OBJECTIVES: To explore the action characteristics of acupuncture manipulations by combining visual and sensor technique, so as to improve the identification and classification accuracy of acupuncture manipulations and to quantificate the classifiations. METHODS: In this paper, the time domain features of acupuncture physical parameters and dynamic gesture features in the video of acupuncture manipulations are combined together to identify and classify acupuncture techniques. The acupuncture needle manipulation processes of 2 acupuncture experts and 3 young acupuncturists were selected as the study objects. The collected data included 4 basic manipulation techniques:lifting-thrusting reinforcing, lifting- thrusting reducing, twisting reinforcing and twisting reducing methods, all of which were performed by right-handed doctors. During acupuncture manipulation, a three-axis attitude sensor was used to acquire finger moving acceleration velocity and needle-rotating angle velocity, followed by analyzing the parameters of hand-moving velocity, amplitude, strength and angle. The mapping relationship among physical parameters and different manipulating methods was formed in time domain. The computer vision technology was employed to extract the spatio-temporal features of the acupuncture manipulation video images, and a hybrid model of three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D CNN) and long- and short-term memory (LSTM) neural network were used for the recognition and classification of dynamic gestures of hand in acupuncture manipulation videos. Then the time-domain features of physical parameters were combined with the dynamic gestures in the classification process, with the manipulation classification realized. RESULTS: In performing the lift-thrusting reinforcing method, the needle insertion speed was faster and the force was larger, while the needle lifting speed was slower and the force was smaller. And in performing the lift-thrusting reducing method, the needle lifting speed was faster, the force was stronger, and the needle insertion speed was slower and the force was smaller. In the performance of twisting reinforcing, the leftward twisting force was bigger and the rotation amplitude was larger, while in performing the reducing method, the rightward twisting force was larger and the rotation amplitude was larger. When using the mean value of time of acceleration, speed, and amplitude as the basis of discrimination, the accuracy rates of lifting-thrusting reinforcing and reducing were 95.56% and 93.33%, while those of the two twisting manipulations were 95.56% and 91.11%, respectively. Compared with the classification method that only uses the sensor to obtain the manipulation information, the recognition accuracy was significantly improved. CONCLUSIONS: The acupuncture manipulation classification system can achieve quantitative analysis of physical parameters and dynamic recognition of acupuncture techniques, providing a certain foundation for the quantification and inheritance of acupuncture techniques.

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease mainly characterized by progressive fibrosis of the skin. There are two types of scleroderma, namely localized scleroderma (LS) and systemic sclerosis (SSc); skin lesions in both types of scleroderma are histologically identical. Progressive skin sclerosis induces psychological and ecological burden for scleroderma patients. However, there is no effective treatment for scleroderma due to its unclear etiology. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is recognized as an environmental chemical effector that can respond to ultraviolet radiation, which has been demonstrated to participate in the pathogenesis of SSc in our previous study. In this study, we verify whether the anti-fibrosis effect of ultraviolet A1 (UVA1) phototherapy could be partially induced through Ficz/AhR/MAPK signaling activation for fibrotic lesions in both SSc and LS patients. This is the first study to show the association between the AhR pathway and the anti-fibrotic mechanism of UVA1 phototherapy, which provides additional evidence of the role of AhR in the fibrotic mechanism of systemic scleroderma from different perspectives. Ficz and other AhR agonists may replace UVA1 phototherapy as anti-fibrotic agents in scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: There has been a rapid increase in the worldwide prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies have shown that acupuncture can improve neurological and cognitive function; however, the utility of applying acupuncture in patients with AD remains unclear. This study protocol describes a clinical trial for evaluating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation with donepezil hydrochloride on cognitive function in patients with AD. METHODS/DESIGN: This multicenter randomized controlled trial commenced on February 1, 2019, at the Shanghai Longhua Hospital of TCM, Shanghai Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, and Shanghai Mental Health Center, and will conclude on June 30, 2022. The study will recruit 184 patients randomly divided into an acupuncture group or a control group at a 1:1 ratio. All participants will receive donepezil hydrochloride (5 mg/day), and those in the acupuncture group will receive acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation with donepezil for 12 weeks. The primary outcome will be the post-treatment change in the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognition score at 12 weeks. The secondary outcomes will be the efficacy scores of the Minimum Mental State Examination, Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Research Activity-Daily Life, and Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease. All assessments will be performed at baseline, after treatment (week 12), and at follow-up (weeks 24 and 36). DISCUSSION: This trial may provide high-quality evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of AD. The results of this study will be published in peer-reviewed journals. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect of electroacupuncture at Siguan points and flunarizine hydrochloride capsule on migraine of liver yang hyperactivity. METHODS: A total of 110 patients with migraine of liver yang hyperactivity were randomly divided into an electroacupuncture group (55 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a western medication group (55 cases, 2 cases dropped off). In the electroacupuncture group, electroacupuncture was applied at Siguan points (Hegu [LI 4] and Taichong [LR 3]), with disperse-dense wave of 2 Hz/100 Hz in frequency and current intensity of 0.1-1 mA, 30 min each time, once a day, 5 times per week for 4 weeks. Flunarizine hydrochloride capsule was given orally in the western medication group, 10 mg a day for 4 weeks. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score and the migraine attack days were observed before and after treatment, during follow-up of 1, 3 and 6 months, and the migraine symptom score was observed before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, during follow-up of 1, 3 and 6 months, the VAS scores and the migraine attack days in the two groups were decreased compared with before treatment (ï¼°<0.05), and above indexes in the electroacupuncture group were lower than the western medication group (ï¼°<0.05). After treatment, the migraine symptom scores in the two groups were decreased (ï¼°<0.05), the change in the electroacupuncture group was greater than the western medication group (ï¼°<0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at Siguan points could effectively reduce headache intensity and migraine attack days, relieve migraine symptoms in patients with migraine of liver yang hyperactivity, and the efficacy is superior to oral flunarizine hydrochloride capsules.

Bioactivity-guided fraction of an extract of Sophora flavescens to identify antibacterial compounds against Acinetobacter baumannii, led to the isolation of two new compounds, (2″R)-5-methoxy-7-hydroxy-8-lavandulylchromone (13) and (2S,ßS)-(-)-sophobiflavonoid CE (19), and 18 known flavonoids, (6aR,11aR)-(-)-maackiain (1), (2S)-(-)-8-prenylnaringenin (2), (2S)-(-)-exiguaflavanone K (3), (2S)-(-)-sophoraflavanone G (4), (2S)-(-)-leachianone A (5), (2S)-(-)-kushenol E (6), (2S)-(-)-leachianone G (7), (±)-kushenol F (8), (2S)-(-)-kurarinone (9), (2S)-(-)-kurarinol (10), (2 R,3R)- (+)-3,7,4'-trihydroxy-5-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone (11), (2S)-(-)-isoxanthohumol (12), (2S)-(-)-2'-methoxykurarinone (14), (2 R,3R)-(+)-kushenol I (15), calycosin (16), kuraridin (17), (2S)-(-)-kushenol A (18), and trifolirhizin (20). Their structures were elucidated based on NMR, MS, and CD spectroscopic analysis. Among them, 1, 2, 5, and 15 exerted modest antibacterial activity against A. baumannii, with MIC95 of 128-256 µg/mL for 2 and 256-512 µg/mL for 1, 5 and 15.

Objective: To observe the efficacy of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion for lumbar disc herniation (LDH) due to kidney deficiency and blood stasis and observe the influence of this method on lumbar functions and inflammatory factors in patients with this condition. Methods: A total of 120 LDH patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups, including a herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group, a flour cake-partitioned moxibustion group, and a Western medication group, with 40 patients in each group. The patients in the Western medication group were treated with diflunisal tablets, 0.5 g per dose, 2 doses a day. Those in the herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group were treated with additional herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group at Back-Shu Points and Jiaji (EX-B2) Points once a day. Those in the flour cake-partitioned moxibustion group were treated with the same methods as in the herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group, except that the herbal cake was replaced by a flour cake. All the patients were treated for 10 d. After treatment, the scores of the visual analog scale (VAS) and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) and the changes of the interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and substance P (SP) levels were observed, and the efficacy was evaluated. Results: After treatment, the VAS score and the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and SP were lower than those before treatment, and the JOA score was higher than that before treatment in the three groups, indicating intra-group statistical significance (P<0.05). The VAS score and the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and SP of the herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group were lower than those of the flour cake-partitioned moxibustion group and the Western medication group, while the JOA score of the herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group was higher than that of the other two groups, indicating inter-group statistical significance (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group was 92.5%, higher than that of the flour cake-partitioned moxibustion group (80.0%) and the Western medication group (72.5%), indicating inter-group statistical significance (P<0.05). Conclusion: On the basis of Western oral medication, additional herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion can alleviate the pain and improve the lumbar functions in patients with LDH due to kidney deficiency and blood stasis. The efficacy of the integrated method is better than that of either flour cake-partitioned moxibustion or Western medication alone, which may be related to the reduction of serum inflammatory factors.

Stroke is the leading fatal disease in China. This retrospective study aimed to explore the optimal acupuncture intervention time for long-term efficacy on motor dysfunction in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke through 1-year of follow-up. Three hundred and nine patients collected at Longhua Hospital from January 2016 to December 2017 were classified into 3 groups based on the acupuncture intervention time, including groups A (within 2 days), B (within 3-7 days) and C (within 8-14 days). All patients had received standard treatment combined with acupuncture therapy. Specifically, acupuncture was performed at the acupoints including LI4 (Hegu), ST40 (Fenglong), DU20 (Baihui), and motor area of the scalp, followed by 2 electroacupuncture protocols based on different muscle tensions once a day for 5 days consecutively. The time-effect relationship was assessed using both the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and the modified Barthel index (MBI) on the 90th day and 1st year, respectively. Meanwhile, the modified Rankin scale (mRS), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and fibrinogen (FIB) were also measured during the 1-year follow-up. The favorable outcome rate was 74.4%. One-way univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences in FMA and MBI on the 90th day among the 3 groups ([Formula: see text] < 0.05), while no significant differences were observed in FMA, MBI or mRS at the 1st year between groups A and B. The levels of hs-CRP and FIB ([Formula: see text] < 0.05) were markedly reduced. Binary logistic regression analysis suggested that patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) (odds ratio (OR): 3.156), chronic kidney disease (CKD) (OR: 2.563), diabetes mellitus (DM) (OR: 2.174) or stroke history (OR: 1.883) were more inclined to recover poorly from nerve function deficit ([Formula: see text] < 0.05). Earlier acupuncture intervention may have a better long-term effect on motor dysfunction and inflammation during the 1-year follow-up. Moreover, acupuncture within 2 days is probably the optimal treatment time for early recovery on the 90th day.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive memory deficits, cognitive decline, and spatial disorientation. Non-pharmacological interventions to treat AD have been reported in many meta-analyses (MAs), but robust conclusions have not been made because of variations in the scope, quality, and findings of these reviews. Objective: This work aimed to review existing MAs to provide an overview of existing evidence on the effects of five non-pharmacological interventions in AD patients on three outcomes: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), activities of daily living (ADL), and Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive section (ADAS-cog). Methods: The databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science were searched to collect MAs of non-pharmacological interventions for AD. Two reviewers independently conducted literature screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. We assessed the quality of MAs with the Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 and assessed the evidence quality for significant outcomes using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Results: We found 10 eligible MAs, which included between three (133 patients) and 15 randomized trials (1,217 patients), and five non-pharmacological interventions, namely, acupuncture therapy (40%), exercise intervention (30%), music therapy (10%), cognitive intervention (10%), and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) (10%). All the included MAs were critically low to low quality by AMSTAR 2. Acupuncture therapy and exercise intervention showed the preliminary potential to improve ADL and MMSE. rTMS and acupuncture therapy show benefits in decreasing ADAS-cog, and there were some evidence of improved MMSE with cognitive intervention. All these outcomes scored very low quality to moderate quality of evidence on the GRADE system. Conclusions: Non-pharmacological therapy shows promise for the treatment of AD, but there is still a lack of high-quality evidence. In the future, the quality of the original research needs to be improved, and strictly designed MAs should be carried out following methodological requirements.

BACKGROUND: Stroke scales of traditional Chinese medicine (SSTCM) are promoted for use in the early prognosis. The current lines of evidence to support their performance evaluation are uneven. This pilot study aimed to investigate the correlation between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptoms in the early stages of acute ischemic stroke and the prognosis of motor dysfunction through one-year of follow-up. METHODS: Three hundred and fifteen patients were retrospected at Longhua Hospital from January 2016 to December 2017. All patients had received standard treatments combined with acupuncture therapy, including both electroacupuncture and scalp acupuncture for a median course of five months. The observed outcomes were the Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), the modified Barthel index (MBI), and the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at one-year follow-up after stroke onset by multiple linear regression analysis combined with ROC curves. RESULTS: The favorable outcome rate was 74.3%, with the recurrence rate of 20.3% in the follow-up. In multiple linear regression, 10 TCM symptoms (MBI regression model) were related to the prognosis of MBI (DW 1.409, Ad. R 2 0.654) and 10 TCM symptoms (FMA regression model) were related to the FMA outcome (DW 1.446, Ad R 2 0.620). The two models were selected to have nine repeated symptoms (repeated model). In the ROC curves, the three models were compared with the NIHSS score, and the MBI regression model reflected the highest efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of 10 TCM symptoms, once onset occurred, including hemiplegia, restlessness, hemianesthesia, short breath, headache, constipation, night sweat, tinnitus, thirsty, and gurgling with sputum, may affect the recovery of motor dysfunction. Furthermore, the improvements of TCM symptoms dynamically after treatment would be observed in a large prospective cohort. This trial is registered with NCT01806233.

Objective To observe effects of different dosages of moxibustion with ginger-separated moxibustion on expressions of mitogen extracellular kinase (MEK) 1/2 and extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK) 1/2 of gastric tissue in rats with spleen deficiency; To explore the possible mechanism and the dose-effect relationship. Methods Seventy-five SD rats were randomly divided into blank control group, model group, ginger-separated moxibustion for three zhuang group, six zhuang group and nine zhuang group according to random digits table method, with fifteen rats in each group. The rat model of spleen deficiency was established by intragastric administration with 200% Rhei Radix et Rhizoma infusion at 4 ℃. Ginger-separated moxibustion groups were treated with different dosage of moxibustion at "Zusanli", "Zhongwan" for eight days after the modeling. Pathological changes of gastric tissue by HE staining were observed under light microscope, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 protein in gastric tissue of rats. Results Compared with the blank control group rats, the gastric mucosa injury in the model group was obvious, which showed that the damage and abscission was more serious; compared with the model group, the gastric mucosa of rats was partly exfoliated and the damage was improved in three zhuang group, and the surface of gastric mucosa of rats was more complete and damage was improved obviously in six zhuang group and nine zhuang group; compared with the blank control group, the expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 protein in gastric tissue increased obviously in other groups (P<0.01);compared with three zhuang group, the expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 protein in gastric tissue increased in six zhuang group and nine zhuang group (P<0.01), but the effects of the two group were similar, without statistical significance (P>0.05). Conclusion Ginger-separated moxibustion can repair gastric mucosa in rats with spleen deficiency, which may be closely associated with its effect in increasing the expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 protein in gastric tissue and activating the MEK/ERK signal transduction pathway.

Objective: To observe the effects of different doses of ginger-partitioned moxibustion on serum trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) and mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) levels, as well as the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in gastric mucosa of rats with spleen deficiency syndrome, therefore, to explore the possible mechanism and the dose-effect characteristics of ginger-partitioned moxibustion in spleen deficiency syndrome. Methods: Seventy-five SPF grade Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a blank control group (group A), a model group (group B), a 3 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion group (group C1), a 6 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion group (group C2) and a 9 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion group (group C3) using random number table method, 15 rats in each group. Except group A, rats in the other groups received intragastric administration of 4 ℃200% concentrated Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) to prepare spleen deficiency syndrome model. After successful modeling, rats in group B received no treatment; rats in group C1, C2 and C3 were treated with 3, 6 and 9 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion at Zusanli (ST 36) and Zhongwan (CV 12) respectively for 8 continuous days. The general symptom score of rats was observed. The serum levels of TFF1 and MUC5AC were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of EGFR protein in gastric mucosa was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: After the treatment, compared with group A, the spleen deficiency symptom score was increased in group B, the levels of serum TFF1 and MUC5AC, the EGFR protein expression in gastric tissues of group C1, C2 and C3 were significantly increased (all P<0.01); compared with group B, the spleen deficiency scores were decreased in group C1, C2 and C3, and the serum levels of TFF1 and MUC5AC, as well as EGFR protein expression in gastric tissues were increased (all P<0.01). Compared with group C1, the spleen deficiency scores were decreased in group C2 and C3, the serum levels of TFF1 and MUC5AC, and the expression of EGFR protein in gastric tissues were increased (all P<0.01), however, there was no significant difference between group C2 and C3 (all P>0.05). The mechanism may be related to the increase of serum TFF1 and MUC5AC levels and activation of EGFR protein. Conclusion: Ginger-partitioned moxibustion can improve the symptoms, as well as promote the proliferation and repair of gastric mucosa in rats with spleen deficiency. The therapeutic efficacy of 6 or 9 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion is better than that of 3 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion, while the efficacies are equivalent between 6 and 9 moxa-cone ginger-partitioned moxibustion groups.

Objective:To observe the effect of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion on the expressions of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK1/2) and extracellular regulatory protein kinase (ERK1/2) in gastric tissues of rats with spleen deficiency syndrome, and to explore the possible mechanisms of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion in treating spleen deficiency syndrome. Methods:Sixty Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a blank control group (group A), a model group (group B), a ranitidine group (group C), and a herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group (group D) by random digit, 15 rats in each group. Rat models of spleen deficiency syndrome were made by intragastric administration of 4℃ 200% concentrated Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei). After successful modeling, the rats in group C were treated with 25 mg/(kg·bw) ranitidine by intragastric adminstration and rats in group D were treated with herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion at Zusanli (ST 36) and Zhongwan (CV 12), for 8 d. Excepted for rats in group A, all the other rats were treated with indomethacin at 5 mg/(kg·bw) at 8:00 a.m. on the second day after finishing all the intervention and sacrificed 7 h later to isolate the stomach. Histopathological changes of the gastric tissues were observed under light microscope after hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The protein expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 in the gastric tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. Results:After intervention, the gastric mucosal injury in group B was significantly severer than that in group A, with large breakage and ablating; the damage of gastric mucosa was decreased in group C compared with group B; the gastric mucosal surface remained relatively complete, and the status of breakage and ablating was significantly improved. After intervention, compared with group A, the protein expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 in gastric tissues of the other groups were significantly higher (P<0.01). Compared with group B, the protein expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 in group C and D were significantly higher (allP<0.01). Compared with group C, the protein expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 in group D were significantly higher (P<0.01). Conclusion: Herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion promotes the repair of gastric mucosa in rats with spleen deficiency syndrome, via improving protein expressions of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 in gastric tissues, as well as activating MEK/ERK signaling pathway.

Objective:To observe the effect of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion on the expressions of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK1/2) and extracellular regulatory protein kinase (ERK1/2) in gastric tissues of rats with spleen deficiency syndrome, and to explore the possible mechanisms of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion in treating spleen deficiency syndrome. Methods:Sixty Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into a blank control group (group A), a model group (group B), a ranitidine group (group C), and a herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion group (group D) by random digit, 15 rats in each group. Rat models of spleen deficiency syndrome were made by intragastric administration of 4℃ 200% concentrated Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei). Objective To explore clinical efficacy and mechanisms of medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion treatment for mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) of spleen deficiency and dampness type.Methods Totally 60 cases were randomly divided into observation group and control group according to a random digits table, with 30 cases in each group. The control group was inserted into the anus with mesalamine suppository 1 g once a day, while the observation group was given medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion treatment once a day based on the treatment for the control group. Medicinal cake (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata: Codonopsis Radix: Coptidix Rhizoma: Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma: Corydalis Rhizoma: Aucklandiae Radix=3:3:2:2:2:1) was put on the acupoints (Pishu, Zhongwan and Zusanli for the first group, Dachangshu, Tianshu and Shangjuxu for the second group, one group for each time, and 2 groups were used interchangeably). One wormwood cylinder was put on medicinal cake, 5 min each time, 3 doses each time, once a day. The treatment course for all was 8 weeks. The main symptom scores (diarrhea, bellyache, pus and blood stool) and total scores, colonoscopy Baron score and serum CC chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20) expression level were compared between before and after treatment in the two groups. The clinical efficacy was evaluated and the adverse reactions were observed.Results The total effective rate in observation group was 93.33% (28/30) and significantly higher than that of the control group of 76.67% (23/30). After the treatment, the main symptom scores and total scores, colonoscopy Baron score and serum CCL20 expression level were significantly lower than those of pre-treatment in the same one group (P0.05).Conclusion Medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion treatment is effective and safe in patients with mild-to-moderate UC of spleen deficiency and dampness type, which effects might be involved in regulating the expression of serum CCL20.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the clinical efficacy and partial mechanism of medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion for senile osteoporosis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Sixty cases of senile osteoporosis were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group according to the random digits table, 30 cases in each one. The two groups were both treated with basic treatment of western medicine. The acupoints included four groups:① Dazhui (GV 14), Dazhu (BL 11) and Ganshu (BL 18); ② Zhongwan (CV 12), Danzhong (CV 17) and Zusanli (ST 36); ③ Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23) and Mingmen (GV 4); ④ Shenque (CV 8) and Guanyuan (CV 4). Each group of acupoints was selected for one treatment. The observation group was treated with medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion, and the medicinal cake was consisted of fructus psoraleae (30 g), prepared rehmannia root (30 g), atractylodes (30 g), codonopsis pilosula (30 g), epimedium herb (20 g), rhizoma curculiginis (20 g), syzygium aromaticum (5 g) and cinnamon (5 g). The control group was treated with wheat-flour-cake moxibustion. Each acupoint was treated with 5 moxa cones in the two groups. The treatment was given once every other day for six months. The symptom score, lumbar and hip bone mineral density (BMD), serum type Ⅰ procollagen amino-terminal propeptide (PINP) and serum β-type Ⅰ collagen carboxy-terminal peptide (β-CTX) were observed before and after treatment.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After treatment, the symptom score and serum β-CTX were significantly lowered (all<0.05), while the lumbar and hip BMD and serum PINP were significantly increased (all<0.05) of the two groups. After treatment, the symptom score and serum β-CTX in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (both<0.05), while the lumbar and hip BMD and serum PINP in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (all<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The medicinal-cake-separated moxibustion has significant efficacy for senile osteoporosis, which is superior to wheat-cake-se-parated moxibustion.</p>

Acanthopanax senticosus (previously classified as Eleutherococcus senticosus), commonly known as Ciwujia or Siberian Ginseng, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), widely used for its high medicinal value, such as antifatigue, anti-inflammation, antistress, anti-ulcer and cardiovascular functions, in China, Korea, Japan and Russia. In the past decades, researchers worldwide have conducted systematic investigations on this herb, from chemistry to pharmacology, and a large number of chemical components have been characterized for their significant pharmacological effects. However, reports about the anticancer effects of this plant had been rare until recently, when considerable pharmacological experiments both in vitro and in vivo were conducted to study the anticancer effects of this herb. A. senticosus has been found to have inhibitory effects on malignant tumors, such as those in the lung and liver, suggesting that A. senticosus has potential to be developed as an effective anticancer drug. This paper reviews recent findings on the pharmacological properties of A. senticosus, with a focus on its anticancer effects.

Rhizoma alismatis (the rhizome of Alisma orientalis) polysaccharides (RAP) have been reported to have a variety of important biological activities. However, effective extraction of RAP has been an unsolved issue. In this study, we used an ultrasound method for high yield extraction of RAP and optimized the conditions using the response surface methodology (RSM). Following multiple regression analyses of the experimental results, we applied the 3-D response surface and the contour plots to determine the optimal conditions, which were found to be ultrasound treatment at 76.1°C for 75.2 min, and water to material ratio at 30.1 ml/g. Under such conditions, the yield was 6.90% which was much higher than traditional hot water extraction yield (3.41%). The fractionated RAPs following stepwise ethanol precipitation showed strong antioxidant activities. The results indicated that ultrasound extraction was a very effective method for the extraction of RAP and the polysaccharides could be explored as a potential antioxidant agent for use in medicine or functional food.

OBJECTIVE: To observe efficacy and side effects, as well as the impact on quality of life, of Kanglaite® (Coix Seed Oil) injections combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer patiensts. METHOD: A consecutive cohort of 60 patients were divided into two groups:the experimental group receiving Kanglaite® Injection combined with chemotherapy and the control group with chemotherapy alone. After more than two courses of treatment, efficacy, quality of life and side effects were evaluated. RESULTS: The response rate and KPS score of experimental group were significantly improved as compared with those of the control group(P<0.05). In addition, gastrointestinal reactions and bone marrow suppression were significantly lower than in the control group(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Kanglaite® Injection enhanced efficacy and reduced the side effects of chemotherapy, improving quality of life of gastric cancer patients; use of Kanglaite® injections deserves to be further investigated in randomized control clinical trails.

OBJECTIVE: To screen the main component of Dahuangzhechong pill's anti-arterial thrombosis with the orthogonal design and refine Dahuangzhechong pills. METHODS: In accordance with the orthogonal design table (L(16)2(15)), divided herbs into 16 groups and made the appropriate liquid. The liquid was gave to SD rats by intragastric administration,the model group, normal control group received the same volume of physiological saline. Isolated rats' carotid artery after intragastric administration a week,modeled according to ferric chloride inducement the carotid artery thrombosis method, then collected blood, detected content of platelet, thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1alpha (6-keto-PGF1alpha), sheared and measured dry weight of the modeling artery, then placed arteries in 10% formalin fixation, observed morphological changes in vascular tissue by HE staining. RESULTS: Pathological examination revealed: each experimental group had thrombosis, softening, dissolution, absorption, and intimal injury, but the severity of thrombosis were diferent. Orthogonal analysis showed: 1, influence on dry weight of thrombus: rhubarb, ground beetle, leeches, peach seed, dry paint, except dry paint P<0.05, the others P<0.01.2, influence on plasma 6- keto-PGF1alpha level: peach seed, dry paint, ground beetle, gadfly, grubs, leeches, rhubarb, except rhubarb P<0.05, the others P<0.01.3, influence on plasma TXB2: ground beetle, peach seed, dried paint, rhubarb, leeches, except leech P<0.05, the others P<0.01.4, influence on platelet count: peach seed, dry paint, rhubarb, ground beetle, gadfly, leeches, except gadfly, leeches P<0.05, the others P<0.01. CONCLUSION: Anti-artery thrombosis of Dahuangzhechong Pill is most closely related with rhubarb, ground beetle, leeches, peach seed, dry paint and gadfly.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of Shenfu injection (SF) on the expression of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced microRNA-146a (miR-146a) in rat alveolar macrophages (AMs), and to extrapolate its potential anti-inflammatory mechanisms. METHODS: In vitro cultured rat AMs (NR8383 cells) were randomly divided into control group, LPS stimulation group, and SF stimulation group. The LPS stimulation group was challenged with a final concentration of 1 mg/L LPS, and to the control group an equal volume of phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was added instead. For SF treated group, SF in different concentrations (1 ml/L or 10 ml/L) was used during incubation of AMs for half an hour, and then LPS was added (1 mg/L final concentration). After 6 hours, the cells and were collected. MiRNA-146a expression [reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)] in cells and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α ) content [enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)] in culture supernatant were determined for each group. RESULTS: Both the expression of miR-146a and TNF-α content in LPS stimulation group were significantly elevated compared with control group [miR-146a (expression folds): 5.92 + 1.57 vs. 1.04 +0.38; TNF-α (ng/L): 636.93 _ 30.21 vs. 20.46 + 2.81; both P<0.05]. Compared with LPS stimulation group, the expression of miR-146a was significantly upregulated in cells in both 1 ml/L and 10 ml/L SF stimulation groups, but TNF- α content was significantly reduced in the supernatant [miR-146a (expression folds): 7.02 + 0.91, 8.11 ± 1.07 vs. 5.92 -1.57; TNF-α (ng/L): 447.24 +21.29, 357.83 +19.73 vs. 636.93 +30.21, all P<0.05] in a dose-dependent manner (both P<0.05). CONCLUSION: SF could up-regulate miR-146a expression in AMs in a dose-dependent manner, and it was speculated that miR-146a might be involved in the anti-inflammatory processes with SF treatment.
