group were lower than those of the non-acupuncture group (P<0.001). The incidence of adverse reactions was 6.0% (13/218) in the acupuncture group and was 10.1% (22/218) in the non-acupuncture group, without statistical significance in comparison (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture is effective and safe in the relief of neck pain and the improvement of comprehensive quality of life in the patients with cervical spondylosis.

Chromium propionate (Cr-Pro) and calcium propionate (Ca-Pro) are widely applied in dairy production, especially in the alleviation of heat stress (HS). HS can reduce the abundance of rumen microbiota and the lactation performance of dairy cows. The present work mainly focused on evaluating the effects of Cr-Pro and Ca-Pro on the performance, ruminal bacterial community, and stress of postpartum HS dairy cows as well as identifying the differences in their mechanisms. Fifteen multiparous postpartum Holstein cows with equivalent weights (694 ± 28 kg) and milk yields (41.2 ± 1.21 kg/day) were randomly divided into three groups: control (CON), Cr-Pro (CRPR), and Ca-Pro (CAPR). The control cows received the basal total mixed ration (TMR) diet, while the CRPR group received TMR with 3.13 g/day of Cr-Pro, and the CAPR group received TMR with 200 g/day of Ca-Pro. The rumen microbial 16S rRNA was sequenced using the Illumina NovaSeq platform along with the measurement of ruminal volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and milking performance. Cr-Pro and Ca-Pro improved lactation performance, increased the rumen VFA concentration, and altered the rumen microbiota of the HS dairy cows. Cr-Pro significantly improved the milk yield (p < 0.01). The richness and diversity of the microbial species significantly increased after feeding on Ca-Pro (p < 0.05). Gene function prediction revealed increased metabolic pathways and biological-synthesis-related function in the groups supplemented with Cr-Pro and Ca-Pro. Our results indicate that the application of Cr-Pro or Ca-Pro can provide relief for heat stress in dairy cows through different mechanisms, and a combination of both is recommended for optimal results in production.

Previous studies provided inconsistent results on the effects of antioxidant nutrient intake on lung cancer prevention. We aimed to evaluate the association between antioxidant consumption from food and supplemental sources and lung cancer incidence. Data were obtained from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial. A total of 98,451 participants were included in the data analysis. We used a multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between antioxidant intake and lung cancer risk. Dose-response assessments for individual nutrients were conducted. We also selected the model for the best combination of antioxidants for reducing lung cancer risk using machine learning methods. After the median follow-up of 12.2 years, 1642 new cases were identified. Intake of the calculated HRs indicated a trend for a higher quartile of food-based Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (fCDAI) associated with a lower lung cancer risk after adjusting for covariates (HRQ4vs.Q1 = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.79; P for trend < 0.001). Protective effects of dietary antioxidant intake were observed across all individual antioxidant micronutrients except magnesium. Random forests model suggested the dietary intake group of α-carotene, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin E, lycopene, selenium, lutein, and zeaxanthin, and ß-carotene had the most favorable effects on lung cancer prevention. Higher consumption of antioxidants from food sources has a protective effect against lung cancer, while no effects were shown in the supplemental group. It is recommended to consume a combination of various antioxidants due to the potential benefits from the interaction, while more research should be performed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of antioxidant synergic effects on lung cancer risk reduction.

To systematically review the effects of Tai chi on sleep quality, depression, and anxiety in patients with insomnia. The electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang Data, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals (VIP) were retrieved and screened by computer. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) on patients with insomnia who practiced Tai chi were collected, and the RCT risk of bias assessment criteria was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies. The combined effect size was expressed as the weighted mean difference (WMD), with a confidence interval of 95% (CI). Review Manager 5.4 and Stata16.0 were used for heterogeneity analysis and sensitivity analysis. Tai chi reduced the patients' Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) score (WMD = -1.75, 95% CI: -1.88, -1.62, p < 0.001); Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score (WMD = -5.08, 95% CI: -5.46, -4.69, p < 0.001), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA) score (WMD = -2.18, 95% CI: -2.98, -1.37, p < 0.001), and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) score (WMD = -7.01, 95% CI: -7.72, -6.29, p < 0.001). Tai chi exercise has a good preventive and ameliorating effect on insomnia, which can relieve patients' depression and anxiety, simultaneously enhancing various functions of the body. However, most of the included studies reported random assignment with some lack of specific descriptions, and the blinding of participants was difficult to achieve due to the nature of exercise, which may cause bias. Therefore, more high-quality, multi-center, and bigger-sample studies need to be included in the future to further verify the results.

CONTEXT: ß-Carotene, which is derived from most fruits and vegetables, is the most common type of carotenes. Existing studies have demonstrated that ß-carotene is associated with some positive health outcomes. However, results about the effects of supplemental ß-carotene on cancer are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between supplemental ß-carotene intake and the risk of cancers. DATA SOURCES: Eight databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wangfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database) were systematically searched until September 2022. DATA EXTRACTION: Only reports from randomized controlled trials in which an association between supplemental ß-carotene intake and the risk of cancer was found were included in the meta-analysis. DATA ANALYSIS: A total of 18 eligible studies based on 8 different randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analysis, with varying sample sizes from 391 to 39 876 participants. There was no significant association between supplemental ß-carotene intake and overall cancer incidence rate after synthesizing all the results (risk ratio [RR]: 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99-1.05). Results from subgroup analysis indicated that intake of supplemental ß-carotene significantly increased the risk of lung cancer (RR: 1.19; 95%CI: 1.08-1.32), whereas no significant associations were observed for other site-specific cancers. In addition, smokers and the subgroup of participants with only low-dose ß-carotene intake had a risk increment of cancer if they took supplemental ß-carotene (RR: 1.16; 95%CI: 1.05-1.29). CONCLUSION: ß-Carotene supplementation has no beneficial or harmful effect on cancer incidence; moreover, it might have potentially harmful effects on lung cancer, especially for people who smoke. On the basis of the evidence from this study, supplemental intake of ß-carotene is not recommended for preventing cancer, and the establishment of a tolerable upper intake level of ß-carotene should be considered.

Objective:To perform a meta-analysis of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effects of curcumin supplementation with different formulations on anthropometric and cardiometabolic indices in patients with metabolism-related diseases (MRDs). Methods: Six databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China national knowledge internet (CNKI), Wanfang and China Biology Medicine (CBM), were systematically searched to find relevant articles from 2011 to July 2021. The effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Between-study heterogeneity was assessed using I2. Subgroup analysis was conducted to find possible sources of heterogeneity. Curcumin formulations in this study were divided as low bioavailability, high bioavailability and nanocurcumin. Results: Of the retrieved 1585 articles, 31 were included in the final analysis. Combined effect sizes suggested a significant effect of curcumin supplementation on reduced body weight (BW) (WMD: -0.94 kg, 95% CI: -1.40, -0.47) and body mass index (BMI) (WMD: -0.40 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.60, -0.19), respectively. The results also showed significant improvements of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (WMD: -0.50 mg/dL, 95% CI: -0.72, -0.28), glycosylated hemoglobin (Hb1Ac) (WMD: -0.42%, 95% CI: -0.57, -0.26), insulin (INS) (WMD: -1.70 µIU/mL, 95%CI: -2.03, -1.38), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (WMD: -0.71, 95%CI: -1.11, -0.31), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (WMD: 1.73 mg/dL, 95%CI: 0.78, 2.68) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) (WMD: -1.11, 95%CI: -2.16, -0.05). Nanocurcumin showed a greater reduction in FPG (WMD: -1.78 mg/dL, 95% CI: -2.49, -1.07), INS (WMD: -1.66 µIU/mL, 95% CI: -3.21, -0.11), TC (WMD: -12.64 mg/dL (95% CI: -23.72, -1.57) and LDL-C (WMD: -8.95 mg/dL, 95% CI: -16.51, -1.38). The dose-effect analysis showed that there were trends of first rising and then falling between the supplemented curcumin dose and BW, BMI, LDL-C, Hb1Ac, which were clearly distinguished at 80 mg/d due to the strong effect of nanocurcumin on outcomes. A slow upward trend between the dose of curcumin supplementation and HDL-C. No relationships between dose and outcomes were found for FPG and insulin, except for nanocurcumin at 80 mg/d. Conclusions: Our study showed some significant beneficial effects of curcumin supplementation on improving BW, BMI, and the levels of FPG, Hb1Ac, HOMA-IR, HDL-C and Hs-CRP in patients with MRDs. Nanocurcumin may have a greater effect on the reduction of FPG, INS, TC and LDL-C than other curcumin formulations. Considering the potential bias and limitations of studies included, further quality studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these results.

ß-carotene is widely available in plant-based foods, while the efficacy of ß-carotene supplementation on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains controversial. Hence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on randomized controlled trials to investigate the associations between ß-carotene supplementation and CVD risk as well as mortality. We conducted literature searches across eight databases and screened the publications from January 1900 to March 2022 on the topic of ß-carotene treatments and cardiovascular outcomes. There were 10 trials and 16 reports included in the meta-analysis with a total of 182,788 individuals enrolled in the study. Results from the random-effects models indicated that ß-carotene supplementation slightly increased overall cardiovascular incidence (RR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.08) and was constantly associated with increased cardiovascular mortality (RR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.19). Subgroup analyses suggested that, when ß-carotene treatments were given singly, a higher risk of cardiovascular outcomes was observed (RR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.12). In addition, cigarettes smoking was shown to be a risk behavior associated with increased cardiovascular incidence and mortality in the ß-carotene intervention group. In sum, the evidence of this study demonstrated that ß-carotene supplementation had no beneficial effects on CVD incidence and potential harmful effects on CVD mortality. Further studies on understanding the efficacy of multivitamin supplementation in nutrient-deficient or sub-optimal populations are important for developing the tolerable upper intake level for ß-carotene of different age and sex groups.

RESUMEN

The incidence of stomach diseases is very high, which has a significant impact on human health. Damaged gastric mucosa is more vulnerable to injury, leading to bleeding and perforation, which eventually aggravates the primary disease. Therefore, the protection of gastric mucosa is crucial. However, existing drugs that protect gastric mucosa can cause nonnegligible side effects, such as hepatic inflammation, nephritis, hypoacidity, impotence, osteoporotic bone fracture, and hypergastrinemia. Autophagy, as a major intracellular lysosome-dependent degradation process, plays a key role in maintaining intracellular homeostasis and resisting environmental pressure, which may be a potential therapeutic target for protecting gastric mucosa. Recent studies have demonstrated that autophagy played a dual role when gastric mucosa exposed to biological and chemical factors. More indepth studies are needed on the protective effect of autophagy in gastric mucosa. In this review, we focus on the mechanisms and the dual role of various biological and chemical factors regulating autophagy, such as Helicobacter pylori, virus, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. And we summarize the pathophysiological properties and pharmacological strategies for the protection of gastric mucosa through autophagy.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of proximal and distal acupoint catgut-embedding on the contents of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α) in the uterus, serum Interleukin-2 (IL-2) contents and splenic natural killer (NK) cell activity in primary dysmenorrhea (PD) rats,so as to explore the different effects of proximal and distal acupoint catgut-embedding on PD rats. METHODS: Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, model, proximal catgut-embedding and distal catgut-embedding groups, with 8 rats in each group. The PD model was established by subcutaneous injection of estradiol ben-zoate (0.5 mg/rat on the first day and 10th day, and 0.2 mg/rat from the 2nd to the 9th day) and intraperitoneal injection of oxytocin (2 U/rat, on the 11th day). Catgut-embedding was applied at bilateral "Guanyuan"(CV4) and "Ciliao"(BL32) in the proximal catgut-embedding group, and bilateral "Sanyinjiao" (SP6) and "Diji"(SP8) in the distal catgut-embedding group. After the treatment, the body writhing times in 30 min and uterine mass were recorded, PGE2 and PGF2αin uterus and IL-2 in serum were assayed by using ELISA, the activity of NK cell in the spleen was detected using MTT colorimetry. RESULTS: Following modeling, the body writhing times of the model group was increased than that of the control group (P<0.01); After interventions, the body writhing times were decreased in the proximal and distal catgut-embedding groups than those of the model group (P<0.01). Compared with the control group, the uterine mass and uterus PGF2α content were increased (P<0.01), while uterus PGE2, serum IL-2 and splenic NK cell activity were decreased (P<0.01) in the model group. After interventions, the uterine mass and uterus PGF2α were down-regulated (P<0.01, P<0.05), while the contents of uterus PGE2, serum IL-2 and splenic NK cell activity up-regulated (P<0.01) in the proximal and distal catgut-embedding groups in contrast to the model group. The content of uterus PGF2α was down-regulated (P<0.05) and splenic NK cell activity was up-regulated (P<0.01) in the proximal catgut-embedding group than those of the distal catgut-embedding group. CONCLUSION: Both proximal and distal acupoint catgut-embeding can increase PGE2 and decrease PGF2α in the uterus, increase the level of serum IL-2 and the activity of NK cells in the spleen in PD model rats, thereby achieving analgesic effect. The effect of proximal catgut-embedding is better than that of distal catgut-embedding.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Shen-Ling-Bai-Zhu Powder (SLBZP) is a classic traditional Chinese medical formula that has been used for several decades in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. Whether SLBZP is best employed as single agent or adjunctive therapy has yet to be determined as does the mechanism whereby SLBZP exerts its anti-tumor effects. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the effects of SLBZP alone and in combination with Cytoxan (CTX) on tumor growth, malignant cell apoptosis and Akt/Nuclear Factor kappa B (NF-КB) signaling in a murine model of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-four adult mice developed HCC following subcutaneous inoculation with H22 hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Seven days later, all received chemotherapy with CTX (200mg/kg) once. Mice were then randomized into eight study groups (N=8/group). Three groups were treated with different concentrations of SLBZP alone (6.00, 3.00, 1.5g/kg), three with SLBZP (6.00, 3.00, 1.5g/kg) plus CTX (20mg/kg), one with CTX (20mg/kg) alone (positive control), and one with physiologic saline (untreated, negative control). All groups were treated for 14 days. Tumor size, histology and serum or tissue levels and/or mRNA expression of PDGF-BB, VEGF, Ang-1, Ang-2, NF-КB, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2); B-cell lymphoma-extra large (Bcl-xL); X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP), Survivin, Caspase-3, Caspase-9, Caspase-7, Akt and phosphorylated Akt expression were documented at the end of treatment. RESULTS: Compared to untreated negative controls, tumor sizes were decreased in the CTX alone, SLBZP (M)+CTX and SLBZP (H)+CTX groups (-52%,-53% and -58% respectively). Tumor cell density was decreased in all treated groups but most apparent in the SLBZP (H)+CTX group. Electron microscopic evidence of apoptosis was also most apparent in this group. Serum and/or tissue levels and expression of PDGF-BB, VEGF, Ang-1, Ang-2, their downstream signaling proteins and anti-apoptotic markers were lowest and pro-apoptotic markers highest in SLBZP (H)+CTX treated mice. CONCLUSIONS: In this chemotherapy-induced animal model of HCC, SLBZP was most efficacious as adjunctive therapy and appears to act by inhibiting tumor growth promoters and anti-apoptotic proteins while enhancing pro-apoptotic proteins.

BACKGROUND: Tao-Hong-Si-Wu decoction (THSWD) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that has been used for centuries in the treatment of Chinese patients with chronic liver disease. Recently, THSWD has been reported to alter vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced angiogenesis, raising the possibility that in addition to its anti-inflammatory properties; THSWD might also inhibit hepatic blood flow associated fibrosis. AIM: To document the effects of THSWD on hepatic necroinflammatory disease activity, fibrosis and VEGF signaling in a murine model of chronic liver disease. METHODS: Sixty adult mice were equally divided into six study groups. Five groups were exposed to subcutaneous carbon tetrachloride (0.1 ml/10 g BW) for six weeks. Three of the five groups were treated with different concentrations of THSWD (4.25, 8.50, 17.00 g/kg), one with 0.1mg/kg of Colchicine (positive control), and one with physiologic saline (negative control). Mice in the sixth group were not exposed to CCl4 and remained untreated (healthy controls). Liver enzymes/function tests, hyaluronic acid and laminin levels were measured in serum, and hepatic histology, VEGF, Flt-1 and kinase insert domain-containing receptor (KDR), Akt and phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) expression were documented in liver tissue at the end of treatment. RESULTS: Hepatic necroinflammatory disease activity and fibrosis were significantly attenuated in THSWD treated mice in a dose dependent manner. These beneficial results were similar and often exceeded those achieved with Colchicine. In addition, VEGF, Flt-1, KDR, Akt and pAkt mRNA and protein expression were reduced in TSHWD treated mice. CONCLUSIONS: In this animal model of chronic liver disease, THSWD decreased hepatic necroinflammatory disease and fibrosis. Inhibition of VEGF expression and downstream signaling were associated with these findings. Further studies with this and other TCMs as treatment for chronic liver disease are warranted.
