RESUMEN

Homogeneous Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2) serves as a high-efficiency conditioning method for sludge dewatering due to the generation of strong oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (OH). However, high dose of ferric salts produces iron-rich dewatered sludge and decrease sludge organic matters, which will not be conducive to the subsequent disposal and reutilization. Considering advantages of Fe3O4 as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, Fe3O4-activated H2O2 (Fe3O4 + H2O2) in this study was adopted to improve sludge deep-dewatering. Reduction efficiency of the bound water (71.3 %) after Fe3O4 + H2O2 treatment (after a reaction time of 30 min) were much higher than those in the Fe2++H2O2 treatment. Especially, the moisture content of treated sludge cake by Fe3O4 + H2O2 remarkably decreased from 86.4 % to 61.3 %. Improvement mechanism of sludge dewatering after Fe3O4 + H2O2 treatment mainly included electrostatic neutralization, reactive radical oxidation, and skeleton building by analysis of contribution factors. The generation of H+ in acidification could neutralize the negatively charged compounds to promote sludge hydrophobicity. Meanwhile reactive radicals generated from Fe3O4 + H2O2 destroyed sludge extracellular polymeric substances and cell structure to release intracellular water. Furthermore, Fe3O4 as a skeleton builder could reconstruct destructive sludge flocs and form new dewatering channels. Finally, low Fe leaching content and recoverability of Fe3O4 effectively will decrease environmental implication.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To describe the epidemiological characteristics and medication overview of HFMD in Guangzhou and analyze the factors of length of stay (LOS) based on TCM usage. Method: From January 1, 2014, to June 30, 2019, clinical data of HFMD (ICD-10 B08.401) as the initial diagnosis, based on HIS of five medical institutions for outpatient and inpatient cases, was collected. The inpatient cases of the five hospitals in Guangzhou were utilized for hospitalization analysis. Information extracted from the warehouse was standardized. Descriptive analysis was used for baseline characteristics, medication usage, and inpatient characteristics. Potential factors were analyzed by bivariate analysis. COX regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis for calculating HRs and 95% CIs were adopted to determine the predictors of LOS. Stratified COX regression was applied to analyze the relationship between predictors and LOS and to calculate interaction. Results: A total of 14172 patients with HFMD were included. It showed that HFMD would occur in males, infants, and summer. Cause and symptoms are the two aspects of conventional Western medicine treatments, while TCM treatment of HFMD took clearing heat and detoxification as the basic principle. Inpatients with HFMD were divided into two groups by the use ratio of TCM. Age, season, and disease severity were possible correlated factors of LOS, extrapolating from their disparity in distribution. By stratified Cox regression, three factors following presented as possible contributions to shortening LOS, including TCM ≥ 0.1 (HR = 1.79, 95% CI (1.67-1.92), P < 0.01), winter (HR = 1.28, 95% CI (1.12-1.47)), P < 0.01), mild HFMD (HR = 1.93, 95% CI (1.69-2.22), P < 0.01). Additive interaction of TCM use and disease severity was significant (RERI = 1.014 (0.493-1.534), P < 0.01). Conclusion: Young children and high temperature were the risk factors of HFMD infection, which suggests that increasing surveillance for susceptible particular-age individuals and season is indispensable. Favorable factors to decrease LOS included a higher proportion of TCM use, mild HFMD, and onset in winter. The proportion of TCM use had additive interaction with disease severity, indicating that TCM may have antiviral and other biological effects on HFMD. Increasing the proportion of TCM use was probably beneficial to shortening LOS.

RESUMEN

With the continuing progress in space exploration, a new and perplexing condition related to spaceflight ocular syndrome has emerged in the past four decades. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has named this condition "spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome" (SANS). This article gives an overview of the current research about SANS and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by analyzing the existing publications on PubMed and CNKI and reports from NASA about SANS, summarizing the potential pathogenesis of SANS and physical interventions for treating SANS, and discussing the feasibility of treating SANS with TCM. Due to the unique characteristics of the space environment, it is infeasible to conduct large-scale human studies of SANS. SANS may be the result of the interaction of multiple factors, including inflammation and fluid displacement in the optic nerve sheath and cerebrospinal fluid. We should pay attention to SANS. Visual function is not only related to the health of astronauts but also closely related to space operations. TCM has antioxidative stress and antiapoptotic effects and is widely used for optic nerve diseases. TCM has great potential to prevent SANS.

RESUMEN

This study provided a novel pathway to develop activated carbon with enhanced adsorption performance via feedstock pretreatment by fungi. The growth of Pleurotus ostreatus on cottonseed husks offered this feedstock an advantageous pore size for porous carbon making. The prepared activated carbons derived from cottonseed husks (CSH-ACs) during different fungal growth periods exhibited extraordinary performance than commercial activated carbon for sulfanilamide adsorptive removal. Their experimental data of adsorption capacities for sulfanilamide were 139.43, 146.15, and 146.16 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption behaviors of sulfanilamide on CSH-ACs were evaluated by kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic models. Pore filling, hydrogen-bond forming and π-π staking interactions all contributed to the rapid sulfanilamide removal. The microporous-mesoporous structure, stronger hydrophilicity, and richer functional groups moieties owing to the lignocellulose decomposition in the plant wall significantly strengthened the adsorption process on the microbial-mediated activated carbon. The effects of pH and water impurities (H2PO4-, CO32-, SO42-, Cl-, and humic acid) on sulfanilamide removal were investigated by a single factor experimental design. Results indicated that CSH-ACs were suitable for sulfanilamide removal in actual wastewater treatment with wide pH adaptability and resilience to interference.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history of treating glaucoma with remarkable effects, but there is no clear conclusion on its mechanism. METHODS: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to analyze the mechanism and targets of TCM in the treatment of glaucoma, and baicalein was used to treat chronic ocular hypertension animal models rats for observation. RESULTS: The results of animal experiments showed that baicalein could significantly reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in a rat model of chronic ocular hypertension and protect the structure of the retina and optic nerve, as shown by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Reducing the apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) by upregulating the expression of the antiapoptotic protein BCL-2 is basically consistent with the results of molecular docking. In the network pharmacology analysis, many key proteins of biological pathways involved in the herbal therapeutic processes in glaucoma, such as threonine kinase 1 (AKT1, core protein of PI3K/AKT signaling), tumor protein p53 (TP53, a tumor suppressor gene coding tumor protein P53), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3, core protein of JAK/STAT signaling), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 17 (IL-17, proinflammatory factors), were identified. Their interactions built complicated chain reactions in the process of glaucoma. CONCLUSION: By combining the analysis of network pharmacology and animal experimental results, baicalein could effectively improve the symptoms of glaucoma and reduce RGC apoptosis, suggesting that the potential mechanism of TCM in treating glaucoma is related to regulating inflammation and cellular immunity and reducing apoptosis.

RESUMEN

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness globally. Qidengmingmu Capsule (QC) is a Chinese patent medicine used to treat DR, but the molecular mechanism of the treatment remains unknown. In this study, we identified and validated potential molecular mechanisms involved in the treatment of DR with QC via network pharmacology and molecular docking methods. The results of Ingredient-DR Target Network showed that 134 common targets and 20 active ingredients of QC were involved. According to the results of enrichment analysis, 2307 biological processes and 40 pathways were related to the treatment effects. Most of these processes and pathways were important for cell survival and were associated with many key factors in DR, such as vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGFA), hypoxia-inducible factor-1A (HIF-1Α), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα). Based on the results of the PPI network and KEGG enrichment analyses, we selected AKT1, HIF-1α, VEGFA, TNFα and their corresponding active ingredients for molecular docking. According to the molecular docking results, several key targets of DR (including AKT1, HIF-1α, VEGFA, and TNFα) can form stable bonds with the corresponding active ingredients of QC. In conclusion, through network pharmacology methods, we found that potential biological mechanisms involved in the alleviation of DR by QC are related to multiple biological processes and signaling pathways. The molecular docking results also provide us with sound directions for further experiments.

RESUMEN

Tissue culture seedlings of Bletilla striata were treated with MeJA, SA and two kinds of endophytic fungi in order to study the effects of those treatments on the physiology and total phenols content. The method of tissue culture was used to culture seeds into seedlings, and then different treatments were applied on them to observe and measure the changes of physiology and total phenols content. We find that the growth of seedlings treated with SA was poor, which treated with 40 µmol•L⁻¹ MeJA, 50 mL•L⁻¹ Hypocrea koningii and 10 mL•L⁻¹ Trichoderma koningiopsis showed better. The activity of SOD, POD and CAT was at a high level under SA treatment of each concentration. The activity of SOD and POD increased as the rise of MeJA concentration, while CAT was highest at 80 µmol•L⁻¹. The activity of SOD and POD increased with the increasing of the concentration of H. koningii treatment, while CAT reached the highest at 1 mL•L⁻¹. The activity of SOD, POD and CAT increased first and then declined with the concentration of T. koningiopsis increasing, and the highest activity was at 10 mL•L⁻¹. The contents of MDA, soluble protein and proline were increased more or less under the four treatments. The content of polysaccharide was at a high level under 60 µmol•L⁻¹ of MeJA. The total phenols content was at a high level under 40 µmol•L⁻¹ of MeJA, 60 µmol•L⁻¹ of SA, 1 mL•L⁻¹ of H. koningii and 10 mL•L⁻¹ of T. koningiopsis. The results indicated that the addition of exogenous MeJA, SA and endophytic fungi under certain concentrations could improve the resistance of B. striata and increase the content of total phenols at some degree and the trearment of MeJA, H. koningii and T. koningiopsis could promote the growth of seedlings under certain concentrations.
