RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a global health problem with no effective treatment. Isoquercitrin (IQ) alters hepatic lipid metabolism and inhibits adipocyte differentiation. The underlying regulatory mechanisms of IQ in regulating insulin resistance (IR) and lipid metabolism remain unclear. PURPOSE: This study was aimed at investigating the effects of IQ on NASH and deciphering whether the underlying mechanisms are via modulation of galectin-3 mediated IR and lipid metabolism. METHODS: IR-HepG2 cell lines were used to demonstrate the ability of IQ to modulate galectin-3-mediated glucose disposal and lipid metabolism. A 20-week high-fat diet (HFD)-induced NASH model was established in C57BL/6J mice, and the protective effect of IQ on lipid disposal in the liver was verified. Further, the mRNA and protein levels of glucose and lipid metabolism were investigated, and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and acylcarnitine (AC) profiling were performed to characterize the changes in endogenous substances associated with mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism in serum and cells. Furthermore, the pharmacokinetic features of IQ were explored in a rat model of NASH. RESULTS: IQ restored liver function and ameliorated inflammation and lipid accumulationin NASH model mice. Notably, significant regulation of the proteins included fatty acid-generating and transporting, cholesterol metabolism enzymes, nuclear transcription factors, mitochondrial metabolism, and IR-related enzymes was noted to be responsible for the therapeutic mechanisms of IQ against experimental NASH. Serum lipid metabolism-related metabolomic assay confirmed that LPC and AC biosynthesis mostly accounted for the therapeutic effect of IQ in mice with NASH and that IQ maintained the homeostasis of LPC and AC levels. CONCLUSION: This is the first study showing that IQ protects against of NASH by modulating galectin-3-mediated IR and lipid metabolism. The mechanisms responsible for liver protection and improved lipid metabolic disorder by IQ may be related to the suppression of IR and regulation of mitochondrial function and lipid metabolism. Galectin-3 down-regulation represents a potentially novel approach for the treatment and prevention of NASH.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The fruits and seeds of genus Amomum are well-known as medicinal plants and edible spices, and are used in countries such as China, India and Vietnam to treat malaria, gastrointestinal disorders and indigestion. The morphological differences between different species are relatively small, and technical characterization and identification techniques are needed. RESULTS: Fourier transform near infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), combined with principal component analysis and two-dimensional correlation analysis were used to characterize the chemical differences of Amomum tsao-ko, Amomum koenigii, and Amomum paratsaoko. The targets and pathways for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in three species were predicted using network pharmacology and screened for the corresponding pharmacodynamic components as potential quality markers. The results of "component-target-pathway" network showed that (+)-Nerolidol, 2-Nonanol, α-Terpineol, α-Pinene, 2-Nonanone had high degree values and may be the main active components. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was further used to select for differential metabolites and was identified as a potential quality marker, 11 in total. PLS-DA and residual network (ResNet) classification models were developed for the identification of 3 species of the genus Amomum, ResNet model is more suitable for the identification study of large volume samples. SIGNIFICANCE: This study characterizes the differences between the three species in a visual way and also provides a reliable technique for their identification, while demonstrating the ability of FT-NIR spectroscopy for fast, easy and accurate species identification. The results of this study lay the foundation for quality evaluation studies of genus Amomum and provide new ideas for the development of new drugs for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As a traditional Chinese medicine and food, Euodiae Fructus (EF) is widely used in clinics to relieve pain and prevent vomiting and for making tea for more than a thousand years. In recent years, hepatotoxic reactions to EF have been reported. The intermediates produced by evodiamine and rutaecarpine metabolism in vitro were captured by glutathione (GSH), suggesting that the toxicity of EF may be related to metabolic activation. Whether licorice can inhibit the metabolic activation of EF has not been reported, which needed an effective strategy to clarify the correlation between protein conjugates and hepatotoxicity and the attenuation mechanism of licorice processing. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore the toxic components and mechanisms of EF based on metabolic activation and the detoxification of licorice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The content and toxicity index of protein conjugates in the liver were determined by orally administering mice and rats with EF. The attenuation mechanism of licorice was examined in cell and enzymology experiments. RESULTS: The change in evodiamine-cysteinylglycine (EVO-Cys-Gly) and evodiamine-cysteine (EVO-Cys) levels was consistent with the change in hepatotoxicity. Licorice inhibited the formation of the protein conjugates of EF and increased the content of GSH in L02 cells. CONCLUSION: EF mediated by P450 enzymes produced toxic intermediates, which combined with cysteine residues in animal liver and inactivate them, leading to hepatotoxicity. Interestingly, licorice can alleviate the GSH depletion caused by EF and inhibit the production of protein conjugates by inhibiting P450 enzymes.

RESUMEN

Clinical efficacy is the basis for the development of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), and the evaluation of clinical efficacy of TCM has always been the focus of attention. The technical and methodological difficulties in the evaluation process often restrict the generation of high-level evidence. Therefore, methodological research should be deepened and innovative practice should be carried out to study the application of scientific research methods in the evaluation of the advantages of TCM. After more than ten years of development, the clinical efficacy evaluation of TCM, on the basis of the initially classic placebo randomized controlled trials, has successively carried out a series of meaningful attempts and explorations in N-of-1 trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, real world studies, narrative medicine studies, systematic evaluation, and other aspects, laying the foundation for the transformation of TCM from "experience" to "evidence". This paper focused on the clinical efficacy evaluation of TCM, summarized the main connotation and development status of efficacy evaluation indicators, standards, and methods, and put forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for the problems of indicator selection, standard formulation, and methodology optimization in the research process. It is clear that scientific and objective evaluation of the efficacy of TCM is an urgent problem to be solved at present.

RESUMEN

Amid the modernization and internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the safety of TCM has attracted much attention. At the moment, the government, scientific research teams, and pharmaceutical enterprises have made great efforts to explore methods and techniques for clinical safety evaluation of TCM. Although considerable achievements have been made, there are still many problems, such as the non-standard terms of adverse reactions of TCM, unclear evaluation indicators, unreasonable judgment methods, lack of evaluation models, out-of-date evaluation standards, and unsound reporting systems. Therefore, it is urgent to further deepen the research mode and method of clinical safety evaluation of TCM. Based on the current national requirements for the life-cycle management of drugs, this study focused on the problems in the five dimensions of clinical safety evaluation of TCM, including normative terms, evaluation modes, judgment methods, evaluation standards, and reporting systems, and proposed suggestions on the development of a life-cycle clinical safety evaluation method that conformed to the characteristics of TCM, hoping to provide a reference for future research.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the active components and epigenetic regulation mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Forsythiae Fructus herb-pair (LFP) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced rat liver fibrosis. Methods: The main active ingredients and disease-related gene targets of LFP were determined using TCMSP and UniProt, and liver fibrosis disease targets were screened in the GeneCards database. A network was constructed with Cytoscape 3.8.0 and the STRING database, and potential protein functions were analyzed using bioinformatics analysis. Based on these analyses, we determined the main active ingredients of LFP and evaluated their effects in a CCl4-induced rat liver fibrosis model. Serum biochemical indices were measured using commercial kits, hepatocyte tissue damage and collagen deposition were evaluated by histopathological studies, and myofibroblast activation and inflammation were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed to determine the levels of homocysteine, reduced glutathione, and oxidized glutathione, which are involved in inflammation and oxidative stress. Results: The main active components of LFP were quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin, and its main targets were α-smooth muscle actin, cyclooxygenase-2, formyl-peptide receptor-2, prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1, nuclear receptor coactivator-2, interleukinß, tumor necrosis factor α, CXC motif chemokine ligand 14, and transforming growth factor ß1. A combination of quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin alleviated the symptoms of liver fibrosis. Conclusion: The results of this study support the role of LFP in the treatment of liver fibrosis, and reveal that LFP reduces collagen formation, inflammation, and oxidative stress. This study suggests a potential mechanism of action of LFP in the treatment of liver fibrosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Eucommia ulmoides leaf (EUL), as a medicine and food homology plant, is a high-quality industrial raw material with great development potential for a valuable economic crop. There are many factors affecting the quality of EULs, such as different drying methods and regions. Therefore, quality and safety have received worldwide attention, and there is a trend to identify medicinal plants with artificial intelligence technology. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the comparison and differentiation for different drying methods and geographical traceability of EULs. As a superior strategy, the two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) was used to directly combined with residual neural network (ResNet) based on Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy. RESULTS: (1) Each category samples from different regions could be clustered together better than different drying methods through exploratory analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis; (2) A total of 3204 2DCOS images were obtained, synchronous 2DCOS was more suitable for the identification and analysis of EULs compared with asynchronous 2DCOS and integrated 2DCOS; (3) The superior ResNet model about synchronous 2DCOS used to identify different drying method and regions of EULs than the partial least squares discriminant model that the accuracy of train set, test set, and external verification was 100%; (4) The Xinjiang samples was significant differences than others with correlation analysis of 19 climate data and different regions. CONCLUSIONS: This study verifies the superiority of the ResNet model to identify through this example, which provides a practical reference for related research on other medicinal plants or fungus.

As an endemic species,Wolfiporia cocos (F.A. Wolf) Ryvarden & Gilb. is widely distributed, such as in China, Korea, Japan, and North America, which have had a dual-purpose resource for medicines and food for over 2000 years. The applications of W. cocos were used to treat diseases including edema, insomnia, spleen deficiency, and vomiting. What's more, there have been wide uses of such edible fungi as a function food or dietary supplement recently. Up until now, 166 kinds of chemical components have been isolated and identified from W. cocos including triterpenes, polysaccharides, sterols, diterpenes, and others. Modern pharmacological studies showed that the components hold a wide range of pharmacological activities both in vitro and in vivo, such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-oxidant, and antidepressant activities. In addition, present results showed that the mechanisms of pharmacological activities were closely related to chemical structures, molecular signaling paths and the expression of relate proteins for polysaccharides and triterpenes. For further in-depth studies on this fungus based on the recent research status, this review provided some perspectives and systematic summaries of W. cocos in traditional uses, chemical components, pharmacological activities, separation and analysis technologies, and structure-activity relationships.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the pharmacological effects and molecular mechanism of quercetin 7-rhamnoside (Q7R) in the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis induced by alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT). Methods: ANIT-induced cholestatic hepatitis rat model was used to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of three different doses of Q7R (1.25 mg/kg; 2.5 mg/kg; 5 mg/kg). Serum biochemical indices were detected using commercial kits. H&E and masson staining were used to observe hepatic tissue damage and collagen deposition in hepatocytes. The metabolism of bile acid-related substances was detected via HPLC-MS/MS by 5-(diisopropylamino) amylamine (DIAAA) derivative method. Hepatocyte injury, cholestasis, and inflammation were detected at the mRNA and protein levels using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting, respectively. Results: Q7R can decrease the level of CYP7A1, and increase FXR, CYP27A1 so then improving abnormal bile acid secretion. Furthermore, Q7R can also ameliorating inflammation by reduce TNF-α, IL-1ß, PTGS1, PTGS2, NCOA2, NF-κB level. Therefore, Q7R had an effective therapeutic effect on ANIT-induced cholestatic hepatitis, improving abnormal bile acid secretion, and inhibiting inflammatory responses. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that Q7R treat cholestatic hepatitis by regulating bile acid secretion and alleviating inflammation.

RESUMEN

Boletes are favored by consumers because of their unique flavor, rich nutrition and delicious taste. However, the different nutritional values of each species lead to obvious price differences, so shoddy products appear on the market, which affects food safety. The aim of this study was to find a rapid and effective method for boletes species identification. In this paper, 1,707 samples of eight boletes species were selected as the research objects. The original Mid-Infrared (MIR) spectroscopy data were adopted for support vector machine (SVM) modeling. The 11,949 spectral images belong to seven data sets such as two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) and three-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (3DCOS) were used to carry out Alexnet and Residual network (Resnet) modeling, thus we established 15 models for the identification of boletes species. The results show that the SVM method needs to process complex feature data, the time cost is more than 11 times of other models, and the accuracy is not high enough, so it is not recommended to be used in data processing with large sample size. From the perspective of datasets, synchronous 2DCOS and synchronous 3DCOS have the best modeling results, while one-dimensional (1D) MIR Spectrum dataset has the worst modeling results. After comprehensive analysis, the modeling effect of Resnet on the synchronous 2DCOS dataset is the best. Moreover, we use large-screen visualization technology to visually display the sample information of this research and obtain their distribution rules in terms of species and geographical location. This research shows that deep learning combined with 2DCOS and 3DCOS spectral images can effectively and accurately identify boletes species, which provides a reference for the identification of other fields, such as food and Chinese herbal medicine.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Medicinal plants are very important to human health, and ensuring their quality and rapid evaluation are the current research concerns. Deep learning has a strong ability in recognition. This study extended it to the identification of medicinal plants from the perspective of spectrum. OBJECTIVE: In order to realise the rapid identification and provide a reference for the selection of high-quality resources of medicinal plants, a combination of deep learning and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) was proposed. METHODS: For the first time, Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy 2DCOS images combined with residual neural network (ResNet) was used for the origin identification of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis. In total 1593 samples were collected and 12821 2DCOS images were drawn. The climate of different origins was briefly analysed. RESULTS: The xishuangbanna, puer, lincang, honghe and wenshan are the five regions with more ecological advantages. The synchronous 2DCOS models of FT-MIR and NIR could realise origin identification with the accuracy of 100%. The synchronous images were suitable for the identification of medicinal plants with complex systems. The full band, feature band and different contour models had no big difference in distinguishing ability, so they were not the key factors affecting the discrimination results. CONCLUSION: The ResNet models established were stable, reliable, and robust, which not only solved the problem of origin identification, expanded the application field of deep learning, but also provided practical reference for the related research of other medicinal plants.

RESUMEN

Ferroptosis, a new type of iron-dependent programmed cell death, is related to multiple pathways such as glutathione/glutathione peroxidase 4, iron metabolism, lipid metabolism, and iron autophagy, and plays an important part in the occurrence and development of many diseases, such as tumor, cerebral ischemia, and Parkinson's disease. Ferroptosis is a double-edged sword as it can eliminate pathological cells (such as tumor cells) but long-term ferroptosis may cause or aggravate other disorders related to abnormal lipid metabolism and iron metabolism. Regulating the balance between cell proliferation and ferroptosis may be an important target for drug intervention in diseases. The Yin-yang theory is one of the foundational principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is used to explain the physiological functions and pathological changes of human body and to guide the diagnosis and prevention of disease and health care. The balance of cell proliferation and programmed death is essentially the balance of Yin and Yang at the cellular level, which is governed and regulated by the law of balance. TCM intervenes in ferroptosis by promoting ferroptosis of tumor cells (damaging the excess) and inhibiting ferroptosis of other diseases (compensating the deficiency), which is similar to the treatment principle of adjusting Yin and Yang. On this basis, this article aims to use the Yin-yang theory to clarify the relationship between TCM promoting ferroptosis and inhibiting ferroptosis, which is expected to lay a basis for the modern application of Yin-yang theory and provide new targets for TCM treatment.

RESUMEN

Aa a characteristic medicinal plant in China, Gentiana rigescens Franch. has the function of protecting the liver and invigorating the spleen. At present, there are a few studies on the content determination method of characteristic components of G. rigescens, so it is necessary to establish a scientific and effective quality control method; In this study, The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint of G. rigescens was established, based on literature reviewed and characteristic spectrum identified, the source range of G. rigescens quality marker (Q-marker) was screened. The effectiveness of the ingredients and the corresponding targets and pathways was analyzed through network pharmacology, and drew the diagram of ''component-target-pathway''. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of G. rigescens was performed by HPLC, and screen the main marker components leading to the differences between groups which were determined the Q-marker of G. rigescens; The literature and HPLC had determined that five iridoids were the main source of G. rigescens Q-marker. The network pharmacology (effectiveness) and qualitative and quantitative (detectability) analysis of G. rigescens from different producing areas confirmed that gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, and sweroside can be used as the main landmark components, and there were significant differences in their contents among different producing areas; The analysis of G. rigescens from different producing areas was carried out by network pharmacology and chemical fingerprints, it is confirmed can be used as potential Q-marker to provide sufficient theoretical basis for the quality control of G. rigescens in the later period.

RESUMEN

Boletes are favored by consumers because of their delicious taste and high nutritional value. However, as the storage period increases, their fruiting bodies will grow microorganisms and produce substances harmful to the human body. Therefore, we need to identify the storage period of boletes to ensure their quality. In this article, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) images are directly used for deep learning modeling, and the complex spectral data analysis process is transformed into a simple digital image processing problem. We collected 2,018 samples of boletes. After laboratory cleaning, drying, grinding, and tablet compression, their Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectroscopy data were obtained. Then, we acquired 18,162 spectral images belonging to nine datasets which are synchronous 2DCOS, asynchronous 2DCOS, and integrative 2DCOS (i2DCOS) spectra of 1,750-400, 1,450-1,000, and 1,150-1,000 cm-1 bands. For these data sets, we established nine deep residual convolutional neural network (ResNet) models to identify the storage period of boletes. The result shows that the accuracy with the train set, test set, and external validation set of the synchronous 2DCOS model on the 1,750-400-cm-1 band is 100%, and the loss value is close to zero, so this model is the best. The synchronous 2DCOS model on the 1,150-1,000-cm-1 band comes next, and these two models have high accuracy and generalization ability which can be used to identify the storage period of boletes. The results have certain practical application value and provide a scientific basis for the quality control and market management of bolete mushrooms. In conclusion, our method is novel and extends the application of deep learning in the food field. At the same time, it can be applied to other fields such as agriculture and herbal medicine.

RESUMEN

Background: Bronchiectasis is a chronic inflammation of the bronchi with recurrent infections and hemoptysis. The MAGELLAN study compared oral rivaroxaban, 10 mg once daily (QD), for 35 ± 4 days with subcutaneous enoxaparin 40 mg QD for 10 ± 4 days followed by placebo for 25 ± 4 days to prevent venous thromboembolism in patients hospitalized with an acute medical illness. MAGELLAN included a subset of patients with bronchiectasis. In a post hoc analysis, we evaluated the incidence and severity of pulmonary bleeding in patients with bronchiectasis who were hospitalized for an acute medical illness. This analysis included MAGELLAN patients diagnosed with bronchiectasis at baseline. Patients were evaluated by treatment group for International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis major bleeding, non-major clinically relevant (NMCR) bleeding, and the composite of the 2 (ie, clinically relevant bleeding). Results: Medically ill patients with bronchiectasis were randomized to rivaroxaban (n = 60) or enoxaparin/placebo (n = 61). There were 2 fatal pulmonary bleeds and 1 fatal gastrointestinal bleed in the rivaroxaban arm and no fatal or major bleeding in the enoxaparin/placebo arm. The incidence of major bleeding was 5% in the rivaroxaban arm. One NMCR bleed occurred in the rivaroxaban arm and 2 NMCR bleeds occurred in the enoxaparin/placebo arm. The incidence of clinically relevant bleeding was 6.7% versus 3.3% in the rivaroxaban and enoxaparin/placebo groups, respectively (relative risk = 2.06 [95% confidence interval: 0.351-12.046]). Conclusion: In-patients hospitalized with bronchiectasis and an acute medical illness, clinically relevant bleeding, including fatal pulmonary hemorrhage, occurs more frequently with extended rivaroxaban thromboprophylaxis than with enoxaparin followed by placebo.

RESUMEN

Six new tirucallane-type triterpenoids (1-6), along with ten known triterpenoids, were isolated from methylene chloride extract of the resin of Boswellia carterii Birdw. By the application of the comprehensive spectroscopic data, the structures of the compounds were clarified. The experimental electronic circular dichroism spectra were compared with those calculated, which allowed to assign the absolute configurations. Compounds 5 and 6 possesed a 2, 3-seco tirucallane-type triterpenoid skeleton, which were first reported. Their inhibitory activity against NO formation in LPS-activated BV-2 cells were evaluated. Compound 9 showed appreciable inhibitory effect, with an IC50 value of 7.58 ± 0.87 µmol·L-1.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of Bushenantai (BSAT) granule() on angiogenesis-related factors [E2, P, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] at the maternal-fetal interface of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) mice, and to evaluate the role of BSAT in promoting angiogenesis at the maternal-fetal interface by influencing the expression of sex hormones, and VEGF. METHODS: A mouse model with normal pregnancy and another with Clark's classic RSA were established. The RSA mice were randomly assigned to six groups: normal, model, progesterone, high-doseBSAT granule (BSAT-H), medium-dose-BSAT granule (BSAT-M), and low-dose-BSAT granule (BSAT-L) (n = 10 for each group). The embryo loss rate and the histopathological changes in the decidual tissues were measured. Serum levels of estrogen (E2), progesterone (P), and VEGF were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The mRNA and protein expressions of estradiol receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), VEGF, and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in the decidual tissues were identified by immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The embryo loss rate in all groups that received BSAT treatment was reduced, while the number of blood vessels at decidual tissues was increased. The serum levels of E2, P and VEGF were elevated, and the mRNA and protein expressions of ER, PR, VEGF, and VEGFR2 in the decidual tissues were enhanced. CONCLUSION: BSAT can improve angiogenesis at the maternal-fetal interface and reduce the embryo loss rate, which may be associated with its ability to increase the serum levels of estrogen, progesterone, and VEGF, in addition to up-regulation of mRNA and protein expression of ER, PR, VEGF, and VEGFR2 in the decidual tissue.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Paris L. (Liliaceae) consisted of 33 species, of which the study focused on Paris polyphylla Smith, P. polyphylla var. chinensis (Franch.) Hara, and P. polyphylla Smith var. yunnanensis (Franch.) Hand. -Mazz. Due of course to the good effects of analgesia and hemostasis, it was traditionally used to treat trauma by folk herbalists. AIM OF THIS REVIEW: This study summarized the traditional uses, distributions, phytochemical components, pharmacological properties, and toxicity evaluation of the genus Paris, and reviewed the economic value of cultivate P. polyphylla. This aim was that of providing a new and comprehensive recognition of these medicinal plants for the further utilization of Paris plants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature about traditional and folk uses of genus Paris was obtained from Duxiu Search, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). The other literature about genus Paris was searched online on Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, Scifinder database, and Springer research. The Scientific Database of China Plant Species (DCP) (http://db.kib.ac.cn/Default.aspx) databases were used to check the scientific names and provide species, varieties, and distribution of genus Paris. The botany studies information of genus Paris was available online from Plant Plus of China (www.iplant.cn). All the molecular structures of chemical compounds displayed in the text were produced by ChemBioDraw Ultra 14.0. RESULTS: The plants of genus Paris, containing about 33 species and 15 varieties, are mainly distributed in Southwest China (Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces). More than 320 chemical components have been isolated from genus Paris since 2020, including steroidal saponins, C-21 steroids, phytosterols, insect hormones, pentacyclic triterpenes, flavonoids, and other compounds. Arrays of pharmacological investigations revealed that compounds and extracts of Paris species possess a wide spectrum of pharmacological effects, such as antitumor, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antifungal, hemostatic, and anti-inflammatory activities. The studies about toxicity evaluation suggested that Rhizome Paridis had slight liver toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: The dried rhizomes of P. polyphylla, P. polyphylla var. chinensis, and P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis were used to treat wound, bleeding, and stomachache, etc. in folk medicine. Phytochemistry researches showed that different species had pretty similarities especially in terms of chemical constituents. Pharmacological studies witnessed that Rhizome Paridis has various activities. Among these activities, steroidal saponins were the main active ingredients. Furthermore, an important aspect responsible for increasing interest in genus Paris is the use of antifertility-nonhormonal contraceptives by women. Also, the development of TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine) planting industry can improve the income of ethnic minorities and promote economic development.

RESUMEN

Polygonati Rhizoma was first recorded in Mingyi Bielu(《名医别录》) as both medicine and food due to its high edible and medicinal values. However, there is no systematic textual research on its use as medicine and food. Polygonati Rhizoma and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma show similar morphology,so they are often confused.Clematis apiifolia and Polygonatum odoratum are often regarded as the original plants of Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma. By reviewing the related records in Chinese herbal books of the past dynasties, this paper aimed to clarify the relationship between Polygonati Rhizoma,C.apiifolia and P.odoratum, trace the historical evolution of Polygonati Rhizoma as medicine and food from the name, harvesting and processing, property, flavor and meridian tropism, efficacy and indications, edible and medicinal records, and contraindications, and summarize its application in ethnic medicine,in order to inherit and develop the ethnic medicine. The findings demonstrated that the name of Polygonati Rhizoma and its synonyms were derived from its pictogram, function, and place of origin, containing a wealth of myth implication and Taoism thought.Polygonati Rhizoma,C.apiifolia and P.odoratum are three species, different from the conclusions in previous textual research. The seedlings, flowers, seeds, and rhizomes of Polygonati Rhizoma all could be used for edible and medicinal purposes, with its edible records exceeding the medicinal records. There were 22 medical books from the ethnic minority groups such as The Annals of National Medicine in Yunnan,Zhongguo Minzu Yaozhi Yao,and Dictionary of Chinese Ethnic Medicine recording the knowledge and application of 12 species in Polygonatum by 26 ethnic minorities.Due to their different living environments, lifestyles, and cultural customs, ethnic minorities have formed their unique medical cultures.
