Objectives: Mental health problems among university students are a cause of widespread concern. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) delivered online have considerable potential to help university students manage mental health challenges. However, there is no consensus regarding the efficacy of online MBIs. This meta-analysis aims to determine whether MBIs are feasible and effective for improving university students' mental health. Methods: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and the US National Library of Medicine (Clinical Trial Registry) published through August 31, 2022, were searched. Two reviewers selected the trials, conducted a critical appraisal, and extracted the data. Nine RCTs met our inclusion criteria. Results: This analysis showed that online MBIs were effective in improving depression (standardised mean difference [SMD] = -0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.48 to -0.07; P = 0.008), anxiety (SMD = -0.47; 95% CI, -080 to -0.14; P = 0.006), stress (SMD = -0.58; 95% CI, -0.79 to -0.37; P < 0.00001), and mindfulness (SMD = 0.71; 95% CI, 0.17 to 1.25; p = 0.009) in university students. No significant effect was found on wellbeing (SMD = 0.30; 95% CI, -0.00 to 0.60; P = 0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicated that online MBIs could effectively improve the mental health of university students. Nevertheless, additional rigorously designed RCTs are required. Collembola are among the most abundant and integral group in soil decomposers. They channel C and nutrients from basic food resources to higher trophic levels, and therefore play an irreplaceable role in the underground food web. Collembola community would be altered dramatically by increasing N and P deposition. However, we still know little about how Collembola respond to N and P inputs, which will largely retard our steps to understand the ecological functions of collembolans, material circulation and energy flow of the underground food web, and even C cycling in terrestrial ecosystem. The different classification rules for Collembola functional groups have led to poor comparability of research results in the literature. This review proposed three taxonomic criteria of Collembola and four common research means on trophic relationships, summarized the mechanisms underlying the responses of Collembola to N and P addition alone and coadded. Overall, Collembola generally shows a negative response to N addition namely community density decreases, while a positive response to P addition in most ecosystems. The situation was more complicated under the combined N and P application. In the future, the research of Collembola response to N and P deposition should focus on the scientific taxa of Collembola functional groups, improving the research methods of trophic structure of Collembola, and the mechanism underlying the impacts of N and P interaction on Collembola community.

OBJECTIVE: LINC00205, a bidirectional lncRNA, located at human chromosome 21q22.3, was recently characterized as an oncogenic molecule contributing to cell proliferation in several cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present study, we aim to probe the new molecular mechanism for LINC00205 controlling the proliferation of HCC cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The expression status of LINC00205, miR-26a-5p, as well as CDK6 in HCC tissues/cell lines was determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The cell proliferative activity was measured by using the Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8 assay. Flow cytometry was performed to analyze cell cycle progression and apoptosis induction. The interaction among LINC00205, miR-26a-5p and CDK6, as well as transcription efficiency of LINC00205 promoter were examined by Dual-Luciferase reporter assay. Western blot was conducted to evaluate the protein levels of CDK6 in SNU-449 cells. The direct interplay between YY1 and LINC00205 promoter was detected by ChIP-qPCR. RESULTS: LINC00205 was strongly expressed in HCC tissues and cell lines. Elevated LINC00205 expression was positively associated with worse prognosis as well as pathological grade in HCC. Suppression of LINC00205 could impede the proliferation of HCC cells by triggering the G0/G1-phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro. Mechanistically, we illustrated that LINC00205 could accelerate the proliferation of HCC cells by boosting CDK6 expression via sponging miR-26a-5p. Moreover, we unveiled that LINC00205 could be activated by transcription factor Yin Yang-1 (YY1) as its direct downstream target. CONCLUSIONS: LINC00205, a novel YY1-modulated lncRNA, can facilitate the proliferation of HCC cells through YY1/miR-26a-5p/CDK6 pathway, and may serve as a promising diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC.

In this paper, the theory of " Fear injury kidney " in traditional Chinese medicine is systematically reviewed, and it is found that long-term or excessive psychological changes of fear are likely to damage kidney qi and kidney essence. On this basis, the psychological studies of patients, medical staff and the public during the COVID-19 epidemic in China were analyzed, and fear psychology was found to be prevalent among all kinds of people. Modern researches on "Fear injury kidney" have also found that long-term or excessive fear could cause changes in the neuro-endocrine-immune system, which can induce diseases or susceptibility to some diseases. Therefore, during or after the prevalence of COVID-19, different groups of people may have emotional reactions such as stress and fear, which should be paid long-term attention, and the influence of fear on the body cannot be ignored. According to the change rule of psychological state under stress reaction, we should actively respond to and take psychological crisis intervention measures in time to reduce the harm of psychological stress to the body.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a class of templates with application potential for drug development. Amphibians are important sources of AMPs. Duttaphrynus melanostictus is the main source of traditional Chinese medicine "Chansu", which has anti-infection effect while without a clear mechanism. This study aimed to find the cathelicidin peptide in D. melanostictus and then investigate the activity in vivo and in vitro, and an AMP-encoding gene (cathelicidin-DM, GenBank: KJ820824.1) was obtained from the constructed cDNA library of D. melanostictus. The MIC test and SYTOX Green uptake were used for the evaluation of the bactericidal capacity and mechanisms. The serum stability tests were used for the evaluation of the application potential. The skin wound infection model and in vivo imaging were used for in vitro application of possibility evaluation. The results showed that cathelicidin-DM was a 37 amino acid AMP with good bactericidal ability, which was similar to melittin: both can kill bacteria within 15 min. Moreover, cathelicidin-DM exhibits good therapeutic potential in the mouse wound infection model, and it can be enriched to the site of infection for treatment. Thus, cathelicidin-DM could be a new template for antimicrobial drug development given its good antibacterial activity in vivo and in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Increasing antibiotic resistance has motivated interest in non-antibiotic prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI). OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review of the current state of evidence of acupuncture for uncomplicated rUTI in women. SEARCH STRATEGY: Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, AMED, CBM, CNKI, CQVIP, Wanfang) were searched from inception to February 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of acupuncture and related therapies for prophylaxis or treatment of uncomplicated rUTI in women were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Risk of bias was assessed, and the quality and strength of evidence evaluated using the GRADE framework. Results were reported as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean differences (MD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: Five RCTs involving 341 participants were included. Methodological quality of studies and strength of the evidence were low to moderate. The chance of achieving a composite cure with acupuncture therapies was greater than that with antibiotics (three studies, 170 participants, RR 1.92, 95% CI 1.31-2.81, I2  = 38%). The risk of UTI recurrence was lower with acupuncture than with no treatment (two studies, 135 participants, RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.26-0.58, I2  = 0%) and sham acupuncture (one study, 53 participants, RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.22-0.92). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture appeared to be beneficial for treatment and prophylaxis of rUTIs, noting the limitations of the current evidence. Given the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance, there is a need for high-quality RCTs of non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: This review found that acupuncture may improve treatment and prevent recurrence of urinary tract infection in women.

Objective: To explore clinical application value of prognostic nutrition index(PNI) and apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) in treating hepatic arterial chemoembolization (TACE) of patients with hepatic cell carcinoma (HCC). Methods: A total of 77 patients with HHC of BCLC B were retrospectively analyzed in Dalian Medical University Affiliated Second Hospital who were diagnosed for the first time and received TACE treatment from October 2017 to December 2018, of whom 64 Males, 13 females, mean age was 54±13 years.At 1 month after surgery, TACE efficacy was evaluated according to revised solid tumor evaluation criteria (mRECIST), the enrolled patients were divided into TACE effective group (41 cases, 53.2%) and TACE ineffective group (36 cases, 46.8%) to compare ability of PNI and ability of ADC alone or in combination in evaluating efficacy of TACE and the relationship between these two groups. Results: Overall postoperative PNI of enrolled patients was decreased compared with preoperative PNI, 47.7±6.6 vs 48.3±5.9 (P<0.05), preoperative and postoperative PNI of TACE effective group were all higher than that of TACE ineffective group (49.9±6.0 vs 46.6±5.3, 50.6±5.4 vs 44.4±5.1,all P<0.05), there was no significant difference in PNI between the treatment groups (P>0.05). The value of ADC in postoperative tumor region increased compared with that in preoperative tumor region ((1.43±0.15) ×10(-3) vs (1.28±0.08) ×10(-3) mm(2)/s, P<0.05), the difference between postoperative tumor region ADC value and postoperative normal liver parenchyma had no statistical significance(P>0.05). Overall postoperative PNI and tumor region ADC value of enrolled patients had linear correlation (P<0.05).Threshold value of PNI and ADC value in preoperative prediction were 51.05 and 1.32×10(-3) mm(2)/s; postoperative evaluation threshold value were 50.11 and 1.41×10(-3) mm(2)/s.Postoperative combination of PNI and ADC had the highest value in evaluating TACE efficacy. Conclusions: TACE postoperative PNI and tumor region ADC are related. PNI and tumor region ADC could be used in predicting and evaluating TACE efficacy in HCC patients, combination of these two could further increase the efficiency.

Fat-soluble vitamins (FSVs), A, D, and E, are components of prenatal vitamin care. Previously, limited evidence existed to explain on a molecular level how maternal FSV supplementation affects the fetus during pregnancy. We developed a simplified LC-MS/MS method to simultaneously detect FSVs in maternal plasma (MP) and amniotic fluid (AF); we used this approach to investigate the correlation between FSV levels in these two matrices. With this method, we circumvented frequently used liquid-liquid extraction or solid-phase extraction methods and, instead, used simple protein precipitation with acetonitrile for sample preparation. This method displayed satisfactory linearity, intra- and inter-day imprecision, and accuracy. We validated the consistency with standard reference material 972a and 968f certification. In analysis of MP and AF samples from 50 pregnant women in the second trimester, concentrations of retinol, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3], and α-tocopherol (reflecting vitamins A, D, and E, respectively) were lower in AF than in MP. Significant positive correlations existed between MP and AF for 25(OH)D3 (r = 0.667; P < 0.001) and retinol (r = 0.393; P = 0.005), but not for α-tocopherol (r = 0.145, P > 0.05). This novel LC-MS/MS method shows prominent applicability for FSV detection and the observed correlations contribute to research on fetal development.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between adiponectin (APN) pathway and Wnt pathway was explored through BMSCs, and the effect of low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) on bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and its mechanism were further studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 3-week-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were selected, and mesenchymal stem cells were separately cultured and purified. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to analyze cell proliferation. After osteogenic and adipogenic induction, cultures were conducted, respectively, cells were stained with alizarin red and oil red O. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect the expressions of osteogenesis-related genes, runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and osteocalcin (OC) and those of adipogenesis-related genes, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (c/EBPα). Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of ß-catenin in the cytoplasm and nucleus. The lentiviral expression vector of adiponectin receptors (APN-R) was constructed, and the expression of APN receptor genes was silenced. The expressions of ß-catenin in APN receptors and the nucleus within cells were detected. RESULTS: LLLI promoted the bone formation by inducing the differentiation direction of mesenchymal stem cells, increasing the number of osteoblasts in the bone marrow and inhibiting the reduction of the number of adipocytes. LLLI regulates the Wnt pathway, promotes the entry of ß-catenin into the nucleus, activates the osteogenic effect of the Wnt pathway so as to promote the bone formation of osteoblasts and inhibit bone resorption of osteoclasts. LLLI promotes the entry of ß-catenin into the nucleus and the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs through the APN pathway. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, LLLI can promote osteogenesis and inhibit adipocytes formation, thus attenuating bone resorption of osteoclasts. The mechanism of LLLI is that it promotes the entry of ß-catenin into the nucleus and regulates the Wnt pathway and the differentiation direction of mesenchymal stem cells through the APN signal pathway, thus promoting bone formation.

The study was established an HPLC method for simultaneous determination of 8 steroidal saponins (polyphyllins Ⅶ, H, Ⅵ, Ⅱ, Ⅰ, and Ⅴ, dioscin, and gracillin) in Paridis Rhizoma, and made an evaluation by determining steroidal saponins in 15 kinds of genus Paris. The analysis was performed on a Waters Acquity H-ClassTM UPLC ultrafine liquid chromatography system coupled with a PDA detector. The chromatographic separation was achieved through a CAPCELL PAK ADME (4.6 mm× 250 mm, 5 µm) column and the optimal mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and water. The column was maintained at 21 ℃, and the flow rate was 0.8 mL•min ⁻¹. The UV detection wavelength was 203 nm. The results showed that ① the detected components can be well separated and all with good correlation coefficients. The standard calibration curves were linearly good (R2>0.999 9). The linearity was obtained over 0.041 70-3.812 00 µg. The average recoveries ranged from 95.91% to 103.8%. ② there are significant differences in the content of steroidal saponins from different species. The steroidal saponins are low content or almost none in P. mairei, P. polyphylla var. stenophylla, and P. delavayi have low content or almost did not contain, so these species are not suitable for medicinal use. The contents of steroidal saponins in P. polyphylla var. chinensis are varied from different places. There were high content of steroidal saponins in P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis, P. forrestii, P. daliensis, and P. axialis, even up to 5.0%, which indicated that they had the potential pharmic value of development.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of amylose (AM):amylopectin (AP) ratio, extrusion, storage duration, and enzyme supplementation on starch digestibility of corn. Three corn varieties with high (0.60; HA), medium (0.44; MA), and low (0.39; LA) AM:AP ratios, respectively, were selected from 74 corn samples to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo digestibility of starch. In Exp. 1, during wk 4 after extrusion, resistant starch (RS) content of the 3 selected corn varieties (LA, MA, and HA) increased (P < 0.05) each week and starch digestibility in vitro decreased as storage time increased (P < 0.05). The AM:AP ratio affected the formation of RS (P < 0.01). The RS content of the 3 corn varieties was ranked as LA < MA < HA in each week (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that AM:AP ratio and storage duration were both positively correlated with RS content (P < 0.01). Furthermore, a significant quadratic relation was found between storage duration and RS content in each corn variety as well as storage duration and digestibility. Starch digestibility was negatively correlated with RS content (P < 0.001). In Exp. 2, digestion trials were performed on cannulated pigs with BW of 13.20 ± 0.94 kg. Extrusion increased ileal digestibility of GE and starch of either HA or LA compared with the enzyme-supplemented diets (P < 0.001). Enzyme supplementation did not improve ileal energy and starch digestibility. The ileal digestibility of starch and GE of LA varieties was greater than HA samples (P < 0.05). The results implied that AM:AP ratio and storage duration after extrusion may be important determinants of RS formation and digestibility of starch for corn. In addition, RS content could be an important indicator of digestibility of starch in extruded corn. Using a lower AM:AP ratio corn or reducing the storage duration of extruded corn would help to reduce the formation of RS and improve the starch bioavailability of corn for piglets.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has a high negative impact on quality of life. Acupuncture has antipruritic actions and may assist in treatment of AD; however, the current state of evidence for this remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture against placebo/sham acupuncture in the management of AD. Electronic searches were conducted on a number of databases, from their inception until November 2013. Studies comparing the effects of acupuncture with those of placebo/sham acupuncture on severity of disease or symptoms/signs of AD were included. We did not find any studies that were eligible to be included in this systematic review. Among the excluded studies, there were two studies that evaluated the antipruritic effects of acupuncture and one study that evaluated the effects of acupuncture on IgE-mediated allergy. However, there were no randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of acupuncture on AD as a disease. This finding therefore provides an indication of the current state of evidence of acupuncture in the management of AD, and highlights the research gap that exists, in that there is a lack of gold-standard studies (i.e. RCTs) to support valid conclusions. There is currently no evidence of the effects of acupuncture in the management of AD, and no evidence-based recommendations or conclusions can be made from this review. Several studies indicated that acupuncture may have a role in reducing itch or regulating IgE-mediated allergy, both of which are major characteristics of AD. However, there were no RCTs evaluating the effects of acupuncture on AD as a disease. There is therefore an urgent need for rigorously designed RCTs to assess the efficacy of acupuncture in the management of AD.

OBJECTIVE: Intrauterine glucocorticoid (GC) exposure is associated with disturbances in feto-placental growth. This study aimed to investigate whether folic acid supplementation can prevent dexamethasone (Dex)-induced feto-placental growth restriction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female C57BL/6J mice were subject to four different treatments, respectively: normal drinking water plus saline injection (NN), normal drinking water plus Dex injection (ND), drinking water supplemented with folic acid plus saline injection (FN), and drinking water supplemented with folic acid plus Dex injection (FD). Folic acid (100 µg/L) was administrated since 2 weeks before the mating and throughout pregnancy. Dex injection (100 µg/kg•d) was performed from E12.5 to E16.5. The placentas were collected at E17.5. RESULTS: The parameters including placental and fetal weight, the maximum placental diameter, volume of junctional and labyrinthine zones, and vascular density in the ND group were significantly smaller compared to the NN group. Except the maximum placental diameter, each of the above parameters in the FD group was significantly larger compared to the ND group. The levels of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) protein, and endothelial growth factor A, C (VEGFA, VEGFC) and placental growth factor (PIGF) mRNAs were significantly lower in the ND group compared to NN group. The VEGFA and PIGF mRNA level in the FD group was significantly higher than that in the ND group, as well as VEGFA and VEGFC protein level. CONCLUSIONS: Folic acid may attenuate Dex-induced restriction on placental growth by elevating the expression of VEGFA and PIGF, and further raising vascular density.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health burden and will become the third largest cause of death in the world by 2030. It is currently believed that an exaggerated inflammatory response to inhaled irritants, in particular cigarette smoke, cause progressive airflow limitation. This inflammation, where macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes are prominent, leads to oxidative stress, emphysema, airways fibrosis and mucus hypersecretion. COPD responds poorly to current anti-inflammatory treatments including corticosteroids, which produce little or no benefit. Panax ginseng has a long history of use in Chinese medicine for respiratory conditions, including asthma and COPD. OBJECTIVES: In this perspective we consider the therapeutic potential of Panax ginseng for the treatment of COPD. RESULTS: Panax ginseng and its compounds, ginsenosides, have reported effects through multiple mechanisms but primarily have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. Ginsenosides are functional ligands of glucocorticoid receptors and appear to inhibit kinase phosphorylation including MAPK and ERK1/2, NF-κB transcription factor induction/translocation, and DNA binding. They also inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, ROS, and proteases such as MMP-9. Panax ginseng protects against oxidative stress by increasing anti-oxidative enzymes and reducing the production of oxidants. CONCLUSION: Given that Panax ginseng and ginsenosides appear to inhibit processes related to COPD pathogenesis, they represent an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of COPD.

Patients with psoriasis frequently use preparations of plant extracts. Physicians need to be aware of the current evidence concerning these products. This review evaluates the efficacy and safety of preparations of plant extracts used topically for psoriasis. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane library, two Chinese databases and article reference lists. Randomized controlled trials investigating extracts of single plants were included. Preparations of multiple plants and combinations of plant extracts plus conventional therapies were excluded. Two authors conducted searches, extracted data and assessed risk of bias. Outcomes used in meta-analyses were: clinical efficacy, Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score, and quality of life and symptom scores. The 12 included studies investigated extracts of: Mahonia aquifolium (n = 5), Aloe vera (n = 3), indigo naturalis (n = 2), kukui nut oil (n = 1) and Camptotheca acuminata nut (n = 1). Methodological quality was variable. Six studies provided data suitable for meta-analysis of clinical efficacy, and five were vs. placebo (relative risk 3·37, 95% confidence interval 1·36-8·33). Experimental studies indicate components of indigo naturalis, Mahonia and Camptotheca have anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and other actions of relevance to psoriasis. The clinical trial evidence provides limited support for preparations containing extracts of M. aquifolium, indigo naturalis and Aloe vera for the topical management of plaque psoriasis based on multiple studies. No serious adverse events were reported. Because of the small size of most studies and methodological weaknesses, strong conclusions cannot be made. The magnitudes of any effects cannot be measured with accuracy, so it is difficult to assess the clinical relevance of these preparations.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) on hemichannel pannexin-1 (PX1) in cortical neurons and neural plasticity, and explore the optimal time window of TDCS therapy after stroke. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=90) were randomly assigned to sham operation, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and TDCS groups, and underwent sham operation, unilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) electrocoagulation, and unilateral MCA electrocoagulation plus TDCS (daily anodal and cathodal 10 Hz, 0.1 mA TDCS for 30 min beginning day 1 after stroke), respectively. Motor function was assessed using the beam walking test (BWT), and density of dendritic spines (DS) and PX1 mRNA expression were compared among groups on days 3, 7, and 14 after stroke. Effects of PX1 blockage on DS in hippocampal neurons after hypoxia-ischemia were observed. TDCS significantly improved motor function on days 7 and 14 after stroke as indicated by reduced BWT scores compared with the MCAO group. The density of DS was decreased after stroke; the TDCS group had increased DS density compared with the MCAO group on days 3, 7, and 14 (all P<0.0001). Cerebral infarction induced increased PX1 mRNA expression on days 3, 7, and 14 (P<0.0001), and the peak PX1 mRNA expression was observed on day 7. TDCS did not decrease the up-regulated PX1 mRNA expression after stroke on day 3, but did reduce the increased post-stroke PX1 mRNA expression on days 7 and 14 (P<0.0001). TDCS increased the DS density after stroke, indicating that it may promote neural plasticity after stroke. TDCS intervention from day 7 to day 14 after stroke demonstrated motor function improvement and can down-regulate the elevated PX1 mRNA expression after stroke.

The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), is one of the most serious pests to livestock. It feeds mainly on cattle and causes significant economic losses in the cattle industry. Standard stable fly control involving insecticides and sanitation is usually costly and often has limited effectiveness. As we continue to evaluate and develop safer fly control strategies, the present study reports on the effectiveness of catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) oil and its constituent compounds, nepetalactones, as stable fly repellents. The essential oil of catnip reduced the feeding of stable flies by >96% in an in vitro bioassay system, compared with other sesquiterpene-rich plant oils (e.g. amyris and sandalwood). Catnip oil demonstrated strong repellency against stable flies relative to other chemicals for repelling biting insects, including isolongifolenone, 2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxamide and (1S,2'S)-2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexen-1-carboxamide. The repellency against stable flies of the most commonly used mosquito repellent, DEET, was relatively low. In field trials, two formulations of catnip oil provided >95% protection and were effective for up to 6 h when tested on cattle. Catnip oil also acted as a strong oviposition repellent and reduced gravid stable fly oviposition by 98%.

Observations at regular intervals of the location of newly hatched grape root borer, Vitacea polistiformis (Harris), larvae moving freely within circular petri dish bioassays were used to measure and compare their response to dry filter paper discs treated with ethanol- or hexane-based extracts of roots from known and potential Vitaceae hosts and a nonhost. Larvae responded most strongly to discs treated with ethanol extracts, suggesting the presence of behaviorally active, polar compounds associated with roots. In single extract bioassays comparing extract versus solvent treated discs, larvae responded positively to ethanol extracts from all Vitis species and rootstocks and Virginia creeper [Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch.], but not to apple (Malus domestica Borkh). Paired extract bioassays, in which an extract from the commercially important 3309 rootstock was used as the standard and presented simultaneously with extracts from other root sources, revealed examples of equal, significantly weaker and significantly stronger responses to the 3309 extract. Extracts of the 420 A and V. riparia 'Gloire' rootstocks appeared to possess qualities that elicited a consistently greater response than to 3309 extract in these pair-wise comparisons. The active compounds were eluted in ethanol during a 30-min extraction; larvae responded equally to 30- and 60-min 3309 root extracts in paired extract bioassays. Larvae responded equally to extracts of 3309 roots from three spatially separate vineyards in northern Virginia. These results are discussed in relation to the subterranean, plant-insect interactions of grape root borer neonates with the numerous native and non-native Vitis species that may serve as hosts in the eastern United States.

*White lupin (Lupinus albus) forms specialized cluster roots characterized by exudation of organic anions under phosphorus (P) deficiency. Here, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in P deficiency-induced cluster-root formation and citrate exudation was evaluated. *White lupin plants were treated with the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and scavenger or inhibitor of NO synthase under conditions of P deficiency (0 muM) or P sufficiency (50 muM). *Phosphorus deficiency enhanced NO production in primary and lateral root tips, with a greater increase in cluster roots than in noncluster roots. NO concentrations decreased with cluster root development from the pre-emergent stage, through the juvenile stage, to the mature stage. The P deficiency-induced increase in NO production was inhibited by antagonists of NO synthase and xanthine oxidoreductase, suggesting the involvement of these enzymes in NO production. SNP markedly increased the number of cluster roots. Citrate exudation from different root segments in P-deficient roots was positively correlated with endogenous root NO concentrations. *These findings demonstrate differential patterns of NO production in white lupin, depending on root zone, developmental stage and P nutritional status. NO appears to play a regulatory role in the formation of cluster roots and citrate exudation in white lupin under conditions of P deficiency.
