RESUMEN

Schizophrenia poses significant societal challenges, including interpersonal tension, an increased risk of suicide, and soaring medical costs. Although antipsychotics can prevent relapses, they often give rise to adverse effects and do not provide lasting relief. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) emerge as a hopeful avenue for improving outcomes. However, existing research and meta-analyses of the efficacy of MBI in schizophrenia remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of MBI as an adjunctive therapy for schizophrenia. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from inception dates up to January 12, 2023. Statistical analyses were conducted using Stata software (version 15.0) and Review Manager 5.4. The quality of the included RCTs was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool. A total of 18 RCTs were included, with 675 patients and 704 health controls. Our meta-analysis revealed that MBI significantly improved psychosocial function, insight, and mindfulness in individuals with schizophrenia. The quality of the included RCTs had a low to moderate risk of bias. These findings suggest that MBI holds promise for improving the mental health of individuals with schizophrenia.

The comprehensive study of compound variations in released smoke during the combustion process is a great challenge in many scientific fields related to analytical chemistry like traditional Chinese medicine, environment analysis, food analysis, etc. In this work, we propose a new comprehensive strategy for efficiently and high-thoroughly characterizing compounds in the online released complex smokes: (i) A smoke capture device was designed for efficiently collecting chemical constituents to perform gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based untargeted analysis. (ii) An advanced data analysis tool, AntDAS-GCMS, was used for automatically extracting compounds in the original acquired GC-MS data files. Additionally, a GC-MS data analysis guided instrumental parameter optimizing strategy was proposed for the optimization of parameters in the smoke capture device. The developed strategy was demonstrated by the study of compound variations in the smoke of traditional Chinese medicine, Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. The results indicated that more than 590 components showed significant differences among released smokes of various moxa velvet ratios. Finally, about 88 compounds were identified, of which phenolic compounds were the most abundant, followed by aromatics, alkenes, alcohols and furans. In conclusion, we may provide a novel approach to the studies of compounds in online released smoke.

Engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are typical nanoparticles in terrestrial environments. Till now, few studies have compared their toxicity and mechanism to plants. Here we investigated the effects of CuO, nZVI ENPs and polystyrene (PS) NPs on lettuce growth, metabolic functions, and microbial community structure. Results showed that low concentrations of nanoparticles decreased root biomass and promoted photosynthetic indicators, whereas increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected in roots exposed to high concentrations of nanoparticles. High-dose CuO ENP exposure significantly raised the MDA content by 124.6 % compared to CK, causing the most severe membrane damage in the roots among the three types of nanoparticles. Although linoleic acid metabolism was down-regulated, the roots alleviated CuO stress by up-regulating galactose metabolism. Uptake of PS by roots similarly caused ROS production and activated the oxidative stress system by altering amino acid and vitamin metabolism. Faster microbial responses to nanoparticles were observed in the nZVI and PS networks. The root toxicity was indirectly mediated by ion release, NP uptake, or ROS generation, ultimately impacting root cell metabolism, rhizospheric microorganism and plant growth. These findings provide theoretical basis for assessing environmental impact of nanoparticles and their possible ecological risks.

Effects of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil-plant systems are still unclear. To investigate the spread and mechanisms of ARGs from soil to lettuce, lettuce was exposed to soil spiked with two environmentally relevant concentrations of polystyrene MPs (100 µm) and NPs (100 nm). Results showed that microorganisms that carried ARGs in soil were increased after exposure to MPs/NPs, which led to an increase in ARGs in roots. NPs were absorbed by roots and can be transported to leaves. Analysis of transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics indicated that high concentration of NPs regulated the expression of related genes and proteins and improved the accumulation of flavonoids in the lettuce, therefore decreased the abundance of microorganisms that contained ARGs. Our work emphasizes the size and dose influences of MPs and NPs on the spread of ARGs from soil to plant.

In this work, one-step synthesis of high-performance C-A-S-H (calcium alumina silicate hydrate) seeds from low-calcium fly ash (FA) and carbide slag (CS) by 7 days of mechanochemical mixing was proposed and used to activate lithium slag (LS) cement. The results showed that the seeding effect of C-A-S-H seeds was increased with the increasing Ca/Si (i.e. from 1.0 to 1.5), i.e. the mortar compressive strength of 1 day and 28 days were increased by 67% and 29% with the addition of 1.0% C-A-S-H nano-seeds at Ca/Si = 1.5 in the presence of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE), respectively. Moreover, the chloride resistance of lithium slag cement was improved significantly, i.e. the electric flux was decreased by more than 30% than that of plain lithium slag cement mortar. The performance difference of various C-A-S-H seeds is mainly attributed to their high proportion and polymerization degree, more stretch and three-dimensional foil-like morphology at high Ca/Si. This study provides guidance for obtaining low-cost and high-performance C-A-S-H seeds from wastes and the highly efficient utilization of LS as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in the future.

For centuries, Flos Trollii has been consumed as functional tea and a folk medicine in China's north and northwest zones. The quality of Flos Trollii highly depends on the producing zones. Unfortunately, few studies have been reported on the geographical discrimination of Flos Trollii. This work comprehensively investigated Flos Trollii compounds with an integration strategy combining gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) with chemometrics to explore the differences between Flos Trollii obtained from various origins of China. About 71 volatile and 22 involatile markers were identified with GC-MS and UHPLC-HRMS, respectively. Geographical discrimination models were synthetically investigated based on the identified markers. The results indicated that the UHPLC-HRMS coupled with the fisher discrimination model provided the best prediction capability (>97%). This study provides a new solution for Flos Trollii discrimination.

Orientin is a flavone isolated from medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that suppresses the growth of cancer cells in vitro. The effects of orientin in hepatoma carcinoma cells remain unknown. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of orientin on the viability, proliferation, and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro. In this study, we found that orientin could inhibit the proliferation, migration, and the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma cells. An activator of NF-κB signaling pathway, PMA, could abolish the inhibitory effect of orientin on NF-κB signaling pathway and proliferation and migration of Huh7 cells. These findings raise the possibility that orientin can be used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Uterine fibroids (UFs) are the most common benign tumors in women of reproductive age. Curcumae Rhizoma, the main essential oil component of which is curcumol, is widely used for the treatment of phymatosis in China due to its antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antithrombin, anti-tissue fibrosis and anti-oxygen pharmacological activities, but its potential for the treatment of UFs has not been evaluated. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of curcumol intervention in human uterine leiomyoma cells (UMCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Putative targets of curcumol intervention in UFs were identified using network pharmacology strategies. Molecular docking was performed to assess the binding affinity of curcumol to core targets. A concentration gradient of curcumol (0, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 µM) or RU-486 (mifepristone, 0, 10, 20, 40, 50, and 100 µM) was applied to UMCs, and cell viability was detected by the CCK-8 assay. Cell apoptosis and cell cycle were examined by flow cytometry, and cell migration was assessed by a wound-healing assay. Additionally, the mRNA and protein expression levels of critical pathway components were evaluated by RT‒PCR and western blotting. Finally, the actions of curcumol on different tumor cell lines were summarized. RESULTS: Network pharmacology predicted 62 genes with roles in the treatment of UFs with curcumol, and MAPK14 (p38MAPK) displayed a higher interaction degree. GO enrichment and KEGG analyses revealed that the core genes were abundantly enriched in the MAPK signaling pathway. The molecular binding of curcumol to core targets was relatively stable. In UMCs, 200, 300 and 400 µM curcumol treatment for 24 h decreased cell viability compared with that in the control group, and the greatest effect was detected at 48 h and maintained until 72 h. Curcumol arrested cells in the G0/G1 phase and subsequently suppressed mitosis, promoted early apoptosis and reduced the degree of wound healing in a concentration-dependent manner in UMCs. Furthermore, 200 µM curcumol decreased the mRNA and protein expression of p38MAPK, the mRNA expression of NF-κB, and the protein expression of Ki-67 and increased the mRNA and protein expression of Caspase 9. Curcumol (300 and 400 µM) decreased the mRNA and protein expression of p38MAPK, NF-κB, and Ki-67 and increased the protein expression of Caspase 9 in UMCs. Curcumol was demonstrated to treat tumor cell lines, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but its effects on benign tumors have not yet been reported. CONCLUSION: Curcumol suppresses cell proliferation and cell migration while arresting the cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase and inducing cell apoptosis in UMCs via a mechanism related to p38MAPK/NF-κB pathway regulation. Curcumol may be a potential therapeutic and preventive agent in the treatment of benign tumors such as UFs.

Cardamine violifolia is a Se hyperaccumulator found in Enshi, China. In this study, spatial metallomics was applied to visualize the distribution and speciation of Se in a single seed of C. violifolia. It was found that Se reached 1729.89 ± 28.14 mg/kg and the main Se species were SeCys and SeMet in bulk seeds. Further in situ study on a single seed found that the methylated Se species located mostly in the episperm. This is the first visualized evidence of the in situ distribution of methylated Se species in the seeds of C. violifolia. In all, spatial metallomics finds a preferable accumulation of methylated Se species in the seed coat, which deepens the understanding of the tolerance of Se by C. violifolia. The protocol applied in this study may also be used for the understanding of the tolerance of heavy metals/metalloids in other hyperaccumulators.

Most bacteria use type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS) systems for synthesizing fatty acids, of which the conserved FabA-FabB pathway is considered to be crucial for unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) synthesis in gram-negative bacteria. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, the phytopathogen of black rot disease in crucifers, produces higher quantities of UFAs under low-temperature conditions for increasing membrane fluidity. The fabA and fabB genes were identified in the X. campestris pv. campestris genome by BLAST analysis; however, the growth of the X. campestris pv. campestris fabA and fabB deletion mutants was comparable to that of the wild-type strain in nutrient and minimal media. The X. campestris pv. campestris ΔfabA and ΔfabB strains produced large quantities of UFAs and, altogether, these results indicated that the FabA-FabB pathway is not essential for growth or UFA synthesis in X. campestris pv. campestris. We also observed that the expression of X. campestris pv. campestris fabA and fabB restored the growth of the temperature-sensitive Escherichia coli fabA and fabB mutants CL104 and CY242, respectively, under non-permissive conditions. The in-vitro assays demonstrated that the FabA and FabB proteins of X. campestris pv. campestris catalyzed FAS. Our study also demonstrated that the production of diffusible signal factor family signals that mediate quorum sensing was higher in the X. campestris pv. campestris ΔfabA and ΔfabB strains and greatly reduced in the complementary strains, which exhibited reduced swimming motility and attenuated host-plant pathogenicity. The Pickering emulsions containing cinnamon essential oil (CEO) stabilized by lignocellulose nanocrystals-tannic acid (LCNC-TA) complexes were used to improve properties of gelatin film. The influences of various volume proportion mixed oil (sunflower oil/CEO 1:0, 5:1, 2:1 and 1:1) were investigated. Introducing CEO reduced the droplet size approximately from 57 to 30 µm, facilitating droplet distribution in film matrix. With increasing CEO proportion, the surface structure of emulsion films became uniform without micropores or cavities, showing good compatibility with film matrix during film-forming process. Furthermore, increasing CEO proportion improved tensile strength (TS, 3.75-4.61 MPa) and water vapor permeability (WVP, 9.16 × 10-12-7.61 × 10-12 g·cm-1s-1Pa-1) of emulsion films. Besides, the UV blocking, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of emulsion films improved as CEO proportion increased. Compared with the control gelatin film, the loss of CEO in emulsion films effectively decreased through pre-embedding approach by Pickering emulsion method.

As typical transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), tungsten selenide (WSe2) nanosheets (nano-WSe2) are widely used in various fields due to their layered structures and highly tunable electronic and magnetic properties, which results in the unwanted release of tungsten (W) and selenium (Se) into the environment. However, the environmental effects of nano-WSe2 in plants are still unclear. Herein, we evaluated the impacts and fate of nano-WSe2 and micro-WSe2 in rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). It was found that both nano-WSe2 and micro-WSe2 did not affect the germination of rice seeds up to 5000 mg/L but nano-WSe2 affected the growth of rice seedlings with shortened root lengths. The uptake and transportation of WSe2 was found to be size-dependent. Moreover, W in WSe2 was oxidized to tungstate while Se was transformed to selenocysteine, selenomethionine, SeIV and SeVI in the roots of rice when exposed to nano-WSe2, suggesting the transformation of nano-WSe2 in rice plants. The exposure to nano-WSe2 brought lipid peroxidative damage to rice seedlings. However, Se in nano-WSe2 did not contribute to the synthesis of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) since the latter did not change when exposed to nano-WSe2. This is the first report on the impacts and fate of nano-WSe2 in rice plants, which has raised environmental safety concerns about the wide application of TMDCs, such as WSe2 nanosheets.

Based on the fact that very little was found in the literature on the question of potential molecules and mechanism for high risk of cancer in patients with psoriasis, this study was designed and performed based on bioinformatics analysis including WGCNA. The most striking result to emerge from the data is that BUB1B/hsa-miR-130a-3p axis, closely related to the development of psoriasis, also plays a remarkable role in multiple cancer development. The expression patterns of hsa-miR-130a-3p were found significantly changed in multiple tumors, which was also associated with prognosis. Additionally, hsa-miR-130a-3p was downregulated in lesion skin of psoriasis, but there was no difference in blood between psoriasis patients and normal controls. Circulating has-miR-130a-3p was found to have a higher level of blood in multiple tumor patients, suggesting that hsa-miR-130a-3p has the potential to be a blood biomarker for cancer risk assessment in patients with psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion is complex, involving multiple regulatory genes and environmental factors, and requiring the simultaneous regulation of multiple targets. Meanwhile, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has certain advantages in the comprehensive treatment of multi-site, multi-target conditions and overall regulation of this condition. This study explores the effect of the well-known TCM, the Shexiang Baoxin Pill (SBP) on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo, 20 mg/kg/day SBP was administered by gavage for 28 days. In vitro, cardiomyocytes were pretreated with 25 µg/ml SBP for 24 h. Evans blue/TTC double-staining was employed to determine the infarct size. Markers of myocardial injury were detected in the serum and cell supernatants. The changes of pyroptosis and autophagy proteins were detected by western blot. Immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry and PCR were performed to further illustrate the results. RESULTS: SBP significantly reduced the myocardial infarct size, decreased the myocardial injury markers, inhibited cardiomyocyte pyroptosis and oxidative stress, and promoted autophagy in vivo. In vitro, SBP alleviated cardiomyocyte pyroptosis, inhibited oxidative stress, reduced IL-1ß and IL-18 secretion, and unblocked autophagy flux. Myocardial injury is mitigated by SBP via the rapid degradation of autophagosomes, and SBP promotes the accumulation of autophagosomes by downregulating mmu_circ_0005874, Map3k8 and upregulating mmu-miR-543-3p. CONCLUSION: We found for the first time that SBP can inhibit pyroptosis and oxidative stress, and protect from myocardial I/R injury. In addition, it inhibits pyroptosis and improves H/R injury by promoting autophagosome generation and accelerating autophagic flux. SBP interferes with autophagy through the interaction between mmu_circ_0005874/mmu-miR-543-3p/Map3k8.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for thalamic lesions is generally challenging because they are deep-seated lesions surrounded by vital neurovascular structures. Whether neuronavigation-guided transcortical-transventricular endoport-assisted endoscopic resection for thalamic lesions is feasible remains to be further evaluated. METHODS: A retrospective review of 8 who patients received neuronavigation-guided transcortical-transventricular endoport-assisted endoscopic resection for thalamic lesions was performed. Preoperative and tumor-related variables and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: All lesions were located in the medial part of the thalamus, and most of them expanded forward, downward, or backward. Median size of lesions was 31 mm (range, 16-52 mm). Final pathology results confirmed that 1 case was a cavernous malformation, 3 were pilocytic astrocytomas, and 4 were glioblastomas. None of the patients had postoperative seizures. Gross total resection and long-term postoperative survival were achieved in all patients with benign lesions, while near-total resection (>90%) was achieved in 3 of 4 patients (75%) with glioblastoma, and subtotal resection (<90%) was achieved in 1 patient (25%). Among patients with glioblastoma, 1 patient remained free of recurrence at 16 months of follow-up; the other 3 patients had worse Karnofsky performance scale scores after surgery and died within 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Combining the advantages of neuronavigation, endoscopy, and endoport techniques via the middle frontal gyrus approach can safely and effectively remove benign lesions in the medial part of the thalamus. This procedure can also be performed in well-selected cases of glioblastoma and likely confers a survival advantage for this rapidly and universally fatal disease.

The activity monitoring of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and the screening of its inhibitors are critical for the diagnosis and therapy of neurological diseases. Herein, CeO2-Co(OH)2 nanosheets were synthesized for the first time in a newly designed deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of l-proline and Ce(NO3)3·6H2O, and a colorimetric assay was developed for quantitative detection of AChE and anti-neurological disease drug screening. Impressively, CeO2-Co(OH)2 composites prepared in DESs have more prominent oxidase-like activity than Co(OH)2, CeO2, and CeO2-Co(OH)2 produced in aqueous solution. The mechanism study shows that the oxygen vacancies of CeO2-Co(OH)2 play a vital role in oxidase-like catalysis. Based on their excellent oxidase-like activity, the CeO2-Co(OH)2 nanosheets have been successfully applied for highly sensitive and selective detection of AChE with a linear range of 0.2-20 mU/mL. This strategy can also be used for inhibitor screening. The sensor displays an excellent linear response in the range of 0.001-2 µg/mL toward an irreversible inhibitor (paraoxon-ethyl). Moreover, five alkaloids, namely, berberine hydrochloride, caffeine, camptothecin, matrine, and evodiamine, were screened by using neostigmine bromide as a control; berberine hydrochloride exhibited a good inhibitory effect on AChE with an IC50 of 0.94 µM, while the other four had no obvious inhibitory effect. The mechanism of the different effects of alkaloids on inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity was explored via molecular docking and kinetic simulation.

This study aimed at exploring dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory peptides from silkworm pupae proteins by in silico analysis and in vitro assessments. In silico analysis of 274 silkworm pupae proteomes indicated that DPP-IV inhibitory peptides can be released from silkworm pupae proteins. In vitro assessments revealed that pepsin and bromelain led to better production of DPP-IV inhibitory peptides from silkworm pupae protein. Notably, peptide fractions (<1 kDa) from pepsin- and bromelain-treated hydrolysates exhibited more potent DPP-IV inhibitory activities. Two novel DPP-IV inhibitory peptides (Leu-Pro-Pro-Glu-His-Asp-Trp-Arg and Leu-Pro-Ala-Val-Thr-Ile-Arg) were identified by LC-MS/MS with IC50 values of 261.17 and 192.47 µM, respectively. Enzyme kinetics data demonstrated that these two peptides displayed a mixed-type DPP-IV inhibition mode, which was further validated by molecular docking data. Overall, in silico analysis combined with in vitro assessments can serve as an effective and rapid approach for discovery of DPP-IV peptides from silkworm pupae proteins.

Licorice is famous as a herbal medicine and food sweetener. This study provided a comprehensive strategy for investigating the quality of licorice based on untargeted metabolomics. A new strategy for identifying metabolite was developed, including fragment ion identification algorithm and ion fusion algorithm. The results showed that it can accurately integrate mass spectra from positive and negative ion modes to benefit metabolite identification. Based on the strategy, a number of significant difference metabolites were identified among licorice samples and 9 metabolites were confirmed by standards. Additionally, the geographical discrimination models of licorice samples were comprehensively investigated by chemometric methods. The results indicated that the supporting vector machine provided the best performance, with a prediction accuracy above 80%. The study results supported the conclusion that the quality of licorice from different regions in China was inconsistent.

Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, characterized by myocardial cell death (e.g., apoptosis) and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2 ·-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), is a serious threat to human health and property. Saponin astragaloside IV (ASIV), extracted from Chinese herbal medicine astragalus, is effective in resolving multiple pathological issues including myocardial I/R injury. Recent studies have shown that autophagy is regulated by ROS and plays an important role in myocardial I/R injury. However, regulation of autophagy by ASIV during myocardial I/R injury and the role of specific ROS involved in the process have been rarely reported. In the present study, we found that SOD2 was downregulated and O2 ·- was upregulated in H2O2-induced H9C2 cardiac myocyte injury in vitro and myocardial I/R injury in vivo, while such alterations were reversed by ASIV. ASIV possessed the ability to alleviate myocardial I/R injury via attenuating I/R-caused autophagosome accumulation. Upregulate of O2 ·- by 2-methoxyestradiol (2-ME) reversed the effect of ASIV-mediated autophagy regulation, which suggested that O2 ·- was vital in this process. In conclusion, our results contribute to understanding the mechanism of ASIV-induced cardioprotective effect.
