RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Erythrophleum is a genus in the Fabaceae family. The genus contains only about 10 species, and it is best known for its hardwood and medical properties worldwide. Erythrophleum fordii Oliv. is the only species of this genus distributed in China. It has superior wood and can be used in folk medicine, which leads to its overexploitation in the wild. For its effective conservation and elucidation of the distinctive genetic traits of wood formation and medical components, we present its first genome assembly. DATA DESCRIPTION: This work generated ~ 160.8 Gb raw Nanopore whole genome sequencing (WGS) long reads, ~ 126.0 Gb raw MGI WGS short reads and ~ 29.0 Gb raw RNA-seq reads using E. fordii leaf tissues. The de novo assembly contained 864,825,911 bp in the E. fordii genome, with 59 contigs and a contig N50 of 30,830,834 bp. Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO) revealed 98.7% completeness of the assembly. The assembly contained 471,006,885 bp (54.4%) repetitive sequences and 28,761 genes that coded for 33,803 proteins. The protein sequences were functionally annotated against multiple databases, facilitating comparative genomic analysis.

Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) is a known drug target for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, a series of 1-amino-1H-imidazole-5-carboxamide derivatives with good inhibitory activity against BTK were selected to explore the structure-activity relationships of these BTK inhibitors (BTKIs). Furthermore, we concentrated on 182 prescriptions of Traditional Chinese Medicine with therapeutic effects on RA. 54 herbs with a frequency of ≥10 were counted to establish a database containing 4027 ingredients for virtual screening. Five compounds with relatively higher docking scores and better absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination and toxicity (ADMET) parameters were then selected for higher precision docking. The results demonstrated that the potentially active molecules form hydrogen bond interactions with the hinge region residues Met477, Glu475, glycine-rich P-loop residue Val416, Lys430 and DFG motif Asp539. In particular, they also interact with the key residues Thr474 and Cys481 of BTK. The molecular dynamics (MD) results demonstrated that all five compounds above could bind with BTK stably as its cognate ligand in dynamic conditions. This work identified several potential BTKIs using a computer-aided drug design approach and may provide crucial information for developing novel BTKIs.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the radix of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (RAS) is mainly used to replenish and invigorate the blood circulation. This study investigated anti-platelet aggregation activities were used by New Zealand rabbits, and high-performance liquid chromatography data were obtained to determine the spectrum-effect relationship for different commercial grades of RAS. Plasma and urine metabolites were examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the role of these metabolites in a rat model of blood deficiency (BD). Plasma and spleen metabolites were additionally examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography plus Q-Exactive tandem mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to clarify the mechanisms of RAS in treating BD. The third grade of RAS exhibited the best activity in replenishing and invigorating blood in vitro and in vivo. Ferulic acid, ligustilide, senkyunolide I, uridine, and guanine are quality markers of anti-platelet aggregation activity. Based on the metabolomics results, 19 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 12 potential metabolites were detected in urine. In lipidomics analyses, 73 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 112 potential biomarkers were screened in the spleen. RAS may restore lipid metabolism by regulating disorders of glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid metabolism, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid metabolism (thereby improving energy metabolism), and arachidonic acid metabolism (thereby promoting blood circulation). These results provide a deeper understanding of the effects of different grades of RAS and a scientific reference for the establishment of grading standards and for the clinical use of RAS.

Peganum harmala L. is a perennial herb of the Tribulus family and its aerial parts and seeds can be used as medicine in the traditional medicine of China. However, the differences in chemical components and antibacterial activity between different parts have not been reported. In this study, the chemical composition of the different parts of P. harmala was characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The antimicrobial activities of the different parts and some isolated components were also carried out on 12 bacterial strains and phytopathogenic fungi. The HPLC results revealed that the contents of harmine and harmaline in the seeds were higher than that in the aerial parts. A total of 94 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were tentatively identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS for the first time. The major components were methyl hexadecanoate, p-xylene, octane, (Z)-9-octadecanoate, ethylbenzene, methyl octadecanoate, ethyl hexadecanoate, and methyl tetradecanoate. At the concentration of 800 µg·mL-1, the methanol extracts of seeds showed stronger antimicrobial activities with a wide antimicrobial spectrum, inhibiting Escherichia coli (ATCC 24433), Xanthomonas oryzae (ACCC 11602), and Xanthomonas axonopodis with inhibitory rates of more than 90%. Furthermore, harmine and harmaline showed better antibacterial activities against all the bacteria. These findings indicated that alkaloids from P. harmala could account for antimicrobial activity, which could be used as lead molecules in the development of new antimicrobial drugs.

The radix of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (RAS) is widely used in medicinal and dietary applications in China, and has the function for replenishing and invigorating the blood, stopping pain and moistening the intestines. In this study, RAS from the main geoherb regions showed better efficacy in inhibiting Adenosine diphosphate- or arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation than those from non-geoherb regions. In addition, the HPLC fingerprints of 30 batches of RAS, as part of the comprehensive evaluation of RAS, were established and used for spectral efficiency to screen the quality markers for anti-platelet aggregation activities. Five compounds in RAS-senkyunolide I, uridine, guanine, ferulic acid and adenosine-were demonstrated to contribute significantly to the anti-platelet aggregation activity. These bioactive compounds, especially senkyunolide I and ferulic acid with stronger activities, could be used as quality markers of RAS for quality control of RAS.

Long chain acyl-coA synthase (acsl) family genes activate the conversion of long chain fatty acids into acyl-coA to regulate fatty acid metabolism. However, the evolutionary characteristics, tissue expression and nutritional regulation of the acsl gene family are poorly understood in fish. The present study investigated the molecular characterization, tissue expression and nutritional regulation of the acsl gene family in golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). The results showed that the coding regions of acsl1, acsl3, acsl4, acsl5 and acsl6 cDNA were 2091 bp, 2142 bp, 2136 bp, 1977 bp and 2007 bp, encoding 697, 714, 712, 659 and 669 amino acids, respectively. Five acsl isoforms divided into two branches, namely, acsl1, acsl5 and acsl6, as well as acsl3 and acsl4. The tissue expression distribution of acsl genes showed that acsl1 and acsl3 are widely expressed in the detected tissues, while acsl4, acsl5 and acsl6 are mainly expressed in the brain. Compared to the fish fed with lard oil diets, the fish fed with soybean oil exhibited high muscular C18 PUFA contents and acsl1 and acsl3 mRNA levels, as well as low muscular SFA contents and acsl4 mRNA levels. High muscular n-3 LC-PUFA contents, and acsl3, acsl4 and acsl6 mRNA levels were observed in the fish fed with fish oil diets compared with those of fish fed with lard oil or soybean oil diets. High n-3 LC-PUFA levels and DHA contents, as well as the acsl3, acsl4 and acsl6 mRNA levels were exhibited in the muscle of fish fed diets with high dietary n-3 LC-PUFA levels. Additionally, the muscular acsl3, acsl4 and acsl6 mRNA expression levels, n-3 LC-PUFA and DHA levels were significantly up-regulated by the increase of dietary DHA proportions. Collectively, the positive relationship among dietary fatty acids, muscular fatty acids and acsl mRNA, indicated that T. ovatus Acsl1 and Acsl3 are beneficial for the C18 PUFA enrichment, and Acsl3, Acsl4 and Acsl6 are for n-3 LC-PUFA and DHA enrichment. The acquisition of fish Acsl potential function in the present study will play the foundation for ameliorating the fatty acids nutrition in farmed fish products.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Rhei Radix et Rhizoma is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to attack stagnation, clear damp heat, relieve fire, cool blood, remove blood stasis and detoxify recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Modern pharmacological research has showed the extract of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma has the effect of lowering blood lipids, but the main active components and their mechanisms are still not clear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To reveal the lipid regulating components from Rhei Radix et Rhizoma and preliminarily explore their related action mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A rat model of dyslipidemia was established by administration of a high-fat emulsion via gavage, and the intervention effect of different polar fractions of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma on rat blood lipids as well as their related action mechanisms were preliminarily investigated. The effective components were inferred based on the above tests and identified by high performance liquid chromatography in comparison with reference substances, their UV absorption and high resolution mass spectra characteristics. RESULTS: The extract with dichloromethane fraction (DF) containing rhubarb free anthraquinones (aloe-emodin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol and physcion) significantly regulated the disordered blood lipids, lowered TC and LDLC, reversed TG and increased HDLC level in dyslipidemic rats and also showed lipid-lowering effect on lipid abnormalities in HepG2 cells. DF could alter the signaling pathways such as PPARα and AMPK implicated in lipid metabolism, and it down-regulated the mRNA expression of liver APOA2, SCD-1, HMGCR, SREBP-2 and PCSK9, but up-regulated the expressions of liver APOE, LPL and intestinal ABCG8. Besides, it could change the composition of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria in dyslipidemic rat feces samples. CONCLUSIONS: Rhubarb free anthraquinones have a significant regulating effect on the levels of serum TC, LDLC and HDLC, and probably possess a bidirectional regulatory effect on TG level in dyslipidemic rats. These effects may be achieved by regulating the expressions of the liver PPARα and SREBP target genes, PCSK9 and the intestinal ABCG8 genes, which are involved in blood cholesterol transport, liver lipid metabolism and intestinal cholesterol excretion. Rhubarb free anthraquinones may also affect energy metabolism by changing the composition of gut microflora related to lipid metabolism in dyslipidemic rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Danggui Buxue Decoction (DBT) is classical prescriptions, which contains two Traditional Chinese Medicines of Angelicae sinensis radix and Astragali radix. According to the preliminary work of our laboratory and numerous studies, it has been found that DBT has a therapeutic effect on diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the mechanisms underlying its action remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of DBT on kidney disease in diabetic mice and further explore its protective mechanism. METHODS: DN mice model was induced by high-fat fodder and streptozotocin (STZ). Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 6 compounds in DBT was carried out by HPLC, including calycosin-7-glucoside, ferulic acid, ononin, calycosin, formononetin, and levostilide A. Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining was used to determine the degree of kidney pathological damage. The UPLC-Q Exactive MS technique was used to analyze the lipids metabolism profile of kidneys samples and multiple statistical analysis methods were used to screen and identify biomarkers. Transcriptomics analyses were carried out using RNAseq. The possible molecular mechanism was unraveled by network pharmacology. RESULTS: Thirty-one significantly altered lipid metabolites were identified in the model group comparing with the control group. DBT improved aberrant expression of several pathways related to lipidomics, including glycerophospholipid metabolism and sphingolipid metabolism. Comprehensive analysis indicated that DBT intervention reduced the content of Cers, phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylcholines in mouse kidneys by downregulating the transcription level of Degs2 and Cers, reducing lipid accumulation and promoting Akt phosphorylation by upregulating the expression of Acers and Pdk1. Network pharmacology analysis showed that components in DBT, such as kaempferol, ferulic acid and astragaloside IV, could be responsible for the pharmacological activity of DN by regulating the AGE-RAGE, PI3K/Akt, MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways in diabetic complications. CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that DBT may improve DN by affecting insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and lipid accumulation.

Seabuckthorn contains flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, polysaccharides, and vitamins, which have anti-inflammation,anti-oxidation, liver protection, anti-cardiovascular disease, anti-aging, immune enhancing, anti-tumor, and anti-bacterial activities.We reviewed the papers focusing on the chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and utilization of seabuckthorn. The quality markers(Q-markers) of seabuckthorn were predicted and analyzed based on original plant phylogeny, chemical composition correlation, traditional medicinal properties, pharmacodynamic correlation, traditional and extended efficacy, pharmacokinetics, metabolic processes, and measurable components. With this review, we aim to provide theoretical reference for the quality control and quality standard establishment of seabuckthorn, so as to promote the rational exploitation and utilization of seabuckthorn resources, and improve the healthy and sustainable development of seabuckthorn industry.

Having benefited from the combination of different therapeutic modalities, functionalized nanoplatforms with synergistic strategies have aroused great interest in anticancer treatment. Herein, an engineered, a biodegradable hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticle (HMON)-based nanoplatform was fabricated for photothermal-enhanced chemotherapy of tumor. For the first time, we demonstrated that HMONs could serve as nanocarriers for co-delivering of both the paclitaxel and photothermal agent new indocyanine green (IR820), denoted as Paclitaxel/IR820@ HMONs-PEG. The as-prepared nanosystem exhibited a high paclitaxel-loading capacity of 28.4%, much higher than most paclitaxel-loaded nanoformulations. Furthermore, incorporating thioether bonds (S-S) into the HMONs' framework endowed them with GSH-responsive biodegradation behavior, leading to the controllable release of drugs under a tumor reducing microenvironment, and hindered the premature release of paclitaxel. Upon being irradiated with an NIR laser, the obtained co-delivery nanosystem exhibited great photothermal properties generated from IR820. The fabricated nanocomposites could significantly suppress tumor growth under NIR laser irradiation, as validated by in vitro and in vivo assessments. Combined with outstanding biocompatibility, the constructed nanosystem holds great potential in combinational antitumor therapy.

Bioimaging and biosensing have garnered interest in early cancer diagnosis due to the ability of gaining in-depth insights into cellular functions and providing a wide range of diagnostic parameters. Emerging 2D materials of multielement MXenes and monoelement black phosphorous nanosheets (BPNSs) with unique intrinsic physicochemical properties such as a tunable bandgap and layer-dependent fluorescence, high carrier mobility and transport anisotropy, efficient fluorescence quenching capability, desirable light absorption and thermoelastic properties, and excellent biocompatibility and biosafety properties provide promising nano-platforms for bioimaging and biosensing applications. In view of the growing attention on the rising stars of the post-graphene age in the progress of bioimaging and biosensing, and their common feature characteristics as well as complementarity for constructing complexes, the main objective of this review is to reveal the recent advances in the design of MXene or BPNS based nanoplatforms in the field of bioimaging and biosensing. The preparation and surface functionalization methods, biosafety, and other important aspects of bioimaging and biosensing applications of MXenes and BPNSs have been assessed systematically, along with highlighting the main challenges in further biomedical application. The review not only focuses on the advancements in 2D materials for use in bioimaging and biosensing but also assesses the possibility of their future potential in bioapplications.

In the present research, a bioremediation process was developed using solid complex bacterial agents (SCBA) through a combined two-step biodegradation process. Four isolated strains showed high efficiency for the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and the reduction of COD of the oily sludge, at 96.6% and 92.6%, respectively. The mixed strains together with bran prepared in form of SCBA exhibited improved performance compared to individual strains, all of which had an optimal temperature of around 35 °C. The use of SCBA provided advantages over commonly used liquid media for storage and transportation. The two-step process, consisting of firstly biosurfactant-assisted oil recovery and secondly biodegradation of the remaining TPH with SCBA, demonstrated the capability for treating oily sludge with high TPH content (>10 wt%) and short process period (60 days). The large-scale (5 tons oily sludge) field test, achieving a TPH removal efficiency of 93.8% and COD reduction of 91.5%, respectively, confirmed the feasibility and superiority of the technology for industrial applications.

Pinellia tuber (PTE, , , , , , , , ) is derived from the tuber of Pinellia ternata Breitenbach (Araceae), which is a crude drug used in traditional Japanese Kampo medicine for the purpose of antiemesis and expectoration. Since the separation of ephedrine from PTE in 1978, it has been listed as a PTE component in textbooks and internet information. Therefore, there are harmful effects on appropriate use in clinical practice because PTE is dealt with as a crude drug for doping target, and traditional Japanese Kampo medicine containing PTE must be carefully administered to the elderly. However, since the 1978 published report, there has not been any report on the isolation of ephedrine from PTE and the interpretation of biosynthesis remains questionable. In the present study, we analyzed the PTE samples in market distribution products by LC-TOF/MS. From the analysis of the result of ephedrine's m/z 148.113 [M + H-H2O]+, PTE was not detected (n = 55, detection limit: 0.5 ppb). Additionally, the tuber of P. tripartite (PTR, ), the tuber of P. pedatisecta (PPE, ), Arisaema Tuber (ART, ), and the tuber of Typhonium flagelliforme (TFI, ) that have a similar description to PTE were also not detected. Moreover, the genetic analysis of experimental samples showed that PTE is derived from P. ternata. Furthermore, our attempt to isolate ephedrine from PTE based on the past literature was unsuccessful. These results suggest that PTE in market distribution products may not contain ephedrine as a component.

Phosphorus (P) cycling present in sediments associated with iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and sulfur (S) geochemical processes may cause secondary pollution in overlying water. Understanding the mechanisms of P release from sediments should help to restore water quality. This study used the diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) technique to investigate the seasonal variation in the lability, remobilization mechanisms, and release characteristics of sediment P in the uncontaminated Xizhi River and the severely contaminated Danshui River, South China. P accumulation in sediments contributed to higher DGT-labile P concentrations in contaminated reaches, and the highest labile P concentrations were generally observed in summer season at each site. The significant positive relationships (p < 0.05) between labile Fe and P confirmed the Fe-P coupling release mechanism in uncontaminated sediments. Stronger relationships between labile Mn and P at contaminated sites indicated that Mn oxides played an important role in P remobilization. However, sulfate reduction associated with microbial activities (crucial genera: Desulfobulbus, Desulfomicrobium and Desulforhabdus) was considered to decouple the Fe & Mn-P cycling relationship, promoting P release at contaminated sites. The effluxes of sediment P were much higher in the Danshui River (mean 0.132 mg cm-2·d-1) than in the Xizhi River (mean 0.038 mg cm-2·d-1). And hot season led to growth in P effluxes that was much greater in contaminated river.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Arenobufagin (ArBu) is an important anti-tumor ingredient of Chan'su which has long been used as traditional Chinese medicine in clinic for tumor therapy in China. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of our study is to investigate the lipid homeostasis regulation effects of ArBu on zebrafish model of liver cancer and hepatoma cells, and to provide a reference for further clarifying its active mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The zebrafish xenograft model was established by injecting HepG2 cells stained with CM-Dil red fluorescent dye. Both the xenograft model and HepG2 cells were used to evaluate the anti-hepatoma activity of ArBu. High performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was the main method to study lipidomics, proteomics and the semiquantification of endogenous metabolites. Bioinformatics was used as an assistant tool to further explore the antitumor mechanism of ArBu. RESULTS: The lipidomics analysis revealed that ArBu caused differential lipids changes in a dose-dependent manner, including PCs, PEs, TGs, SMs, DGs, Cer and PA. PCs, PEs, SMs and TGs were markedly altered in both two models. The influence of glycerophospholipid metabolism was the major and commonly affected pathway. Notably, DGs and Cer were significantly changed only in HepG2 cells. Furthermore, the proteomics research in HepG2 cells fished the target proteins related to lipid homeostasis abnormalities and tumor suppression. ArBu reduced the expression of 65 differential proteins associated with the lipid metabolism, apoptosis and autophagy, such as LCLAT1, STAT3, TSPO and RPS27. Meanwhile, 7 amino acids of 29 determined metabolites were significantly changed, including tyrosine, glutamate, glutamine, leucine, threonine, arginine and isoleucine. CONCLUSION: ArBu has a significant anti-hepatoma effect in vitro and a therapeutic effect on zebrafish xenograft model. It regulated the lipid homeostasis. Activated SM synthase and arginine deiminase, inhibited sphingomyelinase, amino acid supply and JAK-STAT3 signaling pathway, and the affected glycerophospholipid metabolism might explain these results.

In this paper, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS)-based metabolomics approach was used to explore the mechanism of Danggui Buxue Tang(DBT) in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2 DM). T2 DM mice model was induced by high-sugar and high-fat fodder and streptozotocin(STZ). The routine indexes such as body weight, blood glucose, plasma insulin, IL-6 and related organ indexes were determined. The UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS technique was used to analyze the metabolism profile of serum samples between the control group and model group, and multiple statistical analysis methods including principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) were used to screen and identify biomarkers. Metabolic profiling revealed 16 metabolites as the most potential biomarkers distinguishing mice in model group from those in control group. The metabolomics pathway analysis(MetPA) was used to investigate the underlying metabolic pathways. Seven major metabolic pathways such the valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis, glycerophospholipid metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, fatty acid metabolism and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acid. Eleven metabolites such as taurocholic acid and palmitic acid were down-regulated in T2 DM mice, and five metabolites such as L-leucine and leukotriene E4 were up-regulated. Moreover, the sixteen biomar-kers of each administration group had a trend of returning to mice in control group. The significantly-altered metabolite levels indicated that DBT can improve the progression of type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity, regulating sugar and lipid metabolism disorders, and relieving inflammation.

Some Chinese herbal medicine needs to be processed before it can be used as medicine, especially toxic Chinese medicine. Highly toxic Aconti Kusnezoffii Radix(Caowu in Chinese) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and Mongolian medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, Caowu is usually processed by boiling with water(CW) until no white part inside and being tasted without tongue-numbing. In Mongolian medicine, it is usually soaked in Chebulae Fructus(Hezi in Chinese) decoction for several days(CH). Both methods could reduce toxicity according to reports. The biggest difference between CW and CH is that CW needs to be heated for 4-6 h, while CH needs Hezi as processing adjuvants. To explore the toxicity reduction mechanism of CW and CH, we studied the contents of various compounds in Caowu processed by two methods by UPLC-Orbitrap-MS. The results indicated that CW had 14 new ingredients, such as 14-O-anisoylneoline and dehydro-mesaconitine, while N-demethyl-mesaconitine and aconitine disappeared. At the same time, it could significantly decrease the content of diester diterpenoid alkaloids and increase the contents of monoester diterpenoid alkaloids and amine-diterpenoid alkaloids. CH had 9 new ingredients from Hezi, like gallic acid, chebulic acid and shikimic acid. Neither the kinds nor the contents of compositions from Caowu in CH changed little. This suggested that the processing mechanism of CW reduced highly toxic components(diester diterpenoid alkaloids) and increased the content of lowly toxic components(monoester diterpenoid alkaloids and amine-diterpenoid alkaloids). Attenuated principle of CH may be related to the components of Hezi. In this experiment, the conclusion shows that the chemical constituents of CW and CH are essentially different, and the two methods have different toxicity reduction principles.

Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., known as licorice, is one of the most famous traditional Chinese medicines. In this study, we perform a metabolome analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to assign bioactive components in different parts of licorice from different geographical origins in Gansu province of China. Sixteen potential biomarkers of taproots from different geographical origins were annotated, such as glycycoumarin, gancaonin Z, licoricone, and dihydroxy kanzonol H mainly exist in the sample of Jiuquan; neoliquiritin, 6'-acetylliquiritin, licochalcone B, isolicoflavonol, glycyrol, and methylated uralenin mainly exist in Glycyrrhiza uralensis from Lanzhou; gancaonin L, uralenin, and glycybridin I mainly exist in licorice from Wuwei for the first time.

Diatoms play an important role as ecological indicators, and some species of diatoms can easily cause water blooms, thereby decreasing the production capacity of water treatment plants and endangering drinking water safety. Mastering the diatom community dynamics is crucial for water supply. In this study, diatom composition, spatial distribution and succession were investigated in Datun Reservoir, Donghu Reservoir and Shuangwangcheng Reservoir, which are important drinking water sources in Shandong province, China. Results showed that the three reservoirs could be classified as being between mesotrophic and moderately eutrophic. The diatom community in each of the three reservoirs exhibited no obvious seasonal succession. The diatom communities in the three reservoirs were relatively simple in composition, with Synedra and Cyclotella being the most dominant groups all year round. Synedra had a negative relationship with NO2-N. Cyclotella had a positive association with NO3-N, but was negatively associated with NH4-N and CODMn in the three reservoirs. Through the analysis of diatom and environmental factors, the three reservoirs have the potential of hosting diatom blooms in summer, when the higher temperature combines with reduced water flow.
