RESUMEN

Declining estrogen production in postmenopausal females causes osteoporosis in which the resorption of bone exceeds the increase in bone formation. Although clinical drugs are currently available for the treatment of osteoporosis, sustained medication use is accompanied by serious side effects. Corydalis bungeana Herba, a famous traditional Chinese herb listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission, constitutes various traditional Chinese Medicine prescriptions, which date back to thousands of years. One of the primary active components of C. bungeana Turcz. is Corynoline (Cor), a plant isoquinoline alkaloid derived from the Corydalis species, which possesses bone metabolism disease therapeutic potential. The study aimed at exploring the effects as well as mechanisms of Cor on osteoclast formation and bone resorption. TRAcP staining, F-actin belt formation, and pit formation were employed for assessing the osteoclast function. Western blot, qPCR, network pharmacology, and docking analyses were used for analyzing the expression of osteoclast-associated genes and related signaling pathways. The study focused on investigating how Cor affected OVX-induced trabecular bone loss by using a mouse model. Cor could weaken osteoclast formation and function by affecting the biological receptor activators of NF-κB and its ligand at various concentrations. Mechanistically, Cor inhibited the NF-κB activation, and the MAPKs pathway stimulated by RANKL. Besides, Cor enhanced the protein stability of the Nrf2, which effectively abolished the RANKL-stimulated ROS generation. According to an OVX mouse model, Cor functions in restoring bone mass, improving microarchitecture, and reducing the ROS levels in the distal femurs, which corroborated with its in vitro antiosteoclastogenic effect. The present study indicates that Cor may restrain osteoclast formation and bone loss by modulating NF-κB/MAPKs and Nrf2 signaling pathways. Cor was shown to be a potential drug candidate that can be utilized for the treatment of osteoporosis.

To address the challenges of repetitive and low-texture features in intraoral endoscopic images, a novel methodology for stitching panoramic half jaw images of the oral cavity is proposed. Initially, an enhanced self-attention mechanism guided by Time-Weighting concepts is employed to augment the clustering potential of feature points, thereby increasing the number of matched features. Subsequently, a combination of the Sinkhorn algorithm and Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) is utilized to maximize the count of matched feature pairs, accurately remove outliers and minimize error. Last, to address the unique spatial alignment among intraoral endoscopic images, a wavelet transform and weighted fusion algorithm based on dental arch arrangement in intraoral endoscopic images have been developed, specifically for use in the fusion stage of intraoral endoscopic images. This enables the local oral images to be precisely positioned along the dental arch, and seamless stitching is achieved through wavelet transformation and a gradual weighted fusion technique. Experimental results demonstrate that this method yields promising outcomes in panoramic stitching tasks for intraoral endoscopic images, achieving a matching accuracy of 84.6% and a recall rate of 78.4% in a dataset with an average overlap of 35%. A novel solution for panoramic stitching of intraoral endoscopic images is provided by this method.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the incidence of and factors associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) among resident physicians in standardised training at eight traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals in China. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was administered to resident physicians in their first to third years of standardised training at eight TCM hospitals. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 514 resident physicians in standardised training were included. MEASURES: The questionnaire consisted of two sections, namely: section A collected basic information, and section B included the four-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4), the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Rome IV criteria for IBS. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were constructed to assess the associations of age, sex, body mass index, stress, depression, anxiety, sleep quality and IBS. RESULTS: Of the included resident doctors, 77.2% were female, 20.4% were obese or underweight and 8.6% had symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of IBS. There were no statistically significant differences in lifestyle factors (night shift work, overtime work or working efficiency during the COVID-19 pandemic) between patients with IBS and participants without IBS (hereafter, non-IBS participants) (p=0.429, p=0.572 or p=0.464, respectively). Notably, compared with non-IBS participants, patients with IBS had significantly higher mean scores on the PSS-4 and PHQ-4 (p=0.028 and p=0.012, respectively); however, there was not a significant difference in PSQI scores between these two groups (p=0.079). Depression symptoms were significantly associated with IBS (unadjusted OR 0.498, 95% CI 0.265 to 0.935, p=0.030). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that IBS is common among resident physicians in standardised training. Future studies should investigate emotional distress, especially stress and depression, in the development of prevention or treatment of IBS.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of inflammatory response on tumor development and therapeutic response is of significant importance in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The customization of specialized prognostication approaches and the exploration of supplementary treatment options hold critical clinical implications in relation to the inflammatory response. METHODS: In the present study, unsupervised clustering was implemented on TCGA-KIRC tumors using transcriptome profiles of inflammatory response genes, which was then validated in two ccRCC datasets (E-MATB-1980 and ICGC) and two immunotherapy datasets (IMvigor210 and Liu et al.) via SubMap and NTP algorithms. Combining co-expression and LASSO analyses, inflammatory response-based scoring system was defined, which was evaluated in pan-cancer. RESULTS: Three reproducible inflammatory response subtypes (named IR1, IR2 and IR3) were determined and independently verified, each exhibiting distinct molecular, clinical, and immunological characteristics. Among these subtypes, IR2 had the best OS outcomes, followed by IR3 and IR1. In terms of anti-angiogenic agents, sunitinib may be appropriate for IR1 patients, while axitinib and pazopanib may be suitable for IR2 patients, and sorafenib for IR3 patients. Additionally, IR1 patients might benefit from anti-CTLA4 therapy. A scoring system called IRscore was defined for individual ccRCC patients. Patients with high IRscore presented a lower response rate to anti-PD-L1 therapy and worse prognostic outcomes. Pan-cancer analysis demonstrated the immunological features and prognostic relevance of the IRscore. CONCLUSION: Altogether, characterization of inflammatory response subtypes and IRscore provides a roadmap for patient risk stratification and personalized treatment decisions, not only in ccRCC, but also in pan-cancer.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Qi-supplementing and Yin-nourishing Chinese patent medicine in the treatment of early diabetic nephropathy(DN) by network Meta-analysis to explore the Chinese patent medicine with optimal efficacy and provide references for preventing renal deterioration and delaying the progression of early DN. Eight databases, including CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, were searched for clinical randomized controlled trial(RCT) of Qi-supplementing and Yin-nourishing Chinese patent medicines in the treatment of early DN. After the literature mee-ting the inclusion criteria was screened, the quality of the literature was evaluated using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, and network Meta-analysis was performed using the BUGSnet package in R 4.2.1. Seventy-two research articles with a sample size of 6 344 cases were included, involving eight Chinese patent medicines and seven outcome indicators. The results of the network Meta-analysis showed that(1)in terms of improving urinary albumin excretion rate(UAER), Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional treatment were superior to conventional treatment, and Qiyao Xiaoke Capsules + conventional treatment was optimal.(2)In terms of reducing serum crea-tinine(Scr), Bailing Capsules + conventional treatment had superior efficacy.(3)In terms of reducing 24-hour urine total protein(24hUTP), Shenyan Kangfu Tablets + conventional treatment and Jinshuibao Capsules + conventional treatment had equivalent efficacy, and Shenyan Kangfu Tablets + conventional treatment was superior.(4)In terms of improving fasting blood glucose(FBG), Shenyan Kangfu Tablets + conventional treatment had superior efficacy.(5)In terms of improving total cholesterol(TC), Qiyao Xiaoke Capsules +conventional treatment had superior efficacy.(6)In terms of reducing triglyceride(TG), Bailing Capsules + conventional treatment had superior efficacy.(7)In terms of safety, the occurrence of adverse reactions was reported in seven interventions, but due to the large clinical heterogeneity, the quantitative analysis could not be performed. Overall, Qi-supplementing and Yin-nourishing Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional treatment were superior to conventional treatment alone in the treatment of early DN. The results showed that Qi-supplementing and Yin-nourishing Chinese patent medicines combined with conventional treatment had good clinical efficacy, and they could significantly reduce renal function indicators such as UAER, Scr, and 24hUTP, and reduce blood sugar and blood lipid, which can provide evidence-based support for the treatment of early DN. However, due to the differences in the quantity and quality of the included research articles, large-sample, multi-center, high-quality studies are still needed for further verification.

Sustained nitrate accumulation in surface water ecosystem was continuously grabbing public attention. Autotrophic denitrification by electron supplement has been applied to overcome the requirement of carbon source, thus the new problem that how to improve the efficiency of extracellular electrons transfer to denitrifiers comes to us. The addition of exogenous electron mediators has been considered as an important strategy to promote extracellular electrons transfer in reductive metabolism. To date, knowledge is lacking about the promoting effects and pathways in nitrate removal by electron mediators. Here, we fully investigated the performance of nitrogen removal as well as quantified the characteristics of biofilms with six electron mediators (riboflavin, flavin mononucleotide, AQS, AQDS, biochar and Nano-Fe3O4) treating in microbial electrolytic cell system. The six electron mediators promoted nitrate removal rate by 76.03-90.43 % with electron supplement. The growth and activity of cathodic biofilm, conductive nanowires generation and electrochemically active substance synthesis of extracellular polymeric substances were facilitated by electron mediator addition. Electrochemical analysis revealed that conductivity and redox capacity of cathodic biofilm was increased for accelerating electron transfer. Moreover, they upregulated the abundance of denitrifying communities and denitrifying genes accordingly. Their denitrification efficiency varied due to their promotion ability in the above different strategies and conductive characteristics, and the efficiency could be concluded as: Nano-Fe3O4 > riboflavin > flavin mononucleotide > AQS ≈ AQDS > biochar. This study revealed how addition of electron mediators promoted denitrification with electron supplement, and compared their promoting efficiency in several main aspects.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the efficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with A. annua allergens in patients with seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis over two pollen seasons. METHODS: Seventy patients with moderate-severe seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis were divided evenly into the SLIT and control groups. The SLIT last from 3 months before the summer-autumn pollen season in 2021 till the end of the summer-autumn pollen season in 2022. The daily individual symptom score, total rhinoconjunctivitis symptom score (dTRSS), total medication score (dTMS), combined score of medication and rhinoconjunctivitis symptom (dCSMRS), visual analog scale (VAS) score, and adverse events (AEs) were evaluated. RESULTS: The average pollen concentration in 2022 was twice that previous two-year during the pollen season. Fifty-six patients completed treatments (SLIT group: 29, control group: 27). Compared with baseline, the individual symptoms, dTRSS, dTMS, dCSMRS, and VAS scores of SLIT group declined in 2021. After 16 months of SLIT, all efficacy indexes in 2022 were still lower than baseline and equivalent to those in 2021. In control group, the efficacy indexes in 2022 were higher than that in 2020 and 2021. The efficacy indexes of SLIT group were lower than those of control group in 2021 and 2022. SLIT is effective for both mono- and poly-sensitized patients. AEs incidence in SLIT group was 82.7% without severe AEs. CONCLUSIONS: The A. annua-SLIT can obtain efficacy and safety over two pollen seasons for patients with moderate-severe seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.

Fuzheng Huayu's (FZHY) formula ameliorated liver fibrosis in clinical and experimental practice. Based on the close link between fibrosis and inflammation, its anti-inflammatory effect and related mechanisms were explored in this present study. With the aid of the inflammatory macrophage model, FZHY significantly blocked nitrite accumulation without observable cytotoxicity due to its suppression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene and protein expressions in a concentration-depended manner. Proinflammatory mediators including IL-6, CD86, and CD40 were also restrained by FZHY. Interestingly, FZHY induced anti-inflammatory mediators heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) expressions simultaneously. Downregulation of iNOS and miR-155 and upregulation of PPAR-γ were also observed in CCl4-induced liver fibrosis mice upon FZHY administration. Mechanically, FZHY strikingly eliminated the phosphorylation of STAT1 and MAPK. Taken together, FZYH regulated the balance of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators partially via modulating STAT1/MAPK pathways and the miR-155/PPAR-γ axis.

Objective: The goal was to investigate the connection between neuroinflammation in the brain and serum inflammatory markers as Alzheimer's disease progressed. We also sought to determine whether electroacupuncture had an effect on inflammatory markers found in blood and other brain regions. Methods: As an animal model for AD, we used senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice. To examine the effects and probable mechanism of electroacupuncture, we used HE staining, immunofluorescence staining, western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Electroacupuncture therapy protected neurons, significantly downregulated the Iba-1 level in the hippocampus (p value was 0.003), frontal lobe cortex (p value was 0.042), and temporal lobe cortex (p value was 0.013) of the AD animal model, all of which had significantly lower levels of IL-6 (p value was 0.001), IL-1ß (p value was 0.001), and TNF-α (p value was 0.001) in their serum. Conclusion: The amounts of IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α detected in the serum were strongly linked to the levels discovered in the hippocampus and the frontal lobes of the brain, respectively. A better understanding of the electroacupuncture process as well as the course of Alzheimer's disease and the therapeutic benefits of electroacupuncture may be gained by using biomarkers such as serum inflammatory marker biomarkers.

(1) Background: Given that the most effective dose, optimal type, and most beneficial population for improving sleep with mindfulness-based movement (MBM) remains unknown, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis with moderator analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess these effects. (2) Methods: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO) were systematically searched for RCTs published through August 2021 for analysis. The risk of bias of the included studies was assessed with Review Manager 5.3, and the meta-analysis was performed in Stata 16.0. (3) Results: A meta-analysis of 61 RCTs with 2697 participants showed that MBM significantly improved sleep quality compared to controls (SMD = −0.794; 95% CI: −0.794 to −0.994, p < 0.001, I2 = 90.7%). Moderator analysis showed that a long-term MBM (SMD = −0.829; 95% CI: 0.945 to 0.712; p < 0.001) had a larger effect size on sleep than a short-term MBM (SMD = −0.714; 95% CI: 0.784 to 0.644; p < 0.001). Practicing at least twice per week (SMD = −0.793; 95% CI: −0.868 to −0.718; p < 0.001) was more effective compared to practicing once per week (SMD = −0.687; 95% CI: −0.804 to −0.570; p < 0.001). Studies with a total intervention time of more than 24 h also revealed better sleep quality improvement (SMD = −0.759; 95% CI: −0.865 to −0.653; p < 0.001). In addition, the healthy population and older adults gained more from MBM than the patients and younger adults. (4) Conclusions: MBM can effectively improve subjective sleep quality, and the optimal intervention dose of MBM can be utilized in future intervention studies to treat or improve sleep disturbance (MBM more than twice a week for more than three months, with a total intervention time of more than 24 h).

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism by which electroacupuncture (EA) upregulates triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) protein in the hippocampus of Alzheimer's disease (AD) model animals from the perspective of TREM2 DNA methylation. METHODS: In total, 24 eight-month-old senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice were divided into an (untreated) AD group (n = 8), donepezil group (receiving donepezil treatment, n = 8) or EA group (receiving an EA intervention, n = 8). A healthy control group comprising 8-month-old senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1 (SAMR1) mice (n = 8) was also included. Western blotting, bisulfite sequencing, and oxidative bisulfite sequencing were applied to test the relative expression of TREM2 protein and the methylation levels of the TREM2 gene. RESULTS: EA significantly upregulated the relative expression of TREM2 protein (p < 0.01), downregulated the 5-methylcytosine level (p < 0.01) and upregulated the 5-hydroxymethylcytosine level (p < 0.05) in the hippocampus. CONCLUSION: Downregulation of 5-methylcytosine levels and upregulation of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine levels in the TREM2 gene might be the mechanism by which EA promotes the expression of TREM2 protein.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), as one of most common dementia, mainly affects older people from the worldwide. In this study, we intended to explore the possible mechanism of improving cognitive function and protecting the neuron effect by electroacupuncture. METHOD: We applied senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice as AD animal model, used Morris water maze, HE staining, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing of gut microbiota and ELISA to demonstrate our hypothesis. RESULTS: electroacupuncture improved the learning and memory abilities in SAMP8 mice (P<0.05) and could protect the frontal lobe cortex and hippocampus of SAMP8 mice; electroacupuncture significantly decreased the expression of IL-1ß (P<0.01), IL-6 (P<0.01) and TNF-α (P<0.01 in hippocampus, P<0.05 in serum) in serum and hippocampus; electroacupuncture balanced the quantity and composition of gut microbiome, especially of the relative abundance in Delta-proteobacteria (P<0.05) and Epsilon-proteobacteria (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: electroacupuncture treatment could inhibit the peripheral and central nerve system inflammatory response by balancing the gut microbiota.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most serious public health concerns facing the world. Its characteristic feature is neuroinflammation due to microglial activation. Electroacupuncture is one of the therapies employed to improve the condition of patients with AD, although its mechanism of action is still to be determined. Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is a microglia-specific receptor that is involved in regulating neuroinflammation in AD. In this study, we applied senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 mice as the AD animal model, used the Morris water maze, and applied hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunofluorescence double staining, and Western blotting, to explore the effects and potential mechanisms of action of electroacupuncture. In summary, this study suggested that electroacupuncture treatment could improve the learning and memory abilities (p < 0.05) and protect neurons. These effects result from acupuncture could upregulate TREM2 expression in the hippocampus (p < 0.01), which was essential for the anti-inflammatory effects in the AD animal model. However, further studies are needed to conclusively demonstrate the mechanism of action of electroacupuncture in AD.

In the bioremediation of eutrophic water, a large number of aquatic plants will be produced. How to continue the reasonable disposition is the question that needs to be solved. In this paper, biomass carbon was prepared from aquatic plants, and the adsorption capacity of the biomass carbon on nitrogen and phosphorus in water was improved by magnesium modification. The characterization results of material properties showed that magnesium modification not only formed nanometer MgO sheets on the surface of biomass carbon to increase the specific surface area, but also introduced hydroxyl functional groups to promote the adsorption of ammonium nitrogen. The adsorption processes of modified biomass carbon on nitrates and ammonium nitrogen belonged to multi-layer adsorption, and the adsorption isotherms conformed to the Freundlich model. The adsorption mechanism of modified biomass carbon changed from single layer adsorption to multi-layer diffusion. The maximum adsorption capacity of the modified biomass carbon on nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and phosphorus were 5.66, 62.53, and 90.92 mg·g-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the modified biomass carbon on ammonium nitrogen is 178 times that of unmodified biomass carbon. When phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen coexist, the adsorption amounts of modified biomass carbon increase by 79.1%, 67.5%, and 47.1%, respectively. The results of this paper showed that the preparation of biomass carbon can realize the resource recovery of aquatic plants, and can be used for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution from water, which has good prospects for application.

Accumulating evidence suggests that improvements in osteogenesis and angiogenesis play an important role in repairing osteoporotic bone defects. Cinnamomum cassia (C. cassia), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is reported to show anabolic effects on osteoblasts. However, whether C. cassia could actually repair bone defects in osteoporotic conditions remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined treatment with Cinnamaldehyde (main oil isolated from the C. cassia) and ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) on bone formation and angiogenesis in critical size calvarial defects in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Using a previously established OVX model, 5 mm critical size calvarial defect was established in OVX rats. All OVX rats were then randomly divided into OVX group (OVX rats + empty defect), TCP group (OVX rats + ß-TCP), and CTCP group (Cinnamaldehyde 75 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks + ß-TCP). Twelve weeks after treatment, according to Micro-CT and HE staining, combination of Cinnamaldehyde and ß-TCP had an additive effect on bone regeneration compared with other groups (p < 0.05). Based on dynamic fluorochrome-labelling analysis, Cinnamaldehyde+ß-TCP continuously promoted new bone mineralization compared with other groups at each time point (p < 0.05). Microfil perfusion suggested that CTCP group showed more neovascularization compared with other groups (p < 0.05). Immunohistochemical assay supported the findings that Cinnamaldehyde+ß-TCP enhanced expression of OCN, VEGF and CD31. The present study demonstrated that combined treatment with Cinnamaldehyde and ß-TCP promoted bone formation and angiogenesis in osteoporotic bone defects, which provides a promising new strategy for repairing bone defects in osteoporotic conditions.

By now, the neurophysiological effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure and its underlying regulating mechanisms are not well manifested. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether acute long-term evolution (LTE) EMF exposure could modulate brain functional connectivity using regional homogeneity (ReHo) method and seed-based analysis on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We performed the LTE-EMF exposure experiment and acquired the resting-state brain activities before and after EMF exposure. Then we applied ReHo index to characterize the localized functional connectivity and seed-based method to evaluate the inter-regional functional connectivity. Statistical comparisons were conducted to identify the possible evidence of brain functional connectivity modulation induced by the acute LTE-EMF exposure. We found that the acute LTE-EMF exposure modulated localized intra-regional connectivity (p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected, voxel size ≥ 18) and inter-regional connectivity in some brain regions (p < 0.05, AlphaSim corrected, voxel size ≥ 18). Our results may indicate that the approaches relying on network-level inferences could provide deeper insight into the acute effect on human functional activity induced by LTE-EMF exposure. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to examine the effect of KDZ, on the BBB disruption in rat underwent MCAO and reperfusion. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (260-280 g) were subjected to 60 minutes MCAO followed by reperfusion. KDZ (4 mL/kg) was administrated before ischemia. The Evans blue extravasation, albumin leakage, brain water content, TJ proteins, caveolin-1, p-caveolin-1, Src, and p-Src were evaluated. Neurological scores, cerebral infarction, and CBF were assessed. The binding affinity of KDZ to Src was examined. RESULTS: I/R evoked a range of insults including Evans blue extravasation, albumin leakage, brain water content increase, CBF decrease, cerebral infarction, and neurological deficits, all of which were attenuated by KDZ. Meanwhile, KDZ inhibited TJ proteins down-expression, expression of caveolin-1, phosphorylation of caveolin-1 and Src after I/R. In addition, SPR revealed binding of KDZ to Src with high affinity. CONCLUSIONS: KDZ protects BBB from disruption and improves cerebral outcomes following I/R via preventing the degradation of TJ proteins, caveolin-1 expression, and inhibiting p-caveolin-1 and p-Src, which were most likely attributable to the ability of its main ingredients to bind to Src and inhibit its phosphorylation.

During the thermomechanical pulping (TMP) of spruce, hemicelluloses (mainly galactoglucomannans, GGMs) are released into the process water at relatively low concentrations that are currently impossible to efficiently recover. This paper examines the recovery of hemicelluloses precipitated from TMP process water via solubility reduction by adding antisolvents such as methanol, ethanol, and acetone. The phase separation was monitored by turbidity measurements. Gravimetric analysis, FTIR, GC-MS, UV spectroscopy, and ICP-OES were used to determine the yield, purity, and composition of the precipitates. Gel permeation chromatography and pulsed field-gradient self-diffusion NMR were used to measure the molecular mass distribution of the precipitates. Acetone was found to be the most efficient antisolvent, giving the highest yield at the lowest addition. The contents of lipophilic extractives and lignin impurities were below 0.5% and 1.6%, respectively, and the metal content was approximately 2% in the precipitates obtained with acetone.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and efficacy sustainable time of acupuncture in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: The non-randomized concurrent control trial was adopted. One hundred and ninety-three cases of KOA were divided into an immediate acupuncture group (group A, 97 cases) and a delayed acupunc-weeks at the end of treatment. In group B, the same acupuncture therapy was applied after waiting 4 weeks. The acupoints in the two groups were Liangqiu (ST 34), Dubi (ST 35), Zusanli (ST 36), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Yinlingquan (SP 9), Xuehai (SP 10), Xiyan (EX-LE 4), Xiyangguan (GB 33). WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMasters Universities Osteoarthritis) was used for the assessment of the primary index and VAS (visual analogue scale) was for the secondary index. The evaluation was accomplished by the patients at the beginning of trial, on the 4th and 8th weeks. In each group, 72 patients finished the trial and the data of the lost cases were included in the final data analysis. RESULTS: In the 4th week of trial, WOMAC score was (25. 8+/-22.0) in group A difference (P<0. 001). VAS scorewas (31. 8+/-24. and was (43.8+/-22.2) in group B, indicating the significant 6) in group A and was (56. 6 +/-25. 8) in group B, indicating very significant difference (P<0. 001). In the 8th week, the efficacy was reduced slightly in the follow-up of group A, but it was improved apparently as compared Acupuncture relieves joint pain and improves joint function obviously.by th patiieffr,a Mtaetfti-?an tf ri-with that before treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the conventional acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: Seventy-three cases of KOA were treated with the conventional acupuncture therapy at Liang-qiu (ST 34), Dubi (ST 35), Zusanli (ST 36), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Yinlingquan (SP 9), etc. The conventional acupuncture therapy lasted for 4 weeks (at least 3 treatments and less than 5 times each week). At the end of treatment, the follow-up visit lasted for 4 weeks. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were adopted for the efficacy assessments of the patients. RESULTS: Of 73 cases, 49 cases accomplished the trial. The data of the lost cases were included in the final data analysis. At the end of 4-week treatment and the follow-up visit, every score in VAS and WOMAC was decreased The conventional acupuncture therapy reduces the joint pain for apparently (P < 0.001, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: the patients with KOA and improves the joint function. The 4-week follow-up visit indicates that the efficacy of acupuncture is still sustained.
