RESUMEN

This study aims to identify the relationship between religious orientation and death anxiety in elderly individuals aged 65 and over. This study is cross sectional in nature. It was conducted with the participation of 250 individuals aged 65 and over who were registered in Family Health Centers in the city center located in the eastern part of Turkey between February and June, 2018. The participants' Religious Orientation Scale mean score was found to be 53.03 ± 9.91, and Religious Orientation Scale mean score was found to be significantly higher in married people, in graduates of high school, in those who had social security, and in those who lived with their spouse (p < 0.01). Death Anxiety Scale mean score was found to be 7.73 ± 2.28, and Death Anxiety Scale mean score was significantly higher in those who lived with their children (p < 0.05). No statistically significant relationship was found between Death Anxiety and Religious Orientation. Elderly individuals were found to have high religious orientation and death anxiety. It is recommended that the factors that increase death anxiety should be identified, interventions should be provided to decrease these factors, and elderly people should be provided with social services for their religious needs.

RESUMEN

In this study, cytotoxic effects of the dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts of Cyclotrichium niveum (Boiss.) Manden. & Scheng (Lamiaceae) were evaluated. We tested HeLa, MCF-7 cancer cells, and MRC-5 and MCF-10A normal cells. The ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts induced cytotoxicity whereas the ethanol and aqueous extracts had no cytotoxic activity against both cancer cells. IC50 values of the dichloromethane extract were 353.0 ± 84.30 µg/ml, 114.8 ± 40.34 µg/ml, 39 ± 0.56 µg/ml, and 49 ± 13 µg/ml in HeLa, MCF-7, MRC-5, MCF-10A cells, respectively. IC50 values of the ethyl acetate extract were 117.0 ± 36.24 µg/ml in HeLa cells, 156.3 ± 19.86 µg/ml in MCF-7 cells, 1100 ± 340 µg/ml in MRC-5 cells and 7900 ± 1200 µg/ml in MCF-10A cells. Additionally, the ethyl acetate extract showed more selectivity to HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cells than MRC-5 and MCF-10A normal cells. Our results of HPLC analysis showed that apigenin in the ethyl acetate extract (2.2518 ± 0.0005 mg/100 mg extract) might be responsible of that selective cytotoxic effect. In the current work, we have shown for the first time that C. niveum has cytotoxic properties in the cancer cell lines tested.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly utilized in adults and children for treatment of various conditions. Studies on CAM in diabetes have mainly focused on the adult population and its application in children has not been well established. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of CAM use in Turkish children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS: The information was acquired by a questionnaire completed by a face-to-face interview with the parents of children with T1DM. RESULTS: A total of 195 subjects (mean age: 14.02±4.7 years; F/M: 103/92) were included in this survey. Use of CAM was reported in 85 subjects (43.6%). Herbal medicines were used in 64 subjects (75.3%). Sixty-nine subjects (81.2%) did not inform the diabetes specialist about CAM use. Thirty-eight subjects (44.7%) evaluated CAM as efficacious. Only 3 subjects (3.5%) interrupted the insulin injections to use CAM. No relationships were found between CAM use and parental education or insulin dose. There were significant correlations between CAM use and higher family income (p=0.027), urban residence (p=0.05), presence of complications (p=0.03), dissatisfaction with medical therapy (p=0.034) and prior CAM use among parents (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: CAM use is a frequent practice among diabetic children, which is usually not shared with their physicians and sometimes leads to cessation of medical treatment.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we have investigated the role of leptin, soluble leptin receptor(sOb-R), resistin, and insulin secretory dynamics in the development of hypothalamic obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children who had hypothalamo-pituitary tumor were divided into two groups. First group included obese-overweight (hypothalamic obese = HOB group, n = 23) and second group included non-obese children (hypothalamic non-obese = HNOB group, n = 16). Exogenously obese-overweight children (OB group, n = 22) were included as controls. Basal and second-hour serum glucose and insulin in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), basal serum leptin, sOb-R, resistin levels, and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) indexes were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Age, sex, and pubertal status were similar in study groups. Median and interquartile ranges of body mass index (BMI) z scores were similar in HOB and OB groups (2.0 (1.5-2.1) and 2.1 (1.8-2.3), respectively). Serum leptin levels corrected for BMI were highest and total leptin/sOb-R ratios (free leptin index (FLI)) tended to be higher in HOB than HNOB and OB groups, indicating leptin resistance (leptin/BMI, 4.0 (1.6-5.2), 1.5 (0.8-3.1), and 2.5 (1.8-3.5); FLI, 2.0 (0.8-3.5), 0.6 (0.3-1.2), and 1.5 (1-2.3) in HOB, HNOB, and OB groups; respectively). Serum resistin levels were similar in groups (2.6 (1.9-3.1), 2.8 (1.7-3.4), and 3.0 (2.2-3.5) ng/ml in HOB, HNOB, and OB groups, respectively). Basal serum glucose, basal and second-hour insulin levels in OGTT, and HOMA index were higher in OB group than the HOB and HNOB groups, indicating insulin resistance in simple obesity; however, increment of insulin to same glycemic load in OGTT was highest in the HOB group indicating insulin dysregulation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Hypothalamic obesity seems to be related to both dysregulated afferent (leptin) and efferent (insulin) neural outputs through the autonomic nervous system resulting in energy storage as fat.
